An online Indian news source has published a collection of electronic messages allegedly sent by Pachauri to this unnamed 29-year-old woman. They now form part of a police document known as a First Information Report (FIR). The online version of these messages is difficult to read, so I’ve cut-and-pasted the text, added some formatting, and produced a 23-page PDF available here.
Pachauri, the recently resigned chairman of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has PR flaks and a legal team. What is his version of events? Here’s a quote from a Reuters news story:
[Pachauri’s] lawyers have said his computer and mobile phone were hacked and that vested interests were maligning him because of his outspoken stand on global warming.
Shadowy, nefarious interests are out to get him, so they hacked his electronic devices to make him look bad. Nice try, but few people who examine firsthand the text messages and e-mails Pachauri says are fake are likely to believe that.

…Pachauri is apparently the kind of boss who not only expresses opinions about whether his subordinates should go to the gym, he’s the sort who tells female employees:
I am yours for life…and will always be yours, even when someone else enters your life.
And you have hurt me so often by being inconsistently cold on so many occasions. Not letting me touch you, even though I have always treated your body with reverence and as sacred. Perhaps, you regard a physical relationship as a matter of expediency and convenience. Well I don’t, and certainly not with your body which I worship, as you should have found out by not. Even when I “grabbed you body” I had my left hand over your right breast. Did I make even the slightest attempt to hold it in my hand or fondle you there? [typos in original, p. 6, line 180+]
He’s a prize, all right. In a few lines, he criticizes her for trying to fend him off, implies that she must be a slut since she objects to his ‘reverent’ embrace, and argues that he’s virtuous because he didn’t take as many liberties as he might have.
As the Shub Niggurath blog observed yesterday, this sordid saga took a vicious turn in December 2014. Not wanting to sit beside him on a plane one more time, this young woman attempted to sit on her own in economy class. Pachauri allegedly responded with an e-mail that reads in part:
you should reflect on the massive insult you heaped on me by indicating that I was so toxic that you would prefer not to sit next to me on the plane. If that be the case there is no room for any interaction between us…To me that act of yours represented the ultimate in haughtiness, arrogance and insulting behaviour. If you had any human sensitivity you would have realised what you have done, and possibly apologised.
You are welcome to remain a paid guest of TERI. I really would not burden you with any work in future. [p.20, line 754+]
I’ve read all of these electronic messages twice. They tell the story of a young woman who, following months of valiant struggle, perseverance, and vast patience effectively loses her job because she won’t let her boss grope her.
At the end of the police document, the complainant sums up her overall experience:
Whenever I had to travel with Dr. Pachauri for work, he would use the opportunity to constantly say vulgar and demeaning things to me. Whenever I sat next to him on the flight, he would try to hold my hand and tell me how much he loved me. If I ever spoke to any other male colleague, he would remark that I was going to sleep with him. I made repeated requests and pleas to Dr. Pachauri to stop this behaviour towards me. I have categorically told him not to touch me in appropriately or to hold me or kiss me, but Dr. Pachauri did not stop…
I feel broken and scarred in body and mind due to Dr. Pachauri’s behavior and actions…I get frequent panic attacks due to the constant harassment and being made to feel like an object of vulgar desire from this man, who is old enough to be my grandfather…
Till date I was extremely scared of going and reporting the behaviour of Dr. Pachauri, as he is the head of the organization for which I work and I did not know who I could turn to for help. I have tried to ignore and brush aside a lot of offensive behaviour from Dr. Pachauri as I was very scared of losing my reputation and employment if I complained to anyone…I request you to register my complaint against Dr. Pachauri and bring him to justice. The power grab that warm-mongers have enjoyed during more than decade is likely to have produced other monsters like Pachauri. Again, it is unlike that there are many. However, those that are still on the loose must be stopped without delay.
It is necessary for those warm-mongers with a conscience to break ranks and denounce the behavior of Pachauri from the rooftops of every one of their outlets and with the force of the billions of dollars they have amassed for propaganda purposes so that these monsters are incarcerated and their victims are freed from torture. Running such a large organisation and traveling extensively around the world by plane he must use email? No?

It is impossible to coordinate a planetary scam without communication. Michael Mann was coordinating his tricks with the temperature record by way of email with HADCRU. I think Pachauri’s email will be a treasure trove of schemes, slanders, and other bad stuff.

I don’t know Indian law, but this is a criminal complaint, which means a government prosecutor will subpoena Pachauri’s emails, not the complainant’s attorney (of course there may be a civil action filed as well). The complainant already has all the emails, texts, voice-mails, etc., sent to her and I guess they have been made public by virtue of filing the complaint.
What is likely to come out is there are other recipients of harassing communications who have not come forward on their own and the prosecutor will no doubt contact them to see if they are willing to join the complaint. If so, then those emails would be disclosed, either at the time of signing a complaint or later at trial.
)As an aside, it is an interesting legal question is whether the Indian courts can subpoena emails sent from Pachauri’s IPCC account(s)).
What will not be disclosed is the content of other emails not related this criminal investigation. In other words, don’t expect to read emails detailing Pachauri’s participation in pushing junk research or suppressing scientific debate.

I have noticed from experience that people, like organisations, are consistent. For example, if a person is consistenly truthful in one set of circumstances, it’s likely that they’ll be truthful in a different set of circumstances.

I tend to agree with Jake J comments. This isn’t a story about climate change or IPCC. It is a story about a pathetic perv inappropriately sexually harassing a subordinate. It is a story that should be told and be widely spread in the press – but not with any effect on the climate change discussion but solely on inexcusable actions in what should have been a working relationship. The fact the guy appears to be a perv has no bearing on the science or politics of climate change. I also think the CAGW alarmism perpetrated by the IPCC, greens, and media is terribly wrong which WUWT is correctly challenging. But this isn’t a climate story.

It is a story about a leadership culture which has held itself above all accountability. Infallible, never making errors and all who oppose it have been branded as heretics, and many have lost their careers.
This lack of accountability leads to arrogance without bound. Do not cut these clowns any slack. Remember – Capone was eventually done for tax evasion.
This story is actually more about power than sex. This is not sex in the warm meaning of the word, it is power abuse by a man who appears drunk on his power. That such a man was been left at the top of the IPCC says a lot about the people around him, they should have recognised that he had serious personality problems that would degrade the work of the organisation he was in charge of. Because of what he was doing this lady, and probably others who had to work with Pachauri, would have been unable to work efficiently for the IPCC.
The public do get very angry about these sorts of incidents, in Britain we have had Jimmy Saville at the BBC and Stoke Mandeville Hospital in France they have had Strauss-Khan at the IMF. The question always is why were these people not controlled by the people around them? Why were people looking away whilst this was going on?

My first reaction is that despite how bad his actions appear (and how unflattering his photos are), and with no attempt to diminish the complaints of the woman, we would all pray to be deemed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
My second reaction is the same as many others’. Ignore the man; stick to the science (or lack thereof).
From these two perspectives, this and similar articles do not belong on WUWT.
HOWEVER …
The IPCC is not a scientific but a political-scientific body. And it exerts tremendous influence. If there is corruption of any form at the tippy top, then that calls into question the credibility of the entire body and its output. Political science is about driving agendas through — and the ends justify the means. Anything goes. Logic (and avoiding logical fallacies) do not apply.

As an addendum to my prior comment, this story about the perv would make me exceptionally cautious about the honesty of anything the man has said on any subject, including the subject of climate change. From the notes provided, it is clear that any person capable of such communication is delusional, and there is no reason that such delusions would only extent to a single topic of sexually harassing subordinates.
I agree to a point, but this and other articles lately go far beyond impugning his integrity. This is its own form of ad hominem attack, even if the material is factual. This is the first time I’ve seriously questioned how Watts Up is operated. I might agree or disagree with comments, but I’ve always regarded the material being commented on as valuable, (mostly) rigorous, and always relevant. Not this.

Interesting, the Willie Soon witch hunt has been going on for a while now, and I have not seen anyone critical of him say “stick to the science”. It is all about the man, in this case.
It is true, this is not a climate story. But it IS an IPCC story, and so is fair game.
I, for one, have said EXACTLY that — stick to the science — on the NYT’s comment section. I think their recent attack on him was despicable, and highlights the sad and worrisome decline of a once-great newspaper. Unlike too many people on both sides of various issues, I apply a single standard to everyone and everything. It’s the essence of integrity and independence, or so I think.

There has to be an association of people around this man who know him and what his behavior is like. Why would such a person be allowed to remain in a position of power and influence? Was it because they knew his character and it served their purpose well? I think so, and this tells us much about the methods we have observed to sustain the global warming machine and for that reason alone this a story that needs to be told and this is one place to tell it. It is intriguing that many of the characters in the warming crowd have strange personality quirks. Gore and Mann come to mind too quickly. There are others.

Before any reports of sex harassment claims hit India’s media, I did not consider Pachauri intellectually rational and did not think he had professional integrity in his leadership. I thought, in other words, that he was the typical IPCC insider.
The sex harassment claims against him, if confirmed in court or by corroborated independent investigations would make me loathe him.

Given how brazen he is in this despicable behavior it is extremely unlikely that this behavior is limited to one or two women, and extremely unlikely that it has not been a very long-standing pattern. Let’s hope that the investigation is thorough and relentless, and that other victims are willing to go on record.
What is astounding is the courage of this woman to bring this into the glaring light of open knowledge, knowing the potential for backlash against whistle blowers in the global warming community, let alone the backlash against women in India who call foul. She decided to row against the current big time. I want to know who this woman is and how she got into the organizations and businesses related to Pachy. His hand is (was) in many cookie jars. That he put his hand on the wrong cookie jar and she fought back is a credit to this woman’s bravery and may very well lead to interesting discoveries. My hat is off to her. Amazing.

Maybe the new government in India gave the complainant hope that she’d get justice if she came forward. If she’d done so earlier, the police might have ignored her, or the press would not have covered her tale, or Patchy’s bigshot friends would have aided his coverup and purported to believe in his hacking claims.

It should be possible to do a word distribution count comparison between the complaint text and patchy’s book. I am inclined to think that some complete phrases might be repeated. Just sticking to science.
After reading the 23 page PDF of the emails, I have to take a different stance. Despite all of the many reasons to dislike Pachauri, I think he was truly in love. The full-on limerance, head-over-heels, painfully obsessive kind. Cupid’s arrows spare no one they target, and life and literature are replete with tales of happy endings and misfortunes including broken marriages and shattered careers. And woe unto those who whose love is unrequited. Their desperation reminds me of Dante’s inscription over the Gates of Hell “Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.”
That’s not love, it is infatuation. Love requires putting the needs of someone else above your own. Clearly he cared only about what he could get out of any relationship.

When compared with the monumental list being accepted as “bad things caused by global warming”, no stretch of credibility would be required to accept such a legal pleading and let the good Doctor get back to important poetic work.

rtj, I think you’ll find that much of what he was engaged in IS a crime, a perversion and something to be very ashamed of. He was blatently sexually harassing this woman, if the texts and emails are genuine and there’s no reason to think otherwise, especially as this is not the only woman to come forward. They guy abused his position of authority and high authority at that. Women are particularly vulnerable in countries like India and those who want to sweep this under the carpet are just following in the footsteps of generations of people who thought it was ok to treat women like second class citizens. Even in the West it’s hard for people (including men) to prove they’ve been bullied by their employers. Texts and messages like this are proof of how secure he felt in his abuse. For every text there would be hours of similar, verbal assaults that would come down to her word against his and be almost useless in court. If nothing else, spare some thought for the torment of the victim and that he’d probably got away with his behaviour if he hadn’t added the final insult of effectively sacking her.

Exactly right. Pachauri is a manipulator. I’ve met exactly this sort – they just don’t stop and it’s always the other person’s “fault”. That he’s further lying about it and claiming to have been hacked points to him knowing his actions are wrong. If he actually thought he loved the woman, a normal response would be, “But I love her,” not “It wasn’t me! I was hacked!”

Getting back to the realms of reality, there’s absolutely nothing funny about sexual harassment for its victims. Like Donna, I find it hard to credit that these are not genuine. They tell a very convincing tale of a woman trying to balance keeping her career, genuine repulsion for the attentions of an ugly old man and even some sympathy for a respected elder. For every sentence in text, you can guarantee that there would be hours of similar unwanted attention.
The techniques used in the emails are similar to those recommended by pick up coaches like Julien Blanc who was recently banned from speaking the UK and sent home early from Australia because they’re unacceptable in a modern society. Those techniques rely on emotional bullying and exertion of power until the victim caves in to the abuser.
Yes, we should try to avoid schadenfreude at the IPCC’s expense, even though they have had several opportunities and recommendations to ditch the guy for legitimate reasons in respect to climate and credibility. However, this kind of abuse should be of concern to everyone, not just sceptics. In this case the bullying was sexual but bullying is bullying. Too often we see the consensus side use their position of power to silence the other side.
Around the World, a series of high profile people (ok men) have fallen from their lofty perches because their underlying behaviour was horrifying. Investigation reveals that those around them knew that those men were behaving badly, even if they didn’t realise the full magnitude. They could have been stopped far sooner if those people had not turned a blind eye because they felt the men involved were too important to good causes to be subject to normal rules of behaviour. The Catholic Church, charities, the BBC and even the IMF have harboured monsters because of a ‘greater’ good, and those abusers have only been stopped once the public found out and kicked up a fuss.
It may not be science to highlight bad behaviour but it is important that we don’t ignore it because of some higher moral imperative and that includes sticking to science instead of what some feel is gossip.
