Al Gore at Rice University: More Climate Alarmism, Political Bias in Houston

By Robert Bradley Jr. — reposted from Master Resource at suggestion of the author

“Former Vice President of the United States Al Gore will speak at Rice University’s Tudor Fieldhouse at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23. Gore, who is chairman of the Climate Reality Project and a board member of Rice’s Doerr Institute for New Leaders, will present ‘The Climate Crisis and Extreme Weather.’ The discussion, which will include Gore answering [prescreened] audience questions, is presented by Rice’s Office of the President and the Doerr Institute.”

– Rice University, Former Vice President Al Gore to speak at Rice Oct. 23 , Press Release (October 10, 2017).

The propagandists are hard at work trying to make Houston, Texas, ground zero in the cause of climate alarmism and a carbon tax. The Houston Chronicle, New York-influenced with its ideology, incessantly ran stories of Hurricane Harvey being a man-made anomaly (see my Houston Chronicle: Preaching Climate Alarmism Post Harvey and Charles Battig’s Politicizing Harvey in the Houston Chronicle.)

And in recent weeks, the climate activists, warring against fossil fuels in general, and seeking a carbon tax in particular, are erecting inflammatory billboards in Houston in the wake of Harvey. Reported the Houston Chronicle (October 13) in “Billboard Effort Ask ‘Climate Polluters’ to Help Pay for Harvey;”

Houston billboards, part of a media campaign, are asking energy companies, whose fossil fuel products are blamed for accelerating climate change, to pay their “fair share” for the massive Hurricane Harvey recovery process.

The Center for Climate Integrity and Public Citizen say that man-made climate change is warming ocean waters and strengthening storms like Harvey, helping them to unleash much more rainfall and flooding on communities.

The overwhelming consensus among scientists is that burning coal, petroleum products and natural gas is quickening the pace of global warming by emitting carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that traps heat in the atmosphere.

This is just the beginning of a larger national campaign that’s starting in Houston and includes a website, whopaysforharvey.com, said Adrian Shelley, Texas director for Public Citizen.

Rice University Propaganda

The next phase of the Houston climate assault will occur next week at Rice University with Al Gore himself. (The university’s announcement is reproduced at the end of this post.)

As posts at MasterResource have previously detailed [see”Rice’s Baker Institute Climate Embarrassment (Sass’s ad hominem response to Rep. Smith)],” Rice University has blocked climate skepticism and polluted diversity of intellectual thought.

Under gatekeeper Neal Lane, the Baker Institute has refused to allow fair, open debate about natural versus anthropogenic climate forces and has championed sky-is-falling government activism. For example, Lane/Baker:

    1. Killed publication of the proceedings of a fair climate-change conference held in 2000 with, for example, Patrick Michaels and James Hansen participating;

    2. Held a high-priced, widely publicized, assume-alarmist-science conference in 2008, Beyond Science: The Economics and Politics of Responding to Climate Change, featuring John Kerry and John Holdren.

    3. Refused to host a climate forum/debate in 2010 between Gerald North (Texas A&M) and Richard Lindzen (MIT), which ended up being co-sponsored by Rice’s Shell Center for Sustainabilityand the Center for the Study of Environment and Society.

Gore Announcement

The Rice announcement follows:

Former Vice President of the United States Al Gore will speak at Rice University’s Tudor Fieldhouse at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 23. Gore, who is chairman of the Climate Reality Project and a board member of Rice’s Doerr Institute for New Leaders, will present “The Climate Crisis and Extreme Weather.”

The discussion, which will include Gore answering audience questions, is presented by Rice’s Office of the President and the Doerr Institute.

Tickets for the event are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Security measures will be in effect, so attendees will be required to arrive 45 minutes before the event begins. To reserve tickets, click here.

Gore is the cofounder and chairman of Generation Investment Management. He is a senior partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and a member of Apple Inc.’s board of directors. Gore spends the majority of his time as the chairman of the Climate Reality Project, a nonprofit devoted to solving the climate crisis.

Gore was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976, 1978, 1980 and 1982 and to the U.S. Senate in 1984 and 1990. He was inaugurated as the 45th vice president of the United States on January 20, 1993, and served eight years.

He is the author of the best-sellers “Earth in the Balance,” “An Inconvenient Truth,” “The Assault on Reason,” “Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis,” and, most recently, “The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change.”

He is the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth,” and the recently-released documentary “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.” Gore is the co-recipient, with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for “informing the world of the dangers posed by climate change.”

Geostorm, as I understand it, is about governments weaponizing the weather after learning to control it. My hope is that this will make people everywhere leary of allowing any government the ability to tinker with the weather or climate.

We were all indoctrinated into something or other when we were young. Probably why so many of us are on WUWT now.

When the climate doesn’t pitch us into global Armageddon, and the kids now are in their 30’s/40’s, there will be one almighty backlash.

If we think Brexit and Trump are manifestations of public opinion, just wait, they will be nothing compared to when our kids and grandkids figure out they have been conned en mass.

there will be no backlash – au contraire

being stupid means they have no right to question any authority whatsoever – they will submit to any.
the existential pain of being stupid can not be cured but it can be temporarily relieved by the simple technique of punking somebody stupider than thou.
thus, a new generation will be raised with the inviolable conviction that they are stupid.

Then they should also be receiving big pay checks from the agricultural world for the many trillions of dollars worth of atmospheric fertilizer that is massively increasing crop yields and world food production.

The connection with hurricanes is speculative. Photosynthesis and the key role of CO2 is an irrefutable law.

280 parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere was dangerously low. If we went back to that level, there would be widespread world food shortages and prices at record highs-not affordable for much of the worlds poor. One can guess that at least hundreds of millions would starve and over a billion go hungrier.

Growing corn to make fuel, one of the dumbest ideas in history would never have been possible.

At 405 ppm, we are still low on atmospheric CO2, even though world crop production is setting records……and cereal stocks……wheat, corn and barley are the highest in history, meaning that production is even out gaining record demand/use. However, no matter how high CO2 and crop production gets, growing corn(the crop that pollutes the most and uses billions of gallons of water) for fuel will always be a dumb idea.

Should the good people of Houston be bracing themsevles for an imminent cold snap?

October 19, 2017 12:21 pm

“Houston billboards, part of a media campaign, are asking energy companies, whose fossil fuel products are blamed for accelerating climate change, to pay their “fair share” for the massive Hurricane Harvey recovery process.”

The “energy companies”, whose refineries were also flooded during Hurricane Harvey, are probably spending millions rebuilding whatever was damaged during the storm and flooding, trying to get the refineries up and running to make up the shortfall in supplies of gasoline, Diesel fuel, and heating oil caused by Hurricane Harvey. Those costs are their “fair share” of the recovery costs from Hurricane Harvey. The “energy companies” are not to blame for Hurricane Harvey, any more than they can take credit for the 11-year lull in hurricanes between 2006 and 2016.

Houston is not a good place for Gore to be demonizing the fossil fuel industry, which provides the “bread and butter” for the city of Houston. It’s the equivalent of Hillary Clinton telling West Virginians she wants to put the coal miners out of business–how did that work out for her?

Steve you are very correct. The people of Houston learned long ago that their bread is buttered by the petroleum industry. So goes the petroleum industry so goes Houston’s economy. I knew a lot of folks from Houston who lived through the oil price collapse in the 1980s. They lost everything. None were directly in the business. The Left so hate capitalism, not just fossil fuels, that they just cannot comprehend how business works.

I support this. If the contribution can be quantified, then it is only fair for each contributor to cough up. Once the carbon sources are quantified, in order to keep it fair, China and others like Poland and Russia will find their governments having to pay as they used to own almost everything.

I doubt there will be anything to worry about. CO2 doesn’t hang around loading ports so they can’t blame individual companies for local damage. It is not like a chemical spill. I wonder if they are as unaware of this as they are unaware of how the climate works.

That sounds fair.
But first prove that Man’s CO2 emissions, in this case via the use of fossil fuels (including the fossil fuels used to build solar panels, Don Quixote’s windmills, etc.) had anything to do with the effects of Harvey.
No proof? No case.

PS Rice dudes and dudetts, remembers Al blamed Katrina of GW Bush.
Our politics may differ, but don’t belive someone who will claim anything to make a buck.
(Yes, Al has gone “Green” big time!)

Give it a few more years, boys and girls. The “charm” is wearing thin, the “glamour” that he’s been dragging around is slowly fraying through because he’s put on a few dozen pounds. It won’t be long before old Algore will be a curiosity and a crashing bore.

“It won’t be long before” Al Gore turns into a crashing bore is a negative number. He has been a pompous bore since he reached national prominence in 1992.

I figure it’s only a matter of time before someone (like me) tells him right to his face ‘Al, you really don’t matter for much any more. Now just go away.’
Imagine the puzzled look in his beady little eyes….

Maybe attendees can get a free copy of the inconvenient movie that faded so fast . The climate models used to justify the global warming fear industry have been proven to be garbage in garbage out
but everyone is free to chose their religion of choice . Just don’t expect the rest of us to pay for your beliefs .
Let’s hope the warming continues because the big scary will be a return to the next cooling cycle .
How is Al Gore getting to Houston canoe ?

Compare and contrast sentences from two articles in the last few days.

1) Liberals will tell you that Minnesota is one of the nation’s leaders in “green” energy
2) Al Gore at Rice University: More Climate Alarmism, Political Bias in Houston

The words” pots and kettles” spring to mind.

…even the legendary Charlie Munger said the following[about Al Gore recently, which is close to being a put-down: “… he’s not very smart… his partner is a good value investor… no CO2, and so the value investor picked the best service companies… all of a sudden he made 100s of millions… but he is an idiot…”
