Mannic hypocrisy – How much should Michael Mann pay?

Since Michael Mann seems fond of fossil fueled trips like this one:

Mike Mann, Stephan Rahmstorf, Kari Norgard at the rift between continental plates in southern Iceland.

Big in Reykjavik | Climate Denial Crock of the Week

And since he agrees people who use fossil fuels (carbon polluters) should pay:

mann_payforhurrincanes

(click image for the Tweet at Twitter)

How much should his bill be for all the travels he’s made by air? Here’s a few more examples:

========================================================

Warmist Michael Mann takes fossil-fueled trip to oil-funded Oklahoma State,then suggests that fossil fuel companies are evil because their products cause bad weather

Climatology professor talks change, research

Mann, a professor of climatology at Pennsylvania State University, spoke of the research and challenges he has compiled and faced as a scientist before a room of about 430 people in the ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center.

========================================================

Mann at Orange County Water Conference – emotional presentation, polar bears threatened, still thinks snows of Kilimanjaro are receding due to ‘climate change’

========================================================

Penn State climate scientist Michael Mann

Michael Mann on a Tundra Buggy looking for polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba, 2010.  Source: Michael Mann

========================================================

And he’s still at it, pushing his book:

Climate Researcher Michael Mann to Speak Oct. 22 at Ohio Wesleyan University

Author to Discuss ‘The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars’ as Part of 2013 Sagan National Colloquium

========================================================

Unless Dr. Mann can show he didn’t use fossil fuels to get to any of these destinations, he’s nothing but a hypocrite.

I’d hate to see weepy Bill McKibben’s bill for all his air travel.

On the list of paradoxes, not many beat flying around the world to give talks about climate change.

Science would be best served by ridiculing, exposing, and prosecuting this pathetic little man.
We are not engaged in a scientific discussion or debate with Mann and his ilk. They understand that this is a communications/information battle.
They know that and waging the battle full strength. See Mann’s last book. Nothing to do with science, and all to do with “communications.”
Until proof of Mann’s fraudulent “research” is uncovered, and until he and his co-dependent employers are forced to pay back any fraudulently received funds, he will continue to live the life of a Mafioso don. In your face, blatant catch-me-if-you-can flamboyance.
A whistleblowing grad student from his lab, or the IT guy who ran his “statistics” would be perfect to reveal all of Mann’s machinations.
It’s coming–slowly.

Assuming this is the article he’s hyping:
http://www.takepart.com/article/2013/10/11/group-calls-levy-carbon-emissions-offset-hurricane-damages
”Human-induced warming from carbon emissions has raised global sea levels by about one foot since 1990, Penn State climatologist Michael Mann said last year.”
Mann apparently didn’t read the article he’s touting. Surely, M. Mann knows better than that. You’d have to generously round up to call the sea level rise from 1890 “one foot” at about 20 centimeters (0.66 ft), but there’s no way to reconcile one foot from 1990 that’s @ more like 5 centimeters or 0.16 feet.comment image
The article goes on to say ”the group is calling on the federal government to create an “Extreme Weather Relief and Protection Fund,” paid for in part by companies that “pollute carbon.”
OMG! So, let’s say YOU didn’t use electricity; then the electric company wouldn’t have to make electricity for YOU. It is for YOU (and the rest of us that want a modern standard of living) that the electric company makes electricity, not for sh!t$ and giggles.

You just don’t understand. Mr. Mann is a preeminent climate scientist. One whose work will save the planet. As one of the true elite, his travels are necessary for his scientific mission to save the planet, therefore his carbon footprint cannot be counted. You mere mortals need to understand this. The elite do loftier things to save the planet. As such, their stuff don’t stink.
Besides, if I could find someone to pay for my T&L for those exotic trips, I’d really happily go on them.

But I’d rather not justify it, and I’d rather not fly. So in recent years I’ve learned to tell an increasing number of the people who ask me to speak (about ten a day, most days) that the only way I can “be” there is via Skype video.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bill-mckibben/skype-bill-mckibben_b_962711.html

That was back in 2011. Here is what McKibben’s 350.org has done since.

“In November 2012, following publication of his Rolling Stone article, Global Warming’s Terrifying New Math, Bill McKibben and 350.org hit the road in the USA to build a movement strong enough to change the terrifying math of the climate crisis. The Do the Math Tour was a massive success, with sold out shows in every corner of the country.
Now the tour is going global — first to Australia, then to New Zealand, Fiji, and beyond!

And what else.

Sydney Morning Herald – April 8, 2013
Mr McKibben, the author of the first mainstream book about global warming, The End of Nature, will visit Australia in June to galvanise local campaigns for action against climate change. He is travelling to Australia with 350.org, the group he helped found in 2008.

I agree with Bob and a few others above – this is no longer a scientific debate and we are entitled to fight back as necessary. Since the alarmists have chosen to duck entirely the scientific debate and go straight in for political activism and smear I feel we are obliged to respond.
It turns out that for the vast clueless masses out there image is important and we have allowed ourselves to be portrayed as luddites and flat earthers because we have been trying to fight a political battle with science.

Greetings from a country about to experience uncertain climate. I won’t encourage ridicule like this on a respectable website like this. Given the usual “press pounding” low-climate-sensitivity proponents receive, we could all point to inconsistencies between the high-climate-sensitivity proponents’ actions and their message. However, such an approach is flawed since it lends partial credence for their message (eg the Imam got drunk dilemma). By calling people for their hypocrisy you convey to them some sort of apparent authority.

@Anthony Watts – For WUWT fundraising purposes, the 2014 WUWT Calendar could be devoted to “public figure” Michael Mann, where each 2014 Calendar month would have a photo of him in a different exotic location with a caption describing details like: date, event, distance from Penn State to that location, swag of CO2 emitted due to travel, guest-imated speaking fee received from either BigGreen or BigOilWashedGreen (e.g. BP Oil). IANAL so I don’t know if such good natured making fun a “public figure” would constitute stalking, harassment, ridicule, etc. Better still if all those photos are from “public events” before the alleged “libel” incidents of Mann occurred. Perhaps send complimentary copies to the various legal teams involved with the court cases involving the alleged “libel” of Mann.

October 12, 2013 5:29 pm

In an earlier era, some hypocrites at least had style and humor:

In 1952, Armon M. Sweat, Jr., a member of the Texas House of Representatives, was asked about his position on whisky. What follows is his exact answer (taken from the Political Archives of Texas):
“If you mean whisky, the devil’s brew, the poison scourge, the bloody monster that defiles innocence, dethrones reason, destroys the home, creates misery and poverty, yea, literally takes the bread from the mouths of little children; if you mean that evil drink that topples Christian men and women from the pinnacles of righteous and gracious living into the bottomless pit of degradation, shame, despair, helplessness, and hopelessness, then, my friend, I am opposed to it with every fiber of my being.
However, if by whisky you mean the lubricant of conversation, the philosophic juice, the elixir of life, the liquid that is consumed when good fellows get together, that puts a song in their hearts and the warm glow of contentment in their eyes; if you mean Christmas cheer, the stimulating sip that puts a little spring in the step of an elderly gentleman on a frosty morning; if you mean that drink that enables man to magnify his joy, and to forget life’s great tragedies and heartbreaks and sorrow; if you mean that drink the sale of which pours into Texas treasuries untold millions of dollars each year, that provides tender care for our little crippled children, our blind, our deaf, our dumb, our pitifully aged and infirm, to build the finest highways, hospitals, universities, and community colleges in this nation, then my friend, I am absolutely, unequivocally in favor of it.
This is my position, and as always, I refuse to compromise on matters of principle.

Sláinte.

Can someone explain to me what that scientific contraption is that’s hanging down from, around Rahmstorf’s neck? It looks like a camera to me but, no, it can’t be. Maybe it’s a mini, portable, ancient pine tree bore hole driller to get tree ring samples from the nonexistent ancient pine trees of Iceland. I mean, these world class, intrepid, world saving saviors would never possibly think of recreating (got that NPS?) while they’re on a taxpayer funded climate junk…er, I meant junket. So that couldn’t be a camera to take pretty pictures of dramatic picturesque Iceland could it? I’m certain they realize there’s a government shutdown and that there’s no recreating allowed.

When I fly, my carbon footprint is zilch – 2 weeks ago, I was on a plane to Italy. Now, that plane would fly to Italy back and forth 3 times a day anyway. So really, not flying wouldn’t make a difference 😉
Seriously though: While I am not sure about the truth of this claim, it has been said that, say, flying from Germany to Spain on a regular flight is more economical than driving by car.
Whether or not that is true, I find this kind of Mann-post, which seems to be so popular around here, childish and undignifying (for Mr Watts in particular).
Yes, flying anywhere will result in some more CO2. But so does EVERYTHING. Even Mann – or Watts – scratching his a** can be shown to result in a little more CO2. Now what. Are they supposed to kill themselves? We live in a world where there are planes, and asking anybody to not use one but walk across the country instead is retarded. And I mean that literally. Think about it. Are there no more substantial things to say about Mann, CO2 and climate change as a whole? How can you be so obsessed with this bunkum?
Jumping on non-events like this just makes you look like the rampant horde foaming from the mouth that critics are sometimes suggested to be.
Mann flying for work, talks, (and even hols) etc is perfectly fine and every sane person should understand that. On the other hand, there are true excesses that never get picked on, e.g. Al Gore having a 30.000 dollar energy bill, “150 cars” and a heated pool, etc. While the world keeps spinning just fine it you and I keep boarding the occasional flight, it is clear that not everybody can afford the life-style of Gore, and I don’t even mean that financially. And I am not a commie, who wants to take Mr Gore’s toys away – rock your socks off, dude. It’s only, unlike Mann, Mr Gore is truely not in a position to preach in so many ways. I can see the difference, too bad you can’t.
Has anybody contacted Mann to ask whether he off-sets his footprint, e.g. by clicking the appropriate box when booking a flight, or planting a tree, or not farting for a day? No? Because you should before writing an article like this.

I have stood where they are standing. It is called “bingvellir” and was chosen by the early Icelanders as the place for their meeting place and parliament. They had no idea what it represented but could feel, as I did, the awesome presence of something unique hidden there.You can stand astride a chasm and have a foot in two continents. Beneath the world is sundered by a force that drove Europe and America 4000 miles apart. Did these three feel this and reflect on their belief that mankind’s tiny impact on the world through changes in a trace gas was so compelling?
Judging by their expressions I don’t think so.

I really think he should be hand feeding a polar bear with faux meat (made with vegetables.) Bit like my latest cocktail-the “polar bear”- milk, ice cream, ice cubes, creme de cacao(or Mozart chocolate liqueur), frangelico, baileys irish cream. Garnish-strawberry(analogue of a Greenie that cuddled up to a polar bear.)The swizzle stick is a plastic hockey stick(made a couple of hundred from scrap perspex scrounged from a perspex sign maker.) Perhaps he should have had Bob Brown there too, so we could serve up the “Boo-hoo Brown’s global warming cooler”-pink grapefruit juice, grenadine(gives a richer pink/red colour and boosts the flavour), soda, gin,vodka,.ice . Sprinkling of mint leaves on the top to give the illusion of being green on the outside. Garnish-cube of watermelon. “Bottoms up!”

Mr Mann (I refuse to acknowledge any of his assignations) is just a marketing man.Nothing more nothing less.He reminds me of a guy called John Fredericks who set up and ran an organisation called the National Safety Council in Australia, that drained millions out of the public purse and conned federal and state governments, media, public,employees and even his own family. My guess is Mann will end the same way.

National safety Council was a scam based on a sea of lies. Classic habitual liar-lies to support lies, to support lies. then one day you find an inconsistency and realize the whole lot is a load of BS and you have been scammed.The more illustrious sounding the vehicle of the scammer, the longer the scam persists and the higher the stakes.The UN, who Mann makes his BS for and probably funds is the grandest scam of history. The stakes are not so much money as power and control-total power and total control of humanity.Mann (and the IPCC for that matter) are so deep in their own s%&t they have to keep lying to stop drowning in it. They will lie to the bitter end and beyond-till hell freezes over so to speak.

Remember Al Gore’s private jet travels to give talks? I always wondered why, if the talk content was so important for humanity, he did not upload them in Youtube… so much CO2 could have been saved 😉

Got a problem with freedom of expression much, Matt? Are you a rent seeker yourself? I ask because you defend the rent-seekers.

on my post at 1.10am I could have pointed to the irony of Mann being hosted by a nation that only exists because of the medieval warm period and just survived the little ice age, unlike their kin in Greenland. The weakened people were nearly exterminated, 3 times by disease and once by volcano. They boast of the largest geo-thermal establishment on earth, the cost of which may be dire if Loki should awake. This might account for the Icelandic characteristics of great fortitude and pessimism. It seems that greens are in evidence there though why any would want to stop global warming escapes me. It must be the beer – which is very good and strong. I can recommend “Black Death Ale”.

You’ve missed the moral superiority people like Mann and Gore feel they have. It’s not about hypocrisy to them, they are true believers who have lost objectivity and are justified because they are doing the “Work of Angels”. For them it is forgiven and all debts cancelled, because if they don’t do what needs to be done, who will? This requires some necessary evils.
I wonder what kind of organic (plastic) fibers that fancy blue coat is made of? I need to get me one of those…

When I was in school one of my teachers took the class on a field trip to his home in the Sierra Foothills. He had a mansion built on the side of a hill, with a wonderful panorama window overlooking the Sacramento Valley.
Being the son of a sailor I was used to military housing. This was a culture shock for me.
Mr. Smith was the richest man I’d ever been around. Just an average fourth grade teacher!
There have been many decades filled with embarassingly successful CalTeachersAssoc. campaigns to “pay teachers what they are worth” since then.
I can only imagine the opulent amounts of money that is showered on a politically useful amoral conartist/professor of crimatology like Michael Mann.
Maybe we can crowd source to find out.
Does Michael Mann live in a bucolic countryside mansion on the backs of the public, like the plantation owners of old?
I bet you he does. I bet he has a garage full of cars, and a built in swimming pool.
I bet the lifestyle he has become accustomed to would be an embarassment if it were to become widely known.
So how to pull the curtain back

“Michael Mann on a Tundra Buggy looking for polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba, 2010. Source: Michael Mann”

Research? No, not likely; tundra buggy’s are used for the paying tourists. Tundra buggy day trips. Tundra buggy relative sizes are meant to keep silly warmists safe. Apparently ‘threatened polar bears’ are empty speeches, no happy polar bears at the end of his trip.
Then again, what are the options to Manniacal jetting around the world?
Walking? Serious moral collapse in his wake; rise in suicides, empty towns…
Train? Pity the poor commuters, rail travelers and major impacts to rail transport of food and gear…
Hitchhike? No one will ever pick up a hitchhiker ever again…
Tramp steamer or slow boat to china? Ruination to a sailor’s solace of the seas, horrors! Thrown overboard and who could help the sealife in time?
Perhaps he should be restricted to staying under his own excrement pile far from civilization? Is Chiron far enough? I’m led to believe that hot air is needed there.
Oh, the NASA link to Chiron is currently held hostage by POTUS and his hoodlums, try it after the government decides they serve us again.

Stop harassing the Mann, he is and was the best opponent of the UN manufactured CAGW to surface so far.
Every time he speaks the scam is undermined some more, do your patriotic duty, flatter this Mann, encourage his public pronouncements, for like Al Gore and Saint Suzuki, he will destroy the phoney environmentalists, greedy self publicists and their politician sycophants in his attempts to promote their cause.
If this caricature of a government scientist did not exist, would sceptical rational inquirers have had the imagination to invent him?

@diogenes2 –
Just a note: the name is Thingvellir, but in Icelandic the old letters “thorn,” which looks like a small B (b) also with a downward stem, or a P (or p) also with an upward stem, and “edh,” which looks like a curly small D (d) with a crossbar across the stem (like the IPA symbol for voiced “th” in English, which is derived from it), are still in use (they were once used in English but began to be superseded about the time of Chaucer, by “th”). So what you are seeing is really “th,” not “b.”

We the People though must expose the scam to the greater public before the traitors that have usurped the role government sign away our very freedom in pursuit of the Fabian green(Gaian Paganism) Utopia. In the US, you should join and promote protests outside the White House.Spread the plant food(CO2) with your voices and make life “hot” for Obama.

When I fly, my carbon footprint is zilch – 2 weeks ago, I was on a plane to Italy. Now, that plane would fly to Italy back and forth 3 times a day anyway. So really, not flying wouldn’t make a difference 😉
——————————————–
If people stopped flying the airlines would have to cancel the flights. That would in theory result in less anthropogenic CO2 emmissions if you’re into that sort of thing.
Your ire is directed at exactly the wrong people. None of the commentors here are advocating that people not fly. I for one am a big advocate of commercial aviation. However, Mann, Noorgard, et al DO advocate limiting flying among other things at least for the little people.

“‘The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars’ as Part of 2013 Sagan National Colloquium”
This is so ironic: Carl Sagan was the first to see his climate predictions massively fail when in his debate with Fred Singer on Nightline on the eve of the first Gulf War he predicted that if Saddam set the oil wells on fire, there would be something akin to a nuclear winter, because the soot would be “self-lofting” and make it into the stratosphere.
I’ll never forget Sagan’s response to when Singer asserted that the soot would not rise more than a few thousand feet and precipitate out of the atmosphere: “But we have models that show that a nuclear autumn would be the result.” (Singer responded something like: “Our models show otherwise.”)
BTW, Saddam did set Kuwait’s wells on fire, and the smoke did precipitate out just like Fred Singer said. And the TTAPS global winter models faded into obscurity. You’d think that Mann would let his hockey stick take the same route…

I’d like to see him go into a “Mannic” depression after his chicanery is outed beyond all doubt.
