Polish labor union that stood up to the Soviet Bloc and changed the world joins Heartland on front lines of resistance to climate alarmism
KATOWICE, POLAND (December 6, 2018) – The Heartland Institute and representatives of Solidarity, the historic labor union founded by Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Walesa that helped bring down the Iron Curtain, signed a joint statement on Wednesday calling on the United Nations at COP24 to ensure the “restoration of the Scientific Method and the dismissal of ideological dogma at the United Nations.”
The joint statement, created at Solidarity’s prompting and written cooperatively between the two organizations on December 5, was submitted to the UN Conference of the Parties climate conference in Katowice today.
“The Silesian Region of Solidarity, the Secretariat of Mining and Energy of Solidarity, and The Heartland Institute express skepticism of the assertions of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that the world stands at the edge of a climate catastrophe,” said the statement. “Solidarity and The Heartland Institute together stress that there is no scientific consensus on the main causes and consequences of climate change.”

The joint statement was signed by Jaroslaw Grzesik, Chairman of Secretariat, Mining and Energy of Solidarity; Dominik Kolorz, president of the Silesian Region of Solidarity; and Heartland Institute Senior Fellow for Environment and Energy Policy James Taylor, who represented the organization.
The communique also stated that The Heartland Institute – a U.S.-based free-market think tank known globally for its work on scientifically opposing climate alarmism – and Solidarity would begin “working together more closely to advance sound, science-based public policy.”
Solidarity took the initiative in 2014 to translate from English to Polish Climate Change Reconsidered II: Physical Science – part of a series of scientific reports by the Nongovernmental Interntional Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC) – and invited Heartland to its office in Katowice on December 5 to give presentations on the latest climate science and the failure of green energy plans in neighboring Germany. The latter presentation was delivered by Wolfgang Müller, general secretary of the European Institute for Climate and Energy (EIKE).
The communique states that Solidarity’s Katowice representatives were “very satisfied by the new science and policy presentations from Heartland during their COP24 meeting,” adding that “the presentations assured Solidarity that their doubts about current, alarmist climate policy are correct.”
“We, speaking as one, believe in the restoration of the Scientific Method and the dismissal of ideological dogma at the United Nations,” the joint statement said. “That means a healthy skepticism of data interpretation and policy conclusions and an end to the war on science and scientists by powerful state-backed forces.”
The statement declared:
· Global leaders should focus their efforts on energy affordability and availability that raise living standards around the world.
· The negative impacts of expensive energy on human health and welfare are manifest and devastating.
· Affordable energy is absolutely necessary to lift people out of poverty and secure a brighter future for the people of the world.
· The most important joint task will be educating the public and policy makers on climate policy, “especially the world’s youth” – who have been indoctrinated by climate alarmist dogma for generations.
“Solidarity has proven time and again that it will stand up the common man against the ruling elites,” Taylor said. “Solidarity, like the Heartland Institute, does not shy away from pointing out flaws in the United Nations’ asserted climate crisis. Sound science is on our side and we are honored to work closely, now and in the future, with Solidarity.”

The Poles should be a bit gunshy of embracing any sort of fanaticism, having suffered under Stalinists since 1944.

Solidarity is not embracing any form of fanaticism, it’s making a stand against a particular form of fanaticism. Solidarity has an outstanding example of how a trade union can act in the interest of all of it’s nation, rather than the self-interest of a few members, for the last 30. years. Other nation’s trade unions should take note.
Even before that. what about the 1919 – 1920 Polish Soviet War. That seems to have slipped out of the, Western, history books
I feel a swell of skepticism.
I hope so but as their false theories fall look for the alarmists next falsehood to foist upon the world. Cooling to warming to change to…whats next? maybe methane? water vapour? oxygen? When you have trillions of dollars of free cash coming your way that will line the pockets of climate bureaucrats and tin pot dictators you don’t go quietly into the dustpan of history.

Whilst calling for “the restoration of the scientific method…”, there is no indication by Solidarity or the Heartland Institute that they intend to provide any evidence against the global scientific consensus.

Here’s a test. 1) Is there a 97% consensus of scientists who believe human caused climate change is putting the planet in imminent danger? 2) Did you know that consensus actually applies to ‘opinions and not facts? 3) Did you know that there was a letter signed by 100 prominent scientists against Einstein’s theories of relativity and gravitation? 100 against one, and can you guess who came out on top of that contest?
BTW, I am a scientist and engineer and as a geology student I even studied paleoclimate. By your mindless use of the little opinion and facts homily without even putting it in your own words, shows you use the well known “talking points” as a substitute for thought. And, speaking of consensus, history tells us that, time after time, the consensus turns out to be totally wrong. I’ve just watched the PBS documentaries on eugenics. In its time this poisonous perversion of science was the consensus. It lasted for many years. But it started to crumble when scientists started to point out that its “scientific consensus” was actually based on data manipulation and activisim. Sound familiar? The final dagger in its heart was provided by the Nazis, who took sterilisation to its next logical stage: mass murder.
In my opinion today’s perversion of science is far worse than euginics. As shown throughout history global warming has always been a huge benefit to humanity. It’s during the cold periods when humanity suffered. It’s climate change alarmism that is the true catastrophe.

Excellent news. However I am a little concerned that the following words in the statement may be twisted by the proponents of renewables and used against the aims of Solidarity and Heartland:

For example, in Australia retail energy prices are rising rapidly due to the insidious Large Scale Renewable Energy Target (aka the LRET), which heavily subsidises all large scale renewable generation by means of ‘clean energy certificates’ which are given to these generators to sell on a closed ‘market’ to energy retailers, who must buy them or pay a fine of A$65.00 per MW, or about the wholesale price of a megawatt of electricity. Effectively a 100% subsidy to renewables! Naturally the retailers have to pass this huge cost onto their customers, raising the price of all electricity to domestic consumers. Furthermore, the LRET also requires that the retailers must buy every megawatt that the renewable generators produce, forcing the base load generators to reduce their output. In fact we have reached the point at which older base load generators are being shut down, and new base load generation cannot be funded.
However, our governments, energy regulators and renewable rent-seekers all falsely claim the opposite – that this rise in the retail cost of electricity is due to the ‘increasing cost of fossil-fuelled generation’, and that ‘renewables now cost less than fossil-fuelled generation’. So the proponents of renewables, here in Australia at least, claim that they are ‘improving energy affordability and availability, whilst actually doing the opposite. That is the twist! Beware!
Yes, all actors in energy production, distribution and retailing have conspired to make the subsidies, costings and pricing landscape so complicated that Sherlock Holmes and John Watson would struggle to demystify it.
And that suits the politicians, bureaucrats and suppliers just fine.
Yeah, cheap renewables are the new ‘facts’. Fake news is so rife that its become the new standard for judging objective, old fashioned-type, fact-based news as fake!

5) CO2 is a pollutant.
6) Green energy is nirvana.
7) A hard core criminal in most cases can be converted to change and repent if only through enough reeducation.
8) There are more than 2 genders.
9) The main stream media is not biased towards leftest positions.
10) The Chinese Communist party will eventually reform and stop its attempted domination of the world.
11) First past the post election systems are bad and everything should be proportional representation.
12) In past generations the non white world was noble and without violence nor discrimination (the noble savage hypothesis).
13) Open borders are compatible with the modern welfare state.

For the record Poland produces about 1/3 of EU coal production followed close by (would you believe it?) Germany. 🙂 again. These are approximate figures depending on what source you use.
No country suffered more than Poland during WW2 followed by years of communism. Freedom, prosperity and truth must mean a lot to them.

Lignite has to be analyzed on some basis and heat content can be expressed in several ways: as received, air dried, dry, dry ash free, as fired and what ever you like.
Lignite has less energy per kg as mined but after drying is quite high. It has more hydrogen and less carbon per kg, ash free than other coals (some, not all).
Having done the calculations, I do not believe the claim that Lignite has more CO2 emissions than hard coals. It has less, and when Germany decided to build more than twenty new coal fired generation plants, they said this was being done so as to minimize the CO2 emissions. This contradicts the mere assertions of “green” groups that Lignite is “more polluting” in terms of CO2. If one puts Lignite into a combusted designed for hard coal it creates more PM, which a product of incomplete pl combustion. In a properly designed combusted it has virtually no PM. I have built some. They work.
The claim that Lignite “emits more CO2 than hard coal” rests on misrepresenting the energy content per kg as mined and as burned – i.e. it ignores the equipment and the reality. It is a misrepresentation of convenience.

I believe that, on the part of Poland at least, these people have seen Socialism (of the Nazi kind), Communism and Despotism and had to suffer under it all. These people are super sensitive to creeping socialism of any kind and they see the danger and the real agenda that is disguised by this “Global Warming” madness.

My feeling is that by providing fossil fuel energy in impoverished regions includes benefits such as:
• Less cutting down of trees and burning cattle dung etcetera (lung diseases)
• A reduction in childbirth rates
• A longer-term potential reduction in military conflicts
• Etcetera.
It’s an absolute no-brainer to benefit humanity.
Might for instance India’s still emerging economy gain momentum and improve living standards around the whole world through interactive world trade annat?

This is the positive effect coal has had on trees in England.
1,000 years of decline from ~15% coverage to ~5%, then recovered to ~10% in 100 years following the industrial revolution with the expectation of recovery to 12% by 2060.

Being honest and advancing real science, these are our greatest assets. The shrills and politically motivated advocates of fake science, must be revealed and stopped. The political left’s game plan, is to use their fake global crisis, purely to advance and control the public, via energy rationing.
The UN, through its agencies, are on a mission. The objective is, authority over world affairs without involving, or resorting, to that complicated democratic stuff. The control of energy sources, via energy policies world wide, controls peoples access to affordable energy. It is the only option needed, to meet the UN’s global control ambitions.
Totalitarianism or un-elected authority has been tried already, it does not work.
