In other words, medieval naturalists believed that Nature was the greatest hoaxer of all.

The 2 reactions our fellow (but unthinking and/or uneducated) humans usually have when confronted by topics they don’t understand but somehow get convinced are important, seem to be:
1) Pseudo intellectual – people actually convince themselves they understand the “essence” of the issue, and consider their uninformed/uneducated opinion to be as valid as that of any “expert” in the subject.
2) Witch doctor – whomever scares them the most wins, especially if it’s a trivial but apocalyptic explanation.
Both of these reactions involve over-developed self esteem and loss of faith in “experts”. Examples like this Madagascar story would be funny if they weren’t so poignant.
Not as funny as the joke of the dihydrogen monoxide, but even more illustrative than that one.

The two are now battling it out, but we can all help by immediately living in mud huts, and eating leaves and twigs.

While I support the premise, I believe further experimentation will reveal the same pattern of behavior in many groups. People tend seek out information which support their beliefs while filtering out information that contradicts those beliefs. Getting people to objectively evaluate new information is darn near impossible.
Add to that the difficulty in ascertaining the veracity of information found anywhere on the internet, The traditional media is no longer trusted. Science is not trusted. The government is not well trusted.

I did research it before commenting and I conclude it is not an elaborate hoax, but the response so far suggests that if it were an experiment to analyze the gullibility of the skeptic crowd, it appears to demonstrate that alarmists and skeptics are similarly naive. That suggests it is more of a human trait than anything to do with affiliation.

The “Last Polar Bear on the Last Ice Floe” video was exposed as a fraud but continues to be passed around and believed to be true. Emotionally appealing and bias-affirming falsehoods get passed around much more than true statements, and in some circles, truth is entirely established by how many “likes” you get and how often you get the same email forwarded to you. Expect the “I’d rather go blind than eat Golden Rice” photo to continue to be a slogan and an inspiration to young anti-GMO folks. I’m not sure this was a “win” for the truth.
The organic only fundamentalists are very difficult to reason with. The simple use of chemical fertilizers is supporting more than a third of the people who live on the planet. That is a fact. However, in the mad, irrational crusade to force organic practices on all people in the name of sustainability, NGOs and western intellectuals are working to ban chemical fertilizers.
This would be such a blow to our ability to feed ourselves and to export food, that growers believe it is now necessary to develop types of cereals that are transgenetically enhanced to retrieve more nitrogen and phosphorous from the soil. The idea that such increasingly nitrogen efficient crops would have to be developed and patented and sold is the direct result of the backwards, doltish attempt to end the use of simple N-K-P fertilizers.
In short, the organic fundamentalists interfere with what they know so little about, that they are forcing the development of new breeds to do what nature already does.
Organic farming only makes up 1% of farming in the US. There is a reason for this. It is so wasteful and labor intensive that there is hardly any yield, and some crops cannot be grown at all.
And yet, heartless NGOs and western academics are parachuting into foreign countries, and signing these poor farmers up for sustainability programs which force them into organic only practices. When the wining and dining of the locals is over with, however, the loss of the use of fungicides and other controls has resulted in severe losses of yeilds. How can locals afford these social experiments by environmental activists?.
For example, coffee growers in Central America have lost most of their coffee to a form of pathogen, which other growers had controlled through use of fungicides:

The use of GMOs is not a silver bullet! People need to meet the needs of their crops with simple N-K-P, and protect the crops from thousands of fungi which attack food both before and after harvest. Expecting GMOs to provide miracles without controlling these deadly attacks of insects and blight, and without feeding the crops, is not tenable.
I have two words regarding Monsanto – “Times” and “Beach”. That one incident showed Monsanto to be both incompetent and dishonest. That was a long time ago – perhaps they’ve improved. If there were to be a corporation in charge of my food supply, I would prefer it be a corporation with a better reputation than Monsanto. Just sayin’…

The use of legislation to control the food supply is the root of the problem. For example, the EU has banned the use of cinnamon and the sale of homemade jam preserved in jars.
These kinds of top down controls of the food supply are dangerous. The controls which determine which seeds should be available in different regions is a goal of sustainability activists and it is arbitrary and destructive. This year, in my own county, the selection of seeds I could buy in packets was reduced to next to nothing. Many of the seeds I usually buy were not for sale in any of the chain stores I go to. The legislation restricting our ornamentals, vegetables and fruits is the real issue – companies become bound by these new laws just as individuals are.
If you can make something sound bad many people will sign up without knowing anything about it. There was a good segment on The Man Show where Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Corolla asked people to sign an petition to end woman’s sufferage. Many people blindly signed the petition to end women’s right to vote without knowing. They also did the dihydrogen monoxide joke.
But it just shows how people want to be part of something. They want to feel like they have done a good thing even if they don’t know the fall out from their actions.
Pranking Greenpeace? That seems a bit too easy. After all, their currency speculation department recently lost €3.8 million of donations.

If the theoretical possibility of the whole “CO2 is the COz” of anything different than an ideal day or climate hadn’t been seized upon to promote a political agenda then there would be no need to address the ridiculous things political funding to promote a political agenda has spawned.

Monsanto had nothing to do with Times Beach, at least, not directly. Mostly it was waaay overblown and now questionable whether anyone needed evacuation. Certainly I have never heard of any health issues attributable to the dioxin at Times Beach, nor did those I knew that had been evacuated have any issues (they were rednecks looong before any dioxin contamination, so that doesn’t count).

No, I’m saying they’re fixing the wrong problem with the wrong solution and they’re doing it because they want to get something out of it. It might be simply money. It might be getting rid of non-GM -seeds, so they are closer to getting a monopoly on rice production, which means more money. It might be something else.
Why is this the wrong problem? Because if you are deficient in vitamin A, you are most likely not lacking vitamin A (or carotein), but fat. Sources of carotein are many (for example paprikas, kale, tomatoes, nori) and like carrots they are cheap. In comparison fat is relatively expensive. Vitamin A is fat-soluble, which means humans can digest it only if there is fat in their diet.
So feed them golden rice all you want, it doesn’t make the least bit of difference unless you introduce fat in their diet. And if you do, then propably you have solved the vitamin-A deficiency problem even without the golden rice.
I’d be really surprised if Monsanto didn’t know this already.
The problem with environmental regulations is that the government is seizing the power to tell everyone what they can grown in thier bioregion, and what they cannot grow. These environmental regulations have as a goal locking down regions so that they are reliant on sustainable, organic practices and native species. The government controls extend not only to what can be grown, but methods used to control pests, weeds, and pathogens, and even how food is packaged. The government then picks certain companies to provide the products which they have mandated, and even dictates where they can be sold. Therefore, the monopolies and special interests are the effects of the environmental regulations, and not the cause. This state control of what companies create is known as fa8cism. It is not only heirloom seeds which are being affected but any seed which is considered non native to an area. Now we are getting somewhere and seeing the larger picture.
It is good to see that some posters here, such as oz speaks up, are concerned about the potential a monopoly being created. If this is occurring with formerly good companies, who used to be in business to please the customer, and are now solely creating products to please the government agencies, then we are dealing with an economic system already mentioned above – fa8cism. Other examples of state mandates directing what companies create include products required by the renewable energy coercions, in which customers are forced by law to purchase energy from worthless wind turbines, and companies are forced to add them to the supply. The car companies if directed using regulations and mandates will also try to sell electric cars – possibly with three wheels. If more refrigerants, lighting, and soaps are banned, newer products directed by the state will be sold by the companies, and many of these are also worthless, ineffective, more expensive, and sometimes genuinely toxic. like CFLs. Does anyone see a pattern here? Who is the customer in these cases? Remember that monopolies selling mandated products is the result of government environmental regulation, not the cause. It is pandemic across all economic sectors, not just the ornamental, vegetable, and fruit market.
So if oz speaks up supports other mandates and coercions in other cases “to protect the environment,” then the reality is that he is wining about Monsanto, but his hand is in the cookie jar in creating an economy in which the environmental activists using government are the only customer – not the seed buyer, or the car buyer, or the energy user.
This has been called “environmental capitalism,” but remember that any purchases which are involuntary are not capitalism. Ever.
