Climate Change Generational Suicide: 38% of Millennials Worried About Having Children

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

Ongoing millennial green efforts to ensure theirs is the last generation to worry about climate change.

More than a third of millennials share Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s worry about having kids while the threat of climate change looms

ELIZA RELMAN, WALT HICKEY
MAR 5, 2019, 10:15 AM

“Our planet is going to hit disaster if we don’t turn this ship around … there’s scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult,” Ocasio-Cortez said on Instagram Live. “And even if you don’t have kids, there are still children here in the world, and we have a moral obligation to leave a better world for them.”

An INSIDER poll conducted on SurveyMonkey Audience found that nearly 30% of Americans either strongly agree, agree, or somewhat agree that a couple should consider the negative and potentially life-threatening effects of climate change when deciding whether or not to have children. Just more than 8% of Americans strongly agreed that climate change should be a consideration.

Young people are more likely to consider climate change

Notably, younger people are much more likely to consider the threats of a planet more prone to extreme weather, droughts, floods, and wildfires when deciding whether to have kids.

Nearly 38% of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 agreed that climate change should be a factor in a couple’s decision about whether to have children. And 34% of Americans between the ages of 30 and 44 agreed.

Agreement was also linked to the belief that climate change is man-made: 38% of respondents who said “the earth is getting warmer mostly because of human activity such as burning fossil fuels” said couples should factor in the effect of that warming on their children before having them. Meanwhile, 33% disagreed, and another third were neutral or didn’t know.

Since the best predictor of what children will be like is their parents, by not having children climate worrier green millennials are inexorably ceding the future to climate skeptics, and to people who choose to have large families regardless of their climate concerns.

So — a fairly rapid decrease in the population, which will help with resource allotment, accompanied by a fairly rapid increase in general intelligence.

I would agree except it will apply only to white people as only white folk seem to actually believe all the nonsense.

This gullibility is NOT GENETIC. It is produced by government schools, run by the Taylorian method.

The fix is return to what worked best. The last one-room schoolhouse, Tennessee 1962, produced 80% National Merit scholars.

It also produced wiser and more responsible adults.

Re: David Buckel’s suicide

His suicide note says “”Pollution ravages our planet, oozing inhabitability via air, soil, water and weather. … Most humans on the planet now breathe air made unhealthy by fossil fuels, and many die early deaths as a result.”

The man was 60 years old. He was of the Baby-Boomer generation, not some snowflake millennial. All of his life the trend has been for cleaner air, cleaner water, better use of the land, and more prosperity for more people. Much of the progress BECAUSE of fossil fuel use. Yet he didn’t realize that. How sad.

I guess it true that we live life from the inside out. If you want to see doom and gloom you will, regardless of the actual situation.

As far as magnetosphere weakening fears, that is one that surely needs strong application of the serenity prayer:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

For so unlimited things that nature can throw at us, the things we know might happen (Earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, forest fires, droughts) and for the Black Swans of which we know nothing, a strong, resilient society with the technology and wealth resources to maintain it – that is the best mitigation strategy for public policy.

“38% of respondents who said “the earth is getting warmer mostly because of human activity”
If that’s all you heard from the MSM and were taught in school you might believe it as well.
Sad!
Fortunately, like the pending ice age taught in the 70’s, time will reveal the false prophecies of Global Warming and a new earth-destroying calamity will be introduced.

Reply to  Ron

That 38% would probably have an r^2=0.88 correlation with possessing a Liberal ideology (aka, today’s Democrats). The other 5% is simply the left tail-end of the gullibility distribution.

If the word “mostly” were removed from that statement, then I would agree with it.
But “mostly” is a quantifier, and we simply don’t know that at all, despite IPCC proclamations to the contrary. Show me a climate scientist who says confidently it’s mostly due to human activity, and I’ll show you a rent-seeker.

Unfortunately, with no qualifier, that sentence is perceived as meaning all warming is caused by human activity. There needs to be a reducing qualifier of the sort: Minimal warming caused by human activity, or immeasurable warming caused by human activity.

No need to worry about the magnetosphere. It’s been flipping about every 100K years for at least the last 10 million years or so.
Beyond that, it appears that the field doesn’t drop to zero, then reform with the opposite polarity.
Instead patches of reverse polarity show up (such as the south Atlantic anomaly), the over time grow until the anomalies become the norm.

March 5, 2019 10:25 am

“Agreement was also linked to the belief that climate change is man-made:…”

Well it is.
But then that’s not the issue.
At every turn now in the Climate Hustle need to induce a state of fear in the public, we keep coming back to prescient writings and speakings of a great thinker-intellectual giant of our generation that we lost too soon, Michael Crichton.

His explanation of how institutionalized fear mongering can paralyze is vivid where he describes how people of Urkraine and Belarus are still suffering from the paralyzing effects of the fear mongering from the Chernobyl radiation where they were bombarded with expert claims that they were all going to die horrible early deaths of radiation sickness and their children would all be born with horrifying deformities and syndromes. The fear of the Chernobyl radiation, driven by “experts” opinions and constantly hyped by the media, was magnitudes worse than on the society than any objective radiation exposure.

The generational impact of idiots driving the Climate Change fear mongering are doing far, far more damage to multiple generations than anything a few degrees of mostly beneficial warming could bring. Everything from destroying economic futures (which in itself will bring higher enviromental destruction) to destroying family structures (by not having children to take care of the elderly family members which is foundational to maintaining a cohesive social structure that remembers the mistakes of the past) which are the bedrock of a free, open society.

Every generation worries about something that prior generations didn’t. When I was a kid we were raised to fear anihilation by the Soviets in nuclear war, including the infamous “duck and cover” exercises in schoolrooms and Hollywood doomsday films and such. It didn’t stop us from screwing around, or having babies. My parents generation grew up in the Great Depression, where unemployment was upwards of 25% or more, and came to adulthood and parenthood in the midst of the bloodiest war in history … it didn’t sto them from making our generation. My grandparent’s generation grew up to adulthood and raising families in the midst of the War to End All Wars .. they still made my parent’s generation.

Meh .. kids can be scared of stuff that is real, or of stuff that isn’t real. Reproduction keeps going on, either way.

In fact, the biggest factor in reducing human population growth and family size is economic wealth .. the more people have, the fewer kids they have.

Propaganda-a big lie repeated frequently until people come to believe it. Also known as brainwashing.
Perhaps it is a natural selection criterion- those that are so gullible will not reproduce because they have swallowed flagrant lies, so the subspecies of Homo Gullibilis becomes extinct due to not bothering to reproduce.
Alas, the flood of replacement humans could in all likelihood try to make the not so gullible extinct, which weakens the gene pool.
Just look at the Nazi criteria for natural selection-worked for a while- blonde, blue eyed Arayans were the favoured species. They attempted to make other sub species of humans extinct- ones they claimed were sub human (including my own sub-species.)
Note-as it is voluntary extinction, I do not have too much of a problem, as long as the imbeciles do not try to force their insanity upon me.

The correct response to a forthcoming apocalypse is to have as many children as possible. That would increase the chances of the human race surviving the disaster. In times of war people have more babies because it increases the chances of survival when so many are dying.

March 5, 2019 4:00 pm

Back in the 1960s, I heard quite a few people state that they were never having kids because of looming world disasters.
Rationales included:
* finite resources,
* population bomb,
* their children fighting in unjust wars,
* everlasting poverty in both the first and third worlds,
* pollution,
* poisoned water,
* mistreated animals,
* unnatural plants being farmed and fed to people and animals, (this is well before GMO, when “nature’s children” did not comprehend farming, fertilizer, harvests, animal slaughter, etc.
* more and more expensive educations required with many graduates getting menial jobs,
* certain nuclear war,
* an Earth poisoned by nuclear wastes,
* etc., etc., etc.

Every one of them that I have met since that time, well except for a few who turned out sterile, have children.
Of the sterile, or barren if you prefer, every one of them tried for children. Many adopted, fostered or sought professional medical interventions.

“… and we have a moral obligation to leave a better world for them.”

Leave a better world…

Okay, just to make the maths easy, let us assume our little moral snowflakes are 30 years old.

Let us assume they then have a kiddling or two and stick with that 30 year age gap.

So, when our snow flakes finally make it to that big Safe Space in the sky at age 90, the kids first mentioned by AOC will be about 60.

“Dad! When can I have the keys to the planet? Dad you promised!”

“Not until you are 60, Son.”

So not only are we talking about 60 years into the future, we are also assuming that these new 60 year old owners of the planet will have spent their 40 odd adult years doing sweet sod all about their own destiny.

Sorry, AOC, but anyone truly stupid enough not to understand the logic of these ‘leave a better planet’ moral guilt trips probably should be encourage not to breed for the good of the overall gene pool.

I find this fear of ‘putting children into this world’ an obscene ignorance of the many greater threats and challenges humans have had throughout history and before. So, children of the modern developed world face a low risk of the following:
– high infant mortaility rates
– life expectance of >50 years
– being consripted into war like WW1 or WW2
– The Plague, Black Death, et
– Death in child birth
– Painfull incurable toothache

These and many more were high risks faced by those of our past, and still millions in the developing world. Well, at least in the past, they didn’t have global warming to worry about!

Most of the remaining 80% want electricity and want babies. All so pointless isn’t it?

Those of us who have lived longer remember the same “fear to have children” during the Arms Race when there was a real possibility that there would be a nuclear war. Some (many?) skipped having children due to that fear.

The current “concern” about Climate Change regarding children is often that other people should not have kids or they use of “fears of climate change” as an excuse for their not wanting to have kids (for entirely different reasons).

Dylan wrote a song on this theme –Masters of War:

You’ve thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain’t worth the blood
That runs in your veins

I would cast the same judgement on those terrorizing the gullible with horror stories about climate.
