Claim: Climate Causes More Young Girls to be Raped

According to Reuters, in Guatemala, young girls don’t get raped because they are stalked by filthy perverts, who are shielded by what appears to be a rape enabling culture; Apparently Climate Change is to blame.

Women’s organisations – and funders – are increasingly seeing climate change as a root cause of women’s problems

COPENHAGEN, May 20 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Carla Lopez remembers the first time she heard a suggestion that climate change was a factor leading to the rape of young girls.

“I was in Santa Maria Xalapan of Guatemala when a group of women said young girls were being kidnapped and raped because there was a water crisis. It was a revelation,” said the executive director of the Fondo Centroamericano de Mujeres, a women’s fund based in Central America.

In the indigenous Xinca society of Xalapan, men often kidnap and rape young girls before marrying them, Lopez said, and for about a decade, the local women’s group had been campaigning to end this trend.

But in the last two years, groundwater was becoming scarce, because of weather changes and increased mining in the region. As women and girls had to walk further to fetch water, the number of kidnappings and rapes more than doubled over that period, local women said.

Will those poor young women really be helped if Guatemala builds a few extra wind turbines? Or would it be more useful to try to provide more security for young women at risk of being assaulted, to continue and intensify efforts to stamp out what seems to be a perverse normalisation of sexual violence, a twisted acceptance of rape as a form of courtship?

I’ve see this cropping up everywhere, this kind of thinking.
It’s natural intelligent intuitive linear thinking within the confines of a concept, unfortunately none of it is based in any empiricism, heck, not based on reality.
They might point to India but that is a cultural problem. Same for the middle east, where as Africa is in tatters and lawless in many parts.
Rapists do not factor weather into their plan, ever, which debunks the whole nonsense claim
Some SJW cretin came up with this cack.

“Rapists do not factor weather into their plan, ever, which debunks the whole nonsense claim.”
The issue is not weather, it is the women being at risk for longer periods of times as they are walking longer distances, and thus exposed to risk for greater lengths of time. If I walk home through a bad neighborhood,. and change my route so that my route is 2X as long, it stands to reason that I will be at greater risk.

Will those poor young women really be helped if Guatemala builds a few extra wind turbines?

Those women would be helped if deeper wells and windmills to pump water were provided and hopefully that is what they are going to do with their grant

The group of young women came to us and said that they were going to campaign for women’s and girls’ access to water, because that was the main reason behind the rise in rapes and kidnapping. So we provided them a grant of $15,000 that was usually reserved for climate projects,” said Lopez

The increase in CO2 currently saves the world about 15% of the water required in a 280 PPM world. As there is no increase in global drought then net water savings due to CO2 must be preventing such crime.
Of course if the governments of the world offer trillions of dollars for pseudo research, and can blame the climate bogyman for ALL failings, especially their own, they will happily do so.

Two of those young girls were talking at the “water hole” while filling up their water jugs when one girl asked the other one, ….. “What are our mothers going to say when we get back home and tell them that we were raped twice today?
The second girl quickly responded, “RAPED TWICE?? … But, but ….. we were only raped one time.
And the first girl responded, …. “But we are going back the same path we got here, right?

This is the sort of thing that infuriates me as a human being and as a woman (with three sisters). Rapists make a very deliberate choice to rape. This choice is not an accident, it is not a mistake, it is not caused by outside sources. Blaming anything other than the rapist is evil in itself, as it implies that the crime is excusable under certain circumstances. Rape is never acceptable, regardless of what a culture or society claims. (Yeah, I said it.)
False claims and statistics obscure the issue. Vulnerable people cannot be protected if actual risks are ignored or downplayed, or statistics are so exaggerated that said risks cannot be identified. This evening I read another repeat of the “one in five college students” statistic, in the WaPo magazine. The person who repeated this REPEATEDLY DEBUNKED CLAIM was a woman from my university. This sort of lie tells me that the person telling it is either so ignorant that he/she has missed the repeated debunking and have not bothered to check the facts OR he/she is deliberately spreading false information. Neither reflects well on anyone. I have crunched the numbers for my school, and I have serious doubts that a) 3,000 women are being raped at my school every year, and b) well over 2,900 of them are not reporting it. Pretending that 3,000 women are raped only makes it more difficult to figure out what the risk factors are and how to reduce them. Special snowflake safe spaces are not going to stop rapists from raping, and they are not going to give effective support to real victims.
Instead of trying to use a false flag (climate change) to promote the supposed cause (preventing rape, one hopes), report the real problem (traveling to accessible water is dangerous, and greater distances increase the odds of being attacked). Once the ACTUAL problem has been identified and reported, a practical solution can be implemented, one that might work. Shutting down fossil fuel plants, etc. will not prevent rape, nor will it decrease the potential danger for these ladies in Guatemala. In this particular situation, digging wells, laying pipelines to transport water closer to communities and homes, and/or using cheap energy to provide power and transportation would allow women to access water without traveling massive distances (or to do so via motorized transport). Unfortunately, that still will not solve the problem of a culture and society that condones kidnapping and rape as acceptable modes of courting (or whatever this is supposed to be). Would that I or anyone else knew how to change those attitudes.
I know that was a long rant, but this kind of dishonesty really burns my biscuits. Trying to tie a serious atrocity like rape to a fictional issue is heinous. If state AGs really want to sue someone, how about starting with these jerks?

I am pretty sure that lawlessness in cultures that have women as subservient castes is what causes rape to be prevalent.

Hey Mark – Helsinki! “Have we really evolved or devolved as a group?”
Yes. Yes, we have.
Western culture, industrialized western culture, has become so distanced from any traditional life style that large fractions of our population are effectively insane. No one doubts that if you take an infant and let him grow up in a state of confined bed rest, his body will be completely atrophied and essential unusable. The mental and emotional state of many of our citizens is the psychological equivalent of that atrophied body. They have never developed either their logical abilities nor their ethical strengths because they have never had too. They have grown to “adulthood” in a culture that has been so prosperous that they never suffered any negative consequences from their lack of growth.
I feel very sorry for them — but I have no idea how the situation can be rectified without serious pain and suffering.

I really don’t want to go there on the core subject of this post, but only to comment that whilst mining is cited as a possible reason for the water crisis, a general lack of water means people have to walk further in order to fetch it, with another cause likely to be an explosion in population from 4.5 million in 1960 to 15.5 million today.
The increase in population around the world is extraordinary, often in poor or already climatically compromised countries that can least afford it. This affects water, food and other resources. The trouble is that often when it is mentioned here commentators mutter about Malthus.

It may surprised you, but the number of total sexual intercourse could decrease and the number of rape increase at the same time. And the study you are referring to was about sexual life in Australia. This article is about Guatemala. Not the same situation.
I could also use the title used by WUWT (“Claim: Climate Change will Stop Women from Wanting Sex”) to explain to you that usually, when a woman (or a girl) is raped, the woman does not want sex. But actually the WUWT title was misrepresenting the article it was linking to (as often). The original article didn’t make a gender distinction.

…what seems to be a perverse normalisation of sexual violence, a twisted acceptance of rape as a form of courtship?…
Er… abduction and rape of women was actually a fairly normal process in most countries in earlier ages, and is still common today in several parts of the world. More commonly known as ‘Bride Kidnapping’ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bride_kidnapping it stems from a time when women were considered property, similar to cattle. The word ‘rape’ (Latin rapere) originally meant to ‘seize and take away’, and the threat of having your women stolen was a major reason for secluding them inside houses after puberty, as was common amongst the Greek City-States. The Romans, of course, famously stole the Sabine women. You will find many similar examples of it in mediaeval Western literature.
Western culture is rather different today, but the practice of abducting women is not a ‘perverse normalisation’, rather, the retention of an earlier cultural system through to a time when that practice is no longer considered acceptable…
I find it a little ironic that Climate Activists might blame this cultural throwback on industrialisation, particularly if their suggested remedy is to return to the practices of an earlier age, when this habit was much more common than nowadays…

Reply to  Dodgy Geezer
May 21, 2016 12:54 pm

Geezer,
Good point. If I may expand on it:
There were lots of things that were considered normal at the time, like stoning for adultery. But we’ve become more civilized over the centuries (with the exception of certain reprobates in the Middle East). But these climate hustlers are no more than enablers of rape. They excuse it with the words “climate change”.
Also, “The Rape of the Sabines” was memorialized in a painting, but as you say, it wasn’t what we think of as rape. One of the tribes on the Italian peninsula, the Sabines, had raided and captured some Roman girls because they needed wives.
They timed it toward the end of campainging season (summer), so the Roman tribe had to wait until the next spring to mount an offensive to rescue their sisters and daughters.
But when the Romans appeared at the Sabine walls, their women came out on the ramparts and shouted down at the Romans that they were perfectly happy in their new role, and they didn’t want to be rescued! (Those Sabine studs must have been real sweet talkers. Among other things.)
So after plenty of consternation and lots of discussion, the Romans accepted their pleas, and left the girls where they were.
That was early in Roman history. Later, all the local tribes were consolidated under Roman rule, or in alliance with Rome.
So, for the young folks edumacated in the Peoples’ Socialist Soviet of California… now you know. And while we’re at it, you should also know that the “climate change” scare is a false alarm.

From Frommers: Tips for Women Travelers:

“For lack of better phrasing, Guatemala is a typically “macho” Latin American nation. Misogyny and violence against women, while not rampant, are part of the social fabric. Women should be careful walking alone at night throughout the country. More and more hotels are ratcheting up security measures for women traveling alone on business or for pleasure. Some are even offering secure “women only” floors, with the added perk of spa services.”

On top of the machismo (bad for all females), some indigenous groups have very different ideas of when a girl becomes a woman: 10 or 11 may be considered “old enough”. There is the added difficulty of whether or not these actions are protected as part of the indigenous culture. If the culture considers the kidnapping/rape normal and acceptable, can Country X prosecute? Do Country X’s laws about consent and age of consent apply to indigenous groups? Every so often, I read about some 10 or 11 year old indigenous girl from Latin America who stumbles into a hospital or clinic to give birth, and the ensuing debate over what (if anything) can or should be done.
If someone had done that to me at age 10, the government would not have had to worry about what to do. My dad and grandfather would already have taken care of it.

2) Build a water system that creates potable water
3) Build water pipes to the villages
Problem of women walking long distances to fetch water – solved. And it would cost a lot less than trying to reduce harmless carbon emissions. And it doesn’t matter if climate change occurs or not – it fixes the problem regardless.
The real problems are the things that prevent this from happening:
1) Corrupt political systems and lawlessness
2) Over population in poor areas of the world
3) Elite activists who don’t care about the real problems but focus on their pet projects
Its strange, but my daughter going overseas as part of a religious charity to build infrastructure is doing more good than all the climate change activists put together – and religious people are becoming despised in this country. I just can’t grasp how many people think anymore.

How about just stop apologizing for rapists and imprison them?

Wrong.
The only way to fix this is to recognise and abandon all marxist newthink. SJW, feminist, warmist… these are all merely facets of Marxist theory of everything.
Reality check is actually very simple. Feminists wants us to believe that women are at risk of rape greater than the numbers recorded in Democratic Republic of the Congo, where rape was enforced as a weapon of war. There is no such industrial-scale rape going on anywhere else. Yet we must believe we live in a rape culture, and everything SJW women dislike is rape.
Just stop giving this tripe any credibility, and keep your sanity. No point giving this undeserved credibility.

“Yet we must believe we live in a rape culture, and everything SJW women dislike is rape.”
As of a few years ago . . and then we must accept hordes of young male “refuges” (also attributed to climate change) that actually are from a “rape culture” of sorts . . lest we be accused of racism (?) by the SJWs . . and one wonders about the potential “globalist” influence on these timely outbursts of Western civilization judgmentalism . . taken ever so seriously by our tearless leaders . .

A substantial percentage of humanity is mentally ill, and the rest of us are so ill-equipped to deal with that fact that we pretend it isn’t even so.

Did climate change cause the Obama Administration to adopt their new bathroom policy? The new policy allows any man, including perverts and rapists, into the lady’s room, as long as they claim to identify as a woman. Actually, they don’t even have to claim it because you’re not allowed to second guess them or question them in any way. So first, they tell us there’s an escalating “rape culture” on college campuses, then they enact bathroom and changing room policies that can only make the problem worse.

Unbelievably disrespectful. Always blame something other than the perpetrator, always, if you’re a progressive retard. In their minds, nobody is to blame for their own bad behavior.

http://katereggadennis.blogspot.com/2016/05/are-gender-inequalities-in-trade.html?utm_campaign=shareaholic&utm_medium=linkedin&utm_source=socialnetwork resulted in this LinkedIn comment by Billy K. Lemons . . . who has a VERY dry sense of humor, as follows:
Did you know that one can be kicked out of the Sierra Club for belching more than his/her/his-her/her-his (depending on how one “identifies” at the time) allocated share of belches after eating or drinking? … unless of course one buys certified belching credits from other SC members who don’t intend to use them.
Belching credits purchased from non-members can be substituted for those from members, but only at half the rate of those from members.
You see, belching credits allotted to, and that can be purchased from, full members contain a special natural non-toxic component that combines with the holier-than-thou elitist breath of members so as to yield extra methane capture capability.
Persons of the lowly “worker” class who do not qualify to join at the elitist “professional person” or “queen ant” classes may join at the lower “comrade worker” class and qualify for three-fifths the belching credits. But they have no rights to vote in the organization or to serve as officers.

I think there is a lot of truth to this. Bill Clinton flies to “Pedophile Island” 40 times. It is very warm if not hot there. He rapes many young girls. It is not lack of character, global warming made him do it.

Hang on, I thought the “A” in Climate Change* was for anthropogenic?
Ah, I see it now, its circular, a runaway greenhouse effect causing a runaway breeding effect!** Population growth causes C02 to increase which causes temperature to increase which causes population to increase…
There is only one solution to the problem and it is totalitarian! /sarc (For Maoists only)
*Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW) was the common term pre Newspeak. Climate Change replaced AGW, it was simplified to just “Climate” but it is slated for further purification to become just “Change”.
Change will be a pejorative term in the perfect world created by our dear leaders, so it too will ultimately become a hate word! Change will then be replaced with “Unchange”, becoming “Changenot” before simplification to “Not”and the more pure “No” which, due to its negative connotations, will be replaced by “Yes”.
**Rape is forced copulation, despite it being both Illegal and immoral!

May 21, 2016 11:36 pm

There is a radical solution to all these pervasive climate related problems. One that all aspiring SJWs should embrace:
Ban climate!
It’s a simple radical solution to a host of injustices flowing from climate issues – discrimination, mis-labelling, economic exclusion, rape, donkey-bothering, the list goes on but the true progressive who wants to stay relevant can only accept one solution:
No more climate! An end to snow and its oppressive whiteness! No more rain and rape-inducing wet t-shirts. No more cold or hot and the misogynistic baggage associated with these terms. No more phallic tornados! A world without climate – safe and free for all, the bew progressives’ dream.

Why not? After all, the president of the UN himself has a name which means a slogan to ban the moon.

I would agree with the sensational headline. All the money that USED to go to projects like fresh water sources has been siphoned off into building wind towers and jetting to climate conferences. The developed world has fallen behind in what WAS a growing program designed to improve the lives and health of indigenous populations by bringing energy and clean water to their doorsteps. Who’s feet should be covered in the cause of young children being raped? Green watermelon feet.

This same exact silly claim (more rapes due to climate change because girls had to walk longer distances through dangerous territory to get water) was made several years back by some CAGW alarmist. I don’t mean to make light of rape, but this claim is laughable. The need to get water is gender neutral. Men can carry more water because they are stronger. Civilized and educated people everywhere, including those in the eco-radical NGOs know how to set up police forces, dig wells, pipe clean water to remote villages, and even truck water in emergencies. The CAUSE of a rape is the rapist.

I’ve commented on a few variations of this kind of thinking and see in them unmistakable (unwitting perhaps?) racism. I written on the egregious notion that ..”to give a (non-white) man a fish, he can eat for a day; to teach this helpless fellow how to fish, he can eat for a lifetime…” How bloody arrogant, how paternalistic the sweet superior “kindness” of this kind of philanthropy. Here in this cradle of humankind, where its inhabitants had flourished for 3 million years, we are going to teach him how to stay alive!! Even the ‘science’ of sociology is too lofty to frame these other societies. We created ‘anthropology’ to deal with such people.
I witnessed it first hand in the mid 1960s when I worked for the Geological Survey of Nigeria (I wasn’t a technical aid worker. I was a civil servant who got a job with the newly independent government of Nigeria). There were technical aid projects back then – I got seconded by the government to a large regional UN geological and mining development project which had run aground for lack of personnel who knew anything about mining development. There were truck loads of superfluous PhD’d professors that I had to push out of the way to do the job.
The shock troops preceding the massive white NGO conglomerate that was to flood the continent to guide these ‘unfortunate backward folks’ crying out for our wisdom, cleverness, guidance and protection, were the 40 something-year-old virgin missionaries in long skirts, white ankle socks and sensible shoes, shepherded by sweaty, black suited, white collared preachers with bad skin who were a century (at least) redundant in their own European societies. First, bring them the whiteman’s god and the rest will be easy. I recall during the height of the white feminists’ war against men a few New York warriors going to the very spiritual Dogon people to emancipate their women!
A recent racist idea of the “Team” is that of Islamists in the Middle East who are killing thousands because of climate change!! Of course such as we of the north, who can shoulder the world’s burdens without a flinch, don’t buckle in the face of climate change. The Guatamalan rapists are just another reason why we of the north are so essential. Only such as we can keep a cool head in the face of mind annihilating climate change.

This would be the same Xalapan where a couple of years ago the government suspended legal rights in order to crush local opposition to a big silver mine that the locals thought would affect water sources, no? Guatemala apparently has a generally pleasant temperature but rainfall varies drastically throughout the year, so during the drier part, you’d be more vulnerable. Sounds to me like just perhaps it’s the mine that’s the reason for the long trips for water, which means politics, not climate change, is the issue. i have not been able to find that there has been any detectable climate change in the area, and the linked article does not as much as mention “temperature” or “rain”. Don’t these people use numbers any more?
A woman who had worked as a missionary in Papua New Guinea told me once how disgusted she was seeing a woman toiling along a jungle track with a heavy load, while her husband ambled ahead carrying only a machete. And then she realised, he wasn’t slacking, he was her bodyguard, he wasn’t carrying a load because he had to be ready to defend her from attack in an instant, he wasn’t turning his head to idly enjoy the scenery but to look for attackers. It seems to me that an able-bodied man with some sort of weapon should be able to accompany the women on their way to water and back. But wait, this is an area where the government crushed a protest a few years ago. Are the honest men of the region *allowed* much in the way of weapons?

Just a couple of comments: First of all there are documented cases of aid agencies building water supply systems so the women don’t have to fetch water, and the systems were repeatedly vandalised – by the women, who missed the opportunity to get out of the house and meet with friends. Second when I was working in Dushanbe, I remember my Kyrgyz landlady telling me that her sister was going to be kidnapped and forced to marry next Friday. She didn’t say raped, but it was probably part of the package. It was the traditional way it was done.

Actually, more rapists stay home because the temperatures are too high to stalk girls. And while we are at it, the soaring global temperatures are slowing down construction worker’s abilities to build transgender restrooms. So driving a car to the store is nothing less than a hate crime.
