This Striking Climate Change Visualisation Is Now Customisable for Any Place on Earth

By Brian Kahn on 18 Jun 2019 at 2:30PM

When University of Reading climate scientist released his warming stripes visualisation for the globe last year, people freaked (in a good way). The minimalist graphic stripped out unnecessary clutter and told the story of global warming in blue and red stripes.

On Monday, Hawkings released a new website that allows users to create warming stripes for nearly every country, and even some cities and US states. The data visualisations reveal a stark warming trend nearly everywhere, presenting an opportunity to shame your climate denying uncle who thinks a cold day disproves the climate crisis is afoot.

The warming stripes graphic takes the yearly average temperature departure from normal and visualises it in a stark colour scale running from blue for cooler-than-normal to red for hotter-than-normal. The resulting visualisation shows the global warming signal clear as day. Following in the vein of an earlier visualisation where Hawkins depicted rising temperatures as a colour-changing spiral, it went viral. It also inspired a campaign by TV meteorologists to talk about climate change on the air.

But it also showed the global average temperature, which nobody experiences. The new iteration of warming stripes, however, helps bring things a little closer to home. Using data from Berkeley Earth as well as national meteorological agencies, the new stripes show how much individual countries have warmed. Some individuals countries like the tiny, scattered Cook Islands aren’t included, but most nations on Earth are there.

The resulting graphics illustrate that while there are fluctuations from place to place based on how much they’re influenced by natural climate patterns like, say, El Niño, climate change is slowly overwhelming those signals as it warms the planet. Here’s the annual average temperature departure from 1901-2018 for Australia, Barbados, and Turkmenistan, all of which showcase the planet’s increasingly hot and agitated state:

This 3 year old study by Pat Frank was ignored by climate scientists but is still as damning today as it was then. I have put together the real truthful historical global temperature record(with its error uncertainty ). See last image in tweet. In fact the error bar should be double for the NCAR data but I was kind.

Optical illusion on that graph, Loydo. Spreading out fractions of a degree over a really wide area makes it look worse. And again, we’re still talking averages. Which mean nothing. Except that someone has done the research and verified what Freeman Dyson has said (it’s happening mostly in the winter, mostly in the Arctic, mostly at night) and what I have pointed out (there are two ways the average can go up) and now we know it’s happening from the bottom of the thermometer. It’s not getting hotter; it’s just not getting quite as cold. Makes a huge difference in how the increasing “global mean” should be interpreted.

Another Reuters alarmist twist taken at face value by the In Our Backyard CBC…
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/arctic-permafrost-thawing-early-1.5179760

Nowhere in the article or in the paper, the location of the three (yes only three sites investigated) is replaced within the typical patterns of atmospheric circulation. Hence the article is rife with blatant generalizations such as “”What we saw was amazing,” Vladimir E. Romanovsky, a professor of geophysics at the university, told Reuters by telephone. “It’s an indication that the climate is now warmer than at any time in the last 5,000 or more years.”

Yet, in the paper “3.2 Key drivers of rapid top-down thaw of very cold permafrost From our results, we identify three key factors which are responsible for widespread thaw at each of our study sites: an increase in summer warmth, limited thermal buffering from overlying soil organic layers and vegetation, and near surface massive ice. ”

Summer warmth usually is the result of either prevailing anticyclonic conditions and intense insolation or advections of warm air displaced by intense descents of polar air toward lower latitudes. Yet, this is never discussed. Congratulations!

The Reuters hit piece ends with… a quote from a Greenpeace activist “”Thawing permafrost is one of the tipping points for climate breakdown and it’s happening before our very eyes,” said Jennifer Morgan, executive director of Greenpeace International.
“This premature thawing is another clear signal that we must decarbonize our economies, and immediately.”

So much for reporting about science, hey CBC/Reuters…

Even if the increase in CO2 is 100% man made, there is no problem. If the CO2 increase is only half man made, we have even less of “not have a problem”. Warmer is good, colder is bad. And most of the warming occurs at high latitudes and at night.

You are going to have to clarify what you mean there isn’t really any analysis it’s just a graph which doesn’t really show anything. I see a wiggly red line representing some strange 13 month averaging filter on the blue data, the logic for the choice of 13 months escapes me as it seems to be inducing beat signals. Your selection is no better and that is sort of the point it’s a very noise ridden graph you can make whatever you like from it. However if you actually put error bars on it then basically you probably don’t have anything. Finally it’s an average temperature which has about as much meaning as the average number of kids per family but it seems to float your boat.

All statistical graphs involve a selection process unless you want us to ignore the red line and just talk about the blue data points. Not much to say about the blue points it looks like any noise plot.

My comment (third down) was this:

WXcycles about 18 hours ago
“Weather is not climate. Climate-change is not observed by humans in real-time, nor even within a satellite record. It’s detected only centuries after it’s already taken place and been recorded in the earth’s changing surface phenomena, predominantly sediments, their geomorphology, movements of flora and fauna, and via isotope analysis of marine sediments an ice cores. Models of future states are at best a guess, at worst a belief system.”

June 18, 2019 6:02 pm

I have a Psychology degree, specialising in human vision. Colour vision was one of the topics covered in great detail.

Red is a warning or danger colour for humans. Anything coloured red, looks alarming.

This is the first dishonest thing about warming stripes. Using red to represent warming, makes warming look alarming, even if the temperature increase is only 0.001 of a degree Celsius.

You can test this, by changing the red to another colour. For example, green. The warming stripes no longer look alarming. And instead, look quite relaxing.

Try swapping blue and red. So that blue represents warmer temperatures, and red represents cooler temperatures. Warming stripes suddenly look like we have just changed from alarming to good. Even though the graphic is still showing warming.

From the warming stripes website: https://showyourstripes.info/faq
“For each country, the average temperature in 1971-2000 is set as the boundary between blue and red colours”

This means that all warming stripes will always be mostly blue to the left of 1985, and mostly red to the right of 1985, even if the temperature change is tiny.

From the warming stripes website: https://showyourstripes.info/faq
“the colour scale varies from +/- 2.6 standard deviations of the annual average temperatures between 1901-2000.”

This means that even a tiny change in temperature is displayed as the full range from dark blue to dark red.

This is a dishonest graphic, which makes any amount of warming, ever a trivial amount of warming, look catastrophic.

This is a dishonest graphic, being used by dishonest people.

This (“yearly average temperature departure from normal”) is what caught my eye.

A common misconception is that the average temperature is ‘normal’ and anything outside of this is bad.

Why are they not complaining about the colder temps, only the hotter ones?

Many people die from the cold and more than die from heat according to some studies. E.g.:

The Lancet 2015

A new study published in The Lancet shows 6.5% of deaths in this country are attributed to cold weather, compared with 0.5% from hot weather. Most deaths will be from cardiovascular and respiratory disease, as it’s the heart and lungs that struggle when we are outside our comfort zone.

In Our Backyard: a critical appraisal of CBC’s climate political campaign
Reuters and the CBC continue their misinformation, equating meteorological conditions with climate.
https://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/sled-dogs-melting-ice-1.5181086

On average, the Arctic is warming two to three times faster than the rest of the world with climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports.

Except that in their desire to do so well, the agency and its parrot published a map forecast of the temperature anomalies affecting the northern hemisphere, hoping no one would understand what this map really means.
comment image
Cross referencing this image with satellite animations, it is clear that major polar air descents (negative anomalies) are affecting northern Canada’s arctic islands, the entire east and central north American continent, the British Isles, western Europe and North western Africa (Morocco), central Siberia, China and northern Pacific.
These cold air strong negative anomalies will result in the poleward advections of warmer air (hence warm anomalies in western Greenland) displaced by these powerful polar air masses. This is basic atmospheric circulation, meteorology.

Yet neither Reuters nor their CBC parrot condescend to explain the synoptic situation.
Notwithstanding that these peak conditions are already changing…

Oh, so everybody (other than radical-activist, social-justice warriors) is supposed to know what it means.

“alert to the stupidity in society, especially where climate-change alarmism is concerned”
