It is a 12,500 seat sports auditorium where his voice was amplified by, his slideshow enabled with, and his persona illuminated by and made comfortable with air-conditioning, all made possible by the “dirty energy” electricity generated by fossil fuels that he railed against.
The electricity that enabled Mr. Gore’s rally was courtesy of the oil burning power plants of the Hawaiian Electric Company, such as the HECO power plant at Kahe Point in West Oahu seen at right.
Gore himself once said in a crackpot statement: “there is no such thing as ethical oil.”
Yes, fossil fuels in the form of “dirty oil” enabled Gore to tell these people all about why they shouldn’t be using it.

The “barriers” to doing something about climate change are business and political interests that profit off of fossil fuels — “dirty energy that causes dirty weather.” He compared fake science from polluters stating that humans are not to blame for the climate to tobacco companies that used to hire actors to play doctors who denied cigarettes were dangerous.
“That’s immoral, unethical and despicable,” he said of both.

Both the IPCC and Nature say there is no link between climate change aka global warming and severe weather, and so it follows about Gore’s “dirty energy” claim.
From Chapter 4 of the IPCC SREX report ( IPCC Special Report on Extremes PDF):
- “There is medium evidence and high agreement that long-term trends in normalized losses have not been attributed to natural or anthropogenic climate change”
- “The statement about the absence of trends in impacts attributable to natural or anthropogenic climate change holds for tropical and extratropical storms and tornados”
- “The absence of an attributable climate change signal in losses also holds for flood losses”
Nature’s editorial last year dashing alarmist hopes of linking extreme weather events to global warming saying:
Better models are needed before exceptional events can be reliably linked to global warming.
If Hawaii is like the rest of the United States, then Mr. Gore just insulted not only those of us who have technically based doubts about his claims, but a good portion of the average population that doesn’t agree with him according to Gallup polling.

I have noticed that extreme weather is more visible. In the 1970s when they had large typhoons that dwarf today’s, we didn’t get live footage of each on TV or on computers. My telephone didn’t show me typhoon Tip.

I once lived next door to a senior wind farm engineer who had drunk the cool-aid on global warming (or claimed he had).

Dodgy geezer as an ex patriot I once complained about the cost of coal! Five pounds a hundred weight. But in Australia we generally don’t need to heat homes much, but in various places, like where I live, wood smoke has been banned in urban areas, and the only alternative is oil, gas or electricity heating.
But – I am a green, and mean. Remembering how cold it was in UK, I use an electric blanket and my son and I don warm underwear and a wooly jumper. And we use the sun to warm the house during day time. We have acclimatised well actually and live on an elevated position of a valley when the frost and cold go downwards. The only time we put on a two bar electric fire and put my whippet in a sheepskin coat is when we have visitors who come from warmer climes, and also my champion whippet has hardly any fat or coat to keep her warm. We usually say as whippet owners, if you can’t find your whippet look under the doona. Summer or winter.
The thing is in Australia and particularly on the Northern Tablelands of NSW where I live, the day time temps can fluctuate greatly from day time to night time, sometimes 20C in winter. But as soon as the sun comes up if it does, the temps warm up. In some areas in Armidale the temps do drop to minus 15 on occasions, but that is rare, and at most it gets to minus 3C where I am situated. If it gets that hot during the day, rarely over 30 C, we leave off clothes, drink a lot of H20 or beer, and have cold showers. If that doesn’t work we turn on the electric fans, making sure we cover our tummys in the night. Gosh people who have not been able to acclimatise must be very sad. You adapt biologically and environmentally.

I had a government sponsored energy assessor come around and left me some low voltage long lived globes, I had a special shower cap, and he left me a shower timer that didn’t work, and special adapter with multiple plugs, that didn’t work. He looked at my last bill and said, you water usage is high, maybe you should change to solar. My hot water usage was only $73.00 for 12 weeks, and some was off peak and cheaper rates. Gosh, if I paid out 5,000 dollars on only hot water solar heating, or on lighting, it would be a waste of time, even with subsidies.
Anyway getting off the topic, but agree my electricity bill has increased somewhat, and luckily, the Salvation Army through government handouts, do give pensioners $500 a year in vouchers to help pay for it. I take full advantage of that.

I am not going to be harmed by global warming because I will be dead within 20 years. However that does not mean that I should not consider the implications of global warming. The issue with global warming activism is that the science is being pushed beyond its limits to fit green political agendas. The same thing can be said about the opposition to the AGW green agenda. Much of this is shaped by opposing political agendas.
We have to accept that all science is political but it would be nice if, for once, we could set the politics aside and address this issue directly. I wish that scientists would stop trying to be politicians and that politicians would stop pretending that they had even a faint understanding of the science.

The growth is installations has been a result of massive feed-in tarif and other subsidies, that above all serve to increase consumer credit in the form of loans paid for by the said public subsidies. Yet more tax-payer’s money to boost the banking sector , dressed up as “green”.

However, the subsidises to the solar industry have managed to establish the sector by providing sufficient volume in the market.
In Europe, I can get quoted 66 euro-cent/watt for quality Sharp PV panels. ( about 90c USD / watt ) ex-tax. Thin-film panels are about 50 euro-cent/watt
The latter panels are about 44 euro / m2 simply viewed as a covering material.
If that is used as an element of the roof covering (as is required in France to get the feed-in) it becomes a serious economic proposition.
In America we have a tradition which allows all, including the village idiot, to assume the soap box in the town square. Al’s problem is that he has spouted so many lies that he can’t rise to legitimate debate. In short…let him go on. He is more useful that way.

No one will be harmed by “global warming”, though humanity itself is being threatened by the CAGW ideology. The “global warming” threat is nothing but a bogeyman, and the “science” behind it nothing but a sham driven by politics, greed, and sheer stupidity. It is the biggest, most destructive lie in human history that our CO2 is somehow harming the climate. Far from it, in fact it is just the opposite; our CO2 is actually benefiting the environment, through an enhanced greening effect.
In all likelihood, we will see, instead of warming, a marked cooling within 20 years. For humanity’s sake, we had best hope that cooling doesn’t extend much beyond 20 or 30 years. Because it is, in fact, cooling that potentially could cause us the greatest harm.

My politics has been developed by my scientific observations. By what works in the real world. I didn’t decide my politics would be in favor of free markets then dismiss global warming concern because it favored less government intervention. I want what’s best for the world, and I seek the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth no matter where it leads. I don’t dismiss global warming because of my politics.
I dismiss global warming because: I am a highly educated scientist. I am very smart, very good at figuring things out, have studied electrical engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, all prior to beginning my study of climate science. Math alone I put in 2000 hours of study recently, every single day for years. The other subjects have many thousands of hours of study over 3 decades beyond high school. And speaking of high school, I graduated with honors (in the top 10%) and got an award for best draftsperson in the school. I was a natural at it. I didn’t even touch a working computer until I got out of high school (though I had been inside of one, along with my class mates, during a tour of UBC near Vancouver) and here I am a computer scientist working on some of the most complex problems that computers might be able to solve.
I was appalled at what I found when I began my research into climate science. First, there is so much information out there but the media had kept most of it hidden from me. The media and government had selectively cherry picked and left out information.
I have so much more to say, but I’ll leave it for now, but finish with this… Don’t tell me my view on climate science is shaped by my politics. It is not.

I liken this type of event as the CAGW equivalent to a revival meeting, with Al Gore as the evangelist preacher preaching, at intervals, fire and brimestone to whip up fear and guilt, then salvation through service in the CAGW industry as well as helping to “spread the message”. This is as nonsensical as anything I’ve ever read before. High demand for a product increases prices, it doesn’t lower them. If prices are declining it’s because too much of the product is made and too little is being sold.
Arguing with Algore re: global warming / climate change, somewhat misses the point. Algore is and always has been a man in search of a great mission. Look up “Agenda 21”, you’ll then understand where Algore is coming from, global warming / climate change is but the first act.
Algore is one of the self described, “global elite”, that have great plans for you and I, and they will say or do anything to accomplish these missions, as his history has proven. The only way to expose, beat, and create a deterrent for alleged intentionally alarmist “gravy train” science is to bring a RICO claim. The CAGW movement reminds me so much of the propaganda that permeated society in George Orwell’s book “1984”. IIRC, they would demonize and wage war against one nation for a while, then switch to demonizing and waging war against another nation for a while, as it suited the wishes of the rulers.
I keep expecting the CAGW crew to switch gears and start trying to rabble-rouse about the coming ice age. They would have better luck selling that story these days. People actually have been dying from being unable to cope with cooler-than-expected temperatures and heavier-than-expected precipitation events.
In an ice age, there is more extreme swinging of weather than under warm climate conditions. Isn’t that what we have been seeing?
I mean, if the name of the game is to destroy big chunks of the economy just so as to have the opportunity of making money building it up again, isn’t it just as profitable to beat one dead horse as it is to beat another? At least beat a dead horse that isn’t as patently false as CAGW has proven to be!
And, yes, I remember that they already tried the ice age scare in the 1970s. They blamed that on fossil fuel usage, too.

Of all people to talk down to about petro, he’s chosen the most dependent. If the greens are successful at destroying the economies of scale that make petro fuel possible Hawaii will become a ghost island chain. Nothing enters or leaves Hawaii without petroenergy. It would be interesting to see a cost of living chart for Hawaii if petroenergy is globally banned/taxed out of affordability.
This would be an analysis of the impact of selectively destroying economies of scale on interdependent products such as gas, naptha, gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil (pay attention, America), diesel fuel, bunkers, and fertilizers. In the list there are critical energy sources that fuel transportation of people, goods, food, and trash across town and around the world. No fuel, no farms. No cheap fuel, no cheap food. They create affordable electricity that lights our world, cooks our food, and warms our homes. Air conditioning has expanded our living space to include climate zones that are otherwise unlivable. Modern life is impossible without these fuels. But what to do with the by-products of creating these essential fuels if they are banned/taxed out of reach? How will economies of scale affect creation of critical fuels when “consumer” fuels such as gasoline and heating oil are unaffordable?

Bankruptcies like this are common in the development of major technologies. This doesn’t mean that they will not transform the world. Instead they create the demand that drives the innovation that will lower costs

I’m old enough to remember the Global Cooling crowd back in the early to mid-1970’s. According to them we were going to go through another Ice Age. That theory died out, because they didn’t figure out a way to make billions of dollars off their theory. Then came the Global Warming alarmists, that lasted awhile, until the evidence showed that the climate had actually stopped warming, and was staying the same or even cooling a bit. Then they switched to Climate Change, that covers it all, if it is warmer than usually one summer, they can claim that they are right, and if it is colder one winter, they are also right. Gore, himself, built a huge seaside home, yet he says that we’ll soon see the sea level rise and flood the coastal regions. If that were true, would he really build a house there?
Gallup’s poll numbers reveal SOME of the skepticism about the global warming scare, but their poll still begs the question:

Huh? Where do you get that? To him, oil and coal are evil and “dirty”, create “dirty weather”, and our use of them “threatens the planet”. “Sustainable energy” is just code for non-fossil fuel energy, or “green” energy, which is both expensive and unreliable, as well as creating their own set of environmental problems.
Hawaii gets 92% of its electricity from combustion of fuels (fossil fuels – gas and coal – 89%, and solid waste, 3%). Another 3% comes from geothermal on the Big Island, wind adds 4%, so all the rest including solar comes to 1%. On Oahu where Gore spoke, only 1% is not generated by burning fossil fuels or solid waste. Gore went to the right place to preach being “green” to the faithful.
What would family friend Armand Hammer have to say about no such thing as ethical oil? If Hammer were alive today, he’d be turning over in his grave, I’m sure. But perhaps Armie remembers how former tobacco farmer Albert Gore, Jr,, railed against Big Tobacco when it was politically advantageous to do so.

When I first started on the global warming blogs and comments Warmists’ first line of attack was that I could not produce peer reviewed references to back my claims. So I found them and kept them on my computer under various files for future use. If you want to defend yourselves against Warmists you must arm yourselves with ammunition from the peer review. Of course there are instances where peer review is irrelevant or does not exist such as calling out a hypocrite.

Let’s leave Al Gore aside and look at why he was there. He was one small, but highly visible, part of a the wide ranging, aggressive, long-running state-wide “sustainability” program embraced by the State of Hawaii and its residents. Hawaiian archipelago is the most remote place on Earth – more distant from any other port or landfall that any other populated area. Everything that cannot be grown/made in HI is imported. For a high-tech economy that takes a lot of energy. So, energy generation is a big focus: Gov Lingle (R), the former governor, decreed the State of Hawaii would become independent of 70% of the external fuel (oil/coal) needed for electrical energy generation by 2030. Emphasis was placed on solar, wind, biomass and geothermal, as well as wave and anything else that might work. You can go the State of Hawaii web pages and read about it. The electric company, HECO, has developed a web page to show how much electrical energy is produced daily (http://www.hawaiianelectric.com/images/OahuReWatch.png) and where it comes from (mostly wind and solar). It is interesting to note that the solar takes a bite out of the 8am to 4pm energy needs for Honolulu. That saves a lot of imported oil.
The people of Hawaii fully embrace sustainability, forward looking preparation in case of calamity, and work very hard to remove the worst of the thin-card supports to its economy and livelihood. The Native Hawaiians new this inherently. Those that move here learn quickly whether due to a dock strike or a hurricane. And those who own the multimillion dollar homes and billion dollar hotels on the beach are watching climate change carefully as the beaches are noticeably beginning to change, most for the worse. Al Gore was greeted enthusiastically by the audience in the arena, as well as most of the residents of Hawaii, because his underlying message, sustainability for future generations, resonates with those who live in the shadow of unsustainability daily.
Tying global warming to a *specific* extreme weather event is different from saying global warming causes increased risk of such events.
