First, let me say thanks for stopping by on a daily basis, your continued patronage of this website in the fight against climate fanaticism is always appreciated. I’m considering some changes to WUWT’s formatting in the upcoming months to help keep important stories online longer, but before I do that I need the readers to answer a question that I can’t answer myself by looking at visitor data.
The question is: how do you see this website in your browser?
There’s three possible ways; the gallery format and the linear format, or mobile. Depending on your screen resolution and browser window size, one of these three presentations is possible.
GALLERY VIEW:
(larger screens and full width browser windows)
LINEAR VIEW:
(smaller screens and smaller browser windows)

I’d prefer gallery but Firefox gives me linear. And, I look at this site on my cell phone at times.
I use chrome browser on PC. Android mobile view most often.
I use Firefox. I get gallery if I expand to the whole screen and linear if I reduce the Firefox window (which I do at work). 🙂
My Firefox shows me gallery for recent posts with linear below for aging posts.

I generally see the gallery view at the top, with all below that first set of 5 stories shown in linear, which is I assume what Anthony meant by the gallery view anyhow. Usually I’m on a laptop using firefox v56.x with about a 15.x” screen set to show my tabs vertically down the side rather than the normal horizontal tabs across the top. I tried to respond to the poll, but didn’t see a submit button and hitting “view results” didn’t do anything either – maybe because I’m a few days after the post was originally put up and it’s no longer active or something? Anyhow, fwiw that’s how I normally see WUWT.

Yep. Right now I’m viewing WUWT on a very limited browser called Dillo. It presents the stories vertically. I have a hunch that’s because it doesn’t do Java Script.
Firefox on the same (Ubuntu Linux) machine displays in Gallery format.
Ditto for Chromium-Browser, Konqueror, Qupzilla, Midori.
On any of those browsers, the stories display vertically if you resize the window so it’s only wide enough for one story.
Hmm. Firefox gives me my preferred gallery by default. 1680 x 1050 resolution – what’s yours?
(I avoid, if at all possible, getting onto a text-rich site with the cell phone. Way too much hassle to adjust for these aging eyes.)
I also usually see gallery, but sometimes linear. Maybe it is due to firefox/chrome differences. I do use different browsers (almost always on a laptop), but I hadn’t given it much thought until now.
Running Firefox on a 22″ display, I get Gallery unless I zoom in; then I get Linear.
Good question Anthony. Actually, when I use my mobile device I always use the WordPress App
I rarely come to the front page of the WUWT site, so I don’t have any preference between gallery and linear formats. I get email notifications of new articles, and I also subscribe via the Feedly news reader. So even though I rarely go directly to WUWT, I do manage to read half or more of the articles.

I’m like you. Today was the first day of a couple of years attendance I have visited the home page because I respond to the emails Anthony sends.
I’m running Windows 10 insider, with Opera as my preferred browser.
Today I see WUWT in GALLERY VIEW, as on most days.
From memory, my Samsung Galaxy 10 tablet is the same. I’m not sure about my iPhone 7 as I don’t usually use it to browse, but I can’t recall anything different on the occasions I have.
I should really post this independently…………Duh!

Just reduce your Chrome horizontal window size a bit, and it will reduce to linear.

I get gallery or linear. If I zoom the website content, the page is linear. If not, it’s gallery. Depends on how large of type I need to comfortably read the screen and that varies from day to day. I use Safari.

Latitude, If you are running Firefox you can get an add-on that blocks scripts and other unwelcome stuff (NoScript), and it will allow the Tips page to load much quicker. My browser can load the entire page fairly quickly. I just tried the page and it took 90 seconds to load entirely.
Gallery, but hardly ever see the home page — always have a particular post showing (along w/a bunch of tabs on other sites). I just put Firefox on “work offline” when away and/or computer sleeping.
Using Chrome or Firefox, Gallery or Linear look identical.
I use Firefox with a 24″ screen. There is a top post then the next line is gallery then linear below that all the way down.

I don’t mind either format. I typically use MS Edge, or safari on a tablet. HTML5 is the way of the future, and possibly even an App.
I most often read starting with a notification in email, and click through to read the rest if the lede is interesting. What I see next depends on whether I’m reading email on my phone or PC, and these days I probably read about 50% on phone and 50% of PC. The ballot didn’t let me vote for two!

I use Brave Browser running on Debian GNU/Linux at 1080p resolution.
The Gallery view is preferred. However, it’s surprising that WordPress doesn’t automatically adjust for the device.
And… since there have been a few articles on here lately regarding blockchain enabled websites… may I suggest trying out Steemit, if you are interested in moving to a new platform that includes blockchain technology. You may even be able to forgo ads entirely since blog posts can receive payments via crypto-coin.

Great tactical wisdom from Stanford tennis coach Dick Gould, applies in many situations: “Never change a winning game, always change a losing game.”
Change is inevitable in the technologically evolving world of internet publishing. Here I would interpret Gould’s advice as meaning: “Never give up important functionality.” If there is something that helped to create your success, try to keep it available at least as an option.
Classic, simple, linear should always be an option, in my opinion.

I’m surprised you don’t have something like Google Analytics, it could tell you how your site was being viewed by screen size, as well as other useful stuff.
Google doesn’t do things honestly with this site.
That may be true when searching but I’d wager that Google Analytics, which is used to report on various aspects of site usage statistics, will just report on how your site is used, it isn’t part of the Google search mechanism/algorithms. Easy enough to put on your site, there are various plugins to add it to WordPress, it’ll give you facts on pages viewed, unique views, browsers used, geolocation of browsers etc. I think you’d find it useful and you wouldn’t need to have a poll like this to see how your site is used.

I normally use a Kindle at home, so it’s linear I think. If I visit from work it’s with firefox and should be gallery. Occasionally I’ll use my phone when my wife is shopping.

Just occurred to me: I do view on my phone a significant portion of time. So call it gallery/Firefox 50% and iPhone 50%
For a while already, the site is way too large (in a child textbook sense) for me so I view it at reduced 80% size. That way the letters are the right size for my reading comfort but unfortunately large amount of pictures gets hard to read if they contain annotations that don’t share the site’s “child textbook” letter size policy.
I view the site in browser window that takes up less than half of my screen’s width and it’s still large enough to contain full width of the gallery format including some gray borders.
I would really appreciate if you considered either reducing letter size on the blog, or enlarging your images so they match the used letter size.

Gallery is my favorite, but linear (on my tablet) is fine.
Works fine, don’t worry about consensus. I do get lately always in the link get a yellow triangle with ! in the middle. Works fine and occurs in other sites sometimes, even .gov, may be related to rare hang up as my system is very old (by such standards these days).
Having comments numbered would be useful
Highlighting new comments in a different color on revisiting an article would help with extending the comments on articles. Otherwise, you have to wade through the entire article to find new comments and that can get tedious. Currently, an article has about a 48-hour lifetime on my computer, if it’s an interesting article, and then I move on. Too many articles to stick with a particular one for very long.
I’m not picky about the view, but a way to mark or check (or SOMETHING) a comment I’ve already read would be a great facility (thanks, TA!!). I know you tried something like Jo does (thumbs up or down) which allows me to know what I’ve read and rated, and I know it was not successful here, but some facility to allow faster scrolling through comments would be the CAT’S MEOW!!!!!!

But it really makes no difference to me, as I always “read up” from the last posts I’ve read.

I rarely see the home page. I subscribe to your RSS feed in NetNewsWire, and if I open the article it shows the article view itself. When I open the home page (Chrome), I get the Gallery view.

The default view varies with the device: laptop/desktop, tablet or smartphone. Given the choice I will normally switch to ‘gallery view .

I was just going to remark that myself. The Tablet using Firefox gives one view with choice of using desktop view, though. I like the desktop view on the Android tablet better.
The images are too large for a tablet ( but maybe suitable for a phone, I suppose) if the desk top view is not requested.

Gallery and Linear on Chrome, 23″ monitor, PC, Windows 7. It’s probably mainly linear because I almost never have my open Window on full screen. I adjust the content for ease of reading via Cntrl and scroll wheel. If I open the Window to full size it’s Gallery, definitely. I’m very happy with everything!
I’m currently running Chrome, but I really dislike their pdf windows, forcing me to download pdfs that I then open with Adobe.
I use a 27″ monitor that allows me to open large browser windows.
My browser windows are sized to maximize email access and a few internet sales shops.
Even with large browser windows, there are website with gallery views wider than my window. I tend to stop using them as it is clumsy to keep paging left-right.
To put reference to WUWT’s appearance in my browser windows, WUWT fills a little more than half the width of my browser windows
Plus, I open a lot of browser tabs on a number of browser windows.

I pretty much get the gallery view – I tend to view the site on line, on my computer at work, when I’m engaged in the world and public works.
After work, I pretty much disengage, hit the gym, goof off, and try to forget the day until it starts over again.
I use the Feedly RSS reader, and click individual articles from there. I don’t recall the last time I’ve seen the actual homepage. This is true for both my pc and my phone.
But I clicked the home button up top to see what it would do and:
Gallery View. I’ve now responded with that in your poll also.
Gallery in Mozilla. While I’ve got you, 1) Thank YOU! and 2) I think your work is being misrepresented on another site, guy calls himself Scott Koonz is saying that when you gathered unadjusted records from select stations it still showed a warming trend. I don’t recall it that way, but am not able to find my way back to that post. I looked at tips, and saw over 1700, didn’t think it would do any good to ask it there. If I can be directed how to find such a post in archives, that’d be great.
And BTW, there’s a fourth view everybody sees on the first 3. It looks like a guy who is sick and tired of being lied to, and when he looks for the truth, he gets attacked by the liars (who still have their white lab coats on).

Hi I use Google and get linear but would prefer Gallery. I can see why phone users might want linear so can you give us a choice button. Is it possible to improve the search function within WUWT that would be really helpful? Great work you and the moderators are doing keep it up.
I view it on my 55″ flat-screen TV using either Chrome or Internet Explorer zoomed to about 175% so I can read it from my couch and it appear in Linear format.
Chrome on Linux (Ubuntu Mate). Gallery View.
Linear view for me (option 2). Signal comes in on hardline.

I am viewing most often on a Kindle Fire. I get a combo view. The first five articles appear in Gallery View, then there is an ad then all subsequent older articles appear in linear view. I guess, even though the Kindle is a mobile device, the screen format treats the format like an IPad might.
I get the gallery view on first opening the home page (on a widescreen laptop using Windows 10 and Firefox). I immediately go the to the most recent article and view it, then page back chronologically to previous articles, until I get to the first article I had previously read the day before.
A few not totally unrelated suggestions:
When in article view mode, when the comments are visible, I would really enjoy if the ‘Next Article’ and ‘Previous Article’ controls lived in three places instead of just one as it is now. Those three places would be 1) at the very top of the page (below the banner, above the article headline), 2) at the end of the article and before 1st comment (as it is now), and 3) at the very end of the comments. If the controls are generated automatically as the page loads, this shouldn’t be a difficult change. I think I would use the “Previous” at the end of the comments most often.
The basic metadata for each article should be prominent at a reserved spot at the beginning of each article and include these bits.

I don’t know what customizations are available to you, but if you can apply CSS, I would recommend using Bootstrap. It will automatically handle all three of your scenarios based on the viewport reported by the browser. https://getbootstrap.com/

I see gallery. I had to check because I normally just go to an article from the RSS feed.

I hit send too soon. I would mention that I also see new messages in Thunderbird (as text-only, chopping off after about two lines) using the RSS feed. For most blogs I primarily read them that way, but yours is frustrating because it chops off rather than showing the whole post there.

Depending on window size I can see either gallery or linear. Either one is fine. Running Safari on MacOS High Sierra. I occasionally use Firefox on Windows 10, and get the same result there. I never visit WUWT on mobile.
Linear, Chrome. Been lurking for years. Your site is invaluable. As an educated layman. I often cannot fully understand the details,(especially advanced mathematics) of the primary story/article. Perusing the comments threads provides me with very important information/context/insight. Whatever the format, please continue to provide this essential service. I thank you, Anthony.

How many sites/apps have committed suidide by face-lift? I have lost count. Some made themselves gradually worse, others went for total self-destruction: hotmail, yahoo, google, village square, marketwatch, computerworld/IDG, UBM, industryweek, ars technica, cnet, slashdot, dice, San Diego union-tribune, manufacturer, tennessean, a bunch of cox newspaper sites, AAAS Science & ScienceCareers, insidetech, chronicle of higher ed… There are also many news & opinion sites I used to visit a couple times a day for good content that now I visit once a week, once a month or less: Cenantua, newswithviews, American thinker, washington dc times, cns, wnd, oped news, before its news… some started jumping and twitching as I tried to read content…to make sure (in the mind of some dreanged web-weaver on some other kind of device) I could see disgusting ad content.
(Ads I can tolerate, even enjoy the extra info on good products – – those weather stations, gauges, wood-working & machine tools, beakers, thermometers of various kinds, micrometers… but, really! I don’t wear saris or ugly..or any other kind of high heels! What are their AIs thinking!?)
It is fine as is. I get the e-mail messages, go to the individual articles, or to the hone page to scroll down the moderately brief list. In a pinch, I do a search. And, hoping to get more traffic to sites I like, I add links to the best ones onto my personal (ugly, boring, non-jumping, non-security-risking i.e. no scripting) web pages…albeit with my own spin on the head-lines based on content.
Agreed — ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Simple is better than fancy. I don’t come here to be wowed by someone’s leet web skilz.
Linear. SeaMonkey 2.39 on WinXP. Browser window 1150×825. Any wider tends to make text blocks too wide to read comfortably.

I vary rarely use one of my way-too-many tablets to look at web pages, and never a mobile phone.
I read via direct article links via your RSS feed, so I never actually view the front page.
I like the look of the gallery view though.

I too see the gallery view with Firefox for the lead article plus the next 4 just below. Then it goes to linear after a blank gap which I suppose is provided by a Firefox ad blocker.
Gallery on Firefox with my desk-top. I get linear with mobile. I prefer the wider view because it displays the comment indenting better.

In Firefox, IE, and Edge I get Gallery initially for 5-6 articles then linear for the rest of the articles. This is in Windows 10.

Gallery using Waterfox on Windoze 10, large workstation screen. I don’t bother looking on anything else.
I occasionally have to turn on uBlock Origin, as there are still advertisers out there who either abuse the space or are incompetent.
Explorer/22″ = gallery
Gallery view, but on my monitor it covers a little bit more than a third of the screen width…. it’s hard to find a theme that adapts to a big monitor, most of them seem focused on the small screens.
I see the gallery view BUT there is about 11+ inches of WUWT with 3 inch, grey areas on each “margin”.

(I preferred Firefox until their frequent updates kept disabling parts of the security suite I trust.)
PS I don’t have a laptop or a cell phone (let alone a “smart phone”.)

Edge and Brave on Windows 10 give Gallery view – fine by me.
Windows phone 10 gives mobile view – very occasional use – don’t mind this for quick scanning.
I usually remove Chrome from any clients computers and put a WUWT link in the favourites 🙂 and show them some graphs from the side-bar data!
When I say clients they are mostly older folks that I help pro-bono with their technological needs when their grandkids live on the other side of the country or world, or folks that come into our Men’s Shed for help.
Mobile view. But my ad blocker must strip off the cartoons.
Gallery on Safari (MacOS), Chrome or Opera (windows 10) on a MacBook pro. About 75 % of the time.
Lineal on Safari iPad Air. 25 %

I view gallery and mobile approximately 50/50.
I use firefox – and I’m not sure what it is, though it’s two column, I’d still call it linear – story in one and site stats, shameless plugs, ads, and blogroll in the 2nd – It’s always been this way for me – and the screen is maybe 23″ desktop(?) Display is the same no matter which browser I use.
FWIW, I don’t view the site on cellphone. I never have my web browser at full screen, although I usually use gallery but I have a (slight) preference for linear.

It depends on how wide I have my browser. If I it full screen It is gallery view, If I reduce it some it goes to linear view, If I reduce it a lot it goes to mobile, which is the way it is supposed to be.
At work; IE explorer, I get gallery by default, but if I shrink the screen to view more than one window at a time, it turns into Linear. Both work perfect.
At home; Firefox likes to give me Linear. Works perfect.

I voted ‘linear.’ However, if the text size is at 100%, it’s actually ‘gallery.’ It’s ‘linear’ on my screen cuz I keep the text size at 150% (for the sake of my tired old eyes).

I’m using Edge with a 27″ monitor in portrait, so I get full width in Linear.
You didn’t really describe the layout well. The first article is always full width, 2 through 5 can change layout, the rest are linear with a sidebar (no sidebar on mobile).
On a 24″ monitor in Firefox, if the browser width is greater than 1/2 screen 2-5 are horizontal, if width is less than 1/2 screen 2-5 are vertical.
I would really like the number of columns to change gradually. 1/2 width window has 2 columns, 3/4 width window has 3 columns, full width window has 4 columns, ultra-wide has 5.
Chromium on Xubuntu is Gallery, but I get Mobile view on Android, as expected.
Running the Pale Moon browser (generally fullscreen) on Linux Mint, current monitor 1280×1024. Opening the homepage shows gallery mode (my favourite), but the page is not the full width of the browser window, only about 75-80%. After 2x “control-plus” to magnify for my aging eyesight, the browser goes to linear mode, although the page is still not quite the full window width.
Used to run a 1440×900 monitor – same non-full-width display in the browser window, but gallery mode survived the two magnification steps. And yes, clear, readable, black’n’white text in an uncluttered layout beats all weird colour (and other) effects – WUWT is great as it is in that respect. The aim is communication, after all, not to give the hapless visitors an exotic aesthetic experience as they struggle to make out the words!
(Also – have a play in the CSS Zen Garden and be amazed at what can bo done with the same page and a bit of style sheet dancing! You get to write just plain htm pages day to day, and then you can experiment freely with styling while never annoying anyone who prefers an existing style.)
Depends on what device I am using, FireFox gives Gallery and the iPAD delivers linear. I am one of those who really does not worry about the difference, I check WUWT daily so keep up with what ever content is posted. Thanks Anthony for all of your dedicated efforts to supply the world with something other than the negative ‘we are all doomed.’

I have linear because I’m mostly on my laptop (15.6″ 1920 x 1080 with text at 125%)
I prefer gallery as my main pc (2 x 22″ can’t remember the resolution, but 1 screen is 8 years old, 1 is 2 years old)

Gallery and phone, but more often gallery. The phone view has its own set of problems. Header is never visible and article titles often isn’t either, plus it has waaaaaaaay more ads than the gallery view and more intrusive.
For my parts it is both dependent on the device i am using i have two desktop boxes one is hooked up to a wide screen format (16:9 aspect ratio) display and i usually use the gallery mode if reading on that one , and the other one is hooked up to an old style 20 inch 4:3 aspect tube display where the usual mode I prefer is the linear one and page fitted to screen width, I kind of like that one better and do most often use that set for brwsing the net, find it easier on the eyes. And then I also have a mobile and a 10 inch pad , if i am reading your web on the mobile i usually do it in the mobile mode, but on some occasion i force it change to linear the lineaer mode (request desktope site ) , and on pad i usually stick wit the galley style.

Have an ancient ipad but it keeps “dropping out”.Intend to buy new laptop, but pensioner now,so this is in the distant future.However,would still use phone when away-grandchildren etc.Thankyou for all that you do.

Same here, but using Pale Moon as my browser – it’s a Firefox derivative. The PC is a 17″ screen laptop with 1600×900 resolution. If I reduce the width of the browser window it jumps to linear view.

I read it in linear, using explorer. Although I have firefox as well, it’s just that it’s on my favourites bar so I haven’t moved it over yet.

My Firefox shows me gallery for recent posts with linear below for aging posts. Safari on my ipad is always linear (and frequently crashes causing page to reload).
Mostly I view in Gallery.

Anthony, first let me say I cherish this website and am very grateful for your hosting it.
I use a small screen monitor at home and sneak peaks at a wide screen at work. My conclusion is that i can only read one story at a time. I am also a codger and like things as they are. Not much help, but I thought i would toss it in.

Well as the website is responsive, these results won’t be a surprise: in Firefox full-screen gives the gallery format with left and right dark grey regions outside the window, and making the screen small enough gives the linear format with the right-side “links-column” still there, and making the screen even more smaller gives the mobile format (just one column). My mobile just gives the mobile format.
When I use the Chromium browser (a Linux edition of Chrome) it acts just like Firefox.
My standard use is full-screen on the desktop. So for me it is mostly the gallery format.
I see all three, depending, as you state. I mostly come for content. As long as it is easy to find, I like it. And, I thank you for your dedication. Much appreciated!

A thought: The quick summary/synopsis of each article in the email is quite confusing. Everything’s run together, and it’s often difficult to separate the important messages. Just having a brief synopsis of each article, without names, etc., would be far more useful.

Running Win XP Pro, service pak 2 with firefox on a IBM thinkpad from 2006. I see gallery view and like that.
1920 x 1080, but I only use half-screen-width (or less) windows to view text, so linear.
