Al Gore dupes 9000 people in Hawaii, insults the rest

Climate change is real and getting worse, Al Gore told the packed audience. Image: PF Bentley/Civil Beat

The story below is from from Honolulu Civil Beat, who covered a political rally on April 15th by Gore to 9000 people in Honolulu’s Stan Sheriff Center. It is a 12,500 seat sports auditorium where his voice was amplified by, his slideshow enabled with, and his persona illuminated by and made comfortable with air-conditioning, all made possible by the “dirty energy” electricity generated by fossil fuels that he railed against.

HECO power plant at Kahe Point, powered by oil.

The electricity that enabled Mr. Gore’s rally was courtesy of the oil burning power plants of the Hawaiian Electric Company, such as the HECO power plant at Kahe Point in West Oahu seen at right.

Gore himself once said in a crackpot statement: “there is no such thing as ethical oil.”

Yes, fossil fuels in the form of “dirty oil” enabled Gore to tell these people all about why they shouldn’t be using it.

But, that’s just the start of Mr. Gore’s hypocrisy. Read on.

=============================================================

Al Gore on Climate Change: ‘We Are Going to Win This Thing’

“The way we have to respond to this is going to require a set of changes that are beyond our routine,” he said, his voice growing to a shout. “I know that we are capable of that. Our way of life is at stake, our grandchildren are at stake, the future of civilization is at stake.”

But Gore cited two “game changers” in recent years that will help. The first is the growing realization from even climate-change deniers that something seems to be strange with the weather. The second is the exponential growth in photovoltaic solar panels, driven largely by consumer demand for lower prices.

The “barriers” to doing something about climate change are business and political interests that profit off of fossil fuels — “dirty energy that causes dirty weather.” He compared fake science from polluters stating that humans are not to blame for the climate to tobacco companies that used to hire actors to play doctors who denied cigarettes were dangerous.

“That’s immoral, unethical and despicable,” he said of both.

Full story here: http://www.civilbeat.com/articles/2014/04/15/21808-al-gore-on-climate-change-we-are-going-to-win-this-thing/

=============================================================

What. A. Liar.

Both the IPCC and Nature say there is no link between climate change aka global warming and severe weather, and so it follows about Gore’s “dirty energy” claim.

From Chapter 4 of the IPCC SREX report ( IPCC Special Report on Extremes PDF):

  • “There is medium evidence and high agreement that long-term trends in normalized losses have not been attributed to natural or anthropogenic climate change”
  • “The statement about the absence of trends in impacts attributable to natural or anthropogenic climate change holds for tropical and extratropical storms and tornados”
  • “The absence of an attributable climate change signal in losses also holds for flood losses”

Nature’s editorial last year dashing alarmist hopes of linking extreme weather events to global warming saying:

Better models are needed before exceptional events can be reliably linked to global warming.

If Hawaii is like the rest of the United States, then Mr. Gore just insulted not only those of us who have technically based doubts about his claims, but a good portion of the average population that doesn’t agree with him according to Gallup polling.

worrying_topics

Environmental worries seem to be a thing of the past:

Americans' Worry About the Environment Over Time

Source: http://www.gallup.com/poll/167843/climate-change-not-top-worry.aspx

And here’s what Gallup discovered about how people view global warming:

Source: http://www.gallup.com/poll/167879/not-global-warming-serious-threat.aspx

And Yale gets similar results:

  • About half of Americans (51%) say they are “somewhat” (38%) or “very worried” (15%) about global warming.

  • Fewer than half of Americans (38%) believe they personally will be harmed a “moderate amount” or a “great deal” by global warming. By contrast, majorities believe that global warming will harm future generations of people (65%) and plant and animal species (65%).

“Our findings show that the public’s understanding of global warming’s reality, causes, and risks has not improved and has, in at least one important respect, gone in the wrong direction over the past year,” said researcher Ed Maibach, PhD, of George Mason University. “Better public communication about global warming is needed now more than ever.”

So, when Al Gore says ‘We Are Going to Win This Thing’, he’s just preaching to the few that still believe him. Everybody else has moved on.

So while Mr. Gore calls climate skeptics (which seems to be the majority of the population these days) ‘Immoral, Unethical and Despicable’ I take comfort in the fact that unlike Mr. Gore, at least we don’t take Al Jazeera & tobacco money to pad our lifestyle while telling others how to live theirs.

An enormous federal excise tax should be applied to all tourism proceeds in Hawaii.
Other than those tourists who arrive in the islands by sail, paddle, drift raft, or other “carbon-neutral” methods of travel.
It’s for the sake of the planet. Surely the permanent residents of Hawaii will agree.

Who are these d@niers of whom you speak? co2 is a weak GHG and this has been measured accurately for 150 years. Has anybody noticed any change in weather though? 0.3C is about the variation between different beaches in Sydney. I haven’t noticed more cyclones in Manly than Cronulla or droughts endemic to one.
I have noticed that extreme weather is more visible. In the 1970s when they had large typhoons that dwarf today’s, we didn’t get live footage of each on TV or on computers. My telephone didn’t show me typhoon Tip.

Gore still peddling his doomsday cult? Funnily not one of his doomsday predictions have been right. Still, people like a trier.
Al Gore On the 13th of December 2008,: “Entire north polar ice cap will be gone in 5 years”
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2008/12/14/gore-entire-north-polar-ice-cap-will-be-gone-in-5-years/
Al how much does one have to pay to be one of the saved? Do you give a money back guarantee if not completely satisfied?

What would the psychologists make of someone who keeps making bogus predictions? Would that be ‘crying wolf’? which is classed as a type 1 error
“A type I error, also known as an error of the first kind, occurs when the null hypothesis (H0) is true, but is rejected. It is asserting something that is absent, a false hit. A type I error may be compared with a so-called false positive (a result that indicates that a given condition is present when it actually is not present) in tests where a single condition is tested for. Type I errors are philosophically a focus of skepticism and Occam’s razor. A Type I error occurs when we believe a falsehood.[4] In terms of folk tales, an investigator may be “crying wolf” without a wolf in sight (raising a false alarm) (H0: no wolf).” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_positive#Type_I_error
Thus it is rational and in science valid [ie not ‘a conspiracy’] for others to become skeptical about the sayings of someone who demonstrates they are crying wolf.

http://www.bailii.org/cgi-bin/markup.cgi?doc=/ew/cases/EWHC/Admin/2007/2288.html&query=title+%28+dimmock+%29&method=boolean
“It is built round the charismatic presence of the ex-Vice-President, Al Gore, whose crusade it now is to persuade the world of the dangers of climate change caused by global warming. It is now common ground that it is not simply a science film – although it is clear that it is based substantially on scientific research and opinion – but that it is a political film, albeit of course not party political.”
“so that the Armageddon scenario he predicts, insofar as it suggests that sea level rises of 7 metres might occur in the immediate future, is not in line with the scientific consensus.”
“Mr Gore states “that’s why the citizens of these Pacific nations have all had to evacuate to New Zealand”. There is no evidence of any such evacuation having yet happened. ”
“Mr Gore shows two graphs relating to a period of 650,000 years, one showing rise in CO2 and one showing rise in temperature, and asserts (by ridiculing the opposite view) that they show an exact fit. Although there is general scientific agreement that there is a connection, the two graphs do not establish what Mr Gore asserts. ”
“it is common ground that, the scientific consensus is that it cannot be established that the recession of snows on Mt Kilimanjaro is mainly attributable to human-induced climate change. ”
and it goes on with more examples
so he crys wolf.. To be a skeptic is rational.

I once lived next door to a senior wind farm engineer who had drunk the cool-aid on global warming (or claimed he had).
So I asked “given that you think CO2 emissions are causing dangerous warming, how can you justify owning a motorboat? Surely that qualifies as an unnecessary source of CO2, if anything does?”.
He replied that he thought it was OK, because the good he did in his day to day job more than made up for the luxuries he allowed himself.
I wonder if this is what Al Gore tells himself whenever he steps onto an airliner?

Yup! He did say that. So peoples in Pacific (Thay ocean was named such for a reason) nations have to migrate to New Zealand because of a minute risk of sea level rise/climate change to a country with significant risk of volcano erruptions and earth quakes. How many people died in Pacific nations due to sea level rise/climate change? Zero! How many people died in the Christchurch earth quake 2011? 185! Al Gore’s “best” advice as usual.

Dodgy geezer as an ex patriot I once complained about the cost of coal! Five pounds a hundred weight. But in Australia we generally don’t need to heat homes much, but in various places, like where I live, wood smoke has been banned in urban areas, and the only alternative is oil, gas or electricity heating.
But – I am a green, and mean. Remembering how cold it was in UK, I use an electric blanket and my son and I don warm underwear and a wooly jumper. And we use the sun to warm the house during day time. We have acclimatised well actually and live on an elevated position of a valley when the frost and cold go downwards. The only time we put on a two bar electric fire and put my whippet in a sheepskin coat is when we have visitors who come from warmer climes, and also my champion whippet has hardly any fat or coat to keep her warm. We usually say as whippet owners, if you can’t find your whippet look under the doona. Summer or winter.
The thing is in Australia and particularly on the Northern Tablelands of NSW where I live, the day time temps can fluctuate greatly from day time to night time, sometimes 20C in winter. But as soon as the sun comes up if it does, the temps warm up. In some areas in Armidale the temps do drop to minus 15 on occasions, but that is rare, and at most it gets to minus 3C where I am situated. If it gets that hot during the day, rarely over 30 C, we leave off clothes, drink a lot of H20 or beer, and have cold showers. If that doesn’t work we turn on the electric fans, making sure we cover our tummys in the night. Gosh people who have not been able to acclimatise must be very sad. You adapt biologically and environmentally.

April 18, 2014 2:31 am

I had a government sponsored energy assessor come around and left me some low voltage long lived globes, I had a special shower cap, and he left me a shower timer that didn’t work, and special adapter with multiple plugs, that didn’t work. He looked at my last bill and said, you water usage is high, maybe you should change to solar. My hot water usage was only $73.00 for 12 weeks, and some was off peak and cheaper rates. Gosh, if I paid out 5,000 dollars on only hot water solar heating, or on lighting, it would be a waste of time, even with subsidies.
Anyway getting off the topic, but agree my electricity bill has increased somewhat, and luckily, the Salvation Army through government handouts, do give pensioners $500 a year in vouchers to help pay for it. I take full advantage of that.

Please, how can this pathetic person even have a voice? Is he so filled with hatred after his election bid that he lost.? So that he is willing to derail every one’s else’s lives? He should be put in shackles!. I really mean this, this guy is sick !! The CO scam has done more damage to our world than any tornado, cyclone, hurricane and storm surge. I know most readers know about the thousands of Brits that were killed during the last 2 winters because of the lack of coal to heat their own homes but this is becoming sickening .
And btw this squeezing of heating supplies for the elderly is happening in the USA and other countries as well. But the shutting down off the coal industry in the UK is criminal. I hope one day the politicians that supported it will go to jail! I am sorry for the rant Anthony and sorry guys, I know this is not the forum but I had to let go . I have family in the EU they are suffering because of these asinine politicians., you know the ones that have secretaries , cabs, planes, etc just waiting for them, add in the free meals and I can go on. The 9,000 that went to hear Al Gore preach another sermon on the Magical Molecule and how we have to fight it appealed to the morons whose ancestors put innocent women to death as witches during the little ice age for making it too cold. Little changes. The reasoning ability of the many people is damn near nil.
It was far warmer during the medieval warming period and was far colder during the little ice age than it is now. CO2 had nothing to do with those two swings in average global temperature. If it continues to warm as the climate rebounds from the horribly cold little ice age then the climate scientists witch doctors will yell that we are going to fry/drown. Idiots. Con-men. Fraudsters. Deluded fools.

“… unlike Mr. Gore, at least we don’t take Al Jazeera & tobacco money to pad our lifestyle while telling others how to live theirs.”
Anthony, presumably this point about Al Jazeera is that it’s oil funded, hence more hypocrisy from Gore. It would be good to make that clear with a phrase like ” don’t take Al Jazeera oil money” , so that it cannot be misread as meaning taking money from “terrorist supporting A-rabs. ”
I’m sure that’s not the way you meant it but since some on the right in US, who have probably never even seen an AJ newscast, do think like that, it may be a good idea to make your point more explicitly.

I am not going to be harmed by global warming because I will be dead within 20 years. However that does not mean that I should not consider the implications of global warming. The issue with global warming activism is that the science is being pushed beyond its limits to fit green political agendas. The same thing can be said about the opposition to the AGW green agenda. Much of this is shaped by opposing political agendas.
We have to accept that all science is political but it would be nice if, for once, we could set the politics aside and address this issue directly. I wish that scientists would stop trying to be politicians and that politicians would stop pretending that they had even a faint understanding of the science.

“The second is the exponential growth in photovoltaic solar panels, driven largely by consumer demand for lower prices.”
Absolute bollocks.
The growth is installations has been a result of massive feed-in tarif and other subsidies, that above all serve to increase consumer credit in the form of loans paid for by the said public subsidies. Yet more tax-payer’s money to boost the banking sector , dressed up as “green”.
Green as in green-backs rather than as in ecology.
However, the subsidises to the solar industry have managed to establish the sector by providing sufficient volume in the market.
In Europe, I can get quoted 66 euro-cent/watt for quality Sharp PV panels. ( about 90c USD / watt ) ex-tax. Thin-film panels are about 50 euro-cent/watt
The latter panels are about 44 euro / m2 simply viewed as a covering material.
If that is used as an element of the roof covering (as is required in France to get the feed-in) it becomes a serious economic proposition.

No one will be harmed by “global warming”, though humanity itself is being threatened by the CAGW ideology. The “global warming” threat is nothing but a bogeyman, and the “science” behind it nothing but a sham driven by politics, greed, and sheer stupidity. It is the biggest, most destructive lie in human history that our CO2 is somehow harming the climate. Far from it, in fact it is just the opposite; our CO2 is actually benefiting the environment, through an enhanced greening effect.
In all likelihood, we will see, instead of warming, a marked cooling within 20 years. For humanity’s sake, we had best hope that cooling doesn’t extend much beyond 20 or 30 years. Because it is, in fact, cooling that potentially could cause us the greatest harm.

My politics has been developed by my scientific observations. By what works in the real world. I didn’t decide my politics would be in favor of free markets then dismiss global warming concern because it favored less government intervention. I want what’s best for the world, and I seek the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth no matter where it leads. I don’t dismiss global warming because of my politics.
I dismiss global warming because: I am a highly educated scientist. I am very smart, very good at figuring things out, have studied electrical engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, all prior to beginning my study of climate science. Math alone I put in 2000 hours of study recently, every single day for years. The other subjects have many thousands of hours of study over 3 decades beyond high school. And speaking of high school, I graduated with honors (in the top 10%) and got an award for best draftsperson in the school. I was a natural at it. I didn’t even touch a working computer until I got out of high school (though I had been inside of one, along with my class mates, during a tour of UBC near Vancouver) and here I am a computer scientist working on some of the most complex problems that computers might be able to solve.
I was appalled at what I found when I began my research into climate science. First, there is so much information out there but the media had kept most of it hidden from me. The media and government had selectively cherry picked and left out information.
I have so much more to say, but I’ll leave it for now, but finish with this… Don’t tell me my view on climate science is shaped by my politics. It is not.

I liken this type of event as the CAGW equivalent to a revival meeting, with Al Gore as the evangelist preacher preaching, at intervals, fire and brimestone to whip up fear and guilt, then salvation through service in the CAGW industry as well as helping to “spread the message”. The goal is to whip the crowd up into a fervorous evangelism, and naturally, that requires the mass-delusion that they are “winning”, when in fact the opposite is true. Al Gore, who has profited immensely from the CAGW industry makes Bernie Madoff look like a choir boy.

About HECo. on Maui; there are about a dozen gasturbines around Maui. One site, at Kihei, is very near their burgeoning windfarm but well hidden from view by carefully planted trees. This is as nonsensical as anything I’ve ever read before. High demand for a product increases prices, it doesn’t lower them. If prices are declining it’s because too much of the product is made and too little is being sold.

Arguing with Algore re: global warming / climate change, somewhat misses the point. Algore is and always has been a man in search of a great mission. Look up “Agenda 21”, you’ll then understand where Algore is coming from, global warming / climate change is but the first act.
Algore is one of the self described, “global elite”, that have great plans for you and I, and they will say or do anything to accomplish these missions, as his history has proven. Al has enriched himself beyond anything that even he could have imagined. He has done this with half truths and exaggeration to a willing congregation of followers of his new religion and “That’s immoral, unethical and despicable,”
Had he been a TV preacher he would have been exposed long ago and done the walk of shame. So rather that trying to point out to all of these climate nuts that 2+2 doesn’t equal 6, the time should be spent on WHY the’re doing what they do. Scientists, government leaders and green energy concerns each see the part of the plan that benefits them and climb on board. In and of its self it seems harmless but taken as a whole it’s a disaster. Algore is like the Jim Jones of the “Church of Green Energy and Sustainable Development”.

Not that long ago, say 4 or 5 years ago, a thread such as this one attacking their hero would have been thread-bombed by froth-at-the-mouth gorebot trolls. What’s happened? Yes, they did get their bottoms spanked and they were sent off crying, but that never used to stop them before.
Where have all the gorebots gone? Long time passing?
Send in the trolls. There must be trolls.

My favorite example of the man’s hypocrisy comes from the Inconvenient Truth. He stands on the family farm, telling of the sad death of his sister from lung cancer “But then, she was a smoker, you know!” Pause to dry the rheumy eye, and the camera pans out, to reveal that Gore is standing in front of a wooden shed. It is of a particular and unique design – specifically, it is a tobacco-drying shed. The family fortunes were made in part from growing the weed.

Fat Albert says:
“The `barriers’ to doing something about climate change are business and political interests that profit off of fossil fuels — `dirty energy that causes dirty weather’.”
Fat Albert sits on the Board of Directors of Apple Inc., a company that owes a material amount of its “profits” to the ready availability of “fossil fuels – dirty energy …”.
Fat Albert has profited immensely from his BOD role at Apple. As of February 1, 2014, he owns 62,523 shares of Apple currently valued at over $32.8 million … http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ir?s=AAPL+Insider+Roster
One wonders: why does Apple keep this utter and complete hypocrite on its BOD?

The only way to expose, beat, and create a deterrent for alleged intentionally alarmist “gravy train” science is to bring a RICO claim. Not even a “trade secret” argument will be able to withstand that. Discovery in a judicial forum conducive to the side of real science will get you the emails, data, etc needed to support a RICO claim. Steyn’s claims are fascinating, but child’s play. RICO brings the pain, and the sad part is, IMO, once one gets past the standing argument (to bring a claim), I think you get to a jury. File it after the 2014 mid terms (I’m talking to you, Steyn).

“… the exponential growth in photovoltaic solar panels, driven largely by consumer demand for lower prices.”
This is as nonsensical as anything I’ve ever read before. High demand for a product increases prices, it doesn’t lower them. If prices are declining it’s because too much of the product is made and too little is being sold.

Not necessarily. Hard drives are always in high demand, yet prices have dropped dramatically over the years. A 1gb hard drive I purchased in 1991 went for $2500, the following year the exact same model went for $1500. I recently purchased a 4tb drive for less than $150. Competition and innovation is what drives prices, no so much demand.

Wonder if Al covered these Bible passages while in his short stay at Divinity School
Deuteronomy 18:20-22 – But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.’ And if you say in your heart, ‘How may we know the word that the Lord has not spoken?’— when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him.
Revelation 21:8 – But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
Leviticus 20:27 – “A man or a woman who is a medium or a necromancer shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones; their blood shall be upon them.”

Might explain why of the two biggest solar panel makers in China, one is bankrupt and the other only had interest on a bond issued by Shanghai Chaori Solar Energy Science & Technology a Chinese maker of solar cells, falls due. That payment, as of this moment, will not be made, following an announcement made late on Tuesday that it will not be able to repay the CNY89.8 million interest on a CNY1 billion bond issued on March 7th 2012.
FT reports: The company has until March 7th to repay the interest, charged at an annual 8.98 per cent, the company said in a statement. “Due to various uncontrollable factors, until now the company has only raised Rmb 4m to pay the interest,” it said in the statement.Trading in the Chaori bond, given a CCC junk rating, was suspended last July because the company suffered two consecutive years of losses. The company had a further RMB1.37bn loss in 2013, according to the results it posted on the exchange.
Just pointing out the obvious here, but how bad must things be for the company to be on the verge of default not due to principal repayment but because two years after issuing a bond, it only has 4% in cash on hand for the intended coupon payment?

The CAGW movement reminds me so much of the propaganda that permeated society in George Orwell’s book “1984”. IIRC, they would demonize and wage war against one nation for a while, then switch to demonizing and waging war against another nation for a while, as it suited the wishes of the rulers.
I keep expecting the CAGW crew to switch gears and start trying to rabble-rouse about the coming ice age. They would have better luck selling that story these days. People actually have been dying from being unable to cope with cooler-than-expected temperatures and heavier-than-expected precipitation events.
In an ice age, there is more extreme swinging of weather than under warm climate conditions. Isn’t that what we have been seeing?
I mean, if the name of the game is to destroy big chunks of the economy just so as to have the opportunity of making money building it up again, isn’t it just as profitable to beat one dead horse as it is to beat another? At least beat a dead horse that isn’t as patently false as CAGW has proven to be!
And, yes, I remember that they already tried the ice age scare in the 1970s. They blamed that on fossil fuel usage, too.
They are shameless, apparently. CAGW as a cause is really threadbear. I think they need to try something new. Is that too much to ask?

Of all people to talk down to about petro, he’s chosen the most dependent. If the greens are successful at destroying the economies of scale that make petro fuel possible Hawaii will become a ghost island chain. Nothing enters or leaves Hawaii without petroenergy. It would be interesting to see a cost of living chart for Hawaii if petroenergy is globally banned/taxed out of affordability.
This would be an analysis of the impact of selectively destroying economies of scale on interdependent products such as gas, naptha, gasoline, kerosene, fuel oil (pay attention, America), diesel fuel, bunkers, and fertilizers. In the list there are critical energy sources that fuel transportation of people, goods, food, and trash across town and around the world. No fuel, no farms. No cheap fuel, no cheap food. They create affordable electricity that lights our world, cooks our food, and warms our homes. Air conditioning has expanded our living space to include climate zones that are otherwise unlivable. Modern life is impossible without these fuels. But what to do with the by-products of creating these essential fuels if they are banned/taxed out of reach? How will economies of scale affect creation of critical fuels when “consumer” fuels such as gasoline and heating oil are unaffordable?

I’m old enough to remember the Global Cooling crowd back in the early to mid-1970’s. According to them we were going to go through another Ice Age. That theory died out, because they didn’t figure out a way to make billions of dollars off their theory. Then came the Global Warming alarmists, that lasted awhile, until the evidence showed that the climate had actually stopped warming, and was staying the same or even cooling a bit. Then they switched to Climate Change, that covers it all, if it is warmer than usually one summer, they can claim that they are right, and if it is colder one winter, they are also right. Gore, himself, built a huge seaside home, yet he says that we’ll soon see the sea level rise and flood the coastal regions. If that were true, would he really build a house there?

Gallup’s poll numbers reveal SOME of the skepticism about the global warming scare, but their poll still begs the question:

Expectations that global warming will seriously threaten one’s way of life, by age group

What global warming? Here’s the poll question I’d like to see:

Do you think global temperature over the next century is more likely to rise, or fall?

Especially it would be nice to see the scientists answer this (ideally on the record, but that would bias the results, since revealing skeptical views can be highly damaging to career prospects not just for climatologists but for ANYONE in academia or the media or in any of the Democrat-dominated information industries).
The other question that should be included in any climate poll is agreement with the new official “consensus” view as asserted in AR5:

Do you think that the increase in greenhouse gases from human activity caused most of the warming since 1950?

Legates’ survey found almost no explicit support for this position in the scientific literature (.5% of the abstracts that were rated by Cook et al. as showing 97% support for the IPCC “consensus”), but that is looking only at a very select group in a very select way. This should be the general poll question that everyone gets asked.
Sawdust pudding says: the planet is going to cool over the next century and CO2 was a minor player in what little warming did occur over the second half of the 20th century.

Huh? Where do you get that? To him, oil and coal are evil and “dirty”, create “dirty weather”, and our use of them “threatens the planet”. “Sustainable energy” is just code for non-fossil fuel energy, or “green” energy, which is both expensive and unreliable, as well as creating their own set of environmental problems.

Hawaii gets 92% of its electricity from combustion of fuels (fossil fuels – gas and coal – 89%, and solid waste, 3%). Another 3% comes from geothermal on the Big Island, wind adds 4%, so all the rest including solar comes to 1%. On Oahu where Gore spoke, only 1% is not generated by burning fossil fuels or solid waste. Gore went to the right place to preach being “green” to the faithful.

When I first started on the global warming blogs and comments Warmists’ first line of attack was that I could not produce peer reviewed references to back my claims. So I found them and kept them on my computer under various files for future use. If you want to defend yourselves against Warmists you must arm yourselves with ammunition from the peer review. Of course there are instances where peer review is irrelevant or does not exist such as calling out a hypocrite.
When I first started on the global warming blogs and comments Warmists’ first line of attack was that I was referring to the weather and not the climate. There is no defense now because that is what they are now doing – weather and local events are now signs of global climate change caused by man. This has been a rapid 360 degree turn of events, a sure sign of desperation.

I have a simple question. What is the minimum period that the IPCC defines as climate for the purposes of its reports? The quote below does not tell me what THEY define as the minimum period for climate. It simply refers to the WMO’s classical definition.

AR$ – 2007
Climate Climate in a narrow sense is usually defined as the ‘average weather’, or more rigorously, as the statistical description interms of the mean and variability of relevant quantities over a period of time ranging from months to thousands or millions of years. These quantities are most often surface variables such as temperature, precipitation, and wind. Climate in a wider sense is the state, including a statistical description, of the climate system. The classical period of time is 30 years, as defined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
http://www.ipcc.ch/publications_and_data/ar4/wg2/en/annexessglossary-a-d.html
=====================
Climate change Climate change refers to any change in climate over time, whether due to natural variability or as a result of human activity. This usage differs from that in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which defines ‘climate change’ as: ‘a change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and which is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods’.

It was rigged from the beginning. The UNFCCC and the IPCC don’t even see eye to eye.

Let’s leave Al Gore aside and look at why he was there. He was one small, but highly visible, part of a the wide ranging, aggressive, long-running state-wide “sustainability” program embraced by the State of Hawaii and its residents. Hawaiian archipelago is the most remote place on Earth – more distant from any other port or landfall that any other populated area. Everything that cannot be grown/made in HI is imported. For a high-tech economy that takes a lot of energy. So, energy generation is a big focus: Gov Lingle (R), the former governor, decreed the State of Hawaii would become independent of 70% of the external fuel (oil/coal) needed for electrical energy generation by 2030. Emphasis was placed on solar, wind, biomass and geothermal, as well as wave and anything else that might work. You can go the State of Hawaii web pages and read about it. The electric company, HECO, has developed a web page to show how much electrical energy is produced daily (http://www.hawaiianelectric.com/images/OahuReWatch.png) and where it comes from (mostly wind and solar). It is interesting to note that the solar takes a bite out of the 8am to 4pm energy needs for Honolulu. That saves a lot of imported oil.
The people of Hawaii fully embrace sustainability, forward looking preparation in case of calamity, and work very hard to remove the worst of the thin-card supports to its economy and livelihood. The Native Hawaiians new this inherently. Those that move here learn quickly whether due to a dock strike or a hurricane. And those who own the multimillion dollar homes and billion dollar hotels on the beach are watching climate change carefully as the beaches are noticeably beginning to change, most for the worse. Al Gore was greeted enthusiastically by the audience in the arena, as well as most of the residents of Hawaii, because his underlying message, sustainability for future generations, resonates with those who live in the shadow of unsustainability daily.

Tying global warming to a *specific* extreme weather event is different from saying global warming causes increased risk of such events.
Former VP, Nobel prize winner, film maker, author and multi-millionnaire. Al Gore is a legend and a sharp contrast to the current nutjobs on the GOP and libertarian tickets.
How’s that Mann vs Steyn case going by the way?

Al Gore, like Joe Biden after him, was picked as Clinton’s running mate for one reason – it rendered Clinton unimpeachable. I can imagine Slick Willie and Hillary cackling and high-fiving, saying, “We’re untouchable as long as that moron’s #2! Hey, we better bump up the size of his security detail.” Gore, with his half-lidded vacuous smile, his perpetually open mouth, and halting wooden locution convincingly comes across as a slack-jawed dolt.

He tried to speed up his fraud, by causing fear, saying that within 5 years polar ice would be gone, yet there is more of it.

The air conditioning was powered by an oil-fired power plant. So? He is for the gradual process of moving towards sustainable energy sources. It takes time and planning like everything else.

Yes, Cambodia took time & planning too.

Who was the stupid @SS group that would get Al Gore to speak anyway. They sure must be a board bunch over there on these Island’s. Al Gore is coming to an end with his BS theory, he has made his money form this Global Warming BS and now it’s tome for him to pass away or move from the public eye. He now has Obama and his EPA followers on the “JOP” now so they don’t need Al Gore no were. Let him go home in his Big gas using Limo and his coal burned warm and cool home and never be seen again. People don’t this because it a farce and now the whole world knows it and his great plan is coming to an end. Al Gore sucks and to think I voted for him OMG what if he had gotten in office we would already be under more than Obama has already taken us.

Hawaiians travel between the islands and receive their imported goods in boats and planes that run on what, exactly?

Wow…actual journalism on Yahoo???? Actually doing some research AND putting some facts into climate change is a welcome debate instead of propaganda. I don’t mind the fact on the table, as long as it is factual and science to let the public weigh on the issue.
And…Al Gore is nothing but a snake oil salesman, that is profiting off the stupid!

Al Gore is a hypocrite and is all about lining his pockets with money. Did he sail to Hawaii or paddle to Hawaii? I don’t think so. Anyone who makes money doing business with Al Jazeera has to be a sleeze ball.

BernardP: What is profoundly depressing is that 9000 people were present to listen to Gore’s gospel.
The AGW religion seems unstoppable.
I am surprised no body mentioned where the 9000 people came from? on Hawaii free pine apples/……
Nope,
Free Whackey Tabacci ???
Just maybe YES, and from a tobacco farmer no less, I think his family may have had advanced technologies to get the product to market.

Fool to argue against the truths on the left, when the truth on the right is bigger and more important. We are increasing our food supply, by increasing the carbon in our atmosphere. In the last 50 years; CO2 up 25%, average worldwide crop yield up 120%, population up 133%. Figure it out, understand it, make it your main argument. Make Al stand in the shoes of the denier, and say “carbon does not cause plant growth”. Anything else is foolishness.
