Can you imagine doing this with the millions of turbines needed to energize the UK when the UK is once again under a 100% ice up? The notion of it makes the UK pols look utterly ignorant of the critical need for reliable energy.

I notice there seems to be no wind in that picture. The spray mist is just hanging there.
So, by the time the wind returns the blades will have iced up again anyway.
Modern version of tilting at windmills. Even madder than Don Quixote, without any of the honor.
The only possibly slightly madder variant would be to try that with the turbine blades still spinning.
Global Warming? Possibly if science proves it!—-Man induced? I doubt it! Why don’t the “Alarmist” mention the Co2 footprint emission put out by all the volcanoes all over the globe. It’s my understanding from what I’ve read that ONE volcano spews more Co2 than man has since his first footprint! (If we filled all the volcanoes with POLITICIANS then all they would spew out would be HOT AIR!! (Hum-Still global warming I guess!)

Lyle, I can understand that reaction. They spent a LOT of money on their electric jalopies. In a few years, they will need to spend a LOT more on new batteries. And then you tell them they’re actually burning coal. They never seem to be smart enough to work that one out before they are told.Thus, the reaction. Doesn’t it make you feel warm and fuzzy inside to get that comment?

The only thing I see here is an illogical opinion formulated over a possible illogical tactic. Rejecting such attempts to off set pragmatic solutions to a very detrimental global warming phenomena that may very well effect future generations.
Actually, if you do the math, assuming the deice takes four hours, 16 GPH for the helicopter, full power on the oil warmer, and a 1 MW turbine, the turbine will replace that fossil fuel in about 4 hours. At the average output of a typical, well-sited turbine, about 10 or 12 hours. More energy than the turbine “will ever produce” is a pretty outrageous statement. If you oppose these things, that’s your right. But seriously, more than it will ever produce? Did you even THINK about that statement? Your opinions should be drawn from facts, not vice-versa. Another example of dumbing-down the internet with non-facts.

I had to laugh out loud at Orvs comment.
Those of William Reiter and wtk make for good logic,
Freedom of speech on the internet by those that write dumb comments and actually believed by some should be given a rating value showing an icon of expression such as a thumbs down.
Technology will resolve the problem of icing up of turbine blades I have no doubt.
Means available using sun energy during the day to generate heated transfer media such as glycol through plate collectors and stored in well insullated tanks in the tower body and pumped through veins built into the baldes when needed for de icing. The turbines own energy could contribute to this.

How about charging the electric car batteries with renewable energy? wind solar, hydro? Looks like some countries are getting there and coal fired power generation will eventually become a thing of the past.
Fuel efficient F1 power systems are finding their way into upmarket cars too. Technology is in vertical mode. Every day something new.
Power from poo is nothing new.
With the worlds population growth there is an endless supply.
and yes fuel for cars from poo too.
Could that possibly be called renewable energy?

Safe distance = 1.5 * (hub height + rotor diameter)
Under certain circumstances it is possible that any
occupied structure, road, or public use area are located close (but not inside the area) to this Ice throw safe distance, either they were build before or after the turbine installation. Of course those situations are avoided as much as practicable but for the few turbines of a wind farm close enough to public installation minimizing ice throw risk is a requirement.. So don’t expect the total number of wind turbines to be deiced. It would be interesting to see of the ground on the pic…
