Industry advocates, however, support the watered-down aims of the panel and defend the campaign and pocketbook ties its nine Democratic members have to fossil fuel companies (Greenwire, Feb. 7).

Many of the committee members — including Chairwoman Kathy Castor (D-Fla.), Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.) — also have investments in fossil fuel assets, E&E News found during a review of their financial disclosures.

So far, just 41 of the House’s 435 members have pledged “to not take contributions from the oil, gas, and coal industry and instead prioritize the health of our families, climate, and democracy over fossil fuel industry profits.” No Republicans have made that commitment (E&E Daily, Jan. 30).
The only current pledge-taker on the climate crisis committee is Rep. Mike Levin, a freshman Democrat from California.

I actually feel a little sorry for Democrat voters. Stuffing a committee called the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis with people who invest in fossil fuels is probably not what Democrat voters expected.
I don’t agree with the Democrat public position on climate change, I think genuine action to shut down fossil fuel would be terrible for the US economy, which is currently booming thanks to the flood of cheap energy unleashed by President Trump and the previous Republican Congress and current Republican dominated Senate.
But promising action then letting voters down can undermine Democracy. If voters feel betrayed by their elected representatives, sometimes they turn to political extremists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Democrat voters in Alexandria’s district might not agree with a lot of what she stands for, but in a horrible way her extremism is a form of political integrity; she probably intends to do exactly what she promised to do.
Maybe the members of the committee have had a change of heart, and all intend to crack down on their former fossil fuel industry friends. But if I was a climate concerned Democrat voter, right now I would be feeling very let down by the party to whom I entrusted my vote.

What you are watching is kabuki theater Geoff. What is going on in the back rooms of power is way more complicated. Just suffice to say that politicians are puppets on strings for the wealth holders who get “their people” placed into the bureaucratic positions of power. The Bureaucracy is where the permanent power positions rest and the bureaucrats do the bidding of those who get them appointed.
The politicians are simply bad actors who read their scripts off teleprompters and sound like complete buffoons when they occasionally go off script. Or should I say Ocasio-lly go off script.
As for AOC, whether she is a paid actor or an accident, which occasionally happens at the district level, most of the political rhetoric is directed by the Primary Media outlets as a distraction for the voters who are too busy dealing with the day to day issues of their own life to pay close enough attention to the misdirection playing out in the background. The specific intent of this magic puppet show is to pit citizens against each other politically, over mostly non-issues, so that the wealth holders can maintain their absolute hold on the reins of power.

It’s already been done, but I don’t have a link to it off-hand. Has more to do with demographics, statistics, and the few number of people who voted in her district.
Of course, then again, that only explains why/how she got elected, it does not answer your original question of how she gained such a position of influence. Unfortunately, although I still love my country and hope for better, I think your question should be rephrased as, “the once- mighty U S of A?” At least if we keep going in the direction we seem to be heading.

…and even the WSJ gets it wrong (I think). if one assumes a population of ~700,000 for the district, the total vote count was 141,122, or 15.76% of the population, not outstanding. However, she won the total vote count by 30,804 votes, or 22% of the vote cast, but only 4.4% of the total voters in the district (g*d, political statistics make my head hurt).
Here’s something we need to remind ourselves of: Anyone who gave DJT a hall pass for all of his past iniquities, and voted for him anyway, no longer gets to bitch or preach to anyone, about a politician’s behavior anymore. By embracing one of history’s biggest liars, cheaters and grifters they automatically waived their right to be offended or outraged by other’s behavior.
It is not hypocrites on the Select Committee, it is elitists. It is the lumpenproletariat who should take public transit and live in 500 sq ft warrens.

It is even clearer than that, for the USA and for the world:
Fossil fuels comprise fully 85% of global primary energy, unchanged in decades, and unlikely to change in future decades. Ban fossil fuels and ~everyone in the developed world is dead in a month. The remaining 15% of global primary energy is almost all hydro and nuclear.
Despite many trillions in squandered subsidies, global green energy has increased from above 1% to below 2% is recent decades.
My concern, as an energy expert, is that intermittent energy from wind and/or solar power cannot supply the grid with reliable, uninterrupted power. These so-called green energy technologies are not green and produce little useful (dispatchable) energy, because they require almost 100% conventional backup from fossil fuels, nuclear or hydro for periods when the wind does not blow and the Sun does not shine.
Green energy does not even reduce CO2 emissions, because of the need for almost 100% conventional spinning reserve. There is no current grid-scale “super-battery” technology that can economically solve the intermittency problem, except for Pumped Storage that requires special siting that exists in only a few places in the world. My home province of Alberta covers 662,000 sq. km in area, larger than many countries, and we have exactly ZERO sites suitable for pumped storage – we have no sites suitable for hydro dams with a large reservoir at the bottom of the dam.
So here is my “expert solution to solve the problems of intermittency in wind and solar power:
1. Build your wind or solar power system and connect it to the grid.
2. Build your back-up system consisting of 100% equivalent capacity in gas turbine generators.
3. Using high explosives, blow your wind or solar power system all to hell.
4. Run your back-up gas turbine generators 24/7.
5. To save even more money, skip steps 1 and 3. 🙂
A final note of humour – the extremists are now claiming that this numbing cold spell is caused by global warming – yes, really! But none of the global warming alarmists predicted this cold. They said “kids would not know what snow looked like anymore” and other such nonsense.
In 2002 I predicted a return to global cooling, such as was experienced from ~1940 to 1977, to recommence by 2020 to 2030. Solar activity in SC24 has crashed – it is the lowest solar cycle since the Dalton Minimum circa 1800, when much of Napoléon’s Grande Armée of 680.000 men froze to death in the Russian campaign.
Try to stay warm during this current cold blast from the North. Cold kills, and cold weather kills 20 times more people globally than hot and warm weather. Excess Winter Deaths in the USA average about 100,000 per year – equivalent to two 9-11’s per week for 17 weeks every year. Remember that when someone tells you “we’re all going to die from global warming”. Earth is cooler-than optimum for humanity and the environment.

Makes sense. Regulations, taxes and subsidies increase the prices of hydrocarbons making them more profitable. They will rise up to the second lowest competing level. At the same time destroy competition: coal, nuclear power and fracking.
Ruling class decides which businesses live or die, not the customers through a market. Donations to politicians make them successful in elections. Business is subsidized and protected from competition. Clear win-win – for the ruling class not for voters.
Ask a Green that if they are truly worried about the effects of CO2, why they do not insist 0n Nuclear Power. The answer of course will be the so called danger of radio active waste.
The real reason, and the reason why they are also against Hydro, the greenest form of energy generation, is that they want to close down all modern energy. Then they will offer you their version of a “Brave New World”.

I would commend the paper by David Legates which is concerned about real science and not feelings.
It’s just hard not to invest in fossil fuels when those companies are offering 10+ percentage on divies.
Most of these companies aren’t offering 10+ percent dividend yields. Sunoco is, but they’re an exception. Exxon’s dividend yield around 4% is more typical, and even that is above average for stocks in general.

BTW, Rep. Ocasio is not on this committee. She held a public CAGW protest at Pelosi’s office when she first went to Capital Hill, and Nancy then says, “No, committee assignment for you!”

Speaker Pelosi’s staffing of the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis with representatives with a conflict of interest on this subject is Congressional Business as Usual.
It is interesting that the Speaker has come down on the side of Business as Usual by shutting a certain first-term member of Congress out.
You could say this is hypocrisy, but what would you rather have, Speaker Pelosi’s good honest insincerity or Member Ocasio-Cortez’ earnestness of this important matter. Given we have a two-party system and the House of Representatives has switched parties, I much prefer good honest insincerity.
But the next time it is brought up that members of the minority party in the House of Representatives don’t “believe” in the seriousness of Climate Change, it appears that members of the majority party don’t much believe in it either.

We need to encourage all of our green friends to vote for the Green party, since the Democrat party has no intention of doing anything real regarding climate change.
We can also point out to them how effective the green/socialist parties have been in Europe.

My guess why the photos is because the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis is Democrat-dominated, Pelosi is a Democrat and Speaker of the Democrat-dominated House, while Ocasio-Cortez, also Democrat, is the House sponsor of the Green New Deal bill. So, you’ve got a Democrat house speaker for a Democrat-dominated House and a House sponsor of the Green New Deal as poster children for a Democrat-dominated House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.
What better figure heads could there be? (^_^)
This is nothing new, Democrats have always been invested in fossil fuel and always will be. Pointing out to their voters that they are simply makes Democrat Party voters angry at you for “lying” about Democrat Party politicians, the truth never intrudes on their “reality”.
Perhaps the “Select Committee on the Climate Crisis” would be better suited with a different name, like “Committee on the Climate Crisis Policies”, or CCCP 🙂

One would think Hillary want to be’s would have learned what happens when you threaten workers .
