Recently, this blog passed a few milestones that I thought would be worth sharing with readers. For all of our critics and the vitriol all they throw our way, I challenge any of them to find a climate related blog that even comes close to the level of readership we enjoy here. We recently passed 300 million views and 2 million approved comments (more on that later).Here are screen grabs from the WUWT dashboard showing the numbers:
We also recently passed 40,000 email subscribers.
Given these events, I thought it might be time to refresh some of our readers on the most contentious part of operating this blog and that is the comments section. One of the downsides of being number one is that you’re also the biggest target. And being the biggest target we have a plethora of “anonymous cowards” who try to post comments here that are either wildly off-topic, inappropriate, angry, hateful, or otherwise uncivil. Some of the serial offenders use fake IDs, fake e-mail addresses, and even fake IP addresses to try to get their unwelcome point of view or hate-mongering across.
Because of that I’ve had to implement a strong filter to catch a lot of these people so that such inappropriate comments are not published. Occasionally some get through but fortunately readers tend to point them out and they get deleted by moderators or myself because they don’t adhere to site policy. This would be a good opportunity for all readers to review the site policy which you can view here.
Some of our critics say that we should allow for some of the other points of view to be discussed here such as barycentrism, atmospheric pressure theories, chemtrails, electric universe, geo-engineering theories, etc. etc. etc. In the earlier days we did some of that, and quite frankly a lot of that stuff proved to be nothing more than nonsense, and turned into food fights in the comment section. Been there, done that, not going to do it again. There are other venues and blogs to discuss those things, feel free to go there but don’t ask for them to be discussed here or make comments about those topics. They will be deleted. I don’t allow those topics here for the same reason I don’t share my home with a honey-badger; it’s not productive, it’s noisy, and somebody gets hurt in the end. And like a honey-badger meme, I just don’t care. 😉
For those of you that have wondered why some comments may disappear that contain what you seem to think are very innocuous words, this is the reason; some of the most persistent fake commenters use particular word combinations or phrases that are part of their writing style that we have identified, and sometimes regular commenters fall into that trap accidentally. Bear in mind that each comment is reviewed and if it meets the site policy it will be published. Occasionally there are some comments that may not fit into the categories defined by the site policy but don’t get published. That’s why we have a clause for “on an event basis” to cover such instances. There’s no need to e-mail us to say my comment disappeared! We will find it and recover it if it meets site policy, if you don’t see it after a few hours, you can consider it out of bound for site policy.
There is also no need to keep posting the same identical comment dozens of times hoping that if you just keep trying it will somehow get through. All that does is just create extra work for the moderation staff to clean out duplicate comments. Speaking of extra work, we cannot move comments between threads if you somehow accidentally commented on the wrong thread, and generally we don’t have time to edit people’s comments when they request such things. It would be better if you would just post a new comment directly below it saying the previous comment had an error and fix it, or just simply repost the appropriate comment in the appropriate thread.
Some of our critics say that we should publish all comments because otherwise we’re engaging in censorship. To that I say, bollocks. We wouldn’t have reached 2 million comments in my opinion if this blog allowed a Wild West policy for commentators, and I think the success speaks for itself in the numbers. I challenge any other blog that covers climate to show me their numbers.
I’d also like to make a note about e-mail subscribers. We don’t have a management tool for e-mail subscribers because the entire system is run by WordPress.com and it is designed to be self maintaining by the end-user. Therefore if you want to unsubscribe you have to do that yourself. Each e-mail that comes from each blog post contains a link that will allow you to unsubscribe if you look carefully.
Finally, I’d like to mention that occasionally some of the ads here cause some readers problems due to the ads injecting inappropriate code or badly formed code. Over the past year I have worked very closely with WordPress.com to help them weed out some of the advertisers that have done stupid things with their ads like injecting code that causes the scrolling the jump right back to the ad every 5 seconds. Largely as a result of complaints from our readers about these problems and due to the efforts I put into troubleshooting and relaying the information to WordPress.com staff, I’m happy to announce that about two months ago they implemented a “predatory code filter” that weeds out these kinds of advertiser tricks. I’m happy to report that since this has been done the number of complaints I received has dropped to near zero.
That said, I still occasionally get complaints from readers about pages being slow or pages not loading completely, etc. a lot of this has to do with browsers and the state of the computer hosting their web browser. I have noted a common theme in many complaints like this which is: fear of upgrade. The Internet is an evolving animal and if you don’t keep your web browser updated and most importantly your computer updated you may find that you get left behind at the back of the herd. For those that are interested, I consider the best browser for viewing this website is Chrome with at least 4 GB of memory and processor that’s running at least 1.5 GHz. About two years ago Firefox was my browser of choice but it had become buggy and unstable and I abandoned it. If you are still using Firefox you might want to consider downloading Chrome for a better experience.

Thankyou Anthony for being a part of my life for the last several years. On the subject of adverts, I used to find wuwt impossibly slow to load, until I started using an ad-blocker. I appreciate that you get an income from the adverts, and that the ad-blocker deprives you of that, for which I apologise, but unless I upgrade my ancient laptop I don’t see an alternative.

I use Chrome with AdBlocker and still get a few ads on WUWT — not annoying and keying on a product I’ve recently searched. I wrote of HRC’s Granddaughter Charlotte a few days ago and a pushed ad came for a piece of women’s clothing.
I’ve only used ABP for a couple of years and the current counts says 272,679 total ads.
When WUWT first had ads, I clicked through many hoping some of them would go to the bottom line. About that time very annoying ads began in great number. I covered them with an onscreen calculator or something similar. Then, about 2 years ago came ABP. I consider it self defense.
WUWT does have rather a lot of ads, but I have my blocker set to allow everything there because (1) WUWT is the sort of blog we want to encourage, and (2) the ads are relatively well-behaved (none of the annoying pop-ups you get at legacy-news-media sites). If that ever stopped being true I would block those.
I had to install AdBlocker specifically so that WUWT pages would actually load using IE browser. I considered this a shame, since WUWT is one of the few sites I’d support the use of advertising, in return for valuable content. However, I won’t jump on that treadmill of continually updating my browser, simply because advertising “technology” keeps finding new ways of messing up existing browsers. I’ll give them an inch, but shut them out if they want to take a mile.
WUWT is my favorite site. Kudos, kudos, kudos on the work all you folks do for us, and without doubt, all humanity.

I’ve noticed for the past few weeks that WUWT pages never seem to stop loading and I have to manually stop loading (“Connecting…” at bottom left of screen on Chrome 57, latest Mac Sierra). Site ads are not disabled in any way. Firefox same issue, but it eventually does finish loading.

It keeps my system using about 0.4% of the CPU or less. That’s not an issue for my CPU, but it might be for others. My sister still has a machine with Windows Vista (~2006). I’ve offered to pay for a new system so she can visit, with ease, all the WUWT posts I suggest.

My guess is that some ad is refreshing itself so the vendor is getting some idea about how long people may be having their ad on display.
However, I tended to have several WUWT pages open at once and deemed all that activity annoying. Sometimes a page (like the home page, like right now) will do that frequent reload trick, some times a refresh stops it. I assume the random ad rotation explains that.
So I have a lot fewer pages open these days.
www opso.noaa.gov.. takes a while to load for me on WUWT.
On those occasions when I’ve noticed that the loading arrow is sticking around for a long time, I’ve also noticed a message in the bottom left corner about waiting for a proxy tunnel.
PiperPaul, I noticed it — showed “connecting to http://www.ospo.noaa.gov” at the page bottom but would never complete. Pretty sure that was a feed to one of the side-bar widgets and not really necessary.
So just added 0.0.0.0 http://www.ospo.noaa.gov to the bottom of my hosts file (windows 10) & that stops it.

Neither Firefox nor Chrome browsers will support older MSFT Windows operating systems like XP or Vista after September, IIRC. I hate the newer Windows OSs, one of which I suffer through on my Spanish language laptop.
I’m reluctant to join the Google Borg, so I still use Firefox. IMO whatever problems I encounter are because of my outdated MSFT OS, rather than the much-updated browser.
I’m also not keen on the Apple Borg, although I use their phones and tablets. Which pretty much leaves Linux, as the least Borgy operating system. I used to use Opera browser, but it’s now owned by Chinese investors, so suspect.
I love Linux because I love freedom.
You can try Linux without actually installing it on your system. (You copy it onto a USB dongle or a CD. It’s a free download.) If you do want to install it, but don’t want to lose your existing stuff, you can install it alongside Windows. (That’s called dual boot.)

I do not think you did loose any data, you just could not start the still existing linux from MBR any more, an easy repair with a boot cd or usb to reboot your linux again could have fixed things. Once you start dual booting, this is basic stuff, and creating a regular backup of your data anyway also.

For anyone interested, I’ve been using SRWare Iron (Mac version) for many months now.
It’s based on the free Chrome source but without the objectionable tracking habits of Chrome and seems to work without issue . . sort of like the Donald Trump of browsers. 😉
There’s the usual MacOS, Linux, Windows and Android versions and the Chrome extensions I use also appear to work fine with Iron.

Thanks for the tip on Chrome and Firefox. Meanwhile, I found a couple tricks to make
Firefox less buggy:
1) Reduce the reloading frequency by the Session Restore feature. Type about:config into the address bar, and scroll down to the item browser.sessionstore.interval, and change the value from 15000 (15 seconds) to something greater such as 900000 (15 minutes).
Or, disable session restore loading by changing these in about:config:
browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes from 1 to 0
browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo from 10 to 0
browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo from 3 to 0
browser.sessionstore.restore_on_demand from true to false
browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash from true to false
Another thing to do is go to Bookmarks, Bookmarks Toolbar, and delete Latest Headlines. Yet another is to pare down any RSS feed loading that you have installed.
If things get buggy anyway, I found it helps to flush the cache, which is an option in deleting history.

Anthony, I think the most valuable service provided here is the moderation of the comments and, most importantly, moderation that has allowed coherent arguments from all sides. This is the only site that has a comment section that actually engages in real debate regarding the data and the theories. Yes, the comment section has its gadflies that add next to nothing to the debate, but on the whole the comment section debates help educate a reader as to the strengths and weaknesses in all the positions.

Climate science shouldn’t be a question of left or right wing politics. It should be based on facts. Unfortunately most of left wings representatives are defenders of the AGW thesis.

Once I pointed out the issue, most of the offending postings were deleted and the have been further incidences. Congrats! And OT: the comment form is missing on your Tips and notes page. Here’s something potentially interesting. I have been checking the Skeptical Science trend calculator now and then. It uses Foster and Rahmstorf 2011 methodology to calculate error margins for temperature trends in various datasets. Despite the ENSO peak in the end, almost all of the available datasets continue to show a “pause” (no warming exceeding the uncertainty margin, using the calculator’s default settings) during the last 12 to 25 years.
This month, the Berkeley land-only dataset disappeared from calculator. It was the longest dataset available, starting in 1752. It indicated a “pause” of about 20 years, the longest pause in the non-satellite datasets. The NOAA land-only dataset was removed too. It had a pause of over 15 years. It seems likely that their trendless periods would have extended with the El Nino waning.
At the same time HadCRUT4 and NOAA land+ocean were labelled “non-global”. Here the calculator seems to disagree with its data sources. The CRU describes HadCRUT4 as “a global temperature dataset”. NOAA’s respective wording is “global surface temperature dataset”. UAH 5.6 which is still getting monthly updates was labeled “non-current”.
The only datasets without a >10y pause (as defined above) at the moment are NOAA land+ocean and GISTEMP.
The calculator was written by Dr. Kevin Cowtan. The data is mirrored on his personal web page. Wayback machine has archived versions before and after the change: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.ysbl.york.ac.uk/~cowtan/applets/trend/tempdata.xml
Has Trump’s administration started the long-feared erasure of climate data? Are his dark agents literally twisting Kevin Cowtan’s arm and threatening the Skeptical Science team? I mean, what other reason could they have for hiding some of the longest datasets showing a continuing 15 to 20 year global warming pause. The guys need our support!

To me and many of my colleagues who enjoy your outstanding site on a regular basis, it is a source of wonderment and joy that, from our seemingly remote locations in Africa and other distant corners of our planet, we can communicate from hour to hour, and often within minutes, with anyone in the world.
When I started my career as a medical entomologist over fifty years ago, I used to write letters on a typewriter from South Africa to my contacts at the British Museum in London, and the Smithsonian in Washington. If I got a letter back within three weeks, that was really fast!
And in those days, one of the life-changing, earth-shattering technical breakthroughs was the IBM Golf-ball typewriter! Wow man, you could change the golf-ball and type ITALICS – how awesome was that!
Regrettably, better speed does not mean better quality, so your moderation is welcomed and supported.

By the way, when one searches “wuwt” or “watts up with that” Google provides a search page that open with a prominent boxed Wiki link right at the top that says, “Watts Up With That? (or WUWT) is a blog promoting climate change denial that was created by Anthony Watts in 2006… (my bold).”
Google is promoting Wiki’s outright lie; most likely a William Connolley composition. There’s no helping WC, but shame on Google.

I have visited this site almost every day since about 2008. I was a regular reader of Christopher Booker in the Sunday Telegraph and he praised WUWT in one of his articles questioning global warming. I visited the site and became a regular. About a year later, the ClimateGate story broke. I think Anthony was on a plane at the time. I shall never forget the drama as the disgraceful behaviour of a number of climate scientists became exposed as the emails became public. The site readership soared.
Those of us interested in the science that affects our climate, and who wish to separate the genuine from the false alarmism, owe a huge debt to Anthony, his moderators and guest posters. Thanks to you all.
I was trying to remember how I first came across WUWT, years ago now. You have given me the reminder that it was almost certainly via Christopher Booker in the Sunday Telegraph (UK) and I learnt so much over the years. My elder brother Dave recommended WUWT to me many years ago. I came over to have a look and I stayed to be educated and entertained. I have had the honour of having a small article posted on the front page following some information that I provided, greatly enjoyed the back-and-to (usually civilized and often amusing) between posters and greatly enjoyed not only the knowledge but also the wit and writing ability displayed by Willis and others.

And it is spirited information, due to the diverse but intelligent cadre (Yes, there are exceptions!) of individuals who come here. Unless I have something specific in mind, WUWT is always my first stop on the web.

WordPress works fine for me in Chrome or Firefox. Microsoft keeps claiming that Edge is safer, has anybody migrated to it that could give an opinion?
I use Firefox and Chrome with no problems loading WUWT. Indeed, WUWT is one of the fastest-loading sites I visit. Very rarely a problem.
Without WUWT the climate debate would have been much less balanced and open. You have opened a door that has allowed thousand of other voices to speak and be heard.

i too forsook {a word?} Firefox for Chrome about three years ago because it was and unstable. Fully deleting addons and reinstalling essentials or entire browser didnt help. And then the employees booted out a founding genius for one political statement.
Now I am back with Firefox (new version) because Chrome has become buggy and unstable.
And the last thing I want to spend time doing is maintaining a browser.
Visit everyday, get all excited when the topics are really good, sometimes stay way too long (Climatgate, Gleick). Anthony you are like a trusted dentist–no concern just do what you think is right.
I was in a bar not long ago with a full mini of beer and a basket of wings. An IT guy I had seen before sat down to join me and after chatting hockey for a few minutes asked me if I ever heard of the electric universe….long night pour moi, thank God I had beer!

A hint concerning Firefox: many problems might be due to the ad blockers! I have no problem at all when using it on WordPress-based blogs like WUWT or Clim etc, but I never could manage to enter comments at Nick’s blog (based on Google ware), and thus use Chrome there instead.
How great is it to have a blog owner take the time to explain, in detail, every thing that’s going on to the people that post!!

1. A comment rating a la Jo Nova.
2. The ability to edit a comment: no-one is perfect so typos sometimes slip through and a simple edit is much better than another comment.

I even appreciate your description of your hearing problems and Stryker’s technology because I have an ear which rarely works . I’ve thought of an in-the-ear aid with the entire frequency_x_amplitude space tunable from your “phone” as an example of an extreme project for which CoSy would be competitive .
But I will continue to argue for constructing a quantitative computable physical “audit” trail from the energy impinging on a planet to its surface temperature .
So far , I have not seen the equations , which should easily fit on one page , which explain how some electromagnetic phenomenon “traps” heat in excess of its “radiative balance” temperature determined by it spectra and its sources’ .spectra . I would expect such a summary in introductions to any other branch of applied physics , eg : semiconductors .
I will continue to press to simply computably understand the differential you plug into your Navier Stokes style voxel in your model , nothing more complicated . Because mapping that over a sphere is rather trivial in an APL .
Particularly given that gap in the computations , to rule the other macroscopic force and energy , gravity , out of the discussion and thus out of the equations itself leaves a gap .
I know in practice , despite your listing of taboo subjects above , you do not filter rational discussions which include discussions of the implied taboo parameters . And that is a strength of WUWT . It is the most general discussion seeking to pin down that “audit trail” .

I usually have no problems when using Chrome but an occasional post does seem to use up a lot more CPU time than most sites with only a few adverts, which causes the computer to slow markedly.

Wish I had time to read all the posts and comment threads, but—alas!—the creek has become a mighty river. Still, I try to take a dip every day. One day I’d like to see a Reference Page devoted to The Basics of Skeptical Climatology, to which one could refer laymen who want a succinct explanation of the problems with the CAGW position and how to counter the smug assertions of its proponents. I refer people to WUWT, but fear they will be overwhelmed by its often-technical content and deterred by its appeal to an in-group of readers and contributors.
Re computers, I have no problems with WUWT on my 2009 iMac running OS X 10.9.5 and Safari 9.1.3. Runs just fine!

I don’t use the email subscription service, but I do follow WUWT on Twitter. Now I know that a lot of people have a rather low opinion of Twitter, and for the most part I agree. I don’t tweet, but I’ve found Twitter to be useful as a news-ticker of sorts. I follow a handful of news and info sources, including WUWT. So when a tweet from WUWT appears with a link to the latest article, I can read it right away if I have a moment.
As for Firefox, I haven’t had any issues of note with the WUWT site. I think it helps if you keep the add-ons to an absolute minimum.

Anthony, congratulations on reaching another milestone. Your website is indeed an incredible success. My hope is that it is producing enough income to reward you properly for this accomplishment. It feel like a MS level student when I read the articles and comments. I feel as though all of we daily readers should be invited to our graduation ceremony soon. But, I will not stop my daily studies here in this lifetime.
Happy Birthday ! After lurking around several climate blogs for a year or so I have settled on 2 which I look at most days, this one and Dr.Curry’s Climate etc. I have recently started commenting here and , yes, have already had a comment disappear. Not moaning – it’s a learning curve, but whether the workings of WordPress and moderator action are more or less difficult to fathom than atmospheric physics is, as yet, undecided (need more data).
Anthony’s work here speaks for itself, and the site stats are mega impressive but I cannot help wondering what it has actually achieved in it’s 10 years. Is some kind of survey in order to see how many percentage points the 97% consensus has been reduced ? My initial straw poll would seem to suggest -3% (with a 95% certainty) but according to my model we should be seeing something like -9% owing to consensus forcing.

For 64-bit Windoze users (v 7, 8, 10…), there are 64 bit browsers available. The difference between 32-bit and 64-bit browsers is that 32 bit programs are limited to using a 4GB address space, while 64 bit programs are limited to what the operating system supports. In browser world, this relates directly to the amount of concurrent TABS you can open, as well as the size of the code the web page is trying to stuff into the browser. This does not necessarily lead to a performance increase.There are 64-bit browsers available for pretty much all browsers out there, but they are not usually offered as a default because many users still have only 4GB of memory.
In the free market of ideas I think Anthony’s forum is a leader.

Using a Chromebook and have never had problems loading. It may take 30′ or so to complete but the experience is as smooth as honey.

In addition, this page in the chorus of the Klimablogs is the powerful bass voice, which however never neglects the principle of freedom of expression and fairness also for other thinkers. Very much different than other blogs with the same themes.
Visiting WUWT has been and hopefully will continue to be a virtual daily habit of mine. May the good work of this blog not cease!

I think there are several reasons for the deserved success of WUWT, not only a lot of hard work necessary to run this site (and I am sure it is a lot of hard work) but also… hmm… the fact that moderators of WUWT have some brains, and are not sadistic control freaks akin to those heels who usually wriggle themselves into moderator positions on other forums.

Thanks for the blog. 10 years ago I had drunk the Kool Aid and was a “True Believer” of AGW Seeing the facts presented here, plus personally downloading and looking at the “dancing data” of GISS has changed my mind.
I run linux, so I don’t worry about drive-by-downloads. I don’t use an ad blocker per se, but I do block Facebook’s trackers by IP-address range at my firewall. Having an ad show up on your page is one thing. Being followed across the web, via “Like Buttons” even though I’ve never had a Facebook account, crosses the line.
I use Pale Moon browser, a fork of Firefox, which embodies the good-ole-days of Firefox before they went off the deep end. Full disclosure… I’ve volunteered for the project. I do a 32-bit linux SSE build, which runs on older Pentium-3 class machines.
One question about blocked posts. There were a couple of articles here about the demands by the lib-left to “re-educate” non-believers, send deniers to jail, take down “denier blogs”, etc. I made a couple of posts, both of which disappeared. I believe that the posts were perfectly on topic for those threads. They had 3 URLs…
1) About a White House internal report during Bill Clinton’s presidency, expressing fear that the internet was allowing the masses, to have access to “unfiltered news”, and “bypassing the media gatekeepers”. This was 3 years before Monica Lewinsky.
2) Hillary’s musings/whining about a lack of “internet gatekeepers”, at the time the Lewinsky scandal hit the news. The MSM had killed the story, but an unknown clerk by the name of Matt Drudge broke the story on his website. The rest, as they say, is history.
3) More recently, during the presidential campaign, an email sent by Hillary’s campaign to supporters, saying that the Breitbart website had no right to exist, and strongly implying that it would be shut down soon after Hillary’s victory.
What exactly did I trigger? The posts were relevant to the topic of the article.
Let us remember that — not so long ago — there was one kind of Scientific forum (usually respective to the subject) whereby new ideas, challenges, debate cd be adduced asnd thrashed-over, in the interests of furthering the Science concerned.
Seems to me that “Climate Science” has a multiplicity of (somewhat– in many instances) relevant validity to the advancement of Same. Climate Science is analogous to the Subject of ‘Art’ insofar as there’s a myriad of experts in their respective fields who can claim parochial expertise (without refutation) but the ultimate question of: “What is ‘Art’?” still remains as elusive as ever.
Transpose this to ” What is Climate Science” and —- I submit to you, dear readers —- that the answer is as ephemeral as to the Q. “What is ‘Art’?”
Why, Andy Warhol answered this question long ago:
“Art is anything you can get away with.”
I follow this site and read, not to present or argue, just to learn.

I merely echo the sentiments of many of those above.
This website is a true source of science knowledge and informed debate that has raised the bar, and continues to raise the bar even higher, in terms of credible discussion on the issues presented.
Science – real science – fought a long and treacherous path over several hundred years to have its potential value and contributions recognised. But within a generation, the good name of science has been dragged through the mud by it’s old enemy – blind ideology. May polls reveal that general trust in ‘scientists’ is diminishing largely due to the obvious discrepancies between what the attention and rent-seeking ‘environmental scientists’ are saying and what ordinary people see happening. This is disgraceful.
As an earth scientist I am truly grateful for the presence of this site and others like it. They point out to those willing to seek truth, that no matter how loudly idealogues scream, the (properly conducted) scientific method has the ability to determine fact from fantasy and can help society progress with decision-making based on facts, not fallacies. History has shown that we all benefit if we follow that path.
I do hope that you continue this website for ‘as long as it takes’ – for that the the timeline that wins wars – and all of the amazing contributors here do not let real science and the resultant truth ‘go gentle into that good night’.

Congrats, Mr. Watts!! I’ve been lurking on these pages since early 2008 when Al Gore’s movie half scared me to crap. I decided to research it myself and first found your surfacestations.org page and realized that much of what was going on was questionable.
Thru continued reading, studying and observation, I’ve come to realize that a lot of what’s going on is nearly, if not outright, criminal.

I likely won’t post too often due to running “mom and dads taxi service” for boys active in sports, and also because I am what I would call a slow thinker. I’m the kind of fella who thinks about things for quite a while before making a comment. Most of the time, and the reason why I’ve never commented in the past, is that by the time I have formulated my response/answer/witty remark, the thread is so far down the line that comments aren’t rolling in anymore.
I’m just impressed at the open-mindedness that appeciates such a broad range of political views.
One of the things that surprises me whenever I look at some of the early WUWT posts is that many of the commenters from back then are still here. Just another metric of WUWT’s success.
Humbled that my “name” is mentioned in such company. Most of my comments are attempts at comic relief.
But a couple of the “many, many more” that deserve mention and who haven’t been around for awhile are Gail Combs and Jimbo.
And, of course, REP, the model of what a “Mod” here is and should be.
He didn’t just care about what someone said but also the someone who said it.

I agree that moderating comment threads is critical to keep things on-topic. However I hope that moderation continues to be on the lenient side. I feel that comments and arguments from ‘the other side’ should be encouraged – no matter how irritating – and even ones bordering on rude allowed. It is the best way by far to expose the weaknesses in alarmist orthodoxy, sharpen sceptical argument and hopefully bring more people round to a more questioning point of view.

Thank you for an astonishing site. Facilitating a (relatively) civil and rational discussion on the turbid waters of the internet is difficult to say the least.
Given my daily interactions with people, I find my self somewhat surprised and encouraged that there are in fact quite a few folks out there that want to, like to, and are capable of discussing a plethora of topics with a modicum of civility and disciplined thought. I have learned a lot here by following discussions and the embedded links to other sites and papers.
Anonymity is both a curse and occasionally a blessing. With obvious exceptions, I find that any discussion or interaction where both parties are at least somewhat identified greatly facilitates the above more constructive interactions. Would you consider a periodic post with the sole purpose of encouraging this? Straw man suggestion: Post Title : “Civility”. Discussion (summary):
The purpose of this post is to facilitate civility in discussions. To this end, you are encouraged to post your real name and a VERY brief summary of who/where/what you are. If you wish not to provide your real name and any other identifying data, then you are encouraged to provide some discussion as to why not, and why you can still engage in constructive interactions.

Marohasy doesn’t buy it, BioCabinet doesn’t buy it, hockeyschtick doesn’t buy it. Both ACS tool kit and Spence Weart say RGHE is a poor analogy, that it doesn’t describe how the atmosphere works, it doesn’t even describe how a real greenhouse works. Spencer says it’s the physical enclosure that traps convection that keeps it warm, not some kind of RGHE thermal diode. (I have a kewl garage experiment that demonstrates the power of convection. Send me your E-mail for a copy of the write up.)
Convection is the primary method that moves energy from the surface, water vapor takes over in the atmosphere, CO2/RGHE is barely a footnote. Even the surface temperature of Venus can be explained without RGHE.

Adding to the “Δ33C without an atmosphere” (see attached) that completely ain’t so is the example of Venus.
Venus, we are told, has an atmosphere that is almost pure carbon dioxide and an extremely high surface temperature, 750 K, and this is allegedly due to the radiative greenhouse effect, RGHE. But the only apparent defense is, “Well, WHAT else could it BE?!”
Well, what follows is the else it could be.
Venus is half the distance to the sun so its average solar constant/irradiance is twice as intense as that of earth, 2,615 W/m^2 as opposed to 1,368 W/m^2.
But the albedo of Venus is 0.77 compared to 0.31 for the Earth or Venus 601.5 net ASR (absorbed solar radiation) W/m^2 compared to Earth 943.9 net ASR W/m^2.
The Venusian atmosphere is 250 km thick as opposed to Earth at 100 km. Picture how hot you would get stacking 2.5 more blankets on your bed. RGHE’s got jack to do with it, it’s all Q = U A dT.
The thermal conductivity of carbon dioxide is about half that of air, 0.0146 W/m-K as opposed to 0.0240 W/m-K so it takes twice the dT/m to move the same kJ from surface to ToA (top of atmosphere, 100 km, 62 miles).
Put the higher irradiance & albedo (lower Q = lower dT), thickness (greater thickness increases dT) and conductivity (lower conductivity raises dT) all together: 601.5/943.9 * 250/100 * 0.0240/0.0146 = 2.61.
So, Q = U A dT suggests that the Venusian dT would be 2.61 times greater than that of Earth. If the surface of the Earth is 15C/288K and ToA is effectively 0K then Earth dT = 288K. Venus dT would be 2.61 * 288 K = 748.8 K surface temperature. No S-B BB RGHE hocus pocus need apply.
Simplest explanation for the observation.

I just discovered WUWT 4-5 months ago and is a great website for lay people such as myself to understand the multi disciplinary subjects required to truthfully begin to understand natural climate change vs. the AGHW speculation that humans are now the main driver of climatic systems. Obviously, history will record what really happened with past, present and future climate and really what causes what. We are just at the beginning of this epic quest, but I think the lesson here is that there must be a truthful and civil debate on all matters relating to understanding this very complex subject and so far for the most part, it appears this web site has accomplished just that: a civil discussion on all of these crucially important subjects.
However, I am a bit worried that some of the articles (and comment section) tends to be now slipping into another sinister form of denialism (since USA election) into what the skeptics had originally said about the alarmists, that the fix was in for CO2 being the main culprit driving climate. Now it seems many essays and comments tend to just say that all renewable energy is bad, and nothing ever was wrong with fossil fuels. That is a disappointing turn of events, since in the long term view even if carbon based fuels don’t have much to with climate change, when fossil fuel price increases begin to cause major conflict with the global economy, then we squandered more time and resources in not finding replacements for fossil fuels. While fossil fuels will dominate our energy mix for decades to come, in the long term scheme of things, fossil fuels will diminish just as whale oil did 150 years ago. And that future economic turmoil may dwarf any real global warming/climate change that may or may not have ever happened. I believe this future fact is the 800 pound gorilla in the room and so far, not even discussed.
I just hope that this space will not become its own antithesis, and the mob will rule over future forms of solving energy and climate adaptation to the only thing we really know for sure, that the climate has and is always changing.

The first step in any solution is correctly identifying and articulating the real problem.
It’s not just fossil fuels, but any hydrocarbon/carbon based fuel that produces CO2.
Yes, fossil fuels will run short at some time in the future, or so we’ve been hearing for decades now, and that projected date just keeps receding further into the future.
So what, exactly, is the real problem? An energy marketplace distorted by elitist hallucinations about how the earth should be? What fuels we should use? When? Where? At what “reasonable” price?
Or should US gasoline prices cease being subsidized by the blood of our Marines in Fallujah?

Of course neo-Marxists, which most climate alarmists are, will claim that you have money and they don’t (It’s Marxist presumptions of fixed-pie economics and drive-to-the-bottom ethics, which are based on denial of the human mind).
I’m reading WUWT about 4 years now. I have found it to be a truly great and diverse resource. I’m Irish and in absolute despair about the media in this country. This website (despite the forays into annoying topics like Catholic bashing or Brexit) is a fantastically refreshing and open website of ideas and viewpoints (diametrically the opposite of the Irish and Western media generally). It gives me great hope for the future where I had previously been in despair. A completely random list of some things this website has introduced me to in that period that come to mind are:
Adam Curtiss’s documentaries (they’re fantastic)
Thomas Nagle’s Mind and Cosmos
Hillary Clinton’s serious illness that the media were hiding (what else are they hiding?)
The statistical language R (I now use it at work)
Bayesian data analysis
J Haidt’s The Righteous Mind (I think that was from here but might have been a link to a link to a link..)
And many many others that don’t come to mind now…
I have had orders more intellectual stimulation from this site than I have had from the Irish (and sometimes British) media after following it for over 40 years. Well done and thank you many times over. Keep up the good work and the excellent (EXCELLENT!!) moderating.
