From the “the hornier they are the harder they fall” department: The head of the United Nations climate change panel (IPCC), Rajendra Pachauri, has stepped down amid sexual harassment allegations.
The BBC reports as of 12 noon GMT today:
The head of the United Nations climate change panel (IPCC), Rajendra Pachauri, has stepped down amid sexual harassment allegations.
A spokesman for Mr Pachauri told the IPCC that he had resigned from his position with immediate effect.
Indian police are investigating a complaint from a 29-year-old woman working in Mr Pachauri’s office in Delhi.
Mr Pachauri has denied the allegations.
Lawyers for the woman say the harassment included unwanted emails as well as text and phone messages.
On Monday, the 74-year-old had pulled out of a high-level IPCC meeting in Kenya because of “issues demanding his attention in India”, as an IPCC spokesman put it.
The IPCC has since confirmed that the meeting will instead be chaired by its vice-president Ismail El Gizouli.
Mr Pachauri had chaired the IPCC since 2002. In 2007 he collected the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the organisation for its work in the scientific assessment of the risks and causes of climate change.
We all knew it was simply a matter of time.

I myself prefer this option because it means no women (two, so far) would have been assaulted by the creep.

He should have resigned years ago when the infiltration of his organisation by non-scientific green groups was revealed. He should have resigned years ago for all sorts of other reasons related to the work and workings of his organisation. The irony now is that he has resigned for a reason that has no direct bearing on the output of the IPCC, no direct bearing on the science or even on the politics. But then, the people who are scientific, who do care about climate science, and who have tried to question the ridiculously high levels of confidence in the IPCC reports and the ridiculously expensive “solutions” to problems that occur only in computer models and not in the real world, these peope have been subjected to relentless and merciless personal attacks and in some cases have had their careers destroyed. I do care if some women have been harmed by this man, and I do care whether justice is properly done for them, but other than that I just don’t care what happens to Mr Pachauri now. He’s gone. Think about it: suppose the manufacturer of salty snacks needs a new CEO. The organization is going to select someone who believes in the current business, not some health food nut. Instead, they’ll go to someone with the necessary skills for running an organization and has the appropriate cultural fit for the organization.

There is damning pysical evidence in the form of retained emails, including the victim insisting on cease and desist. Pauchuri did not deny they existed. He claimed he was hacked and they were not from him. That is when two other past victims stepped forward with sworn accounts now reported by India Times. From there, it was 24 hous to his resignation. The ongoing police investigation is criminal, not civil, law.
Pachauri’s explanation of fabricated emails and texts, etc., of course, also explains the UAE FOIA emails. They’re all fabrications. All of them.
Phil Jones never wrote that he used Mike’s nature trick or would downwardly revise the peer-review system, Mike Mann never wrote that he’d contact others about deleting emails, Kevin Trenberth never wrote about explanatory travesties. I am 65 years old and have been teaching in a chinese university for 10 years. I have had numerous offers from young girls ( I am handsome) and didn’t go there. Am I a saint? What is reallly surprising is that the BBC reported because they have not said a word about this since it began (the scandal) last week. If fact no major US or British paper has covered this (MSM I Mean) which shows their complicity in the AGW scam clearly.
Guardian does, they have realized it is no good to silence the case, it would be the opposite of damage control. It is better for them to write about it (in a very quiet way, not as if they would have done if a sceptic had been accused of this) and hope it will blow over. No doubt a sensible tactic.

I also have no opinion to express on his guilt regarding the accusations. I am entirely ignorant of the prevailing Indian law, so I can’t even comment on the process. My only comment is that in terms of IPCC policy and practices, the resignation and replacement of Pachauri will make no difference.
The lack of transparency, political selection of principal authors, copious citation of activist “grey” literature, and claims of diplomatic immunity to FOIA requests will all continue as before.

The most Pachauri will get is a slap on the wrist or some fine. He didn’t actually do anything apart from the occasional touching. Probably some annoying perv that didn’t accept ‘no’. It was true love from his part. The reason the girl was resistant was because he chose the wrong words and wrong time to communicate with her. Not his fault. The stupid bitch should have known he truly loved her and cared for her. He showed much patience by doing this over an extended period of time. Stop picking on a man in love.

I think his resignation letter should be described as “Take the money and run”. Sexual harassment is only one aspect of the malfeasance perpetrated by this fraud. His and Al gores climb to wealth was built on the back of AGW. Why these obvious conflicts of interest is of no concern is mind boggling.
So I get a few scientists to claim the road salt used in winter could cause the zippity frog harm. I petition the government for relief for the zippity frog, greens come to the rescue of the zippity frog and oh by the way I have a company that has developed a product that may counteract the effect of road salt on zippity frogs. I make a bundle, even though it was never really clear if any zippity frogs were in danger and everyone is happy except the taxpayer who would rather have money spent on safe non-icy roads rather than perhaps averting possible ambiguous harm to zippity frogs.
Replace road salt with CO2, the zippity frog with climate and you get the idea.
They should also follow the money with Patchy.
I hope he fights all charges to the bitter end, shouting, screaming, and denying. I hope he uses every dirty trick in the book, to avoid coming clean. That kind of spectacle would truly reflect and expose the tactics of alarmist warmers. We should all encourage him to resist with all his might. GK

IF he was dumb enough to engage in sexual harassment in emails, one wonders what else he was dumb enough to communicate in emails.

Actually, i can’t see this as a downer for Pachauri. This is more of a timely escape. He has gotten out before the whole global warming fraud could blow up in his face. He will now only be cursed in memory instead of being a poster boy. (Notice that he didn’t fight to maintain his position. These accusations are actually something of a godsend to him.)
Or to use another metaphor — his stocks have been rising for years and selling now he took a slight haircut on his profits but has gotten out before the coming crash.
We are going to be seeing less and less of the big “political” names as they find ways to disappear into the background. They know the jig is up and are slow-walking for cover. (Al Gore has been fading into the background — has anyone noticed?)
So who is going to take the fall? Any of the “scientists” of climate who do not retire quickly or if they are too young, who do not begin to recant. The young ones are going to have to walk it all back if they want academic careers in the future. The ones to walk it back first will be the ones furthest from the explosion and safest from the fallout. And the explosion is coming.
Even one or two of the really big names of global warming science could save themselves — if they made a sudden renunciation — while flaying their former colleagues. But that will only work for the first one or two. And they need to toss red meat to keep the hounds off themselves. So who will be first? It’s a real prisoner’s
dilemma.

Frankly the resignation of Pachauri from the IPCC will change absolutely nothing. In fact it may be a deliberate ploy to distract attention from other events. Even if it isn’t the deranged AGW fanatics are not going to stop. For them the cause is everything.

The assertion is that Pachauri is a perv.
Now he has to avoid the fathers, brothers, husbands, and boyfriends, of the women that worked for him. If he fails to do this, he may understand, for once, that there are “tipping points” in the “real world”.
The whole science is based on harassing, bullying and threatening the careers of other scientists into towing the line on global warming. It is not much different than what the former head of the IPCC did.

Funny how history (and climate) repeats itself in ways not always recognized.
For the sake of holding onto any residual credibility left in the IPCC after the Copenhagen failure in December 2009, GW crusaders should have insisted Pachauri leave the IPCC in December 2009. That he hung on for a little over 5 more years was a boon to skeptics and a liability to CAGW consensus worshippers.
So, who is on the short list to permanently replace Pachauri?
My thoughts on considerations for replacing Pachauri:
a) If there is no formal AR6 (as in one produced on the same schedule and in similar format as FAR, SAR, AR3, AR4, AR5) then the profile of the next IPCC leader will be almost zero. So, that means even Lewandowsky puppeteer John Cook could be just as inept as Pachauri was.
b) If the IPCC charter remains to produce more full scale ARs, then Pachauri’s replacement cannot be a hard scientist, it is too late for that to work. His replacement will be a senior bureaucrat from some innocuous backwater organization.
c) China as the home country of the next IPCC leader would have many cunning and intriguingly layered aspects.
d) Brian Williams (temporarily suspended NBC news anchor) could be almost as good a fabulist for the IPCC as Pachauri was.
e) Pick a new IPCC leader who wants to relocate the IPCC HQ to a base on the dark side of the moon where they cannot directly see the Earth . . . you know the old adage ‘out of site, out of mind’.

Googled “Pachauri resigns” and WUWT came up third after the Guardian and BBC. That’s how little coverage it’s getting in US papers. –AGF
Hard to say, false allegations do occur. In ON about 9.0 % of sexual abuse allegations are false. The OPP officer coordinating such matters is a barracuda against false claims, as she believes they really hurt many of the valid claims (the 91 %).
Revenge is a typical motive. (Some people get whacko – in the disgusting case of the McMartin school in California the first claimant was psychologically troubled, her allegations were bizarre so should have been investigated immediately.)
A case in court in Vancouver BC accusing a former school teacher, since then a prominent official in sports, found that two of the claimants were enrolled in schools hundreds of miles away at the time of the alleged offenses. The third dropped her claim after evidence was revealed to her. Theoretically possible I suppose that they got time confused, less likely place, but I have not seen details.
So while I’d like to see the IPCC jerk bounced firmly and disgraced, it is early to predict the outcome. (Since the whole climate alarmist scheme is unravelling anyway he’d be wise to duck out, but as a True Believer he may soldier on. Of course, if the court system in India is as slow as it is here it’ll take years to decide his guilt or innocence.)

I read he has been accused of many ethical errors, and now several women have come forward to support the claimant’s accusation of inappropriate behaviour to females.
(In the case of the jerk air personality of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation there seems to be fire beneath the smoke, but he gets his day in court eventually, meanwhile is out of the job.)
Pachauri’s resignation would seem to remove him from the IPCC for good, especially if his lawyer’s claim of serious health problems is not exaggeration. (Hard to tell from single words like “coronary”.)
Let’s keep an eye on how the court proceedings pan out. We may learn interesting things that we haven’t been privy to yet.

Rolf Harris was stripped of his Australian “honours” after sexual harrasment charges were proven (He’s in gaol now). Will Rajendra Pachauri have his Nobel peace prize and other awards and honours stripped too if proven to be guilty (And hopfully sent to gaol)? Not been reported in Australian MSM, but I do feel there is some distraction going on with Willi Soon (So far not reported in Australia) and Abbott (I feel he is about to lose the leadership of the LNP and the postion of PM sadly) under attack in the media.
Defenders of the climate faith are now claiming that the personal indiscretions of Dr. Pachauri are irrelevant to the matter of climate change. While strictly speaking this may be true, his behavior is nonetheless very relevant to the credibility of the IPCC. Those who put ethics aside in seeking to gratify their personal desires are unlikely to restrict such behavior to only one narrow area of activity and are not comfortable with those who adhere to a higher standard of ethics. In positions of leadership they tend to surround themselves with others of similar ilk and are prone to preside over corrupt administrations. Pachauri’s resignation only serves to confirm the already well founded suspicion of dubious integrity associated with the IPCC. One wonders how much more blatant the IPCC corruption must become before sovereign nations begin to themselves find the integrity to disassociate from it.
