Guest essay by Eric Worrall

h/t DailyCaller – an article by Joe Romm on Think Progress (formerly Climate Progress) claims global warming triggered the “political tipping point” which led to Brexit and the rise of Trump.

Recent events, especially Trumpism and Brexit, are omens of the disunity we face. Trump’s campaign is driven by racist statements and wildly impractical plans to wall off the country literally and figuratively from various ethnic and religious groups.

The Syrian migrant crisis “had an outsized impact on the Brexit,” as NBC News political director Chuck Todd said Friday. You can see that in the pro-Brexit poster from the U.K. Independence Party (above) — which became a major advertising campaign of the referendum — featuring thousands of male refugees streaming from Croatia into Slovenia last October.

It bears repeating that a major 2015 study confirmed: “Human-caused climate change was a major trigger of Syria’s brutal civil war.” This study found that global warming made Syria’s 2006 to 2010 drought two to three times more likely. “While we’re not saying the drought caused the war,” the lead author explained. “We are saying that it certainly contributed to other factors — agricultural collapse and mass migration among them — that caused the uprising.”

And that mass migration ultimately fueled the mass refugee crisis of the last two years, a crisis the world has utterly failed to figure out how to handle.

Read more: http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2016/06/27/3792313/brexit-trump-climate-inaction/

There are a few problems with this narrative.

For starters, the evidence that the Syrian Civil War has anything to do with climate is tenuous at best. Even the über green Guardian has criticised attempts to link the Syrian Civil War to Climate.

The refugee “crisis” is an almost entirely engineered problem. The countries which have the worst “refugee” problems are countries whose leaders deliberately laid out the welcome mat. In Europe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel virtually guaranteed undocumented immigrants who made it to Europe would receive residency. In America, President Obama granted mass amnesty to undocumented immigrants, encouraging unprecedented numbers of poor people to entrust their families to international criminals.

Contrast those disruptive refugee experiences to Australia, which broke the credibility of people smugglers by turning back the boats, and successfully slowed the flow of mostly economic undocumented migrants to a trickle.

The world is a complex place. Trying to explain the decline of liberal politics, in terms of how much CO2 is in the air, is simply nuts.

In Canada, we have a lot of immigration. What we don’t have is illegal immigration. This is how it should be. If Obama wanted more Mexican immigrants, he should have used the proper constitutional rout to get the law/policies changed, allowing more legal immigrants.

Logic is highly overrated. If your starting premises are wrong, all the logic in the world won’t help (ie. GIGO). Their problem, as is the problem of doctrinaire right wingers, is relying on their dogma and being unconnected with reality.

The left isn’t concerned about logic. They are about power and control and the use of force to achieve that control.
You aren’t interested in following their plan? They will force you to comply.

It’s actually a matter of definition:

Doctrinaire: one who attempts to put into effect an abstract doctrine or theory with little or no regard for practical difficulties.

If you want right-wing examples, I give you Jean-Marie Le Pen and his daughter Marine. Israel is also a rich source of the doctrinaire right wing.

Jeff in Galgary, Yes we have illegal immigration in Canada hundreds of “political” refugees, we have had “boat people”, and there are illegal crossings all along the border with the USA. What we do have is a media blackout of the reality.

Depending on how my retirement works out, I always thought that maybe some terrible, cold Canadian prairie winter I would show up off the coast of Jamaica and claim asylum. I’m sure they would put me up in a nice hotel and give me some sort of financial support. You don’t suppose they would find me a job, do you? Might kinda ruin it.

Well, he is right, in a way. ‘Climate Change’ and Global Warming’ has had a major influence on the opinions of a lot of Brits. Just not quite in the way Romm claims. And it sure has driven people to the anti-EU camp.
And as long as Climate Faithful like Romm keep spewing nonsense like this it’s going to keep on driving people away from them.

He IS sort of right, with one (I’ll use “typical British understatement”) GIGANTIC difference – the “Climate Change/AGW AGENDA has resulted in the Brexit and rise of Trump. Unreasonable non-solutions to non-existent problems, particularly those which come at great cost in terms of freedom, economics, and sovereignty, do tend to get the voters peed off.

Bashar al-Assad became a Syrian leader because his father was a leader. Same in North Korea. Maybe a climate change led a Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Hussein Obama to declare red lines and later abandon them. Mr. Romm calls this Think? Or Progress?

AllyKat

I am sure climate change is what caused al-Assad to suddenly start treating his fellow Syrians badly, everything was totally cool up until that drought.
Nope, cannot even type it without gagging on the lies. Not only did my parents teach me to avoid lying, it actually stuck. I am thus ineligible to work at “Think” “Progress”. Thank heavens.
It really bothers me when people downplay evil choices and actions by claiming that Person X would never have done Bad Thing Y if some outside influence had not caused Problem Z. (Note: Problem Z usually is neither a problem nor existent.) People choose to do horrible things and those choices are their responsibility. This modern version of “the devil made me do it” is sickening, especially when those same evil acts are then blamed on a person/group/idea/event that hardly ever has anything to do with Person X/Bad Thing Y/Problem Z.
Considering that even AID workers were admitting that close to half or more of the “refugees” were economic migrants from other countries using the Syrian debacle as cover, and around 70% of the “refugees” were single men of fighting age, I am skeptical about a lot of these crisis claims. I feel sympathy for the Syrians as many of them are completely innocent victims of al-Assad and Daesh. However, I do not think that means that everyone who claims to be Syrian should get a question-free permanent residency offer to European countries, America, Canada, Australia, etc. Every single person should be going through a background check before they leave a refugee camp in Turkey. No check? Go back and get in line. If I were running things, Christians and those belonging to minority religions (Yazudis, etc.) would all get first dibs. Once they were all settled, move everyone out of Iraq/Afghanistan who aided the US and its allies during the war (and their families) since many/all of them are in danger. If there are still “slots”, start taking in the Muslim women and children. After the people who are most in danger are resettled, if there is any space left, start considering the Muslim men. Part of triage is figuring out who is most in danger and needs the most immediate help, and then moving those individuals to the front of the line.
If the above guidelines were actually being followed, I bet most people would feel a lot more comfortable about letting in refugees. Regardless, a sensible person is going to recognize that any refugee who is “resettled” in a country is never going to leave. Even if the conflicts were to end tomorrow, there will not be much left for anyone who chooses to return. Few people are going to uproot themselves again to go back to a hellhole, even if it is their homeland. This means that the receiving country should expect to provide aid to each refugee for a very long time, possibly their entire life. The country should realize that each refugee is another person looking for employment, and every child the refugee has (before and after arrival) will require services and eventually become another person in the employment line. If your country already has difficulty supporting the current population and already has significant unemployment, adding to the burden is not going to go down well with even the most compassionate people. It is not selfish or racist or whatever to ask why a foreign country’s problems should result in another country’s citizens getting less aid/services and more competition for jobs.

As we in Blighty are suffering yet another wash-out summer (watch Wimbledon – or not…- if you don’t believe me), it is hardly likely that global warming caused anything in these parts. Chance would be a fine thing!
The moaning about Brexit among Britain’s, the EU’s and even the world’s left liberal “elite” continues unabated. They are all desperately looking for reasons why those stupid British people didn’t vote as they were so clearly instructed. John Kerry has now stated he doesn’t think we will really leave (the Euro-Communist Superstate) anyway.
They cannot fathom how we can’t think as they do and many (even publicly) are stating that we morons shouldn’t have even been given the chance to vote in the first place as we didn’t understand what was good for us. Try telling that to the desperate 50% unemployed under-25s in places like Spain and Italy, leave alone Greece etc.
The lunatics have truly taken over the asylum. At least in Britain, 52% fought back.

I think it is funny that for all the navel gazing leftists enjoy doing, none of them seem to have realized that they themselves may have caused the low turnout of “remain” voters. If people believe that an outcome is certain or almost certain, they often will not bother taking action to ensure the outcome. Theoretically, some potential voters (on both sides) may have stayed home because they did not think their vote would make a difference. This is one reason why actual election results do not always match the polls. Another is that some polls survey the “population” and others survey “likely voters”. Guess which polls tend to more closely match reality.
I suspect that more Brits (voting or not) wanted out than wanted to stay, but it warms my cold little heart to think that the media’s demagoguery might have backfired on them.

Romm is typical of the stereotypes in the elitist dictatorship group that want to tell the people to do what they say, not what they do. The remain campaign has been mainly this elite dictatorship that has also been highly involved in alarmist global warming. The similarities are remarkable and the scaremongering and lies are equal in measure. They hate democracy and when they don’t get their own way believe like spoilt brats.

Just confirms what we already know with the elitist dictatorship involved in alarmist global warming and will play the race-card or do anything in their power to support their agenda based on controlling the people.
Where the people saw similar behaviour with the remain campaign and alarmist global warming came from the high profile scaremongering from both groups. When they recognize similar behaviour and instantly read the signs of exaggeration/lies. This would have only turned people views towards the leave group. Although this was in my view way behind getting out of a dictatorship/restoring democracy and controlling immigration.

Also interesting that the exact same percentage trust/do not trust the media. What I take from the survey is that “leave” supporters are more likely to think for themselves. Terrible!
Of course, since that screenshot lacks data on methodology, sampling, how representative the sample is of the population, the error bars, etc., who knows how accurate the survey results are? Particularly since no category adds up to more than 89%. What did the other people say?

The Left is much more prone to “group think” than are those on the Right.
Group-think makes things easy: You don’t have to think for yourself, you just go along with the program like everyone else on your side is doing. You fit in. That way, you have confidence in the correctness of your worldview, because so many of your fellow Leftists look at the world the same way, so it *must* be correct. Most Leftists are uncurious followers.
Leftists think in simplistic sterortypes. That’s why they always lump people into different groups. They actually believe that all conservatives are racists, bigots and homophobes. That’s their stereotype. Trying to understand one conservative at a time, on a personal basis, is way too much mental work. Let’s just lump them all into one evil category and be done with it.

Immigration is not (nor has ever been) a major issue. It has the appearance as a major issue because of our tendency to want to develop scapegoats for unrelated problems. It’s the same rationale Hitler used to blame the Jews and the same rationale Britain used to justify oppression.
Those groups who are least able to defend themselves become the scapegoats. For instance, illegal immigrants are easy scapegoats because they can’t respond without risking expulsion.
This is the except same issue with climate change — the need to find scapegoats. We develop reasons why any and all responses are invalid (“the science is settled” or “only those reimbursed by oil companies disagree with Climate Science”.) This way there is no response which can be made.

Syrian and other refugees are thanks in large part because the EU opened the door, laid out the carpet, and handed out party favors to whomever arrived. The flaming success of the initial trickle led to the raging river of migrants. The Europeans brought it on themselves.
Regard Sweden: they still vote in the very people whose immigration policies have made Stockholm the rape capital of Europe. There should be riots in the streets of Germany to force out Angela Merkel.

Joe may have a good technique there. In fact, I may start using “Global Warming” as a universal reason for anything I like. Whenever I speak with Progressives, I’ll say,. “I am in favor of smaller government because Global Warming!” “I believe in natural rights because Global Warming!” or maybe “don’t bother trying to change my mind because Global Warming!” Since Global Warming is now my reason for everything, whenever they disagree with me, I will just tell them, “What?! You deny the science?!”
The fact is, using logic and reason with them has never had an effect. This might be fun… 🙂

Romm: “Recent events, especially Trumpism and Brexit, are omens of the disunity we face. Trump’s campaign is driven by racist statements”
If you actually listen to what Trump says, it is not racist, but the Left always puts the worst spin possible on anything any Republican says, and that’s what they are doing here: massively distorting what Trump says, and then attacking him using the lies they have created.
This is standard operating procedure for the Left: They namecall and try to assasinate the character of the Republican opponent because that is the only way they can win. They can’t win on the merits or on what they have done for people in the past that benefitted them because they can’t name anything worthwhile that they have done, so they try to divert attention from their shortcomings by demonizing the opponent.
Hillary, is a perfect example. When Hillary gives a speech, she doesn’t get up there and say, “I’ve done this, and this, and this, and American lives have been made better as a result. No, instead she talks in generalities about what she will do in the future, very unspecific, for a reason, and in addition she trashes Trump.
The reason she doesn’t cite her past record of achievements is because she doesn’t have a record worth mentioning. In many “Man on the Street” interviews I’ve seen, the questioner will ask a Hillary supporter to name three things Hillary has done while in government, and I swear, I haven’t seen one person be able to give three examples. Hillary’s and the Left’s only alternative is to trash Trump and hope they can make people think Hillary is the lesser of two evils.
Romm: “and wildly impractical plans to wall off the country”
There are lots of examples of successful border walls. Lots of new ones are going up all over the world even as I write this. If I was a betting man, I would bet Trump can probably build a wall better than anyone on Earth. Hopefully, we will get to see this wonder take place.
Romm: “literally and figuratively from various ethnic and religious groups.”
Nope. The wall is meant to keep out ALL illegal immigrants, of ALL racial and ethnic and religious groups. No discrimination here. None of them get to come in unless they are legal and properly vetted and will benefit the U.S. by their presence.
I bet ole Romm has a lock on his house, what do you want to bet. Should we call him racist for wanting to control who goes in and out his front door? I don’t think so. So Romm shouldn’t call us racist for wanting to control who goes in and out of the front door of the U.S., for the same reasons.
All you get out of the Left is vitriol and namecalling. Without that, they would be lost.

There was a severe drought in Syria during the 1960’s when there was a population of some 4.5 million. Around 2012 there were over 20 million. Lack of infrastructure, a hostile government, a general move from the country to the town depleting the number of farmers, and a burgeoning population combined wth a drought that was historically not out of the ordinary all conspired to cause the Syrian crisis .
This staggering population increase is occurring in many countries unable to cope with the consequences and any deviation from ‘average’ weather conditions is likely to cause problems. In fact the weather will have to be very cooperative if all the new mouths are to be fed.
Mathus is not considered a polite subject here though.

Begs the question; how many refugees is enough to relieve the population pressure in an overpopulated area when there are no brakes on reproduction. In the West we attempt to give our kids a better life by limiting our family size. The Catholics have learned this as well, in spite of what Francis the Fool has to say. Perhaps population control is done by suicide bombing in the only acceptable way in Islam.

Forgot to mention this below:
Education and increased wealth seems to have one of the biggest impacts on family size, regardless of whether birth control is available. Family sizes in the US started dropping in the 1800s long before the pill existed, condoms and other forms of control were easily obtained, and when abortion was still abhorred by the vast majority of the population, particularly feminists*(!). This will make a leftist’s head explode: the easiest way to limit population growth might be to let Africa and other developing countries have as much electricity as they want.
*Back then, feminists generally were not completely unhinged, despite having actual challenges and threats. They also knew the real definition of equality. But I digress. 😛

I am not sure anyone can answer my question, but I will throw it out here just in case. For most of my life, I have been told that malnourishment and/or not having enough food to eat will cause a woman to stop menstruating. As I understand it, this SHOULD make it impossible for her to conceive or support a pregnancy. However, many countries that supposedly have a large proportion of the population with malnourishment/starvation issues STILL have massive birth rates. I read about women who are unable to produce milk to feed their baby, but they also have a 1 year old, a 2 year old, etc., even though the food insecurity has been going on for 1-2 years or even longer.
Is the “common knowledge” wrong? Is it an assumption that sounds right, so no one has really looked to see if it is true? Does it only apply to certain populations? The claim does not seem to square with the evidence. If you can, please enlighten me!

You can see that in the pro-Brexit poster from the U.K. Independence Party (above) — which became a major advertising campaign of the referendum — featuring thousands of male refugees streaming from Croatia into Slovenia last October

This is a lie. The poster referred to appeared on June 13th, ten days before the vote. The campaigning groups were established last October, although it could be argued that campaigning in earnest didn’t begin until April. Immigration of all sorts was an issue long before the appearance of this poster. The only effect of the poster was to rile the Left, who didn’t like it.

How can anyone would take anything that Joe “Permanent Drought” Romm says seriously? I guess there may be a couple possible reasons. Total ignorance? Mental incapacitation or disease? Brain tumor?
But to be sure though Romm has now changed his prediction of permanent drought in the SW US to “by 2050”, if there is a significant La Nina and Texas goes through a dry period during it as it has in the past, the Romm will be out there saying “I told you so” and the same publications that printed his 2011 claim of a “permanent drought” will no doubt take his ravings seriously and print them again. It’s as if they can’t read weather records.

There is an elephant in the room.
Before the protests and breakdown of society into civil war, Syria was experiencing a very serious problem.
Yes, there was unemployment and high food prices – and consequent unrest.
But why? This article from 2010 offers a very possible explanation:
“Syria now has a population of 20 million people, with a growth rate that remains one of the world’s highest at about 2.4 percent…according to the Syrian Commission for Family Affairs.
“We have a population problem, no question,” said Nabil Sukkar, a Syrian economist formerly with the World Bank. “Unless we cope with it, it could be a burden on our development.”
Well, it certainly did turn out to be a burden to their development. And now a burden to everyone elses.
And in the last few weeks, President Erdogan of Turkey explained to his people:
“I will say it clearly… We need to increase the number of our descendants. People talk about birth control, about family planning. No Muslim family can understand and accept that!”

The social justice-inspired humanitarian disaster (e.g. “Arab Spring”), and its segue into anti-native (e.g. refugee crises, mass immigration) actions, was a first-order cause of catastrophic anthropogenic government waning. However, the “green” industry correlations, and other economic misalignments, are known forcings. The EU was just the first victim of progressive anti-native/pro-immigrant, pro-choice policies and CAGW.

Australia, [turned] back the boats, and successfully slowed the flow of mostly economic undocumented migrants to a trickle.

But wait according to the EU and Obama and other self-anointed enlightened ones, doesn’t that make Australia racist, xenophobic and just as bad if not worse than the Nazis? I am just saying that is exactly what they are saying.

…a major 2015 study confirmed: “Human-caused climate change was a major trigger of Syria’s brutal civil war.”

LOL. Yes wars never occurred in the Middle East prior to the internal combustion engine and electricity. And as Romm implies the war would not have been as brutal if not for climate change. There must be of course major studies that prove that not only was the weather milder but the wars were milder as well before dreaded modern civilization took hold.
Oh for the good old days of friendly non-climate-change wars with pleasant weather.

Come off it. how many people learned enough of the background of the Koran at school to know that many of the rules were to mitigate the damage done by constant warring factions in the region. The three wives rule was because of the shortage of males after so many were killed in the factional wars.
Think about it if there were roughly equal numbers of males and females as would be normal without war killing off large numbers, the three wives rule would certainly have guaranteed civil unrest and tribal warfare anyway to kill off the males from two other tribes.

The author is right on the facts but wrong on the explanation. Global climate propaganda has created bureaucracies against which people revolt. Brexit was indeed partially fueled by all of the stupid efforts on the part of the EU to fight this imaginary dragon. Similarly, Trump’s popularity is due in part to populist revolt against this same phenomenon here in the US.
So, yes, both Trump and Brexit ARE caused in part by global climate change.

June 29, 2016 6:06 pm

I love how Romm attempts to belittle Trump by lumping all he states into either “racism” or “building a wall”, and call it “Trumpism”. How about calling Romm’s ideas “Rommism”?
It seems to me that when the idea of Global Warming first appeared we took the time to carefully inspect the ideas. It was only when they one by one proved wrong that we began to bristle, and then it was because the Alarmists increasingly refused to debate.
Calling another an “ism” and going la-la-la with your fingers in your ears is not mature behavior, Mr. Romm.

If I was Joe Romm trying to hinder Trump’s chances, I would absolutely start shutting up about trying to link the result of the popular vote in the UK referendum to US politics.
“Project Fear” by the media has so far only worked to Trump’s advantage in the US, and has just suffered an Achilles-tendon rupture in the UK. I hate to have to do his job for him, but Joe Romm just shows no aptitude for learning.

June 29, 2016 7:36 pm

Romm: “Trump’s campaign is driven by racist statements …” This is a standard of progressive lying cant.
Expect increasingly frenzied progressivist accusations and lies as the campaign proceeds. Also expect the MSM to play them up for all they’re worth.

In a sense they are right that global warming caused Brexit. It was actions like the Global warming taxation imposed by unelected Brussels officials and the subsequent belief that having got away with this they could do anything they wanted regardless of the will of all the member nation’s population the caused Brexit and has triggered more to start thinking the unthinkable of opposing a Merkel controlled Brussels.

More tinfoil for Joe. Left/right, left/right – the never ending march to the Madness of Crowds?

July 14, 2016 6:16 am

In a way it did. The constant hypocrisy of the Left, the constant demand that people live in poverty to save the planet (except those who made the rules—they can live in luxury), the distaste for all of humanity, seeing people as parasites all contributed to people being fed-up with the arrogance and hatred espoused by those who are supposed to be governing “for the people”. Any actual changes in climate had nothing to do with this, of course, but the entire global warming community is very helpful in pushing the populist campaigns along. People are tired of being doormats for the rich and privilege who exempt themselves from all consequences of regulations and laws.
