Grauniad: “The easy way to cut emissions – closing coal power stations – is exhausted”… AEUHHH???? US coal exports to Asia are booming!

Guest AEUHHH???? by David Middleton

Apathy_01Apathy_02

Three years after world leaders signed the Paris climate agreement, we’re about to better understand what that deal means for how we live our lives. On Monday, a major report from the UN’s climate science panel will set out what it will take to limit global warming to 1.5C, the key Paris target.

There are reasons to think the world is, finally, getting to grips with climate change. Carbon emissions are still rising but more slowly than before, and in many countries they’re falling. The UK has slashed its emissions to 19th-century levels, and we’re not alone – plenty of other countries, including the US, are making progress as well. Crucially, that’s happened without many people noticing, suggesting the world might be able to deal with the problem without having to persuade the public to change their polluting lifestyles.

But this is wishful thinking. The UK’s recent emissions cuts have mostly come from shutting coal power stations, which had few friends, and there aren’t many left to close…

[…]

The Grauniad

“The easy way to cut emissions – closing coal power stations – is exhausted…”

Is there any point in reading beyond the sub-headline?

Presumably, this Climate Policy and Communications Specialist isn’t referring solely to the UK when he asserts that “the easy way to cut emissions – closing coal power stations – is exhausted.”  A Climate Policy and Communications Specialist would surely understand that the UK is irrelevant on the world energy stage.

Apathy_03

Since any Climate Policy and Communications Specialist would clearly understand that the UK is irrelevant, he must be saying that there are no more coal-fired power plants remaining to be closed in the rest of the world… In which case, he’s woefully uninformed.

It's a fossil fueled world
The easy way to cut emissions – closing coal power stations – is exhausted…”

That even made Mr. Data laugh…

The world world supply of “coal power stations” won’t even be exhausted in 2040.

The divergence of reality from the opinion of this Climate Policy and Communications Specialist makes me wonder, “What are the qualifications to being a Climate Policy and Communications Specialist?”  Let’s ask LinkedIn…

There are many, many falsehoods out there about coal. The biggest, of course, is that “coal is dead,” an organized effort to scare away potential investors of the world’s most vital source of electricity. Indeed, the reality is quite different than what some insist that you believe. In fact, coal is still the main source of power in a leading 18 U.S. states, and still supplies almost 30% of American power. ” Does that sound like an energy source that is….”dead?”

Globally, coal is even more alive. “Think the Big Banks Have Abandoned Coal? Think Again.” Even a solar magazine admits: “China to add 259 GW of coal capacity, satellite imagery shows.” For reference, 259 GW is more than twice the amount of power capacity that mighty Texas has FROM ALL SOURCES.

Now Asia – which accounts for close to 80% of total global coal usage – is increasingly turning to the U.S. to supply coal. We are still the world’s third largest coal producer. The U.S. supplies both types, met coal to produce steel and steam coal to produce electricity. “U.S. coal exports increased by 61% in 2017 as exports to Asia more than doubled.

The U.S. has a 360-year supply of coal to bolster our expanding export market. The trade war with the U.S. however, could have China looking to expand domestic supply, and the country’s coal production caps have been found to be “technically infeasible.

Setting aside the fact that the actual data support Mr. Clemente’s views on coal, the academic and professional credentials are also 100% in his favor.

But, but, but, that wasn’t the point of the Grauniad article!

Sorry… the article reached terminal stupidity before it ever got to the SJW-whining bit:

Persuading people to cut down on things they enjoy for the sake of the climate might seem impossible. In most European countries, about three-quarters of the public say they’re worried about climate change, yet less than a third would accept higher taxes on fossil fuels to cut emissions.

But this climate apathy can be overcome if it’s tackled in the right way. The first step is to understand the psychology behind apathy.

Proof of the fact that it is a scam is easily shown by showing how much the reduction in CO2 would be if all the money spent on the renewable energy effort and climate change analysis had been spent on Nuclear Power plants. Even NG only reduces CO2 by about 50% over Coal. And the use of renewable mandates are forcing the shut down of Nuclear, a planned effect IMHO.

David, maybe I am wrong….but this guys are trying to readjust their scam.

You see is a “great achievement” to have reduced the danger of the AGW from the very least 2C breaking point to 1.5C most higher expected point now.

A “great” “miracle” of these guys achievement….nothing else than that….a result due to a need of readjustment for their scam really.

So is this claim of somehow reduced human CO2 emissions, as in the Britain’s case claim….nothing more than a desperate way to further adjust their scam to the reality in an attempt to “bye some more time”…regardless of anything else there.

In a way these claims keep pushing the stake through the heart of AGW but these guys do not care or mind for as long as it could be claimed that this due to their acts and efforts of reducing AGW and it’s ugly possible impact, especially when the risk of stopping now, and not paying them, or stop paying tribute to them in any way, may lead again to a possible environment catastrophe due to AGW.

Is these guys that actually succeeded in doing all this, reducing the risk from at the very least daring of 2C to 1.5C at most , like over night….and now out of the blue, claim that that probably so
because, against any odds in any expected way possible imagined, human CO2 emissions have dropped, just like that over night, because that what truth is, because they say so.

It is really ridiculous, by any standard, apart from that of a hipper hot propaganda furore.
The very “energy” and “blood” of AGW scam.

Well that is how I see it…any way.

Yeah, UK converted it’s largest coal fired station , Drax, to burn wood.

So UK is now cutting down living oak forest in USA , wasting feul drying and transporting the wood instead of burning dead trees from millions of years ago.

They then don’t count the “carbon” from chopping down fine living oaks. If yo rig the calculations you can get whatever answer you want.

Greg

Many many moons ago, Scotland was a deciduous forest evidently.

But they chopped all the trees down and burned them for fuel. The country is now covered with heather and bracken where the forests used to be.

You would imagine that would give someone a clue that burning good timber is not a sustainable practice.

If the oak is cheaper than spruce and pine, then it is OK with me. I just doubt that would happen largely without government subsidies on oak.

Old oak can have unusable trunk wood, so some oak ends up being burned in any case. Such is economy.

I prefer oak in my fireplace. Hot fire, good heat content. About the same price as electrons over voltage.

I’m sure they burn a mixture of different kinds of wood at Drax. They can’t just use all softwoods like Pine either, so there is probably quite a bit of hardwoods mixed in. Mostly scrap, but you can bet there’s Oak in there along with Maple, Hickory, etc. So the statement wasn’t an outright lie, but an incomplete truth. You could also call it a lie of omission, or deceptive wording, if you wish. Either way it’s crazy that they are shipping wood pellets from the US to burn in a UK incinerator and then calling it “green, renewable” power.

In the 19th c. Britain was at the centre of the world economy, self sufficient in energy and a major industrial exporter. Now it imports most of it’s energy and has no industry to speak of and its only export is financial malpractice.

It is hard to determine whether many of the CAGW folks are just ignorant or are in total denial. I am certain they believe everybody else, except those believing in the orthodoxy, are stupid and ignorant. Since many of the so called global warming “scientists” fight so hard to keep their data, methods and materials secret, except for a select group of closest “friends,” I am certain they hate it when real data, analysis and graphs are made public. Man was created by God, of the Bible, to have an innate, free willed, desire to serve Him. If not God, we find something else to serve, such as the creation rather than the creator.

You are in good company. Saul of Tarsus felt the same (about belief in Christ Jesus – God) as you until he had a super natural encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. Jesus blinded him for three days so he could reflect about the encounter. Reference Acts 9.
Christianity is not religion, it is truth, pure, as this world has never seen truth.
“The Case for Christ” by Lee Strobel is a good book about how Lee (a non-believer) set out to prove Jesus was not Christ, but wound up believing He is.
Promotion of CAGW is the scam; belief in it is folly. Belief in Christ Jesus is to be freed from the bonds of fear and mankind’s imbued sin.

Tames McShann
October 8, 2018 8:57 am

Aside from the obvious incorrect assumptions or conclusions made by that climate change researcher, the writer made some incorrect and ignorant assertions himself:

“…moronic social justice warriors and their assault on individual liberty and prosperity.”

First, social justice warriors are not moronic but intelligently seeking social justice, a good thing. I’m one of them and I know. I do a great deal of research on topics I’m interested in. Most sjws do as well, which I can tell from the content of the posts I have read. By contrast, most conservative post rehashed myths and lies heard on Fox News, the Cable News Network with the most recorded falsehoods, which they didn’t research the facts on.

There’s a great deal of social injustice including pollution injustice–like placing toxic waste production facilities and dumps in the poorest areas, where people have the least political clout and information to protect themselves. I don’t know of many, if any dumps and toxic waste production facilities in Westchester NY, Orange Cty. CA and Oakland Cty. MI, the most affluent counties in America.

Second, it’s a totally ignorant straw man argument to claim that liberals or SJWs are “assaulting personal Liberty and prosperity.”

In what way would everyone benefit from destroying Prosperity? Liberals want prosperity for all, not prosperity only for the few and poverty for most. Why isn’t that abundantly clear to the author and other seemingly thick-brained conservatives??

FACT: No one I have ever heard of craves poverty over prosperity! Seriously, do you know anyone who does? Aren’t there are millions of people living below the poverty line who would love to have easy access to food and water and medicine to prevent disease? And pretty cars and nice cell phones and clothing?

Many of those people live in the United States. Did you amazingly informed conservatives know that up to 14 million children are in a situation where they have insecure food sources or are malnourished? That means they’re not sure they’re going to get their next meal or any meal that day or that week. In which the parents have to balance the cost of heat to keep alive in winter with the cost of food. And the entitled millionaires are getting their gigantic tax breaks at the cost of these children’s meals because conservatives falsely call access to basic food and Medicine “entitlements.” So they can take more money from the poor and get their gigantic tax breaks. (Trump added $1 trillion to the national debt as WELFARE mostly to the rich.)

“Assault on personal liberty”?? What’s next, are you going to attack city council members in every locality and the National Highway Traffic Administration for placing speed limits on roads? For making drunk driving illegal?

FACT: Although everyone would like to do as much as we can do to enjoy life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, we all must limit some of what we do when the effects overall hurt others. AGW and coal pollution both fall into this category.

Limiting coal production and pollution, thus limiting global warming, obviously is not assault on personal Liberty, it’s responsibility. Aren’t conservatives and the GOP the “party of personal responsibility???” By abdicating their responsibility to society overall and to the environment upon which we depend, selfish narrow-thinking conservatives reveal their lies and hypocrisy–they want opposite of what they claim.

Responsibilities include making sure your fist doesn’t enter my personal space when you’re swinging. And pollution and climate change caused by humans are both swinging fists that are damaging the environment– thus damaging us because we depend on the environment.

Therefore, the claim that liberals and social justice Warriors are trying to limit your personal Liberty is a ridiculously bankrupt, obviously false argument. At its core, preventing pollution is limiting but but clearly for the greater good of all. Exactly like laws that limit vehicle speeds on roads and what you can do while driving.

Because YOU’RE NOT THE ONLY HUMAN on the planet– no matter how much you bury your head in sand and hope it were true. Your individual actions, adding to every other individual’s actions, collectively impact others. and the environment negatively and positively.

The “assaulting liberty and prosperity” argument is probably made by people so selfish and arrogant, like narcissistic sociopaths and right-wing authoritarians, that they have no clue others have feelings, good intentions and deserve to live as well. Understanding themselves to be evil and selfish, they can’t comprehend someone who wants to do good for others. And this doesn’t mean you’re doing good for others at your own expense, you are also helping yourself. Even sociopath should understand the self-interest inherent in protecting one’s health with a healthy environment.

As with Trump and most corrupt millionaire GOP Republican Congressional sociopaths, people are nothing and profits are everything. People are simply tools to get more profits and influence.

It’s been demonstrated by experiments using Google Glasses that richer people mostly look at things, while poor and middle income people much more often look at people.

Draw your own conclusions from this but certainly it means rich people are mostly interested in things and don’t give a s*** about other people. Unless those people are serving them or can give them something important. Like money.

So who’s the “moron” for not seeing (and a sociopath or narcissist for lying about it) what obviously Liberals and SJWs are saying and working towards??

“The center of the Earth is millions of degrees”. So much for sjw’s and their in depth research on important issues. Algore, the leader of the Warmunists, is a dolt. He is a politician and nothing else, caliing CO2 a dangerous pollutant when there is no replicable PROOF that it is . This is nothing more than a social issue, like banning the sale or possession of alcohol.

“Therefore, the claim that liberals and social justice Warriors are trying to limit your personal Liberty is a ridiculously bankrupt, obviously false argument.”

Tell that to Diamond & Silk. If you don’t know who they are, they are two black women YouTubers that are conservative and Pro Trump. Facebook shadow-banned them. Facebook was eventually forced to admit it, but claimed it was an “honest mistake”. BTW D & S were forced to testify under oath before Congress while Zuckerberg was not.

Since then Google, YouTube and Twitter have both been exposed for censoring conservatives and their opinions.

Do you not consider the Regressive Left trying to control and limit an individual’s constitutional right to free speech? How cannot that not be considered an attack on personal liberty?

Diamond and Silk are a couple of the more savvy political commentators I have seen on tv lately. I’m glad Fox puts them on the air.

Nice post Tames – so perfectly exemplifies the moronic, unintelligent ranting of SJW’s when confronted with a conflicting view to their own – well done. I am assuming you left the ‘sarc’ tag off

“FACT: No one I have ever heard of craves poverty over prosperity! Seriously, do you know anyone who does?”

I think you have misunderstood the claim. The claim is that socialists want an economy controlled by the Socialist Elites (Authoritarian) and that the consequence of socialists taking over the economy will be to plunge that economy into economic ruin, like Venezuela, and make everyone poor.

The Socialist Elites certainly don’t crave poverty for themselves, but if they get in positions of authority they will cause povery for everyone else.

Persuading people to cut down on things they enjoy for the sake of the climate might seem impossible.

That is a complete mischaracterization. They are talking about persuading people to cut down on things necessary for life.

It’s like a slimeball doctor describing a patient, writhing in unbearable pain, as suffering discomfort.

Not only that but people also don’t want to spend 3 days of their vacation driving from Paris to the Mediterranean (stopping to recharge overnights) 1 day on the beach, and 3 days driving back. Hell of a way to spend a week at the beach.

We owe it to our children and grandchildren to resist these totalitarian society modelers and demand PROOF at every turn.

Ah man, this is fantastic.

Not dissimilar to the Grauniad, I really believed The UK to be The Centre Of The Universe.
The Place To Be. What UK did was an example to everyone.
The British Empire lives. And Roolz.

But no! Wrong. Assumptive Fail.
It seems that from reading here, The US of A is The Centre of everywhere and what America does, everyone else must do.
We’re going a long with with the obesity & heart-disease thing but now, especially embarrassing after Maggie Thatcher started the whole climate thing, we have managed to pass that particular buck to someone else.

And after all, it is The Modern Way
Phil Jones – relax, your dog no longer needs to eat homework.
Roger Harrabin – retire to The Maldives, where you always wanted to.
BBC – this will be hard for you but, you can stop your guilt-ridden worry & hand-wringing now.

Not only did we *not* need to employ legions of highly overpaid parasitic lawyers but, The Buck was actually snatched right out of our hands. By a straw man. In America.

Epic. Simply epic
;-D

Well Maggie Thatcher didn’t quite ‘start it’ all. She had a few uppity coal mine unions to deal with and took her cue from the Club of Rome ( epitomized by C of R member Maurice Strong, founder of UNEP and the whole UN/global climate movement). Strong and Maggie knew full well that a big scare was what was needed to control things.

“The common enemy of humanity is man.
In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up
with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming,
water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill. All these
dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through
changed attitudes and behaviour that they can be overcome.
The real enemy then, is humanity itself.“

In 2016 Australia was the largest net exporter of coal (32% of global exports; 389 Mt):

We who grow corn in the area where I live are lamenting the loss of free sulfur to our fields that was provided by our coal burning power plant before the greens shut it down through market manipulation. We now have to pay to have it added at the same time as the anhydrous is disked into the soil.
They continually add costs for us with their “environmental fixes”.

What Mr Barasi calls ‘climate apathy’ is climate common sense.

He’s what? 35 years old? He’s had a privileged education (and probably spent the years between Oxford and Birkbeck sucking on the public teat in the NGO green blob), but he’s still too dim to see that the ramshackle Manmade Climate Change theory is built on circular models run on inadequate and/or manipulated data, or that the beneficiaries are big oil&gas (coal – their main competitor throughout the 20th century, has been seen off in UK in barely 25 years) and the subsidy farmers making profits from environmentally unfriendly, expensive, unreliable, intermittent, rare mineral depleting renewables.

But hey, he must feel at home at the Grauniad.

How Asia Has Become The World’s Manufacturing Hub
Full story here:

My opinions on how Asia became the world’s manf hub:

1) Maurice Strong et al on the deindustrialization of America. Wonder if he was ok if manf moved to Asia instead of going away entirely? Bet its the latter…

2) Pollution regulations/laws, many backed by NGOs who were/are backed by rich families (such as Rockefeller). Wonder if these rich families capitalized on the cheaper labor/higher profits somehow? Bet the answer is yes.

3) Bill Clinton and the DNC received illegal contributions from the communist Chinese government during the 90s, got caught, and had to return them. Before he left office, Clinton switched gears on PNTR and helped pass it. (Republicans also passed it but they passed it for ‘free trade’ reasons. There were no articles saying they were bought off like Clinton apparently was). The end result after Clinton gave them PNTR was the largest ever drop in US manufacturing jobs in recorded US history. We lost millions of good paying manf jobs to mostly China. In addition, we’ve lost millions of other jobs that depended on or supported those manf plants.

That Bill Clinton is still so adored by the left astounds me. It was his admin who got the ball rolling on the high housing prices and the subprime housing bomb that directly led to the great recession (Bush played a role too), he gave away more top secret nuclear weapons plans to the world than all of the last presidents combined (who presided over nukes) and by several times, he decimated our manf base as obvious political payoff, and he’s been accused by 12 women of rape or assault.
