Hilarious! @weatherchannel reporter fakes intensity of #HurricaneFlorence wind – gets caught

You can’t make this stuff up. The Weather Channel typically sends a reporter to hurricane landfalls to file live reports. Hurricane Florence is no exception. However, in this case although it appears in the video the reporter can barely stand up in the wind, but when the camera zooms out, his fakery is revealed.

h/t to Ronnie Rogers via Facebook

Update: Attemptng to save face, TWC made a statement to BuzzFeed about the fiasco:

“It’s important to note that the two individuals in the background are walking on concrete, and Mike Seidel is trying to maintain his footing on wet grass, after reporting on-air until 1:00 a.m. ET this morning and is undoubtedly exhausted,” the network said.

Update2:

Here is a better video.

How dumb does the WC have to be to put their reporters out there in danger (if it were real) in the first place? I hope they have great insurance coverage for their employees. I have always laughed at the fact that the “reporters” are warning people to stay inside, seek shelter – – whatever – – and yet they’re out there on some beach with the wind practically knocking them over. Complete stupidity. Yeah, in this case it looks like a pretty made-up job.

I will say this about the media, if they have to create a bit of fiction to force many people to say “gee, it really is bad out there, maybe we should evacuate”, then more power to them (The media). What I will always call the media and the AGW alarmist is that these types of events are within statistical norms and so are our temperatures. The earth seems to be moving into a rapid cool down and the ice sheets at both poles bare this out, yet I hear no news on it because all the environmental wacos are will harping about global warming.

I gave up on TWC a long time ago. However, before I gave it up they had way more sane hurricane coverage than our local news. I guess those days are gone…

A while back a hurricane headed for us button hooked away overnight. I paraphrase but the reporter was standing next to a storm grate telling us that if it had rained there could be serious flooding here. I guess if they’ve got you out live you’ve got to say something.

The very essence of ‘fake news’. And you wonder why President Trump has dined out on that phrase. It resonates at some level with everyone, not just those ‘deplorables’ who happen to live in ‘the rust belt’ but anyone with half a brain or more even Democrat voters.

The endless fakery by the a/v news media whether at the level of the buffoon in question or just the overacting bobble head we see at every ‘deadly’ or ‘catastrophic’ event around the world just eats away at their credibility.

On a separate note –
Warmer SST are supposed to make hurricanes more intense.

Early this week, it was reported that the SST of the atlantic waters off the NC and Virginia coasts was abnormally high while the waters to the south were normal.

Interesting that hurricane florence fizzled from a CAT 4/5 hurricane to barely a CAT 1 when it hit the warmer waters.

Gary Pearse
Reply to  joe - the non climate scientist
September 14, 2018 2:17 pm

I dont buy that it was a Cat 4. Remember they changed the way of measuring wind speeds for classification for Hurricane Harvey from near the slower base of the hurricane where all the damage is done, to aircraft measurement which is from the top. They are supposed to calculate the speed from the aircraft measurement, not use it directly.

We are often branded conspiracy theorists but what does one do when inundated in biggest, perhaps the very first, global conspiracy. They are more constrained with their lies at landfall because there are sensors at the correct height maintained in all hurricane prone areas. Thats why they have to do these clown acts for the camera instead of simply reporting the “data”.

Gary Pearse
Reply to  Gary Pearse
September 14, 2018 2:29 pm

Here we had a supposed Cat 4/5 hurricane, speeding up into warmer waters and it hits the coast as a Cat1? Some 36 hours ago, the imagery showed an unraveling of the usually tightly compressed spiral arms that make up the central cylinder of the cane and the eye pressure was only ~10mb below standard 1000mb normal surface air pressure. This wasnt much above a tropical depression. I hope Joe Bastardi weighs in. Were there any deaths? What damage was done.

joe- the non climate scientist
Reply to  Gary Pearse
September 14, 2018 2:52 pm

my only point was the theory is hurricanes will be more intense due to the increase in SST (at least that is what the models show). Yet, the hurricane fizzled when it entered the warmer waters.

Granted, there are a vast array of other factors that affect hurricanes, just noting that one of the warmists pet theories didnt hold true based on the empirical evidence.

Reply to  joe- the non climate scientist
September 14, 2018 6:08 pm

Water temp is little more than a precondition.
Wind shear and dry air are death to hurricanes no matter the water temp.
Measuring water temp will not predict number or location or intensity or much of anything.
This is why tropical systems, while rare, have formed even in January in water that is under the supposed cut-off temp.

Not just that. It used to be hurricanes weren’t declared cat 4 until 135 MPH. In 2012 they changed that to 130 MPH. Harvey was NOT a cat 4, nor was Irma at U.S. landfall. Both storms were at 130 MPH. Rich Johnson pointed out on twitter that there was no observable cat 4 structural damage in Texas, nor have I seen observable wind observations consistent with that in either Texas or Florida.

While I understand your point I have looked over most of the Harvey landfall area. I have also seen much of the damaged area of Camille, Rita, a little of Katrina and Ike, and several others. A NWS report, link around somewhere, concluded that the highest winds, on the Lamar and Blackjack Peninsulas were not measured. Two portable units were flattened.

Hurricanes are all different and maybe idiosyncratic. A lot of the damage was preventable and predictable, expected by old timers for decades, but it was quite a storm, well near the top.

As I understand it, there was no depth to that warmth, so there was a low cyclone energy potential.

As a hurricane passes it churns up the sea to a considerable depth, so if the ocean warmth is shallow, it will cool very quickly due mixing. It might be nice to see a SST map following the hurricane, which should show a cool trail.

The better question is, why did so many so-called experts, predict it would? Ocean surface temperature is only one factor in determining the strength of a hurricane, and even then, the temperature difference from out in the middle of the ocean to near the shore was not that great. They made it seem like it was a huge difference by showing it in lurid red hues, which made it seem like a no-brainer. In reality, it was the experts that weren’t using their brains.

Reply to  Paul Penrose

The so-called experts with help of today’s best supercomputers and near-real time data inputs cannot accurately predict the intensity and path of one hurricane 48 hours into the future, yet the—ahem—consensus of this category of “scientific” professionals is that their modeling can accurately predict Earth average global temperature, whatever that means, 100 years in the future to +/- 0.1 C precision.

Because it never was a Cat 4 to start with. They have wind sensors on land in these places so it’s harder to lie – except to add 5knots to maintain Hurricane category, but out to sea its a free-for-all…They talked about 80ft waves 2 days ago but admitted satellites are confounded by the heavy rains and that they were probably 40 ft waves, neither of which seems to have come ashore. it started ingesting dry air & that started cooling the core of the storm & caused it to start weakening. You can see the effect when the core clouds start to break up & thin out. That is dry air evaporating the clouds. Tropical cyclones don’t like that.

Not only that the amount of energy required to support a Cat 4 storm is enormous and the shallow water however warm it was could not supply that level of energy. So as soon as the storm got to the continental shelf its energy supply started to reduce quite markedly. This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

Has anyone ever done a study of the subsurface currents caused by a hurricane? I would imagine an advection/convection circulation effect in the water as the water cooled by evaporation and falling rain sinks to be replaced by the warmer deeper water. If the depth of this subsurface effect was known then it could be possible to forecast the impact of shallower water on hurricanes.

Because there were three other cyclones active in the same basin, almost upstream that sure the total airflow available to Florence. Plus a larger cat 5 hurricane east of the Philippines at the same time, all responding to the same troposphere pressure rise. Cyclone activity drops troposphere pressure.

Look at the Arctic sea ice area over the same period. When Florence wained sea ice area stopped declining as fast as less atmosphere was displaced into the Arctic.

Rapid intensification is caused by restrictions to seasonally displaced atmosphere and tropical evaporation. That’s the short answer.

As I understand it, there was no depth to that ocean warmth, so there was a low cyclone energy potential.

As a hurricane passes it churns up the sea to a considerable depth, so if the ocean warmth is shallow, it will cool very quickly due mixing. It might be nice to see a SST map following the hurricane, which should show a cool trail.

And the further north the storm went, the greater the Coriolis force. That is why all cyclones widen and the peak windstrengths reduce, as they drift north.

Atlantic depressions that hit the UK are as powerful as hurricanes, but they are more spread out with lower peak winds, than tropical cyclones, due to higher coriolis.

My son pointed out a flag from a live broadcast that clearly indicated the force and change of intensity of the wind. This is not something reporters are likely to notice and fake.

I hope someone, with a clear memory, who has been living on the North Carolina coast for the past 60 to 70 years will tell us about the worst storms he or she remembers and how the present storm compares.

Don’t need to be that old or even to live in the OBX. In 2003, Isabel came ashore right at the Outer Banks as a Cat2 hurricane, and proceeded to cut an inlet clean across the island north of Hatteras village. Washed a bunch of local landmarks away, and people reported a storm surge that came up to 2nd story windows.

I don’t think Flo is quite going to reach that standard.

Latitude, just watched your clip & the reporter clearly said the wind is gusting at 60 mph.
Why is he bouncing around? Well, the word “gusting” is a clue. Gusty winds when you are trying to stand still mean you are continually bracing yourself against the wind, only to find it suddenly drops off – & you “fall” into the hole in the wind. Then another gust hits, & you get pushed by it until you can re-brace yourself. Then the cycle repeats, & repeats. The reporter may be over-dramatizing, but it seems that many commenters here do not have personal experience of standing in strong, gusty winds.

Nope. You’re making excuses for the Fake News you want to support. A gust then, if it actually has hit the man standing, leaves off its pressure suddenly – the man HAS TO straighten (or relax pushing) for a moment (or he/she/it) falls forward into the wind! – then the next gust comes. NONE of those instinctive muscle reactions takes place in the man, the relaxed walkers behind him, nor the are the gusts “visible” in the water at their feet. (Been there, fought those winds.)

Sorry ray, but watch the video, you can see the direction the wind is blowing from the movement of the grass and other objects in the camera’s view. He’s standing in the wrong direction relative to the direction of the wind for the wind gusts to be affecting him like that. And those same wind gust magically miss the two passersby in the background (who are having no difficulties in walking around) and magically don’t affect anything else in the cameras view.

There is another explanation. In any wind in an urban area there are various turbulent and venturi effects. So a relatively gentle wind can be magnified if you are in just the right spot. I would suspect that the reporter found ‘just the right spot’ to make a report about the wind – possibly the only spot in the area that had any real wind strength – and then stood on sloping ground to improve the optics.

There are some places between high rise buildings in cities that pedestrians can be blown off their feet by wind increased by the venturi effect between the buildings with the ambient wind being relatively low.

Also, it does not hold water as an excuse.
There is concrete one step away from where he is, plus the guys in the background walk on grass too.
Also note Mike is saying that the gust he is in is as bad as it has been.
He is clearly faking.
Note he picks up and object and tosses it in the air…it went about 20 feet and hit the ground. Not exactly astounding.
On top of everything else, he is smart enough to know if it was too windy to stand, it is too dangerous to be in a place with tree branches and shingles blowing around.
I went outside last year in Irma about an hour or two before the eye wall passed over my house, and it was way windier than were he is. I did not dare let myself get exposed in the open…I could have been killed in an instant by any number of objects, like branches shingles…or anything else travelling at 60 mph.
Sheet metal would slice your throat, a branch could spear your to your heart or jam into your eye…and at any moment something could fly along.
And I can tell you…in a really strong storm, leaves are blowing off trees.
If he is standing in the open, it is not more than a tropical storm wind, if that.
How did the wind speed defining a storm even get decided on?
I suspect it has to do with just the question of blowing people around: Tropical storm force winds are the point at which the wind can physically move a person, and winds above hurricane force will be enough lift them off the ground. YMMV depending on weight and surface area, but if you are not being knocked around, it is not 60mph.

Not even the weather channel was willing to trout out that nonsense when they trotted out the nonsense about him being on the grass (you can see one of the guys in the background also walking on the grass without difficulty).

so either
1) the weather channel was “faking it” as everyone watching the video can see for themselves (in which case you are the one pedaling BS)
or
2) the weather channel is intentionally putting old and frail people into situations that could be harmful to their wellbeing.

not a good look for the weather channel in either case.

They have atrributed 5 deaths to the storm including one froa heart attack. SO if you have a heart attack while a hurricane is hanging ariound, it gets blamed?

“SO if you have a heart attack while a hurricane is hanging ariound, it gets blamed?”

Yup; the idea is that if there hadn’t been a storm, he wouldn’t have been working, or stressing.

It’s like that everywhere. Several firefighters have been killed in the recent California wildfires. They weren’t fighting the fires, but they were driving on the freeways TO the fire zones. Still counts as a fire-related death. Because if there hadn’t been a fire, they would have been home in bed, or watching TV or something.

By that method of accounting, we have to subtract the number of fatal car wrecks that do not occur because everyone is hunkered down and most are off the roads.
Roughly three people per state per day are killed in car wrecks.
So anything under that is a net savings of lives.

So if President Trump is somehow responsible for Hurricane Florence, perhaps then he was responsible for the recent ten years of diminished US hurricane activity too? Impressive.

Eye of tropical storm Florence is now on the coast of South Carolina. It moves to the west at a speed of just 7 km / h. The wind is blowing at speeds up to 100 km / h.

More Fake News….. They just cannot help themselves. They are so used to manipulating the images we see and the discussions we get to hear…. But now with the Internet we can expose their falsehoods and deceit, discover the facts for ourselves or send their slip ups viral…. Which is why they want to Censor us and regulate the Internet. They want their “Power over the Narrative” back.

Well they are never going to get that “Power” back as long as a Free American Society reigns…. I was going to say as “long as free Western society reigns”, but too many free Western societies have given up their freedoms to an entrenched political class and the Welfare state.

“As Super Typhoon Mangkhut continues to sweep across the island of Luzon in the Philippines, it appears that the massive eye of the storm has collapsed in on itself. Even after making landfall and losing its eye though, the storm is still a massive Category-5 strength, shooting out rain, thunder, and lighting across thousands of square miles. In other words, if Hurricane Florence was Loki, joyfully spreading disaster and chaos, then Mangkhut is definitely Thor. Or, maybe it’s simply the Hulk. Actually, it’s more like a typhoon angel and a mutant pirate missing an eye had a baby, that baby was an avenging pirate/angel, then the angel baby grew up, it exposed itself to gamma radiation, gained incredible size and strength, stole Thor’s hammer, and used it to attack the Philippines.”

September 15, 2018 2:07 am

If no one already commented, he’s bracing the wrong direction to the wind. The wind is coming from right to left and he’s braced for a left to right wind. Another reason I stopped watching TWC.

The Weather Channel’s culture is one of deceptively hyping weather events for ratings and politics.
The reporter is just a willing part of his employer’s culture of deception and corruption.

hunter
September 15, 2018 2:29 am

The reporter lied about the wind speed as well, claiming that the wind speed was over 60mph when it was actually around 35.
What a useless channel TWC has become, all over the desire to scare people about the weather and climate.

Funny clip. After a quick search he seems to have resisted the cAGW bandwagon otherwise. Pretty impressive after 25 years in the network. I’m giving Mike Seidel the benefit of the doubt – gusts do throw trash around. Same weatherman during Hurricane Nate:

Gusts do not throw trash around?
That seems to be the opposite of what I have observed.
Rapid changes in wind speed have a greater tendency to lift objects and hurls them than steady wind.

Mike Seidel’s movements in this clip are most certainly “gesticulations”:

gesticulation – Wiktionary
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/gesticulation
Noun. gesticulation (countable and uncountable, plural gesticulations) The act of gesticulating, or making gestures to aid expression of thoughts, sentiments or passion. A gesture; a motion of the body or limbs when speaking, or in representing action or passion, and enforcing arguments and sentiments.
‎English · ‎Noun

Are they justified? In a “religious” sense, yes. Climatism is a religion, and Seidel has apparently taken holy orders as one of its priests. He is seen here delivering a sermon on “The End is Near”.

It seems to me that if you were trying to hold your position in a strong wind, you might want to turn your back into it, less chance of debris/raindrops hitting you in the face.
And FWIW, I’ve worked outside all day in strong winds, it wears you out just trying to keep your balance.

If the wind is strong enough to knock you around, leaning away from it will make it easier to be knocked over.
We naturally lean into forces which push against us.
And looking away from strong wind in dangerous situations is just dumb…I think you want to see it if something is flying towards your head and body.

I think the biggest take from the video on Update 2 is the posted wind speed and gusts in the upper left corner.
Too many people think the wind that is being shown is a hurricane. As the video shows that wind is only 29 mph. So many people do not understand how powerful 74+ mph winds really are.

Reply to  Tom in Florida
September 15, 2018 1:19 pm

Force is proportional to the square of the velocity, a 29 mph wind is about 15% of a hurricane force wind.
It takes 40 MPH to push a person at all, unless you are on roller skates or something.

Reply to  Tom in Florida

Doing the math, a 40 mph minimal tropical storm wind is almost twice as forceful as a 29 mph wind.

Haven’t taken the time to read all comments but it’s clear that the guy has his back to the wind while his posture makes it seem he’s facing (and bracing) it — note the direction of the plants bending with the wind in the sign planter nearby.

Another guy (on FOX I think) stood up, extending his upper body through the sunroof of a moving car (side and background revealing the movement without showing any part of the car), making it seem as though the relative wind was the REAL wind! When the floor director signals ‘you’re on’, YOU’RE ON! (story or no story — make it up if you have to).

Everyone in this thread is wrong about what’s happening in the video, clearly the green screen operator loaded the wrong background video, had the proper video been loaded we would have all been duped into thinking Florence came ashore as a cat 9 hurricane and he would have been leaning in the right direction as the cars, trucks and freight trains flew past him ;0)

September 16, 2018 9:47 am

Look at the grass and the object blowing past in the background. They’re blowing from right to left. He is struglling AGAINST a wind that’s blowing from left to right. WTF! Another example of fake news.

September 16, 2018 10:06 am

When I look at that video, I notice the predominant direction in which the wind is blowing — it’s blowing towards the reporter’s BACK (from right to left). But the way he is bracing himself suggests that the wind should be blowing from his front (from left to right). His back leg is behind him, and he is leaning forward, which is a stance that you would take to brace against a force coming from your FRONT, but he is bracing opposite from the way you would brace against a wind blowing from his back.

As for the statement in his defense, that’s a load.

He should have faced in the opposite direction, but that would have put the rain blowing into his face, and we couldn’t have that, could we.
