E&E: Democrat Climate Change Committee Members Own Shares in Fossil Fuel Companies

Left Official Portrait of Nancy Pelosi. Right Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. By El Borde, CC BY 3.0, Link

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

According to E&E News, most of the members of the new Democrat dominated House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis are either invested in or take donations from fossil fuel companies.

Select committee Dems still rely on fossil fuels

Corbin Hiar, E&E News reporter
Published: Friday, February 8, 2019

The panel that House Democrats created to combat global warming is called the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, but the fossil fuel connections of the members named yesterday suggest to some environmentalists a certain lack of urgency.

Industry advocates, however, support the watered-down aims of the panel and defend the campaign and pocketbook ties its nine Democratic members have to fossil fuel companies (Greenwire, Feb. 7).

Many of the committee members — including Chairwoman Kathy Castor (D-Fla.), Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.) — also have investments in fossil fuel assets, E&E News found during a review of their financial disclosures.

So far, just 41 of the House’s 435 members have pledged “to not take contributions from the oil, gas, and coal industry and instead prioritize the health of our families, climate, and democracy over fossil fuel industry profits.” No Republicans have made that commitment (E&E Daily, Jan. 30).

The only current pledge-taker on the climate crisis committee is Rep. Mike Levin, a freshman Democrat from California.

I actually feel a little sorry for Democrat voters. Stuffing a committee called the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis with people who invest in fossil fuels is probably not what Democrat voters expected.

I don’t agree with the Democrat public position on climate change, I think genuine action to shut down fossil fuel would be terrible for the US economy, which is currently booming thanks to the flood of cheap energy unleashed by President Trump and the previous Republican Congress and current Republican dominated Senate.

But promising action then letting voters down can undermine Democracy. If voters feel betrayed by their elected representatives, sometimes they turn to political extremists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Democrat voters in Alexandria’s district might not agree with a lot of what she stands for, but in a horrible way her extremism is a form of political integrity; she probably intends to do exactly what she promised to do.

Maybe the members of the committee have had a change of heart, and all intend to crack down on their former fossil fuel industry friends. But if I was a climate concerned Democrat voter, right now I would be feeling very let down by the party to whom I entrusted my vote.

Who volunteers to analyze, then post here, the manner in which this inexperienced, socialist/communist girl has gained a position of influence in the mighty U S of A?
We in friendly countries might think it quite unlike the ways that the US has mostly gone about showing better ways to the world.
Is there some quick, simple explanation like widespread effects of hard drugs on reporters, or is it more complicated? Geoff

Regarding Occasional Cortex:
She is from a place which is economically disadvantaged, and yet she is working hard to prevent Amazon from opening a headquarters there, which will bring an immediate 25,000 high paying jobs to the area.
If you work for Amazon there or not, having many billions of dollars pouring into an area will be a huge economic boom.
But she wants to prevent it, and may well succeed.
All ostensibly because they will be given economic inducements to get them to pick that place.
She is working against the economic interests of her constituents, in order to virtue signal her hate of large corporations and their money.
Meanwhile, in other news, she just sold the documentary rights to her election campaign to Netflix for $10 million.
So she only wants to keep other people from getting a huge economic boost…not herself.

Correct. AOC essentially represents Jerry, Elaine, George, Kramer, and the Soup Nazi (Seinfeld characters). This is not a typical congressional district.

She’s twelve years old (or something), and she’s Hispanic, and well, Trump! Crowley’s an old white guy. I know, right? Of course they had to vote for her.

Here is how modern politics works:

The far-left is winning, especially in the developing world, where over 100 countries are pseudo-Marxist dictatorships, based on their leftist phony rhetoric, but are actually just military dictatorships, run for the ruling elite and their armed thugs – see Zimbabwe and Venezuela… and North Korea, Cuba, the Soviet Union countries and many more..

The left gains political power by promising imbeciles lots of free stuff. Then they destroy the economy, create widespread poverty and live like kings atop a ruined state – because you can’t be kings without lots of peasants.

It is really no different in the developed world. Get elected by lazy greedy imbeciles, destroy the economy with fake green energy and other crazy policies, and live like kings on top of a ruined economy, looking down on all the peasants.

What you are watching is kabuki theater Geoff. What is going on in the back rooms of power is way more complicated. Just suffice to say that politicians are puppets on strings for the wealth holders who get “their people” placed into the bureaucratic positions of power. The Bureaucracy is where the permanent power positions rest and the bureaucrats do the bidding of those who get them appointed.
The politicians are simply bad actors who read their scripts off teleprompters and sound like complete buffoons when they occasionally go off script. Or should I say Ocasio-lly go off script.
As for AOC, whether she is a paid actor or an accident, which occasionally happens at the district level, most of the political rhetoric is directed by the Primary Media outlets as a distraction for the voters who are too busy dealing with the day to day issues of their own life to pay close enough attention to the misdirection playing out in the background. The specific intent of this magic puppet show is to pit citizens against each other politically, over mostly non-issues, so that the wealth holders can maintain their absolute hold on the reins of power.

Geoff,

It’s already been done, but I don’t have a link to it off-hand. Has more to do with demographics, statistics, and the few number of people who voted in her district.

Of course, then again, that only explains why/how she got elected, it does not answer your original question of how she gained such a position of influence. Unfortunately, although I still love my country and hope for better, I think your question should be rephrased as, “the once- mighty U S of A?” At least if we keep going in the direction we seem to be heading.

Geoff,

From the Wall Street Journal. The rest of it is paywalled.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/impressive-but-ms-ocasio-cortez-got-very-few-votes-1532444133

Roger Kelly’s July 21 letter responding to Sen. Joe Lieberman’s July 18 op-ed (“Vote Joe Crowley, for Working Families”) about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is misguided. She won in Congressional District 14 of New York with only about 16,000 votes. The total population of District 14 is just under 700,000, which means that only a bit more than 2% of the district’s population voted for her.

By the way, almost half of the population in the district is Hispanic.

Phil R
Reply to  Phil R

…and even the WSJ gets it wrong (I think). if one assumes a population of ~700,000 for the district, the total vote count was 141,122, or 15.76% of the population, not outstanding. However, she won the total vote count by 30,804 votes, or 22% of the vote cast, but only 4.4% of the total voters in the district (g*d, political statistics make my head hurt).

“Thousands of schoolchildren are expected to absent themselves from school on Friday to take part in a series of coordinated protests drawing attention to climate change”

What’s the matter? Are the schoolchildren dissatisfied with the speed with which their politicians are destroying the UK over CO2?

The schoolchildren just need to have a little patience and if the UK keeps going down the path current politicians have set for them on then the UK should be right down there with South Australia in the amount of economic destruction that delusions of CAGW have caused.

The schoolchildren should get real. Well, maybe that’s a little too much to ask considering their age, but their adult handlers and propagandists should get real and if they want to reduce CO2 in the UK, they should demand the UK install new nuclear reactors. If they want to lower CO2 they should march on the Chinese and Indian embassies and demand they also switch to nuclear power.

Poor things. The “adults” are scaring them to death. It’s child abuse. it’s Truth abuse.

There are a lot of delusional people wandering around this Earth. Let’s hope the rational people outnumber them. Currently, the jury is still out, although there do appear to be glints of hope on the horizon.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be “cured” against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

Said it before, will say it again. watch the video of when AOC finds out she was elected… she never imagined she would win, and her look says it all “holy s*** what do I do know?”

Given how she handles debate, actual debate, and challenges to her ideas and claims, it is clear she is highly neurotic. The more you challenge her ideas the more unstable she becomes.

Ben Shapiro offered her 10k to debate, and she essentially made out it was a kind of harrassment, because she knew, and everyone who advises her knew, a debate with Shapiro on her ideas would have meant her complete destruction.

Neurotic people become agitated and unstable the more you press them on their ideas and claims they cannot defend, see Sarah Myhre and her response to Cliff Mass on fires, and her responses to people in twitter, that is neurotic behavior 101.

Crazy eyes Cortez, is highly neurotic.

Neuroticism is a progressive liberal pathogen. Why? Well their ideas more often than not have no logical foundation or framework, and are based on faux morals and measured by the socialist utopian yardstick. As such, a challenge to this brings unstable limbic responses.

Progressive liberalism is a kind of mental illness today, a kind of mass neuroticism, which manifested mainstream during the election of Trump.

When you make a solid logical factual case and the response you get is “alt right” or “fascist” or “fossil fuel shill” << those are clear examples of neurotic behavior, and that is all too common with progressive liberals.

NYT and HuffPo, Guardian, WAPO have many highly neurotic journalists writing for them, one only needs to read what they publish to see that

Excerpt from the article:
“I don’t agree with the Democrat public position on climate change, I think genuine action to shut down fossil fuel would be terrible for the US economy, which is currently booming thanks to the flood of cheap energy unleashed by President Trump and the previous Republican Congress and current Republican dominated Senate.”

It is even clearer than that, for the USA and for the world:

Fossil fuels comprise fully 85% of global primary energy, unchanged in decades, and unlikely to change in future decades. Ban fossil fuels and ~everyone in the developed world is dead in a month. The remaining 15% of global primary energy is almost all hydro and nuclear.

Despite many trillions in squandered subsidies, global green energy has increased from above 1% to below 2% is recent decades.

My concern, as an energy expert, is that intermittent energy from wind and/or solar power cannot supply the grid with reliable, uninterrupted power. These so-called green energy technologies are not green and produce little useful (dispatchable) energy, because they require almost 100% conventional backup from fossil fuels, nuclear or hydro for periods when the wind does not blow and the Sun does not shine.

Green energy does not even reduce CO2 emissions, because of the need for almost 100% conventional spinning reserve. There is no current grid-scale “super-battery” technology that can economically solve the intermittency problem, except for Pumped Storage that requires special siting that exists in only a few places in the world. My home province of Alberta covers 662,000 sq. km in area, larger than many countries, and we have exactly ZERO sites suitable for pumped storage – we have no sites suitable for hydro dams with a large reservoir at the bottom of the dam.

So here is my “expert solution to solve the problems of intermittency in wind and solar power:

1. Build your wind or solar power system and connect it to the grid.
2. Build your back-up system consisting of 100% equivalent capacity in gas turbine generators.
3. Using high explosives, blow your wind or solar power system all to hell.
4. Run your back-up gas turbine generators 24/7.
5. To save even more money, skip steps 1 and 3. 🙂

A final note of humour – the extremists are now claiming that this numbing cold spell is caused by global warming – yes, really! But none of the global warming alarmists predicted this cold. They said “kids would not know what snow looked like anymore” and other such nonsense.

In 2002 I predicted a return to global cooling, such as was experienced from ~1940 to 1977, to recommence by 2020 to 2030. Solar activity in SC24 has crashed – it is the lowest solar cycle since the Dalton Minimum circa 1800, when much of Napoléon’s Grande Armée of 680.000 men froze to death in the Russian campaign.

Try to stay warm during this current cold blast from the North. Cold kills, and cold weather kills 20 times more people globally than hot and warm weather. Excess Winter Deaths in the USA average about 100,000 per year – equivalent to two 9-11’s per week for 17 weeks every year. Remember that when someone tells you “we’re all going to die from global warming”. Earth is cooler-than optimum for humanity and the environment.

February 10, 2019 5:22 am

Makes sense. Regulations, taxes and subsidies increase the prices of hydrocarbons making them more profitable. They will rise up to the second lowest competing level. At the same time destroy competition: coal, nuclear power and fracking.

Ruling class decides which businesses live or die, not the customers through a market. Donations to politicians make them successful in elections. Business is subsidized and protected from competition. Clear win-win – for the ruling class not for voters.

February 10, 2019 5:35 am

Ask a Green that if they are truly worried about the effects of CO2, why they do not insist 0n Nuclear Power. The answer of course will be the so called danger of radio active waste.

The real reason, and the reason why they are also against Hydro, the greenest form of energy generation, is that they want to close down all modern energy. Then they will offer you their version of a “Brave New World”.

More than half of this climate committee are lawyers. There is not even one who has a background in the most important sciences involved in climate studies. The critique of Dorothy Sayers of the situation in England in 1947 applies here: “the most irrelevant people are appointed to highly-technical ministries.”

The flawed reasoning and twisted logic of a couple of this committee was on full display at the “Healthy Oceans and Healthy Economies” hearing yesterday – as was that of the five women who were Democrat witnesses.

I would commend the paper by David Legates which is concerned about real science and not feelings.

It’s just hard not to invest in fossil fuels when those companies are offering 10+ percentage on divies.

Most of these companies aren’t offering 10+ percent dividend yields. Sunoco is, but they’re an exception. Exxon’s dividend yield around 4% is more typical, and even that is above average for stocks in general.

“Stuffing a committee called the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis with people who invest in fossil fuels is probably not what Democrat voters expected.”

This just goes to show how unserious this issue really is to House Democrats. They don’t fear they are going to be destroyed in 12 years by CO2. If they did, they would be doing things differently.

CAGW is pure political theater. It’s a scheme to gain political power.

BTW, Rep. Ocasio is not on this committee. She held a public CAGW protest at Pelosi’s office when she first went to Capital Hill, and Nancy then says, “No, committee assignment for you!”

That’s how it works in DC, Rep. Ocasio.

The Green New Deal is pretty much what one needs to do if one takes seriously the claims about CAGW and Tipping Points and so on.

Speaker Pelosi’s staffing of the Select Committee on the Climate Crisis with representatives with a conflict of interest on this subject is Congressional Business as Usual.

It is interesting that the Speaker has come down on the side of Business as Usual by shutting a certain first-term member of Congress out.

You could say this is hypocrisy, but what would you rather have, Speaker Pelosi’s good honest insincerity or Member Ocasio-Cortez’ earnestness of this important matter. Given we have a two-party system and the House of Representatives has switched parties, I much prefer good honest insincerity.

But the next time it is brought up that members of the minority party in the House of Representatives don’t “believe” in the seriousness of Climate Change, it appears that members of the majority party don’t much believe in it either.

“…I think genuine action to shut down fossil fuel would be terrible for the US economy…”

It would destroy it.

I feel sorry for the person who jams a fork into an electrical outlet, but only the first time.

AOC is a young, sexy version of Maxine Waters.

AOC has held her seat for a period of days and is already a multi-millionaire; nice system those Dems have! Is she going to share 70% of those riches with the tax-payer? I am not willing to work; please give me a living stipend.

Cheers,

It’s called “diversification” and proves that the people they hired aren’t retarded.

We need to encourage all of our green friends to vote for the Green party, since the Democrat party has no intention of doing anything real regarding climate change.

We can also point out to them how effective the green/socialist parties have been in Europe.
(Make sure not to mention to them the difference between our system of government and the parliamentary system found in Europe.)

Energy Workers Mobilization (could be better)

Coming off the May 1st Labor day weekend all non-emergency workers in the massive coal, gas, oil, nuclear energy, transportation and power generation sector of the US economy calls in sick . Everyone who’s livelihood has been targeted for elimination.

Why not

What’s up with the choice of Democrat House members to show photos of? Neither Pelosi nor Ocasio-Cortez are on the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.

My guess why the photos is because the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis is Democrat-dominated, Pelosi is a Democrat and Speaker of the Democrat-dominated House, while Ocasio-Cortez, also Democrat, is the House sponsor of the Green New Deal bill. So, you’ve got a Democrat house speaker for a Democrat-dominated House and a House sponsor of the Green New Deal as poster children for a Democrat-dominated House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.

What better figure heads could there be? (^_^)

This is nothing new, Democrats have always been invested in fossil fuel and always will be. Pointing out to their voters that they are simply makes Democrat Party voters angry at you for “lying” about Democrat Party politicians, the truth never intrudes on their “reality”.

Perhaps the “Select Committee on the Climate Crisis” would be better suited with a different name, like “Committee on the Climate Crisis Policies”, or CCCP 🙂

Our “Leaders” are frequently not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but the slighter brighter one know that is what Ädvisers” are for..

My only life experience shows that being a CEO is one of the easiest jobs, just as long as you know how to pick people who know what they are doing. Then you jut have to keep a gentle eye” on them, and things usually work out very well.

This appears to be Trumps problem., not so much the picking of bright people, they seem very well qualified, but his inability to then “Gently keep a eye on them” He thinks that he is still on TV. “Your fired”.

It can’t have anything to do with selling yourself to the highest bidder?

Well if they own shares in PGE they are screwed .
Demo-Greens want no walls and to eliminate all fossil fuels,as well as associated jobs .
One would think Hillary want to be’s would have learned what happens when you threaten workers .
Now it’s airlines , ranchers , farmers and the entire energy sector . This is better than more Wikileaks .
