The 'Gore effect' turns ugly – CNN climate bias revealed

You know of the “Gore effect“, Wikiepedia describes it as  “…an informal and satirical term which alleges a causal relationship between unseasonable cold weather phenomena and global warming activism”, so it was appropriate to apply to the situation where the Gore’s Climate Reality Project group tried a political ploys that looked stupid: “I’m Too Hot” trucks and offers of free ice cream to this week’s Environmental Protection Agency hearings on power-plant emissions…when it was 58 degrees and raining. Obviously, CNN’s Bill Weir doesn’t understand satire, much less how to be a professional journalist.

From Mediaite:

It’s safe to say CNN anchor Bill Weir is not a fan of climate change deniers.

On Thursday, the Twitter account for Fox Nation, a blog run by Fox News, tweeted a link to a post headlined, “Climate Doesn’t Cooperate With Al Gore’s Group’s Visit to Denver EPA Hearings.”

The story, aggregated from the Washington Times, relates to a Denver visit by former Vice President Al Gore‘s “Climate Reality Project” for EPA hearings on power plant emissions.

The group showed up to hand out ice cream even though it was 58 degrees.

Weir retweeted the link, with his own comment: “Weather is not climate, you willfully ignorant fucksticks.”

==============================================================

One wonders why he didn’t say same the same thing about Gore and his ice-cream trucks to treat the “I’m too hot” weather that never materialized. Oh, yeah, bias.

This is probably the best reason ever to tune out CNN, when they hire emotional children like this instead of journalistic professionals, it’s pretty much pointless to watch any longer.

After what I experienced recently, I’m beginning to think that most climate alarmists are nothing more than emotional children disguising themselves as professionals.

UPDATE: I posted this short message, twice. It was deleted both times, but the second time I saved a screen cap. Apparently Bill Weir has an ego that is easily bruised, or there’s somebody at CNN running interference.

July 31, 2014 11:51 am

Genghis… NO you are not wrong but that wasn’t his point. Bill Weir’s is trying to a point out that some folks have trouble understanding basic concepts about science. Regardless of whether one accept AGW or doesnt.. regardless of what one thinks of Al Gore or Rush… one cool day or one hot day at any given location has nothing at all to do with proven or disproving anything regarding AGW.
The argument presented by Fox Nation and numerous other conservatives / skeptics when Al Gore (who IS a serious blowhole) shows up on a cool day in Denver to pedal his crack pot ideas… is every bit as ignorant and stupid as any comment made by Al Gore.
Indeed we even see such similar comments being made on a fairly advanced and scientifically literate blog such as this one. But if one were to take a look at some other Blogs such as lets say JOHN COLEMANS or REAL SCIENCE… You see numerous references being made to the fact that… Because we had a colder than normal winter…or a in active hurricane season… or a cool weak in the middle of July… that all AGW theory is total bullshit.

The morally and ethically disabled; Al Gore, Bill Weir and Russell Seitz, are parasites who survive by destroying others.

July 31, 2014 11:52 am

That’s where you are wrong Jim, it’s all climate change. When it’s cold, global warming caused it. When it snows, ‘it only makes sense’ that global warming is causing it. Droughts? definitely global warming. Rain, a direct result of global warming. Just so you know, 2014 will be the hottest year on record. ( adjusting the record to reflect that is not a problem. Whatever it takes) And every storm is extreme, super, or unprecedented. Soon I expect them to link earthquakes and volcanoes will be caused by AGW.

Actually David, contrary to your “settled science”, I think most conservatives are not religious at all, but are more interested in preserving freedom and free markets, and fighting socialism.

I trust you will agree then when it’s hot in July that this isn’t global warming, it’s weather. You’d be going against the greats: Hansen, Mann,………. One could argue, though the record cool July night and day in several places in Alabama (57C & 81 the other day) when the Team about 10 years ago was been telling us that snow will even be a thing of the past with global warming, Arctic ice will be gone, etc. This is especially true when temperatures of 100 years ago have also been pushed down and recent temps pried up by the temp keepers. Note the recent paper talking about extremes getting worse with global warming!! They are getting worried about this stuff and have widened their nets.

JimS says:
“Mr. Weir is only partially right when he said “weather is not climate.” When it is cold, that is weather; when it is hot, that is climate change”
Jim,
That was how it used to be. When it got too cold for too long, that changed. In recent years. Research has discovered(only after the warming of the 80’s/90’s stopped) that, now blizzards and extreme cold are from global warming.
http://www.motherjones.com/blue-marble/2014/01/john-holdren-video-polar-vortex
“A growing body of evidence suggests that the kind of extreme cold being experienced by much of the United States as we speak is a pattern that we can expect to see with increasing frequency as global warming continues,” Holdren asserts”
Funny how every single kind of bad weather is now linked with man burning fossil fuels/increasing CO2 and climate change/global warming.
In 32 years observing weather as an operational meteorologist and studying weather going back over a century, the evidence I see is that the last 3 decades have featured less extreme weather than previous decades…………with the exception of excessive rain events.

Apparently 58% of conservatives answered no.
From this the lackwits concluded that 58% of conservatives believe in creationism and hence believe the earth is only 5000 years old.
In other words, from a lone fact, they added two unsupportable assumptions to arrive at a predetermined conclusion.

July 31, 2014 12:17 pm

@ David Tolleris 11:51.
Sure he is.
However using the CAGW Team IPCC ™ handbook.
Storms, heat waves, floods, droughts, famine are all signs and symptoms of CAGW.
The concept that science supports the myth of the magic gas is in tatters, the credibility of pathetic wee creatures such as Bill Weird and Al Gore is long gone.
Certainly some people have difficulty understanding basic concepts about science, for example extrapolating linear doom from cyclic behaviour is a classic.
#1 play from the UN IPCC.
Of course I am sure you have those empirical measurements conclusively linking rising emissions of carbon dioxide by mankind to the ever warming estimated Average Global Temperature.
Perhaps you could share them with the UN, as I am sure the eternally grateful IPCC would insist on granting you a Nobel Peace Prize.
What percentage of the planets current recovery from the little ice age is Anthropogenic?
Somehow the IPCC cannot find the first and cannot define the second, but by your comments above, you appear to be certain of both.
Or are you here to remind us mere mortals, that while standards are good; Double Standards are even better?
As the Media and the organizations concerned about CAGW have long used every weather event as evidence of their fantasy, yet you leap in to decry any who mock them using their own metric.
Finally AGW is yet to be measured and is indistinguishable from natural climate so far.
CAGW is the meme under debate and subject to mockery.

Part of the problem is that all too much of this kind of bad behavior has been ignored and in doing so there is a silent consent to it. What needs to be done is that the bad behavior be highlighted and denounced as unacceptable thereby creating the opportunity for learning and growth. I agree that some people won’t learn because they do not wish to but by putting the lesson in the spotlight others may learn about what is acceptable behavior.

These people start as angry young men and fail to learn anything from life. They often expect others to bow to their 10, 20, 30 years of knowledge and experience but the reality is that both the knowledge and experience they have is usually just one years worth the is now 10, 20 or 30 years old.
The idiot from CNN had a song written about his lack of emotional stability. It is by Billy Joel.
“There’s a place in the world for the angry young man
With his working class ties and his radical plans
He refuses to bend, he refuses to crawl,
He’s always at home with his back to the wall.
And he’s proud of his scars and the battles he’s lost,
He struggles and bleeds as he hangs on the cross-
And he likes to be known as the angry young man.
Give a moment or two to the angry young man,
With his foot in his mouth and his heart in his hand.
He’s been stabbed in the back, he’s been misunderstood,
It’s a comfort to know his intentions are good.
He sits in a room with a lock on the door,
With his maps and his medals laid out on the floor
And he likes to be known as the angry young man.
I believe I’ve passed the age of consciousness & righteous rage
I found that just surviving was a noble fight.
I once believed in causes too, I had my pointless point of view,
Life went on no matter who was wrong or right, ohhhhh
And there’s always a place for the angry young man,
With his fist in the air and his head in the sand.
And he’s never been able to learn from mistakes,
He can’t understand why his heart always breaks.
His honor is pure and his courage as well,
He’s fair and he’s true and he’s boring as hell!
And he’ll go to the grave as an angry old man.
Whoa, and there’s always a place for the angry young man
With his working class ties and his radical plans
He refuses to bend, he refuses to crawl,
He’s always at home with his back to the wall.
And he’s proud of his scars and the battles he’s lost,
He struggles and bleeds ‘til he hangs on the cross
And he likes to be known as the angry young man.”

David Tolleris,
Where can I find someone making the comment that one cold day proves AGW is wrong?
You’re no better than Weir.
You both leaped with the alarmist’s straw man nonsense that mendaciously morphs every mention of a cold day by skeptics into an assertion never made.
Worse yet you then ginned up some motivation to attach to what was never claimed.
Hypocrisy is the elephant in the room because alarmists have been attributing every weather event as evidence of climate change.
Skeptics, in pointing out some cold Gore day oythjr any other observation, are simply mocking the alarmist loons. They are NOT literally asserting, implying, suggesting or concluding that it is “proof” of anything.
Now why don’t you go apply your Weirology to something real.

July 31, 2014 12:54 pm

I don’t think I made my point very well earlier.
The Warmists believe that the Global average temperature right now is the Climate. They also believe that temperatures correlate very closely over the entire globe, so that if it is a little warmer here today it is a little warmer everywhere. That is the foundation of their whole theory.
In other words they believe weather is climate. Skeptics though are not allowed to make that claim.

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, that’s stupidity. Insanity is holding two opposing ideas in your head at the same time, believing in both at the same time. Like “Global Warming causes warming. Global Warming causes cooling.” or “Global Warming causes flooding. Global Warming causes drought.”

John Slayton: I’m sure I’d be concerned about parents’ objections to language seen by their kids on WUWT. It might be a good opportunity to teach both that intentions are more important than the choice of words used to communicate them, and that the use of socially acceptable vocabulary to injure others is as unacceptable as the words they don’t want their kids repeating in loud voices while waiting in a supermarket checkout line. Similar language is ubiquitous, and I know many parents’ concerns are based more on their fear that others will assume the kid learned the terminology from Mom or Dad than on the kid’s familiarity with the words.

Never have so many pompous know-it-alls had such acute cognitive dissonance thrust upon them by the scientific facts. I can actually understand their anger at now having to somehow avoid becoming laughing stocks in public.
From Wikipedia (I think this is OK. I don’t think Connolly’s got to it yet):
“An early version of cognitive dissonance theory appeared in Leon Festinger’s 1956 book, When Prophecy Fails. This book gives an account of the deepening of cult members’ faith following the failure of a cult’s prophecy that a UFO landing was imminent. The believers met at a pre-determined place and time, believing they alone would survive the Earth’s destruction. The appointed time came and passed without incident. They faced acute cognitive dissonance: had they been the victim of a hoax? Had they donated their worldly possessions in vain? Most members chose to believe something less dissonant to resolve reality not meeting their expectations: they believed that the aliens had given Earth a second chance, and the group was now empowered to spread the word that earth-spoiling must stop. The group dramatically increased their proselytism despite the failed prophecy”

That is the funniest aspect of this. The AGW defenders are so totally clueless they do not even realize that they are being mocked for their total lack of consistency and that they themselves are the ones who are ignoring the scientific evidence and beating the drums of hysteria based on synthetic data that is so flawed it is not just wrong but almost 180 degrees out. I have pointed out to some AGW defenders that the real data (actual measurements) are falling out the bottom of the model predicted range of warming to the point that even the high points of the real measured data no longer crosses the lowest bound of the models predictions.
They just shake their head and you can see a “does not compute error” scroll across their face then they jump on some other psudo fact and start beating the drum again as if nothing ever happened.

On Monday, CTV National News broadcast a weather is climate segment, showing various weather events around the country. A possible tornado, heavy rain, forest fires due to summer weather. One woman was interviewed who said essentially “this isn’t Oklahoma, we aren’t supposed to get tornados”.
David Philips (As a senior climatologist for Environment Canada, David Phillips is Canada’s weather guru.) said “This is the new climate”, implying that climate change is causing these weather events. “We aren’t getting new weather, we’re getting more extreme weather” he said.
The term “Global Warming” as been dropped from the leftists news media in Canada and “Climate Change” is declared and repeated often.
I still find it funny when Environment Canada put out a warning earlier this year warning Canadians that we were going to experience some pleasant weather. And it was pleasant. Is pleasant weather a result of global warming / climate change ?

philincalifornia,
I have been fascinated for a long time with Festinger’s Seekers. Their belief in a shaman’s assertions is no different from many climate alarmists’ belief in assertions of runaway global warming. In both cases, it is a religion.
In
2003 Michael Crichton spoke in San Francisco. Here is a partial transcript:

Today, one of the most powerful religions in the Western World is environmentalism. Environmentalism seems to be the religion of choice for urban atheists. Why do I say it’s a religion? Well, just look at the beliefs. If you look carefully, you see that environmentalism is in fact a perfect 21st century remapping of traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs and myths:
There’s an initial Eden, a paradise, a state of grace and unity with nature; there’s a fall from grace into a state of pollution as a result of eating from the tree of knowledge, and as a result of our actions there is a judgment day coming for us all. We are all energy sinners, doomed to die, unless we seek salvation, which is now called sustainability.
Sustainability is salvation in the church of the environment. Just as organic food is its communion — that pesticide-free wafer that the right people with the right beliefs imbibe.

I see no real difference between Mrs Keech’s Seekers, and many of the wild-eyed believers in the “carbon” scare. To me, that is very scary, because they have the government supporting their pseudo-science.

When you add up all of today’s weather everywhere, that is the atmospheric climate for today. A distinction between climate and weather would seem to depend on an arbitrary choice of a time scale. We may say the atmospheric climate means all places, and weather relates to a much smaller place. That is a difference of size scale, arguably also arbitrary.

If the poll question actually was over whether “evolution (is) based on random mutations alone”, then the correct answer IS no.
There is this little thing called natural selection, and without that essential quasi-deterministic component to SUPPLEMENT random variation, the millions of different intricate, highly perfected adaptations that make up the biosphere would not have evolved.
It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest to discover that some preening liberal academic would try to show that conservatives are ignorant using a poll question which is itself fatally defective.

July 31, 2014 4:50 pm

As point of order on this science blog.
Evolution theory as Darwin described, and universally accepted, is not based on “random mutations.” Charles Darwin in the mid-19th Century had no concept of DNA mutations, random or otherwise. He saw traits, behaviors, and physical characteristics that aided or hindered a species reproductive success in a given environment, and that when the environment changed, so did the traits or characteristics in subsequent generations or closely related species in slightly different environments. Successive generations were then naturally selected for or against those traits (phenotypes) (natural selection drives Evolution of new species to fit ecological niches and environmental adaptations). Indeed, there is now evidence that while genetic mutations are what drive most phenotypic differences (the invocation of random genetic mutations only came after the nature of genetic material was understood in the second half of the 1950’s), epigenetic modifications can also be passed down to successive generations (via heritable non-genetic mutations in the germ line) where differing methylation patterns on nucleotide bases that affect gene expression are propagated.

Who do you and Weir go after? The people that mocked them when their “I’m Too Hot” stunt backfired. My heart virtue is the nurturance of intelligence, and increasing the numbers, joy, and vitality of all life, especially people and my own family. I am also heavily into science and truth. The alarmists cut very bluntly and directly across those things, calling up down, black white and good “evil.” They have killed myriads of people minimum. They scream with horror at a COLD 57F planet ever warming up, they call pH 8.1 “acid” and they call the very basis of terrestrial life (CO2) a pollutant.
I get a great deal madder than any alarmist. In my own mind, I use language much more ferocious than what is reported here. So I understand their anger. I do not fault them for that, but for their lack of respect for truth and for life.

Mr. Weir and a CNN cameraman came to the International Conference on Climate Change at Las Vegas in early July. He chose to interview only two people (as best I know), Lord Monckton and me. Surrounded by top notch Ph.D. scientists who came with great papers debunking global warming, he chose to ignore them and talk to two old men with lesser degrees. From his very first question he was hostile and disrespectful. I begged him to interview the scientist and get the real story that debunks the global warming hype that comes out of Washington. He laughed at me and said that if a reporter could destroy the global warming science, which is supported by 97 percent of scientist, that reporter would be as famous as Woodward and Bernstien, but that was impossible because the science is settled and ….. I suggested he talk to Patrick Moore and Fred Singer. He said something about the payroll of the Kock (?) brothers. He said he was going to travel around the world and gather he evidence of global warming.
Wier is producing one of those new prime time hour long documentaries for CNN. I am bracing myself for his attack. I am sure he will dismiss me as a flat earther nut job. I am bracing myself. He has a substantial background. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Weir

You will not find me using weather events to debunk global warming. I use the lack of any verification of the computer models predicted temperature increases or the lack of the predicted mid level equatorial warm spot as failure to of the data to validate the theory of carbon dioxide as a super greenhouse gas that produces extraordinary warming through a radiative forcing interaction with water vapor. I never point to weather events to debunk the warming alarmists. But when they use weather events to hype global warming, I do point out that such events have been occurring throughout the history of observation and there is a lack of any causation between the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere and the events they are using to hype their alarmism.

Woodward and Bernstien are famous for reporting what no one else could show. Weir is trying to become famous for reporting what – that 97% of scientists are correct?
It 97% of all scientists believe something and they are right, that isn’t news. It is simply what you would expect. If 97% of scientists believe something and they are wrong – then you have a news story.
So, in reporting that grass is green, Weir shows that he is no Woodward and Bernstien. Instead he is like a cheerleader — hurrah for our team.

So let me get this right, Weir is working on a project that documents weather and blaming it on global warming, and on the flip side throwing a tantrum when Fox News jokes about how chilly it is outside in July. It is a Cult. At this point the cultists are beginning to realize all is not well. It is not anger we see, it is fear. They are emotionally invested in their cult to the point that any doubt that creeps in is totally devastating to their id. They are beginning to realize that without the fulfillment of their cult beliefs they are of no value to the world or even themselves. Think about it, everything that you are is valueless, ridiculed. Everything that you believed was incorrect, a lie told to you to extract money, honor, from you and everyone around you, a con. You go from “hero” to “dupe” to “accomplice”. If you have no morals or ethics that is not a problem, but if you are genuinely a good concerned person looking for a replacement for conventional religion this is a very large problem. And I hope they choke on it.

August 1, 2014 8:47 am

I always find it a little bit amusing when climate alarmists like Weir get so emotional and start engaging in name-calling whenever the subject of CAGW skeptics or the contrary evidence comes up. Their emotional and spiritual devotion to the Holy Faith (CAGW) takes precedence over all else, and their emotions and behavior demonstrate that we are indeed dealing with people who are treating CAGW like the religion that it has become.
With little or no scientific background, people like Weir have no understanding of how science and scientific discourse is supposed to work and how it differs from the way that he and alarmist “scientists” like Mann tend to behave in the face of a controversial issue like CAGW. Weir and his ilk just cannot understand that science is a matter of facts (from observation) , logic and reasoning (IMHO) wherein one does not make unprovable excuses to casually dismiss evidence that contradicts the theory at issue.
“Journalists” like Weir are getting increasingly lazy these days wherein they no longer feel the need to conduct investigative journalism wherein they dig deep into the issue to ensure all the facts have been brought to light. Only the “facts” that jive with their personal beliefs matter.
It is sad and frustrating to see the way journalism these days has deteriorated since the days when I was a kid in the 1960’s watching Walter Cronkite on TV. I can only wonder if those days will ever be back someday….

From what I’ve seen the preeminent mode of GW or CC is a rise in daily minimum temps in Northern Temperate Latitudes, mostly in the cold weather months. You can see how this presents a substantial challenge to those who are dedicated to flogging CO2 demonizing Climate Alarmism. Natural selection it is called and it has to do with variation within the species. Thus species evolve into new species, and you do not need to invoke mutation to account for evolution.
So, mpainter, you must therefore believe that dog breeders could produce a breed of dog that has wings merely by crossbreeding the right varieties of dog. They merely have to keep at it long enough.
If, however, the DNA coding for wings is not to be found within the genetics of any dog, no amount of crossbreeding would result in a dog with wings. It is this realization that caused geneticists to invoke mutation to account for evolution, instead of simple variation within the species.
However, since DNA mutation has only been found to disable functions or structures, and never to produce new ones, the only way to invoke evolution at all is to conflate it with variation within the species.

At 11:51 AM on 31 July, David Tolleris had asserted that:

The argument presented by Fox Nation and numerous other conservatives / skeptics when Al Gore (who IS a serious blowhole) shows up on a cool day in Denver to pedal his crack pot ideas… is every bit as ignorant and stupid as any comment made by Al Gore.

And in that much, Mr. Tolleris (who is himself a meteorologist) is abso-friggin’-lutely right.
Though the humor of this situation obviously has escaped him, I can’t fault him too much for his critical disdain anent Fox News. Hell, I’ve known him for more than thirty years, and he’s not the kind of man who would fail to stay mindful of the biases among Fox’s ex-Journalism majors, too. Were that not enough, in the competition for eyeballs, Fox stations seek the attentions of the simple-minded just as much as do the leftards on the other networks, for the botched and the gullible of whatever political persuasion are more easily parted from their valuta, and the sponsors love them for this.
This, however, does make the Fox news programming a weak reed upon which the rigorously skeptical critics of the “man-made global warming” bogosity ought never to lean, even with appropriate reservations.
So how’s it going, Dave? Still wearing that deerstalker thitherabouts?
