There are plenty of theories about what led to the Brexit vote. Now, Al Gore, has a new one to add to the pile. The former vice president – who has been busy promoting his new film by labelling those who question him ’deniers’ – says the EU referendum result was brought about because of… climate change.
Gore suggested that the war in Syria was caused by ‘climate refugees’ flooding into the cities. This, in turn, by Gore’s version of events at least, kickstarted the wider refugee crisis – eventually leading Brits to vote out last June. Here’s what Gore told the New European:
‘Long before the civil war in Syria began from 2006 to 2010 80% of livestock were killed by the drought, 60% of farms were destroyed, 1.5 million climate refugees were driven into their cities where they collided with another 1.5 million from the Iraq War… And soon thereafter the civil war – which had other causes as well – erupted and opened the gates of hell, and the refugee crisis, which also had other causes, began to shake the foundations of the European experiment.
Of course there were many causes of Brexit, but one of them was this, and the most powerful ad in the campaign was that billboard showing the endless lines of refugees at the borders of Europe with the implicit message ‘do you want them coming here?’

That required emptying the reservoir’s water through the dam’s hydroelectric turbines.

It almost seems that the inevitable end of this stream of thought will be a desire to erase all vestiges of history since slavery or coercive labour practices were rather common and widespread practices among most postindustrial cultures that were in conflict with neighboring cultures and in competition for the same resources. This includes many indigenous cultures in the west and elsewhere. Trying to judge the past by present standards is a fool’s errand. We should just be grateful that we live in a world where most of us can live a very comfortable life while supporting a high level of human rights and protections for all. Our efforts are better directed toward providing the same in areas where people are not so fortunate.

I think not. Press gangs were a perfectly normal feature of life in and around ports during that time. If you wanted to avoid being press-ganged – avoid ports. All crew were paid (so not slaves), were free to leave when hostilities were finished (unlike slaves) and were in receipt of prize money – and after Trafalgar that was quite a considerable amount (slaves are unpaid)
If anything, Nelson was loved by his crew’s because he recognised their worth, he looked after them, went to great pains to ensure they were well fed (over 5,000 calories per day per man). Unlike many captains he would talk to his men personally and visit them in the lower decks, and as mentioned earlier, receive treatment after them. In the 18th/19th century this was revolutionary stuff, but this combined with his leadership, tactical brilliance and personal bravery ensured that his men would follow him into hell if need be – and they did.
You simply cannot judge someone who lived in those times by the standards of this age.

They believe without any evidence of significant warming, what makes you think significant cooling will make a difference? Heck most of the true believers are so young they have lived most of their lives during the great pause, they have never experienced physically any warming, yet they all will tell you how much warmer it is now than when they were little kids.
The “true believers” may continue to believe despite cooling, but their credibility with the rest of the populace, including politicians, will decline. Even IGPOCC’s reports will have to lower their climate sensitivity estimate-range if there is significant cooling.

This was ONE of the reasons I wanted to leave; the high-handed, corrupt (the EU auditors have refused to sign off the EU accounts for twenty consecutive years), unelected Brussels elite who tell us how much renewable energy we must produce, the maximum power of irons and vacuum cleaners we are permitted to have, lavatories that don’t flush and light bulbs that don’t light.
Agree, we have a number of those people now in Sweden, that after being granted to stay, admit (with laughter) that the only reason they got here, was to get a better life (and still keeping their cultural habits up to date …)

I suppose I could sit around all day like Al constructing implausible, ludicrous, chains of causality, but I have real work to do.
Brexit was partly caused by a CO2 spewing global elite who, no matter what the problem, manage to find us plebs guilty and for which we have to pay, and pay, and pay.
That certainly figured in my vote to leave, the desire to be free of EU eco-zealots, so AG may be partly right, but not for the reason he cited.
Quite, and I voted leave for the same reason so many “deplorables” voted for Trump. I got fed up with being slandered, smeared and patronised. My main reason was to make my country a free, sovereign nation state again in charge of its own laws, and borders, Nothing too radical you understand!
Tens of thousands of refugees fleeing Libya and dying while trying to cross the Mediterranean are also caused by AGW. It has nothing to do with our overthrow of the Libyan government.
Many of these stories (like Al Gore’s lies) skirt around much bigger topics, like, the U.S. gov., in bed with the media and lying to us about all of the important issues. The vast majority of our mainstream media (tv, newspapers, magazines, radio, etc.) is owned and controlled by 6 corporations. This, of course, means that unless you’re already consciously avoiding these mainline media sources, then most of the news and entertainment that makes it onto your screen and into your mind comes from a small pool of corporate sources, all of which play important roles in delivering propaganda, social programming and perpetual crisis narratives to the public.

Well he is right that it was the refugee crisis that tipped the balance – before it, David Cameron could reasonably expect that the referendum would go as he intended and the UK would stay in the UK. Sure, we are adding (via fossil fuel combustion) CO2 to the atmosphere, no question. How does that change the climate?
Yes, CO2 is a radiative molecule that absorbs and disperses energy in the far infrared around an amplitude of 15 microns for which the corresponding temperature is cold, really cold, over 50 degrees C below zero.
To what extent this property increases surface temperatures so as to change the climate is not determined. The evidence is lacking, there is no test and no accepted method of calibration.
There is evidence of warming, however that is consistent with the recovery from the last neo-glacial (The Little Ice Age). The numerical models suffer from mathematical imagination and the proxy reconstructions lack the decadal resolution for a valid comparison with the instrumental record.

I need some money for a new theory of mine. A 1.2 million dollar grant will suffice. My theory is that FDR decided to round up and put in camps Japanese-Americans because of … climate change. The Dust Bowl forced families to uproot and head west in the 1930’s. Most of these migrants/refugees were white (and since they were not elite coastal whites they were all racist), so with this influx of racist whites from the plain states mixed with a War forced FDR to round up Japanese-Americans and stick them in camps. I really need a 1.2 million dollar grant to study how climate change caused this travesty.

In few decades as the Brexit drills its way back into the past, we may find out that Brexitiers caused the American Civil War, and further along on the climate front, the Brexit was direct cause of the Little Ice Age.

I have been to Syria three times. It has several very large ancient cities. The rest is farmland and a lot of deserts or mountains so the amount of cultivable land is not that high.
There have been severe droughts throughout its history. Adjacent Jordan had a well travelled trade route through it, which in Roman times was controlled by them and a variety of others and there was endless warfare over water scarcity as the climate fluctuated.
In 1960 the population of Syria was 4 million. The rural population are quite poor and the govt not inclined to spend their limited finances (they are not an oil power) in improving the infrastructure.
Consequently when the population grew rapidly this caused severe rural problems and many people moved to the cities to look for work.
Add in two dictators-I met Assad’s father in the 1970’s -with the son increasingly ruthless and you have a combination of drought, rural poor seeking jobs, the govt unwilling to create new jobs and when the population reached over 22 million around 2010 you only need a very moderate downturn in climate for there to be a severe drought, no food and a further movement to the cities.
So in this case blame Malthus. The population was far too high to be supported by a variable climate. Syria would need the finest climate ever in its history and a far more sympathetic ruler willing to spend money to have avoided catastrophe.
Several decades ago Al gore wrote a fine book on the climate in the area and around the world called ‘earth in the balance.’ He has obviously forgotten it.

Al Gore’s hallucinations don’t make the list.
Despite his 12 reasons, he manages to avoid the fact that without Nigel Farage and UKIP there wouldn’t have been a referendum in the first place. UKIP winning the 2014 EU elections and their growing support (4 million votes in 2015) ensured that Cameron had next to sod all wiggle room.
In a way, he’s right – because Climate Change regulation is one of the primary reasons the population is finally beginning to see through the constant, destructive propaganda of the Progressives.

We got the Brexit referendum because Prime Minister David Cameron had just won a general election and a Scottish independence referendum using his Project Fear tactic. He thought he had a winning formula and could put the thorny EU question to rest for at least another 20 years.

Brexit campaigner Boris Johnson was actually pro-Europe but he wanted clear water between himself and Cameron just in case there was a leadership contest. Everyone knew they could not possibly win.
What Cameron forgot was that politicians of all parties had been promising referendums on Europe whenever they knew they were going to lose. It was always a vote winner. Often promised but never delivered.
Nearly half a century ago I voted to stay in to the Common Market. I then watched as it morphed in to a European super state. They never asked us if this was what we wanted, they just told us how lucky we were to live in a multicultural society.
I knew I would not live long enough to get another chance, so I voted Leave. No regrets.
Advice to Gore: “When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything begins to look like a nail.” You need a new tool.

Absolutely correct. Day in day out, every hour on the hour Britain heard how the EU was going limit their lives with this or that and all because of climate change.

Brexit was caused by climate change policy. According to a Lord Ashcroft poll study, 70% of leave voters ‘saw green measures as a force for ill’.
Seems to me drought and famine were endemic to Africa during the 70’s and 80’s when the planet was much cooler. Why is the drought in Syria blamed on global warming but the unprecedented crop yields around the world the last decade not?

Albert Gore hasn’t been the same since the details of the Clinton scandal came to light. Albert always thought of himself as one of the good guys; always trying to do the right thing (as much as circumstances allowed). Then things changed … big Al changed.
To begin with, poor Al was always a bit self conscious … he had always known that he didn’t quite fit in anywhere, but he couldn’t figure out why. Albert carried himself well (he knew was of course from a good, strong family), but there was always an underlying insecurity that gnawed at him. And he didn’t know why.
Bill Clinton was too cool to be a friend. Even when Albert joked to Bill about his massage “victories”, the closeness & comradery that he hoped to elicit was still lacking. Bill would smile and slap him on the back, but Albert still felt like an outsider.
Then one day Albert saw buddy Bill Clinton, big-shot Jeff Epstein, and token Vernon Jordan standing together laughing/sniggering & smoking cigars. Big Albert, feeling overly confident for some explainable reason, walked up and said Hi. All three welcomed him with smiles and accepting laughter, and even though he missed the joke Albert joined in the laughter. Bill slapped him on the back and said “Hey Al, have a cigar”. Emboldened even further Albert chewed the crispy plastic wrapper off the cigar and told Bill to give him a light. Albert noticed how the other guys looked at him with joyful admiration. All in high spirits they finished the cigars, joking, laughing, all together. For once Albert felt like one of the guys.
Then, less than a month later Albert Gore heard the Monica news, and all the lurid cigar details. “Damn”, he thought, “They never liked me. They were all laughing at me. Bill is an asshole. No one ever has liked me.”
That was the moment Albert went over to the dark side. He never again cared about being one of the good guys … always trying to do the right thing. Circumstances be damned, everyone be damned. Big Al changed; all because of one slightly used cigar and the joker that gave it to him.
I’m a bit surprised he hasn’t blamed his failed run for president on Global Warming. Chad is an oil rich nation. If they hadn’t hung back….

We all laugh at how stupid we think Gore is. Of course, the agenda that he’s pushing is, I believe, going to one day be looked at as one of the greatest scams perpetrated on the gullible. He knows this though, but it is the vehicle that has enabled him to accumulate many hundreds of millions (and many others behind this agenda). The Chicago Climate exchange alone likely made more millionaires than we can imagine. Gore is the typical career politician and saw an amazing opportunity to enrich himself. One only has to become familiar with Maurice Strong to understand that C02 was the vehicle to push an agenda.
