Blanca Juti, chief brand officer for Rovio Entertainment, wants to leverage the popularity of their blockbuster Angry Birds game franchise, to raise awareness of “global warming”.
According to Bloomberg;
“You can learn a lot about the world around you from gaming,” said Blanca Juti, chief brand officer for Rovio Entertainment Oy. “Games talk with you, they don’t talk at you.”
The Finnish company is establishing a partnership with the Earth Day Network, following similar moves it made in the past. Rovio joined NASA in 2012 to promote Angry Birds Space, which offered insight into the weightlessness of space and planetary physics. It was unveiled on the International Space Station by astronaut Don Pettit, who used a stuffed version of the game’s character “Red” to demonstrate the science of trajectory.
The obsession in some quarters, with raising climate “awareness”, is a mystery to me, given that the media is saturated with climate scare stories, every time there is a gust of wind somewhere photogenic. The problem is not a lack of “awareness”, the issue is that most people have other priorities.
The Angry birds franchise has been suffering a fall in sales lately, though some of their ideas for keeping the franchise going have been good – I liked the Angry Birds Space Game

The problem is that the alternatives, ie running devices on software from Google or Microsoft, are no better. The irony is that these companies use enormous amounts of energy, which is why they build in the Pacific NW, to take advantage of cheap hydropower from the evil, fish-mincing dams. Not to mention the much less cheap bird- & bat-bashing windmills, which require coal-fired backup & the output from which requires making hydro production less efficient.
I tutor kids part time in Hong Kong. The ones I teach all know CAGW is nonsense. One recently brought me her global warming homework. Boy did we have fun putting together 10 charts demolishing the teacher’s assumptions. Worth getting the likely politically correct failing grade. But then again, the seed sown might just grow.
Getting rich by selling a pointless game does not give you any authority to raise any awareness to people.

Most of us who play games realize we are in a fantasy world and need to leave anything we learn from a game behind us when we turn off the gaming system. You would think game producers know this, but apparently not all do.
I watch Japanese anime, even pay a subscription, to watch what is currently showing on Japanese television (even at age 71). Should I infer anything serious about the Japanese culture from watching their anime programming? Other than the fact that some things seem to be funny in all cultures, it would be a disservice to an entire nation to do so. I will say I see too many young people these days who have difficulty distinguishing fantasy from reality.
I sometimes listen to the “Do your best!” type anime lines and wonder. What if it is a subtle way of influencing children? You see a lot of things that may be cultural, promoting group activities over individualism, but what if they’re not just cultural but an attempt at enforcing beliefs?

Well when testing jet engines for resistance to bird ingestion FOD (foreign object damage) they use air cannons with the engine at full power (dead birds of course). Sometimes, someone forgets to thaw the bird and it’s not a pretty sight as far as the engine is concerned. And I would not call the following a successful bird strike test:

The upside is that I think they were finally pretty accurate on a poll saying that half the nation was deniers. i think it’s more than that though.

Oh yes indeed. I recently had the most wonderful picnic with 5th grade students in the California Bay area. One child brought a book and wanted to read with me. I’m not sure if this was a school district issued book or something purchased off the shelf but get this. If you look at their logo, it may seem obvious, but Rovio is a Finnish word meaning bonfire or stake (as in burning witches on the stake). Telling perhaps of the company’s mentailty towards differing opinions.
They don’t have sufficient democratic leverage, despite liberal distribution of opiates. They are hesitating to force it through executive action or judicial decree. As it is, neither public school nor public television have been able to establish a flat Earth society. We have elections here in Finland next weekend and the party most likely to win is planning to go crazy with renewables. Besides our “own UKIP”, all the parties have batshit crazy energy policies.
