BBC Resurrecting the Dead to Make Up Climate News

Tom Barr writes: The BBC is up to its old tricks, using any old snap to support its warmist position.

Apparently desperate to support the Marrakech Alarmist Junket still reeling from the election of Trump; in its “news” (using the term loosely) piece “2016 ‘very likely’ to be world’s warmest year” it originally illustrated its assertion “2016 has seen high temperatures lead to devastating droughts in many parts” with a photograph of numerous dead cattle:

The trouble is that this picture is Getty Images # 57127741 which was, in reality, was taken over a decade ago on March 16, 2006.

Perhaps somebody at the BBC has done something for their £4bn a year and pointed out that misleading the public like this, and not giving a fig for the facts, is lazy journalism and is bound to get spotted, for free: The picture and its caption have now magically changed to a Massai lady with a water drum balanced on her head along with the incisive claim “High temperatures can lead to devastating droughts”. Genius reporting.

It used to be Griff, it used to be. It’s now nothing more than a rabid leftist propaganda mouthpiece and about as reliable a source of news as the Guardian or Independent. I have recently noticed signs that things might be slowly changing at the BBC though which shouldn’t really be all that surprising since their brand was something highly valuable and once it becomes generally known that it’s as biased as any tabloid rag the golden goose is dead in the water.

Griff – I remember Gavin Scmidt on Radio 4’s P.M. programme proclaiming 2014 the warmest year ever. Eddie Mair was clearly aware that David Rose had already pointed out that there was only a 38% chance that this was true and asked “How confident are you of that?”. Gavin Schmidt hesitated and then replied “We’re pretty confident”. Eddie Mair laughed and said “Ok then” but declined to point out the disingenuous nature of Schmidt’s statement. I’ve been paying for the BBC my whole adult life but, over the last ten years, have come to realise that it’s an institutionally green/liberal organisation and can’t be trusted to be impartial on many issues.
What’s the probability that 2015 was the warmest year ever? 2016? Does a 38% probability simply mean that the signal is swamped by the uncertainty because there has been next to bugger-all warming this millenium? How’s La Nina looking?

Mr Green Genes, I thought Griff was being sardonic! Maybe he really does believe that BS he has written. The BBC is a joke, a terrible, terrible joke. I’m 57, English. When I was a boy, we looked to the BBC for independent comment and news. When I got older, I loved their correspondent’s reports from around the world. Then I started to see bias creeping in (probably around 2000-2005). There was some anti-Jewish stuff, some pro-Palestine stuff. And of course, all the climate change nonsense. Now, I NEVER look at the BBC news. The anti-Brexit reporting was the last straw. For an experiment, to show my wife, I went to their search box a few weeks ago and typed in ‘Brexit’. We worked out that 80% of it was anti-brexit (like moaning about Nissan’s warning), and 20% was neutral. NONE of it was pro-Brexit (like pointing out anything to Britain’s benefit). The BBC is truly awful, and it’s an awful shame. It used to be wonderful.

The BBC is run by people who are far from impartial. They no longer simply report the news and increasingly set there own strongly left wing agenda. Listening to the stuff they turn out on their monopolistic news radio coverage is like reading the f…..g Guardian which they always quote on ‘what the papers say’. They increasingly see themselves as the official opposition to the Conservative government in view of the largely anonymous Labour party leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.

Thanks, Neverready, that explains everything. Nobody reads the Guardian – yes, I know I could stop right here but – to learn anything as it is a knowledge free zone. It would be bankrupt if the BBC didn’t buy 97% of the copies to distribute to the news teams. Nothing makes the broadcasts without Guardian approval. When Cherie the Blair Witch got into trouble using a con man to buy flats there were only two ‘news’ outlets that didn’t think this was news. Guess which two? It was all over everywhere else.

Based upon this chart, it would require strong cooling for the next two months to avoid 2016 being a new record-warm year (since the satellite record began in 1979) in the UAH dataset.” Roy Spencer
El Niño years tend to have warmer temps. Nothing new here. Nor is it related to CO2 or anything else humans do. See No Tricks Zone on the 14th., and on the 10th about cooling.

What is the snow-capped mountain? Is it Kilimanjaro? It used to be claimed that the glacier and the snowfields on Kilimanjaro are declining because of global warming. I think it is now generally agreed that the decline is indeed at least partly caused by man made climate change – but the change in question is local, not global. Precipitation on Kilimanjaro has declined because many of the trees that formerly covered the low land around the mountain have been cut down, creating a more arid local climate.

I watched the BBC News reports this afternoon with the 2 “experts” – one from that illustrious seat of scientific eminence and integrity: the UEA Clime Change Ministry of Truth!
She babbled on about the highest average temperature since records began, somewhere in the 1850’s. That was enough to make me fall over in laughing. In the 1850’s, and up to well into the mid/late 20th Century, all around the world, there were nothing like the present number of temperature recordings, the distribution of actual weather stations was very concentrated, largely in western Europe, there was no standard method of measurement or instrument location/enclosure, no agreed weighting adjustment factors for location, land/sea/altitude etc etc were available, heat island “adjustments” were not even thought about, and the accuracy and reliability of measurements taken had no universal standards. All this makes any forecast or trending of annual temperature increases of the 0.15 degree centrigrade per decade target set for a 2 degree temperature rise by 2100 totally fraudulent and massively discredited. It also fully identifies that the $trillions of consumers’ and taxpayers’ money already spent, allocated or planned a grotesque waste of unaffordable money for the whole world. Even then these green zeolots of the true religion and faiths still need to provide even a scientific basis and evidence of a CO2 rise/temperature rise correlation, let alone a causal link, or splitting and separating out the effects of natural and man-made CO2 emissions, or scientifically and consistently allowing for other man-made inputs which have generated CO2 increases such as de-forestration and massive waste heat from the massive increase in power and energy production other than fossil fuels including waste heat from all electrical appliances, and even the temperature increases from the 1950’s onwards generated by the western reductions in solar gloom due to the Clean Air Acts and Anti-Acid Rain massively reducing particulate carbon and sulphates and other aerosol gases – etc. etc. etc.
We all must feel like poor Galileo before the Inquisition: knowing full well that scientific observations and evidence fully identifies that, contrary to scripture, the Earth orbits the Sun and not vice versa, and yet the powers that be simply sit back and repudiate any such proof and depend simply on some long established conformity, ideology and Act of Faith!

The other interesting thing about the BBC article and the WMO “news” is why the WMO pick the years 1961 to 1990 as their baseline comparator as in “The whole of 2015, which broke the previous record by a significant amount, was 0.77 above the 1961-90 average”. Could it have something to do with the fact the period from the 1940’s to the mid 1970’s was of course a cold period (as the German 6th army found out to their cost) which led the proliferation of books and articles in the 1970’s about the impending ice age: see for example http://www.populartechnology.net/2013/02/the-1970s-global-cooling-alarmism.html. To those that deny that happened I can tell you I studied meterology in an evening class in 1980 and we were all told to read Nigel Calder’s The Weather Machine and the Threat of Ice: see https://www.amazon.co.uk/Weather-Machine-Threat-Ice/dp/0563126469/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1479143937&sr=8-1&keywords=weather+machine+calder
Of course if the WMO/Al Gore were right about the general direction of global warming (and its cause), their cause would have been better evidenced by picking say 1910 to 1940 as their baseline comparator.

The BBC broadcast on the news this morning that the growth in CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has all but plateaued. That is eerie less than a week after the US election. I just have this horrid suspicion (I have no evidence) that selective reporting of CO2 concentration may be a way of putting climate change into cold storage until the next US election (or the one after that, or the one after the one after that…). I’ve just made a complaint to the BBC regarding one of their ‘hottest years eva’ stories where the nice lady from the University of East Anglia had taken time away from her poolside bar in Marrakesh to inform us all of how greater levels of CO2 were causing the hottest year since records began and El Nino had nothing really to do with it. The BBC then showed pictures of a smog blighted far eastern city (in China I guess?) and people wearing face masks to protect from from…… the CO2? My complaint focused on their misrepresentation of the issue by their images but also of their bias of having no-one to challenge the view. The woman from UEA even had the cheek to claim that President elect Trump would probably see the sense of many of the business opportunities presented by the renewable energy industry without mentioning that he has made it clear he sees the whole AGW issue as total c**p.

Nothing makes me more mad than the claims that going Green are a good economic opportunity. There is nothing more wrong than that claim, usually “backed up” by figures for jobs. It is simply turning economics upside down. Jobs are a cost, not a benefit.

On the plus side, Trump will take a tax deduction of his non-salary as a business expense and use federal fund to put a huge eliminated “Trump” sign on top of the White House. He will use the taxpayer funds to upgrade the White House as a rolling tax deduction for two generations of Trumps.
Just because Trump is better than Hillary, do not mistake that to mean that he is above reproach.

Lorcanbonda – if you had ever paid taxes you would know you don’t get a deduction for income you don’t receive. There is simply no income to be taxed. And no one can take deductions for taxpayer funded upgrades for anything.

Their reaction to the news of Mr Trump’s election has been extremely entertaining. Radio 4 is for the bien pensant Guardian reading classes, ‘Round Britain Quiz’ is a niche programme even for Radio 4 with teams of regional eggheads (Midlands v Northern Ireland today).

Yes, but the important point was the headlines in today’s BBC news…
2016 will without doubt be the warmest year ever, warmer than 2015, El Nino only made a minor contribution to that and 16 of the warmest years have been this century.
A straight and accurate and factual report, backed by quotes from leading scientists about the need for climate action.

2016 will without doubt be the warmest year ever
================================
And food production has never been higher. Human lifespans have never been higher. The percentage of people dying from famine and disease has never been lower.
So tell us again why humans should fear warming? Why should human beings, an animal that cannot survive temperatures below 27C without technology, why should we fear warming of the earth, when the average temperature of the earth is 15C?
Why should humans, one of the best adapted animals on the planet to deal with heat, an animal that has almost no natural defense against cold, why should humans fear warming of a planet that is on average much too cold for human survival?
If we are talking about the warmest year ever, how about the temperature back at the dawn of our oral history, the book of Genesis. The only place on earth that Adam and Eve could have survived naked is the tropical jungles. Because while the Polar regions warm and cool with the climate, the tropical jungles have been the same temperature for millions of years.

Griff… Learn to read. The headline says ‘likely’. That is not ‘without a doubt’.
The ‘data’ they claim to use is the fully-adjusted NOAA/NASA/CRU, which is a consolidation of interpolations and extrapolations into an estimate, and does not contain error bars. These are the ‘data’. For which the past has been ‘cooled’ and the later years ‘warmed’.
And, playing fast and loose so-far, say that this is the warmest in the recent millennia, fully ignoring the Medieval, Roman, Mycenaen warm periods, and the Holoscene climate optimum.
So, not to factual… Their report or your summary.

The results presented cannot have a statistical probability because for one year you cannot in any way accurately account for all the factors in something like a temperature. This is not a large sample and a correlation but a single figure. What’s the probability something is 10? That’s the sort of question you are claiming has a probability.

Climategate (organized effort to stop the publishing of scientific papers that disprove CAGW), Mann’s hockey stick paper (what appears to be deliberate manipulation of data/analysis to create a hockey stick), and the manipulation of GISS temperature data are some of the many examples that support the assertion that for liberals facts, logic, and integrity of process no longer matter.

The graph below shows the NOAA/NASA hottest ten years of the 21st century plus 1998, and of course they show 1998 as being average in temperature. They do this so they can claim years after 1998 are the “hottest ever”. But if you check out the UAH temperature chart below, you will see that it shows that 1998 was hotter than all subsequent years, by quite a bit, except for the last year 2016 when the temperature exceeded the highpoint of 1998, in Feb. 2016, with a temperature one-tenth of a degree hotter than 1998.
The NOAA/NASA graph and the UAH chart are telling different stories. Who are you going to believe? UAH, with no political agenda? Or, NOAA?NASA with a huge political agenda?

As if the ‘simpletons’ they are aiming at will know that. Here is another anal-shattering enema for science. According to this new study in Science Magazine, climate change is catastrophic because (gasp!) nearly every single biome (82%) is adapting to it. I kid you not — adaptation is bad — and, like a strong man twisting your arm behind your back, climate change is forcing to happen. Apparently, nothing else could have caused this tragedy to occur.
http://science.sciencemag.org/content/354/6313/aaf7671
“Most ecological processes now show responses to anthropogenic climate change. In terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems, species are changing genetically, physiologically, morphologically, and phenologically and are shifting their distributions, which affects food webs and results in new interactions.”
(Oh, the horrors!)

Adapting to what? Human-caused climate change? How can you tell they are adapting, when what they are supposedly adapting to, has so little influence on the climate that it cannot be measured? You can’t measure the cause, but you can measure the adaption to this cause? You don’t even know if there is a cause, yet you claim it is being adapted to?
The fundamental problem is the climate alarmists cannot prove their basic theory: That humans are causing the climate to do things it would not normally do because of human activity. There is no proof of this theory. There are a lot of indications this theory is not true. And yet these guys see adaptions to the theory in nature.
Human beings certainly have the ability to see what they want to see, and I think this is what we have here, based on no evidence that there is human-caused climate change.

It’s like many “climate change” studies. Not the ones based on thermodynamics, but the ones based on “cause and effect”. They start with the conclusion and then rework the problem statement until the conclusion is confirmed.
Adaptation is a good thing. We adapted to the elements by building homes. So did beavers — before humans were a figment of their imaginations.

Exactly. About 95 percent of what passes for climate science today starts with the conclusion, the unproven conclusion, that the Earth’s climate is behaving abnormally, and human activity is the cause.

For me, the presumption is even more careless. All warming is man-made and anything man-made is bad. They can literally study that carbon emissions cause malaria because there is still malaria in the tropics. Yet, malaria is down considerably over the past 100 years, particularly in the developed nations, because of access to medicines and insecticides spread by trucks and planes.
In other words, there is a total disconnect between cause & effect.
I read one study that concluded that deaths due to heat will rise in New York City by hundreds over the next century. One of the assumptions in the study is that air conditioning saved lives, but 87% of residents already have air conditioning so that figure is effectively maxed out for the city. I asked — couldn’t they just turn up their air conditioning (and doesn’t that mean we should ship air conditioners to the tropics?) “But, that would increase carbon emissions!”

Help needed here folks.
I understand the Marrakesh express has 25,000 people attending (did I get that right?).
It’s a two-week conference?
So even in modest terms, the whole shooting match, per person, with flights, food, hotel bills (decent hotels one would assume, not some sleazy flea pit.) should cost around £5,000 each.
So 2,500 x £5,000 = £12, 500,000………….Nahhhhh!!!! I’ll check my calculator again.
£5,000 x 2,500 = £12,500,000
FFS!………Whose paying for all this? And WTF happened to the new fangled video conferencing we were all promised 20 years ago?
I must have read it wrong, sorry folks. No one in their right minds would ship in 2,500 delegates for a meeting on climate change. They don’t have a big enough conference centre, other than a football stadium.
Let me guess. Conferences were restricted to 1 hour a day (let me see…..counts digits) 2,500/8 hours is around 350 people, for each conference. That’s doable. Meanwhile, the rest are in the pool/on the beach/shopping (expense accounts)/or in the pub.

The BBC was taken over as an accountable arm of the British government following the David Kelly scandal. It was the excuse the government had been seeking for years to draw their teeth, and it worked.
Sadly it was nothing more than a cost-cutting exercise to save money the government has since poured into bogus, biased, AGW research. The BBC has now been instructed to toe the party line and report to Stasi HQ where they will receive their daily propaganda briefings.
One of the questions being asked of the Trump administration is where do press standards stand? We ought to be asking the UK government the same question.
I think we would all like the BBC back that was happy to investigate and criticise our government for their despicable tactics. Instead, they have been beaten into submission with the Savile stick.
I’m sure there are a number of ‘Savile’ politicians, inconveniently still alive, who deserve scrutiny. We of course note, that the politicians ‘guilty’ of unutterable crimes are now dead. Indeed, much like Savile, they are unable to mount a defence. The mistake was made to target Cliff Richard, only a mistake because they forgot he was still alive.
The collusion amongst the BBC and the government is palpable and disgusting.

I am sorry but weather goes in cycles always does especially in Australia. We had droughts in the 19th Century and the early 20th century. But the trajectory is not a straight line up in temperature. Far from it. At present I am more concerned about prolonged cold.

Griff is in the UK, apparently. He worries about sea level rise. I would say go visit Portsmouth, Gosport, Exeter even Emsworth places that have been there at sea level, to see how much the sea is higher now than it was ~300 years ago. I will wager it won’t be, significantly, measurable on any tide gauge.

Griff is more likely on another planet !!
He certainly has no idea what is going on, on this one !!

I do like Emsworth…
If I remember rightly it was settled after changes in sea level in the early Medieval period.
I wouldn’t buy a house there now though (even could I afford it)

The south and south east of England is sinking (One reason for the London tide barrier) and has been since the ice age. If your claim that sea levels are rising is true then places I mention would be inundated by sea. They are not and there is no noticeable change in any tide gauge in the places I mention. The point I was making which you ignored. Well done Griff showing your lack of knowledge again.

TH shows that the COOLING in the 8 months since the peak of the El Nino has been the FASTEST and DEEPEST 8 moth period of cooling in the whole satellite record..
And almost certainly further to go. (I’m used my graphing to match the style for RSS and UAH)comment imagecomment image

We should also remember where MOST of the warm anomaly was for the first part of the year.
In a big COLD blob (just not as cold as usual) over northern Europe in the MIDDLE OF WINTER !!
It has not been a “warm” year… it has been a “less cold” year, mainly in one specific region of the planet.
Nothing “Global” about it, at all.

It is currently 10-20 deg C below normal over northern Eurasia from Kamchatka to the Black Sea. A huge area of incredible cold with temps as low as -41 deg C…..in mid November. The arctic is warm because of the anomalously weak polar vortex and -ve AO pattern. The cold is just displaced and one could argue how it is that such extreme cold caused by radiative cooling could occur in an enhanced GHG environment?

Remember, Griffie: Those that live by polar amplification of warming, die by polar amplification of cooling. The next few years will tell us; guessing the future is just that.

Is it true? Or did you hear it on the BBC?

BBC has one hell of a quality problem…very poor unless they are swinging a Hi Def camera around wildlife somewhere. Thats the quality of the camera rather than the fleshware related to its output. The BBC needs a piece of this:

Media have long been inferring connections between ‘hottest year ever’ and provocative images like a field of dead cows or a dried-up river bed. Subliminal messaging. Works well, too, which is why they use it.

The BBC is run by a load of arts graduates who are proud of the fact that they know nothing about science and even less about maths. The BBC long ago got rid of impartial independently minded scientists who exhibited a sceptical view on global warming. Many popular science presenters who questioned the veracity of agw dogma were fired. So there is no-one in the organisation to counter the steady flow of warmist propaganda and an absolute zero probability of anyone there prepared to say that it is a complete crock of shit.

I don’t think any such were fired. Can you name any?

David Bellamy for one – his BBC career hit an abrupt stop when he called agw as BS. After that everyone knew to keep schtum while every new presenter (eg Prof Brian Cox) are sold hook line and sinker on agw.

David Bellamy for one – his BBC career hit an abrupt stop when he called agw as BS. John Ball for another – he ran an inspired show for younger viewers and was fired for agw heresy. After that everyone knew to keep schtum while every new presenter (eg Prof Brian Cox) are sold hook line and sinker on agw.

The British Bullshit Corporation (BBC) also put out a Radio 4 interview with a certain Trenberth on Monday; all in aid of “hottest year evah” nonsense.
At the time of listening it would have been impolite to VOMIT.
