House of Commons: In October, the Energy and Climate Change Committee of the U.K. House of Commons requested comments on the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The request included specific questions such as how robust are the conclusions, how much scope is there to questions the report’s conclusions, what areas need further effort to reduce the levels of uncertainty? This week the Committee published some of the responses.
In general, institutions such as the Royal Meteorological Society and the Royal Society supported the AR5. A number of independent groups did not. Craig Idso, Bob Carter, Fred Singer, and Willie Soon submitted comments on behalf of the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC). The comments referenced the NIPCC reports and were severely critical of AR5. The criticisms include that the conclusions are not robust, a proper scientific investigation has not been conducted, the hypotheses are not falsifiable, the IPCC has not provided proof that recent global warming/climate change is beyond the range of natural variability, thus the IPCC has failed to meet the burden of proof that humans are the cause. Further, the IPCC ignores the work of many who disagree with its reports.
Independent climate researcher Nicholas Lewis uses the opportunity to extensively discuss the sensitivity of the climate to increasing carbon dioxide (CO2). Under a heading of “Poor experimental design and unsuitable data, Lewis asserts there are major problems with the estimates of the influence of aerosols (small particles or liquid droplets in the atmosphere that may be of natural or human origin) to include estimating the influence aerosols from global temperature data. [Since temperature data is used to estimate the influence of CO2, the influence of aerosols must be estimated separately.]
Richard Lindzen uses the opportunity to challenge the entire process. Given the destructive, expensive and corrupting nature of the proposed (or, alas, implemented) policies (as well as their demonstrable irrelevance to climate) leaves one with a disturbing view of the proposed agenda. It would appear that the privileged members of the global society regard as dogma that the rest of humanity is a blight on the planet, and all effort should be devoted to preventing their economic improvement and development.
Lindzen attaches a prior paper Falsification of climate models used in experimentation and scenario construction. The introduction in the paper underscores the major problems in the approach of the IPCC and those entities that are categorized as the climate establishment: The notion of ‘falsification’ plays a central role in science when applied to a theory which is a coherent chain of reasoning where each step depends on the preceding step. Theories frequently lead to models, but, unfortunately, climate models do not constitute a theory. Rather, the models at issue are attempts to solve the relevant equations for motion, energy, composition, etc. using numerical methods with inadequate resolution, where unresolved processes like boundary layer turbulence, convection, clouds, gravity waves, etc. are parameterized. The parameterizations are generally ad hoc devices designed to behave in a manner that is thought to be appropriate where ‘appropriate’ sometimes simply means that the parameterization is designed to compensate for obvious model problems. In addition, fundamental model inputs such as aerosol distributions and properties, solar forcing, and even the radiative forcing by important greenhouse gases are, at best, only approximate, and are sometimes almost completely unknown. In the latter case, they become little more than adjustable parameters. The problem, from the perspective of ‘falsification’ is that the resulting models get many things demonstrably wrong, but that does not mean that they get everything wrong. Thus, it is possible that though models may fail to predict something like global mean temperature over extended periods of time, they might still be right concerning the long term impact of greenhouse gases. Falsification, thus, does not simply mean showing that models fail for many things, but rather that specific aspects of the models are wrong. With respect to climate concerns, there are several aspects that are of central importance:
1) The sensitivity of global mean temperature anomaly to increasing greenhouse forcing.
2) The relation of global mean temperature anomaly to the various other features that are the current focus of much of our climate change concerns: extreme weather, sea level rise, etc.
It should be noted that the above concern models for which increases in greenhouse gases have been specified, and do not specifically concern the origins of these increases. There may be legitimate questions as to how much of the increase is due to emissions, but these are not addressed in the present context.
In short, climate science as proclaimed by the IPCC is a morass where what is scientific knowledge cannot be easily separated from speculation and what is wrong. The links to these responses and more are found under U.K. Parliament: Seeking a Common Ground.

Enter the PNAS: The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) is publishing a special feature on climate impacts. The introductory piece starts with the fable of how blind men describe an elephant if each one can only touch a piece of it. Supposedly bringing these pieces together will illuminate us on the dire impacts from global warming/climate change. It states: By all accounts the impacts on our physical environment and society would be starkly different in our planet warmed by “just” 2ºC, by a “dangerous 4ºC, or by a “mind-boggling 6-8 ºC. The article announces the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISI-PIP).
The project includes more than 30 research teams from 12 countries systematically comparing state-of-the-art computer simulations of climate change impacts on a broad range of sectors. The effort is coordinated by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany whose director is Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, a co-author of several of the articles, including the one quoted above.
The first article on water scarcity gives a flavor of what can be expected. “Here we use a large ensemble of global hydrological models (GHMs) forced by five global climate models and the latest greenhouse-gas concentration scenarios (Representative Concentration Pathways) to synthesize the current knowledge about climate change impacts on water resources. We show that climate change is likely to exacerbate regional and global water scarcity considerably. In particular, the ensemble average projects that a global warming of 2 ºC above present (approximately 2.7 ºC above preindustrial) will confront an additional approximate 15% of the global population with a severe decrease in water resources…” [Boldface added]
In short, speculation from computer models that have not been validated is called knowledge. As John Christy emphasized last week, all groups of models overestimate the warming trends over the tropics by some 2 to 5 times. Rather than undergoing the difficult, but rewarding, task of validating a global climate model, the new effort will just add to the morass. Oscillations: German scientists H. Luedecke and C.O. Weiss had an interesting post on Watts Up With That in which they assert that 2 separate cycles can account for virtually all the global temperature change since about 1750. The cycles are the 65 year cycle called the Atlantic/Pacific oscillation (AMO/PDO) and a 200+ year cycle of solar activity. Based on their analysis the authors state the maximum warming influence of doubling of atmospheric CO2 would be 0.1° to 0.2° (C?). If correct, this renders the entire global warming/climate change apparatus obsolete. The historic part of the work was published by Climate of the Past.
Anthony Watts urges caution when considering the claim. All too often, scrupulous work turns out to be a curve fitting exercise. A tight statistical fit does not need to apply into the future.
In correspondence, Apollo scientist Harold Doiron said he found an approximately 62 year cycle in the surface temperature data published by the Hadley Centre and the Climatic Research Unit (HadCRUT4). Starting in 1850, the HadCRUT4 is a shorter data set than the central European one used by the German scientists. Doiron is focusing on an upper bound analysis on the maximum possible warming impact from a doubling of atmospheric CO2, which he estimates is about 1.5-1.6 ºC, or at the lower end of the range published by the IPCC of 1.5-4.5 ºC. Doiron is circulating his work among The Right Climate Stuff research team and hopes to publish it early next year. Would PNAS publish such an upper bound analysis after publishing statements such as: society would be starkly different in our planet warmed by “just” 2ºC, by a “dangerous 4ºC, or by a “mind-boggling 6-8 ºC?
The US Global Change Research Program has a budget in excess of $2 Billion, yet US government funded scientists have failed to perform an upper bound analysis. That retired scientists such as Doiron are doing this needed work speaks volumes on the quality of government funded climate science. TWTW will discuss Doiron’s critical work when it is finished. How Low Can NOAA Go? This week NOAA announced that, globally, November 2013 was the hottest November in 134 years of record keeping. A quick look at the monthly atmospheric temperatures published by the University of Alabama at Huntsville shows this claim is false.
NOAA and the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) have repeatedly lowered historic US temperature records (such as the 1930s) so their pronouncements about temperature history cannot be accepted. Writing in ICECAP, following his amusing poem, Joe Bastardi of WeatherBELL Analytics states what he thinks of NOAA’s latest. EPA: John Beale, a senior regulator at EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation, which develops policies and regulations regarding air pollution and global warming/climate change, was sentenced to prison for theft of government property and impersonating a CIA officer. How he bilked the EPA for years, including under the current Administrator, is fascinating reading.
Beale’s dishonesty should not be ascribed to EPA employees in general. However, the agency has developed a cult-like mission of regulation, without ever questioning the scientific basis for said regulations. This started under the first Administrator, William Ruckelshaus, who banned DDT on the claim it causes cancer in humans without adequate scientific evidence. It is doubtful that Beale’s conduct will serve to improve the attitudes at the EPA. See Article # 3 and links under EPA and other Regulators on the March

Stiff Upper Lip: Last week TWTW commented that the UK Climate Change Committee insists that the UK continue its disastrous energy policy, which is driving up costs to those who can afford it the least. Writing in the Mail, David Rose reports that four of the nine-person Climate Change Committee, official watchdog that dictates green energy policy, are, or were until recently, being paid by firms that benefit from committee decisions. It is easier to keep a stiff upper lip when being well-paid. See link under Questioning European Green.

Number of the Week: 80%. In its early release summary of the Annual Energy Outlook 2014, the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that fossil fuels will continue to provide 80%, or more, of US primary energy consumption to 2040. Renewables (except biofuels) will provide an estimated 10% in 2040, up from 8% now. The wind, solar, etc. industries are not happy with the report. It is refreshing to read a report that is not overly influenced by the administration and political trends. EIA apparently realizes that unreliable, expensive electricity is abhorrent to consumers.

I note the comment on “Science and Religion: As discussed in last week’s TWTW, it has become fashionable among some politicians and climate alarmists to question the religious attitudes of skeptics.”
I have to say that I have been an atheist for 50 years or so. Nevertheless I do not think that the catastrophism which many think is attendant upon global warming is in fact justified.
If one wishes to be brutally frank: just because one is wrong about one thing does not make one wrong about another unrelated thing. So, whether one is a theist or an atheist, and no matter which particular ‘brand’ of theism or atheism one espouses, that is irrelevant to the truth or otherwise of one’s ideas on any other subject. It is absurd to conflate these beliefs with someone’s position on the matter of climate – and that goes for any side of the debate.

Since the atmospheric moisture increases with warmth, and plants become more efficient users of water with heightened CO2, this statement seems to be counterfactual on the face.

Solomon et al [1] indicates stratospheric water vapour declined ~10% in the decade following ~1998, and Vonder Haar et al [2] shows no evident trend- or possibly slightly negative – over the same period.

So despite an ~8% increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration over that period, it seems that there has been no concomitant increase in either atmospheric water vapour or surface temperature, hence causing some problem for the water driven positive feedback hypothesis.

Now THAT’s a study that only Heartland would fund – and then be discredited for.
And Merry Christmas to all the moderators. They have to read what we all post.
‘…So let’s sing a song of cheer again, HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN!’ 3rd quarter GDP growth numbers came in at 4.1%! Wowwee zowwee that’s something we’ve rarely seen since the ‘Quail Dynasty’ brothers Nixon, Sam Walton and Ronnie Reagan set about the crushing of our economy to the benefit of 1% of Americans. In the old days of New Deal Keynesian economics this level of growth was normal. Conservatives wish you to believe that such a number just simply isn’t possible without slashing taxes on the wealthy. The Chinese have been maintaining a pace two or three times that for decades following New Deal, or more accurately, Alexander Hamilton policies.
The Chinese are big fans of our Founding Fathers and it has really paid off for them. The USA went from Samuel Slater’s cotton-spinning mill to undisputed industrial power of the world with Hamilton’s policies enacted by Congress in 1792. China has gone from steam engines to landing a rover on the moon in just 30 years or so. They will progress in ways we can’t even imagine during this century.
There are 33 countries that do better for their children than we do. But we do rank above Romania in child poverty. China still has an awful lot of poor people, but they have more middle class than the USA even has people. A smart kid in China will get a world class education, no ifs ands or buts about it. Odds are in the US the parents pay for it. So we have a lot of Dubya types at Harvard and Einstein types doing unskilled labor. We need to find a way back to making stuff or become a group of colonies for the predominant industrial power like we were prior to 1776.
That got me to investigating our infrastructure, Google it and up pops all kinds of sink holes and pipeline ruptures. You may remember last spring a large sink hole opened up a few blocks from the White House, it turned out to be a washed out crumbling sewer line from an improvement project back in …1896. This is not an unusual event for cities that depend on drainage projects done during the Progressive Era or at best New Deal. As little as possible has been done since the Reagan Revolution defined ‘government is the problem, not the solution.’
The estimated 3 trillion public infrastructure maintenance shortfall (like bridges that could collapse) doesn’t include stuff such as an oil wave rushing up your driveway from a bursted pipeline, like happened in Mayflower, or old high pressure Nat Gas lines that are ticking time bombs. There are abandoned chemical waste dumps, overlooked and failing mine waste containment ponds and unregulated fertilizer and chemical plants waiting to explode. Then there’s old nuclear reactors.
‘But we don’t have any money for that’ whine the conservative. Fact is that the US government can and should buy any and all unused production and put it to use. 20 million full time jobs could be created next week. US factory production is running around 80% capacity, buy everything they produce that can be used to improve US infrastructures. You can bet if Uncle Sam accepted bids somebody would step up to the plate to produce it. Factories would go to 200% of capacity from 80.
Where would the money come from? The US is selling treasuries at near zero interest, failing that we can print our own money. As long as the creation of money doesn’t exceed the supply of goods and services there can be no serious inflation. They take money out of supply to fix inflation and add money to combat deflation. Building the economy will produce the revenue to ‘pay it back’ especially if the rich are no longer allowed to dodge taxes. That alone brings in an additional 1T per year without even addressing offshore or corporate tax evasion. The death tax? Don’t wait for them to croak to take back the excesses of the last thirty years.
Of course you would need to do all the other things that are required for a successful economy. Trade, financial, energy, manufacturing, farm and education policies. You get the idea, put smart people in charge and tell the extremists to sit down and shut up. That is the ones that you don’t put in prison orange jump suits and there are plenty that deserve a stint.
So much for what we should be doing, let’s look at what is really happening in terms of us becoming third world. A company from The Peoples Republic bought our biggest pork producer, Smithfield Farms. Gee, why would they want to do that? The Chinese love pork and since they have more middle class people than we have people they need more bacon, ribs and chops. It takes corn to fatten up nice pigs and our farmers produce a lot of corn. China has as many acres devoted to corn as we do but half the yield. They would like to shift that land to other crops and get one of their colonies to raise the hogs. That would be us!
Factory farm pork production has actually been leaving because manure runoff has been a problem downstream. A large pork farm can produce the same sewage of a mid size city and the preferred methods of disseminating the waste is in holding ponds waiting for the next big rains to flush it downstream. The Chinese actually do a better job with this because they don’t have a Quail Dynasty inventing an EPA and a EDF, and maybe it’s one of those ‘free trade deals’ that state and local governments cannot interfere.
Where did the money come from to buy Smithfield? They didn’t pay in Chinese Yuans. Just as they don’t loan us money like the Cons want us to believe, they bought it with US dollars from the $700b yearly trade deficit we run. Every time you shop at Wal~Mart you assist China in taking over the world. Remember when we used to fight communism? Well they won thanks to the Conservatives.

Just ignore Limbaugh, his version of even conservatism is over the top. Rush is neither a fundamentalist nor a fascist. He doesn’t have an ounce of Christian charity in his corpulent body. With respect to government, he doesn’t seem to favor a strong national government except for national defense, instead he sounds like he wants a weak, decentralized government and wants to see the real power invested in THE PRIVATE SECTOR, especially the wealthy elite who run large private sector businesses.
The noise machine over at Faux News is losing it and they know it. Maybe that’s why they peddle so many books nowadays. Republican disapproval is range bound in the 70% range. Obama is down in the polls and with Millennials, but they still say they’d vote for him again.
So to wrap up, the economy is looking much better, too bad Wall Street can still kill it. A brand new dollar store opens in the US every 6 hours, that’s where Wal~Mart associates shop. Duck Commander is worth $15b, he’s either trying to hit the big money or crazy or both. Bit Coin, when being suckered by penny stocks and/or gold isn’t enough losses for you.

“Where would the money come from?” That was the problem faced by Guernsey (one of the UK Channel Islands) when all the conscripted soldiers returned from the Napoleonic Wars in 1820.
There was only one industry on the Island – fishing, but with no harbour or fish market, poverty and starvation loomed. But there were many willing and able workers, so the States of Guernsey (the local government) with no other option open to them decided to issue their own local currency to kick-start employment – The Guernsey Pound was born. It’s still going strong today.
The harbour got built as did the fish market and also many roads, schools, hospitals and churches. The money was issued interest-free so it circulated amongst all businesses who used it to pay their (low) taxes to The States of Guernsey. Inflation and deflation were easily controlled by adjusting money in circulation. Everyone was happy.
Then the Bank of England came down on this heretical idea like a ton of bricks; they were acting on complaints from established banks on Guernsey who could not compete with interest-free currency… Well there’s a surprise! But the Guernsey Pound was so well established and appreciated by the Islanders that it was not possible to eliminate it, agreement was reached just to restrict the amount in circulation.
The “Guernsey Experiment” is one of the main reasons why the Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark) are the most prosperous areas of the UK today.
Well, I know that the list of articles included in this post is, like really long and interesting and all that good stuff. But the one thing I’ve been lookin’ for, that I think is critical to the “climate” debate, and all, is once again missing from the “menu.”
Let me be frank and say that I’ve been holding off on this matter, hoping that I wouldn’t have to be so crude to just come out and explicitly inquire about the whole deal and that the other “shoe” would just fall of its own accord, and everything. But now I’m beginning to wonder enough to, once-and-for-all, just address the whole, unresolved issue straight-out.
I mean, like, remember that guy from the Philippines at that boondoggle, eco-fiasco conference, held in Warsaw, a month or two ago? You know, the one who vowed to fast until some sort of climate agreement was reached, or something like that. Remember him?
Well the conference went on for almost two weeks and I, for one (and I know I’m not alone), was really hoping for a super-sized, breathless, daily-update, heart-wrenching photo-record of the the guy’s fast, that would rival that iconic image of a forlorn, baby-harp-seal-eating, photo-shopped polar bear on an ice-floe that our beloved hive has gotten such great, hyped mileage out of . You know, like day-one, a picture showing there’s hardly any difference in the guy’s appearance until day 13 of his fast when he has that sunken-cheek, death’s-head, Egyptian-mummy look hunger-strikers acquire over time. And, you know, with, like, a bunch of agit-prop shots about how many notches the guy has taken-in in his belt and clothes hanging off his emaciated frame and everything. I mean, like, a hunger-strike is a PR stunt–I think we can all agree with that. So where’s the “publicity” on this one–SO WHERE’S THE PHOTOS?!!!!!
And I probably wouldn’t have even mentioned this whole business if the fake-skeptic, anti-science, Republican-brain, Merchants-of-Doubt, flat-earther, complete-asshole deniers, with their incessant little conspiracy-theory “ideations” haven’t been picking up on the whole thing and making their typical, stupid, little jokes about it, like:
-“Hey!–Maybe the guy looked a little bit too “well-fed” there, at the end, and so maybe the hive-propagandists thought whole deal would look like a bunch of flim-flam if a photo of the guy was released [like those bad-faith denier-scum have never even heard of the rare genetic condition that gives some persons the look of sleek, well-fed chubby-ness despite an advanced state of starvation]!”
-Hey!–maybe the NGO hot-babes were slippin’ the guy cheese-burgers and freedom fries when they visited his carbon-piggie, luxurious, executive suite! HAR! HAR!”
-Hey!–I bet the guy was so weak, towards the end, that he could hardly even fire off an idle, lazy afternoon’s bolide or two of zit-crud into his hotel-bathroom-mirror reflection, even! SNICKER! SNICKER!”
Of course, I can ignore denier, so-called “humor”, as well as anyone else, but like the problem is that regular people–I mean, like, people who aren’t, in any way, denier-creeps–are beginning to pick-up on this matter and are even responding to the denier’s truly vicious, fossil-fuel-industry-funded, malicious, juvenile humor. I mean, like, of course, everyone tries to hide their reaction, but I’m seein’ more and more examples of ordinary people–you know, the sort who used to absent-mindedly go along with the whole CAGW hustle, and everything–like suddenly holding their breath, when the repugnant deniers start joshing around about the that no-chow, noble gesture that added such a touch of class to the Warsaw proceedings, and then, like, making a bee-line dash for the bathroom and then you, like, hear a big-outburst of guffaws from behind the closed door–that sort of thing.
So could someone please publish a photo-journalism, chronological series of photos of that Filipino guy’s xerophagia-for-Gaia ordeal so I can get take the tacky deniers, who are always taunting me about the whole-thing with their pestiferous, snide, little innuendos, down a notch? Thanks for any help you can offer!

P. S. There is a “Victoria Bidwell” that I’ve found on the web who claims to have received a Ph.D.–both in “Natural Hygiene”– from each of two institutions of higher learning. One Ph.D. was received from the “University of Natural Health” (perhaps an on-line outfit?) and the other from the “College of Life Science” (haven’t been able to figure this one out–several candidate institutions with approximately that title). So, ed, is the above “Victoria Bidwell” related to the Victoria Bidwell in your link?–and, if so, could you tell us a bit more about these academic institutions that awarded her a coveted “Ph.D.” degree? O. K. guy?
Sure, Mike, I don’t know where to start. I was having some health problems back in 2007 and a woman appeared in my life. Not Victoria Bidwell but someone who knows her well and studied Natural Hygiene with her from T.C. Fry and thusly under Dr. Herbert M. Shelton. If you Google them, I believe they are the ones who founded those institutions. They were using fasting to cure various health problems related to toxicity within your body. It was controversial because it didn’t use the medical establishment and their drugs.
My tumors disappeared with a six week fast and a change of diet to much more raw fruits, nuts and vegetables and I lost sixty pounds of overweight. The experience of fasting improved my life and probably saved me. I used what I had learned about fasting from this woman on my own without anyone’s supervision.
I just desire to spread the word about this way of improving your health and since Victoria Bidwell has a treasure trove of information I link to her site. I have no business interests in natural hygiene. She and I have never communicated, but the lady who came into my life was regularly talking to her. She gave me a lot of material written by Dr. Herbert M Shelton and T. C. Fry.
Would you recommend I change it to this instead?
