The White House gets into the 'polar vortex' climate change blame business

Watch John Holdren struggle to explain  the “waviness” of the circumpolar vortex aka the ‘polar vortex’ in today’s news cycle. Also, he says:

“If you’ve been hearing that extreme cold spells like the one we’re having in the United States now disprove global warming, don’t believe it,”

“The fact is that no single weather episode can either prove or disprove global climate change.”

From the video description:

President Obama’s Science and Technology Advisor, Dr. John Holdren, explains the polar vortex in 2 minutes—and why climate change makes extreme weather more likely going forward. Learn more at http://wh.gov/climate-change.

Seems they had to rush this to press so as to not to miss the news cycle before the cold air went away. Watch, and be sure to have your air sickness bag handy.

I’m too busy at work right now, so I’ll leave readers to point out the weaknesses.

Frigid temperatures no doubt the result of global warming which melted the Arctic, kinked the jet stream and pushed the cold air south or maybe the result of excessive hot air emanating from Washington DC and certain “reknowned” climate scientists.

The man is correct – it doesn’t prove or disprove “global climate change”. Of course what he really means is ‘human caused global warming’. But what it does prove is that weather events and the temperature ranges that can occur (-50 deg C and +50 deg C, i.e. a temperature difference of 100 deg C) swamps the 1 deg C (to be generous) of “global warming” over the next 100 years that is in all probability not likely to be due to CO2 emissions. And proves the utter stupidity of attempting to “tackle” such a rise.

Abstract
Glaciochemical time series developed from Summit, Greenland, indicate that the chemical composition of the atmosphere was dynamic during the Holocene epoch. Concentrations of sea salt and terrestrial dusts increased in Summit snow during the periods 0 to 600, 2400 to 3100, 5000 to 6100, 7800 to 8800, and more than 11,300 years ago. The most recent increase, and also the most abrupt, coincides with the Little Ice Age. These changes imply that either the north polar vortex expanded or the meridional air flow intensified during these periods, and that temperatures in the mid to high northern latitudes were potentially the coldest since the Younger Dryas event.

You deniers just don’t understand the science. You’re probably creationists. Let me explain this to you. I’ll use small words so that you can understand. All bad weather is caused by global warming, whether that weather is warm or cold. If rainfall causes a flood, it’s caused by global warming. If rainfall causes bumper crops it’s a random weather event. This is because western culture values profits over people. People in the west have become alienated from nature and consumerism has put the earth out of BALANCE. Global warming is mother nature fighting back against corporate greed. And you don’t fight back with pleasant weather, therefore good weather can’t be caused by global warming and bad weather must be. QED

MoveOn.Org the left wing activist group that supports all things left is getting in on the rebuttal act too. Obviously the NA frigid weather has all the warmists mobilizing to fight the increasing doubt of the populace.
Here’s an email they are circulating to their followers:
Dear MoveOn member,
It’s freezing out! Literally. And the frigid weather most of the country is facing—with windchills still as low as minus 50 degrees F in some places—has brought out the climate deniers yet again.
The cold weather we’re experiencing is originating in the polar vortex—a whirlwind of Arctic air in which temperatures drop when the North Pole is pointed away from the sun.(1) The Arctic is actually warming twice as fast as much of the Earth, and the jet streams that trap its frigid air are weakening. Cold snaps like the one we’re experiencing are a normal part of winter weather—and some climate scientists think the melting Arctic is actually making this sort of “polar vortex” event more likely.(2)
But while the vortex science may sound complicated, one thing is crystal clear: global warming is very real—and hugely dangerous. That’s why we’ve partnered with our friends at Forecast the Facts to give members the proof they need to counter Fox News’ climate change-denying talking points.
Can you share our graphic today so your friends know how climate change deniers’ claims are full of hot air?
http://front.moveon.org/the-polar-vortex-3-reasons-climate-deniers-claims-are-full-of-hot-air/
After you share the graphic, sign Forecast the Facts’ petition demanding that The New York Times follow the lead of The Los Angeles Times and stop publishing the letters of climate deniers.

Questions for Dr John Holdren or anyone who agrees with him
Were the previous record low temperatures across the US due to a Polar Vortex? How far back do we have to go to find the last Polar Vortex that was not due to global warming?
When were all the earlier Polar Vortex incidents against which we can measure the claim of growing frequency of such events? One cannot be the basis for saying we’re seeing increased frequency.
Holdren could have stopped at saying that the current episode is weather, not climate. So why didn’t he? Could it be a decade and a half of no increase made this difficult?

It’s interesting that the voyage isn’t part of the official Australian Antarctic Science Program, and was taking paying passengers. The cruise is badged by its operators as the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, appropriating the name of the Australasian scientific team that explored part of the cold continent between 1911 and 1914, led by Douglas Mawson. Who is trying to prove the climate doesn’t change? He probably meant ‘global warming’, of the man made variety, in which case he is correct. Mother nature does a good job disproving that. This is what we have been trying to explain to the alarmists for years. Their assertion was for dangerous warming in the future. Though, when they said warming, they actually meant cooling. But it could mean warming, unless it’s cooling.
Oh yeah, we should be listening more to these people. (sarc.)

First, it is NOT the polar vortex.
The polar vortex, as variable as it is, is still right over the North Pole where is almost always is.
This is just cold Arctic-type air which has pushed fairly far south as it often does in the winter and in the summer. It is a combination of the Low-High set-up winds (mostly) and the Jetstream location (only partially in this case.)
Jet Stream animations from SFSU which was the main goto source for this until recently; available here. Should be able to figure out to use this site.

“-50′s to -60′sF in Siberia. Return engagement of “polar vortex” in 10 days…..”
You noticed that too, I see.
One thing about a “meridianal” flow is that it spreads snow further south. As soon as you have snow cover over vast areas of Tundra and Taiga you have in place land that can make it colder than the Pole more easily than the Pole. (Even when ice is in place the “heat” of seawater around 29 degrees has an effect through the ice, and the air over the Pole seldom gets below 40 below, unless it comes streaming from colder lands via cross-polar-flow.)
According to Holden’s line of logic a “zonal” flow from a colder world would keep the cold air up over the Arctic Sea, and limit the snow-cover over Tundra and Taiga, which would result in a warmer world. Conversely he suggests a more relaxed flow would be generated by a warmer world, resulting in snow cover further south and a colder world. Very crafty! The only problem is it blows a hole in the whole idea of Global Warming reducing albedo to have this gigantic snow-cover in place, reflecting sunlight as days get longer than nights. (Even though most of the snow is melted by July 1, by then a gigantic amount of radiation is bounced away, and the days are already getting shorter. It isn’t a bit relaxed.)
Another weakness is his logic involves the fact these Polar Vortexes, when they get stretched out, are not slow and lazy, like a summer jet stream. They are ferocious beasts, bringing air colder than the Pole to the latitude of northern Africa in both North America, (Texas and Northern Mexico,) and Asia (China.) Every body of water in their way is sapped of heat, and faces spring significantly colder.
Thirdly, if one pokes a bit through history books one finds warm periods were not marked by ferocious storms. If they had been so bad I doubt we’d call them “optimums.”
One thing that cued me in to the fact this might be a nasty winter was the fact the Tundra and Taiga of Siberia were completely covered by snow very early, and generating cold through radiational cooling especially early. It is fascinating to watch, for the winds change, as do the effects of the winds, when the Tundra goes from being much warmer than the Arctic Sea to much colder. The early snowfall made this phenomenon happen much more swiftly this year.

If Serbia is hot, why did you post a link to a story about Siberia? Especially one that may have been taken in the summer given that the story refers to things like:

In the northern city of Verkhoyansk average maximum temperatures are around minus 47C. Currently, they are some 14C warmer at minus 32C.
The southern city of Irkutsk is experiencing temperatures of minus 6C, ten degrees above average and this pattern is being repeated across much of the region.
In some areas ice and snow are being replaced by heavy rain and green grass. Many lakes and rivers, which would normally be ice-bound at this time of year, are flowing freely.

I get the sense those rivers won’t be flowing freely much longer.
(There are other notes about warming, feel free to read, but there’s nothing about Serbia in that article. There are two references here from people who likely didn’t read the target.)

So, let me get this straight: In a “warming world’, the Whirlpool gets weak & “wavy”, and more cold air escapes to the South, and more Warm air “invades” to the North . . . ergo, in a ‘Cooling World’ the Whirlpool would get strong and circular, the cold air would be imprisoned right at the North Pole, and we could build Walt Disney World North in effing NEWFOUNDLAND?

President John F. Kennedy issued several memorable statements, a few of which seemed to acquire the qualities of a legend, and as such, the details behind them can become obscure. Such was the case at a luncheon in the White House. Depending upon who tells the story there was a collection of Nobel Laureates, or university professors there. Whatever the exact details are it’s clear that learned people had been invited there for a dinner. John F. Kennedy addressed them and told them something to the extent that never before in the history of the White House had such an assemblage of intellect gathered there for a meal – except when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.
Well, let us all consider now what address a future President (assuming that is still the title to be used) may present to an assemblage of comedians, comedy writers, joke tellers, late night TV hosts, humorists, laughalologists, ticklers, comedy acts, and proctologists.
Now, I think you know where I’m going with this but I still can’t resist going there. So here goes with a likely address: Never before in the history of the White House has such an assemblage of members of the theatre of the absurd gathered for a dinner except when President Obama’s science adviser, John Holdren, dined alone.
Or, perhaps when the two of them dined together.

Its a theory still and the problem is the observable climate has not matched their dire predictions. Scientifically, that means we need a new theory. I vote for its normal…not man made!

Just to re-iterate a point made often before: AGW does not yet qualify as a theory. A theory must have successfully made predictions, including unique and novel ones, which are validated by publicly available data. It welcomes and takes on new tests from other theories. It hasn’t yet passed all possible known tests to become a natural law.
A hypothesis must have proposed numerous pass-fail tests, and passed all that have been performed so far, and be eligible for more. It doesn’t offer full explanations for all known relevant phenomena, yet.
A speculation offers an explanation for some phenomena, not yet tested or validated.
AGW is still a speculation. The best-funded speculation in the history of man.

The warmists attribute any change to the increase in atmospheric CO2 and ignore observations such as the lack of warming for the last 17 years which disprove CAGW. The change in the North Atlantic jet stream speed is not unusual. Did the warmists note the sudden increase in sea ice in the Arctic and the record sea ice in the Antarctic correlates with the sudden appearance of the polar vortex (aka Blizzards) in the US? Could there be anything else that has changed? (Hint the sun.)
http://www.met.reading.ac.uk/~swr01tjw/pubs/20Cjet.final.pdf
Twentieth century North Atlantic jet variability
In general, the features exhibited in shorter records are shown to be robust, for example the strong skewness of the NAO distribution. Related to this is a clear multimodality of the jet latitude distribution which suggests the existence of preferred positions of the jet. Decadal variations in jet latitude are shown to correspond to changes in the occurrence of these preferred positions. However, it is the speed rather than the latitude of the jet which exhibits the strongest decadal variability, and in most seasons this is clearly distinct from a white noise representation of the seasonal means. When viewed in this longer term context the variations of recent decades do not appear unusual, and recent values of jet latitude and speed are not unprecedented in the historical record.
Curious the same pattern of extreme cold and blizzards have occurred before. The warmists may not have noticed the sun was in deep solar magnetic cycle minimum during the blizzards of 1977 and 1978.

1. You say that extreme cold spells don’t disproves global warming, yet you have no problem at all saying that extreme hot spells do prove global warming which is both hypocritical and intellectually dishonest.
2. While you say that no single weather event can prove or disprove “climate change” that is not the question. Skeptics do not dispute that climate changes, in fact it is the skeptics that argue that climate changes is normal, that it has always changed, and that it always will change, regardless of human activity. To the contrary, it is the believers of global warming that argue that climate should not change and that if it does change; it must be caused by human activity. Thus it is the believers that accuse the skeptics of believing what they themselves believe.
3. Polar vortexes are not proof of human caused CO2 driven climate change as winter polar vortex storms existed before the United States was even a country. During the Battle of Princeton in the winter of 1777 a similar polar vortex storm helped General Washington to surprise the forces at Trenton New Jersey giving the United States a much needed victory. This battle happened nearly 100 years before humans started using coal, oil, and natural gas as a major fuel source.
4. Globally there has been no measurable warming for over 17 years and if this “extreme weather” is caused by warming or climate change, why did the extreme weather event even happen now when there has been no warming or climate change for the last 17 years even though atmospheric CO2 has continued to climb?

With a loopy polar jet, pools of warm water set up highs (sometimes blocking highs) that make the jet loop up and over the high which then become cold loops as the jet slides down into southern latitudes, bringing cold air to our homes. As well, loops that go the other way and invade the Arctic set up warm incursions that feel like a heat wave in winter. So it makes sense that Germany may be sweltering while the midwest of the America’s is shivering.

The polar vortex (aka winter weather) is the latest victim of CO2 obsession.
So on the one hand, no weather event can prove or disprove AGW. Yet on the other hand, *this* weather event, renamed to sound scary, is going to be more frequent. So for the CO2 obsessed, the single weather event does prove up their belief. And since AGW is non-falsifiable, the believers cannot see the oxymoron that they find their belief underscored in every weather event.

The operative purpose of this video is to allow the White House and the mangy purveyors of global warming to rename the natural phenomina that they had previously commandeered to launch an attack on prosperity, the ozone hole.
Whenever you hear the phrase “polar vortex”, that’s politicians trying desperately to disassociate the ozone hole from a natural temperature dependant process operating on all planets, provided they possess an atmosphere.
They don’t want the public putting two and two together, that the terms are interchangable.

I have a few questions for Holdren, but if anyone else can answer, please do.
1. If a warming Arctic causes the polar vortex to invade further south, can we expect these freezing temperatures to return this summer when the Arctic really warms up? Or can it tell the difference between warming caused by CO2 and warming caused by other means?
2. If the whole world is warming, and the Arctic is warming at twice the rate, where did all this record cold air come from? Was it hiding in the deep oceans?
3. If the polar vortex is sending this cold air mass south and replacing it with warmer air in the Arctic, why isn’t the polar ice melting? Why is the ice extent even greater this year than last?

One polar vortex and one extreme cold event doesn’t disprove or prove ‘global warming’.
That much is true.
Nor does an Australian summer of extreme heat for that matter.
What always happens with these lines is that they are distorted by one side of the argument.
Is there something intrinsically evil about the middle line on this one??
If not, why do the MSM treat it as being akin to admitting that you get your rocks off torturing hookers with burning cigarette ends??!!

Darn. Opened 43 bottles of lemonade last night and allowed the (entirely man-made) gaseous ‘fizz’ to escape into the kitchen’s atmosphere. Unfortunately, the unusually cold and draughty polar vortex that greeted me this morning in our adjacent kitchen conservatory must be conclusive proof of global warming – either that or I really do need to fix that dodgy leaking roof panel that keeps letting all that cold air in. Sod it, I’ll fix it later and accept that man-made climate change is to blame. Hey, I admit it’s all my fault for opening the lemonade in the first place. (Thank goodness I didn’t open the crate of beer too.)

“If a warming Arctic causes the polar vortex to invade further south, can we expect these freezing temperatures to return this summer when the Arctic really warms up? Or can it tell the difference between warming caused by CO2 and warming caused by other means?”
You can expect cooler temperatures, probably in the UK summertime, which tends to happen each time the Met office forecast a barbecue summer..
“If the whole world is warming, and the Arctic is warming at twice the rate, where did all this record cold air come from? Was it hiding in the deep oceans?”
The Arctic is still very cold in Winter even if min temps are somewhat higher.
“If the polar vortex is sending this cold air mass south and replacing it with warmer air in the Arctic, why isn’t the polar ice melting?”
It may well be that we will see Arctic max sea ice extent slightly lower by March this year.
The point though, is that there is zero evidence that polar vortexes are the result of the very small amount of global warming. Polar vortexes are nothing new.
Having said that, when polar vortexes do occur, and polar air masses spill south, that would likely result in warmer air coming up and impacting on sea ice. However, let’s be clear, this is weather not climate change, and it is nothing new.

Their current argument is that no single event proves or disproves that there is no global warming. That is fair. However some of the alarmists then turn around and use the same single events to prove that global warming exists, like the single warm month in Russia and the warm summer in Australia . They argue in circles that is both dishonest and deceitful . Even when one presents longer term evidence that there has actually been no global warming for 17 years and the winters across the Northern Hemisphere have been cooling now for at least 15 years and to the extent that this cooling now carries through to the spring season in Canada and the cooling is starting already in the fall in United States , the policymakers try to hide these fact of a cooling planet from the public as we saw with the latest IPCC report . In United States cooling has been well underway now for at least 15 years The same is happening in Canada.
The following are monthly temperature trends for Contiguous US or 48 state as calculated by the NCDC/NOAA Climate at a Glance web page for the last 15 years [1998-2013 The figure reflect the linear trend in Fahrenheit degrees per decade
JAN -1.49 F/decade (declining)

The sandpaper pad looks a little like a small wood paint stirrer with strips of sandpaper glued or stapled to it; as the sandpaper gets used up it’s torn off to reveal a clean sheet. Anyway, we sand the lead down into a fine point. If we’re true professionals we check that point against a fingertip. Then we start to work.

We should not let this single SSW/polar vortex breakout event hide the fact that winters have been getting colder in North America before this event already, The polar vortex event reduced the base winter temperatures further . The polar vortex breakout event is like turning on the air coditioning in a room that was already getting colder due the colder winter trend . There is a colder winter temperature trend developing in many parts of Canada since 1998 and this colder air will sooner or later affect United States and North America
In Canada, the winter temperature departures from 1961-1990 averages [as per Environment Canada data] have been basically flat since 1998 when measured on the National level. However regionally it is quite a different picture. 7 of 11 major temperature regions represented by about 53 % of Canadian land areas [, mostly western and north western Canada,] have had winter temperatures declining since 1998. For another 20 % of the land areas involving Northeastern forest areas (Ontario and Quebec], the winter temperatures have been flat since 1998. Only the Atlantic region and Arctic Tundra, Mountains and Fiords, representing about 27 % of the land area show winter warming since 1998 mostly due to the past warm Atlantic Ocean. However the Canadian Arctic region has now started to cool post 2010 and winter temperature departures have already been 4-5 degrees cooler in the Arctic, tundra mountains and fiords. The current winter looks like it is going to be extremely cold across most of Canada but especially in the west, northwest and the Great Lakes region where temperatures around -55 C are being recorded. January and February are predicted to have below normal temperatures. I see Canadian winters getting even colder over the next several decades and new winter records being set as both coastal areas and the Arctic also cool due to cooling north Atlantic and North Pacific ocean SST.

Holdren says “a growing body of evidence suggests that the kind of extreme cold being experienced by much of the United States as we speak, is a pattern that we can expect to see with increasing frequency”.
Back in 1971 John Holdren believed that human activity was going to cause a new ice age. When that didn’t happen and things got warmer through the 80’s and 90’s he switched his stance saying that human activity is causing global warming.
For the last 17 years however temps have plateaued and now they seem to be heading back down again. But instead of just switching back to the whole ice age thing again Holdren seems to be mixing the two theories by saying that it’s getting warmer in the North Pole which is causing it to get colder here in the U.S..
So he’s basically politicizing the weather by saying, whenever there is bad weather of any kind, man is to blame, so we need to tax you so we can make good weather.
I am reminded of the scene from the movie ‘Wizard of Oz’ when Dorothy discovers that the Wizard isn’t a wizard at all but just smoke and mirrors when she sees the man behind the curtain. Being revealed as a fake the wizard tries to divert Dorothy by saying “Pay no attention to man behind the curtain!”
I am also reminded of the famous George Bush quote.
“fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.”

Before we ask where his explanation was, we need to be sure he even believes it. I do not know what he thinks, however I would really like to know if he or someone else advised Obama according to:
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/07/21/ten-years-of-accelerated-global-warming/
“During the July 2013 U.S. Senate hearing at which Roger Pielke Jr. and Roy Spencer gave stellar testimony to the visible discomfiture of the climate-extremist witnesses, none of the “Democrat” Senators and none of the people they had chosen to testify before them was at all anxious to defend Mr. Obama’s assertion that over the past decade global warming has been accelerating at an unforeseen rate.
At a fund-raiser for the “Democratic” Congressional Campaign Committee in Chicago May 29, he had said, “We … know that the climate is warming faster than anybody anticipated five or ten years ago.” He had added, “I don’t have much patience for people who deny climate change.””

What does the ultimate authority on global warming have to say on winters?

An increased frequency of heat waves will increase the risk of death and serious illness, principally in older age groups and the urban poor. The greatest increases in thermal stress are forecast for mid- to high-latitude (temperate) cities, especially in populations with limited air conditioning. Warmer winters and fewer cold spells, because of climate change, will decrease cold-related mortality in many temperate countries.

So, the White House is wrong on the causes of the Polar Vortex and the IPCC is wrong on warmer winters. Hmmmmm. Any claims on the polar vortex breakout being caused by man’s greenhouse gases needs to be published in the scientific journals please. That’s what Warmists insist on so insist on that.

January 27, 2010
…A massive arctic blast plunged through much of the nation’s heartland and into the southeast, bringing with it one of the worst cold snaps Florida has seen in more than 20 years. Record-low temperatures sent farmers scrambling to protect their crops, some unsuccessfully….
…bone-chilling temperatures also took a toll on Florida’s wildlife. More than 100 manatees have been found dead since the beginning of the year, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) said at least 77 of them died from “cold stress.”
Officials also think the cold snap killed thousands of saltwater fish….

I find this documented case of arm waving and excuses very encouraging. The reason is that there will be many more random and excited excuses to follow as the AMO declines in combination with PDO decline, south Atlantic cooling, and solar cycle fall off. Although win-the-day political strategy has the advantage of short time horizons for ridiculous ploys, there will still some cataloging effect taking place to undermine the next attempts to carry on the parade of lies and science fraud by party leaders. (I do not believe in focusing on one leader and administration when party line is the main culprit.) Documenting the intertwined political and politicized science along the way is important to display the timeline of fraud and policy fail as it unravels.

The President is correct. No one weather event proves anything. However, way back in 2000 Dr David Viner of CRU warned that winters are getting warmer and in the future children will not know what snow is. This narrative was repeated ad nauseum through the first half of the decade.
Until it became obvious that the globe no longer was warming, most Alarmists kept to the script. Therefore, it is important that we should point out every major snow event and cold outbreak, and remind the world of the past predictions made by the IPCC and the Alarmists.

Dr. Holdren tells the American people that climate change [global warming] makes extreme weather events [like the cold spell that we just had] more likely. The problem that I see is, what is an “extreme” event ?. Some are suggesting that the current polar vortex breakout is an extreme winter event , like the similar event in January 1985[ 26.37 F] . Yes it was cold , but a check of the NCDC /NOAA records shows that there have been at least 15 cold January ‘s like 1985 January. This year’s average January temperature is not yet available. So perhaps this recent “extreme” event is just an extra colder than normal January that has happened on a fairly frequent basis since 1895 . Some say that the 2010 winter was an extreme event when the cold went all the way to Florida and froze the orange trees [ 30.55F] .. Yet there have been approx .55 January’s as cold as 2010 January since 1895. So what the alarmists now call as ‘extreme’ event winters supposedly are just regular colder winters that we have all forgotten about and are part of our periodic seasonal winter patterns. There is no evidence that these colder winters today or 100 years ago were caused by greenhouse gases generated by man nor are they all extreme events .

The following is from 2009 but I just read it this morning. I know Tim Ball and Sallie Baliunas and they are competent and honorable.
Obama’s Science Czar John Holdren involved in unfolding “Climategate” scandal
By Judi McLeod Tuesday, November 24, 2009
http://www.canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/17183#.UtANO5WA2M8
[excerpt]
Obama Science Czar John Holdren is directly involved in CRU’s unfolding Climategate scandal. In fact, according to files released by a CEU hacker or whistleblower, Holdren is involved in what Canada Free Press (CFP) columnist Canadian climatologist Dr. Tim Ball terms “a truculent and nasty manner that provides a brief demonstration of his lack of understanding, commitment on faith and willingness to ridicule and bully people”.
“The files contain so much material that it is going to take some time t o put it all in context,” says Ball. “However, enough is already known to underscore their explosive nature. It is already clear the entire claims and positions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are based on falsified manipulated material and is therefore completely compromised.
“The fallout will be extensive as material continues to emerge. Reputations of the scientists involved are already destroyed, however fringe players will continue to be identified and their reputations destroyed or sullied.”
While the mainstream media is bending into pretzels to keep the scandal under the rug, Climategate is already the biggest scientific scandal in history because of the global policy implications.
A throwback to the intro of the television series Dragnet, “Ladies and Gentlemen: “The story you are about to hear is true, only the names have been changed to protect the innocent”, the innocent in Climategate have already been thrown to the ravening wolves.
“There is a multitude of small but frightening stories in the massive files,” Ball writes. “For example I’ve known solar physicists Sallie Baliunas and Willie Soon for a long time. I’ve published articles with Willie and enjoyed extensive communication. I was on advisory committees with them when Sallie suddenly and politely withdrew from the fray.
I don’t know if the following events were contributing factors but it is likely. Baliunas and Soon were authors of excellent work confirming the existence of the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) from a multitude of sources.
Their work challenged attempts to get rid of the MWP because it contradicted the claim by the proponents of anthropogenic global warming (AGW). Several scientists challenged the claim that the latter part of the 20th century was the warmest ever. They knew the claim was false, many warmer periods occurred in the past. Michael Mann ‘got rid’ of the MWP with his production of the hockey stick, but Soon and Baliunas were problematic. What better than have a powerful academic destroy their credibility for you? Sadly, there are always people who will do the dirty work.”
Indeed, Holdren’s emails show how sincere scientists would be made into raw “entertainment”.
How the deed was done.
A perfect person and opportunity appeared. On 16th October 2003 Michael Mann, infamous for his lead in the ‘hockey stick’ that dominated the 2001 IPCC Report, sent an email to people involved in the CRU scandal; “
Dear All,
Thought you would be interested in this exchange, which John Holdren of Harvard has been kind enough to pass along… At the time Holdren was Teresa and John Heinz Professor of Environmental Policy & Director, Program in Science, Technology, & Public Policy, Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, John F. Kennedy School of Government. (Editor’s Note: He is now Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, and Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology—informally known as the United States Science Czar. )
““In an email on October16, 2003 from John Holdren to Michael Mann and Tom Wigley we are told:
”“I’m forwarding for your entertainment an exchange that followed from my being quoted in the Harvard Crimson to the effect that you and your colleagues are right and my “Harvard” colleagues Soon and Baliunas are wrong about what the evidence shows concerning surface temperatures over the past millennium. The cover note to faculty and postdocs in a regular Wednesday breakfast discussion group on environmental science and public policy in Harvard’s Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences is more or less self-explanatory.”
The Wednesday Breakfast Group
“This is what Holdren sent to the Wednesday Breakfast group:
“I append here an e-mail correspondence I have engaged in over the past few days trying to educate a Soon/Baliunas supporter who originally wrote to me asking how I could think that Soon and Baliunas are wrong and Mann et al. are right (a view attributed to me, correctly, in the Harvard Crimson). This individual apparently runs a web site on which he had been touting the Soon/Baliunas position.”
“The exchange Holdren refers to is a challenge by Nick Schulz editor of Tech Central Station (TCS). On August 9, 2003 Schulz wrote;
“In a recent Crimson story on the work of Soon and Baliunas, who have written for my website [1 techcentralstation.com, you are quoted as saying: My impression is that the critics are right. It s unfortunate that so much attention is paid to a flawed analysis, but that’s what happens when something happens to support the political climate in Washington. Do you feel the same way about the work of Mann et. al.? If not why not?”
“Holdren provides lengthy responses on October 13, 14, and 16 but comments fail to answer Schulz’s questions. After the first response Schulz replies, “I guess my problem concerns what lawyers call the burden of proof. The burden weighs heavily, much more heavily, given the claims on Mann et.al. than it does on Soon/Baliunas. Would you agree?” Of course, Holdren doesn’t agree. He replies, “But, in practice, burden of proof is an evolving thing-it evolves as the amount of evidence relevant to a particular proposition grows.” No it doesn’t evolve; it is either on one side or the other. This argument is in line with what has happened with AGW. He then demonstrates his lack of understanding of science and climate science by opting for Mann and his hockey stick over Soon and Baliunas. His entire defense and position devolves to a political position. His attempt to belittle Soon and Baliunas in front of colleagues is a measure of the man’s blindness and political opportunism that pervades everything he says or does.
“Schulz provides a solid summary when he writes, “I’ll close by saying I’m willing to admit that, as someone lacking a PhD, I could be punching above my weight. But I will ask you a different but related question.
How much hope is there for reaching reasonable public policy decisions that affect the lives of millions if the science upon which those decisions must be made is said to be by definition beyond the reach of those people?”
“We now know it was deliberately placed beyond the reach of the people by the group that he used to ridicule Soon and Baliunas. Holdren was blinded by his political views, which as his record shows are frightening. One web site synthesizes his position on over-population as follows, “Forced abortions. Mass sterilization. A “Planetary Regime” with the power of life and death over American citizens.”
“Holdren has a long history of seeking total government control. He was involved in the Club of Rome providing Paul Ehrlich with the scientific data in his bet with Julian Simon. Ehrlich lost the bet. Holdren’s behavior in this sorry episode with Soon and Baliunas is too true to form and shows the leopard never changes his spots,” Ball concludes.
Meanwhile, even with an AWOL mainstream media, the Climategate snakes continue to slither out from under the rocks.

Those government produced videos make me feel like I am living in George Orwell’s 1984 being fed doublespeak. They must be really running scared that their scam is unravelling. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_qEpsa7Swo

The following is from 2009 but I just read it this morning.

Thanks for that bit of information. Every time you think it can’t get any worse it does. Holdren is a complete sleaze and yet he holds an influential office.
