German Chancellor Angela Merkel has appeared to voice support for German students abandoning their lessons and attending climate change demonstrations.

Climate change: Angela Merkel welcomes school strikes

2 March 2019

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she supports school students’ protests about climate change.

It appears to contradict some education officials, who have criticised participants for skipping school and threatened them with exclusion.

What did Merkel say?

In a video released on her official website, Angela Merkel said protecting the climate was a “challenge that people can only tackle together” (in German).

Asked about the Friday school strikes, which in Germany have been dubbed “Fridays for Future”, Ms Merkel said the country’s climate goals could only be reached with the support of wider society.

“So I very much welcome that young people, school students, demonstrate and tell us to do something fast about climate change,” she said.

“I think it is a very good initiative,” she added, without making reference to the fact that they were protesting during school hours.

There is a method to Angela and all these politicians madness. These Students will be out demonstrating and advocating for more power to their government leaders in order to control the citizenry for the purpose of saving them from hobgoblins. As a side benefit, skipping school only serves to dumb them down further so they become easier dupes for the Government to control. Win Win.

It has nothing to do with climate change, but everything to do with the cost of energy and economic competitiveness. Push the climate change, anti carbon dioxide theme to make everyone use expensive alternatives, thus leveling the playing field, and taking away the comparative advantages of, say the US, with their abundant and cheap fossil fuels.

Agreed. I suspect that quite a few people in Germany and elsewhere were sold the idea because they were convinced that everybody will have to go down the same route of windmills and solar panels. So the country that does it first will have the advantage as their industries clean up producing and supplying the green technologies before competitors.

We’ve seen other examples of “crony-capitalism” at work when companies like Philips are quite happy to see traditional incandescent light bulbs banned in the EU, allowing them to sell expensive replacement technologies into the mandated marketplace. The EU is now enforcing a reduction in the maximum power of the electric motors in vacuum cleaners (Yes. Really.), to save the planet or something. It probably also conveniently puts the cheep-and-cheerful Chinese products at a relative disadvantage.

The green horse is being ridden hard by many corporations in Europe, aided and abetted by some shameless politicians with their snouts in th trough.

The EU has already restricted vacuum cleaners to 900W most were previously 1900-2100W so its going to take a lot longer to clean up and the saving will be largely consumed by the extra effort & time – idiotic. Expect similar idiocy with kettles, stoves, hot water heaters etc. I predict a future criminal black-market supply of powerful domestic appliances – followed by the “appliance police” WTF are we thinking ?
You may have noticed that manufacturers such as Karcher & Nilfisk now have a range of “industrial” vacuum cleaners being sold through retail outlets to the general public – clearly intended to work around these restrictions – so what will the lawmakers response be ? Outlaw the use of “industrial” equipment at home – the appliance police ? Maybe you should go to prison for it hmmm……..
The EU yanked its proposed legislation on toasters and kettles prior to the Brexit referendum but I’m guessing it will go back – a 500W kettle takes twice as long as a 1000W kettle to boil a given quantity of water – the power used remains exactly the same (in fact the losses over the longer warming period make it less efficient – the whole idea is nonsense.)
There is a ton of similar idiotic legislation in the pipeline for washing machines, dishwashers, electric motors.
All dreamed up by bureaucrats who haven’t a clue how things work.

You’ll probably find there’s as EU accountant somewhere in Brussels who has done his spreadsheet and figured that if every electrical appliance draws less power then yes……we can power the world with wind turbines.

Unfortunately he’s no concept of engineering, nor real life, and fails to account for the fact that if something takes twice as long to do a given task, it still has to accomplish that task so will use at least as much power.

Or maybe I’m missing something and wind turbines are the answer……….~ahem~

There is a sensible side to reducing power consumption by promoting increased efficiency as when added up small improvements can save the expense of building a whole power station but then that could be a purely accidental outcome. The UK plans for the future assume wholly unrealistic increases in efficiency – head of which is the use of dumb ‘smart’ meters – that reduce demand and reduce the cost to households. The costs are rising so fast that the mythical efficiency savings would get nowhere near them.

They are debating reducing the maximum power of kettles. That tells you that they do not understand science.

No energy is saved in using a 1500 watt kettle rather than a 3000 watt kettle.

One merely uses half the power for twice as long to boil a litre of water. Overall no energy saved, no reduction in CO2.

If they wanted to save energy perhaps reducing the volume of the kettle would be a more productive policy.

We are governed by incompetents.

This is exACTLY the same thing as restricting the wattage of incandescent light bulbs.
People who want the ‘warm’ color of glowing tungsten merely put in double the number of light sockets. For those that don’t, and switch over to LED lighting instead, the furnace in the house has then to make up the lost heat.

“the furnace in the house has then to make up the lost heat.”

Those who use air conditioning pay to get rid of the heat generated by incandescents. And I am pretty sure my heat pump is a more efficient “furnace” than incandescent. I’ll defer to anyone who can quantify the difference but it appears that incandescents generate waste heat.

I saw 60 Minutes yesterday and they had a piece on “children” who were suing the U.S. government because they think burning fossil fuels is going to destroy the world by making too much CO2.

The woman who organized the children (I don’t recall her name) was interviewed, and was very confident they would win their lawsuit, and was just beaming with virtue, and she said something I thought was interesting, she said once the arguments take place in court that “alternate facts are perjury”, insinuating that skeptics questions about CAGW were alternate facts and would be illegal to utter in a courtroom.

Of course, she is wrong, but I wouldn’t want to be the one to try and tell her that. Her bubble seems very strong and would take some effort to burst. A True Believer, in other words.

Perhaps Herr Merkel could explain exactly to which ‘climate’ she refers, and which she thinks has “changed” and how. Determining change requires a metric or at least a classification.
Germany has five climate classifications that have not changed since the 19th century.
They are cfa, cfb, dfb, dfc, and ET.
Perhaps at the same time she could explain how she differentiates her anus and her elbow, quantify those differences, and then discuss the changes that have taken place in recent decades.

Because they’re not her fellow Germans. She was raised a communist in East Germany, and many people have claimed she was Stasi.

I’d guess she’s probably spent her entire life working for the USSR to destroy the West, as so many Western leftists have. The USSR just had the bad manners to collapse decades ago, so they’re not around to roll in and ‘save’ Germany when the culture and economy collapses.

Mark, it is worth mentioning that the former East Germans are the soil in which the AfD (Alternative for Deutschland) has gained most of its support. The coddled western Germans are the ones who have brought into the fantasies of Merkel and co, just as it is in eastern Europe that more down to earth practical ideas now find their popularity. Former communists understand what can happen, those without that experience still think socialism can deliver.

hunter,
The Bundesrepublik (Federal Republic) was formed in 1949 from states (Bundesländer) that had been part of the Reich which was ruled by the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP) or National Socialist German Workers Party, the Nazis. So about 50 million people who lived under the Nazi regime for 12 years formed “W Germany”.

The Berlin wall fell in 1989 allowing for migration west, and the eastern Länder were formally reunified into the Federal Republic in 1990. At that point about 16 million people who lived under the SED (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands/Socialist Unity Party of Germany) regime of the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (German Democratic Republic) for 40 years, entered into the Federal Republic.

I would think that the logic is very obvious. Why would it be that the victims and collaborators of Erich Honecker be less able to form democratic governments in 1990 than the victims and collaborators of Adolf Hitler in 1949? You may want to claim that 67 years of totalitarianism is worse than 12 years. On the other hand, “Experience keeps a dear school, but fools will learn in no other.”

Merkel is basically an opportunist. She has no politics of her own. All she ever does is wait for what the press push as politically correct, and then hold a press conference declaring that has been her policy all along. That’s why she does so many U-turns, because when the media change their opinion, so does she. And that’s also why she spends so much time doing nothing and remaining silent between her statements. During the waits, she’s busy analysing what the media want. So if you want to know why Merkel says what she says, look at the German media “elite”, what they’re saying and why they do it. Then you know.

If fossil fuels were banned every tree in the world would be cut down for fuel for cooking and heating. You would bring about mass death.” And then replying to another person posting on Ocasio-Cortez’s Twitter page, he wrote:
“You are delusional if you think fossil fuels will end any time soon, maybe in 500 yrs. AOC’s attitude is unjustifiably condescending. She is a neophyte pretending to be wise. Her kind bring ruination if allowed to be ‘in charge.’ (from the cheap seats).”
On Feb. 19, Moore wrote, including graphics to prove his point:
“AOC’s Green New Deal calls for: ‘(J) removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.’ Technically (scientifically) this would mean removing all H2O vapour and all CO2 which would mean the eradication of all life on Earth. Brilliant.”

Still, Nordstream 2, vitally important for Germany, continues despite massive unrelenting geopolitical pressure. Who said it was ever easy to be a Chancellor in Berlin?

Let’s see, there must an organization which the wise Future Leaders can join.
The last time a German leader wanted to make sure the children were heard, the organization had a catchy name.
And kids in that organization were very involved in good eco-friendly activities, too!
So Chancellor Merkel is just channeling that certain historical figure she obviously admires so greatly.
She should call her new game, “Merkel Youth”.
I wonder if she has designed their uniforms yet?

‘German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she supports school students’ protests about climate change.’

It would be nice if they would define it before protesting it.

Berlin must be askance – a teen mob at the city gates led by a Swedish Green Teen Queen Bee and a NY neophyte!

This is very embarrassing – it could upset the Great Decarbon Transformation Plan when public mirth breaks out!
Damage control will be excruciatingly complicated. Feinstein had it easy!

Very strange flip flop she is doing…

February 16, at this meeting, Merkel told that it very well could be, that foreign powers were behind those demonstrations…

Europe is falling apart again, the USA will have to put it back together one day.

Hmmmm…
Maybe not.
The EU is corrupt across nearly the entire continent.
Maybe time to focus on helping Africa and S America.
Europe is shot, worn out, useless.

Hopefully the young surgeon who will have to operate on her in 15 years will tell her before the surgery that she took part in the strikes and missed that practicum…

“AOC telling youth to have no children”.
It’s OK the Germans have already walked the walk on that one.

The German demographic curve is so disastrous already for decades, it’s why they have to import millions of foreigners to fill that gap.

You only have to go out at a spring weekend in Germany to see 1000s of grey haired old fogeys driving around in cabriolets with equally grey haired old women, usually with no or very few children or grandchildren to mess with their luxury lifestyle.

The immigrants can’t afford them, they are working their nuts off all hours for as low as 1EURO per hour.
The whole current German construct is just grotesque.
