'Climate change created ISIS' is now #49 on the 'official list' of things supposedly caused by global warming

climate_excuse_for_everything

Jeff Dunetz aka The ‘YidWithLid’ writes:

Latest Climate Idiocy: Global Warming Created ISIS

In recent weeks the Obama administration has blamed President Bush and/or the intelligence community for the creation of ISIS, others have blamed President Obama and his reluctance to get involved in another Middle East conflict, but apparently both positions are wrong. According to a recent article in the Huffington Post, the reason why ISIS was able to form and grow so fast was global warming (note: do not check your calendar it’s September not April fools day they really believe this).

The authors of the piece; Charles B. Strozier Professor of History, The City University of New York; and Kelly A. Berkell Attorney and research associate, Center on Terrorism at John Jay College of Criminal Justice believe that ISIS formed because of a severe drought in Syria from 2006-2010 and that drought happened because of—you guessed it—Climate Change.

As the Obama administration undertakes a highly public, multilateral campaign to degrade and destroy the militant jihadists known as ISIS, ISIL and the Islamic State, many in the West remain unaware that climate played a significant role in the rise of Syria’s extremists. A historic drought afflicted the country from 2006 through 2010, setting off a dire humanitarian crisis for millions of Syrians. Yet the four-year drought evoked little response from Bashar al-Assad’s government. Rage at the regime’s callousness boiled over in 2011, helping to fuel the popular uprising. In the ensuing chaos, ISIS stole onto the scene, proclaimed a caliphate in late June and accelerated its rampage of atrocities including the recent beheadings of three Western civilians.

While ISIS threatens brutal violence against all who dissent from its harsh ideology, climate change menaces communities (less maliciously) with increasingly extreme weather.

The drought that preceded the current conflict in Syria fits into a pattern of increased dryness in the Mediterranean and Middle East, for which scientists hold climate change partly responsible. Affecting 60 percent of Syria’s land, drought ravaged the country’s northeastern breadbasket region; devastated the livelihoods of 800,000 farmers and herders; and knocked two to three million people into extreme poverty. Many became climate refugees, abandoning their homes and migrating to already overcrowded cities. They forged temporary settlements on the outskirts of areas like Aleppo, Damascus, Hama and Homs. Some of the displaced settled in Daraa, where protests in early 2011 fanned out and eventually ignited a full-fledged war.

Although I am not a climate scientist (actually neither are the authors) it is easy to strike down their theory, both from a political and a scientific point of view:

  • ISIS did not form in Syria it formed in Iraq. In fact one of the reasons each party has been able to blame the other for the rise of the terrorist group is that ISIS used to be al Qaeda in Iraq. They were thrown out of the Bin Laden group because the ISIS leaders did not play nice with the al Qaeda leaders.
  • Perhaps the single most important factor in ISIS’ recent resurgence is the conflict between Iraqi Shias and Iraqi Sunnis. ISIS fighters themselves are Sunnis, and the tension between the two groups is a powerful recruiting tool for ISIS. The Shia government of Iraq refused to share power with the Sunnis (who held power under Saddam Hussein). The Shia/Sunni fight began as a fight over who got to take power after the Prophet Muhammad’s death and has been going on for almost 1400 years–way before ISIS.
  • Most observers believe ISIS was able to grow because American troops pulled out of Iraq too early and didn’t help out in Syria until it was too late.  Unless the drought happened in Washington DC, it couldn’t have had any influence on the President’s decision.
  • Droughts? science that states there has been no increase in droughts world-wide. In other words if you believe the world is going to hell in a hand basket due to global warming, that climate change is not increasing the number of droughts in in the world.

“It is misleading and just plain incorrect to claim that disasters associated with hurricanes, tornadoes, floods or droughts have increased on climate timescales either in the United States or globally,” Professor Roger Pielke Jr. said in his testimony before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

In May of 2014 Professor Pielke  published a graph that shows the intensity of the planet’s droughts from 1982 to 2012. The graph shows that neither droughts nor their intensity have seen a growth trend during that 30-year period.

  • It’s not getting warmer. Its incredible that almost every day the global warming hoaxers come up with another example of how the earth is being destroyed due to their hypothesis like the one being explored here. The truth is as of Sept. 1 the Earth hasn’t warmed in the last 17 years and 11 months (new numbers, through October 1will be out in a few days). Another way to look at it is the warming stopped approximately ten years before the drought in Syria…making it difficult for there to be a connection.

It is interesting that the authors contend “ISIS threatens brutal violence against all who dissent from its harsh ideology” which is true, ISIS not only threaten violence but they follow through with their threats. Also true is that the climate change proponents threaten violence. Thankfully they do not follow through with it, but they do attack people who question their unproven hypothesis as science haters and deniers of truth. Perhaps if they examined the facts instead of desperately trying to prove their hypothesis true climate change enthusiasts would realize the holes in their arguments.

Climate change helping to create ISIS is now #49 on the “official list,” of stupid things global warming enthusiasts have blamed on their failed theory:

Read his list of 49 “stupid things” here:

President Selfie and stooges throughout his administration think Climate Change is the biggest threat we face. They say that today’s high school graduates are the first generation that will feel the impacts of Climate Change, and the last generation that can fix it. They neglect to mention that today’s high school graduates have not experienced “global warming” at any point in their entire lives.

Obama admitted to having underestimated the threat posed by ISIS. If Climate Change created ISIS, that means Obama also underestimated the threat posed by Climate Change. Let’s hope that he will soon correct this mistake.

The main adaptation/correction needed is to subsidize crop farmers with enough money to build much bigger bins and storage capacity for the record breaking crops.

Crop Production
REleased September 11, 2014, by the National Agricultural Statistics Service
(NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, United States Department of
Agriculture (USDA).
“Corn production is forecast at 14.4 billion bushels, up 3 percent from both
the August forecast and from 2013. Based on conditions as of September 1,
yields are expected to average 171.7 bushels per acre, up 4.3 bushels from
the August forecast and 12.9 bushels above the 2013 average. If realized,
this will be the highest yield and production on record for the United
States.
Soybean production is forecast at a record 3.91 billion bushels, up 3 percent
from August and up 19 percent from last year. Based on September 1
conditions, yields are expected to average a record high 46.6 bushels per

It is not a matter of incompetence with Obama. Everything Obama does has a planned hidden long term agenda. Obama’s plan was for ISIS to rise in power. Obama’s attack on Libya was to destabilize and foster radicals.
Obama’s push of Global Warming and Climate Change has nothing to do with CO2 or environment. Obama’s goal is weaken American by starving America for energy, drive up prices for everything involving energy, and have an excuse to redistribute America’s money to foreign powers, some being our enemies.
BTW: Obama goes golfing so he appears incompetent, rather than be seen for the knowing and plotting Traitor he is. With side benefit of tweaking the noses of those that oppose him.

Actually, he said that the Intelligence community underestimated the threat posed by ISIS. And now it comes out that he has missed 60% of his daily intelligence briefings (but 0% of his golf outings).

I would recommend reading the Agenda 21 itself with an open mind, as opposed to reading and listening to the misleading biased crap that’s spewed on those sites you mentioned.
The agenda proposes that we create a system of working together to help save our species from wallowing in it’s own feces. Drought is occurring, and people are dying from pollution. If we keep it up, you won’t leave anything worth giving to your grand kids or their grandchildren.
Americans and politicians are too greedy to enable Agenda 21. If you’ll research a little further, you’ll find most of our politicians don’t support it, as it takes away profits from major businesses. And as for regular Americans, it means giving up your laziness that is destroying the beautiful things in this world. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of people in a lot of countries are lazy bigoted douche bags. They aren’t helping either. Reading misleading bull like this article and the two you mentioned are part of the problem. Do your own research, these ‘authors’ aren’t helping you out, nor are they any more intelligent.

Now you have me thinking.
The fall of the Western Roman Empire was caused, in part, by a major depopulation brought on by the Antonine Plague and a sudden climate shift resulting in people abandoning land (laws regarding agri deserti sprang up to address this problem); and by yet another sudden cooling in the north of Europe forcing the Huns further south, across the previously agreed upon northern frontier (the Huns was also being pushed out of their lands by presumably Oriental foes).
So, in effect, the Western Roman Empire fell due to climate change: the Huns were climate refugees of their day; the incursion into the climate-induced depopulated Empire further destabilized it.
Thus, we can show that Climate Change caused the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

Odd that the Syrian drought from 1958 to 1961 should have caused all those problems without climate change. As for the 300 year whopper drought from 2200 BC…no climate change?

Netanyahu is an idiot. The BS he spouts gets past the BS-detectors of Americans because they are ignorant of any other culture except their own, and Netanyahu preys on that ignorance with his American-sounding accent.
Colonel Pat Lang taught “Islamic Religion and Arab Culture” to US soldiers at the United States Military Academy, US Army War College, and other places. He re-posted his powerpoint Islam talk last week because he said he was asked to re-post it. Lang has zero patience with people who fail to do their homework when discussing the Middle East, and who lump all Muslims and versions of Islam together. His military intelligence work in the Middle East and Southeast Asia is too extensive to quote here, but here he is in wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Patrick_Lang

Netanyahu is not an idiot. His quote was very clear; “The militant Islamists believe in a master faith,” he said…
The term Islamist refers to old school sharia law convert or die Muslims, who happen to be very common in the Middle East, and active in nations around the world. My wife worked with some Muslim women in San Diego. They were afraid to go to the Mosques in San Diego, as they were controlled by Islamists. The moderates in Islam have little power in most Islamic nations. Many moderate Muslims have been exiled from nations like Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Polls taken on Arabic nations support of Jihad and terrorism often return with well above 50% positive outlook. The Arab forces aligned against Israel have ever vowed the destruction of Israel, and continue to teach their children to hate. Netanyahu is not an idiot.

Hmmmm,,,,if I recall correctly Netanyahu is such an idiot he went to MIT. “At MIT, Netanyahu graduated near the top of his class, and was recruited as a management consultant for the Boston Consulting Group in Boston,….” Sort of makes the person calling him dumb look dim. And as for Americans being ignorant of any culture but their own, Americans live in the most internationally diverse society in the world. Literally many tens of thousands of Americans live overseas working, teaching, studying and traveling on any given day. Repeating the old ignorant American line makes you look dumb. And over simplifying Islamic culture with a simplistic view of the Shia/Sunni division ignore history where the two groups have cooperated in the face of a uniting opportunity.

I think Mr. Green was referring to Iraq; which was far more stable then, something Obama, who had nothing to do with the success to that point, bragged extensively about a few years back, while he ignored his intelligence meetings, canceling them, saying he would read them, when he clearly did not, claimed surprise when it turned out that the Islamists were not just a “small band of men”, then threw his intelligence adviser under the bus.
As to the financial crisis; well in the view of many, both parties were responsible, with the democrats having primary responsibility through their control of the Senate Finance committee and their control over GSE’s Fannie and Freddie, and their banking legislation.

“It’s not getting warmer. Its incredible that almost every day the global warming hoaxers come up with another example of how the earth is being destroyed due to their hypothesis like the one being explored here.”
A hoaxer is “one who attempts to trick [others] into believing or accepting as genuine something false and often preposterous”. Allen Sokal’s paper, “Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity” was a hoax. The Cardiff Man was a hoax. The Piltdown Man was a hoax. Charles Redheffer’s Perpetual Motion Machine was a hoax.
However, there are no “global warming hoaxers” — there are those who disagree with you about climate science, there are those who disagree with you about climate policy, there are some who should be disinterested scientists but are activists instead, there are a lot of people mixing science and politics, there is a lot of sloppy science being done based on unsupportable climate “models of the future” — but there are no “global warming hoaxers”.
To accuse Charles B. Strozier Professor of History, The City University of New York; and Kelly A. Berkell Attorney and research associate, Center on Terrorism at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, of being “global warming hoaxers” is rank Name Calling .. and is forbidden by the policy of this web site. Wouldn’t someone who supports a known hoax become a hoaxer?
Stupid and dumb are not just names for someone with a low IQ. They also describe those with high IQ who make unwise decisions (thus the phrase “don’t be stupid”), such as joining a group of hoaxers.

I also would like to know if these are the standards with which we are debating here now ? If there is a “don’t hurt my wittle feewings rule” which justifies this kind of inappropriate response from the moderators here it should have been made clearer from the start.
The moderator in this case is being manipulated by Kip Hansen to “moderate” a discussion away from a direction that he didn’t like by making hyperbolic accusations and then putting the host ON THE DEFENSIVE (yes, a sal Alinsky-like tactic) by implying a lowering of standards in the venue in order to garner an inappropriate apology and shut down dissenting opinions.
It’s disappointing to see how easily this was accomplished. Like mpainter, I too, “wonder about this guy.”

Get off of your high-horse Kip and stop making false statements. There was no name calling; nobody called anybody else names. As far as referring to the AGW science as a hoax, Dr. Tim Ball uses that word much and I think he is right. So don’t censor or lecture us about the way that we characterize the junk science of the global warmers. Where have you been, anyway?

Kip,
I must admit that I missed that particular essay (not that I have read the entire WUWT content either) but I must agree with you on many if not most of the points made within it. With the one exception being this paragraph
“The word “denialists” is offensive in its connotation, intended or not, of Holocaust denialism, and is, in any case, incorrect, no one (“nutters” excepted), denies “climate” or that climate changes. Later in his speech, he uses a better word which I will suggest here for all of us, if we must separate people with a binary system denoting disagreement with IPCC climate change science consensus: climate change consensus DISSENT and DISSENTERS.”
To Define DISSENT :
1. To differ in sentiment or opinion, especially from the majority; withhold assent; disagree (often followed by from): “Two of the justices dissented from the majority decision.”
According to the Primary Definition, To Dissent is to differ from the MAJORITY sentiment or opinion. I am uncertain that the Pro AGW croud is the majority although the media portrays them as the Vocal Majority.
Concensus had a name in the press and thereby the public perception at large long before it had an associated number. It wasn’t until after the COOK paper that the Concensus was termed 97% implying a vast agreement among an extreme number of scientists (that doesn’t really exist)
Numerous essays have appeared on WUWT about this concensus http://wattsupwiththat.com/?s=97%25
An excerpt from one of those essays
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/09/20/join-my-crowd-sourced-complaint-about-97-1-consensus/
“Mr. Nuccitelli, one of the authors of the Cook paper, has written a posting on the “Skeptical Science” blog in which he sought to justify the discrepancy between the 0.5% of abstracts that Legates et al. had shown the Cook paper had assigned to the “explicit endorsement with quantification” category and the “97.1% based on abstract ratings” that the conclusion of the Cook paper had claimed endorsed the “scientific consensus” as defined:
“The IPCC position (humans causing most global warming) was represented in our categories 1 and 7, which include papers that explicitly endorse or reject/minimize human-caused global warming, and also quantify the human contribution. Among the relatively few abstracts (75 in total) falling in these two categories, 65 (87%) endorsed the consensus view.”
From this series of admissions, it is evident that the authors of the Cook paper are now claiming 87% (not 97.1%) “scientific consensus” – but that they are doing so on the basis of a sample size that has shrunk from 11,944 to just 75 papers, arbitrarily and improperly eliminating 99.4% of the papers in the original sample. No scientific survey or opinion poll with a sample size of less than 1000 would normally be regarded as statistically significant.”
Such a small sampling of almost 11,944 papers with the exclusion of 11,869 gave the appearance of an overwhelming concensus so I am uncertain as to the actual level of concensus.
I think that a better word than Dissent/Dissenters is the simple Climate Skeptic or Climate Realist

Reply to hunter ==> They may well be getting grants to do studies by using the availability of grant money for global warming issues as a tool. That said, you’d have to ask them to find out.
Homeland Security considers AGW/CC as a security risk based on the type of thinking represented by this paper — drought, famine, crop failure might lead to civil unrest and revolution in some parts of the world.
One of the current problems of the whole field of Climate Change is that grant money is tied to “finding” these types of connections,
They are connected to the John Jay Center on Terrorism — so this idea from them is no surprise.
Is it correct? Don’t think so, but not my area of expertise.

I was in Erbil, Kurdistan Region, Northern Iraq during the 2011-2012 time frame as a contractor. After the final withdrawal of US troops on 18 Dec 11, AQI began to contest control of Iraq with the Iraqi government, primarily from Mosul, and at every level: attacks on roadblocks and security forces, assassinations, sectarian car-bombings…all financed through kidnappings and shake-down operations.Violence spread from Mosul throughout the Arab provinces, and Ramadan 2012 was a particularly violent month throughout the country.
The Syrian Civil War was a long time in coming, but was sparked by the Arab Spring and was initially a (relatively) secular event. Resentment of Assad, a stagnant economy, the Baathists and the Alawite domination had more to do with the growth of the opposition in Syria than the weather, which is, well, hot and dry most of the time. But most of the jihadis were relative late-comers to the chaos in Syria. In the spring and summer of 2012, AQI jihadis began to head to Syria to take part in the nascent anti-Assad campaign. AQI formed the nucleus of the main jihadi opposition, which evolved into ISIS, and as the governments had no positive control of the border, jihadis moved back and forth between Iraq and Syria at will. Couple that with gross sectarianism and incompetence from Baghdad and you have set the conditions for the Islamic State.
Other than the obvious, desert heat and no A/C can make someone pretty irritable, I can’t see that climate was a factor.

not sure formation is that cut and dried.
Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) was active in syria at same time it was active in iraq.
while the originating group (Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad) was first in iraq it actually gained strength faster in syria due to the syrian civil war (as compared to amount of “members” in iraq) then the syria group and iraq groups joined up into one large cell.
In Jan 2014 the syrian group was getting $$ due to oil deals with syrian government, this allowed them to fester and grow htere until they had the strength to explode in iraq and combine forces.
and climate change had nothing to to do with it.
CO2…what can’t it do…..a real jihadigas…

The climate has been unstable and changing ever since the days of Noah / Gilgamesh / the Younger Dryas / the Hadean Age (depending on your preferred version of history).
What is important to the enviros is whether you can blame it on everybody who has more more money than political clout – and justify taxing them back into the Stone Age thereby.

A 200-year-long drought 4,200 years ago may have killed off the ancient Sumerian language, one geologist says.
Because no written accounts explicitly mention drought as the reason for the Sumerian demise, the conclusions rely on indirect clues. But several pieces of archaeological and geological evidence tie the gradual decline of the Sumerian civilization to a drought.

Can we please stop playing into the mythology by investing the two words ‘climate change’ with mystical meaning greater than the sum of their parts? I doubt there are many on here who would dispute that climate changes, and what is a “drought” or “pattern of increased dryness” but climate change? It’s a truism. Hence we can distill the above-quoted sentence “The drought that preceded the current conflict in Syria fits into a pattern of increased dryness in the Mediterranean and Middle East, for which scientists hold climate change partly responsible” to read “a change in the climate has occurred, for which scientists hold climate change partly responsible” and reveal the grasping logic employed.

What changed me from being mildly sceptical to much more sceptical of the claims of global warning was when the Indonesian earthquake and tsunami 10 years ago, given no repudiation of the claim in the media or so-called experts. Even if the oceans were to instantly begin to boil, any idea how long it would take for that heat signature to reach the depth of that earthquake! I guess the idea was “don’t waste a good crisis!”
Unfortunately, the scientific process is being prostituted because of the alliance of politcs, money and crisis peddeling and this is not just in climate science.
So sad.

But but but….
COLD leads to drought in the Levant, Egypt, Syria, Babylon, etc… There are a load of archeological references. Just one such:
http://www.sott.net/article/267972-Drought-triggered-collapse-of-civilization-in-Levant-more-than-3000-years-ago
The specimens, taken from evidence dating back over the past 9,000 years in some cases, revealed a significant decline in Mediterranean trees such as oaks, pines and carobs during the Late Bronze Age. This was mirrored in a similar decline in the local cultivation of olive trees. The researchers attribute these patterns to repeated periods of drought, which were probably made worse by cold weather, triggering famine and marauding throughout the region.
Same thing at the collapse of the Egyptian Old Kingdom…
So if there’s drought in the Levant, look for cold as the cause (maybe that snow we had in the last couple of years…. )

We are sending good men and women into areas, like Afg or Iraq, when the crime is being financed from real centres of control and finance.
The ordinary folk in those places are ignorant however and cannot survive on their barren wastelands.

There were general protests that took place in Iran sometime following the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq (and, amazingly, following a request for a similar action against Iran by none other than a descendant of the Ayatollah Khomeini himself), and protests in Beirut, Lebanon following the assassination of Rafik Hariri, but also encouraged by the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Neither of these protests, however, went on to the next stage. How then, did the general discontent in Libya and Syria boil into armed insurrections when the same did not happen in Teheran and Beirut? Could it be because the former was supported and, most importantly, armed whereas the latter were not? So who got the ball rolling? Who armed them? What was the plan behind the Arab Spring all along? In fact, who popularized that most appealing name? – Arab Spring. I think those are more pertinent questions for an historian to ask rather than to make blather on climate change. But, perhaps they’re not more profitable questions.

ISIS did not form in Syria it formed in Iraq. In fact one of the reasons each party has been able to blame the other for the rise of the terrorist group is that ISIS used to be al Qaeda in Iraq. They were thrown out of the Bin Laden group because the ISIS leaders did not play nice with the al Qaeda leaders.

U.S. Says Insurgent Leader It Couldn’t Find Never Was

For more than a year, the leader of one the most notorious insurgent groups in Iraq was said to be a mysterious Iraqi called Abu Omar al-Baghdadi.
As the titular head of the Islamic State in Iraq, Mr. Baghdadi issued incendiary pronouncements. Despite claims by an Iraqi Interior Ministry official in May that Mr. Baghdadi had been killed, he appeared to have persevered unscathed.
On Wednesday, the chief United States military spokesman here, Brig. Gen. Kevin J. Bergner, provided a new explanation for Mr. Baghdadi’s ability to escape attack: he never existed.

I would clarify the creative process a bit.
Climate change (grant chasing) created (this historical fiction) about what formed ISIS.
“Rent seeking” is a great term to describe how the professional academic industry stretches and morphs their work to make it more likely they receive money by way of foundation or government grants.
A definition of rent seeking:
“The practice of an individual, company, or government attempting to make a profit without making a product, producing wealth, or otherwise contributing to society. For example, a company may seek subsidies from the government, which would count as income for that company. Likewise, a government may seek rent by seizing control of natural resources and charging citizens for use. Some rent seeking is legal, while others, such as some forms of blackmail, are not. Rent-seeking behavior is most common when the rent seeker is also a monopoly or has sufficient economic or political power to act as one. The concept was originated by Adam Smith.
Farlex Financial Dictionary. © 2012 Farlex, Inc. All Rights Reserved”
What contributes less to society than allegedly good academics like the authors of the paper discussed in this thread to have ‘modified’ the region’s history and the facts of the case to arrive at the conclusion that CO2 is responsible for the rise of the current bogeyman, ISIS?
