Former New York mayor and businessman Michael Bloomberg was appointed climate envoy by UN chief António Guterres on Monday.
Immediately, parallels were drawn with another New York billionaire, Donald Trump, whose determination to wind back US action on climate change Bloomberg has strongly opposed.
On Monday, Bloomberg said he hoped Trump would change his mind.
“And if that’s the case, that shows a great leader who when facts change, and they recognise something different, they’re not bound to what they did before, they’re willing to change,” he said.

How preposterous!–DiCaprio and Bloomberg as UN climate envoys, no less! And among their many carbon-phile “sins”, both favor travel by private jet (reportedly Bloomberg owns a Dassault Falcon 900 LX (apparently American-made planes aren’t hoity-toity and swanky enough for the “great man”)) with connecting, bullet-proof, chauffeured limousines, sufficient in number to accommodate both themselves and their inevitable, traveling-companion entourage of butt-kissers; gofers; flunkies; NGO hot-babes (whose duties, at the granular level of detail, remain shrouded in impenetrable mystery, despite intense outside scrutiny by our ever-vigilant MSM); and, most importantly, mega-menacing, heavily, heavily armed body-guards, sporting the latest in scary-dude sunglass-technology, and loaded down with high-capacity, fully-loaded magazines (just in case the police don’t show up right away in an “emergency”). It is to laugh, comrades!

For Jan Christoffersen: Bloomberg made his money with information technology used in the financial industry. Every trader on Wall Street has a Bloomberg terminal on their desk that is chock full of information that is useful to their work. He has built a company that provides a quality product. That said, his company is a huge user of energy (and thus CO2 spewing) for the server farms that must be used to support it. So again, he’s like Typhoid Mary promoting sanitary practices.
What I wander about is: Why are people not held accountable for their actions?
If I waisted my company’s money on some venture that did not give expected results when there was information available that put the venture into the highest risk possible, I would be looking for another job.
We all take risks, but if we fail repeatedly in the same kind of venture, and we are allowed to continue, there are someone in the company protecting us.
Back in the 90’s I worked on a point-of-sale system project for a major UK retailer. The project was not going well, as it involved about 6 different suppliers and no clear spec.
So the retailer replaced the project lead – with the man who had failed to implement the previous generation system – on the grounds that he had a lot of experience with failed projects!
This project also never completed.
Interesting. Around the same time I worked for a relatively small workstation company in France. It was acquired by Thompson CSF (if you know who they were – big French company started by an Englishman, hence the name, which they have since changed).
Anyway, for a while they left us alone, mostly because we made money. Thompson had tried to create their own Unix workstation business, and failed miserably. One day, they started moving into our company new senior managers who “had a lot of experience in this industry”. The very same senior management that had failed so spectacularly with Thompson’s own venture.
Guess how well they (and the company) did?

As an exercise: Try and name any great leader of history who simply led the crowd (his/her people) where they were all thought they wanted to go. The Great Leaders never took the easy path.
In recorded history, starting with Moses, he led his people into the Sinai desert on a journey that still inspires for how it developed the identity of the Jewish people. And forward from there.
The Roman Empire was built by a few good leaders. Rome accumulated wealth (of course via a harsh, brutish colonial imperialism on the ruled outlying areas).
Then Rome had a lot of crappy Caesars that were not leaders. They merely gave the mobs and the masses what they wanted to hold onto power. That is not leadership. That is what today’s Democrats and Socialists want for the US and the Western World. Bloomberg is of that mould. It is the same non-leadership model that Chavez and now Maduro have used in Venezuela. A slow, descending depletion of wealth to retain power.
If Trump really wants to show he is a great leader he should see that climate science faces his idea of an antagonistic opponent determined to trash every single line of attack the climate lobby uses. This opponent should be as unequally funded in favour of destroying climate science as the pro lobby has been for propping it up for the last ten years.
