Pacific Leaders Worried About 'Climate Gravy Train' – Criticise Aussie PM Tony Abbott's Apostacy

Story submitted by Eric Worrall

From Australia Network News: Pacific presidents speak out against Australia’s stand on climate change

Leaders of small Pacific nations have spoken out against Tony Abbott’s efforts to organise a global coalition against Obama’s climate push.

The comments from the presidents of Kiribati and Marshall Islands came as Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott met US President Barrack Obama for formal talks in Washington.

The leaders suggested Australia’s climate stance under Tony Abbott risked further isolating Australia from the Pacific.

Kiribati’s President Anote Tong says climate change is an issue of survival for Pacific Island states, not just economics.

“We’re not talking about the growth GDP, we’re not talking about what it means in terms of profit and losses of the large corporations, we’re talking about our survival,” he told Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat

Source: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-06-13/pacific-presidents/5521478

President Anote Tong has received strong criticism in recent years for the rise of authoritarianism under his rule, such as the recent forced closure of an independent newspaper critical of his government.

http://pacific.scoop.co.nz/2012/05/pmc-slams-kiribati-ministry-for-muzzling-independent-paper/

Politicians who crush dissent, free speech and criticism of government mistakes are rarely associated with a healthy domestic economy, so President Tong may be counting on future climate wealth transfers from Western countries to help prop up his regime.

The islanders need to take the long view. At some point in the future they will have large areas of new land added to their nation as the waters retreat during the advent of the next glaciation. They just need to be patient.

Of course they would complain about the derailment of the Climate Gravy Train. They are probably not sufficiently knowledgeable to understand most of the stuff posted here, and why should they bother when the expert scientists are 97% sure that it’s happening and they absolutely know that their islands are sinking!

***turning a scandal on its head, with faux concern about the Maldives & Bangladesh & funding from The Green Climate Fund/IMF/World Bank??
17 June: Guardian: John Vidal: Greenpeace’s £3m gamble could yet reap dividends in the fight against climate change
Yes, Greenpeace got it wrong – but if it only costs £3m to prove that speculation on risky markets is madness, it may be money well spent
PHOTO CAPTION? ‘Greenpeace may like to be seen as the brave underdog, but it employs 2,200 people, turns over about £200m a year worldwide and is just as much as multinational as the oil and chemical companies that it challenges in court or at sea.’ Photograph: Graeme Robertson for the Guardian
Its political enemies smirk, thousands of small donors question the Amsterdam-based organisation’s financial competence, and the folk who make a business of pointing out other people’s faults are humbled and have to apologise.
On the surface this seems like many other finance scandals, with a single person, a rogue trader, blamed for what is probably an institutional failure…
The £3m loss also hides the fact that even without its rogue trader the group lost money last year. The recession has been particularly hard for international charities, who are increasingly constricted by governments and have had to cut staff, reduce salaries and retract, thanks largely to the greed of bankers and financial institutions who plunged whole economies into crisis with their risk-taking…
***It hurts when Greenpeace loses the widows’ mite, but it will be nowhere near as painful as when countries such as Bangladesh or the Maldives are told there is no money in the Green Climate Fund, the IMF or the World Bank to build defences against rising sea levels or storm surges because anonymous rogue traders and trusted financiers in New York or London have misjudged the market and lost billions…

Well? Tony Abbott has been speaking with Prime Minister Harper. Seems they are birds of a feather.
France is saying? There must be a united front against fascists and dictatorships. Too late for Canada to be saved. The Australians may still be able to save their country.
PM Harper has approved the Enbridge pipeline for Communist China’s benefit. So, Canada is a total loss. BC is already overrun with Chinese. China already owns a huge chunk of the tar sands.
Communist China has polluted much of their farmland and 40% of their water. Dead pigs come floating down China’s rivers. Now, we can have dead pigs floating down Canada’s rivers too.
As an Engineer, I am applying overseas. Canada will not be fit to live in and I refuse to have my little girl brought up in Harper’s fascist dictatorship. China wants their history and culture taught in Canadian schools. So, it is time to leave Canada.

Their biggest problem is not the reduction of land due to sea level rise, if any, its because of overpopulation. With imported foods, safer boats, less tribal, modern medicines etc their increased population is outstripping the available land.
That’s why so many migrate to New Zealand and Australia where they can earn very good wages by island standards.
Climate Change, sea level rise etc is just the level to get the govt money.

From the Wiki entry on the economy of Kiribati:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Kiribati
“In one form or another, Kiribati gets a large portion of its income from abroad. Examples include fishing licenses, development assistance, worker remittances, and tourism. Given Kiribati’s limited domestic production ability, it must import nearly all of its essential foodstuffs and manufactured items; it depends on these external sources of income for financing.”
Kiribati have also apparently been running down their sovereign wealth fund the last few years, though there is still a lot of money in it, for now. The wealth fund was created from phosphate mining which ended in the 1970s.

the MSM in Australia happily gives McKibben space to insult our Govt:
17 June: SMH: Bill McKibben: Tony Abbott’s climate change policy makes me cringe
Americans who travelled abroad during the George W. Bush years have some sympathy for Australians and Canadians right now – it’s not easy being citizens of countries run by international
laughing stocks. People laugh at you, then get angry: just remember Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo or referring to Australia as Austria.
Americans have a slightly easier time of it at the moment. Barack Obama is no Winston Churchill, and there’s still plenty of reason for the rest of the world to look askance (drone attacks, the NSA collecting your Gmail). But at least he’s a serious human being with a wide-ranging intellect…
Author and journalist Bill McKibben is co-founder of climate change movement, 350.org.
http://www.smh.com.au/comment/tony-abbotts-climate-change-policy-makes-me-cringe-20140617-zsa7t.html
17 June: Washington Times: Kristen East: Climate change scientists stand by 97 percent figure
Half of Americans “don’t know there is a consensus”
“Do we still need to do this in 2014? Sometimes things, they need to be said more than once, [but] it’s really horrible that we even have to be having this conversation,” said Naomi Oreskes, a Harvard professor of history in science, who co-authored a study that posited the 97 percent claim more than 10 years ago.
Ms. Oreskes and Peter Jacobs, a researcher in environmental science at George Mason University, said that while Republicans and Democrats hold staunchly opposing views on climate change, the 97 percent statistic remains a subject up for debate only because Americans aren’t aware of the extent of the consensus within the science community.
“There’s an enormous disconnect between lines of what scientists think and what Americans think the scientists believe,” Mr. Jacobs said. “More than half of Americans don’t know that there is a consensus.”…
Mr. Jacobs acknowledged that while scientists have been wrong before — citing the lack of consensus over the theory of plate tectonics as an example — he said, “uncertainty has two faces.
“Just because [the climate change consensus] may not turn out to be exactly correct, that doesn’t mean that things are going to be great,” he said. “Things could turn out to be much worse. We could just as well end up on the bottom as on the top.”

Eric,
Thanks for that!
It illustrates Kiribati’s main concern is not about ‘rising seas’ as much as it is about sinking account balances. Their main source of wealth was mined phospates…. and now they hope to mine AGW ‘fertilizer’ until that runs out also.

Ahh! So it was okay to dig up all that phosphate and create a big pile of money – never mind the shrinking islands. But now that the pile of money is shrinking, they want climate refugee handouts (or any handouts for that matter).

Climate and pipeline Protestors are sometimes a bit clueless…

For example — Line 9 — the protestors were not aware that the pipeline had been running with no significant incidents for 40 years. They thought it was a new pipeline — not that the application was for a simple reversal of direction.
Some of the political leaders have figured out that many of the protests are due to ignorance. In Canada it looks like foreign money is feeding the protestors.

An important study on this subject is “Sea Level Rise and the Ongoing Battle of Tarawa”
(http://sites.agu.org/sharingscience/files/2012/10/2012EO170001_rga.pdf). This article appeared in the magazine Eos.
The problems on this group of islands are attributed by the government to climate change. See appendix 1, “Issues related to climate change on South Tarawa”, in
http://www.climate.gov.ki/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/6_SOUTH-TARAWA-revised-2012.pdf!
This attribution is a dynamic information, mainly based on the future as forecasted by IPCC. “However, there is evidence that at present, climate change is not the main cause of coastal erosion, water shortages or overcrowding. Other issues, especially population growth and
the move to Western lifestyles, are having a more immediate impact. But any future plans to
tackle any of the above challenges need to provide for the growing contribution of climate
change over time.
” (p. 10)
The main reason for illness and child mortality is not climate change but overpopulation, what leads to overfishing, erosion, water pollution, ‘urban heat island’ effect (see Eos article), etc.
About the Kiribati government it says: “Many individual observations of erosion, flooding, or groundwater salinization, recorded in community consultations for internationally funded climate
change adaptation programs, are thus attributed to climate change without scientific analysis.

I’m not sure that bragging about a 40 year old pipeline being safe is a smart move. You do know that the pipeline that ruptured in Michigan was roughly the same age. News alert – pipelines wear out as they age. You also neglected to mention that Enbridge is proposing to move heavy tar sands crude through the pipeline, which is a much harsher crude than the pipeline has carried in the past. The condensate used to dilute the tar sands crude causes pressure variations in the pipeline, far more so than has occurred with the oil it used to transport. Oh, and Enbridge refused to carry out a hydrostatic test on the pipeline. If the pipeline is so safe, why not agree to do the test?

This reaction makes perfect sense once Climate Change is rightfully seen as the more palatable excuse for the kind of global transfers enacted by the UN in 1974 under the name NIEO–New International Economic Order. I have those documents as well as reports created the next year by the Aspen Institute. Then in 1976, in conjunction with the US Bicentennial, the Club of Rome actually came to Philly to discuss the intended change in direction globally to fulfill these plans for global redistribution. Harlan Cleveland created the report for UN leaders laying out that vision. Have that too.
None of those play well as a PR pitch. So Global Warming and ozone depletion and maybe freezing all begin to be touted as necessitating the always desired redistribution. Except it gets pitched now as damages or the costs of precautionary measures instead of the outright redistribution all the 70s documents honestly reveal that it is.

=============
Correct. Tides Canada is US funded. It seeks to shape Canadian policy to the advantage of its wealthy US backers. By limiting the supply of Canadian energy to the US, they can artificially inflate the price of US supplies, increasing their profits.
The result, less jobs higher taxes for Canadians. More money for the extremely wealthy in the US. Because of course, we must prevent Global Warming in Canada. A country that for 90% of the year our major agricultural product is ice. Where we consider it a heat wave any time the temperatures creep above freezing.

cargo cult noun (Concise Encyclopedia)
Any religious movement based on the observation by local residents of the delivery of supplies by ship and aircraft to colonial officials. Cargo cults were observed chiefly in Melanesia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were characterized by the expectation of a new age of blessing and prosperity to be initiated by the arrival of a special “cargo” of goods from supernatural sources. Such beliefs may have expressed traditional millennial ideas, often revived by the teaching of Christian missions.

The Gilbert and Marshall Islands are coral atolls. The highest elevations on these are seldom over twenty feet above sea level. Storms can completely erase an island imperiling all the inhabitants. Few places on earth are more subject to the threat of catastrophic change. And change they do, the topography of coral atolls is constantly changing. They are not stable places. If over 50% of North American’s believe “climate change is real and something should be done about it.” Why should we be surprised that isolated and and very poor islanders believe the horror stories offered up to them about what will happen to their islands? Historical perspective and recollection among these peoples is rooted in oral tradition, more mythic than factual. I mean they call themselves Marshallese and Gilbertese (Kiribati is how the Islanders pronounce Gilbert). So there is no historically accurate record of the topography of these atolls. But the short history dating from the mid to late nineteenth century is enough to give a clear picture how much change occurs. So if the wise ones come to you with the keys to the secret knowledge that will make your Island home more safe and secure, what sort of idiot would publicly speak out against it? What is the upside for a Marshallese being outspokenly skeptical? What if he is wrong? Big downside. What if his skepticism is right? No upside. Its one thing to persuade a man he isn’t causing global warming, quite another to convince the islanders they aren’t suffering from its effects. Adanac might emigrate to the Marshalls. No wait, the Chinese are there too.

Just a quick reminder about something most here are aware of.

Abstract
The dynamic response of reef islands to sea-level rise: Evidence from multi-decadal analysis of island change in the Central Pacific
Low-lying atoll islands are widely perceived to erode in response to measured and future sea-level rise. Using historical aerial photography and satellite images this study presents the first quantitative analysis of physical changes in 27 atoll islands in the central Pacific over a 19 to 61 yr period. This period of analysis corresponds with instrumental records that show a rate of sea-level rise of 2.0 mm yr− 1 in the Pacific. Results show that 86% of islands remained stable (43%) or increased in area (43%) over the timeframe of analysis…….

Adanac who clearly signals his wont to have Canada regress to a backward country as his sig implies!! ,and has somehow been thwarted by a move away from the left in Canadian politics, now wants to immigrate.
This is very similar to the strident cry of the Anti Abbot haters that want to protect their entitlements from any encroachment or contribution to the recovery of the Australian economy, that suffered under the excesses of the Green/Labor period of the Rudd and Gillard Governments, that managed to squander a surplus into by our standards a huge debt in record time. That huge debt if not addressed now, will linger or grow exponentially in the future.
I see that some here still listen to the Greens leader Christine Milne and her band of watermelon cobbled together followers, who are trying desperately to stop the dismantling of their green quango – read “pot of salted away gold” to protect green idealism and onward waste on failed renewable energy schemes, their business as usual economy trainwreck.
Now back to adanac, I would encourage you to convince Greenpeace and all those other Green moneyed groups to buy into some third world country where you and your migrating companions can create your own green utopia, then you and all of the Abbot haters can get out of their respective countries and live under Bill McKibben (Weepy Bill) or some other Green dictator, and also open up and provide an attractive new country for resettlement of all those climate and war weary migrating citizens who are available for instant resettlement under the auspices of the United Nations.
In one fell swoop you will have solved your own problems and you and yours can live happily ever after and most of us in Australia would be happy if you took all of our whingers too, but you do need to make an effort and not expect the rest of the world to contribute to your paradise.
So get cracking and stump up the money enough to convince someone somewhere, that your presence will make their life better, simpler, greener, and more abundant. Easy Peasy!
