The media has dutifully reported this latest round of climate “tipping points.” The latest UN report has extended the climate deadline by which we must allegedly empower the UN bureaucrats to save the world until 2030 or just 12 more years!
Former Vice President Al Gore has also joined in, piggybacking on the UN for yet another tipping point warming.
Bear in mind, he once before said we have 10 YEARS, back in 2006 with his “An Inconvenient Truth”:
Even NASA’s lead global warming advocate, Dr. Gavin Schimidt, has had enough of the UN and media’s climate tipping points.
Schmidt tweeted on October 7: I agree…that framing this report as ‘we only have 10 years to act’ as done by the Washington Post in their headline is neither correct nor helpful. Making better decisions on emissions is always going to be helpful – whether it’s now, in 5 years or in 20 years.”
CNN reported on October 8: “Governments around the world must take ‘rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society’ to avoid disastrous levels of global warming, says a stark new report from the global scientific authority on climate change.”
But as the new book, The Politically Incorrect Guide® to Climate Change reveals, climate tipping points have a long history of repetition, moved deadlines and utter failure. The book documents that the earliest climate “tipping point” was issued in 1864 by MIT professor who warned of “climatic excess” unless humans changed their ways.

1864 Tipping Point Warns of “Climatic Excess”
“As early as 1864 George Perkins Marsh, sometimes said to be the father of American ecology, warned that the earth was ‘fast becoming an unfit home for its “noblest inhabitant,”’ and that unless men changed their ways it would be reduced ‘to such a condition of impoverished productiveness, of shattered surface, of climatic excess, as to threaten the deprivation, barbarism, and perhaps even extinction of the species.’” —MIT professor Leo Marx
The climate change scare campaign has always relied on arbitrary deadlines, dates by which we must act before it’s too late. Global warming advocates have drawn many lines in the sand, claiming that we must act to solve global warming—or else.
“We are running out of time. We have to get an ambitious global agreement,” warned then–UN climate chief Christiana Figueres at the 2014 People’s Climate March. “This is a huge crisis.”
At the UN climate summit in Copenhagen in 2009, Al Gore sought UN climate agreement—immediately. “We have to do it this year. Not next year, this year,” he demanded. “And of course the clock is ticking because Mother Nature does not do bailouts.”
Gore has warned repeatedly of the coming tipping point. Climate change “can cross a tipping point and suddenly shift into high gear,” the former vice president claimed in 2006.
Laurie David, the producer of Gore’s film An Inconvenient Truth, said in 2007 that “we have to have action we have
to do something right now to stop global warming.”
Prince Charles has also warned that time is running out. “We should compare the planet under threat of climate change to a sick patient,” urged the heir to the British throne.
“I fear there is not a moment to lose.”
“The clock is ticking. . . . Scientists believe that we have ten years to bring emissions under control to prevent a catastrophe,” reported ABC News.
But these “tipping points” and “last chance” claims now have a long history. The United Nations alone has spent more than a quarter of a century announcing a series of ever-shifting deadlines by which the world must act or face disaster from anthropogenic climate change.
Deadlines Come and Go
Recently, in 2014, the United Nations declared a climate “tipping point” by which the world must act to avoid dangerous global warming. “The world now has a rough deadline for action on climate change. Nations need to take aggressive action in the next 15 years to cut carbon emissions, in order to forestall the worst effects of global warming, says the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,” reported the Boston Globe.
But way back in 1982, the UN had announced a two-decade tipping point for action on environmental issues. Mostafa Tolba, executive director of the UN Environment Program (UNEP), warned on May 11, 1982, that the “world faces an ecological disaster as final as nuclear war within a couple of decades unless governments act now.” According to Tolba, lack of action would bring “by the turn of the century, an environmental catastrophe which will witness devastation as complete, as irreversible as any nuclear holocaust.”
In 1989, the UN was still trying to sell that “tipping point” to the public. According to a July 5, 1989, article in the San Jose Mercury News, Noel Brown, the then-director of the New York office of UNEP was warning of a “10-year window of opportunity to solve” global warming. According to the Herald, “A senior U.N. environmental official says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000. Coastal flooding and crop failures would create an exodus of ‘eco-refugees,’ threatening political chaos.”
But in 2007, seven years after that supposed tipping point had come and gone, Rajendra Pachauri, then the chief of the UN IPPC, declared 2012 the climate deadline by which it was imperative to act: “If there’s no action before 2012, that’s too late. What we do in the next two to three years will determine our future. This is the defining moment.”
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced his own deadline in August 2009, when he warned of “incalculable” suffering without a UN climate deal in December 2009. And in 2012, the UN gave Planet Earth another four-year reprieve. UN Foundation president and former U.S. Senator Tim Wirth called Obama’s re-election the “last window of opportunity” to get it right on climate change.
Heir to the British throne Prince Charles originally announced in March 2009 that we had “less than 100 months to alter our behavior before we risk catastrophic climate change.” As he said during a speech in Brazil, “We may yet be able to prevail and thereby to avoid bequeathing a poisoned chalice to our children and grandchildren. But we only have 100 months to act.”
To his credit, Charles stuck to this rigid timetable—at least initially. Four months later, in July 2009, he declared a ninety-six-month tipping point. At that time the media dutifully reported that “the heir to the throne told an audience of industrialists and environmentalists at St James’s Palace last night that he had calculated that we have just 96 months left to save the world. And in a searing indictment on capitalist society, Charles said we can no longer afford consumerism and that the ‘age of convenience’ was over.”
At the UN climate summit in Copenhagen in 2009, Charles was still keeping at it: “The grim reality is that our planet has reached a point of crisis and we have only seven years before we lose the levers of control.”
As the time expired, the Prince of Wales said in 2010, “Ladies and gentlemen we only—we now have only 86 months left before we reach the tipping point.”
By 2014, a clearly exhausted Prince Charles seemed to abandon the countdown, announcing, “We are running out of time. How many times have I found myself saying this over recent years?”
In the summer of 2017, Prince Charles’s one-hundred-month tipping point finally expired.26 What did Charles have to say? Was he giving up? Did he proclaim the end times for the planet? Far from it. Two years earlier, in 2015, Prince Charles abandoned his hundred-month countdown and gave the world a reprieve by extending his climate tipping point another thirty-five years, to the year 2050!
A July 2015 interview in the Western Morning News revealed that “His Royal Highness warns that we have just 35 years to save the planet from catastrophic climate change.” So instead of facing the expiration of his tipping point head on, the sixty-nine-year-old Charles kicked the climate doomsday deadline down the road until 2050 when he would be turning
the ripe age of 102. (Given the Royal Family’s longevity, it is possible he may still be alive for his new extended deadline.)
Former Irish President Mary Robinson issued a twenty-year tipping point in 2015, claiming that global leaders have “at most two decades to save the world.”
Al Gore announced his own ten-year climate tipping point in 2006 and again in 2008, warning that “the leading experts predict that we have less than 10 years to make dramatic changes in our global warming pollution lest we lose our ability to ever recover from this environmental crisis.” In 2014, with “only two years left” before Gore’s original deadline, the climatologist Roy Spencer mocked the former vice president, saying “in the grand tradition of prophets of doom, Gore’s prognostication is not shaping up too well.”
Penn State Professor Michael Mann weighed in with a 2036 deadline. “There is an urgency to acting unlike anything we’ve seen before,” Mann explained. Media outlets reported Mann’s made a huge media splash with his prediction, noting “Global Warming Will Cross a Dangerous Threshold in 2036.”
Other global warming activists chose 2047 as their deadline, while twenty governments from around the globe chose 2030 as theirs, with Reuters reporting that millions would die by 2030 if world failed to act on climate: “More than 100 million people will die and global economic growth will be cut by 3.2% of GDP by 2030 if the world fails to tackle climate change, a report commissioned by 20 governments said on Wednesday. As global avg. temps rise due to ghg emissions, the effects on the planet, such as melting ice caps, extreme weather, drought and rising sea levels, will threaten populations and livelihoods, said the report conducted by the humanitarian organization DARA.”
As we saw in chapter five, top UK scientist Sir David King warned in 2004 that that by 2100 Antarctica could be the only habitable continent.
Tipping point rhetoric seems to have exploded beginning in 2002. An analysis by Reason magazine’s Ron Bailey found that tipping points in environmental rhetoric increased dramatically in that year.
The Last Chance
Michael Mann warned that the 2015 UN Paris summit “is probably the last chance” to address climate change. But the reality is that every UN climate summit is hailed as the last opportunity to stop global warming.

Newsweek magazine weighed in with its own tipping point: “The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find
it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality.” That warning appeared in an April 28, 1975, article
about global cooling! Same rhetoric, different eco-scare.

“Serially Doomed”
Perhaps the best summary of the tipping-point phenomenon comes from UK scientist Philip Stott. “In essence, the Earth has been given a 10-year survival warning regularly for the last fifty or so years. We have been serially doomed,” Stott explained. “Our post-modern period of climate change angst can probably be traced back to the late-1960s, if not earlier. By 1973, and the ‘global cooling’ scare, it was in full swing, with predictions of the imminent collapse of the world within ten to twenty years, exacerbated by the impacts of a nuclear winter. Environmentalists were warning that, by the year 2000, the population of the US would have fallen to only 22 million. In 1987, the scare abruptly changed to ‘global warming’, and the IPCC (the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) was established (1988), issuing its first assessment report in 1990, which served as the basis of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).

The tipping point happened with the inception of the IPCC, when climate science tipped from conforming to the scientific method, to conforming to a political narrative. Any scientist in any field with a scintilla of common sense and a dedication to the pursuit of science should be embarrassed that this insanity has gained as much traction as it has.

Yes, human-caused Global Cooling was considered an established fact by some climate scientists, just like human-caused Global Warming is considered to be an established fact today. The level of certainty was equal for both groups.
Global Cooling was later seen to be just another periodic cooling period in the temperature record.
Although it’s a little early, it looks to me like Global Warming is also going to be a periodic warming in the temperature record.
The temperature goes up for a few decades (1910-1940), then the temperatures go down for a few decades (1940-1980), then the temperatures go up again for a few decades.
The cooling and the warming are of equal magnitudes, and start from about the same place on the temperature record, both lows and highs. The cooling and warming is cyclical and CO2 looks to have nothing to do with it.
Here’s Hansen 1999 to give you an idea of the true temperature profile of the Earth. It shows the ups and downs, whereas the bogu, bastardized global surface temperature charts have erased all these ups and downs and turned the official surface temperature profile into a continuously rising Hockey Stick chart in order to make it appear that the temperature record profile matches the CO2 rise profile, which is also a continuously rising curve.
Some will claim that Hansen 1999 only represents the USA, but I would contend that Hansen 1999 is the true temperature profile of the Earth because there are a variety of unmodified charts from around the globe and from both hemispheres which show the same temperature profile as the Hansen 1999 chart.
None of the unmodified charts resemble the bogus, bastardized global surface temperature charts.
The real tipping point, is 12 years after fusion reactors become commercially viable. With unlimited power, we can desalinize enough sea water to make the Sahara and Gobi deserts green (again). With abundant food resources, we can divert some food to replace the need for oil.
There are technologys we can use now,
For low cost desalination.
Yet none are willing to get to work ……
Probably because Israeil scientists are the experts in this field, and the same people who support the AGW narrative also support the academic and scientific boycott of Israel.

Perhaps he’s starting to see the truth now that his job may depend on it. It couldn’t be more obvious from the most recent IPCC report that they’re grasping at straws trying to manipulate emotions in order to keep the UNFCCC and its destructive agenda intact. Simply put, they have over played their hand and have jumped the shark.
What the Trump administration says and what it does may be two different things?

Isn’t it strange how similar belief in global warming is to belief in biblical apocalypse?
When I was in college fifty years ago I used to listen to a radio preacher while I ate lunch after morning classes. I don’t remember what denomination he was. I think the program was called the “World Tomorrow.” I wasn’t a believer or anything like that. I mostly just wanted the background noise on the radio and I found the program amusing. The program predicted that based on the Bible the end days were about to start within the next few years and that all the Bible prophecies proved it. He predicted enormous wars were about to engulf the earth and all sorts of other terrible things that were about to begin in the next few years. While I respect the religious beliefs and philosophies of people I disagree with, well the reality is that we are still here and the apocalypse didn’t happen.
Now we live in a time when equally believing and sincere people are forecasting, in the name of their so-called science, that the end is here and is about to start.
How ironic it is that people like Al Gore and Prince Charles, not to mention all the other thousands of “me too” believers, can’t see how much they have in common with the radio preacher and his thousands of believers on that radio program fifty years ago “The World Tomorrow.” But then of course they wouldn’t see it that way.

The unelected UNFCC and IPCC are like little kids having a temper tantrum and saying they are going to hold their breath until they die. Well, let them. Most normal people just don’t believe the hype anymore, the IPCC having cried Wolf now too many times. But the politicians, academia and media can’t give it up, because it supports free monies for grants, sells copy or they see the revenues from carbon taxes as a never ending supply of extorted wealth they can penalize everybody with, but mainly the poor because ultimately survival boils down to the utilization of carbon of some type or another that creates CO2.

We need to put all of these people on their own planet so that they will stop asking us for money and/or trying to scare us. I really do believe, more and more, that they all need to spend time in the company of some serious therapy.
It is 80F in my area today. Rainy and chilly all last week, and now some nice sunshie and heat and I”m happy with it. No frost yet, so no Indian Summer, but I expect that before month end. However, while I may be happy because it’s summer’s last gasp before real chilly weather sets in, and it is a normal part of a normal cycle, these people are, as a group, the silliest, most impossibly self-important dingbats on the planet.
Winter will get here soon enough. There is already snow in the Great Plains and up into Montana/Wyoming (ski bums happy!) and there is nothing unusual about this. It happens every year.
No, you cannot have any money from me. No, I will not listen to you because you are loons. And no, I do not believe the planet is going to become uninhabitable, but I would really appreciate it if you found your OWN planet to live on and leave the rest of us alone.

I am increasingly depressed that our politicians, from Cabinet Secretaries and Cabinet Ministers down to District Council Members, have yet again swallowed, hook, line, sinker, rod and reel, all this IPCC guff and the MSM, broadcasters and newspaper owners, have done likewise.
I have a friend, ex-service, refinery engineer, independant local Councillor with no party affiliation. I gave him a copy of Anthony’s paper to his local council about fracking ( a big thing here in Central Scotland ) and asked that he read it with an open mind. He said he read about a quarter of it and stopped because the writer was so obviously pro fracking.
When you are faced with that, how do you get folk with influence to change their minds?

I would love to see a chart with a horizontal line for each “we have this many years to act” warning. That would make it obvious that there is no deadline. Only a calendar.

Corals have 500 million year evolutionary history and survived tens of millions of years on Earth that was around 10C warmer than today, and through glacials when it was around 10C colder than today. That is a +/- 10C fluctuation. Evolution selects for resilience. Such fragile life-form that dies off from 1C temperature fluctuation could not possibly have survived for half a billion years. And it possibly was 1C warmer than today in the holocene maximum in 6000 B.C. and it definitely was much warmer in the Eemian maximum of the last interglacial period around 125 000 years ago when Ocean levels were 4-6 metres higher than today and hippos swam in the Thames and Rhine. Yet the corals continued their sempiternal evolutionary journey that had started hundreds of millions of years before the dinosaurs. So how come they are now threatened with extinction from 1C fluctuation? It seems a preposterous claim. Like the Himalayan snows melting in 30 years, of an earlier IPCC report. But the media have reported it uncritically everywhere. Where are the critical comments from self-respecting biologists?

Critical comments are lacking from self-respecting scientists in many fields. If you’re a scientist, it’s almost impossible to believe that other ostensibly intelligent scientists could be so wrong about something so important. The tendency is to consider that all scientists follow the established rules of science and to extend to others the benefit of the doubt as the experts in their respective fields. We are seeing the downside of what’s ordinarily considered a professional courtesy.

I always use the example of coral reefs to demonstrate how science has long departed the stage in the new “climate change” religion. Tropical corals are found in waters that vary from around 24C to 32C. The one thing they don’t like is sudden changes in temperature where mass bleaching can occur. Sudden changes in temperature have nothing to do with long term warming, but are caused by natural short term weather systems such as El Nino.
Quad erat demonstardum – current natural coral bleaching has nothing to do with the “settled” science of climate change.
But be careful who you tell. Peter Rudd made the mistake of opening his mouth and the anti-science James Cook University fired him.

But it’s worse than that – the claim is global average temperature, not daily temperature everywhere.
The global average temperature could rise by half a degree without the temperature at the Great Barrier Reef risk at all – it could even fall. Plenty if places now have below long term average temperatures in a year even though the global average is higher than average.
Those past tipping point dates would look more hysterical as bullet points – or maybe a cartoon 🙂

Two comments.
1. SR 15 would be better named SR 1.5 because it moves Schellnhuber’s arbitrary 2C to 1.5C. The reason is that all recent observational ECS estimates are ~1.5-1.7 so 2 will never be reached. Oops.
2. The need to continuously move the tipping point goalposts is not only obvious because past tipping points were past but nothing tipped. It is because the underlying ‘science’ is junk. Sheesh, 100 years from now historians will post articles about the “great climate scare of the early 21st century.” They will tell people about the arbitrary predictions and tipping points, which just got pushed back again and again. Psychologists will try to find out how it was possible to fool millions of people into believing this. Attention seeking media, corrupted science, replacing of our traditional religions with worshipping of nature, and our natural pessimism will probably be some of the reasons given.

Just because researchers keep crying “wolf” doesn’t mean the wolf isn’t coming. Those who can see what is happening want something done about it, so they are hopeful something can still be done. It can’t. It’s too late. It’s not going to be pretty. Human civilization is going to experience a “correction” from nature. And the fools will no doubt blame those who cried “wolf.”

They claim we are already in a crisis but all I can see is some of the mildest spring and summer weather I can remember.
The Climate is getting milder. It is not overheating. The Alarmists should stop trying to scare the underinformed (this would include those who think they know what they are talking about, but really don’t).
Isn’t it funny, when a winter is “warm” it’s called mild. When it’s extra cold it’s called brutal. Why would anyone want the latter?
So DARA (who they?) warns that we face a 3.2% reduction in global GDP growth by 2030 if we do not address climate change.
The UN solution is to spend $2.4 trillion a year between now and 2030. If all countries contribute equally according to the size of their economies, the UK would have to increase government spending by 17% a year for each of the next 12 years.
A guaranteed 17% cost for a theoretical 3.2% saving. Brilliant.
My biggest concern is that the propagation of wind turbines around the world will suck energy out of the air and we will enter a period of global slowing! Workdays will get longer, we will apparently age faster, and live apparent shorter lives. Al Gote should have seen this coming!!!!
Richard Lindzen, former Professor if Meteorology at MIT in his recent lecture in London evokes a picture in 80 years time of ” a landscape degraded by rusting windfarms and decaying solar panel arrays.” His lecture is a paragon of rationality and identifies the errors of attributing AGW to man’s activities alone.
