Science study from Hooters: ‘An Ethnography of Breastaurant Masculinity’

This is an actual paper, published in a peer reviewed journal. I wouldn’t call it science, when it’s actually some sort of strange rant like something from a SJW. And what the hell is a “breastaurant”? Hooters maybe? Yep, I had to look it up.

breastaurant is a restaurant that has skimpily-dressed female waiting staff. The term “breastaurant” dates from the early 1990s, around the time that the restaurant chain Hooters became popular in the United States.

So now people are conducting “research” in Hooters.

h/t to Willie Soon.

An Ethnography of Breastaurant Masculinity: Themes of Objectification, Sexual Conquest, Male Control, and Masculine Toughness in a Sexually Objectifying Restaurant

  • Richard Baldwin

The present study is based on a 2-year participant-observer ethnography of a group of men in a “breastaurant” to characterize the unique masculinity features that environment evokes. Currently, whereas some research examines sexually objectifying restaurant environments regarding their impacts upon women in those spaces, no known scholarly attention has been given to men and masculinities in these environments. Through thematic analysis of table dialogue supplemented by brief unstructured interviews, I identify four major and one minor theme of “breastaurant masculinity” as distinctive to that environment. These include sexual objectification, sexual conquest, male control of women, masculine toughness, and (as a minor theme) rationalizations for why men frequent breastaurants. Following recent trends in masculinities research, my study interprets the breastaurant as a type of male preserve that erects a local pastiche hegemony in which these themes gain protected status. It also theorizes that the unique interactive environment of the breastaurant between (mostly) male patrons and attractive female servers who provide heterosexual aesthetic labor to the patrons, primarily in the form of ersatz sexual availability, produces these masculinity features. Given their current rapid expansion and popularity within masculine subcultures, the breastaurant therefore becomes an important site for critical masculinities research. Practice implications are discussed for management and counseling professionals who aim to improve outcomes in social and professional situations for both women and men.

I’m pretty sure this was part of a group of parody studies submitted by a few people who wanted to demonstrate the issues with peer review in social justice academics. One of the other papers involved rape culture in dog walking parks.

Yes, this was one of several recent parodies of politically correct university cultures. Looks like somebody bit. Link and first 3 paragraphs:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/04/arts/academic-journals-hoax.html?emc=edit_th_181005&nl=todaysheadlines&nlid=42439671005

“One paper, published in a journal called Sex Roles, said that the author had conducted a two-year study involving “thematic analysis of table dialogue” to uncover the mystery of why heterosexual men like to eat at Hooters.

Another, from a journal of feminist geography, parsed “human reactions to rape culture and queer performativity” at dog parks in Portland, Ore., while a third paper, published in a journal of feminist social work and titled “Our Struggle Is My Struggle,” simply scattered some up-to-date jargon into passages lifted from Hitler’s “Mein Kampf.”

Such offerings may or may not have raised eyebrows among the journals’ limited readerships. But this week, they unleashed a cascade of mockery — along with a torrent of debate about ethics of hoaxes, the state of peer review and the excesses of academia — when they were revealed to be part of an elaborate prank aimed squarely at what the authors labeled “grievance studies.” “

The girls that work at Hooters often make over 500 bucks a day! Are you jealous? Do you hate women? Maybe just attractive women? Would you like it better if there was a place featuring young “boys/males” for your personal enjoyment ?

This is serious stuff. There is a reason these men eat in those places like there is a reason for striptease clubs or prostitution or porn on the internet.

Not so fast. I seem to recall back in the 80’s or 90’s, a team of Air Force doctors were researching how to rehabilitate people who had suffered upper torso injuries. They proceeded to do the research at topless strip clubs in Las Vegas. In particular, they wanted to discover how the ladies were able to counter-rotate the mammaries. Not sure if the study was ever published.

Title: An Ethnography of Breastaurant Masculinity: Themes of Objectification, Sexual Conquest, Male Control, and Masculine Toughness in a Sexually Objectifying Restaurant

By

Richard Baldwin, Ph.D., Gulf Coast State College

Journal: Sex Roles

Status: Accepted, Published

Thesis: That men frequent “breasturants” like Hooters because they are nostalgic for patriarchal dominance and enjoy being able to order attractive women around. The environment that breastaurants provide for facilitating this encourages men to identify sexual objectification and sexual conquest, along with masculine toughness and male dominance, with “authentic masculinity.” The data are clearly nonsense and conclusions drawn from it are unwarranted by it. (NB. One reviewer did raise concerns about the rigor of the data)

Purpose: To see if journals will publish papers that seek to problematize heterosexual men’s attraction to women and will accept very shoddy qualitative methodology and ideologically-motivated interpretations which support this.

You are correct Wayne.

STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics. People with STEM educations do most or all of the truly useful intellectual work in the world – they advance society by expanding and applying the boundaries of human knowledge.

Then there are the other courses — non-STEM, where you can send your stupider, lazier kids to get a useless university degree in a useless field, and after they graduate they can get a useless job in the service sector or with government, where they can while away their years doing nothing of value and voting Democrat or other socialist clones, while deluding themselves thinking they are actually superior to people with a real education in the STEM fields.

Many of these non-STEM fields are actually so counterproductive that society would be better off if they were simply eliminated. The only downside to eliminating the Arts Faculties in most universities would be “where to send your stupider kids to get a fake education”.

Perhaps a better alternative to an Arts degree would be those “buy-a-degree” mills where you can purchase a fake degree for a few hundred dollars – right up to a Ph.D! Think of all the time and money you and your kids would save, and they could actually get a job four or five years earlier, and learn some real skills, like how to flip burgers and say “Do you want fries with that?”

The greatest problem is when these dummies vote – they are easily conned by sociopathic politicians, and fanatically accept false notions like global warming alarmism, extreme gender bias (aka “just believe the lying woman”) and other imbecilic falsehoods that are concocted by sociopaths who seek wealth and power.

Democracy and freedom is being hijacked by leftists who pander to the stupidest people in our society. For this reason, efforts to “Get Out the Vote” are harmful. Society would benefit if there were billboards at election time with a few skill-testing questions, and the message “If you are too stupid to answer these questions, stay home! You are ‘way too stupid to vote.” If all those people with fake degrees were to stay home on voting day, that would be their greatest lifelong contribution to the wellbeing of society.

This is why the world is so FUBAR.

THE DUNNING-KRUGER EFFECT
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect

The psychological phenomenon of illusory superiority was identified as a form of cognitive bias in Kruger and Dunning’s 1999 study “Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One’s Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments”. The identification derived from the cognitive bias evident in the criminal case of McArthur Wheeler, who robbed banks with his face covered with lemon juice, which he believed would make it invisible to the surveillance cameras. This belief was based on his misunderstanding of the chemical properties of lemon juice as an invisible ink.

THE DUNNING-KRUGER EFFECT – SIMPLIFIED

Stupid people are too stupid to know they are stupid.

Smart people tend to assume, at least initially, that stupid people are as smart as they are.

THE DUNNING-KRUGER EFFECT – SOLUTIONS AND ANTIDOTES

If someone believe in dangerous runaway manmade global warming, they are either deliberately lying or they are stupid.

If someone says that “the science is settled”, they are deliberately lying or they are stupid.

If someone says that “consensus makes science”, they are deliberately lying or they are stupid.

If someone just says “just believe the woman”, then they are deliberately lying or they are stupid.

If some says that all women are good and all men are bad, then they are deliberately lying or they are stupid.

If someone believes left-wing politics and all their blatant falsehoods, they are either deliberately lying or they are stupid.

The apparent erosion of traditional science is centred around the humanities in our universities. The consequences of it are, simply, too horrible to contemplate.

The pdf (above) is hysterical, astounding, outlandish and horrifying on many levels! The submitted papers were created to point out the profound lack of scholarship and social validity in what they aptly call ‘grievance studies’. Grievance Studies are a widening academic culture devoted to raising ‘victimhood’ to the highest virtue in our society.

Victimhood is a societal disease that weakens and slowly destroys individuals, groups and whole societies that adopt it. It is arguably the leading cause of all human misery, and the seed of all human conflict.

There are other cultures that have followed this path before, always resulting in the near destruction of the people. It is hardly surprising that the authors of these fake studies lifted sections of Mein Kampf to flush out their papers, changing words like ‘Jew’ to “white men’, but basically leaving the arguments as they are. The reviewers comments, often praising these works, are horrifying, often claiming that the authors had great ideas, but didn’t go far enough!

Now I am not wishing to invoke Goodwin here and call academics engaged in grievance studies Nazis. They are not. But they are embracing the same basic philosophical and intellectual mindset, and if left unchecked, will result in a new holocaust. This time it will be called ‘euthanasia’, and old, white men will be going to camp, to pay for a lifetime of ‘privilege’.

Several decades ago now, there was a truck stop on the way from Sacramento to Williams called “Pantyhose Junction.” It featured decent food (initially) decent coffee consistently, and a wait staff all female and clad in very short shorts, a tight, white t-shirt, and most of whom wore wedding rings (and were in fact married and making ends meet in an increasingly difficult agricultural landscape). I asked a couple about the costume and they remarked that most of the “guys” were really decent, and if any of them caused trouble, the rest would serve up some lumps and toss them out. They (the staff) thought the job was one of the safest they could have – and it paid really well.

Routine struggle for relevance in academia. Typical topic for cultural anthropology. I once knew a man who researched NASCAR because it was “fresh ground, outside the realm of prior academic consideration.”

There are only so many useful topics to research, and most have been studied to death (across many generations now; 100 years or more). However, professors must publish to get a job and move up. Academics apply new names to very old, very simple concepts to make a name for themselves = sophistry.

Those in the system are well aware of the waste, using terms such as “publish or perish” and splitting one topic into several papers as “least publishable units.” Longer resumes equal bragging rights and a competitive edge.

Much of this would go away with a different economic model for the university system, but it has tended to get a pass. And the main clients (old children/young adults) are not yet sophisticated enough to challenge the waste, fraud, and abuse. However, this may well be transformed over the next few decades with the rise of Jordan Peterson, Jonathan Haidt, and the Intellectual Dark Web.

Before mobile (cell) phones were invented human brains were performing their natural evolutionary functions. Excess microwave radiation from these devices has ‘burned’(destroyed) numerous connections between synapses that are essential to neuronal function, and in doing so forever altered brain cognitive process relating to the judgement, reasoning, emotional and volitional acts of making a conscious choice or decision, which now has become known as ‘political correctness’ in short.

“Guys like girls?” — how sexist ! Even thinking such a thing is intellectual rape.

Nobody holding to this attitude would be fit for the Supreme Court.

Guys liking girls is a white, Christian, male-dominant relic of the past. Having this mentality today marginalizes and demeans those who prefer to be unidentified or fluid, in this respect. Being unidentified or fluid is more normal, now that we, as a culture, have evolved in the post-modern world.

There are no differences, hence, no need for standards, let alone accountability for holding to standards, which is a racist attitude. Physiological variations at the sexual level are irrelevant — it’s the “person underneath” that counts. The mind is separate from the eeeeeeeeeeeeeevil body. The spirit determines the person. If you don’t believe in the spirit, then you are eeeeeeeeeeeevil, … probably a potential child molester.

Liking women is just too damn taboo, … IF you are a guy.

Now, if you are another woman, then this is perfectly fine. Guys need to stick to liking their own kind.

Gay is THE way.

This way, nobody is threatened. The population thins. Less stress on people. Less stress on natural resources. Fewer children being born to be molested. Less worry about “thinking of the children”.

Women can build THEIR own cities. Men can build theirs. What a great world it can be without male/female attraction. /sarc rant

… “erects a local pastiche hegemony”? I mean, come on, not only is that total BS, but also it clearly indulges in the gratuitous use of the word, “erect”, in a context where a more familiar use is clearly associated.

The word, “pastiche”, is not even [an] adjective, and yet this is how it is used to modify the other noun, “hegemony”, following it. It is a forced use of a noun to modify another noun, in order to give the false appearance of learned writing. Again, it is BS use of language for a BS study.

I am definitely applying for a grant to study this in much more close detail. The breastaurant represents an opportunity to study elevated CO2 levels, and the rate of consumption of oxygen in a closed defined area that can be controlled and deeply examined through the visual cortex. Specifically, by measuring humidity levels in relation to CO2 and O2, along with testing of temperatures before and after consumption of food/alcohol and as time proceeds over the night just how much the ‘carbon’ levels go Up, oxygen is depleted, relative humidity and temperatures increase…this should give a very precise picture.

I have read the book, as well as his other autobiography whose name escapes me. Among his other antics (if my porous mind recalls correctly), he waited too long to reserve a hotel room when receiving his Nobel, and ended up staying at a facility that normally rented rooms by the hour. Evidently, both he and the, um, working staff, enjoyed the situation immensely. He also testified for a local t-bar that some were trying to shut down. When asked if he didn’t agree that it violated community standards, he replied (perhaps not exactly in these words), “I’m not exactly sure what the community standards are, but I’ve seen most of the men in the community in there.”

If you haven’t read his books, you owe it to yourself to do so.

Bit of a shame it’s a fake, but still nice to see Monty Python is alive and well

In actual fact, it *is* a lot to do with my research into AGW which, some have gathered, involves me throwing myself around the country in my little VW Caddy. Burning dat durty deezal while I still can.

It goes like:
Whatever Climate Change there is going on is primarily due to soil erosion. UHI fits in there also but cities are very small compared to everywhere. Its just a shame that’s where the thermometers are.

Soil erosion being the removal/disappearance of the soil itself (think brown/yellow/orange floodwater) but also the gradual disappearance of the micro-nutrients from within the soil.
So, how to record/measure that?

By looking for the effect the resulting lack of micro-nutrients has on the critters that eat the food grown in eroding soil.
That’s us basically.

Vitamin A deficiency anyone.
Also how chromium is implicated in diabetes, iodine in thyroid/growth disorders, selenium possibly in cancer but certainly as I knew about its shortage = White Muscle Disease in cattle.
Also copper – plenty to do with the immune system, and how many immune disorders have we got now 200+ maybe.

Hence my ‘research’ = visiting lots of places and assessing how ‘rich’ they are. Just look at the houses, how well kept the city centre, the cars people drive etc etc. You know what I mean.

Then look at the people.
In part this follows my experience of keeping livestock in that they have an innate knowledge of what to eat. If they are missing a particular nutrient, they may start eating dirt, or thistles, or twigs/leaves out of trees. They sometimes did do the weirdest things.

OK – assume we have something similar inside us. I assert constantly that children do and why they hate vegetables.
A brilliant one was from a black-white newsreel of the first banana-boat arriving in England after the rationing of WW2. A small child who’d never ever seen a banana was given one and proceeded to start eating the whole thing. Peel and all.
The news reader then encouraged everyone to laugh (as the child’s mother snatched the fruit away) by scolding the child about ‘peeling the thing first’
And what are we told now?
That banana skin/peel is probably even more nutritious that what’s inside.

Back to the rich people – they will eat what their bodies tell them to eat. And they will do that because they can afford to. They can afford to look after themselves without really realising it.

The poor people cannot. They will be stuck eating the same old same old cheap as chips rubbish all the time.
And there you see it. Girls are short and fat. They are always bad tempered with their small children and partners. They will have red blotchy skin. Lank hair. Permanently engrossed inside their mobile phones – lacking self confidence. The High Street will be full of ‘Beauty Salons’ If they have jobs, they will not be ‘brain surgeons’, shall we say.

The cheapest of the cheap food is always the carbohydrate.

Honesty time question, which 2 countries seem to be ‘most obsessed’ by Climate Change.
Make your best guess then click the link…..

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45559594

So it is AGW. Anthropogenic – yes= Human caused BUT,
It Is All In The Mind.
Climate Change is not a real thing. It is the b@stard child of fevered, nutrient deprived brains & minds.

And a good place to research that is where the people meet and interact= pubs, cafes and restaurants.

I generally avoid Hooters since I don’t like fried food, but on the two occasions I went as part of a group I was very impressed by the quality of the service. Other restaurants could learn a lot from their hiring. The women there generally exude emotional warmth, good health and a service mentality, something that is increasingly missing from most restaurants (at least in the US) and much of society. If someone feels they are in a demeaning role or are unhappy you can sense it, and I sensed just the opposite from the servers there. Maybe my sample size was too small but I was impressed with the people they are able to attract to work there.

While this is fantastic and I suppose it takes more than one nail to seal up a coffin, Alan Sokal made it quite clear precisely how fatuously unhinged from any semblance of reality the academy had become back in 1996 when he convinced a journal to publish a paper in which he argued that discoveries in physics confirmed the postmodern nature of reality and that gravity was thus just another one of those pesky social constructions…which if you think about it, means so is climate change! Well, replication is an important part of research. It is also important to examine whether there may be some unrecognized confounding variables that may cause misleading results. To that endeavor: there are two other establishments in my area (alas, I have been to neither), Twin Peaks and the Tilted Kilt, which offer similar dining environments.

Obviously, in the name of science this research needs to be replicated in these other locations to determine if the results are applicative to all such establishments, or exclusively to Hooters. Perhaps the studies could examine the economic, social, political, sexual/gender identification, racial, and religious differences of both the clients and workers of these establishments to discern a pattern of similarities and differences in these geographically distributed establishments. Clearly, many years of research are necessary, and we should gird our loins to face the task ahead of us. Where can we get the necessary grants?

October 7, 2018 10:07 am

I think someone should do a serious grant application to further this research, … just to see if a grant would be awarded for it. I suspect it would.

If you think this is inappropriate, then you don’t see the flaming absurdities taking place in the soft ‘sciences’, much of it funded with your tax dollars. Derision, mockery, sarcasm, and lampooning of those journals and their published research is entirely deserved. If you don’t like the nature of the topic, or the obvious mockery, perhaps your complaint should be with the journal that published the ‘research’.

Leered at? Funny you should write that. In today’s Daily Mail is this article:

“More than a third of school girls have been sexually harassed while wearing their uniform, survey finds”

“Children’s charity Plan International UK polled 1,004 girls aged 14 to 21 and 35 per cent reported being groped, stared at, catcalled or wolf-whistled while wearing their uniform in public.“

So just staring (which I believe connotes something less offensive than leering) is now considered sexual harassment by some.

The question that needed to be asked to put this in proper context was, “Have you ever deliberately worn your uniform in a way that would encourage boys or men to stare, catcall, or wolf-whistle at you?” I think the ‘yes’ response would be more that 35% (and those who did but failed to get the attention they were seeking are probably still upset).
