WUWT – 2014 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

2014_year_in_bloggingCrunchy numbers

About 2,500,000 people visit MoMA in New York every year. This blog was viewed about 44,000,000 times in 2014. If it were an exhibit at MoMA, it would take about 18 years for that many people to see it.

The busiest day of the year was September 16th with 344,980 views. The most popular post that day was Obama’s Lonely Climate Summit – world leaders are staying home.

Politicians and spin doctors have demonstrably underestimated the intelligence of the Mr. and Mrs. (your name here) of the world.
I believe that 2015 will be a watershed year for the “Global Warming” meme. I’m an optimist with a full glass. Low oil prices will underpin significant global economic growth and wash away the foundations of sand underlying the, rotten to the core, money grabbing alarmist scam weasels.
All the best for 2015 to all.

Eric, some of your submissions and posts have been invaluable to me. I’m a long-time (~2002) sceptic who also admires the achievements and products of Elon Musk. At the teslamotors.com website (mission, “make compelling EVs that people want to buy”), I was almost solo opposing The Narrative warmist bias of the EV buyers there (Musk and the company do not make many pronouncements on the subject, though the Precautionary Principle is part of the b/g rationale for ‘cutting CO2 emissions’ — Musk refers to this as opposing the “dangerous experiment with the atmosphere’ when he does speak of it) since about 2007. More recently, others have supported the sceptic position, though mostly for political reasons.
IMO both his car, and SpaceX (mission, “make the human species interplanetary”) rockets (which undercut pricing by the majors and Russians etc. to LEO and GTO by at least half, and are currently testing re-usable launchers which are intended to further cut the cost/lb to orbit by at least 2 orders of magnitude) are marvels of engineering — significantly superior to SLS and Orion, e.g., and the car judged by Motor Trend and Consumers’ Report as “the best ever”. If you decide to weigh in there, please get informed; although they are lib and green to the gills, there are many articulate and intelligent and successful professionals and entrepreneurs there, and I and others keep the climate and related disputes to a couple of ‘on-topic’ threads . I’ve been vociferous enough to be banned from viewing Musk’s Tweets, unfortunately, but there aren’t enough hours in the day or lifetime to follow everything! (Also banned from Real Science, which I regret, for persistently labelling Oliver Manuel, “Iron Sun” and Stalin’s Conspiracy pusher, as a Thread Bomber for repetitious OT soliloquies on the site, one of the few that hasn’t blocked him as WUWT has. )
I have not generally attempted to take on all comers with link-battles, just make assertions contrary to the massive group-think on climate, but I do often, with attribution, copy your essays there, because of their compact cogency!
I can rarely follow up the firehose of comment notification emails any longer, so apologies in advance if responses here go unanswered (which was why I missed the warnings to stop bugging O.M. on Real Science!!) for a long time, or completely.

All call out for Leif. It appears the solar large scale magnetic field has been interrupted. Why is the solar northern large scale magnetic field flat lining? The solar southern hemisphere is roughly 1 year behind the solar northern hemisphere.

(P.S. We are going to experience the cooling phase of a Dansgaard-Oeschger cycle. I predict planetary cooling will ‘change’ the climate change discussions.)
Greenland ice temperature, last 11,000 years determined from ice core analysis, Richard Alley’s paper. William: As this paper shows there the Greenland Ice data shows that have been 9 warming and cooling periods in the last 11,000 years.

No, there are no such cycles.
There has been a sudden slow down in the solar magnetic cycle.

Yes, those of us up to speed on the subject know that the temperature (T) rises or falls the most at night, and in winter, and in the higher latitudes. Greenland is at a high latitude. As your link says: The annual whole ice sheet 1919–32 warming trend is 33% greater in magnitude than the 1994–2007 warming.
But the subject is global warming, and global T has risen only a paltry 0.7ºC, over a century and a half! That is nothing. We should be very happy that global temperatures have remained so flat for so long.
Even during out current Holocene, global T has fluctuated a lot more at most times [I count at least twenty “hockey sticks” in that chart].
It is amazing that the entire global warming scare still exists, at the end of a long period of exceptionally mild, beneficial, and unchanging temperatures. The Big Lie method of propaganda is the only way I can explain it, because the real world completely contradicts the scare.

Global T does not fall at night.
Why?
Because only half of the earth is subject to night, the other half is experiencing daylight.

David, that was a sidetrack of yourself.
‘Global’ nighttime temp is predicted rise more than daytime temp. ‘Global’ has a special, spatially and temporally sliced meaning in here.
This is something people don’t get. When nights become warmer and winters less freezing at high latitudes, that is almost clearly something which is positive for people. At the same time, summer daytime highs move a little, which means we’re not going to boil.
Problems, like huge methane leaks from seabed, are more speculative, or they are downsides of a double edged swords. This does not mean I’m not scared, it is rather that the real downsides are still unrevealed.

William The Figure you post is really the key data set in climate forecasting – raising as it does the question of where we are relative to the millennial solar cycle. This Fig is from Humlum . (http://www.climate4you.com/) -(See Humlum’s overview section)
I include this Fig (Fig 5 ) in my cooling forecasts at
http://climatesense-norpag.blogspot.com/2014/07/climate-forecasting-methods-and-cooling.html
and also include there Humlum’s comments which also answer Phils question.
Here is what Humlum says and my addition.
“The present interglacial is about 2oC colder than the previous interglacial, even though the atmospheric CO2 concentration now is about 100 ppm higher.
The GISP2 record ends around 1854, and the two graphs therefore ends here. There has since been an temperature increase to about the same level as during the Medieval Warm Period and to about 395 ppm for CO2. … Clearly Central Greenland temperature changes are not identical to global temperature changes. However, they do tend to reflect global temperature changes with a decadal-scale delay (Box et al. 2009), with the notable exception of the Antarctic region and adjoining parts of the Southern Hemisphere, which is more or less in opposite phase (Chylek et al. 2010) for variations shorter than ice-age cycles (Alley 2003). This is the background for the very approximate global temperature scale at the right hand side of the upper panel. Please also note that the temperature record ends in 1854 AD, and for that reason is not showing the post Little Ice Age temperature increase. In the younger part of the GISP2 temperature reconstruction the time resolution is around 10 years. Any comparison with measured temperatures should therefore be made done using averages over periods of similar lengths.
During especially the last 4000 years the Greenland record is dominated by a trend towards gradually lower temperatures, presumably indicating the early stages of the coming ice age (Fig.3). In addition to this overall temperature decline, the development has also been characterized by a number of temperature peaks, with about 950-1000 year intervals. It may even be speculated if the present warm period fits into this overall scheme of natural variations? ”
I would assert here that the current warm period does indeed reflect a peak in the natural quasi-millennial temperature variation seen in Fig 5, and that temperature and climate trends from AD 2000 – 3000 are likely to more or less repeat the trends from AD 1000 – 2000. I would argue that knowing more precisely the timing of the peak in the current quasi-millennial solar cycle is the key to forecasting climate trends over the next several decades and the next several hundred years.
I would hope that in 2015 there will be much more discussion of this natural cycle approach to forecasting here at WUWT,

I would like to see more as well. Modern science is of the opinion that chaotic systems cannot be successfully predicted. Yet the ocean tides are chaotic and we successfully predict them with great accuracy.
However, we cannot predict the tides from first principles, using the forcing and feedback method in climate models. Thus, this suggests there is a means to predict climate, but the current approach favored by climate models will not succeed.

ferdberple said: “Yet the ocean tides are chaotic and we successfully predict them with great accuracy.”
In what way are ocean tides chaotic? Yes, they can be predicted with great accuracy, years in advance. If it wasn’t for weather disturbances, they would be even better. And once the perturbations of big storms and tsunamis have gone away, the predictions go back to where they were before. Tides and currents in basins were even modeled before computers.
“However, we cannot predict the tides from first principles, using the forcing and feedback method in climate models.” The forcings are well known. Are there any feedbacks? The problem with predicting tides from first principles is not the forcings, but rather the way the land masses affect the propagation of the waves of the the tides. Tsunami prediction programs deal with this, but tide prediction programs do not need to go to that bother, since predicting the future of these time series from past observations works very well.

Ferdberple Exactly
And both are completely wrong. There is nothing chaotic about tides. The harmonic decompositions that describes tides and tidal currents had been known for over 100 years which is why we are able to predict them with very high degree of accuracy. That we can not predict them by using climate models only means that tides have absolutely nothing to do with climate.

I certainly do not think the climate system is chaotic. quite the opposite. My forecasts are based on recurring quasi-periodicities – some of which can be seen in the geologic record more than 400 million years ago.

‘Say not the struggle naught availeth,
The labour and the wounds are vain,
The enemy faints not, nor faileth,
And as things have been they remain.
If hopes were dupes, fears may be liars;
It may be, in yon smoke conceal’d,
Your comrades chase e’en now the fliers,
And, but for you, possess the field.
For while the tired waves, vainly breaking,
Seem here no painful inch to gain,
Far back, through creeks and inlets making,
Comes silent, flooding in, the main.
And not by eastern windows only,
When daylight comes, comes in the light;
In front the sun climbs slow, how slowly!
But westward, look, the land is bright!’

2. This blog already has too many commenters who contribute very little to the debate. People of my ability tend to lower the tone of the discussion.
I follow WUWT at least twice every day – and also check out 7 or 8 other science blogs as well. What do I do with all the info? I write letters to newspaper editors, and frequently shove my weight around on Yahoo News comments.

No problem – but thanks for saying so. Happy New Year to you.
A little OT, but except for the folks I recognize here, I don’t know who anyone is. I’m very grateful to them and for our hosts. I am grateful for participants’ knowledge and passion and decency.
I only found this place recently in my relatively desperate effort to assure my sanity regarding all the bogus pseudoscience and blatant marketing. Since I retired about a decade ago, I’ve been traveling (It’s a wonderful world) and not paying attention to climate fiction. When I returned I was literally assailed by the info mess.
The mess did not ring with my studies in biology and engineering and so I began questing to learn what and maybe why.
Now I understand – which is a beginning. Spreading that understanding comes next and at WUWT, here we are. Finally, I hope, comes change.
Tomorrow, as a New Year’s present, I will be emailing a link to WUWT to every one of my contacts (and I have probably 2 dozen different gmail accounts (ironic thanks to Google). I have been doing web apps for many non-profits and I have a lot of contacts – including Bill M – although not hoping for much there.

A) Certain commenters are not listed who really should be. Maybe because they have moderator or author rights or perhaps just a WordPress mistake. (Janice Moore, mpainter for example).
B) richardscourtney barely commented throughout late Summer and Autumn due to illness. Have his comments been counted along with all the other Courtneys as one?

That had 1,192 comments. I remember it – it broke my script that updates my Guide to WUWT – the comma didn’t get handled in the string to integer conversion routine so I had to add another step to get rid of that.
That should make it the most commented on post of all time here.

I’m wrong about the most commented of all time, too. That remains the initial Climategate post with 1616. I guess the old theme didn’t use commas in the comment counts. Here are the posts with a thousand or more comments. My count might be off by a few, I stop scanning a post after two weeks.

What makes WUWT so appealing is that it has science wonk depth and is accessible at the same time. It serves a wide audience and does it well.
And here comes another year of climate change, which is a good thing because if climate did not change it would probably (97% confidence) mean the end of time and all existence.
Happy New Year! to WUWT and all it’s readers!

Thanks Anthony, for keeping reality in check.
Eventually, the Progressives will lose as it is a flawed philosophy. They can’t make the earth behave as they want it to.
And eventually, people will come to their senses and learn the truth of their existence.

posts per millennia? We won’t know until our 1st class tickets to Paris updated grant comes in for a new supercomputer and another rewrite of the sophisticated GCdS (Global Climate Denial Simulator) model. That’s our group’s current IPCC approved model that shows (within our best practiced and peer reviewed margin of error) that this site should get an average 6.5 views per post, per day and 2 comments per posting. This is based on USHCN cleaning up the WordPress data in accordance with acceptable climate data and measurement practices. We should be showing a nominal correlation with forward predictions falling around negative 10 views per post as well as a negative visitation rate out to 2030. Additional funding may be necessary to fully explain how a site goes negative, but CO2 dissolved in newly acidified Antarctic meltwater shows promise as the agent, and will be tested against another suite of models once we get our research vessel unstuck from the ice (again.)</sarc>

I’ve noted articles elsewhere with hundreds, some with thousands, of comments. Many of those are of the type “right mate” or “your an idiot” {spelled as I have just done}. These seem to be on posts that appear just once or twice a week and a person will make a many comments and add nothing of value. Cheapness by the dozen.
The active commenters on WUWT, and most others, do add value. I learn every day. Thanks to all of them.
While I do not have scientific contributions to make, I do usually try to be helpful by answering questions, providing links, sometimes a bit of humor, and a few criticisms.

Glad to see all of Anthony’s supporters here. It would have been nice to see a few of our Warmist friends chime in. Licking their wounds, maybe? If so, my condolences. It’s tough trying to debate without good supporting evidence.
Also, it should be mentioned that there have been well over one million reader comments, in only eight years! That metric is hard to argue with.
With so many comments under every article, the truth gets sifted from fiction pretty quickly. Both commenters and lurkers get a feel for what is credible, and what’s not. And as always, Planet Earth is the final arbiter.

Your listing of ‘237 countries in all!’ sent me on a search, as IIRC most country stats are closer to 200.
Found this.
249 Country Codes in ISO 3166-1
Many organizations use short two- or three-letter “country codes” to represent different countries or nationalities. Often, these codes are based on ISO 3166-1, a standard specification of codes published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). These codes, like us for the United States, bz for Belize, and iq for Iraq (there’s also a separate set of three-letter codes) are perhaps most famously used for internet domain names, such as http://somewebsite.jp for websites based in Japan. Based on data from the U.N., they exclude some unrecognized or partially unrecognized states, but they include pretty much everything else imaginable, from independent countries, to dependent territories, to uninhabited island territories – there’s even a code for Antarctica!
U.N. Members: 193
U.N. Observer States: 2
States With Partial Recognition: 2
Inhabited Dependent Territories: 45
Uninhabited Territories: 6
Antarctica: 1
Total: 249

So who were the ‘dozen slackers?

Congratulations all and Happy New year to all.
For me WUWT has supplanted the science magazines I quit subscribing to in disgust.
Due to the interactive nature of this blog, the quality of comment and steady posting of thought provoking stuff, I spend too much time here.
My donations are my “subscription” to the best science magazine, I have found in this new world of publishing. If we each throw in at least the annual subscription costs to those now defunct or diss-informative paper magazines, WUWT might provide Mr Watts more freedom to bring us more interesting science.
As for the quality of comment, guilty to a growing sense of “Enough Already”.The UN and The CAGW meme is getting old and needs little further explanation for me, I am afraid these activists are guilty of inciting the mob to riot, over misunderstanding the stuff of life.
Politically there is a lag between proving a meme to be rubbish and the fading away of that meme.
We are living it.
Much as I would like to kick a few of the more egregious crybabies, I can see the mob thinning and can take a longer view, the smarter of the fools and bandits who have been riding along on this bandwagon are already running for cover, testing the water of “dialogue” with sceptics and or staying silent.
I predict that WUWT readers numbers will continue to grow in 2015 and hope all will assist Anthony in this increasing load.
For as the public awareness grows, there will be many new visitors and much repetition of the older posts.
Jimbo.. That book of references is going to be needed.

Wonderful site!! I visit every day. I rarely comment, but I feel compelled to add my 2 cents today. I love the detailed science and I particularly enjoy Viscount Monckton’s regular posts (most especially the Parrot Sketch commentary about the “death of climate science”).
The only entreaty that I would add from my perspective (that seems to be shared by many), is that the principal goal of those who abuse the “climate change” meme is to establish and consolidate political power with all its attendant advantages for them. Of course, that comes with significant or severe disadvantages for the rest of us. The principal advantage (but certainly not the only one!), is the use of taxpayer dollars (ours) to consolidate power and profit. SO, their goal is not to “win” the debate, which doesn’t matter that much to them. It is simply to place enough doubt in the minds of the taxpayers (and others who are being fleeced) so that their “policies” (tyranny) can continue. So unfortunately, our task is not only to “win the debate” about the science, but it is also to reverse the political control, taxation and favoritism that is so rampant today in the western world. That really means arresting the spread of “Statism” that is so endemic in the world. A difficult goal indeed!!
However, if anyone or anything can do it, WUWT can!!

December 31, 2014 11:46 am

Congratulations Anthony, thank you so much for WUWT, and thank you to all the wonderful people who share their wisdom and news with the world every day on this site. Recent posts at WUWT by Steve Goddard made me look at the list of delegates who attended the recent COP 20 beanfest in Lima, Peru.
I was astonished to find that South Africa had no less than 80 official delegates at this 12 day talk-shop! Twelve days of meetings, plus travel time, plus some touring and shopping – beats working for a couple of weeks, doesn’t it?
WTF? From a country that has serious problems of poverty, unemployment and hunger?
For most of these jam-stealers, it was a free overseas holiday in Peru, paid for by South African taxpayers who are faced with rising energy costs and a burgeoning ‘green’ movement that has seen the local wind turbine population soar from seven to 400 in two years, with plenty more to come! And these same international tourists want to introduce a Carbon Tax here in 2016!
It is encouraging that your map shows South Africa in a somewhat bluish tint, which means that WUWT has readers in this part of the Dark Continent. I hope their numbers will grow strongly in 2015 and that they will make their voices heard to counter the state-sponsored scam that continues to foment climate alarmism in a country that can least afford to do so.
Happy New Year to the WUWT family. Especially to Willis – your posts make waves and shake minds. Please keep them coming!
Strength to all of you in 2015.

Happy New year to everyone here at WUWT. Many thanks to A-thny and all who make such fantastic contributions both in the main articles and the comments. As far as standards go, the bar has been set very high with this site. This is reflected by it’s popularity as we can see in those amazing stats.
I look forward to 2015. I think there will be some interesting breakthroughs as reality and truth are beginning to squeeze the Co2 out of CAGW like an embarrassing episode of flatulence.
Best wishes to you all.
Eamon.

There has been a lot of time and energy gone into confronting those who don’t hold to the practical truth. Keep going, ultimately the truth will prevail and be victorious.

The promise of the internet was that the barriers of entry were low and that the truth would ultimately become widely available. The reality was that was that traditional media wanted to control the message, and more troubling was that the once honorable field of Science had similar misguided intentions.
This site is a beacon of light, where free, uncensored debate is not only accepted, but also encouraged. Try that on SKS, RealClimate, HuffPo or any of the other propaganda blogs.
Many thanks to Anthony, a man of integrity, a man of honor, a man of truth.
I hope that this site will continue beyond the Climate Fear shenanigans and be an open, and honest source of information.
Happy New Year Everyone!

Thank you. If I didn’t have this blog to read, I would think I was going nuts. I have lived most of my life in the tropics and sub tropics. I watched it warm and rainfall drop from the early 70’s to late nineties, and now I’m watching the rains come back while the temperature cools. This southern winter, I was using a heavy blanket at night in the tropics! Like I said, if I didn’t read your blog I would think something is wrong with me after reading the rubbish in the mainstream media.
If the true believers really believed, they would be taking up arms, demonstrating and calling to arms. Instead they buy waterfront houses and fly round the world preaching. Deep down the “consensus” do not believe in AGW either.

Have you found the secret of underline consistency yet?

My current understanding (subject to change, but I recommend we give up) is that underline works for me in replies and <blockquote> when I am logged into my WordPress account. It doesn’t work for me in new comment threads or if I log in via FaceBook. I do have posting privileges here, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s part of the mix too. If anyone with a WP account and no privileges here would like to play, feel free to join the frustration on the test page.

Here is what I found in the “Support” for WordPress (here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/
“We believe everyone deserves fantastic support for their WordPress.com blog. At the moment, our team of Happiness Engineers** is working through a backlog of support requests. For the time being, we currently limit the contact form to customers with paid upgrades.
How about it? Could An-thony delegate that task and get us an answer via his contact form?

Hi Janice,
WUWT uses WP’s free blog, so AW has little more clout than the rest of us.
As for the happiness engineers, they probably like a little more renumeration than the satisfaction that they spread happiness, so WP probably can’t hire more unless there’s an income stream more lucrative than the advertising here.

That is, of course, up to Anthony.

Thanks Anthony and all for a very informative year, I usually lurk because I have only a little understanding of the scientific issues involved but this site explains much of the science in ways that I can understand. I’m a mainframe dinosaur programmer and the fact that most of the AGW scare is based on modelling means that the GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) factor is very high on my list of suspects!
Once again thanks to all and I wish you all the very best for the new year!

This is letter I sent to The Australian in response to an article about fats and diet etc and how the conventional wisdom has caused more problems than it solved.
Nick Cater’s article “The big fat misinformation diet” December 30, 2014 puts me in mind of another orthodoxy where researchers questioning the prevailing view are cut off from grants, publications etc”. Bob Carter comes to mind.
Global Warming misinformation has been mostly created in silico. 111 of 114 computer models (GCMs) covering the last 20 years forecast trends of + 0.21C per decade which is 4 times the observed reality. (Fyfe et al ). This misinformation is what a great many climate related news releases, forecasts and scientific papers are based on, not reality.
Let’s hope it doesn’t take 60 years to come to our senses on this one.

Hey, Sybot, your use of the powerful term “family” warmed my heart. I agree. Some of us are quiet and shy… others are bold, some are science-knowledgeable, others of us are just eager to learn. We have bossy moms and dads and fussy maiden aunts and crotchety bachelor uncles. And, LOL, we have some dysfunctional members… just like ANY normal family does, but we allies for truth of WUWT are, in a word:

Eamon!
What a kind thing to say — thank you! Quarter past eight, cute ;).
And WAY TO GO, Mr. Butler, doing your part to fight the battle for truth about nuclear power which (as you well know) IS VERY SAFE. Those obnoxious Greens are hard to take (try to just flip the channel!), but, while this is not exactly a comfort, at least know that the main force behind such foolishness about nuclear power is not deeply held, widespread, pernicious, beliefs, held by an overwhelming army of “Organic-No Nukes” Cult devotees. The few true believers out there are fuddled into shouting and marching by cool-headed (likely the coal guys, heh) non-nuclear energy promoters.
Why is this a (relatively) good thing? Money follows truth, in the long run. The money guys will, thus, abandon windmills and solar before long and go with coal. Then, they will, when coal is played out, go with nuclear. Yes, they use l1es and create economic inefficiencies with their market-share-by-Gov’t-regulation (via their cronies in political office), but, in the end, economic truth outs and they face reality and change for the better. Money guys are very pragmatic. And (listen up all you socialists (ahem)) the less Government gets involved in the economy, i.e., when truly FREE MARKETS exist, the sooner truth directs resource allocation.
So, just LAUGH at those poor Greens. No, that was wrong. Have pity and pray for them — most of them are not healthy mentally (and I am not being sarcastic).
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU, too!
May 2015 (and April and June and 😉 be for you full of joy,

May I suggest that 2014 was be the year when astute climate researchers came to the realisation that surface temperatures are controlled by thermodynamic processes (sensible convective heat transfers) as distinct from radiative heat transfer. This is the 21st century new paradigm shift I first wrote about late in 2012. Momentum is gathering as other climate blogs like The Hockey Schtick, Clive Best and Tallbloke get onto the effect of gravity, even though they have not correctly explained the energy transfer mechanisms which can be explained by the Second Law of Thermodynamics. You only have to wonder a little about how the Venus surface warms when the Sun shines to start to realise that it’s not all about radiation absorbed by the surface.
Have a happy and relaxed New Year, everyone, comforted by the now proven fact that carbon dioxide does not warm at all because valid physics shows that all it can do is cool by a minuscule amount.

Antonia
January 1, 2015 3:10 am

I don’t know if this is true or not: “Black powder (gunpowder) used in fireworks generates forty eight percent carbon dioxide. So the seven tonnes of fireworks used last night in the [Sydney] harbour generated about three and a half tonnes of carbon dioxide.” – but if it is, what hypocrites all those city-dwelling voters are.

Climate Researcher

Why? You have no valid physics which can be used to prove that carbon dioxide does anything but cool by a minuscule amount. I challenge you to produce such and explain it in your own words in detail, based on the laws of physics.

Janice Moore

Antonia is right.
Hypocrites intentionally act against their stated beliefs.
Therefore: the AGWers who enjoyed and/or willingly allowed their tax money to pay for the fireworks are hypocrites.
Hypocrisy exists in the believer whether or not the belief being violated is true.

Most people try and stay on-topic for each thread as best they can. I like that.
There was one thread (about a year ago?) calling for suggestions to make the site better. If I remember it correctly there were many comments and suggestions. I recommend that a thread of that type be an annual event.

And finally:
Solar activity in 2014 was good, SIDC (International Sunspot count) ended year just under 80 and it looks as SC24 may not be done yet.

On personal note, some 10 years ago I extrapolated the past SSN records (see formula), and came with SC24 max at ~ 80. I never expected to get that close (NASA’s Dr. Hathaway at the time was talking of 200 but about a year or two later Dr. S predicted 70, which looks good, though a bit on the low side).

Dear Herr or Frau Stein,
Take heart and fear not! Where Germany goes (power-generation policy-wise), so goes the Continent and Germany is NOT BUDGING from coal (and nuclear which will hopefully even be augmented before long).
Germany is just saying, “Nein”:
“… German … Federal Economics Minister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) has abandoned the requirement of cutting 40 percent of CO2 emissions compared to 1990 levels by 2020.” {Der Spiegel here: http://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/gabriel-beim-klimaschutz-ist-das-ziel-nicht-zu-halten-a-1003183.html}
“… Gabriel is defending vehemently coal-fired power generation.”

Dear Stein_Gral,
They most certainly do, if there is no public debate! THAT is a problem for God. Pray for liberty! (I just did)
As for their economic policies… as I said, where Germany goes, so goes Europe.
The prison-like country in which you reside can squawk all it wants, but, their imports will sit on the loading docks rotting (or rusting or what-have-you) if they price them above market due to higher costs of production (here, power). They, too, will use cheaper power, unless they are so depressed that they are suicidal… . “Cheaper power” can ONLY be coal (or hydro or natural gas), for now (given the horrendous cost that gov’t. reg. adds to nuclear power and you probably do not live where natural gas or hydropower are economically viable options — gas would be, but if it is controlled by the communists, a.k.a. Russia, then it is too unreliable a source to use for major production).
So! With an import — export imbalance such as even THEY can see they are headed for if they cling to windmills, etc…,
there will be no profits/income/sales to tax to keep their salaries going, much less, the permanently-negative-ROI-BUT-FOR-subsidies windmills .
Solar? LAUGH OUT LOUD.
Surcharges on power customers using coal-generated electricity? As if! Most of those people are getting gov’t. handouts to pay their power bills!
And all the OPM ran out…… 5 seconds ago (printing more Monopoly money doesn’t work in the long run… the guys who bought all the railroads and Boardwalk and stuff end up winning… rent, you know, heh). bbbbwwwwwwwweeeeeeppp!…rrrrrrrmmmmm…………………………
*!*!*!GAME OVER*!*!*!
Coal power is here to stay… until nuclear takes over.
Rejoice!

There has even been a mention of Nuclear, here in Ireland. At least, the minister has called for a debate on our future energy sources, and said it was not for him to advocate Nuclear or any other
form of energy, but he didn’t want to exclude any particular source. The Greens are mad with him. Their spokesman was almost in tears saying,” it’s extremely costly, it’s risky and it’s not realistic.” Though, I was disappointed with the guy promoting Nuclear. He said that the impacts of fossil fuels were catastrophic and growing.
Ok, it’s a start. I wish I had the confidence and technical knowledge to take these guys on, as it is becoming more prevalent on local T.V. I have made lots of representation of the Skeptical view, by Email, but their response has been very lacking.
