The Southern California Colby wildfire and 'climate change'

While not a full-bore media hype yet, there are the beginnings of chatter on blogs and Twitter that the Colby fire in Southern California might somehow be related to “climate change”.  NASA MODIS has this image and explanation:

Colby Fire Near Los Angeles, California

A wildfire started and spread quickly in the foothills northeast of Los Angeles on January 16, 2014. The plume of ash and smoke blanketed much of the metropolitan area and prompted air quality warnings.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites captured this images of the Colby fire:

According to InciWeb, the fire started around 6 a.m. Pacific Time on January 16 in Angeles National Forest near Glendora, California. As of 3 p.m. local time, nearly 500 firefighters were working the fire, which had destroyed 1,700 acres and at least two homes. Fire officials were concerned about gusty winds and extremely low humidity that could promote fire growth.

So before we get into the blame game of climate change, it might be worth noting that it appears the fires were started by some pothead campers.

Three men arrested in accidentally setting the highly-dangerous Colby Fire plaguing Southern California were found with pot in their backpacks, according to local reports. They are being held on $500,000 bail, according to police Sergeant Michael Hammond at the Glendora Police Department. According to Police Chief Tim Staab, the three men did not set the fire purposefully: “It wasn’t an arson. They are charged with a crime but part of it is criminal stupidity.”

The fire was caused by a change in the *political* climate of increased tolerance of marijuana use.

Homeless folks campfire got out of control…
Three men accused of lighting a campfire that grew into the destructive Colby Fire were behind bars with bail amounts of $500,000 each late Thursday, officials said.
Clifford Eugene Henry, 22, of Glendora, Jonathan Carl Jarrell, 23, of Irwindale and Steven Robert Aguirre, 21, a transient whose last known address was in Los Angeles, were booked on suspicion of unlawfully causing a fire of a structure or forest land…
“It wasn’t an arson,” Staab said. “They are charged with a crime but part of it is criminal stupidity.”
The men had grown cold and placed more paper into a campfire when the fire grew out of control.

Blaming AGW is all the rage with the eco-loon warmistas here in Australia. They have to get themselves in the msm somehow and the ‘science’ is running a bit low these days. Come to think of it, a bunch of potheads or ex potheads are to blame for the whole CAGW warmista thing anyway.

This is 6 orders of magnitude smaller than the area burnt annually, BEFORE California was settled.

Yes, they were so upset about the global warming problem they were driven to pot smoking… which dulled their senses and led to the fire. So there you have it. Climate change *is* responsible.

1) I believe that they are not allowed to keep a fire break around their houses, which is why they get burned down every time a fire passes through. This is just plain stupid and criminal.
2) They do not allow enough regular clearing of underbrush and dead material to keep fires from becoming raging fires.
3) How many people realize that the canyon homes are not insurable? To cover these idiots living in a natural fire path, the government made the insurance companies start a pool of funds to cover these idiots. So, the normal people living in logically safe places are funding, with their inflated premiums, the idiots living in the canyons. Now, that’s a subsidy one can take to the bank, literally.

Be objective. Look at most of California’s countryside. If it isn’t irrigated, it is dry, brown desert. It doesn’t have ‘dry spells’ – dry is normal. It has very occasional rainfall (wet spells?) but is otherwise dry.
The canyon lands, gully washes, salt pans, and dry outflow plains all speak to very occasional rains that can cause short duration, water driven erosion and flooding followed by very extended periods of normal, dry weather. Of course, it is susceptible to fire. It is normally dry.

For most of us, learning science meant mastering a body of known facts and related concepts that had been accumulated over the last few hundred years, especially the last 60 or so. That’s not how science is to be taught any more in any country but especially not under the new Common Core Next Generation Science Standards or the new C-3 Social Studies Standards in the US. Instead students are to be provided with conceptual lenses and Big Ideas that they are to apply to any ambiguous or undetermined situation. Facts are merely something offered to reenforce the supplied concepts.
Hyping all weather events that have disturbing visuals to CAGW taps into the seeds deliberately being created in K-12 classrooms for just that purpose. There’s even a behavioral science name for the desired mindset-obuchenie from the Russian psychologists who researched this as a political useful way to push ideological thinking without it being apparent. Working hand in hand with the media to disseminate the desired concepts is no accident. Each of the reports laying out how to see Sustainability usually has a section on the media strategy.
We just have to better appreciate how media and education are being deliberately used now to sell false beliefs that necessitate an ever increasing public sector.

how could homeless guys pot cause a fire today when there were fires in the past before there were homeless guys who smoked pot?
or maybe we cant understand what causes a fire today by looking at all past fires. maybe we can understand what causes warming today without understanding what caused warming in the past. maybe many things cause fires and many things cause warming and the study of history isnt all that illuminating about what causes are working today.

Blaming CAGW is being peddled hard during this summer in Australia by all Warmistas. The recent bushfire in Western Australia, which burnt 52 houses, was produced by termites felling an illegally constructed power pole and its line in someone’s back yard, creating arcing and sparking. His house was burnt first and then others later. No Science is involved in the ‘proof’ of CAGW being to blame, as Warmistas live in a science free zone.

The Pacific Ocean temperature anomaly (Pacific Gyre located at N42, W145) is at 4.5C. This enormous amount of excessively warm ocean water is redirecting the Jet Stream [heat upwelling]. The redirected Jet Stream moves the moisture north preventing winter snow in California.
The Pacific Ocean has been warming since 1650 until now [due to the Sun]. The Sun has gone quiet and we have warm oceans and cool continents. Until the Pacific Gyre loses it heat, the mountains of California will not get rain. Prepare for a burning hot summer.

Hey Janice,
Big smile right back atcha. TRuthfully, both my pot and booze days are behind me, though I’ve done my fair share and more over my lifetime. Always been a pretty fierce libertarian when it comes to what a person chooses to do with his or her own body. The “war on drugs” so-called has been a spectacular failure, which is not only not a surprise, it was entirely predictable. As predictable as the failure of “Prohibition,” which was of course a misguided attempt to outlaw booze…a drug… as surely as pot is…thought infinitely more destructive in its effects. So what happened during those years? Alcoholism increased, organized crime flourished, corruption was rampant, and otherwise good, law abiding people woke up one morning to find themselves considered criminals…
Imvho, far greater damage is done by the proscriptions against drugs than the drugs themselves. All we need do is take a gander at Mexico where at last count some 60,000 innocent people have died…collateral damage in an insane war on the drug cartels. Does it not occur to these people that the cartels would not exist without the laws against individual drug use? 60,000 people!!
Forgive the diatribe 🙂 Yes, writing from south Florida where to tell you the truth we could in the last few days use a bit more of that life sustaining blessing called global warming. This is supposed to be the rainy season — January is typically the wettest month in SoCal, and the hills are usually Irish-countryside green by now.
Instead, it hasn’t rained a drop since the first week of December, and it’s been bouncing in and out of the eighties since Christmas. This really is “weird weather.” But it happens, and it’s a direct result of the same kink in the circumpolar vortex that’s been freezing the East. When they’re unusually cold and snowy, we’re unusually warm and dry.

Doesn’t have to be intentional to be charged with felony arson in California. Simply having a camp stove flame get away from you in a red flag area will get you charged with arson. That actually happened to someone I know who was making some coffee on a camp stove and somehow got some nearby grass on fire. He got it put out but not before someone had called authorities. He was charged with felony arson as fires of ANY sort were not allowed in that area due to red flag warnings.

Mr. Knights! What has gotten into my usually strongly anti-AGW ally?
“California is the US state that warmed … .” Did it “warm” or was it just relatively warm? Was it warmer in CA in 2013 than in 2012? The NOAA map for 2012 has “115” on California. The 2013 map has “108.”
Hoping all is well with you. Correct my grammar or spelling, okay (yes, indeed, you are good at editing and I regularly need it!)? Then I’ll know my ally Roger Knights is doing just fine. #(:))

@pokerguy. On a serious note I’m either a victim of over-reporting or Californians have developed an extreme tolerance to disaster. There seems to be an endless series of wind-fueled forest fires and landslides with the occasional earthquake just to make things interesting. It makes me wonder how people ever get insurance in these areas. No wonder they’re insistent on rolling their own.

See, if CA would just legalize it, they wouldn’t have had to go out in the woods to smoke their weed and this fire would never have happened….
No wildfires in Amsterdam.

Roger. Probably not much natural forest either.

australia has more than it’s fair share of arsonists:
17 Jan: Australian: AAP: Arsonists light Victorian urban fringe fires
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Ken Lay said police believe 12 of the 68 fires burning across the state were deliberately lit.
Most of those fires were sparked on the urban fringes of Melbourne, including three grass fires in Epping, in the city’s north…

To be fair, the evolution of global circulation to the point it is now at, may in fact be a type of climate change. After it, it is highly abnormal for the jet stream to be stuck in a meridional configuration for this long without either smooth or step wise retrograding. Now, if we consider just what sort of climate change might be implied, I suppose the warmistas might not like the outcome. Nor would most people.

A dry California will turn into a mud flow when the rains come. All those deep washes were formed by something other than dry air.

Fire starts,
Open the dykes and there, no more fire
Pump it dry and start all over again, been doing it for generations (LOL)

from Rockwood…
Actually had me laughing out loud. As in ALOL…Very funny.
Steve and pokerguy,
Back about 1970, Anita Bryant was the spokeswoman for the Florida orange growers association. She was the first to issue the “Orange Juice, It isn’t just for breakfast anymore!” slogan. A beer company in Wisconsin ran a local parody ad of the orange juice commercial in Wisconsin. (I think it was Leinenkugels beer, might have been Point beer, fuzzy memories… too many beers?) “Leinenkugels, It’s not just for breakfast anymore!” was uttered by a quizzical faced guy in a Tee shirt on a TV ad.
It was a good spoof… but I can’t find any reference to it now, only a memory from my high school years.

“Part of it is criminal stupidity”? If that was a felony, half of congress would serve out mandatory life sentences.

Hey, thank you for highlighting that they were “pothead campers”…..was it their pot that started the fire or their campfire?
Because the hysterical “pothead” crap is all you reaply meant to expose….yes?
And when fires are started by persons flicking their cigarette butts out of their window’s, as has happened over and over, do we get the headline “bitchstick suckers”?
Truly though, if you can connect the pot in their backpacks to the fire on the ground, then use your ignorant ranting line. If you are just using the same line pushed in your truthrevolt story, you shouldn’t debase your intelligence in this way.
Again………fires started by bitchstick smokers(how many?)=zero rants about bitchstick smokers.
……………….fires started by people with pot in their backpacks (fully 1)=silly and useless rant on pothead backpack weilding campers.
WOW

Please. It’s not the weather. It’s not the potheads.
It’s the fuels.
Weather doesn’t burn; fuels burn. In the case of wildfires, the fuel is plant matter. Fuel is a biological phenomenon. Fuel grows and accumulates every year.
Thus, wildfires are BIOLOGICAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you live blithe disregard next to a rat nest with 50 years of accumulated hardwood fuels reeking of creosote and other flammable hydrocarbons, and then your home burns down in a wildfire emanating from that rat nest, please don’t blame the neighbor children. It’s your own stupid fault.

Global warming; is there anything it can’t do?
Fires can only occur in the presence of oxygen and a fuel.
Obviously as fires are increasing, everywhere across the face of the planet, according to the presstitutes of the MSM, it must be because of low slung oxygen, that well mixed excess CO2 is forcing innocent oxygen molecules down from near the ozone layer where they promote excess oxidation of surface materials.
Soon our entire naval fleet will vanish into a pile of ferrous oxide.
Civilization is doomed.
There you go, the new fear of the Cult of Calamitous Carbon.
Sure too be included as fact if there is a AR6.
If this needs sarc… God help the needy.
