The art of green deception . . .about those record temperatures in Antarctica

Warren Blair writes:

On the same day (24 March 2015) in the real Antarctic (not Esperanza on the Trinity Peninsula) Australia’s Casey research station had its coldest 24 March day in 18 years (minus 12.7 °C).  That wasn’t mentioned and neither was any other interesting data like Casey’s 2015 March mean maximum temperature was the same as 1990 and lower than 1991, 1992, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2009.

Highest Antarctic region temperature was 35 years ago when CO2 was 340ppm (15% less than 2015 levels).

19.8°C was recorded on 30 January 1982 at Signy Research Station located at Borge Bay (near Esperanza Base) .

Highest Antarctic temperature for a Plateau station [>2500 meters] was 28 years ago.

-7.0°C was recorded on 28 December 1989 at an Automatic Weather Station (D-80) located inland from the Adélie Coast.

Highest Antarctic temperature for a continental station (outside the Antarctic Circle) was recorded in 2015.

17.5°C was recorded on 24 March 2015 at the Esperanza Base located on the Trinity Peninsula at Hope Bay (near Signy Research Station).

The unusually high Esperanza temperature is likely the result of a strong jet stream that brought a strong ridge of high pressure over the Antarctic Peninsula, allowing warm air from South America to push southwards over Antarctica.  Antarctic sea ice was at record-highs in 2014 and again in 2015 when modern records were shattered.  Sea ice then hit record-lows in 2016 as global average temperature got a boost from an unusually strong El Nino warming event combined with the Southern Annular Mode going strongly negative as admitted by NASA (the ultimate global warming alarmists).  Record Antarctic sea ice (in modern history) in 2014 and 2015 then record low sea ice in 2016 are weather events.  Anyone claiming otherwise will have to deal with the inconvenient fact of Antarctic sea ice returning to high levels and staying that way (for a time) when the current weather anomalies are over.

This is often the way with these screaming headlines “Warmest Evah’ …” . They usually pick one anomalous reading or select a time span the excludes previous extremes. And no perspective is given. This leaves the reader to assume this is the warmest ever in all of human history, not the last 20 years.

“Highest Antarctic temperature for a Plateau station [>2500 meters] was 28 years ago.”
This shouldn’t make us wonder:
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2015GL066749/full
On the plateau works the “inverse greenhouse effekt” and make it colder there with increasing GHG due to the fact that in a few month the surface is the coldest point in the whole troposphere up to the tropopause.

Apparently it doesn’t matter what is observed, it’s caused by CO2.
If there was an increasing trend of outgoing LW radiation on the Antarctic Plateau due to increasing CO2 wouldn’t there be a corresponding decreasing trend in the temperature?
Vostok Station (elevation 3,488 m) 1958 – 2000 shows no trend:

“Chris, don’t bother reading the linked paper, it’s open. You’ll find the answer! …”.
========================================
There was no need for snarkiness, I was asking a simple question.
I read the abstract which clearly says:
“We investigated this in detail and show that for central Antarctica an increase in CO2concentration leads to an increased long-wave energy loss to space, which cools the Earth-atmosphere system. These findings for central Antarctica are in contrast to the general warming effect of increasing CO2”.
The Arctic Plateau at Vostok 1958 — 2000 as CO2 concentration went from ~315 — ~375 ppm shows no overall trend.

Chris, please read more than the abstracts i.e. look at fig. 1 and 3 and youl’ll see that the GHE is not negative during the whole year. During sping and fall it’s so, during winter-and summertime the GHE is slightly positive. It matches to the trend in Vostock, doesn’t it?

As usual its in the Eye of the Beholder — in Boston we just broke the record for the warmest day ever in February —
Fri 2/24 Actual Temp 73° /46° Hist. Avg 40°/26° [with Thursday and Saturday quite warm as well]
Aha you say — that’s clearly a seminal event for the AGW Catastrophists

But — just as the media was trumpeting triumphantly came the Inconvenient Reality — within a few days in March — Boston and Worcester either tied for, broke or nearly broke a somewhat obscure record [Lowest High Temperature for the Day]. This is particularly embarrassing for the AGW crowd since one of the [Low-High] record dates back to the earliest official records [1870’s]
SAT 3/4 Actual Temp 21° /10° Hist. Avg. 42°/28° SUN 3/5 Actual Temp 32° /9° Hist. Avg. 42°/28°

There followed a week of slightly below “Average” temperatures — then to emphasize the point — things nearly repeated to the detail level:
SAT 3/11 Actual Temp 23° /10° Hist. Avg. 44°/30° SUN 3/12 Actual Temp 27° /9° Hist. Avg. 44°/30°

Just for Perspective February 2016 broke some of the all time lows and then there was Feb-March 2015 the year of Alt Time Monthly Snow

Looks like the alarmists are depending on stories from the places few people have been to exaggerate the fact that the warming has been detectable only in the higher latitudes during the winter months. Opportunistically cherry-picking weather anomalies to foreshadow trends is easier to get away with in places that nobody lives. If they tried to say the tropics or mid-lats are warming out of control, more folks would be suspicious from their own observation and less likely to believe a few pictures and statistical maneuvering.

Are you saying that the sea ice edge has reached an elevation of 2500′?

It would seem to me that the 2 terms “Sea Ice Edge” and “Elevation of 2500′” can only be relative during the summer months. Winter time sea ice edge is hundreds of miles away from any place on Antarctic that reaches an elevation of 2500′ except for the peninsula during winter and the ice shelve ends during the summer months but one small percentage of the continent isn’t ALL the continent

Good article.

March 24 2015 was just after the highest point of the solar cycle 24 TSI peak, the same peak that drove the 2015/2016 ENSO (heat now completely gone).

February 2015 was the strongest TSI month of the cycle, and by 3/24 was rising high again. Heat builds up as TSI rises/stays high.

Four of the years mentioned in comparison for high temp records there were during solar max years: 1991, 1992, 2001, 2002; and 2006 & 2009 were ENSO years.

The cold temp record on 3/24/15 was probably on the other side of the Antarctica Rossby wave whipped up by solar wind particles during the world famous St. Patrick’s Day Geomagnetic Storm, Kp=8, ultimately caused by a CME associated with a solar flare on March 15.

On 3/18 Spaceweather.com billed it as ‘The strongest geomagnetic storm of the current solar cycle’, and on 3/24 they wrote “For the 6th day in a row, a high-speed solar wind stream is buffeting Earth’s magnetic field.”

Perfect solar wind conditions for a polar vortex and all the winter weather extreme events one can imagine.

The NE US had a very cold March (weather.gov/car/March2015), following regular polar vortex outbreaks all that winter, as regular as the geomagnetic activity.

Solar particles and electromagnetic radiation work together, and solar weather effects are layered and time-dependent.

That’s how the sun can set both hot and low record temperatures on the same day, and these conditions of clashing hot air from the south with cold air from the north are very conducive for snow/rain records and tornado outbreaks with hailstorms too!

The northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula is as far south as Iceland is to the north and is also influenced by SSTs.
According to Wikipedia (on Iceland) “The highest temperature recorded was 30.5 °C (86.9 °F) at the Eastern fjords in 1939.” This is a corresponding northern latitude to the Danco coast and the Larsen B Ice Shelf in the SH.

Since it’s one of the last, is the border also a victim of global warming? But if it’s unguarded, why bother saving it?

Frank

Temperature doesn’t decrease with altitude above Antarctica. If you look into radiative transfer equation, a GHE only exists when temperature decreases with altitude!

dI = n*o*[B(lambda,T)-I]*dz

So rising CO2 doesn’t produce a radiative forcing over Antarctica. Radiative forcing elsewhere produces warmer air that can be transported to Antarctica. But the Ferrel cell near the poles produces air is generally descending over Antarctica and being swept out to sea near the surface. So the lack of warming in Antarctica doesn’t mean much for the role of CO2 in global warming. However, it does point out the idiocy of those desperately seeking evidence of warming in Antarctica so they claim warming is GLOBAL for purely POLITICAL reasons. (AOGCMs don’t project amplified warming at the South Pole as they do at the North Pole.)

Sorry for not including a reference. The lapse rate in Antarctic and radiative forcing calculated for every month is shown in the figures in this paper. The Figure below shows that in March, the emission in the CO2 bands is stronger than blackbody intensity radiation emitted by the surface. The lapse rate is more complicated than I implied above

On the average, the planet emits like a blackbody at 255 degK, because the average the photon escaping to space is emitted from about 5 kilometers above the surface where the temperature is 33 K colder. In Antarctica, the surface is sometimes colder and sometimes warmer than the CO2 in the upper atmosphere emitting photons to space.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/enhanced/figures/doi/10.1002/2015GL066749#figure-viewer-grl53769-fig-0002

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2015GL066749/full (no paywall)

Abstract: CO2 is the strongest anthropogenic forcing agent for climate change since preindustrial times. Like other greenhouse gases, CO2 absorbs terrestrial surface radiation and causes emission from the atmosphere to space. As the surface is generally warmer than the atmosphere, the total long-wave emission to space is commonly less than the surface emission. However, this does not hold true for the high elevated areas of central Antarctica. For this region, the emission to space is higher than the surface emission; and the greenhouse effect of CO2 is around zero or even negative, which has not been discussed so far. We investigated this in detail and show that for central Antarctica an increase in CO2 concentration leads to an increased long-wave energy loss to space, which cools the Earth-atmosphere system. These findings for central Antarctica are in contrast to the general warming effect of increasing CO2.

Re comment by Frank that altitude does not affect temperature in Antarctica
My info is annual mean temp in celsius in Antarctica is
at the South pole -2.3km above sea level
Summer -26
Winter -60
Whereas at sea level
Summer-12
Winter -45

That suggests
Either altitude causes the lower temps at the pole or
The moderating influence of the sea
causes the higher low temperatures at sea level
Or
Combination of both
Anyone have an explanation?

Okay charles, you will find that as antarctica is so dry, it was regarded as a good place to demonstrate the pure ghe of CO2. So it has proved, as no effect can be found. Pretty much what we say. We also say the Standard Atmosphere as a basis for understanding Atmospheric physics and meteorology has not altered since 1964. It has no need of radiative effects, CO2 or otherwise. Lapse rate and ground temperature then and now, are heedless of CO2. Apart from any sub-minute mass effect, and a tiny lowering of specific humidity, zilch. Regards charles, keep up your good humour.

I should add that 1964 was the ‘year of the quiet sun’, and much international research down south, or ‘near to home’ as I know it. Much was learnt, but the currently-collapsing AGW stupidity was fore-shadowed by research misapplied to ozone counts by a mistake in chemical reaction energy. That led to the false blaming of man for cyclic changes in ozone totals.
The current even quieter sun period should cause further study on this, fairly soon. It is about time.
