Canada: Climate Extremists a credible threat

Guardian / leaked Canadian Government memo

Greenpeace: too stupid to realize that hot balloon photo op is powered by fossil fuel
Greenpeace: too stupid to realize that hot balloon photo op is powered by fossil fuel

Story submission by Eric Worrall

The Guardian has published excerpts of what it claims is an internal Canadian government memo, which suggests that the Canadian government is far more worried about Climate extremists, than Climate Change.

According to the Guardian;

“The US security establishment views climate change as real and a dangerous threat to national security. But Canada takes a very different view, according to a secret intelligence memo prepared by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

The memo, stamped “Canadian eyes only”, repeatedly casts doubt on the causes of climate change – the burning of fossil fuels – and its potential threat.

The 44-page intelligence assessment of Canada’s environmental protest movement was prepared for the government of Stephen Harper, who is expected to roll out new anti-terror legislation.

In the memo, obtained by Greenpeace and seen by the Guardian, the RCMP repeatedly departs from the conclusions of an overwhelming majority of scientists – and the majority of elected leaders in the international arena – that climate change is a growing threat to global security.

Instead, the memo on the “anti-Canada petroleum movement” presents continued expansion of oil and gas production as an inevitability, and repeatedly casts doubt on the causes and consequences of climate change.”

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/feb/18/canadian-mounties-target-anti-oil-activists-in-secret-memo

The memo, at least the excerpts published by the Guardian, suggest that the green extremists try to avoid casualties when conducting criminal acts. But since the radical greens have no problem with using improvised explosive devices, arson, sabotage, theft and break and enter in pursuit of their anti-petroleum agenda, a credible threat exists to the safety of both the members of the groups conducting illegal acts, and to oil workers who operate the facilities targeted by the green terrorists.

The fact that this internal memo was leaked to Greenpeace, suggests that green activists may have successfully penetrated at least some of the Canadian government agencies tasked with maintaining public safety – a development which seems likely to increase the concern of Canadian authorities.

schitzree – we had a particularly bad winter last year. It seems to alternate.
This time last year I had about 8 foot high snow piles lining my driveway. This year, 3 feet, and not the whole length. Last year the snow started in November and the same snow was still on the ground in April. Right now, although lightly snowing, the lawn is clear (except for the driveway edges)
I’ve never, EVER felt that one month or even one year’s weather should be reason to be concerned. After all, I’ve been looking at Environment Canada’s records, and according to them the historical weather events that I clearly remember didn’t happen. So in 3 years you can look forward to this cold snap no longer having happened.

Its a fact that Saudi and US money(Tides,Rockerfeller etc etc) given to “EnviroMENTAL” groups are trying to shut down the O&G business in Canada. Some indication Russian money as well. Its big money, and the money is really all about trying to keep Can oil(competition) off the world market through any means possible. There are some useful idiots, but its mostly paid protesters.

The quote is truncated. It should read, “overwhelming majority of feather-bedding climate scientists”.
I know lots of scientists. Those from the physical sciences are overwhelmingly in disagreement with the position of the UNFCCC and the IPCC on the matter of CO2 and climate, believing that there as a lot of hyped and overstated, claimed physical effects. It is bad math contradicted by observations and historical data and proxies. I find in particular geologists are completely unconvinced by the alarming claims. So far I have not found one ‘believer’ in the geological community.
That they do not ‘speak up’ is hardly surprising. When something is so obviously wrong, what is there to talk about?

We’ve had our environmental extremists behave violently here already so this report is no surprise. Five police cruisers were torched in New Brunswick in the fall of 1913 by anti-fracking demonstrators.
http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/10/17/new-brunswick-shale-gas-protesters-pepper-sprayed-police-cars-reportedly-set-on-fire/
On the other hand, given the apparent politicization of the RCMP in the last decade or so, it is somewhat encouraging that they are taking threats by environmental extremists seriously.

Easy, the precursors of fracking go all the way back to the 1860’s when nitroglycerin charges were detonated in hard rock formations. Some guy actually patented a device called a “torpedo”. I can’t remember exactly how it worked, but effectively it directed the explosive force laterally from the borehole, fracturing the surrounding formation.

May be a concern on a federal level in Canada, but the province of Ontario is still all-in:
http://www.ontario.ca/environment-and-energy/climate-change-consultation
“Climate change in Ontario
Extreme weather events like tornados, floods and droughts are just one aspect of a changing climate and scientists tell us that extreme weather is now part of the new normal.
In Ontario, we have already felt some of these effects in the form of ice storms, severe flooding and millions of dollars in damage to our infrastructure. These losses demonstrate that the cost of doing nothing is high.

I drove home past the Milton gas-fired power station located next to Hwy 401 yesterday. It was cranking out steam you could see for miles through the clear, frigid, Arctic air. Those power stations are needed to offset the useless, expensive Ontario-subsidised windmills that are not turning from Perth to Bruce Counties.
We are paying a premium of about 50% for the NG electricity over baseline and a factor of 8 for the wind power. The price of electricity is shooting up, plunging more and more people into energy poverty. Last night it was -28 C in Waterloo.
This Hydro One rise in charges has stimulated a call for action:

I wonder if they know what their world would look like if we go along with their agenda? No petroleum development would put most of them out of a job. No heat, no car, no electricity. That would be a lot of fun. Where I live there is a campaign against burning wood, so after they eliminate all other sources of energy, on a rainy day, I can’t even build a campfire to get warm. Neighboring tribes will easily take over.

West Virginia has a population density of 75 per square mile. A University of Oklahoma study suggest that the average homeowner who burns 3.5 cords of wood per heating season needs 10.5 acres to supply wood in perpetuity. There are 640 acres per square mile. You can sustain 60 households per square mile. If each household has on average 3 people, that’s 90 per square mile. Definitely in the ball park if you live in West Virginia. For NJ (1210/sq mi), maybe not so much.

Bryan A: nearly everyone I know around me heats with wood. Our only option is propane.
Well almost.
At 52-22 North and 114-55 W we produce lots of NG but there is no NG service.
I heat a 3000 square foot house with wood. I get warmed 7 times: cutting the trees down, bucking them up, hauling and splitting them, filling the wood box, hauling out the ashes .., and oh yeah – burning them in my fireplaces. For when I am not home to stoke the fires, I have a super insulated house with solar gain windows, a water to water heat pump, a back up hot water propane tank, some back up electric heat for key areas (like well houses) and a 12 kW propane powered backup generator.
It gets down to 40 below at this latitude and the wood fired masonry fireplace keeps it toasty.
On top of that, I end up burning way more deadfall every year than the 5 or 6 cords of winter firewood. Trees are amazing. I worry more about them encroaching on my pastures than I do about them disappearing.
An additional benefit of wood heat is I don’t waste time driving to the city gym. I have all the exercise I need sitting in the woods around my house. Although in lazy days, I just saddle up a horse and ride out into the crown forests outside my farm gate.
I don’t worry about the trees and evapotranspiration where I live. Maybe if I was in Utah or Nevada …

Glad to hear that the Wood burning lifestyle allows you to get so much needed exercise during the winter. Fortunately for you, your home is located in a heaven for firewood, in fact you live in an area that is practically made of wood. Tis unfortunate for many others that the rest of the world isn’t as well forrested making this clean CO2 an option over dirty fossil fuels for everyone

Suzanne Goldenberg once commented publicly one of my WUWT guest essays, embarrassing herself by illustrating that she has not actually read it past the first paragraph. In this case, she is unable to see past her own biases and totally misinterprets, in fact reverses, the significance of the memo.

Canada will probably have a federal election in October. Based on current polls, the Conservatives are likely to lose their majority. It looks like we can expect a Liberal minority government.
We can expect the stance of the Canadian government to change. The NDP wants to roll back Conservative anti-terrorism legislation. To stay in power, the Liberals may have to give in to the NDP on that.
In the mean time, the RCMP and CSIS will continue to do ‘stuff’. If they do the right/wrong ‘stuff’ they could swing the election. It’s happened before.
It’s almost a slam-dunk that the Canadian federal government’s position on CAGW is going to change. The NDP sits on both sides of the fence because their base is both labor and environmental. The Liberals are mostly opportunists. On that basis, we can hope that the policy change won’t be completely stupid (but no guarantees).

That being said, 1 term with him at the head could put the liberal party away for at least another decade. We’ll see what happens when men with brains i.e. Harper and Mulcair tear him a new one in the debates. (I don’t like Mulcair and the NDP policies but I do believe if he ever got into power, much of his rhetoric would melt away in the face of reality).

I think the polls are grossly manipulated anyway. For some reason, the left love to make polls look like everyone is for them, presumably for the low-intelligence voters who just want to vote for whoever is popular. That tactic backfires, though, since it tends to energize the opposition into voting AND makes the laziest think they don’t need to since their side will win anyway.
I don’t think Harper will lose, but it will be a closer fight since the media has been HAMMERING anti-Harper rhetoric.

That looks like digital magnification, not an old typewriter. Note that the same letters of the alphabet are inconsistent (eg. a fat “i” and a thin “i”). This happens with digital magnification, where each part has to be represented by an integer number of pixels. With a typewriter, colour density can vary within a letter independently of line thickness, and this does not appear to be happening.

The FIR alleges Pachauri committed offences under Sections 354, 354A, 354D, 506 of IPC, which deal with outraging the modesty of a woman, sexual harassment, stalking, and criminal intimidation, respectively. Prashant Mehndiratta, a senior Delhi High Court lawyer representing the complainant, confirmed that an FIR has been registered after the alleged victim’s statement was recorded, a process that took over oneand-a-half hours.
However, a statement sent to the ET from a Pachauri spokesperson stated:
The Delhi High Court has been pleased to pass order dated 17/02/2015. The said matter came up for hearing on 18/2/2015 wherein modifications have been made in the said order for defendant no. 1, 2 and 3 only.
However subject to the modifications in the order concerning defendants no 1 to 3, the order dated 17/02/2015 is applicable to the defendants and continues to be operational.
Given the fact that the said matter is currently subjudice and the Hon’ble High Court is seized of the matter, it will not be prudent or appropriate to comment anything on the matter pending adjudication before the Hon’ble Delhi High Court

The US National Academy of Sciences has reviewed the budgets of federal research agencies for Congress and directed public tax funds to finance the following lies as scientific facts:

3. The Standard Nuclear Model
4. The Standard Solar Model

All of the above consensus science falsehoods are designed to hide our total dependence on the Sun’s pulsar core that first made and now sustains each atom, life and world in the solar system and the changing climate on each planet orbiting the Sun.

India tossed Greenpeace out on their ear.
Govt bans direct foreign funding of NGOs
The Centre has banned direct foreign funding to NGOs operating in India unless they fulfil stringent regulatory norms and show compliance reports. This is seen as the beginning of a process to block flow of foreign aid to NGOs, which, it perceives, are engaged in stalling developmental activities in the country. As per this exercise, the Centre has cracked down on NGO Greenpeace and placed on its radars thousands of other voluntary organisations receiving foreign aid.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has directed the Reserve Bank of India to take prior permission of the Home Ministry’s Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) Department before clearing any foreign aid to Greenpeace from Greenpeace International and Climate Works. This directive issued on June 13, will put on hold direct funding of this controversial NGO from abroad since each transaction has to be cleared on a case-to-case basis by the RBI….
Greenpeace Activists Banned from Entering India
The Centre has so far banned 13 foreign activists of Greenpeace International from entering India including nine from the UK, three from the USA and an Australian national.
These activists have been blacklisted as their activities were found to be in violation of visa rules and they were found to be training, motivating and organising Greenpeace India’s activists to create field level protests near thermal plant and coal mine locations, apart from other activities that would damage India’s energy security interests, Ministry of Home Affairs(MHA) has told the Delhi High Court….
Indian Express: Greenpeace whining
Seems India is not nearly as foolish as the USA or Europe.

While I don’t agree with it, at least I understand some of the arguments for adjusting past temperatures because of TOBS. So, what is the reasoning behind adjusting more recent temps upwards? Since TOBS is no longer a factor, is there some inherent problem with the thermosensors they use that makes them record lower values?

Zeke Hausfeather says over at Judith Curry’s
….For example, MMTS sensors tend to read maximum daily temperatures about 0.5 C colder than LiG thermometers at the same location. There is a very obvious cooling bias in the record associated with the conversion of most co-op stations from LiG to MMTS in the 1980s….
Which turns out to be pig feces in the extreme.
notrickszone reports
…German veteran meteorologist Klaus Hager, see here and here. The test compared traditional glass mercury thermometer measurement stations to the new electronic measurement system, whose implementation began at Germany’s approximately 2000 surface stations in 1985 and concluded around 2000.
Hager’s test results showed that on average the new electronic measurement system produced warmer temperature readings: a whopping mean of 0.93°C warmer. The question is: Is this detectable in Germany’s temperature dataset? Do we see a temperature jump during the time the new “warmer” system was put into operation (1985 – 2000)? The answer is: absolutely!…

So with just that wrong way adjustment they change the data by almost 1 °C and that does not get into dropping rural stations and smearing the data from airports for 1200 kilometers.
Dr Edward R. Long, Ph.D. in physics and a retired NASA scientist has provided more validation of data altering.
A Pending American Temperaturegate
By Edward R. Long
…We selected two sets of meteorological stations (48 each, with one station per each of the lower 48 states) from the NCDC master list. The stations in one set were at rural locations — a rural set…..
……..*oC/Century, 11-Year Average Based on the Use of
Station Set …….Raw Data* … Adjusted Data*
Rural (48) ………….. 0.11 ………. 0.58
Urban (48)………….. 0.72 ………. 0.72
Rural + Urban (96) … 0.47 ……… 0.65
The values in the table highlight four important considerations:
1) The rate of increase for rural locations, based on as-measured (raw) values, is small
(if not, in effect, zero) at 0.11 oC/century
2) There is definitely a UHIE in that the urban raw data has a rate of increase of 0.72oC/century. This tells us that man has caused warming in urban locations. This finding should not surprise anyone. On the other hand, because the rural value is 15% of the urban value, the UHIE has not caused warming in the rural locations, and it certainly has not caused a global sense of warming other than the aspect that the urban location values when averaged with the rural values produce an average increase which is larger than that of the rural alone.
3) The rural + urban value for the adjusted data, 0.65oC/century, is still less than the 0.69oC/century published by the NCDC. Thus, likely, there are more urban than rural sites used by the NCDC.
4) And this is the “Temperaturegate” aspect: The NCDC’s massaging — they call it “adjusting” — has resulted in an increase in the rural values, from a raw value of 0.11oC/century to an adjusted value of 0.58oC/century, and no change in the urban values. That is, the NCDC’s treatment has forced the rural value to look more like that of the urban. This is the exact opposite of any rational consideration, given the growth of the sizes of and activities within urban locations, unless deception is the goal.
The criticism this makes of the NCDC’s treatment of historical data for the contiguous U.S. is the same as a recent Russian paper made of the HadCRUT treatment of historical temperature data for Russia. For a thumbnail of the points made in that paper, click here.
So instead of adjusting city/urban temperatures DOWN by around 1 deg. C or more the adjust the rural stations UP.
A population density of only 100 persons per sq. km exhibits average warming of about 0.8 deg. C compared to a nearby unpopulated temperature monitoring location.
Corrupt doesn’t even begin to describe NOAA.

Another one bites the dust!
Seems the Big Con is starting to get a bit ragged around the edges. (snicker)
Ex-Bureaucrat Who Hired Jonathan Gruber Stonewalls Minnesota Investigation of His Work
April Todd-Malmlov, the former executive director of MNsure, the state of Minnesota’s Obamacare health exchange, is refusing to testify in the Minnesota Office of the Legislative Auditor’s (OLA) investigation into the troubled program. [She was subpoenad but never bothered to show.]
Todd-Malmlov hired Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber (as a subcontractor who developed the “Gruber-Gorman report” for Minnesota using his proprietary Gruber Microsimulation Model) in 2011, and approved $329,000 of invoices he submitted, all of which failed to provide the level of billing detail called for in his contract….
In December, Republican State Representative Greg Davids criticized Gruber’s work and called on Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson to investigate Gruber’s billings practices and require him to refund the entire $329,000 he received for his projections.
“The error rate for Dr. Gruber’s work is beyond laughable,” Davids told Breitbart News…..
Minnesota is not the only state or federal entity with unresolved questions about Jonathan Gruber’s billing practices and the methodology he used in developing his Obamacare related economic projections.
Todd-Malmlov’s stonewalling of the OLA investigation into the launch of MNsure, and Jonathan Gruber’s role in that launch, is consistent with Gruber’s own pattern of stonewalling questions posed by other state and federal authorities.
In Vermont, for instance, Gruber has yet to respond to inquiries posed in December by State Auditor Doug Hoffman, who wants details about $80,000 of invoices submitted by Gruber and paid to him by the state of Vermont for work purportedly undertaken by unnamed research assistants.
In January, Hoffman described Gruber’s response to his requests for information as “unsatisfactory.”…

Every winter the stratosphere over the North Pole cools, this begins when the sunlight can no longer provide the energy to heat the ozone. Without this energy, the stratosphere cools rapidly, creating a thermal imbalance with the warmer stratosphere further south. This imbalance creates a large pressure difference and combined with the Coriolis effect, creates a large strong jet stream, circumnavigating the globe in the stratosphere in an eastwards direction. This system is known as the polar night jet, and contained within it is a strong vortex – known as the polar vortex.
The polar vortex increases and decreases in strength depending upon how cold the polar stratospheric atmosphere becomes during winter. The colder the polar stratosphere becomes, the stronger the polar vortex – and vice versa. The strength of the stratospheric polar vortex influences the atmosphere below it in the troposphere.
The troposphere also has a strong vortex over the North Pole during winter, this occurs due to tropospheric temperature and pressure differences. The strength of the stratospheric vortex helps govern the strength of the tropospheric vortex and this directly affects the strength of the jet stream.
In colder stratospheric conditions the jet stream becomes stronger; the stronger the jet stream, the straighter it flows and during winter, this normally keeps it on a collision course with the UK. A powerful jet stream is associated with unsettled and milder air, often with periods of heavy rain and windy conditions as one depression after another charges in from the Atlantic.
In warmer stratospheric conditions the jet stream takes a more meandering path due to a weaker polar vortex. This allows cold air to spill further south.
Polar vortex is weak in places where there is an excess of ozone, which generates a higher temperature.
Now occurs this over Canada.

Re the threat to burn houses down:
I am aware of two incidents where this actually happened:
One was the fire-bombing of the Calgary Petroleum Club.
Another was the fire-bombing of a friend’s house who was a retired oilsands executive. In the latter case, if anyone was home they could have been killed – the heat was so intense the doorknobs melted.
These global warming alarmists are badly misinformed AND some of them are imbalanced and dangerous.
People like Al Gore and Jim Hansen are inciting violence when they spread their alarmist nonsense.
There is no credible scientific basis for the alleged global warming crisis. In reality, the global warming crisis does not exist.
Fossil fuels keep those living in northern climes from freezing and starving to death.

I am not sure what material was used for making balloons before the advent of fossil fuel byproducts. I am pretty sure the environmentalists have no idea as well. But that’s what they should have used if they had any integrity and more than 2 or 3 brain cells.
Of course it is a good thing they did not use a wood burning stove for the fuel, that could have been bad. They could have used batteries charged by solar and wind. That solution would never have gotten off of the ground and thereby been much safer than using dangerous and vile fossil fuels.

Many have a track record, such as:
– oil protests in NB
– behaviour on Burnaby Mountain
– The Family, who burned a resort in CO, one perpetrator was hiding in Canada
– known eco-vandal caught in BC when buying tools like chain cutters, someone recognized him
– Greenpeace and its even worse offshoots like Sea Shepard
– the ELF, several members discovered convicted of arson, ELF claimed responsibility for destroying a radio station tower near Snohomish WA.
As for the leak, many government employees are strong environmentalists, but careless is a possibility, cabinet ministers and their staff have inadvertently left confidential documents in places they shouldn’t have.

I like the Guardian headline – “Canadian mounties’ secret memo casts doubt on climate change threat”.
No doubt here, the threat comes from the environ-‘mental’ groups. On this issue they are crazy, rather than burn fossil fuels they would rather bankrupt us into fuel poverty and send us back to the dark ages or ‘year zero’.
This will do nothing for ‘climate change’ but just cause a collapsed industry, economy and death. The poor and vulnerable being the most at risk.
I understand many of them firmly believe in their cause having been hyped and radicalised by some stupid scientists, knee-jerk bandwagon media types, rich people and politicians with their snouts in the green subsidy trough and politicians after votes.
Do they not realise how much ‘decarbonisation’ and the billions spent to subsidise these inefficient green technologies are costing, let alone all the hangers on or ‘climate change’ ‘officials’ we are all paying the wages of.
The Earth needs saving from radicalisation and stupidity, not ‘climate change.

The fact that this internal memo was leaked to Greenpeace, suggests that green activists may have successfully penetrated at least some of the Canadian government agencies tasked with maintaining public safety.

Perhaps they had some help. The Great SIM Heist article in The Intercept details how US and British Intelligence agencies coordinated the penetration of people, systems and networks at Gemalto, the world’s largest manufacturer of SIM cards for cell phones. As a result they were able to steal the encryption keys for several billion phones (yes, that’s billion, with a “B” — Gemalto produces 2 billion SIM cards a year), allowing them to snoop voice, text, and data communications.
We already know the NSA snoops on government officials at every level, even those of our long-time allies. There is no chance the Canadian government could create and circulate a memo of this type without the NSA getting hold of a copy. Does anyone really expect the “most transparent administration in history” to refrain from making use of such information if it serves a political goal?

The Canadian parliament is is pushing though new anti-terrorism legislation in the wake of the attacks on Parliament Hill and the National Cenotaph last October. Naturally, environmental groups are expressing concerns that the new legislation will impact them by coining phrases such “Caring about the climate is not a crime in Canada” then going on with the usual palaver about how it’s saving the planet. This explains the timing of the leak, if in fact it is one. I’ve been grinding my way through the proposed legislation and while having limited concerns about the government overstepping, I wouldn’t call C-51 anywhere near as onerous as the Patriot Act.
