Showtime’s “Years of Living Dangerously” aired Sun, Apr 20, at 10:00 PM and didn’t even make the top 100 cable TV shows this week and was beaten in its time slot by a re-run episode of the animated cartoon Bob’s Burgers. Ouch!

According to the producer, this docudrama got the “big budget” treatment to the tune of $20 million. Looks like nobody cares.

Maybe it was the “journalists”. Matt Damon, Harrison Ford, Jessica Alba, Ian Somerhalder, Thomas Friedman, and many more celebrities and journalists participated in the documentary event series. For example, even Ahnold didn’t help:

Pretty sad that reruns of “Bob’s Burgers” on Cartoon Network/Adult Swim can beat it. It just goes to show that doom and gloom does not sell.

.04 !!! According to last week’s report, the premiere of YEARS OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY, had a microscopic 0.07.
To help make sense of just how low that rating of 0.04 is, here is some background.
The most commonly cited Nielsen results are reported in two measurements: ratings points and share, usually reported as: “ratings points/share”. As of August 27, 2012, there are an estimated 114.2 million television households in the United States, a drop of nearly 500,000 from the previous year. A single national ratings point represents one percent of the total number, or 1,142,000 households for the 2012–13 season.[2] Nielsen re-estimates the number of TV-equipped households each August for the upcoming television season.
So let’s just use that number for 2012-2013 of 1,142,000 TV households (representing a single ratings point) and multiply by 0.04. We get: 45,680 households viewing “Years of Living Dangerously”.

While nice to see this in a way, many support the CAGW movement but without interest in viewing more about global warming or seeing even documentaries of their own compatriots:
(1) Relatively boring documentaries in general tend to get far fewer views than entertainment, something which would also be so whether the topic was basket weaving, math, or almost anything without lots of eye candy.
(2) They’ve heard it before.
(3) They may care less about climate itself anyway than about wanting others to believe due to ideopolitical alignments and objectives.
Regarding (3), I’ve never actually encountered a CAGW movement supporter who actually seemed personally scared of the climate predictions, like personally moving away from the coast specifically because of believed future sea level rise or moving further north for that reason. I’ve encountered many who passionately wanted others to believe, though.
For instance, what is the usual response of a CAGW movement supporter to learning that, under their own climate sensitivity assumptions, other forms of geoengineering than CO2 cutbacks could neutralize the predicted warming for <=~ 1% the cost and with lesser biological side-effects (such as stratospheric dispersion of micron-scale reflective dust staying suspended for months at appropriate altitude, in radiative forcing neutralizing orders of magnitude more than its own mass in CO2)? Utterly zero interest in learning more, just bashing it. If you really thought the world was doomed and really wanted to avert it, wouldn't you be a little bit curious?
(Note I don't support geoengineering the planet colder, as warmer is better, but the preceding is still illustrative, as they are the ones who claim it is getting too warm).

There is an audience for doom and gloom, but not in reruns or endless remakes of the same old story laced with failed predictions. They are going to have to come up with something new, or even an old rerun that the current generation hasn’t seen yet. (Is it too soon to bring back the ozone hole, China syndrome, acid rain, or global cooling?) Oh well, they’ll think of something. They always do. For control freaks, life isn’t worth living unless they can tell others what to do. If forest fires are getting worse it’s partly due to bad policy with regard to fighting them. They don’t allow natural fires to run their course, which results in overgrowth and the massive build-up of underbrush. That’s a lot of extra fuel. They have also cut back on controlled burns for clearing brush, don’t put in fire breaks where there should be fire breaks, and human infrastructure continues to expand into fire-prone areas. These factors have nothing whatsoever to do with “global warming” or “climate change”, yet that’s what fires are blamed on because it bolsters the narrative. All this has been covered on here before.
Well, unless it goes by an abbreviation I don’t recognize, NO Showtime show made it to the top 100.
So it could still be the #1 show in Sho’s Sunday lineup.
Of course, that’s like saying Rachel Maddow is the #1 show on MessNBC.

Actually this is bad news. The spread of palm-oil cultivation in Indonesia is extremely destructive to wildlife, particularly orangutans, and is heavily tied up with political corruption. I have seen the effects in the few years I have been going there. Tying up serious science with AGW alarmism simply turns people off to both of them.

Maybe if one of the climate models had been a stripper……
Just leave it to so called environmentalists to mismanage forests for years and years through endless lawsuits and misguided legislation, burn said forests to the ground and then claim global warming did it. You’ll never see another crowd like the Sierra Club so willfully blind to the damage they have done.
It will continue until every acre of forest in California has burned. Some areas will have burned so hot and completely that they won’t recover for at least a hundred years. You can see it today driving through areas of the Complex fire in Yosemite that burned 30 years ago; no trees, just low brush.
Now we suffer the effects of the 250,000 acre Rim Fire. Sections of National forests could have been thinned and fire breaks maintained for the inevitable fire.
Global warming my ass! These forests used to be cleared naturally by fires that would consume brush and smaller trees but leave large trees unharmed. So now the fuel load is built up and, combined with the states annual 5 month dry period, is ready to explode. We’ll just wait around doing nothing until it does.
Doesn’t this result classify in the ‘It’s worse than we thought ..’ category. However, it does lead to three testable hypothesises:
1. The eco-loons will now turn up the volume of their hysterics
2. They will increase their ad homs significantly; and (most dangerously)

Having worked in the entertainment world for some time, I can tell you that if anyone blew that amount of money on a production that got that kind of audience, they’d be fired, rehired, and fired again just to make a point.
That is quite possibly the lowest rating I’ve ever seen or heard about for a new anything. Hell, it’s 85% less than Piers Morgan’s cancelled tripe on CNN, and the only watchers there were empty airport lounges.
When exactly did documentry turn into code word for propaganda? As a kid I used to watch cool documentries on arctic wolves, detailing the social structure of the pack; and stuff like that. Now every documentry I see is just strait up propaganda.

I agree with other commenters that it was boring. I expected much more from all that talent. Even with questionable content they could have made it more compelling. I generally like science fiction. I did not finish watching the first episode because there was something more entertaining that came on I wanted to see.
Perhaps Trenberth’s missing heat is hiding on Showtime, where no sees it.

The .04 is the demo audience not the total audience. Some sites use 18-49, other 25-54. I’m not sure which demo the .04 is referring to. I look at the TVBTN daily cable ratings all the time. So far the movie hasn’t made the top 100 on any day. It airs more than once a week. Just wanted to clarify before some “Doomer” has a fit.
People are getting smart. That, or sick of the whole Climate change narrative of doom & gloom. Most of us grew up with “Climate change”. Known back in the cave days as weather.
Some oldsters like me had to live through Global Cooling in school.
This is just another show extolling the virtues of embracing the Mother Goddess while promoting the Green Religion. Calling people who don’t believe their Mythology “deniers” . This group actually wants people in jail for not worshipping the Planet like they do.
Its also a bid by the UN to transfer wealth made here to other Nations who are not producers because of politics or Islam.

15 years of showing cold temperatures below normal has revealed what most people knew. When has any weatherman been accurate daily, let alone for hundreds of years.
Makes for good taxes though on an essential gas( carbon) for survival.
Tax the air is the cry. Yet on Volcano that went off not long ago spewed more pollution than a centuries of so called clean ups. In fact nothing would change if the human race ceased to exist.

According to the article, there are actually 114.2 million TV households in America, not 1.142 million. So there were actually 4.568 million households watching “Years of Living Dangerously.” Which is still an anemic number, but still…a website that looks to debunk the “scientific consensus” should make doubly sure to get its math right every time. If I were a liberal troll, I would be having a field day with this error.

If they got a rating value of 1.00, there would be 1,142,000 households viewing the show, not 114.2 million – that value would require a rating of 100, which is impossible to achieve in the TV viewing world. Your value of 4.568 million housholds would be a rating of 4. The number I posted, 45,680 households, is correct.
What I will do is clarify the language to say (in parenthesis):
So let’s just use that number for 2012-2013 of 1,142,000 TV households (representing a single ratings point) and multiply by 0.04.
