Isaac Dovere: Where do you see the politics of climate change right now?
Al Gore: I think that we are extremely close to a political tipping point. We may actually be crossing it right about now. The much-vaunted tribalism in American politics has contributed to an odd anomaly, in that the core of one of our political parties is uniquely—in all of the world—still rejecting not just the science, but also the messages from Mother Nature that have pushed toward, and perhaps are pushing across, this political tipping point right now.
More and more people on the conservative side of the spectrum are really changing their positions now. This election, in 2020, is almost certainly going to be different from any previous presidential election in that a number of candidates will be placing climate at or near the top of their agenda. And I think that by the time the first primary and caucus votes are cast a year from now, you’re going to see a very different political dialogue in the U.S.
The climate-related extreme-weather events are causing millions of people who had successfully pushed this issue into the background and into the projected distant future to now be finding ways to talk about it and to express their deep concern.
Dovere: When you were in politics and talking about climate change, you were made fun of for it. Is that weird to think about now?
Gore: Forty years ago, it was not easy to get people’s sustained attention for this looming crisis. It’s much easier now.

I’m aware far too many schools have been doing damage over the years by focussing on green indoctrination rather than education, trying to turn our kids into little eco-warriors, but despite this I am optimistic.
A funny thing happens after the kids graduate; they get their first set of bills, they run up debts and mortgages, and suddenly the importance of economic growth and the cost of expensive electricity and fuel becomes a lot more real to them.
I abase myself in abject humility in the presence of such erudite insight, such longsuffering tolerance in the face of brute ignorance from us, the unwashed unshriven mouth breathing drooling seething mass of uncomprehending hominoids. There is none wiser or more compassionate than the great Gore, may he live forever!

He has been so wrong so many times, and is still in denial that he’s wrong about anyone. <- Nutball, denial of reality – whatever, he has gone from pompous dork to irrelevant, greedy for your cash, and a tiresome bore. If he is this desperate for attention – so much so that he has to show up and make pronouncements every XX months – he has a problem. He could fill that empty space by finding a new hobby, something that doesn't annoy the rest of us.

No, it is inarguable that it was attributed to him many years after his death.
First printed reference to him saying it is around 1990. Apparently someone just made it up, a la “a smart person once said”…and this was transmogrified into “Einstein once said…”
There is no specific written evidence that he ever said it.
And there is no printed reference to be found earlier than around 1981 or sometimes 1980 (AA) according to a source with poor attribution.
Earliest confirmed literary reference is a Narcotics Anonymous pamphlet from 1981.
It was soon picked up by AA around the same time, and is often attributed to them, is most likely.
Could a new carnival ride be named after him? Not another roller coaster, mind you. It could be something more weird and repetitive, like a tracked ride spiraling downward almost endlessly, past blowing snow and wind tunnel rain, until you hit the bottom and come out in the water splash, amidst mountainous floating blobs of styrofoam and fake polar bears throwing fish at you.

But plenty of people believe him (- I’m sure he’s not so stupid, after all this time, to actually believe it himself). There must be a lot of money going into his account.
I think his job is to advertise the product iname order to help his friends get the public into the state of mind where they’ll be prepared to get a lot poorer… and stop cluttering up the place with more undesirable ‘useless eaters’.
The 2020 point was chosen because of the Presidentical campaign cycle and the huge effort to replace Trump with a Trudeau/Macron/Merkle class Lefty. All things in the world now revolve around removing Trump. Thus the tipping point of 2020. If Trump wins in 2020, the new tipping point will be either 2022 (Congressional races) or 2024 (Presidential race).
And they will likely win at one of the tipping points (elections) sometime in your lifetime. After all, they’ve got the education system, the culture, the traditional media and the Swamp. Imagine the Left controlling the Presidency, the Senate and the House.
Some of them will literally be gone in a few years, but what’s really frightening is the young replacements that are just now beginning to be elected. They are the spawn of the Gore doctrine being pushed during their schooling — more radical and even more ignorant than Gore. I shudder to think how close this nutcase came to being president.

For once Al Gore might be right when he predicts a 2020 Political Climate Change Tipping Point. By 2020, people may really be noticing the accelerating cooling down of the weather, the threadbare nature of the CAGW CO2 arguments and science and the mounting cost and futility of the band-aid ‘renewable’ energy solutions offered to solve the non-existent CO2 Climate threat.

We’re having a very pleasant break in the cold, a chinook which will disappear in a day or two. I can warm the entire house by letting the sun stream in through the southern windows. Cuts my gas bill. We;ll be back to business as usual before long, but this is weather, not climate change.

That sounds about right. There is an effect that is named after Mr. Gore, ‘ The Gore Effect ‘. Where ever he goes to speak about global warming, it is either cold or snowy and sometimes both.

I predicted that natural global cooling would commence by 2020 to 2030, in an article published 1Sept2002 in the Calgary Herald. I am now leaning closer to 2020 for cooling to start, possibly even earlier. I hope to be wrong. Humanity and the environment suffer during cooling periods.
I suggest that it is long past time for society to prepare for the possibility of moderate global cooling.
This would involve:
1. Strengthening of electrical grid systems, currently destabilized by costly, intermittent green energy schemes;
2. Reduce energy costs by all practical means.
3. Development of contingency plans for food production and storage, should early frosts impact harvests;
4. Develop contingency plans should vital services be disrupted by cold weather events – such as the failure of grid power systems, blocking of transportation corridors, etc.
5. Improve home insulation and home construction standards.
The current mania over (fictitious) catastrophic global warming has actually brewed the “perfect storm” – energy systems have been foolishly compromised and energy costs have been needlessly increased, to fight imaginary warming in a (probably) cooling world.
I suggest this is the prudent path for Western societies to follow. It has no downside, even if global cooling does not occur, and considerable upside if moderate cooling does commence.

I am a lot more pessimistic than most of those commenting.
We seem to be hanging our hat on the precept that in X years time what we are pointing out will be proven correct by observation and the public will “wakeup”.
However, the evidence is already here (Christie, Pielke Jr et al); the West Side Hwy is NOT underwater, the Arctic has NOT melted and children in the UK still experience snow.
The Progressives’ ability to change language , to focus most of the public on the “History of Now” and on emotion over logic has been successful in obfuscating real observation.
History is not on our side. In both the US and UK those on the Left sold promises of bright new worlds with no downside. In the States, starting with Woodrow Wilson and continuing with FDR they pushed “progressive” programs (progressive income tax, social security, Medicaid etc) that they claimed would only benefit the country.
There were folks, treated as reactionaries opposed to progress, who pointed out that the impact of those programs were hardly innocuous and would significantly impact the direction of the respective countries in a negative way (taxes would not stay at just a few percent, SS would not be just a few pennies and be held in a ” lockbox”, Medicaid would cost many times more than promised; and that the net result would be the development of a dependent “welfare” class).
Had the public of that time realized that those reactionaries were correct, they would never have gone along with those pie in the sky promises. What the Progressives count on is that over time the “public” will become accustomed to the negatives as the “new normal” and forget they were sold a bill of goods. Imagine the outcry from the public of today if those programs were pulled back to the size and limits in the initial proposals!
I just cannot envision a time 20 years from now that Al Gore or Michael Mann will be viewed in a negative light (no matter how deserved). I offer Paul Ehrlich as proof #1.

We keep on thinking that something will happen that will make socialists wake up and see how unworkable their systems are; how much damage those systems do to a healthy economy and ultimately how much misery and suffering they do to a population. But their beliefs are not based on evidence, so no amount of evidence to the contrary can alter their beliefs! In this regard, they are similar to radical Muslims on a Jihad…a holy war. Their sense of victimhood for themselves, or vicariously for others, is all the reason they need to do anything they want.
And what they claim to want is socialism. What their actions indicate they want is power. They are talking about doing away with the Electoral College, further opening the borders to future Democratic voters, making Washington D. C. the 51st state to give them 2 more Democratic Senators, and, of course, impeach Trump! None of these actions are for the good of the country. They are clearly and solely for the good of Democrats, and everyone else be damned.
The sea level is not rising very much, but the tide of socialism is becoming more impressive every day. The people of the United States now except levels of socialism that previous generations were willing to die to prevent. Much of our government is engaged in activities that are clearly unconstitutional, and our politicians do not even wait for the echoes of their oath to defend and uphold the Constitution to fade from the walls of congress, before doing everything they can to tear that document to shreds.
The socialists in communists countries declared over 80 years ago that they would defeat the United States of America without ever firing a shot. They even told us how they would do it; through infiltrating our education systems and other institutions with socialist ideals. One of those institutions became the media. The battle has been so subtle, that people in those institutions do not even realize the side they have aligned with.
The socialists haven’t always won the battles, but they are persistent. In war, the only battle you absolutely need to win is the last one, and they are much closer to that final battle now than they have ever been.

Sommer…thank you for posting this video. I have not seen it before, but I have seen much of what Yuri was saying unfolding before my eyes over the last 35 years. The Soviet Union is long gone, but the seeds they planted are still growing, and the harvest from those seeds is ready for the reaping.
The freshman Senators that have just been sworn in fit Yuri’s description of a ‘demoralized’ person perfectly, and they really are representative of a growing portion of the population. The Soviet plan continues to mature, even without the Soviets. The first and second phases of the plan have come to pass. The 3rd step he spoke of was a ‘crisis’. The stage has been set for an economic crisis unparalleled in the history of humanity. With Trump and the Congress spending more than ever, and the new wave of Democrats promising the moon to our ever-growing, ‘entitled’ population, It is only a matter of time until the monetary system crumbles to dust. China could trigger it any time they wanted to, but it is not in their best interest at this moment.
The fourth step, ‘normalization’, will be implemented by some power-hungry nation or tribe, and we will live to see the worst parts of ‘1984’ become our reality.
It doesn’t have to happen, but can someone tell me what is happening that will prevent it? Anyone?

I will add that since all-battery electric vehicles (BEVs) see a 20-50% drop in their fully-charged range in cold (0-20 deg-F) environmental conditions, those considering buying a new car with the expectation of keeping it for ten or more years may want to seriously consider an ICE-powered vehicle 😉
Allan, you left out late post-winter cold/thawing resulting in shortened planting and growing seasons. That means shifting the planting schedules for the over-winter grain crops, e.g., hard red winter wheat.
A late start to spring seems to be more and more common, and goes back to the 1990s, before I moved away from Chicago. Last year (2018), when Spring did not arrive until after April 30, tree buds did not break open for another two weeks. It’s creeping into later and later every year. Should be interesting to compare Spring 2019 with prior years.
It is rather unlikely that there will be much cooling by 2020, given that it appears that 2019 will be an El Nino year.
Of course, it is too early to predict whether the El Nino will be strong, or weak (presently it appears that it will be weak), but either way, 2019 is likely to be somewhat warmer than 2018 (if one can really measure temperatures to hundredths or even tenths of a degree).
It is weak and there are no signs of strengthening. Good chance it may not last long enough to even qualify as an official El Nino. Also, no atmospheric coupling has occurred which will reduce the overall impact.
The big question is will this El Nino be followed by La Nina. We haven’t had a strong La Nina since 2011-12 so we are overdue.
From what I can tell the AMO is a quasi-cyclic phenomena that may need some kind of kick to induce a change in phases. A strong La Nina during an extended solar minimum might just provide that kick. A quick movement into the next -AMO phase will certainly test the AGW conjecture.

finds historical correlation between solar cycles and volcanic/quake activity.
There’s a relationship between sunspot activity and magnetism.
Volcanic ash in the atmosphere creates cooling, and leads to famines, etc.
But his impressive AI system (costing him $100M, and with a gigantic data base) predicts (through pi cycles) the likelihood that the CACC scam will carry power into around 2030. So I guess they’ll blame cooling on us too.
I should add that the trend recently shows volcanic activity is consistent with the theory, and confirms that the planet is already embarked on a period of cooling, which has a high probability of being severe and rapid.
As I understand it, his recent analysis suggests 3 waves down into 2015 (I thnk). We’re currently in the first wave which has 2 or 3 yrs to bottom. His AI (Socrates) points to 2020 for the first part of world food shortages, caused by disruption of sunliht due probably to volcanic ash in the atmosphere..

Clay, your theology is a bit shaky. It is not your place to say which of our choices are or are not allowed, but if the intricate weave of uncountable lives, choices, consequences isn’t simultaneously and paradoxically free and also allowed or even directed, then we live in a random pointless delusional chaos of morally neutral insanity, and only sociopaths make logical sense.

To make my position clear, the “global warming”, “AGW”, “CO₂ caused warming”, “climate disruption”, “climate change” alarmism has nothing to do with Climate; it is apparently beguiled social and political posturing to, among other things, redistribute wealth, destroy capitalism, and to socialize the world. While he may not care about what evil politics are hoping to accomplish, Al Gore has made $Millions off it, and he wants more.
When nations (especially the USA) set precedent by giving exclusive sovereignty to the U.N. on Gun Control, “Climate Change” whatever that means, or some other drummed up global crisis, it is a slippery slope to the end of freedom in this world. Then in this new perilous environment, comes the supposed savior of the world – antichrist.
Whether the world caves in to the CAGW scam is the canary in the mine; if the canary dies, the world is screwed. But fear not, there is my first sentence above.
Atheism is also a religion. Religions do have to have a diety as an example see Taoism. *EVERYONE* has a religion, it just may not be deistic. Scientism (which people conflate with science) pre-supposes atheism, that everything can be explained by natural laws, which is provably false.

As I pointed out before, there are deistic and non-deistic religions. Back in the ’60s, the American Atheistic society took the IRS to court because they could not get tax-exempt status as a religious organization. The Supreme Court agreed with them that Atheism is a religion. To say that there is no god is every bit a religious statement as saying there is a god. Neither can be proved, you have to look at the evidence and make your decision on faith. Both are are faith-based worldviews and anyone who claims differently is fooling themselves.

America, for that matter much of the western world, is at the cusp of a political tipping point. But the forces I see do not favor ascendance of leftist nonsense. The left has exposed itself, and angered a great many they would feed off of.
Unfortunately far to many of them move back into their parents basement where they can be warm in the winter, the power bill is paid, possibly free food and free WiFi allowing them to be a social warrior on the net. Last but not least, they vote in the elections.

There is some merit in this concept, but it is not about Earth or turtles, it’s about global warming alarmism and fears of wilder weather, aka “warmist hysteria”.
Warmist hysteria started long ago with one nonsense paper, which stated that climate sensitivity to increasing atmospheric CO2 was about 5-10x higher than reality, probably written by Arhenius circa 1900. Later, political opportunists saw this fiction as a means of obtaining wealth and power, and issued zillions in grants to academics to write papers on every possible subject related to global warming alarmism and the dangers of increased atmospheric CO2. Nonsense piled upon nonsense, until modern academic research was an enormous stack of nonsense papers, piled one upon the other, which now reaches to infinity – and it’s nonsense, all the way down.

In philosophical history, the Modernists came into being as the Enlightenment (objectivity), reacting against the Renaissance etc (faith in God).
The Post Modernists (1950’s) rejected both as meaningless, and celebrate subjectivity and political change through Marxism.

The downward trend in tornadoes cannot be ignored. Not only was 2018 the first year without an EF 4 or 5 (AKA “violent”) tornado since records began (in 1950) but 2015, 2016 & 2017 had 3, 2 & 2 respectively. The long term average for 1950-2018 is more than 8 per year. The current 4 year “tornado drought” cannot be explained as just random variation since 7 violent tornadoes over a 4 year period would be more than 4 standard deviations below the mean (probability about 1 in 10 million).
If we get no hurricanes making landfall in 2019 (around a 30% chance), this decade will tie NOAA’s record for the fewest landfalling hurricanes in a decade since records began (in 1851).
The extreme-weather meme is destined to backfire on its proponents. The truth will out.

He might be right. The weather events are quite regular, but the way they are being touted as the most extremists of extreme by a lot of the media, it does get to a lot of people. In spite of the fact that the establishment view on global warming/climate change has become thoroughly entrenched everywhere you look (97% of scientists, the media, government, blah, blah), the implementation of their grand plan still requires a political tipping point. What never occurs, except occasionally, is the acknowledgement that we do not have the technology or the economic wherewithal to accomplish what they want. Of course, what they want more than anything is the “political tipping point”, and were they able to achieve that, we would soon find out they can’t do any of the things they claim are being blocked by this rag tag band of deniers, so they would just continue to exaggerate and blame the this rag tag band of deniers. It’s what they do.
I believe that all people that consider true science to be a noble endeavor of humanity need to be very worried about this impending “tipping point”: if within the next 2-5 years Earth indeed starts a somewhat long (say greater than 10 year-duration) decline in average global temperature—whatever that means as long as it is calculated consistently— then global humanity will simply lose faith in, and respect for, the scientific method. Populations around the globe have been assured for decades that “the science is settled” and that as much of “97% of all scientists agree” that climate change since 1850 is due predominately to mankind’s emissions of greenhouse gases, specifically CO2.
How do you imagine the average person will react when they realize that “science” has basically lied to them? I predict that the reputation of science will not be recovered for more than two generations (i.e., about 50 years).
