MSNBC Host: climate change news is a “ratings killer”

This is hilarious, but true, especially when you look at the most recent Gallup Poll that shows many Americans just don’t treat climate change as an issue of interest anymore. Google trends confirms this too:

But when MSNBC admits to it, the disinterest becomes, er, palpable:

Source: https://twitter.com/chrislhayes/status/1021759145425489920

Later in the thread, Hayes says this:

Well, that space for wildfires linked to climate change just shrunk, bigly:

“Global area burned appears to have overall declined over past decades, and there is increasing evidence that there is less fire in the global landscape today than centuries ago.”

They just need to double down. Instead of people’s cars threatening the planet, why not the galaxy? Or the universe itself? How ’bout our energy use is choking God himself?

Seeing that the public is not interested, doesn’t tell they weren’t unsuspecting. When you predict things and they don’t happen, most don’t get on the bandwagon.
And then, the fires in Greece is just weather, not climate. They’ve happened before. If I remember, the 1990’s?

While that one works on the young, who have no experience/memory that stretches far enough back to know it’s bunk, those that are older and can remember the past tend to see it for the nonsense that it is. Thing is, as time moves on, those that are young get older and they will remember what it was like now and eventually realize that they were fed a pack of lies. Just as those growing up in the 70s remember the lies of “the coming ice age/global cooling”. Which is why “climate change” doesn’t do well in the rating and likely never will.

Climate-change drivel is antithetical to getting more eyes on the adds.

Okay now, does global warming scare in the media have a seasonality to it? There should be a media watch group story metric to verify this. Such seasonality would indicate opportunism rather than sane public policy issue debate. Oh I forgot, the advocacy groups self-declared the debate ended along with their Obama puppet.

Reply to  ResourceGuy

I think the problem is that severe weather events are not seasonal. Blizzards in winter, tornadoes in the spring, wild fires in the summer, and hurricanes in the summer and fall. What you might correlate is scare stories versus weather-related disasters. You will see a bump after any disaster, but when you have a long, quiet weather period the stories die off.

The red line/blue line converging graph confirms what I’ve been predicting for many years: people are getting doomsday fatigue. When I was a kid 50 years ago, everyone was tearing their hair out about thermonuclear war turning earth into a barren sheet of glass virtually overnight. The bombs are still there, but hardly anyone worries about them anymore.

Imminent ruin is relentlessly predicted, fails to arrive, and even pessimists grow weary. It’s not too surprising when you stop to think about it. Climate alarmists have been trying to panic the natives with scenarios of 1.6° rise per century, but it’s only a matter of time before the hoi polloi notice that temperature varies by 15° – 20° from day to night, and 40° from summer to winter.

“1.6° by the time my grandchildren are 90? Is anyone going to notice that?”

Don’t worry, though. There will always be NEW! IMPROVED! doomsday scenarios to capture the imaginations of the apocalyptically inclined: GMO crabgrass smothering the grain belts of the world, resulting in mass famine; new, more virulent influenza with a mortality rate of 50%; AIDS mutating into something you can catch by shaking hands; all the national armies and private gun owners of the world going berserk simultaneously. (There are trillions of bullets out there, you know, more than enough to kill everyone several times over.)

News editors desperate for ratings increases will browbeat their staffs, “How will we frighten the peasants next? I want you to get out there and beat the bushes. Reach out and scare someone!”

Apparently, those who have preceeded us may have actually had wisdom to pass on to us.

Sigh.

If only we had a way to capture the wisdom of our forebearers so we could avoid repeating silly mistakes…

Like, I don’t know, if we had a method for taking the words that wise people speak, and creating some type of technology, or system, to represent those words in way that people who weren’t there to hear them being spoken could still receive that wisdom. Perhaps we could take the words and find a way to represent them in something permanent, like stone…or something.

I don’t know, I’m just brainstorming here.

Probably just a crazy idea.

Who would even bother to look at these words of wisdom from our elders anyway…

The “opportunities” in climate change studies are decidedly for sub-par students. Those who have the activist passion or can generate it in order to get a paycheck and lack any scientific integrity or real curiousity. That is the only explanation for the endless stream of poor quality papers on the subject.
The entire field is an embarrassment to science. Long past time that other fields weighed in to correct the excesses.

Bruce Ploetz
July 26, 2018 10:38 am

From the beginning of the radical left, through the excesses of the French revolution, Karl Marx, the USSR, etc. it has been necessary to create a climate of fear to make their ideas make a modicum of sense. You don’t burn down the house and build a new one when it is still stable and sound. It only makes sense to tear up civil society when there are victims you can point to as a justification.

When all is going well you don’t need revolutionaries. The professional revolutionaries don’t like that. There have to be poor, downtrodden, Misérables, for their gig to get attention.

Up to the end of the 19th century all was well for the followers of Karl Marx. Misery everywhere. A majority of citizens trapped in subsistence farming. Millions vulnerable to relatively minor weather events because there was no inexpensive sanitary way to transport foodstuffs and little excess agricultural production to cover losses in one area with overproduction from another.

Then along came the fossil fuel revolution. All of the economic theories of the Marx-Lenin-Stalin crowd went into a cocked hat. So of course they frantically scramble for any way to turn back the clock. Rebels without a cause but still wedded to the Cause.

Gradually normal folks stop listening. It all sounds too frantic and exhausting. Let them own late-night TV. We’ve already gone to bed.

In the second twit, he refers to the networks as “the only outlets that can force change in this country”.

Notice the use of the word “force”. That is what the left is all about. They aren’t interested in convincing people. They want to “force change” whether you want it or not. Because in their minds, they know so much better than anyone else what is needed. This gives the not just the right, but the obligation to force other people to change how they behave. Ummm…. global warming will increase wildfires – yeah, that is just a stunner of a lie, when the FACTS are otherwise, e.g., the ongoing Cranston Fire is the result of arson and an arson arrest has been made, per Accuweather’s report.

Any firefighter who fights these wildfires will tell you that wildfires have a lot to do with the obstinate refusal of ecohippies to allow forestry workers to go in to heavily-forested areas and clean out trash, dead trees, and undergrowth, all of which are fuel for a wildfire. It has NOTHING to do with the climate at all.

Lack of rain makes it worse, but that is that nasty non-political stuff called “weather”, and we have no control – zero – zip – nada – AT ALL over that.

The climate propaganda industry got away with lying for quite a while because they could count on weak journalists and most peoples natural instinct to preserve the planet . But they also rolled in a political agenda and money making promoters got involved . Governments looking for a way to bail themselves out or at least buy time got on board too . Then after being lied to for at least 15 years the public woke up
to the overblown scam and now rightfully believe nothing from these fraudsters .
We don’t see pictures of dead fuel poverty victims curled up in a ball despite there being over 10,000 human deaths per year caused by enabling government policy . To put that in polar bear terms… that loss rate would wipeout polar bears in about 3 years .

Governments have known for years that forcing people to chose between eating or having heat was going to result in premature deaths and for the eco anarchists that was right up there alley . Population extermination of the poor and elderly .

The real “who knew ” lawsuits will be to track down the con artists and government policy makers that are causing mass genocide .

I’m afraid climate crisis news alone can’t be blamed for the certain death of MSM ratings. All the rest of the news from these terminally corrupted outlets is in the same jam for all the same resons. Designer-brained journalism in the MSM is the west’s brinkmanship with Stalin’s Pravda and Izvestia. Somehow, no matter how you try to dress up fake news, it just doesnt excite. Do these guys think the Russian collusion investigation resonates?

I’m not denialist or anything but in the northern Europe summers have been +12 C and rainy every f****** day for the last 20 years. So this is exeptional summer and now this indicates about climate change? Not very good or scientific argument.
