LOS ANGELES (AP) — What if alternative energy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be? That’s the provocative question explored in the documentary Planet of the Humans, which is backed and promoted by filmmaker Michael Moore and directed by one of his longtime collaborators. It premiered last week at his Traverse City Film Festival.
The film, which does not yet have distribution, is a low-budget but piercing examination of what the filmmakers say are the false promises of the environmental movement and why we’re still “addicted” to fossil fuels. Director Jeff Gibbs takes on electric cars, solar panels, windmills, biomass, biofuel, leading environmentalist groups like the Sierra Club, and even figures from Al Gore and Van Jones, who served as Barack Obama’s special adviser for green jobs, to 350.org leader Bill McKibben, a leading environmentalist and advocate for grassroots climate change movements.
Gibbs, who produced Moore’s Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11, didn’t set out to take on the environmental movement. He said he wanted to know why things weren’t getting better. But when he started pulling on the thread, he and Moore said they were shocked to find how inextricably entangled alternative energy is with coal and natural gas, since they say everything from wind turbines to electric car charging stations are tethered to the grid, and even how two of the Koch brothers — Charles and David — are tied to solar panel production through their glass production business.
“It turned out the wakeup call was about our own side,” Gibbs said in a phone interview. “It was kind of crushing to discover that the things I believed in weren’t real, first of all, and then to discover not only are the solar panels and wind turbines not going to save us … but (also) that there is this whole dark side of the corporate money … It dawned on me that these technologies were just another profit center.”
Both know the film is going to be a “tough pill to swallow.” It was a difficult eye-opener for them as well.
“We all want to feel good about something like the electric car, but in the back of your head somewhere you’ve thought, ’Yeah, but where is the electricity coming from? And it’s like, ‘I don’t want to think about that, I’m glad we have electric cars,’” Moore said. “I’ve passed by the windmill farms, and oh it’s so beautiful to see them going, and don’t tell me that we’ve gone too far now and it isn’t going to save us … Well, my feeling is just hit me with everything. I’m like let’s just deal with it now, all at once.”
It’s part of the reason why they had to make it independently. Gibbs said he tried for years to get an environmental group on board to help offset the costs, only to be turned down at every door. He was further disheartened when, in the film, he approaches people like Jones, McKibben and a local Sierra Club leader, and asks them about their stance on biofuel and biomass. Biomass, like wood and garbage, can be used to produce heat and is considered a renewable source of energy. It can also be converted to gas or liquid biofuels that can be burned for energy.
He finds every one ill-prepared to comment on their stance about the biomass process, which the documentary says requires cutting down enormous numbers of trees to produce the woodchips that are converted into energy. Neither Jones nor McKibben responded to request for comment from The Associated Press.
“I like so many people in the film and I’m one of those people who wanted to believe all of these years that that was the right path,” Moore said. ”(But) I refuse to let us die out. I refuse to let this planet die.”
They were even nervous to show it to the festival crowd, where they expected maybe a “50-50 response.” Instead, they got a standing ovation. And there were even members of The Sierra Club there.

I think electric cars are great.I wish I had one.But the lithium batteries are limited.I hope they can improve them so electric cars could become more feasible for even long term driving without having to charge them every so often.Then again,you also have hydrogen fuel cell cars.Great things,but limited.Let’s hope they improve all these things for clean energy.

This is how it starts with ‘True Believers’ in Global Warming. Once they notice that something isn’t quite right, especially if they report it honestly, they begin to question all their premises.

The Democrats controlled the U.S. House of Representatives from about 1931 to 1995, with a couple of exceptions. During that period, Republicans held the majority in the House two times, once in 1946 and in 1952, and the Democrats won the majority back in 1954 and held it for 40 straight years until 1995.

Even if that were true, since the Supreme Court found a right to abortion hidden in the Constitution, there’s not much that Congress could have done about it. Any law they passed would have been ruled unconstitutional.
And you’d think the Democrats would have wanted to do something about it too, given most of those kids were black. It’s almost like reducing black birth-rates was the intention all along.
If Michael Moore has produced a film revealing the truth of the over-hyped “renewables” dependence on hydrocarbon fuels, it’s not because he thinks we should stop the renewables and use hydrocarbon fuels.

Note that the capitalism in the “green” industry is not free market, but cronyism turned up to ten. So there is a valid point there. But the cronyism in fossil fuels is a five, at best, in a Republican administration.

However, my reply is a ray of hope, by way of real-life, personal account: my wife voted for a certain, allegedly handsome, progeny of a former prime minister in our last federal election but is now firmly on board with a conservative political option. I have patiently, patiently discussed facts around so many of the worst Liberal policies and decisions we’ve seen in the past almost four years and now my wife agrees JT has been far more bad than good (diplomacy) for Canada. Below are two photographs demonstrating the effects of an exposed light filament where exposed to a vacuum( left) and in a pure CO2 environment (right). As can be seen, the filament exposed only to CO2 is dimmer and cooler, showing that CO2 causes COOLING, not heating, of the air around it.
The light bulb experiment proves that CO2 is an active radiative gas. In a vacuum some of the energy from the filament does radiate through the glass, but it is a small amount. Vacuum is a pretty good insulator, keeping the filament hot.
In the CO2 filled bulb the CO2 moves heat, mostly by convection, from the filament and transfers it to the glass. CO2 also transfers a smaller amount of heat by radiation. The loss of heat makes the filament run colder.
The experiment is a good example of why climate modelers have so much trouble. It is very difficult to identify all the variables that affect how the climate works. What it shows is that they haven’t sussed to the facts that much of climate behavior is heavily influenced by turbulent flow which varies on every scale imaginable and impossible to calculate except under very controlled conditions.

Just for a sample of how this stuff is all small potatoes (and business as usual for the weather, but we all already know that), China may have killed five million pigs, but that still leaves them with 995 million pigs they did not kill.

I think this has been expressed as the aim of Extinction Rebellion, whereas the UN seem to want a global financial redistribution from the developed to the undeveloped nations via such things as the carbon tax, but what is the pathway whereby such taxes raised in our societies find their way to the rest of the world. Are they collected in one big pot and handed over to the UN? I haven’t found a satisfactory explanation anywhere.

Whether I think his solutions are right for the working man or the human race, his milieu of interest in the plebian side of life made him one of those on the left who understood Trump’s appeal – not as if the beautiful people on the right got it any better.

The problem with Moore’s realization that government policies have not had their intended consequences is his tendency to double down on demanding more government policies. (when it comes to the degree of protectionism exhibited by the Trump administration, you might say that they could learn the same lesson. Although loosing the gordion knot is the best way to make American industry more competitive (and domestic protection, esp. with regard to China, may arguably turn out to be more foreign policy than domestic – if not economically rational in the abstract.)
The realization I continue to hope for is to gain allies like Michael Moore for a truce in the fossil fuel vs. renewable wars so we can go to war with the grid. It will remain relevant in concentrated areas but the worst of these renewable subsidies is that they prop up the grid rather than encourage technologies for going around it . . . think cellphones vs. landlines.

To understand why Trump is doing what he is doing, you only need to listen to what he and his team say is the it goal: To end all tariffs.
That is not protectionism.
It is putting an end to past agreements wherein the U.S. gets the worst of all worlds.
As it stood prior to him taking office, other countries had open access to U.S. markets, and we were penalized so heavily we were all but locked out of those same country’s markets.
In the case of China, it was even worse: Forced technology transfers, intellectual property theft on steroids, rampant espionage o n multiple fronts, and no ability to sell into their markets at all for many sorts of products and services.
US taxpayers even subsidized shipping from China to the US , to the extent they could ship anything to a person here for cheaper than someone in the U.S. could do so.
Meanwhile, they are allowing massive quantities of fentanyl to be sent here, actively killing our people by the tens of thousands of year, and ruining the lives of many tens of millions more.
Last week when Trump out his foot down regarding broken promises made face to face with Xi, the media reaction was to ignore totally the fact that they had failed to even begin to increase agricultural purchasing or to stop the fentanyl smuggling!

Being a local in TC many of us were, (are), shocked that Moore has finally shown a bit of candor. It helps to know that in the past few years he’s been knocked down a few notches by personal and professional set backs. Maybe this was his epiphany that a documentary film can actually document reality.

I think most skeptics would welcome a big push towards nuclear for power. At the very least, it would take demand and hence price pressure off of the fossil fuels used for power generation.

In reality, well before any such stage was reached, energy would become horrifyingly expensive – which means that everything would become horrifyingly expensive … ….everyone would become miserably poor and economic growth …
Even if one were to electrify all of transport, industry, heating and so on, so much renewable generation and balancing/storage equipment would be needed to power it that astronomical new requirements for steel, concrete, copper, glass, carbon fibre, neodymium, shipping and haulage etc etc would appear.
All these things are made using mammoth amounts of energy: far from achieving massive energy savings, which most plans for a renewables future rely on implicitly, we would wind up needing far more energy, which would mean even more vast renewables farms – and even more materials and energy to make and maintain them and so on. The scale of the building would be like nothing ever attempted by the human race.
Please do not forget that even if/when we create the next electricity generating technology we will still need petroleum and other forms of fossilized resources to carry-on with our “modern” technologies.

The left is actively trying to get as many people as they can who are from poor countries and breed like flies, into places with huge resources where they can do exactly that. Not exactly a recipe for population reduction.
We know what puts a halt to rampant population growth: Education. The growth of population is inversely correlated to the educational attainment level of women, to name the one factor with the best correlation.
As for the environmental movement, it is hard to know what his worldview is if he thinks that the greenies from the 1960s are now corporate leaders responsible for population growth.
The green movement now consists mainly of hardcore socialists, and have no coherent plan for bringing about any of their goals, beyond creating chaos, deindustrializing our infrastructure, making everything really expensive, and keeping poor countries poor.
Poor people have lots of kids compared to people with more wealth. Chaos and deindustrialization, if these ever become worldwide realities, will be game over for the environment. People are not gonna lay down and die, are not going to starve quietly, are not going to stop doing what people have always done. Lifting the undeveloped world out of poverty via cheap & abundant energy is the solution to environmental destruction.
Everyone in the world knows about birth control pills, condoms, and what happens when people have sex. “Family planning” is what people are doing when they are poor and having a more kids is thought to be desirable. What he is really saying, without saying so, is he wants people that he disapproves of to be forced to not have a family. There are few ways to do that in any sort of enforced way. Maybe he thinks a Planned Parenthood clinic in every village will do the trick, or maybe he dreams of putting chemicals in their water supplies to make them sterile. The way he phrases what he wants is revealing: “Why don’t we provide family planning to everyone in the world?”
HE wants WE to enforce HIS idea of how many kids a person can have on the entire world.
Hell…even China has now reversed their one child policy, so good luck to him. People in hell want ice water. They aint gonna get it.
His ideas about transportation are just batty. He, like AOC and her intellectual ilk, have exactly zero actual knowledge or understanding of the actual issues with the things they say will solve problems. People do not use ships to travel around the world because it takes a very long time and is very dangerous. Not like cruise ships he says? Then like what…cattle cars?

Not gonna happen. Who has a few weeks to cross an ocean for a vacay or business meeting? No one, that is who. Few did it when it was the only option.
Trains as overland transport are well studied and well understood. And there are some very fast trains nowadays. But they are really only a viable way to get around at a certain scale and under certain conditions. Do they really think the entire US can be connected by rail, and that people outside of densely populated area can use them for getting to work, or for travelling home for Thanksgiving? Someone needs to tell them about rails to trails. Or about the actual energy efficiency of rail vs air travel for travelling various distances and at particular population densities. No one is asking questions about how to get rid of planes and bring back rail and boat travel because those are awful ways to get around compared to how we do it nowadays…which is exactly why those methods fell into disfavor and the industries supporting them died out.
In short, these are people who do not know very much, have a controlling attitude towards everything, want to be in charge of everybody, think every idea in their head is a great one that everyone needs to get on board with, and are in various stages of ignorance about how things actually work and why human nature prevents the things they want from working the way they think they will.

I want to see this documentary. Micheal Moore has no attraction in this household but we know that even he can have some good points to be considered:
From a place far, far away up a distant canyon in WA is our home. There are no utilities of any flavor except satellite connections, if that is considered a utility. We do get 1 bar of a 1x cell connection which can be used for a text, sigh…. And we could hire the PUD to install poles/wire for 1.75 miles of canyon and trees for a measly $250k. No thanks.
This is a prime case study for solar as there ARE no reasonable alternatives. We installed a 3kW system with a lead acid battery bank for low light conditions. Subsidies or not we would’ve installed our system anyway. We live here because we can as two retired and disabled folks raising a few sheep, goats, pigs, geese, etc. There would be no use for this beautiful land except for a weekend “roughing it” camping trip except for solar. But we don’t rough it as we enjoy most of the same luxuries a city/urban/connected home wound have except there is no A/C or blow driers around this house. We don’t save any money vs the grid due to battery retirement and replacement and, gasp, generator fuel to recharge the batteries when there is no or inadequate sunlight Oct through Feb each year.
Many solar installs, to me, don’t pass the sniff test. First, without the incentive/rebate they wouldn’t do it. Second, it may offset the power bill as the main priority but it doesn’t help if the utility provider has a fault. Third, the thought is that its “green” but I’m not too sure of that. It may be green to the owner not not the neighbor of the manufacturers of the equipment or the dumps at end-of-life. Fourth, for those that are grid connected it creates a major headache in load balancing for the utility provider and offsets revenues needed for line maintenance, repair, etc.
As said before this is a really complex matrix and is politically and emotionally charged. But sure thankful for the technology.
Add in EVs, windmills, etc. Its a crazy matrix. I love hydro-electric but that is politically charged. Also geothermal if available but hard to scale for a large output.
But surely the frighteningly logical next step, if windmills and electric cars will not save the planet, is to ban the use of fossil fuels for any purpose whatsoever.

I dislike AND despise the man, his work as well as his politics. if, however, “Planet of the Humans” factually and accurately demonstrates the folly & unworkability of “Green Energy” and results in educating (at least some) staunch Green Dreamers into a more realistic view of our modern world’s energy needs, then — as much as I can’t believe I’m saying this — kudos to Moore.

I can see heads explode as they try to prevent the inconvenient facts about renewables from the becoming public. Piercing the global warmists bubble is very difficult for sceptics but is more effective if done from the inside. Whilst I get some encouragement how we have progressed the fight against this warmest cult but I have been surprised at how few whistleblowers have been coming forward. Occasionally you hear a story about ex NASA employees or other insiders going rogue but the stories always seem to get buried quickly especially by the mainstream media.
Reading a JoNova blog on mismanagement and misrepresentation of weather data from the Bureau of Meteorology in Australia and clear evidence of corruption it staggers me that there isn’t an insider ( or disgruntled employee) in the know to spill the beans. If one multiplies the corruption at the Bureau a multitude of times around the world it is inevitable that whistleblowers will come through. I think that the process would be hastened if governments conducted audits on some of these institutions and prosecuted people for the clear manipulation of data. At least that would provide an incentive for people to spill the beans. As it stands with no effort by governments to investigate these issues there is a disincentive to speak out as the warmists are very quick to publicly shame, remove from employment, destroy careers of those that speak out.

I have seen this “demonstration” posted a number of times as “evidence” that adding CO2 to the atmosphere and then exposing it to a heat source causes the temperature in the bottle with the CO2 to rise more than the one without added CO2, thus “validating” the current AGW theory. Michael Moore does not have much respect for truth when he’s on a mission to make a film with a message. There was a scene in one of his movies (Columbine? Sicko? – I can’t remember which) where he is standing in an urban park in the middle of a brand new mixed social/private housing development on a former rail yard near downtown Toronto – and he says “This is a Canadian slum” (the point being, of course to show how much more attractive and safe and wholesome it was than those nasty American slums). I know the area well, we even looked at buying a condo there a couple of times. Made me wonder how many of his other “facts” are that made-up.
On that basis, his respect for truth is on a par with the inimitable Gore.

Forget about saving the planet; it will heal itself after we’re gone. In the end it’s about saving ourselves. It could be said that we’ll get what we deserve, but really we’re just doing what any dominant species would do given the chance. Humans aren’t nearly as smart as we think we are.
Nature bats last. It will deal with us and it won’t be pretty when it does.

Production Capacity is growing exponentially, and we have no idea how much more it will increase as technology advances. People are starving only because of politics and artificial barriers to producing and transporting food to them and due to converting food into useless, inefficient, damaging, polluting FUEL and plowing food under and …..not because we can’t produce enough.

30 billion people… won’t that be fun!! Where do you propose we put the other 8 million species we share the planet with? That’s our problem, we’re focused on growth instead of balance. As the dominant species we are clearly unable to evolve to be able to manage our numbers. And as I pointed out, the planet will balance things for us whether we like it or not.

Seriously, the Earth can easily support a huge increase in the population of virtually all species, although they don’t all grow at the same rate. There are VAST expanses of empty, habitable land, islands, you name it all over the Earth, and I don’t mean Siberia or Antarctica. I used to marvel at the emptiness as I flew over places all over the world and wondered why there is such a clamor for reducing the population. I almost felt I was alone flying over the emptiness for hours without a sign of human life.
So, when exactly is this “soon”? A month? A year? 10 years? And who is this “we”? Didn’t realise Humanity™ is a hive mind. Though that would explain the voices in my head.
It’s a bit confusing though. Like when I saw my aunt play soccer and she really sucked at it, and I thought “wow, we humans really suck at soccer”. But then I saw Ronaldo do it and I thought “wow, we humans are really good at soccer.” Some humans weirdly don’t seem to belong in this hive mind, like blacks and other minorities. Because when I read about these people commiting crimes, the response is always “Not all of them are like this! It would be racist to suggest that they are all the same.” It’s like they are treating them as individuals or something. But that can’t be right. We are all the same!

I was once a member of Greenpeace when it wasn’t corporate and a “believer ” partially for self interest business reasons but in my heart I knew it was the overblown con job it is and I can’t deny that .
