NYT Blames Winter Chill on Global Warming

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

As temperatures plummet in Eastern states, NYT has published their usual screed on why global warming is responsible for cold winters.

Feeling a Chill? Blame the Polar Vortex. And Global Warming.

On Thursday, temperatures on the East Coast are expected to plummet, and some people — fellow journalists and weather broadcasters, we’re looking at you — may start talking about a “polar vortex.”

We thought you might want to know what the polar vortex is, and what it’s not.

(And we wanted to pre-empt the inevitable chatter about climate change that usually crops up when the thermometer drops — “It’s bone-shakingly cold, how could the Earth be warming?” We’ll tell you how.)

Read more: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/15/science/feeling-a-chill-blame-the-polar-vortex-and-global-warming.html

New York Times published similar articles blaming global warming for extreme winter weather in 2014, 2013, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008

How much more of this global warming driven extreme cold can we take?

As you say, a number of people have suggested that Global warming would be used to explain a natural event that has happened numerous times in the past. It used to be called the polar express, or arctic express or some such similar names.
It has always happened and always will. It is weather and simply something that frequently comes with winter.

The weather office calls them by the unromantic name of cold wave. The wiki article has a list going back to the 1800s. As you say, we’ve always had cold waves.
When people point out that we still have cold waves in spite of global warming, the alarmists patiently explain to us that black is white. ‘Experts’ have always done that. When he invented newspeak, George Orwell was working from experience. It’s no wonder that people don’t trust ‘experts’ any more.

Despite the headline this is what the article has to say about it being caused by global warming.

Some studies suggest that climate change could actually make these frigid waves of Arctic air more common, a result of shrinking sea ice. However, other scientists remain skeptical of this theory.

Most people will just read the headline, dismiss it a BS and stop taking any notice of what NYT tells them about climate.
Those that do read it will realise it largely unfounded and speculative claim that it “could” make it more frequent. and stop taking any notice of what NYT tells them about climate.

Yes, but with galloping global warming, shouldn’t this be moderated somewhat? Shouldn’t we ignorant plebes be able to say, yeah but it’s not as bad as it used to be? I want to tell you it is -25C here in eastern Ontario. The rivers are frozen. The whole country is frozen. You can walk from the Panhandle of Texas to India on frozen ground or ice.comment image
After all the trillions spent and the hysteria, shouldn’t we by now be able to detect GW without thermometers even. If our children weren’t supposed to know what snow was by now (Dr. Viner of Met Office early in the new millennium) and we are getting more and more….Shouldn’t Manhattan’s Hudson River highway be under water by now? If polar amplification is warming the poles at 3 times the rest of the globe, shouldn’t polar vortices be a little balmier? The average global land temperature dropped an unprecedented 1C since May. I suggest it is still going down. And look at the SSTs:

This was all explained to everyone in the Hollywood epic “The Day After Tomorrow”. It has to do with polar ice melting, changing the salinity of the oceans, which then stops the Gulf current and freezes the Northern Hemisphere. The eminent climate authority Dennis Quaid explains the whole thing. New York freezes solid in a matter of days. Everyone survives by burning books, then gets airlifted to Mexico by a grateful, but humbled, President of the US (who is welcome in Mexico because of NAFTA).
There. Any questions? I can do this stuff all day… 😎
PS: For our next trick, we drop thermonuclear weapons on the Antarctic, restarting the Gulf current. Or was that a different movie?

Greg, I agree, the article is more balanced, but doesn’t excuse the headline. It explicitly says “Blame Global Warming” right there at the top of the page. Saying that this doesn’t disprove the global warming issue is true, as it’s just weather. However, the message is clear that this is occurring because of gloabl warming, which is false.

Tony,
Open ridicule and derision of the climate charlatans and other purveyors of Climate Propaganda are quite appropriate and a necessary function in a free society.
Yes, we can attack them on their fake science with science and history, but when their claims are so stupid (as in floods, droughts, cold waves/heat waves never happened before CO2 rose above 300ppm) it becomes that ridicule is the best weapon against the climate fraud that everyone can understand.
If you want science all the time, I suggest Judith Curry’s blog.

———————-
That is the main point for the AGW-ACC to be discarded as a “fantasy” and fictional in principle, not possible at all anyway, in principle;
I mentioned the ACC because in the AR4 of IPCC is clearly stated as a claim under the ACC as per a way to explain AGW, that as there was only warming observed with no any much cooling elsewhere in the system that could account as compensating for, than the GW must be a ACC-AGW……human made and not natural/
Actually by that kind of approach to explanation claiming, ending up with a ACC-AGW as a condition where the Newton’s Third Law is bridged and not holding anymore for the system in question, aka the very end and :”destruction”, break down of the natural functioning of the system.
Systems and functios that do not hold to the Newton’s Third Law do break down and crash.
In principle that what ACC-AGW stand for….silly, as far as I can tell.

The NYT is so far right with it’s explanation, that the cause of a sudden snowfall is because of a disturbed function of the polar cycle and can’t be used as a proof of global cooling.
They state even correctly, that the same function of the vortex is causing a warmer arctic.
What they don’t tell: Even in former “colder” years the same vortex was the cause for snow.
But they forget the whole argument, when the arctic gets warm

Isn’t it a fact that during the ice ages the Arctic Ocean was open most of the time? Where else could the precipitation necessary for the build-up of ice over the Baltic regions and North America come from? Haven’t they found 50,000 years’ old human settlements along the coasts of the Arctic Ocean proving that?

December 16, 2016 3:02 am

This is the NYT headline:
Feeling a Chill? Blame the Polar Vortex. And Global Warming.
But inside the article, the are not so sure about being caused from global warming.
“Some studies suggest that climate change could actually make these frigid waves of Arctic air more common, a result of shrinking sea ice. However, other scientists remain skeptical of this theory.
And the earth is definitely warming: Temperature records show that, by the end of last year, the earth’s surface had warmed by about 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit since the 19th century. But even though the earth’s surface is warming, scientists say that winter will still exist.”
So inside the article they didn’t use wrong facts. It’s the subtle way how it is written who may convince people.

IF it were only wintery in the US that would be weather. However, as most that frequent this site know, global temperatures have fallen by 0.5 C. Now as the NY TIMES has pointed out temperature has risen to 1.8 F. … I find it strange that on one side they use C to downplay the drop and F to increase the rise in the way you think about it. 0.5 C is close to 1 F. So temperature has risen to only 0.4 C since the 19th century.
So, if co2 holds heat and warms the planet, why have temperatures dropped ? Are we only dealing with trends ? Suppose the global temperature drops another 0.5 C, what has happened to all that energy ? The warming is here and then it isn’t, where is it ? If the global temperature drops below all the retained warmth over the last 100+ years, does it matter how long it lasts ?
I say no it doesn’t matter how long it lasts. AGW cannot allow the heat ( or energy, for those that want to engage in nitpicking word usage ) to escape. Is there some physical attribute of co2 that allows for these textbook changes ? Whatever causes the temperature to drop is completely independent of co2, and in the case where it soars from those lows in a short time period is also independent of co2. We are speaking globally here, not locally. … 0.5 C globally is stunning, and in 6 months. It has to register with the AGW crowd that something is wrong with the theory.

The “polar vortex” is the scary sciencey sounding name for “winter”. The climate extremist kooks have managed to dumb down their fellow believers to the point where slapping a new name on normal things that have been around forever can scare the weak minded believers. “Polar vortex” is not new. The cold it delivers is not new. It did not come into existence due to CO2. And it is not behaving differently because of CO2. But “climate change”is causing those afflicted with true believer status to become more and more gullible and less capable of critical thinking. And the NYT enjoys profiting from that, apparently.

If it’s getting warmer: blame CO2. If it’s getting colder: blame CO2. An earthquake in the eastern Pacific region: blame CO2. Coral bleaching in the northern Great Barrier Reef under water temperatures cooler than in the Red Sea (where coral reefs are flourishing, believe it or not): blame CO2.
CO2 levels in the then atmosphere were much greater during the Late Devonian than currently, and coral reefs were flourishing in Alberta and the Kimberley region of Western Australia. There you go- some science facts for you, conveniently unacknowledged by the IPCC. Climates have been changing for the last 4.5 billion years of earth history and there have been glacial epochs during periods when atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have been much higher than today, a fact acknowledged by 97% of geological scientists.

Actually it was “new” to the media scaremongering and incorrectly using it as of 2014. See here: http://abcnews.go.com/US/polar-vortex-misused-weather-term-2014/story?id=26793261

**“Polar vortex” is not new.**
Correct. It originated about 1850.
However, the CAGW crowd and certain others including the media do not follow history when attempting to sensationalize and seem to think it is a recent phenomenon. In 1979 the Arctic Vortex was blamed on the cold. Today it is twisted and blamed on warming to suit the agenda.
As I wrote in another post, my grandfather called it “Winter”.

ALL Ice Ages began around Hudson Bay, not Alaska. During all Ice Ages, Alaska had virtually no glaciers except in the high mountains while gigantic glaciers covered most of Canada and a lot of the Northeast and Russia had virtually no ice sheets while Europe did…the Polar Vortex is exactly what engineers all Ice Age effects.
An Ice Age is when the Polar Vortex goes on and on and on for about 30-50,000 years. Over and over again, too.

The polar vortex is a lunar declinational tidal effect in the atmosphere, due to the changes in the angle of declination. LDA bottomed out in September of 2016, and is slowly climbing back toward the maximum value by 2025, when we will have a yuge number of hurricanes again like 2004/5.
During Ice ages the declinational angle relative to the ecliptic plane drops from ~5 degrees to less than 1 degree, causing the solar and lunar tidal effects to stay at a concurrent maximum effect like we see for short periods in inter-glacial periods like now.
This is all due and under the control of the position of the solar system relative to the spiral arms, their magnetic fields induction into the solar and Earth’s magnetic polar orientation.
when the tilt of the magnetic poles of the sun decrease so they line up closer to the axis of rotation, the parker spirals in the solar wind that drive the lunar declination on the ecliptic plane smooth out the moon is less driven N/S so the global circulation synchronizes to large standing oscillations of the jet streams. Which allows most of the moisture and heat from the continuous Pineapple express patterns to clear the Alaskan snow cover and dump it all along the Eastern US and Canada in a near continuous Nor Easter effect for most of 100,000 years.
Now we are seeing the early effects of a lowering of the Earths magnetic fields at the beginning of the cycle. Get used to the blustery winters.

While hurricanes would probably be increasing in 2025, I think the date for maximum might be 2033 to 2035 . But then there might be other factors as well. You know what would be interesting would be to see if there were hurricanes during the last ice age. Or if there was a sharp decrease.

Yes, that’s why I said “posing as journalists”. As the MSM pensions off older, wiser and more experienced journalists, they are replaced by unpaid interns or barely paid kids right out of colleges (where they have been indoctrinated for four – or more – years) who, from what I’ve seen, basically re-type press releases from Greenpeace.

I do not know how relevant it is to the discussion here , but there is an interesting comment from Philip Mulholland on the JoNova site (talking about recent increase in Greenland ice mass) where he mentions a Russian report on one effect of 60 year cycles in the North Atlantic and writes :
“The weather pattern of the northern hemisphere Atlantic operates in two basic modes, either predominantly zonal (latitudinal) flow or predominantly meridional (longitudinal) flow. These two basic flow modes last on average for about 30 years. During periods of zonal (west-east-west) flow the climate generally warms; then during the following periods of meridional (south-north-south) flow the warmth accumulated over the previous 30 years is directed into the Arctic resulting in increased moisture transport producing more snowfall in Greenland and Scandinavia. So now you know why the IPCC chose to define climate as the average of 30 years of weather – they accounted for only the warming half of the climate cycle. During the coming years expect more south-north-south directed weather movement, more cold arctic plunges in winter and more snow. Weather forecast prediction models tuned to the last 30 years of zonal flow will continue to produce poor forecasts until the computer code is adjusted to take account of the new weather reality.”

Reply to  mikewaite
December 17, 2016 6:03 pm

Great comment. Add to it the simple fact that the “meridonal flow” brings a lot of heat to the Pole, where it is squandered to outer space, and you have our planet enacting its system of self-governance.
I’ve been watching streams of “mild” air head to the Pole since last Christmas, often creating a polar whorl of low pressure I dubbed “Ralph”, partly out of whimsy and partly just to draw attention to how persistent the phenomenon is. Even when the AO is positive (and the Pole region has higher pressure) that low still can be there, like the hole in a doughnut. I see it simplistically, and call it the “whirlpool over the drain”, as warmth leaves our planet.
In terms of any sort of “energy budget” a zonal flow is far more frugal, as it locks the cold up at the Pole and allows milder air to change snow to rain further north, causing the snow-pack to extend less far south, which results in less radiational cooling during the long winter nights and less cooling caused by the high albedo of freshly fallen snow during the short winter days.
Compared to the frugality of a zonal flow, a meridional flow spends like a drunken sailor, both by bringing mild air north to be lost to outer space and by bringing the snow-cover further south.
Rather than discussing this phenomenon I am expecting a lot of MSM hoop-la, as the mild air continues to head north to the Pole. (A big rush is heading north over Svalbard right now.) More than ever I think we will be seeing it made blatantly obvious that what is important to some individuals is not science and truth, but money and power. What is reported is not science, but propaganda, pure and simple.

Reply to  tony mcleod

Not at this time of year. At best it results in “less-thick” sea-ice, (because the ice thickens more slowly), which may be covered with deeper snow because the air brought north is moister than normal.
Sometimes deeper snow creates a sort of insulation which keeps the ice thinner, but the howling winds associated with a meridional pattern tends to crack up the ice, which negates the insulating effect of deeper snow by exposing more water, which promptly flashes-freezes, making extra ice.
Above freezing temperatures do happen, when Atlantic air charges north, and last Christmas I think a buoy not far from the Pole did touch freezing briefly, for a few hours, but it is remarkable how quickly “mild” air up there drops well below freezing. Watch. You’ll see it for yourself.

AGW originally predicted a more zonal atmospheric circulation evolving as a result of man made global warming., now that it is the opposite they have fabricated what this article tries to convey.
I mention the AO, to show how dishonest AGW THEORY IS which said over and over again when it first came out that this index would become more positive over time only for them to reverse themselves and claim AGW theory predicted that the melting of sea ice would cause a meridional atmospheric circulation (-AO) which total BS.
AGW never called for that originally , this is why I bring it up to show AGW theory for what it is which is BS.

Scientists have been puzzling over what causes ice age glacial intervals to start at regular intervals over the last 2-3 million years. Well now the NYT can reveal the answer – its global warming!

Chris
December 16, 2016 7:53 am

Eric’s headline:”NYT Blames Winter Chill on Global Warming”
Here’s what the article actually says about links between the Polar Vortex and Global Warming: “If global warming is supposed to be warming the globe, then why is it so cold?
Well, for starters, there is a difference between weather and climate. Climate refers to the long-term averages and trends in atmospheric conditions over large areas, while weather deals with short-term variations, which is what happens when the polar vortex visits your hometown.
And of course, an Arctic blast can still occur in a warmer world. The air that comes down from the North Pole might not be as cold, Ms. Barthold said, but it would still be the product of the same phenomenon.
Some studies suggest that climate change could actually make these frigid waves of Arctic air more common, a result of shrinking sea ice. However, other scientists remain skeptical of this theory.”
That’s it – completely different than what Eric implied with his headline.

I’ve got it! I’ve figured out how to stop Global Warming.
Since the Earth warms in the daytime when the Sun is shining, and cools off at night after the Sun sets, we can speed up the rotation of the Earth during the Day so that the Earth has less time to warm and slow it down during the night so the Earth has more time to cool.
We can do this by attaching a series of giant rocket engines to both sides of the Andes Mountains. The Andes are perfect for this because they run virtually North and South like a humongous fin on the globe – a perfect “pushing point”. During the Day we ignite the rockets on the East side of the Andes up so that it speeds the Earth’s rotation up. At Night, we ignite the rockets on the West side so it slows the Earth’s rotation down.
There you go, problem solved!

You both seem to underestimate the most powerful lever(s) needed for your project of combating and fighting Global Warming,
A champion or the Champion.
If you allow me, I will nominate the Nobel Prize champion Al Gore, and also as your projects have to do with lots of rocketing staff I also take the liberty, if you allow it through your kindness, to nominate also Elon.
One off them should be fully running the SH project and the other the NH one.
For this help, if you so kindly consider it the only thing I ask is that I have the vote who of these two ends up to what project…..
Taking the liberty,,,,,,, as I happen to live in the NH I vote Gore for the SH project…..please allow me that much… no any other favors I will ask 🙂
Can do with out the chilling effect in the NH:)

OK, I could have been more clear. What I was saying was that newspapers have been struggling for more than 5 years. How is that reminding us of that newsworthy? I can look around and find 50 stories about newspapers struggling – so what?
Here is one from last month about the conservative WSJ laying off employees and cutting sections. Should I conclude from that, that by being conservative, the WSJ is the cause of its problems? Of course not, that would be idiotic and inaccurate. It’s a problem affecting all newspapers, it has nothing to do with conservative or liberal angles. http://fortune.com/2016/11/02/wall-street-journal-layoffs-cuts-sections/

In pagan times (Aztecs for instance) to keep things on track ( eg sunrise, rainy season) the chiefs would make some fairly low cost sacrifices which in the main seemed to work; bringing up the sun regularly and the rainy season quite often. I believe the sacrifices had to be made by prominent families donating a few offspring to the religious occasion – a great honour. Unfortunately today we resort to the application of bogus climate science concerning hockey stick studies which if anything make things worse, is depressing and very expensive.
Perhaps we could revisit the old tried and tested pagan methods again and sacrifice a few prominent climate scientists.

They even made sport of it, holding ball games on the solstice dates that ended with the winner literally losing his head. “In Northern Hemisphere wintertime, there is a weakening of the stratospheric westerly jet by up to ∼3–4 m s−1, with the largest changes occurring in January–February. This is accompanied by a deepening of the Aleutian Low at the surface and an increase in blocking over Northern Europe and the North Pacific. There is also an equatorward shift in the Southern Hemisphere midlatitude eddy‐driven jet in austral spring. The occurrence of an amplified regional response during winter and spring suggests a contribution from a top‐down pathway for solar‐climate coupling; this is tested using an experiment in which ultraviolet (200–320 nm) radiation is decreased in isolation of other changes. The results show that a large decline in solar activity over the 21st century could have important impacts on the stratosphere and regional surface climate.”

Shhh…the dirty secret that you don’t see in the headlines about the inevitable “this is the X hottest year in Y years” is that:
1) they aren’t actually comparing temperature readings but the difference from a year’s average temperature (which is problematic to begin with) from a 30 year average; and,
2) that 30 year average includes the chilly 60s and 70s.
(I know most WUWT readers know this, but is amazing how often I have to point this out to Chicken Littles).

I recall two winters in particular. Record low for the State of Washington was set in December 1968, when Oregon didn’t quite set a record. But the same day it did hit 35 below zero F where I lived then. Then there was 1977, the year the PDO flipped.
But it’s worse than we thought!
The corrupt gatekeepers of NASA, NOAA and HadCRU have warmed up the post-WWII Big Chill of the ’40s to ’70s and cooled the ’80s, ’90s and early ’00s to make the past decade look warmer. And of course likewise cooled the 1920s to ’40s, which were actually warmer than this century so far.
But the public is hip to their tricks.

Well lets give them a new term ..subtropical ridge, cause that is going to be denying winter in the east later this month into Jan. However our analog winters all had a month that was warmer in them. And what is scary about all this is one of the similar scenarios is 84-85 The ridge got so strong in the east around Christmas, a piece of the northern branch dropped down the east side of it and begat Lili which tried to hit Hispaniola from the NE Christmas day. Within a month the Super Bowl Sunday outbreak of 85 with record cold hit, forcing the Inauguration of Ronald Reagan indoors. My point is that the fake weather news press is as complicit in this as in all the all the other stuff we are seeing. Its why WUWT, not the NYT is the place to look. BTW, The bathtub slosh idea worked like a charm and we used it at Weatherbell to forecast a very cold December from back in October and November. I did videos on it, discussions on it, our clients were well aware and ready . Tweeted on it before the fact a bunch of times First heard about it in 1962! My dad took me up to the weather station at Texas A and M a week before Christmas and one of the guys up there ( Dad was the oldest freshman on A and M campus, going on a VA) mentioned he thought it would get real cold cause Asia was so cold in OCt and November, its like a bathtub sloshing. I was in the teletype room pretending I was typing obs and remember it well. Why? That was the year me, my brother and Dad all had the mumps for Christmas. I got better first and 3 days after that Christmas was outside in front of our apartment trying to push some sleet that had fallen into piles in a desperate attempt to recreate what I left behind in Rhode Island ( our last winter there was 60-61) Years later when I researched it, sure enough it was there. Its a very interesting theory, one I wont bore you with here, but the whole result is that cold seeks warm. The arctic is warm true, the cold instead seeks the true warm, on the other side of the pole over the center of the NAMER continent and it was very sneaky It does not come over the top, it comes from the west into Alaska and then down into the west so you get some big central and western US outbreaks., you are seeing the result of the fight that went on the bundling of the cold and the powerful jet, so it pulls up after a while BUT THIS SHOULD NOT LAST. Instead once we break into smaller wavelengths we should see blocking develop and the cold overwhelm the pattern mid and late Jan again, and then be very stubborn centered further east into spring. There is a lot of what I called bare knuckled research in the private sector, We develop ideas that we do not have time to peer review ( nor do we get the grant money to just research) and instead real time battle test them for all to see. And the sting of criticism and being wrong and being forced to find out why leads to the advancment. I try to tell my academia friends, you guys the Queensberry rules, out in the blogs and what we do is more like Charles Bronson Hard Times fighting. ( Great movie btw) Joe D Aleos Pioneer model has been forecasting a cold winter since summer.

Looking at the NullSchool graphic below, it looks like the circular movement around the North Pole has modified itself into an out-of-round shape with one end of it stretched down into Canada and North America. So it looks like the sloshing you mention. Cold air sloshing out of its circular pattern.
The whole circulation pattern is a little off-center to the North Pole. It will be interesting to watch how it moves in the future. Love that nullschool view! 🙂

Thanks God for the Internet. If everyone still got their hard “truth” only from Walter Cronkite or Dan Rather, or the New York Times, or the Associated Press, or NPR, it’d be time to start picking out your cave dwelling of choice. We are slowly turning the tide, I can feel it. Yesterday I posted the AP story about the US Fish and Wildlife Service approving killing up to 4200 eagles with windmills “to save the planet” on a state-wide birdwatcher forum, and was surprised how many skeptics came out of the shadows to cast aspersions of “green energy” and praise fossil fuels. Of course, the forum moderator had to lock the thread, to stop [ahem] “off topic” discussion, but I was pleasantly surprised and encouraged. Of course, I still don’t dare mention I engage in upland bird hunting, since the demise of even a single bird (even a tasty Chukar Partridge – introduced species, by the way) is a tragedy to many of those folks, bless ’em.

What we are experiencing is AGWC – Anthropogenic Global Winter Cooling. AGWC is the result of human efforts to cool the summers, but with the Southern and Northern hemispheres reversed in the climate models. This results in a 6-month lag in the effect on climate of AGW campaigners’ attempts to turn down The Great Climate Thermostat In The Sky. Thus the attempts to cool overheated summers result in the cooling of winters instead, and attempts to moderate cold winters cause summers to be hotter.
Officials at the Climate Computing Department at Topsy Turvey University near Cambridge, UK, confirmed that they are working on a revision of their computer models of climate, to correct this “slightly misprogrammed algorythm”, promising that, in future, we would see warmer winters, cooler summers, and falling sea levels. Meanwhile, Officials in the Climate Records Department of Topsy Turvey University have announced via Twitter that, once the temperature records for the winter of 2016-2017 are “Seasonally Adjusted”, all apparently anomalous figures for temperatures and snowfall will disappear into “Normality”. “Normality” is defined by them as “within 2 standard deviations of whatever figure we decide to publish in support of the figures predicted by our computer models”. /
Officials explained that the error in the original algorythm arose from employing Australian computer programmers in London to code the Topsy Turvey climate models. Australians, the university has now discovered, view the World upside down, and the seasons 6 months out of phase.

This media source is just typical of the spin in global warming over the decades.
The tropospheric-stratospheric polar vortex breakdown of January 1977
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/GL004i004p00151/full
“An extraordinary warming of the stratosphere in December-January 1976-77 was followed by tropospheric warming in the polar region and cooling in middle latitudes. During January 10-20, the associated polar anticyclone extended from the surface to 10 mb.”
This is why the recent years surface adjustments are nonsense and ignore warming in the Arctic during colder periods in the northern hemisphere especially. Colder winters in the past for most people living in mid-latitude regions were caused by warming in the polar regions. Ignoring the warming back then in data sets and adding the warming even more now when this occurs, just adds false comparison of extra warming now because it wasn’t applied back then. Confirmation bias at it’s best by very selective data cherry picking.
The polar vortex has been known for decades and we can literally blame no sun light reaching the Arctic.
“Feeling a Chill? Blame the Polar Vortex. And Global Warming.”
So does global warming cause no sun light reaching the Arctic? NO
Therefore it has nothing to do with global warming or global cooling or no change or climate change or Summer. It is just weather caused by a displacement of very cold Arctic air because there is no sun light from the source.
A warmer planet doesn’t cause cold waves (no sun light), like a cooler planet doesn’t cause heat waves (sun light). The changes in global temperatures are so small that it makes no difference to the behaviour of the planet whether warming, cooling or remaining the same when the mechanisms rely on either sunlight or no sunlight present at all.
