Coal Subsidies and Jake Tapper’s Climate Emergency Meltdown… Lions and Tigers and Bears!!!

Guest double-post by David Middleton

I probably should have broken this up into two or three posts… But I was rolling… (If at any point you can’t tell if I’m being serious or sarcastic, go with sarcastic).

Part 1. G20 Nations Triple Coal Subsidies… “Despite Climate Crisis”

G20 countries triple coal power subsidies despite climate crisis
Major economies pledged a decade ago to phase out all aid for fossil fuels

G20 countries have almost tripled the subsidies they give to coal-fired power plants in recent years, despite the urgent need to cut the carbon emissions driving the climate crisis.

The bloc of major economies pledged a decade ago to phase out all fossil fuel subsidies.

The figures, published in a report by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and others, show that Japan is one of the biggest financial supporters of coal…

Is anyone else fed up with moronic phrases like these?

  • Climate crisis.
  • Climate catastrophe.
  • Climate emergency.

Part Deux: CNN’s Jake Tapper Babbles Incoherently About the “Manmade Climate Emergency”

Just listen as CNN’s Jake Tapper “obsesses over ‘climate emergency’“…

JAKE TAPPER: I want to ask you a question about climate change. The Director of National Intelligence, Dan Coats, said in a January report on worldwide threats that the climate emergency is “likely to fuel compens…competition for resources, economic distress and social disconsent, content.” It is a priority for the DNI, Coats. The EPA this week, however, rolled back part of President Obama’s Clean Power Plan, letting states…set their own limits for coal plower, power plants emissions. Do you think human-induced climate emergency is a threat to the United States?

VICE PRESIDENT MIKE PENCE: Well, what…what I will tell you is that we’ll always follow the science on that in this administration.

TAPPER: The science says…

PENCE: But what…but what…

TAPPER: …it is.

PENCE: …we…but what we won’t do…and the Clean Power Plan was all about that…was hamstringing energy in this country, raising the costs of utility rates for working families across this country…

TAPPER: But is it a threat?

PENCE: …while other nations like China and India do absolutely nothing or make illusory promises decades down the road to deal with it. You know, the truth of the matter is, with the advent of…

TAPPER: Yeah.

PENCE: …natural gas, with the natural gas explosion that’s developing, with clean coal technology, we’re seeing…we’re seeing a significant reduction…

TAPPER: But is…

PENCE: …in carbon emissions all across this country.

TAPPER: But is what people are calling a climate emergency, is it a threat? Do you think it’s a threat, manmade climate emergency is a threat?

PENCE: I think the answer to that is going to be based upon the science.

TAPPER: Well, the science says yes. I’m asking you what…

PENCE: Well…

TAPPER: …you think.

PENCE: …There’s many in the science that…
TAPPER: The science community in your own administration, at NOAA…

PENCE: I got it.

TAPPER: … at the, at the DNI, they all say it’s a threat.

PENCE: I got it. Look, what the President…

TAPPER: But you won’t, for some reason.

PENCE: … has said, what we have said is that we are not going to raise utility rates. Remember what President Obama said?

TAPPER: But it’s not a threat?

PENCE: He said…he said…he had his, his climate change plan. He said it’s necessarily going to cause utility rates to skyrocket, and that would force us into these green technologies. Now you got Democrats all running for President that are running on a Green New Deal that would break…

TAPPER: Okay.

PENCE: …this economy.

TAPPER: So you don’t think it is a threat, is all I’m saying? You don’t think it is a threat?

PENCE: I think we’re making great progress reducing carbon emissions, America has the cleanest air and water in the world. We’ll continue to use market forces…

TAPPER: That’s not true. We don’t have the cleanest air and water in the world. We don’t.

(LAUGHTER)
(CROSSTALK)

PENCE: Okay.

TAPPER: You get back to me with some statistics that show it.

PENCE: But we’re making…we’re making progress on reducing carbon emissions. We’re doing it through technology, through natural gas, through continuing to support, as our administration is…

TAPPER: You just rolled back all these clean…these clean coal…

PENCE: Turn back to nuclear energy, clean energy. The answer, though, is not to raise the utility rates…

TAPPER: Okay.

PENCE: …of millions of utility rate payers across the country.

NewsBusters

Jake, there is no scientific basis for the phrase “climate emergency.” Although there is a basis for the phrase “manmade climate emergency.” Obama’s Clean Power Plan and other regulatory malfeasance created a “manmade climate emergency.” President Trump has subdued that emergency. Alexandria Occasional Cortex’s Green New Deal cultural revolution would be a womanmade climate catastrophe. Hell, even the sainted IPCC tell us that the “cure” for your “climate emergency” would be a genuine international-made climate calamity .

However, this is not a climate crisis, climate emergency nor a climate catastrophe…

This would be a climate crisis, climate emergency and a climate catastrophe all rolled into one giant climatic cluster frack…

Bonus Part Trois: DNI Worldwide Threat Assessment

Furthermore Jake, the 2019 Worldwide Threat Assessment of the US Intelligence Community never mentions a “climate emergency”… Nor does it state that “manmade climate change” is a “threat” to these tangentially United States. The word “climate” appears in the 42 page document 6 times:

  1. “The United States will probably have to manage the impact of global human security challenges, such as threats to public health, historic levels of human displacement, assaults on religious freedom, and the negative effects of environmental degradation and climate change.”
  2. “Although the international community has made tenuous improvements to global health security, these gains may be inadequate to address the challenge of what we anticipate will be more frequent outbreaks of infectious diseases because of rapid unplanned urbanization, prolonged humanitarian crises, human incursion into previously unsettled land, expansion of international travel and trade, and regional climate change.”
  3. “Environment and Climate Change”
  4. Global environmental and ecological degradation, as well as climate change, are likely to fuel competition for resources, economic distress, and social discontent through 2019 and beyond.
  5. Climate hazards such as extreme weather, higher temperatures, droughts, floods, wildfires, storms, sea level rise, soil degradation, and acidifying oceans are intensifying, threatening infrastructure, health, and water and food security.
  6. Ruhani’s ability to reform the economy remains limited, given pervasive corruption, a weak banking sector, and a business climate that discourages foreign investment and trade.

Item number 5 is 97% horst schist and climate change is very much like schist… It happens. Some of it is anthropogenic and some of it is natural. (How can anthropogenic be unnatural? Humans are natural.) The effects of climate change alter some conditions positively and others negatively. The intelligence community’s (IC) job is to determine how these global changes affect our national security and communicate it to the President and the people who actually defend this nation.

The IC’s job is not to determine if there is a “mandmade climate emergency”, meriting the destruction of our economy and a Maoist-style eradication of individual liberty.

Double Bonus Part Quatre: The Russians Are Coming!

If a climate “egermency” actually occurs, the Russians will let us know about it…

66 thoughts on “Coal Subsidies and Jake Tapper’s Climate Emergency Meltdown… Lions and Tigers and Bears!!!

  1. and to be clear, at least in Australia, there is no coal subsidy. What they actually mean is that we aren’t imposing extra taxes as much as they would like. That is their definition

    • Yes, indeed. The gumment also subsidises living by not taxing our breathing as much as it could.

  2. Lions, tigers, and bears are real threats to humans that share a common environment with them.
The ‘Climate Emergency’? Not so much….

  3. He was desperately trying to maneuver Pence into saying “no, it’s not much of a threat” so that Tapper could say “HE’S A DENIER! HE WON’T ADMIT IT’S A THREAT!!!!”

failing that, he wanted him to say it IS a threat, and then Tapper could shriek “HE ADMITS ITS A THREAT BUT DOES NOTHING!!!”

and Pence wouldn’t play his game and say what he wanted.

    • I would have said, “Jake, only a total fracking retard would say ‘climate emergency’. Did your parents feed you lead paint chips when you were a child?”

      • I call him The Fake Yapper. It’s the moniker for him stuck in my head now, so whenever I see him or hear him on TV that’s what pops up.

      • That is exactly what Pence should have said. What makes me want to hurl is not so much the propagandists such as Trapper but the mealy non answering politicians like Pence who hem and haw around these stupid questions.

People like Pence need to grow a pair and insist that these Political Scientists promoting the manufactured Climate Emergency nonsense to put proof on the table next to their peer reviewed consensus or STFU.

      • David, maybe you would have said.

Don’t approach hostile interviewers without coaching, briefing, training on the job.

        Because a job it Is.

  4. I decided to watch some of the Democratic debate this evening and everyone on that stage is like Jake Tapper on steroids and about as funny as Saturday Night Live.

      • That should have been a clip of the immortal Flip Wilson. In my opinion, anyway.

He could have played both Cory AND Kamala – and been much, much funnier.

The writers of those days, though, could not have come up with Castro Abortions for Transgender Women, or Williamson Moonier Than Moonbeam. Just not possible for even the most fevered imagination.

    • They were about as funny as a funeral.

This will be good for DJT.
      – A circular firing squad on Creepy Uncle Joe Biden getting more intense in the next 10 months.
I can’t see how he can survive that with the current Left Lunatics running his party.
      – As Ted Cruz called them, they are in a clown car with its brakes out and can only steer Left.

  5. I’m sorry David, but (in my view) VP Pence always seemed to be on the defensive here in his interview with Tapper. I almost half-expected Tapper to start throwing tomatoes at him. If VP Pence’s statements represent what the Trump administration believes is a winning strategy on the CAGW issue and carbon emissions, I wish them luck.

Saying that they are addressing carbon emissions (and keeping energy prices down) in the manner laid out by Pence no doubt has its political advantages–I understand that. And maybe it will help get Trump
re-elected–maybe. But, on the other hand, I am a firm believer in the saying that the best defense is a good offense, and there is no shortage of scientific weapons with which to go on offense here against the CAGW scare. The day the Trump administration decides to accept this line of thinking is a day I will celebrate.

David, if were playing a football game, I would want to spend as much time as possible on offense if I expected to win it. That is my 2 cents for whatever it is worth.

  6. Those who are absolutely sure they see the Emperors New Clothes are now wearing the same fabric.
Incredible number of fat naked Emperors strutting about our media party.
    Climate Change?
What do they mean by this phrase?
The way the “Concerned Ones” are using it, is as if they are saying “Water Wet” every time they mean water.
Climate has always changed, change is part of climate,so what the hell does climate change mean?
Without specifying what this “Climate Emergency” is and means, the phrase is rapidly heading for mockery.
Of course none from the Cult of Calamitous Climate want defined terms, clarity would expose them to the idiocy of their position.
Power is their desire,by any means, any means at all.
If scaring children until they suicide will get them to their goal, then whats a few children?
Now “Its an emergency” .Oh good, let us observe.
Will any of the Poser’s of Great Virtue, actually live as if such an emergency exists?

I reached burnout a long time ago,I have no F’s to give.
The idiocy of CAGW is weapons grade, civilization may fall.
Now this might be a good thing,as the parasitic overload is exhausting.

What truly amazes me is the very people who could not survive a week without the charity of productive citizens, are out to destroy the ability of those productive people to produce those surpluses that feed these same freeloaders.

    Then a Carbon based life form,labelling CO2 a POLLUTANT.
There is no intelligent life in our Bureaucracies.
    Nor “Newsrooms”.

I think we are getting a lesson of the iron law of bureaucracies, where they grow to consume every resource and control every aspect of life.
Because they no longer serve any useful purpose.
If this is the case, there is a massive cull coming.
    Cycles.
History indicates that everything occurs in cycles, whether they be real or just the vision of a pattern seeking brain.

  7. Ahhhhggh!!

    I watched the debate!

    NOW WE’R ALL GONNA DIE!
IT’S A CATALOG OF CALAMITOUS CLIMATE CATASTROPHES OF CATACLYSMIC CONSEQUENCES !!!
AAGGHHH! WOE!, WOE AND THRICE WOE!

(P.S. the Highland ad was funny 🙂 )

  8. David M. Those ice age videos should be collected along with ice age news and interviews into a series to be shown broadly. Even Nimoy uses the phrase about happening sooner than we think. I heard a lot of the same kind of phraseology except the temp was going the other way.

I’ve pointed out to whoever would listen that virtually all the warming that’s occurred in the last several centuries occurred before 1940. The “iceage cometh” 35yrs of cooling that followed brought the temperatures down about 0.4C by 1980, afterwhich the modern “warming” period that caused all the fuss rose for 20yrs, not surpassing the late 30s records. It was when (and why) the large fiddles of the temperature records were made. Pushing down the 30s to mid 40s highs by half a degree to make the 1998 el Nino higher than 1937 max temperature, which at the time it was not. GISS got this done shortly before Hansen’s retirement several years latern and HadCrut and others followed suit.

These icy videos newsreports and articles should be put before peoples faces at every opportunity.

    • Tack on to that the fact that the starting point of the warming was the coldest century of the Holocene.

  9. “womanmade climate catastrophe” ?
Oh oh…You gonna get blitzed for that ! lol

  10. “Lions and Tigers”
Reminds of a joke from the 1950s.
A beatnik standing on a street corner in Greenwich Village. A cool dude just standing there snapping his fingers.
Another dude comes along and asks:
‘Hey man, why are you snapping your fingers?”
“Keeps the Lions and Tigers away.”
“There are no Lions and Tigers in the Village.”
    Cool dude keeps snapping.
    “Does a hell of job.”

  11. The Trump administration should get it over with and say:

    CO2is not
    a problem

In other news, Colorado University’s Sea Level Research Group, CU SLRG – say, “Cue Slerg” has been down for a day now. They haven’t issued a new release for nearly 18 months so it will be interesting to see if we are in for another major rewrite of historic satellite sea level data to bump up their 0.084 mm/yr² sea level rise acceleration claim they made in January of 2018.

    • Yes Steve, I agree that CO2 is not a problem. There is good evidence that rising CO2 FOLLOWS temperature rise. i.e. the extra CO2 comes from the vast store of dissolved CO2 in the oceans as they warm (very slightly) during the 1970 to 2005 Grand Maximum of the sun.
There was a post on 25th on WUWT re missing warming in part of the Pacific ocean. Allan MacRae had 3 comments. In the first of these he gave a link to a recent paper of his:-
https://thsresearch.files.wordpress.com/2019/06/co2-global-warming-climate-and-energy-june2019-final-.pdf (Copy & paste if necessary or go to the comment of 25th)
The sun has now gone quiet. Deep minimums are expected…..Cooling? Falling CO2??

  12. We have a very real and well understood budget crisis. We have solid statutory provisions that describe our non-discretionary spending obligations. We have solid actuarial projections of the population. We have reasonable estimates of long-run economic growth and what sorts of tax revenue will be or could be collected under various scenarios. When they feed all this information into economic models, they quickly devolve into deficits and debt that have never been seen before in the history of the world. If you let them run long enough (only 15-20 years, so not very long at all), some of these economic models break down and cannot calculate any possible workable outcome.

Compare this to the so-called climate “crisis”, and it’s painfully obvious that the country is being cruelly misled and distracted from real, consequential problems by those who want to lead us astray.

  13. An almost endless stream of brain dead drivel now emanates from both The Guardian and the BBC in which the meaningless climate emergency phrases roll out ever more hysterically and frequently.
They seem to be incapable of joined up thought and have no sense of irony when they say things like ‘we have had a climate crisis for thirty years’.

Meanwhile, the trust in and popularity of, both Guardian and BBC plummets.

The BBC has shrilly been bleating about record temperatures for June in Europe, the track record suggests this will just be a selective distortion at best. In the U.K. most sensible people are hopeful for some of this hot weather instead of the chill and grey weather we have had most of this year.

The louder they shout the less credibility they have – The only positive thing about this constant stream of deceit and nonsense.

    • The Guardian has now taken to counting visits to its website, and sending messages saying, “You have read x free articles this month”. Creepy.

        • I have never had any doubt about the Guardian, it is always claiming to be balanced and objective.
They are almost correct in their own description of themselves.
The only letters missing are “un” and objectionable as in, unbalanced and objectionable.
Any publication that allows George Monbiot to gush forth and not put a qualifier on the articles he writes, is not worth spending time on.

  14. America has the cleanest air in the world, as long as you apply reasonable error bars. It would be tied with about ten other countries. link

You could argue that on top of a mountain somewhere is the cleanest air in the world and that mountain is in America. The point is that the claim that America has the world’s cleanest air is not ridiculous.

Arguing that America does not have the cleanest air in the world is kind of pathetic.

    • And who fought for and created the laws that rolled back the air pollution of the 50’s –70’s and gave us this wonderful fairly clean air you crow about, Bob? The Repub/conservatives? Never. It was the Dems, as always, fighting to actually protect this country while dragging the conservatives kicking and screaming along with them.
What is pathetic, Bob, is crowing about having the cleanest air while rolling back the very laws and regulations that keep it relatively clean and healthy, which is exactly what the Rump/Pence crowd has been doing.
So breathe deep, Bob, and thank a Dem for the ability to do so while you still can. trump is committed to making America’s air great again!

      • Were you under the impression that I’m a Republican?

Eventually, prosperous people everywhere decide that they don’t want to die breathing polluted air. As long as there’s democracy, the people will get what they want.

Why did President Trump win the election? Simple, the Democrats were shafting the average Americans who make up the majority of the population. The people noticed and democracy prevailed. p.s. I’m also not a Democrat.

        • I didn’t say what party I thought you belong to. Do you think Trump isn’t shafting you and the middle class now?

  15. Pence’s response pretty much confirms what I believe, which is that ALL politicians know exactly how much of a threat “climate change” is, which is near zero, but they don’t want to shut down the revenue stream. The current US administration have hinted at exposing the fraud, but as yet have done nothing about it. Why not? They have had plenty of time to act, and thousands of opportunities to speak out. Follow the money..

  16. A thought struck me the other day. – : If, in the parable of the good samaritan, the said samaritan had been just as skint as the unfortunate traveller; what would have been the outcome?
It seems that the green new deal is going precisely in that direction.

  17. From the article: “Climate hazards such as extreme weather, higher temperatures, droughts, floods, wildfires, storms, sea level rise, soil degradation, and acidifying oceans are intensifying, threatening infrastructure, health, and water and food security.”

Well, as David said above, this is pure BS (Bad Science) that anyone familiar with a search engine could discover in less than an hour of searching, yet this misinformation is included in the DNI Worldwide Threat Assessment.

That doesn’t inspire much confidence in the DNI Worldwide Threat Assessment. What else did they get wrong?

The Director of National Intelligence, Dan Coats, ought to fire whoever was responsible for putting CAGW (Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming) falsehoods in the DNI Worldwide Threat Assessment. They are obviously incompetent (or worse) and not fit for this serious job.

  18. It is Mania Time!
Stocks and bonds not just up but both measurably speculative.
Hitherto, most stock booms would be accompanied by rising rates for long-dated Treasury bonds.
It is the almost everything up buying frenzy.
At the same time the world’s political markets have gone hysterical.
Both are crowd action and hysteria eventually exhausts itself.
In the financial markets frantic speculation is measurable and this is now V. extreme.
For decades, I’ve been writing that in a boom everyone gets unusually busy. Including those in politics. Particularly the Left.
Both could run out of energy at virtually the same time and fail.
    Soon.
Liquidity problems are often discovered in the fall.

  19. I found it terribly rude of Vice-President Pence to refuse to allow himself to be continually interrupted like that.

  20. I’m more sick of the moronic phrases: “Tackle climate change”, “Defeat climate change”, as if that’s even possible.

  21. I recently had a co worker bring up the climate emergency. I asked, “do you know anyone who’s died from climate change? Any friends who had a friend or relative forced to move cross country?” Crickets… Then I added, “maybe it’s not an emergency, you’re reacting to media, not climate”. They actually seemed to think about that.

  22. From the article: “TAPPER: But is what people are calling a climate emergency, is it a threat? Do you think it’s a threat, manmade climate emergency is a threat?

PENCE: I think the answer to that is going to be based upon the science.

TAPPER: Well, the science says yes. I’m asking you what…

    PENCE: Well…

    TAPPER: …you think.

PENCE: …There’s many in the science that…”

Well, I think Pence was trying to say what Trump has said before, that “other scientists don’t agree with the climate science “concensus”, but Tapper kept interrupting him and Pence didn’t finish the above thought.

Politicians are not scientists and don’t want to get into a technical debate because they are not sure they have command of all the facts right off the top of their head. I imagine there are a lot of us like that because climate change is a very big, complicated subject.

What Trump needs to do is to get Dr. Happer out there in public debating the reporters and others. Dr. Happer could handle Tapper’s questions quite easily.

    • VP Pence is too courteous. He should have ridiculed Tapper for the phrase “climate emergency.”

  23. David Middleton,

A couple things you might find interesting if you have not seen them before (or even if you have).

As you stated above, “The IC’s job is not to determine if there is a “mandmade climate emergency.”” It is, however, the IC’s job to make assessments of various scenarios asked of them. for example, in the 1970’s the CIA warned that Global Cooling could cause terrorism.

    http://www.thegwpf.com/1974-cia-warned-global-cooling-would-cause-terrorism/

Even more interesting, and a reference that I forgot I had, is an article in Harper’s Magazine titled “THE COMING ICE AGE.”

    https://harpers.org/archive/1958/09/the-coming-ice-age/

this article was published in…1958! And the ironic thing is, the article states that the new ice age would result from

a slow warming and rising of the ocean that is now taking place.

In other words, they predicted that a new ice age would be the result of…Global Warming! And this was in 1958.

The article references the two scientists who developed this hypothesis, but I haven’t done any deeper diving.

    • Like I noted in the post, the IC’s job is to advise POTUS on how changing conditions in the world affect potential national security threats to this nation. Not to determine if the changing conditions in the world pose a threat, much less, advise POTUS on how to “fix” the changing conditions. Glaicer bulldozing New York City would definitely affect potential national security threats to this nation.

I have a copy of that Harper’s Magazine article. One of the highest awards that the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (member since 1981) issues is the Maurice Ewing Gold Medal.

  24. That’s a damn shame. Tapper used to write columns that made some sort of sense. Then he went over the edge and now he is a complete idiot. Maybe he’s been eating spoiled bean curd or something.

Pence is too nice a guy for this kind of thing. Too mild-mannered and polite. It’s a good thing I’m not the VEEP. I certainly have no qualms about telling some hyperaggressive dorkwad like Tapper to STFU, but that’s just me.

No, there is NO emergency, Tapper, you imbecile. You are going to find yourself being mocked repeatedly for being a completely brainwashed idiot.

    • Back when he was an investigative reporter for ABC, he didn’t seem like such a radical flaming left-wing moron.

      • It would appear that he started to say ‘likely to fuel compensation’ before changing hastily to ‘competition’. He was probably right first time.

      • Unfortunately most reporters these days have decided to be advocates of their personal positions instead of just reporting on events. They have convinced themselves that the real purpose of journalism is to “tell compelling stories” in order to “make a positive impact on the world”. Edward R. Murrow must be spinning in his grave.

        • Murrow used his bully pulpit to tirelessly to help take down Joe McCarthy, Trump’s moral grandfather through Roy Cohn. Remember that when you hear today’s journalists pushing right-wing fact-benders for the truth.

          And wake up.

      • The playbook was different then. Now the MSM requires ALL newsreaders (this guy is not a journalist) who want to get paid to act like flaming left-wing morons.

    • Agreed. I’d love to see him with egg on his face at some future point. But that’s just me.

  25. I like the 2 words “climate subsidies”From my CPA experience i have challenged more than 1 warmist to find the number in Exxon’s annual report to shareholders. If I read a sharper article, it seems they may be referring to using depletion and depreciation expenses as tax deductions. Same as when Walmart sells a Pepsi and deducts68 cents from the dollar sale as Cost of Goods sold.

Oil pays for seismic before drilling and may never spud a new well. It is a deductible expense. Not a subsidy.
Ironic Sarbanes-Oxly was crafted because of Enron which was in the oil patch and still is. (Buffett owns their pipeline) GE owns their Wind
The law SOX requires officers to sign to the authenticity of their data so they can’t hide “subsidies” if there were any.

I do understand there were some subsides for drillers for Coal bed methane.

More on SOX. It demands internal controls to safeguard the data. The warmist industries, allow the scientist to delete and manipulate data. Deny FOIA requests which uncover mishandling. SOX separates data gathering, storage and processing workers.

Joe Romm at Center for American Soros is a loud source of claims on subsidies.

  26. Is anyone else fed up with moronic phrases like these?

    – climate crisis.
    – climate catastrophe.
    – climate emergency.

Because of great success the list got prolonged:

    – climate crisis.
