Tim Blair writes in his column, Monday, October 27, 2014 about yet another climate prediction by a government scientist that seems sure to fail. You can add it to the list of failed predictions, such as Al Gore’s Arctic ice cap disappearing trick that never happened.
Doomsday draws near:
The planet has just five years to avoid disastrous global warming, says the Federal Government’s chief scientist.
Prof Penny Sackett yesterday urged all Australians to reduce their carbon footprint.
Sackett – now the former chief scientist – issued her five-year warning four years, 10 months and 24 days ago. Meanwhile, previous claims that global warming would cause hotter European winters may now be disregarded, because global warming has decided to make things colder instead:
The risk of severe winters in Europe and northern Asia has been doubled by global warming, according to new research.
The science is unsettled, as usual.

Then we might as well just relax from here on out, as it is now too late to do anything to avoid the coming disaster. Since the climate-change pseudo-science says that global warming will now bring us colder winters, we can spend the money that has been wasted on “climate change” research on mitigating the coming cooling. We’re going to need more energy resources. Approve the Keystone pipeline, build more coal-fired generating plants, approve drilling leases, build new-generation nuclear plants and get rid of most of the EPA.

Not quite right with the headline there.
He comment was to say that unless by 2015 we do not reduce our CO2 generation, then warming caused by the rise will be significant in the future. Just because you stop adding to the atmosphere does not mean that the CO2 already there will suddenly disappear. It will continue to add to global heat for many years.
There is no verbatim quote of disaster in climate in 2015 at all in your linked news paper clip. There is simply a headline written by a journalist – not the most reliable source.

You must be terribly scared right now then. What does it take for you people! Over half your life there has been no warming. Do you say the same thing about Al Gore’s no ice on the Arctic Ocean, Dr. Viner’s ‘..children won’t know what snow is? (Since they’ve been buried by snow, they’ve switched it to ‘Global warming is going to freeze us to death’). Actually, I’m not being facetious when I ask you- what will it take? I’d like to know.

well, since there has been no warming for 17 years now, I would be willing to bet that there is only 1 year of his life in which he has ever experienced any warming. And maybe that estimate is on the high side.

Why did anyone listen to what this good Professor Sackett has to say? She was obviously not very good at her job and no one really took her seriously. A complete and utter failure at her former job who spends too much time looking at Uranus.
Professor Penny Sackett had briefed former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd only once during his tenure and had never briefed Ms Gillard. Judging by this post I’d say Professor Sackett has been debriefed as in the emperors new clothes. Her reign has been laid bare for all to see.

Andrew, half of what humans emit remains in the atmosphere (as mass, not the original molecules), the other halve is distributed between plants, surface and deep oceans.
Which doesn’t say that if our emissions stopped, that would sit in the atmosphere for the next thousands of years, as the IPCC thinks: the current half life of the excess CO2 above equilibrium is ~40 years and there are no signs that the deep oceans or vegetation are saturated…
Thus the 110+ ppmv extra would be 55 ppmv after 40 years, 27,5 ppmv after 80 years, etc.
For years the warming crowd sold its position to the public by comparing warming curves with CO2 curves. Now they’re saying that’s not the way it works??? In my experience, and that’s a lot of years, that change in rhetoric is a evidence of an exponential rise in the BS curve.

That mostly that the main portion only hangs around for 3 or 4 years.
Plants really like it and do well when there is more in the atmosphere.
Still it depends what is meant by a really long time.
For a mouse that is a life time.
About 20% of all CO2 in the atmosphere is exchanged over the seasons with other reservoirs (oceans and vegetation). That gives a “residence time” of slightly over 5 years for any individual CO2 molecule, whatever its source.
But that is only exchange: what goes in goes out at approximately the same quantities. It is the difference between ins and outs which makes the gain or loss of CO2 in the atmosphere. And that is a lot less: the current difference is a net loss of ~4.5 (~2 ppmv) CO2/year under the direct pressure of ~230 GtC (~110 ppmv) extra CO2 in the atmosphere. That gives an e-fold time of over 50 years or a half life time of ~40 years.
Two different half lives: the first is about the throughput, the second is about the gain (or loss)…

The Guardian is so underhanded. In that link (article published yesterday) they have used an Arctic sea ice graph from NOAA that stops in mid September, nearly six weeks ago. This date just happens to be the date of the minimum when the curve started turning back upwards. But as they have it depicted (the day before the upturn) it is still careering downwards at a steep angle. I just checked Anthony’s sea ice page and sure enough, there is an up-to-date version of the graph that the Guardian could have used. What’s more, this updated version clearly shows the upturn as being mid-September, immediately after the Guardian’s cherry picked date.
I suspect this means that someone at the Guardian was assiduously archiving the NOAA sea ice graphs every day around the minimum and then filed away this depressing-looking one for future use.
Just more misdirection by the MSM. Nothing new to see there.

This became particularly common prior to the Copenhagen Summit. Before that summit, political leaders such as Gordon Brown would say we have only only 50 days to save the planet from runaway climate change.
Those 50 days expired several years ago, so it’s too late now to stop runaway climate change.
Of course, these politicians and climate scientists could be telling deliberate untruths. That is not likely because these same politicians and climate scientists are so quick to question the integrity of their opponents, often with little evidence. You can only be so quick off the mark. A few years ago, Al Gore published a video in which he and a “science guy” tried to do this with a 5 gallon glass jar, infrared lamp and a thermometer. For a number of reasons, this didn’t work, so they resorted to cheating to get the desired results. (Note: as I recall, this was positioned as an instruction video for high school science students, who were encouraged to replicate the experiment).
Gore’s corollary to CAGW theory: just because your experiment failed does not mean you can’t plug in the pre-determined expected results.
I was going to wish out loud that they always include the standard “past performance is no guarantee of future results,” but it’s past non-performance and it is a guarantee that they’re still wrong.
So … in 37 days, disastrous global warming becomes unavoidable. Why is this called “Climate Doomsday”?
If disastrous global warming becomes unavoidable 37 days from now, then all of those tired leftist policies they’ve been trying to pass by dressing them up as global warming prevention will become unjustified. There is no point in having a policy to avoid that which is unavoidable.

She made that prediction before they knew that atmospheric heat had the ability escape into the deep oceans without so much as a by-your-leave, or of anyone even noticing. I don’t think any fossil has ever been used as a fuel. I am just a lawyer but my recollection of grade school science is that fossils are formed when organic matter turns to stone. What we use as fuel I think is more accurately called organic solar batteries.

Climate science is such a great racket. Make predictions that are 5 – 10 years out. That guarantees you employment, money, and prestige. Such short-term predictions like “in 5 years” were bound to easy falsification and embarrassment to the doomsayer’s reputation.
Because of that now obvious problem for the Alarmists, the IPCC is now using 2050 as the date for all things CO2 related climate catastrophes. By then the doomsayers will either be dead or forgotten when the predictions fail to come true.
Using 2050 as a catastrophe date also has the possible advantage of having the PDO and AMO cycles on the upswing.
Make no mistake, the Progressives now see this as a multi-generational battle for control of the people. They are altering the education systems to brainwash our children into accepting whatever fabrications the environmentalists put forward. In the US we see it in Common Core, and even their attempts to indoctrinate Girl Scouts into Climate Alarmism.

This is consistent with a marketing scheme to sell something quickly to a person or people. That can work well if:
1.They are selling based on an authentic representation of the product and/or
2. Their sales pitch is so convincing, that it causes the person or people they are are targeting, to buy immediately(fall for it)
With CAGW, #2 has been getting all the weight. The strategy has been to exaggerate and scare those that they are selling the idea/product to.
The problem has been 2 fold for them. First, #2 was pretty darn effective and has had good success in many realms but there was enough resistance from those that understood science enough to see that #1 was not being met and that their resources were focused on #2, at any cost that it obstructed the mission of #2 from being fully implemented.
The biggest problem now is that they are on record with exaggerated projections about the future and as the future always unfolds with time it alone determines authenticity.
But all is not lost. #3 has entered the picture.
3. Move the goal posts and create a reality/world in which extreme weather is actually happening all around us right now, just as predicted. Every abnormality in the world offers a new opportunity to provide a climate change causation spin. Now, even the increase of extreme cold is caused by greenhouse gas warming. The spread of Ebola………there is almost nothing that can’t be blamed on climate change.

We should really have a comprehensive overview of all the predictions of doom made by climate scientists, politicians and media, as a reference page, so that we could confront them with all their failed warnings. As it is now, we see that they are trying to slip away from their responsibilities, hoping to get away by means of the public’s utter exhaustion with climate matters.
We need to have a documentation of their wayward warnings, and this could be a data base which was fed by readers in all countries.
Thank you, I so needed a good laugh! Who needs comedy TV when we’ve got climate alarmists?

So is the predictor Penny Sackett preparing her scientifically professional apology for her naïve misapplication of reasoning about climate focused science?
What is her ‘belief’ now? Does she insist we now have certain doom in the future based on the past 4 years of fossil fuel use? Or will she now hedge and say we have another 4 years to do something or have certain future doom?
Penny Sackett, where are you now? Please finish the story. Tell us the actual outcome versus the prediction you believed in.

There is an article from 2006 in Media Matters that said Al Gore’s quote in Grist magazine from that year of
it is “appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous it [global warming] is, as a predicate for opening up the audience to listen to what the solutions are.”
The writer of the article denied this was advocating exaggeration of scientific facts, saying this:
In fact, as the website News Hounds noted, Gore’s use of the term “over-representation” referred to the amount of time spent informing people about the dangers posed by global warming (at the expense of discussing possible solutions to the problem); it did not amount to an endorsement of exaggerating those dangers.
All I can say to that is bullshot!

Who has more plausible integrity: (a) the author of the Homer Simpson comic; or (b) the politically / publically paid Penny Sackett, the professional scientist who alarmingly predicted doom that cannot be observed?

Decades and centuries ago it must have been warmer globally then because there were colder winters. The risk of severe winters occurred more frequently back then in Europe. (Who would have thought, or that’s right the problem is they don’t)
Since the 1960’s I’ve been waiting the “big one” San Andreas earthquake in Southern California that is “going to happen within the next 30 years”, said every few years since 1960.

Winter is coming.
The science is always settled – it’s just that the nature of the settlement changes from time to time. It’s like serial monogamists are always faithful to their woman, until they dump them to become faithful to another one.
We should shame these people by sending them anniversary cards. Each one a countown to 0 then going back up again.
The end is near, has nothing to do with climate change though….you will know the season.

Well good that it’s over and we can now be certain of warming.
It’s at the same time too bad that here in Germany warming manifests as cooling (as proven by climate scientists global warming models), and I still have to have winter tires.
The deeply worrying part is Professor Sackett was one of seven women chosen by the Office of the Status of Women to act as an ambassador to promote science to secondary school students.
She is also “a vocal champion of evidenced-based decision making” and is currently an Adjunct Professor at the ANU with her own consultancy enterprise providing “strategic foresight”.
Mmmmn, what was that phrase that Tony Curtis quoted in the beginning of The Great Imposter?

Now for the long range forecast.
There’s a broad front of CO2 related catastrophe failures about to sweep down from the Arctic, resulting in a pronounced wane fail of policy across North America and Europe. Like the ones recently experienced in Canada, Russia, China and elsewhere. At the same time we’re expecting an increase in the political temperature in the USA and Europe and an increased brief incidence of climate policy related snow jobs. Rotten tomatoes may well become prevalent as ‘experts’ find themselves ever more publicly pilloried, and roads could become slippery as panicking politicians throw ‘climate scientists’ and activists under buses. Winter tyres are recommended.
A flood of long term sceptical opinion is expected to swamp the mainstream, resulting in a major subsidence of climate related funding. Small grant warnings are to be expected in warming related academia.
Only 36 more days and Australia is ahead on time + another hour lost on daylight savings! Not much time to prepare for the Apocalypse. Better build those retaining walls to keep the rising seas at bay. They will be lapping at my door in days, despite being 60 metres above sea level. Better have those emergency food supplies ready too and protection from the searing temperatures. Now where is that really strong umbrella-the sky is falling.

This unexpected “change” in the climate from a heat death spiral of 5 years ago to a cooling trend is firm and absolute confirmation of the theory of “Climate Change”.

What a silly world we live in. Don’t like the weather? Blame it on your neighbor’s truck and then run for cover. It’s a wonder watermelons ever walk out their front door out of fear a sunbeam, raindrop, snowflake, or blowing leaf would threaten to strike them down.
Call me a cynic (please!), but I believe even watermelons don’t believe this CO2 crap…it’s simply the tax-scam du jour.
They believe it. I asked some. They simply accept anything that is in the science section of their favorite newspaper.
When you ask them what the most important greenhouse gas is though, they smell a trick question, think hard… and think…and think.
Because their favorite newspaper never told them.
It is the pride of the intellectual to believe everything that a science journalist says, and never question it.
Trouble is… the average science journalist knows nothing about science. They would not embarrass themselves writing the global warming rubbish if they did. Most of them end up writing about science because they are too geeky to understand sport and too left wing even to write anything slightly impartial about politics. They went to university and studied Journalism, NOT science.
Every single person reading this must do their part and send a copy/link to at least one other person.
I have decided that it is time to take those alarmist scientists seriously and finally bow to their scientific superiority and accept that they are right. We should take heed of their predictions from over a decade ago that we were months away from a tipping point, we passed it and it is too late to prevent the massive increase in global warming that must be presenting itself in stealth mode, by sneakily keeping global temperatures flat. It’s to late to stop it, so I am not going to bother trying.
No, you can’t convince me, after all, these are the best scientists in the world and they are all agreed and the science is settled. To suggest that I try to change things is to suggest that those eminent world class scientists are….. wrong!!! That would never do. It is now far to late to make any difference, so I am going to buy an SUV, turn my heating up full and enjoy the coming winter as it will probably be my last before I have to escape to a tropical Arctic island somewhere…. After all the scientists are not wrong…. are they? Or….. if they are, why should we listen to them at all?
