Climate craziness of the week: climate scientist presented as a God, like Mao and Kim Il-sung?

This picture looks a lot like some murals we’ve seen in the past to deify “heros of some revolution”.  Compare the photos below.

curtin-uni-sacred-wall-of-nobelling-words-collage

Jo Nova writes:

A friend at Curtin University, Western Australia reports that a new mysterious and imposing mural appeared on the facade. It is as if passers-by can look through the bricks and see a Saint-of-Science himself working.

The words on the plaque (which must be something like 5m wide) read “Inside our walls Professor Richard Warrick is continuing the climate change research that led to a Nobel Peace Prize. “

Now compare that mural to some others seen through history:

Makes you wonder “what were they thinking?” at Curtin University?

Jo Nova has the story here.

Not quite the same, as this mural is on the building where he works and not plastered all over the town. Still I take your point, it does have an eerie semblance to totalitarianism.

Great idea…maybe green paint, in memory of all the money dumped for models, computing power, data twisting, grid-filling, etc.
Maybe the missing bricks represent missing data? (Or shows how “stable” the models are?)

Inside our walls Professor Richard Warrick, depending upon what he’s had for lunch, will release, hopefully discreetly, puffs of methane gas from time to time (just like every other Nobel Prize winner).
Inside our walls Professor Richard Warrick will occasionally (just like every other Nobel Prize winner), in the form of a belch, release excess gas from the upper GI tract.
Inside our walls Professor Richard Warrick will sit upon a porcelain throne, pants pulled down, and engage in a [] movement (just like every other Nobel Prize winner).
Inside our walls Professor Richard Warrick, unless he’s a complete psychopath, will have occasional moments of doubt about what he’s doing or about to do (just like every other Nobel Prize winner).
Inside our walls Professor Richard Warrick (just like every other Nobel Prize winner) will consider that maybe his tax rates are too high and seek a way to reduce them.
Inside our walls Professor Richard Warrick (just like many other Nobel Prize winners) will experience a clogged nose and may, if no one’s looking, deftly insert an index finger into a nostril in a procedure in which to clean it out.
I think the foregoing descriptions are irrefutable and therefore should illustrate that Professor Richard Warrick (and other Nobel Prize winners) are, indeed, just like the rest of us and thus, in no way resemble a god. So, please let us all grow up and recognize that fact.

Busybodies, in environmental guise or any other, are always on the prowl, scenting the chance for a power grab to line their pockets with extortion.
Casablanca is a movie with memorable dialogue that shows how arbitrary power is exerted. I saw it in 1943 and many times after.
Rick listens to the music, As time goes by, and tells the pianist: Play it again Sam; Play it again. It harks back to June 1940, in Paris, and the collapse of France into the Vichy regime.
Rick is a sleazy racketeer who runs a gambling den in the haven of Casablanca, under the Vichy regime. Captain Renault is the corrupt boss of Casablanca police. He raids Rick’s cafe.
Renault: You are under arrest.
Rick: For what reason, under what law?
Renault: I am shocked. Shocked at the gambling that is going on in this place.
A smart croupier grabs a wad of banknotes from the till, and places it in Renault’s palm.
Croupier: Captain, your winnings.
Renault: Er… Thank you.
Case closed.
In the final scene Rick shoots the Nazi agent and Renault witnesses it. Renault looks the other way, calls policemen and orders: A murder has occurred. Arrest the usual suspects.

As for winning the the Nobel Prize, well, no one could put it better than P. Howard in the The 14-Carat Roadster.

Ivan Gorchev, sailor on the freight ship ‘Rangoon’, was not yet twenty-one when he won the Nobel Prize in physics. To win a scientific award at such a romantically young age is unprecedented, though some people might consider the means by which it was achieved a flaw. For Ivan Gorchev won the Nobel Prize in physics in a card game, called macao, from a Professor Bertinus, on whom the honour had been bestowed in Stockholm by the King of Sweden a few days earlier. But those who are always finding fault don’t like to face facts, and the fact of the matter is that Ivan Gorchev did win the Nobel Prize at the age of twenty-one.

Repeat: “those who are always finding fault don’t like to face facts

Richard Warrick Biography
When it comes to climate change, Professor Richard Warrick’s research is leading the way. As part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he shared a Nobel Peace Prize with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore and other selected IPCC authors in 2007.

Oh really!

IPCC Statement about the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize
“The prize was awarded to the IPCC as an organization, and not to any individual associated with the IPCC. Thus it is incorrect to refer to any IPCC official, or scientist who worked on IPCC reports, as a Nobel laureate or Nobel Prize winner. It would be correct to describe a scientist who was involved with AR4 or earlier IPCC reports in this way: “X contributed to the reports of the IPCC, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.””

February 20, 2014 12:31 pm

The Lambeyeque people of pre-Spanish Peru built man-made ‘mountains’ so large that the later Spanish thought they were natural geographic features. Took huge resource. The purpose was to control / predict the climate, specifically the terrible flooding in their territory that occurred at certain points of the El-Nino / La-Nina cycles. They thought that weather came from mountains, and that the elite atop their own mountains would be able to control it. This elite lived like gods, with everything they needed brought up to them, until of course the next flood. Then they and all their palaces atop the ‘mountains’ were burned. It seems we still pour big money and resource into ‘mountains’ that are supposed to predict (models) or control (emissions reduction) climate. Very fortunately, we’ve moved on from burning folks. But when, as seems increasingly likely from model performance, the climate elite of our own time are seen to have failed, many will wish their pictures were not up on a wall, or the web, or anywhere.

To Jimbo:
You wrote: “What does their Nobel Peace Prize actually mean?”
Your answer: not much. Early on, the Nobel committee clearly
took their responsibilities seriously. For example, there were
years where they took the step of not awarding a Peace
Prize. (For example, 1966, 1967, 1972). But, the Peace Prize
has been devalued by awarding it for silly things, to silly
organizations, etc.
1929. Awarded to F.B. Kellogg, for the Kellogg-Briand pact,
which outlawed war as an instrument of policy. The pact worked,
too–as long as nobody wanted to have a war. That was about 2
years.
1973. Joint award to Henry Kissinger & Le Duc Tho, for a
negotiated peace agreement to end the Vietnam war. That
worked, foo, for about 2 years, until North Vietnam decided to
invade South Vietnam and forcibly annex it.
1994. Joint award to Yasser Arafat, Yitzak Rabin, & Shimon
Peres. For “a political act which called for great courage on
both sides”? Peace hasn’t broken out between Israel and
the Palestinians, last I looked.
2007. The well-known joint award to Al Gore and the IPCC.
2009. To Barack Obama, “for his extraordinary efforts to
strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between
peoples.” This is perhaps the silliest of all. By the Nobel
organization’s own criteria, nominations close on the first of
February. At that point, Barack Obama had been in office for
all of 11 days. He accomplished “extraordinary efforts” in
just 11 DAYS?. This was simply meant as
a poke in the eye for ex-President Bush. And President
Obama’s record of using automated drone killing machines,
bombing Libya, etc., does not seem to qualify him for any
kind of peace award.

After making the case that science is done by consensus, the next logical step was for climate scientists to use PR to mold consensus in their favor. The game now is not to do real science but to use biased computer models and political propaganda to shape public opinion. Then use that public opinion to justify more grant money. Everyone wins — except the tax payer and science of course.

While it is your website and you can say what you want (and link the pieces you wish), this is not the kind of content I expect from your site.
Look, a mural depicting the value the university gets from investing in science.. espousing the award winning research and making an otherwise dull wall interesting.. butwait, this has some visual similarities to (insert dictator here) and that invalidates what exactly? The caption claim that it’s a picture of a Nobel scientist? That that particular scientist bears a resemblance to the picture? That the scientist and his community feel he is doing good work?
So all advertising featuring any celebrity bear resemblance to the propaganda posters you linked as well.. Should we field the opinion that all advertising is personality cult fodder and liken it to DAA DAA DAAAAAA pictures of Mao?
Of course not. We beat these guys by being better. More scientific. More transparent. Less motivated by opinion and knee jerk negative emotion to the other side of the argument. This piece and the comments I read are deficient on all counts and certainly not the reason I spend my internet minutes here.

To Pat Frank (Feb 20 @ 9.23 AM, thanks for the Guardian Link on Hanson (18Jan2009):
“As a result of his fears about sea-level rise, Hansen said he had pressed both Britain’s Royal Society and the US National Academy of Sciences to carry out an urgent investigation of the state of the planet’s ice-caps. However, nothing had come of his proposals. The first task of Obama’s new climate office should therefore be to order such a probe “as a matter of urgency”, Hansen added.”
Don’t despair Hanson, the UNSW kindie school of Climatology sponsored “Ship of Fools” (incidentally including a Guardian photojournalist, who testily remarked on the lack of peanut banana milkshakes in the Antarctic) ) have recently done the research and found that the southern ice cap and the surrounding sea ice are doing well.

When you tell a basic lie like you won a Nobel when in fact you no more right to it than a administrator that filed some documents for the IPCC. You have to wonder about the ‘quality’ of the work they are doing. Still some good news , his studies should demand their work is judge at the same ‘standard ‘ that way they can put any old rubbish in and get a pass , so more beer time for them.
Even now it sill amazes me just how very poor are the ‘standards ‘ of the professionals working in this area , that they cannot even met the requires of a undergraduate handing in a essay is hilarious and yet they cannot understand why people don’t just ‘take their word for it ‘

Even if you had stepped onto campus so many times that you earned a doctorate, your posts might have been as irritatingly stupid as most of Mann’s remarks. Shrug — maybe his was pass/fail, who knows… . And, btw, your posts in no way raise a presumption that you have little formal education. I wish they were longer and more detailed at times… . Keep up the good work, UK!
@Andres Valencia — good point!
(And “Cheers!” to you! #(:)) — in gratitude for your being one of the only two people to kindly acknowledge my WUWT valentine, I’ll be trying to give you some affirmation, from time to time, too)
“Alas, poor Warrick”Chris Clark. LOL. Love it.

The USA actually has a long history of socialist realism.
One example.

You’re right. Me too. That was right after we shot Libya to rubble, wasn’t it?

If you click on the picture and open it in a new window, then enlarge, it appears to be a mural painted over the bricks and lintels. Makes it look like the “bricks short of a full load” effect, but it’s not.
There was a fellow in Hayward, CA who used to do murals like this, and paintings of people either on the outside of buildings, or inside (as in the Butterick/Qume building). Sometimes it was really startling. Sort of like the more talented screevers (sidewalk artists)…
Alas, poor Warwick,

Wanted to email Prof Warwick and suggest that, out of embarrassment, he should tell the Uni to remove this Communist Era propaganda installation. Guess what? Unlike every other academic at Curtin Uni, there is no publicly accessible email address for the good professor. Pathetic, eh? Who the F%&k do these people think they are? Unbelievable.

This is from his climate software website.
“Hamilton’s CLIMsystems Ltd. Scores National Innovator of the Year Award”
“Richard Warrick, one of the authors of that report is a leading figure in the sea level rise and impact modeling field. He was recognized for his contribution to global climate change science when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize along with other key players in the IPCC in 2007.”

I have not got time at the mo to investigate how accurate Warrick’s climate model software has been to date, it would been interesting to see how inaccurate his models have been to date.

Only thing better would be if this building was in the city of Jericho. And the walls came tumbling down…

Would have to vote that this is a different spin from Chairman and Fidel, but these guys are definitely positioning themselves as shamans. Mike would have us trust his “gut feelings” , the twinges in his gizzard. It is an interesting, but frightening study in sociology and anthropology.

More like-
‘Discover more about Curtin’s game changers at markettomorrowbetter.com.au’
Which sadly is what our cloistered sandstones have become nowadays, tarting themselves to ever more weaker intellects with marketing campaigns in a race to the bottom, under the guise of liberating and uplifting the masses from their drudgery.

Obama has long perfected the technique (bright backlighting of his close-cropped cranium). Anent which, I hear the DoE and USPS employees are also being armed and trained. Check out the events in the Ukraine for ‘why now?’.
