Bizarre Claim: Global Warming Could Alter People’s Personalities

From the “we think Michael Mann, Peter Gleick, and Bill McKibben are already affected” department.

By Michael Bastasch

A new Columbia Business School study is out with the latest bizarre claim about man-made global warming — it could alter people’s personalities.

“As climate change continues across the world, we may also observe concomitant changes in human personality,” reads the study, published in the journal Nature on Tuesday.

It’s only the latest in a slew of studies on the potential psychological effects of future warming, and it’s not even the most bizarre. For example, recent studies have claimed worry about global warming is making people depressed.

Those worried about man-made warming reported “feelings of loneliness and lethargy,” Reuters reported of a University of Arizona study.

For some environmentalists, lack of hope for the future seems to be real. The New York Times recently reported that some people are deciding to forgo having children because of global warming.

Even more bizarre, a 2015 Harvard School of Public Health study claims, “Carbon dioxide (CO2) has a direct and negative impact on human cognition and decision-making.” Basically, suggesting global warming will make humans dumber.

Columbia researchers claim temperature is a key factor in determining personality traits. People who grew up in more temperate areas, around 72 degrees Fahrenheit, scored better on five broad personality traits than those who grew up where it’s too hot or too cold.

“Clement temperatures encourage individuals to explore the outside environment, where social interactions and new experiences abound,” Jackson Lu, a Columbia doctoral candidate, said in a statement.

Lu contends that future global warming could mean personality changes across the world over time.

“Venturing outdoors and interacting with lots of people make people more agreeable, conscientious, emotionally stable, extraverted, and open to new experiences,” said Lu. “But when the temperature is too hot or too cold, individuals are less likely to go outside to meet up with friends or to try new activities.”

How accurate or reliable is this study? That’s up for you to decide.

Brian A, to be accurate, those provocateurs are absolutely NOT anarchists. Period, without question. The reason is because anyone who truly understands a voluntary society and free association understands natural moral law, and that is simple. Don’t steal. That extends to harming others, raping, physically stealing, and trespassing. It’s all theft.
A true voluntaryist recognizes his obligation to govern himself accordingly and only use force in self-defense. There isn’t nary a fellow voluntaryist that I know who acts or promotes otherwise. It is critical to make that distinction because these children are entitled, coddled, well off, “educated” in the propaganda of statism (especially Marxism), and they are angry because they think everything should be given to them with no effort. To them, as they’ve been taught, that competition and personal responsibility is a tool of the oppressor against the weak.
So they break the only law that actually exists, don’t frigging steal! Destroying others belongings and property, initiating violence, and threatening others is the antithesis of don’t steal.
They have been fed a poisonous foundation and they ate it up like good cattle, and now they are sick with self loathing and misanthropy so they are natural fulfilling there hateful worldview.
Please don’t misrepresent living a voluntary life without external rulers (an+archon) to these scum suckers

There is plenty of evidence that the thought of global warming is altering neuron connections in a large section of academics and green brains. However, so would the thought of The Donald being president. One is seeming to get them more money, the other is reducing their funding to zero.
I can only advise them to focus on the person who is intent on bankrupting them. The GW cause is lost. Survival needs consideration. Preaching to all about fads is going to attract people with the power to put them out of business. A very low profile may save their budgets. Otherwise most will have to find a real job and do …….. work.

“Bizarre Claim: Global Warming Could Alter People’s Personalities”
Not so bizarre, actually. People who believe in global warming hysteria ARE getting stupider and stupider. There was ample evidence decades ago that this was a false alarm – a scam. Some people believed in the warming scam but after a while were exposed to the evidence, changed their opinions and rejected warmist dogma. Others, exposed to the same evidence, refused to change and thus got progressively stupider with time.

No Latitude, the relationship really is there its just that they have got it the wrong way around (surprise, surprise). Altered personalities have created the perception of Global Warming. A university education can do that to you, unfortunately.

Leo, the highest dew point ever recorded was 35 degrees C, and that was a short-lived event that has never been matched, to the best of our knowledge. Yet I constantly hear people claiming that 35 degrees C (95 degrees F) with 100% humidity happens all over the place on a regular basis. Not so.
35 degrees and 60% humidity is bad enough, and still relatively rare in most places. I am not sure why the exaggeration is so common.

There is a joke in my parts (north of the 49th) “I can do more outside at +30 than I can at -30” (Celsius that is). We get both and I’ve been to very hot humid places and while heat and humidity might make you think you are going to die, the opposite end WILL actually make you die.
This is why we humans alter our climate with shade, shelter and HVAC.

It is all very true. Whenever I experience the global warming involved from flying from New England to the Caribbean, I experience the following personality changes.
1) A need to get to the beach.
2) An urge to get out on the water on a sailboat.
3) A compulsion to go snorkeling on a coral reef.
4) A desire to chill out in the shade of a palm tree.
5) A persistent want to get a drink at the swim-up bar poolside.
These things never affect me in New England, especially in the winter.
It is all true.

“A study from 1961 exposed “23 crewmen exposed to CO2 at 15,000 ppm for 42 days in a submarine” and the men “showed no psychomotor testing effects but showed moderate increases in anxiety, apathy, uncooperativeness, desire to leave, and sexual desire.”
Yep, 42 days in a submarine with just men will do that, even at normal levels of CO2.
Wonder if the study mentioned the level of O2 on that submarine, too?

Having actually spent well over 42 days on a dived diesel-electric submarine, the overwhelming emotion is one of utter boredom. 6 hours on watch, 6 hours off watch for weeks and weeks. Weekends do not exist. I never experienced any anxiety – well except with the Navigating Officer who was a complete muppet.
What we did do though was to monitor every hour (using draegers) the CO2 contents amongst others things and only bring it to the attention of the Officer of the Watch (Officer of the Deck in the USN) should it get above 3% (bearing in mind that atmospheric CO2 is 0.004%). This never happened in 21 years of being a submariner. The reason is that a higher % of CO2 causes headaches and at 6% causes severe loss of cognitive abilities. 9% puts you in a coma and 12% has you dead.

It’s a tough thing to have to admit that cold weather has me snookered.
I have to drag myself out to the front steps three to four times a day to put out bird food for a bunch of demanding, ungrateful little chirpers.
And then there’s deciding which book to read, which sandwich to fix, and being forced to consume mass quantities of cheesecake, hot tea or hot cocoa (with whipped cream), and whether or not I want to stir my stumps and go pick up the mail and the paper.
It’s a tough existence living in the cave, and looking out at all the poor souls who have to trudge their way from the front door to the car through the snow they shoveled just before breakfast.

They say that too cold is as bad as too warm, so should we be fortunate enough to experience global warming they are stating it will benefit some peoples’ personalities.
While going outside might enable one to interact with others, it could also lead to solitude. Whereas being trapped in a building by a hostile climate is almost certain to lead to interactions with other people trapped in the same building.
Just for some fun, somebody point out to them that white Europeans live in temperate climates and various indigenous people live the the places that are very hot or very cold, so their research is clearly racist.

Not too sure about the studies but the Yankee girls on Ft Lauderdale beach during spring break were pretty crazy. I’m sure it was the warm temp that had something to do with it. They were all hot!
And the Southern girls at Myrtle Beach in June, “well ya’ll just ain’t gonn know”.
But I must admit there was little time spent psycho-analyzing the moments.

The paper has twenty-six! authors. Psychology is rising to the level of authorial fecundity of a particle physics paper from CERN. The Association for Psychological Science (sic) should be very proud (I dislike their appropriation of “Science” to abscond gravitas into themselves).
Fortunately, the work (hard to call it research) was entirely funded by the Chinese government. Also, only four salaries were US academic, and all but six were paid in China. So, speaking as an American, at least the US didn’t pay much for this.
The paper’s conclusions rely on the “Big 5” personality traits all the explanatory rage in psychology these days.
I looked at these awhile back, in the context of a study claiming explanatory force with Trump voters, and found the Big 5 traits are significantly cross-correlated. So, whatever it is they’re measuring, the metrics are not orthogonal. The purported explanatory content is confused.
That the head post study was published shows how far standards have fallen at Nature (London). Any lurid supposition gets into their pages so long as it hews to the AGW narrative.

Climate fear mongering can cause mental illness in those inclined to listen to their negative thoughts and irrational fears. It is most prominent in a human subgroup that self-identify as Progressives, a deliberate misnomer for Socialist. The mental instability known as Climate Clinical Regression Afflicting Progressives (CCRAP) is perniciously irrational, expressing itself in the afflicted as a fear of their own exhaled breath adding to ‘CO2 pollution’. Additionally, they fear the increase of molecular CO2 in our atmosphere from 3 molecules in 10,000 all the way up to an extreme of 4 molecules in 10,000. Do you see the irrationality in those baseless fears?
Fortunately, a rational mind easily discerns CCRAP, as expressed by the progressively afflicted.
The 1st step to recovery for the poor dears, is admitting they need help with their irrational CCRAP……

Again, urban couch potatoes substitute personal opinion assumptions for direct observations.
It certainly isn’t hard to spot exactly who refuses to venture outside when temperatures are too hot or too cold. They likely also avoid foggy, rainy and snowy days too.
It is the kind of assumption that someone makes who’s idea of outside weather is because they dress for riding in heated/cooled vehicles, rather than walking to their destination. How terrible it must be for them to briefly experience hot or cold weather while heading to their rides.

There are too many scientists and far too much money competing in a world that has already discovered so much that the law of diminishing returns………with respect to the amount of scientific study needed to produce new revelations that kicked in decades ago….is making it extraordinarily difficult for today’s scientists to make new discoveries that make an authentic contribution to science.
But we still have massive amounts of money and scientists working to find less and less.
As the amount of authentic science discovered per scientist/dollar has plunged in the last couple of decades, it has become common practice to dress up shit science and use verbiage to describe it that spins it into “unprecedented” or “unique” in order to justify its existence.
In the field of climate science, the only limitation to what can be discovered is the creativity of those doing the studies.

Frankly, I prefer it a bit on the cool side as far as outside temperature goes. Sure, cold kills. So does heat. I can dress for the cold, and spend the whole day outside in -20 F temps relatively comfortably. But, you can only take off so much clothing, in public, in the heat, before local law enforcement will want to have a chat with you.
If a person is not well adjusted enough to begin with, then I guess the weather COULD push them over the edge into a full blown mental condition. (Most of which are completely imaginary anyways…) Perhaps those ill adjusted folks could do themselves and all the rest of us a favor and remain in their homes and businesses sheltered from the evil that lurks outside in the form of sunshine, or snow.
There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.

I agree. I like winter much more than summer. Correct dressing helps. I increased my closet contents considerably when I geared up for snowshowing, ice fishing and so forth.

I can kind of understand what they’re talking about. When sitting in a hot tub in below freezing temps, it is rather annoying when your hair freezes to the outside of the tub. I’ll have to wait till spring.
Those people at Columbia don’t have to worry though. They don’t even need to be concerned. ;-} Even if the Zombie apocalypse does happen. They’ll be safe.

Can I get the one on the right (consensus science) in a black light poster. It’s like just so psychedelic.

Is there a lava lamp option?

One thing I have noticed: there is never any “research” made into the effects of global cooling to provide any sort of balance. It’s always “further warming will/could.might/ cause THIS.” and is never coupled with “on the other hand, cooling would/could/might/ cause ….”
Would cooling change personalities too?
For better?
Or Worse?
Or not at all?
Nor do they ever ask “Why are this planet’s tropics so prolific? ”
(Shhh! Maybe because they’re warm … ?)

My 4 year old plays out all day in Thailand where it is 35 degrees Celsius (95 F) all year. He speaks both fluent Thai and English and since he just started school is learning Chinese and is singing songs in that language… he is happy little soul… I am in the UK at the moment and everyone is miserable because of the cold… most Brits struggle to speak their own language… guess where I want to be right now!! Perhaps if the universities in the “West” raised their entry standards back to where they were 30 years ago we would see some mindful research instead of the blubbing of second rate academia.

Well a mean temperature of 72 is what percentage of the globe? Hello to all of you maladjusted denizens of the everywhere but San Diego.
Let’s see. We spend 24/7 trying to scare the crap out of you, but it’s global warming’s fault.
You have to admire the Chutzpah.

This massive intelligence test is doing my head. Just tell me what I scored and I’ll go on the B ark quietly if I failed.

Ah, yes – I’m much happier now with everything covered in snow and ice than with plants blooming and birds singing around me. As if! (I think I’ll self medicate with a nice single malt in the weekend, personality not at it’s best in cold surroundings) 😉

It looks like the Columbia Business School study is trying to validate President Trump’s “s&%#hole” country statement- people from those warmer, tropical countries presumably suffer from personality defects.,

It seems obvious that Global Warming could alter people’s personalities – I can’t believe that Mann has ALWAYS been full of hate and bile against climate sceptics

“Feelings of loneliness and lethargy” could be the result of, oh, I don’t know . . . 1,500 different causes? ABSOLUTE CLAPTRAP masquerading as not claptrap.

It’s not the personality that’s being affected directly, but it’s the ability to think clearly. It’s not climate change that causes this, as climate change has even been implicated in making mankind smarter as we have continuously adapted to a variable climate. It’s the obsessive, compulsive fear about climate change that’s causing the brains of the alarmists to rot. If these rotting brains only believed in the scientific method, the harm they are doing to themselves could be stopped.

We have all had to contend with habitual liars at some stage of our lives. It is lies to support lies to support lies. Then, one fateful day, you pick up an inconsistency in the narrative or an outright lie or it all just gets to phantasmogorical to believe. Your bullshit meter is activated and you realize it was a load of bulldust from day one, often based on a half truth. By then, you usually have been well and truly fleeced.

Of course its true. Just look at the need for intelligent people to conform to the crowd, not question anything and trash anyone who even raises a question. Just I dont think you should need to pay a “University to get such a comment.
