On the cover of the Rolling Stone? Not quite, but I did get a single word in

Jeff Goodell

Rolling Stone’s Jeff Goodell demonstrates what a biased journalist he is.

My first impression was to ignore the request for interview from Rolling Stone’s Jeff Goodell last week, after all, RS has pretty much blown what credibility they had after making a terrorist bomber a front page teen heartthrob.

But, I said to myself, “it’s my duty to reach people I might not ordinarily reach”. So, I responded in good faith. In exchange, I got slimed by Goodell.

Here’s the email exchange I had with him:

My view is that AR5 is going to stillborn, mainly because it is already outdated by new science that won’t be included.

There have been 19 separate peer reviewed papers published in climate sensitivity to CO2 by 42 scientists since January 1, 2012 all describing a lower climate sensitivity.

There have been recent revelations in journals (Yu Kosaka & Shang-Ping Xie Nature 2013  and de Freitas &McLean, 2013 International Journal of Geosciences) that demonstrate ENSO (El Niño) in the Pacific is responsible for the 15 plus years of global warming slowdown known as “the pause”. These two papers strongly suggest natural variability is still the dominant climate control.

Then there is the lack of reality matching what the climate models tell us, such as this leaked graph from an AR5 draft:

Original from AR5 draft: http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/ipcc_ar5_draft_fig1-4_with.png

Annotated version: http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/ipcc-ar5draft-fig-1-4.gif

All this while global CO2 emissions have been growing steadily. The lack of temperature match to models, “the pause”, combined with these new ENSO findings tell us that global warming has gone from a planetary crisis to a minor problem in a Banana Republic where only a few vocal science rebels are arguing for immediate intervention.

The costs of mitigating the perceived problem are also staggering compared to the benefit, as the 50:1 project demonstrates:

=================================================================

And what did I get for my effort? A single word. Here is the paragraph where I appear:

But, of course, this is nothing new. In 2007, when the IPCC released its Fourth Assessment Report, it was also nearly certain that human activity was heating up the planet, with grave consequences for our future well-being. And six years before that, when the IPCC released its Third Assessment, scientists were pretty certain about it too. But phrases like “high confidence” in warming do not, to the unscientific ear, inspire high confidence in the report’s finding, since they imply the existence of doubt, no matter how slight. And in the climate wars, “Doubt is what deniers thrive on and exploit,” says Bob Watson, who was head of the IPCC from 1997 to 2002. The final report has not even been released yet, and already prominent bloggers in the denial-sphere, like Anthony Watts, are calling it “stillborn.

(added) What is most galling, is that Goodell asked me for my opinion prior the release of the IPCC AR5 report, then chastises me in his article for giving it. Whatta guy. (/end add)

Meanwhile, full quotes exist in the article from Naomi Oreskes, Rajendra Pachauri, Bob Watson, Anthony Leiserowitz,  Ben Santer, blogger Joe Romm, and last but not least the anonymous tweeting person(s) behind Organizing for Action, the successor of President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.

Besides giving liberal use of the word “denier” in the most derogatory way possible, the article also mentions “Why the City of Miami is Doomed to Drown“. Where he fantasizes about the year 2030.

Read it all here: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/global-warming-is-very-real-20130912?print=true

I suppose it’s par for the course from people that can’t tell the difference between water vapor from cooling towers and “carbon emissions”.

Rolling_Stone_idiocy

The stupid, it burns!  http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/global-warmings-denier-elite-20130912

My single word with a “denier” label to my name is what I get for talking to “The Delinquent Teenager” crowd as if they were adults I suppose. I suggest that anyone who encounters Jeff Goodell in any future interview request, simply not respond – he’s shamelessly biased, fine with hatefully labeling people he doesn’t agree with, runs in the company of fools that can’t tell pollution from non-pollution, and now proven himself to be not worth the effort.

UPDATE: Shortly after I wrote this article, Goodell took notice on his Twitter feed, and shortly after that, the erroneous caption was replaced along with a different photo of the same power station in Germany, but with no explanation as to the error. Here’s what it looks like now:

Actually, the caption to the photograph of the towers is wrong. Those are not carbon emissions but steam escaping from cooling towers. I could be wrong, but Carbon is usually found in smoke, I thought..

Sadly, that has been my experience over 15 years on food/ag policy and ANYTHING scientific: Biotechnology, animal husbandry, pesticides, etc. I hate to say it, but I think the media game as it is currently set up is a losers game. Yes the Rolling Stone Magazine, a paragon of scientific prominence. I have never touched, let alone looked at, the pages of Rolling Stone. I didn’t say “read” since I wasn’t sure that they had anything in their pages to read until you printed the above excerpt.
Anyway, the rolling stone, al gore…etc…the thief and liar Peter Gleick, Mann, Jones….they are the voices of Global Warming. I say let them talk but don’t give the rolling Stone any more exposure. It is a failing cartoon rag and I’d like to see it out of print. Don’t link to it.
Don’t mention any of the writers etc. let them fade into oblivion.

Yeah, what you see there is steam. Of course, even though you can’t see it, CO2 is also being emitted. Just as it is emitted when we breathe out. So we are all actually emitted “carbon emissions.” It’s just the attempt to label something, make the tribe hate what you have labelled.

Regardless of what happens with climate change, sooner or later Miami will be wiped off the map by an extremely powerful hurricane, as will New Orleans. It is just a matter of time, whether it be five years, fifty years, or five-hundred years.
Whenever it happens, the other thing we can be sure of is that the federal government will step forward to cover the cost of the losses, thus discouraging current residents from considering a move to higher ground; and if the worst happens, encouraging the rebuilding of the city pretty much in the same place it is now.

Might I rewrite a portion of this paragraph from Jeff Goodell:
‘But, of course, this is nothing new. In 2007, when the IPCC released its Fourth Assessment Report, it was also nearly certain that human activity was heating up the planet…’
But, of course, sliming Anthony Watts is nothing new in our behavior. In 2009 or 10 we also slimed General McCrystal with a totally fabricated report where we claimed he slimed President Obama. A Rolling Stone gathers lots of slime. Not moss.

http://www.npr.org/2010/11/24/131564499/the-new-republic-making-progress-in-mexico
But at least NPR got the description correct…
Steam rises from cooling towers at the Jaenschwalde coal-fired power plant in Germany, a large producer of CO2 gas.”
Along with producing the harmless CO2 gas, the plant produces 22 billion kW-hr per year of energy for Germany.

If or when the light bulb comes on with folks like Mr. Goodell, and they’re intellectually honest, they can refer to what you wrote and perhaps think twice about the next contention with “consensus”. From the article …
Rajendra Pachauri, the head of the IPCC, recently told a group of climate scientists that if we want to avoid this fate, governments must act now to cut carbon pollution: “We have five minutes before midnight.”
From Wikipedia …
The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clock face, maintained since 1947 by the board of directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists at the University of Chicago. The closer the clock is to midnight, the closer the world is estimated to be to global disaster.
The last update to the Doomsday Clock was in 2012. The cause was, “Lack of global political action to address nuclear weapons stockpiles, the potential for regional nuclear conflict, nuclear power safety, and global climate change.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_Clock
There’s more to worry about than climate just change.

What a waste of PC02 footprint this trash is coming out of the Rolling Stoned (no typo) people!
I propose, once again, the development of a Union of Concerned Scientists and Citizens against Fraudulent Science.
Look folks, there are many many people who get paid to post supportive information on most sites that have anything to do with climate change. They are a well organized machine which has reach far and wide in media and government and the paid scientific community. Just look how long it took Hansen (I believe) to get a peer reviewed paper, as a response to another that undermined his prior paper, through the process.

Just to show that those years of chemical engineering studies were not completely wasted, I have to pick nits with Frank K’s comment “Yes that is steam – you know the vapor phase of H2O.” The technical reality is that steam is water vapor, a gas, and is invisible. The visible form, nicknamed commonly but incorrectly as “steam”, is actually condensed water vapor and is made up of water droplets, not vapor.

Anthony, I am not sure that cooling towers are not contributing to global warming if the makeup water to the towers is from no or slow to recharge aquifers. This is especially true for recirculating mechanical draft evaporative cooling towers where the effluent is water vapor and aerosols. The heat removed from the process streams is transferred to the atmosphere in the form of latent heat in the effluent from the cooling tower.
Since the water from no or slow to recharge aquifers is not in equilibrium with the atmosphere the heat is added for one cycle. Since the industries using cooling towers operate 24/7, the heat is therefore added to the atmosphere continuously. The amount of produced ground water from no or slow to recharge aquifers amounts to about 1000 cubic km3 per year including cooling towers and irrigation for food and fodder.
It most certainly is not carbon dioxide emitting from mechanical draft cooling towers but I do believe that it does add heat to the atmosphere.

None of us really have to convince the alarmists anymore. We can ignore them. The current weather records are already proving them wrong and will continue to do so for decades to come. Those alarmists who remain unconvinced as things cool down will be ignored and marginalized within the very near future. Magazines like the Rolling Stone will simply move on to other “causes” as they slowly discover that no one is interested any longer in the “grave consequences” of global warming.
Additionally, all the IPCC can do now if they stick to the same meme is to embarrass and discredit themselves. It all will happen soon enough. We can have complete confidence in it.

How about wet steam and dry steam? And superheated steam. All those are generally treated as forms of pure water. Wet steam has water droplets. Dry steam is either saturated, where any cooling will produce droplets, or supersaturated, where substantial cooling has to occur before droplets appear.
Mixed with air, I suppose the same terminology works, but after the battle years ago over CO2 frost and phase diagrams, I’m reluctant to expound on that. Power plant turbines generally don’t want air in their superheated steam, cooling towers are designed to use air to remove waste heat.

We wonder how others could be so oblivious to 15 years of convincing, authentic data that includes temperatures not warming, global climate models all too warm, vegetative health and crop yields/food production exploding upwards, Antarctic ice not melting, oceans barely rising, violent tornadoes decreasing, hurricanes less frequent, polar bears flourishing………just to name a few.
There are many reasons. One of which is that global science religion is being in indoctrinated into our young people from the earliest age. My 2nd grade grand daughter’s science book last year, taught the children about CO2 pollution, global warming and man made climate change. They are being brainwashed from that young age, all the way to higher education, where most environmental science classes in college finalize the brainwash.
Brainwash victims process all new information based on the assumptions that they think were obtained from being educated about man made climate change and CO2.
Items that confirm this assumption are stored as knowledge in their brains. Things that contradict this assumption are discarded as garbage. The reality is that even when the evidence is lopsided to the side that contradicts, they will choose to believe what their brainwash tells them is the truth.
We think that the truth busting out from every aspect of climate science has got to overcome this. I’m very hopeful but this thing is like a religion.
How many people believe in God and will always believe in God without the concrete scientific evidence to prove it? This is why it’s based on and called “faith”. In religion, faith is everything.
Once people develop “faith” in something, it’s incredibly much more difficult to talk them out of it then it was for them to initially accept it.
To millions of people, climate science is based on faith.
It’s especially frustrating when we try to talk authentic science with someone that believes in this faith. Even worse when that someone has the ability to influence many others by sharing their faith in man made climate change.
Eventually, the worlds climate “snake oil” salesman will be forced to retreat after being bombarded with too much irrefutable, real world data that they run out of ways to twist and spin it to support concepts that have been debunked for some time now.
It seems like we should be on the verge of that right now. However, would we expect President Obama to come out before his 2nd term is up and announce that the latest data suggests we should not act so hastily?
Instead, he will continue on the same path and those that already agree with him, will have the minds that readily accept his words and discard those that contradict it.
Anthony, all we can do is act with integrity and do our best to treat others with respect, while being honest with them. How they respond is on them.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.
…as it has been before.
As long as there is greed for Money, Power, and Fame and there are the mediocre suck-ups who ride on the coattails of the power grabbers you are always going to have fiascoes like this.
Or best hope is that Anthony is part of a long line of humans with honesty and integrity and passion who will counter these parasites and that they have the means to do so.

….In Russia during the Soviet era, “forbidden” works of literature and political criticism were produced and circulated through a system known as “samizdat.” Those who received a manuscript would do so with the implied promise that they would type out five carbon copies before passing it on. And why not use a copier or mimeograph machine? Simply because private ownership of these devices was illegal….
Today, in what we like to call “the Free World,” computers, printers and copiers are abundant. Instead of furtive painstaking hours at the typewriter, “underground” texts can be duplicated in disks and CDs a few seconds. Accordingly, Soviet-style control of ideas and information by the authorities is no longer possible. Most significantly, perhaps, the computer has given us, via the internet, an “American Samizdat.”
Of course, as anyone familiar with the internet is aware, ninety-plus percent of the pages therein offer pure, certifiable junk — porn sites, right-wing rants, commercial promotions, etc. Furthermore, much internet material is self-published, without editorial or publishers’ constraints. Still, to those who have searched and found a few choice web sites, the internet offers much of what remains of free, unconstrained, political and social commentary…..

Anthony’s WUWT is one of those “few choice web sites” of the “American Samizdat” and I am sure that makes people like Rolling Stone’s Jeff Goodell squirm.

….My friends in Russia report that during the Soviet era, most Russians came to regard Pravda as an acceptable solution to the chronic toilet paper shortage, but of little additional value. So they eagerly awaited receipt of each new Samizdat and secretly tuned into the Voice of America and the BBC. In short, the Russians developed very sensitive BS detectors. Alas, the time has come for the American public to do the same.

Let the media know that you are fully aware of their “mushroom tactics” (i.e., “keep ’em in the dark and feed them BS”). The news media put great value in their reputation and credibility. Tell them that they have squandered both with their rightward “spin” and their lies — and specify those lies…. Let them know that you are looking elsewhere for your information and, as in days of the Soviet “samizdat,” you are passing on important information you learn elsewhere to your friends and colleagues.

Rolling Stones Magazine said the following about Led Zeppelin’s first three albums…
“their music is as ephemeral as Marvel comix, and as vivid as an old Technicolor cartoon. It doesn’t challenge anybody’s intelligence or sensibilities, relying instead on a pat visceral impact that will insure absolute stardom for many moons to come. Their albums refine the crude public tools of all dull white blues bands into something awesome in its very insensitive grossness, like a Cecil B. DeMille epic.”
“…alternates between prissy Robert Plant’s howled vocals fronting an acoustic guitar and driving choruses of the band running down a four-chord progression while John Bonham smashes his cymbals on every beat.” (John Mendelsohn, 3/15/69 Review)
“Jimmy Page, around whom the Zeppelin revolves, is, admittedly, an extraordinarily proficient blues guitarist and explorer of his instrument’s electronic capabilities. Unfortunately, he is also a very limited producer and a writer of weak, unimaginative songs.”
“Plant’s strained and unconvincing shouting (he may be as foppish as Rod Stewart, but he’s nowhere near so exciting, especially in the higher registers).”
“It would seem that, if they’re to help fill the void created by the demise of Cream, they will have to find a producer (and editor) and some material worthy of their collective attention.”
“A masterpiece of sarcasm.”
In later years they would try to air brush over their original assessments.Too late. The world’s biggest rock magazine proved they knew dick all about rock and roll. I presume their knowledge of climate issues is equally impressive.

What is hilarious is this:
“And in the climate wars, “Doubt is what deniers thrive on and exploit,” says Bob Watson, who was head of the IPCC from 1997 to 2002.”
Isn’t Jeff Goodell going to clue in all those Occupy Wall Street types that read Rolling Stone that when Watson was IPCC chair he WORKED for the WORLD BANK? Especially after all the articles Rolling Stone has published by Matt Taibbi?
Everything Is Rigged: The Biggest Price-Fixing Scandal Ever: The Illuminati were amateurs. The second huge financial scandal of the year reveals the real international conspiracy: There’s no price the big banks can’t fix
Gangster Bankers: Too Big to Jail: How HSBC hooked up with drug traffickers and terrorists. And got away with it
Perhaps Matt Taibbi can write a new article “Gangster Bankers: Too Big to Jail: How The World Bank hooked up with the IPCC to scam taxpayers. And got away with it”
Perhaps we should suggest it to him although I am sure some one at Rolling Stone has just read it.

Goodell changed his text on the image. The image shows water vapour. I’m sure Goodell knows that water vapour is the main greenhouse gas. Oh the irony.

IPCC
Box 8.1: Upper-Tropospheric Humidity and Water Vapour Feedback
Water vapour is the most important greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Tropospheric water vapour concentration diminishes rapidly with height, since it is ultimately limited by saturation-specific humidity, which strongly decreases as temperature decreases. Nevertheless, these relatively low upper-tropospheric concentrations contribute disproportionately to the ‘natural’ greenhouse effect, both because temperature contrast with the surface increases with height, and because lower down the atmosphere is nearly opaque at wavelengths of strong water vapour absorption.

Ha, ha, ha, I don’t believe it
Da, da, ah, ooh, don’t touch me
Hey, Ray!
Hey, Sugar!
Tell them who we are …
Well, we’re big rock singers
We’ve got golden fingers
And we’re loved everywhere we go (that sounds like us)
We sing about beauty and we sing about truth
For ten-thousand dollars a show (right)
We take all kinds of pills that give us all kind of thrills
But the thrill we’ve never known
Is the thrill that’ll get ya when you get your picture

Goodell is a “young green rebel” well past middle age.
The best punishment for such unreasonable behaviour would be to reveal his actual age at his Wikipedia article, where it is curiously overlooked.

September 12, 2013 5:29 pm

‘Persecution of non-believers has been popular for centuries. Belief and denial are the words of zealots, not scientists.’
Though not a scientist, at least author Jeff Goodell can now tell the difference between water vapor from cooling towers & “carbon emissions” (after this sites ‘eSteamed’ author prompted Rolling Stone to change their misleading caption on the lead picture!)
Goes to the point that many are unable to distinguish between science and non-science, leaving them vulnerable to the emotional appeal of human caused global warming…warming that stopped some 15-17 years ago…

Well stated, Anthony:
” …Then there is the lack of reality matching what the climate models tell us, such as this leaked graph from an AR5 draft:
“Original from AR5 draft: http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/ipcc_ar5_draft_fig1-4_with.png
“Annotated version: http://wattsupwiththat.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/ipcc-ar5draft-fig-1-4.gif
“All this while global CO2 emissions have been growing steadily. The lack of temperature match to models, “the pause”, combined with these new ENSO findings tell us that global warming has gone from a planetary crisis to a minor problem in a Banana Republic where only a few vocal science rebels are arguing for immediate intervention. …”
THANKS, Anthony, for including my annotated version of leaked AR5 fig 1-4. Clearly, the Rolling Stone writer did not click on that link, else he would have instantly converted to our reasonable skeptic side. (Yeah right :^)
Although Rolling Stone reduced your reasoned reply to their invitation to comment on the soon to be released IPCC AR5 to the single word “stillborn” and then mischaracterized you (and by extension all of us at WUWT) as “bloggers in the “denial-sphere”, that does not take away from the basic truth of your (our) views.
Officially reported global temperatures have leveled off for over a decade and a half even as CO2 continues its rapid rise. That is absolute proof that CO2 cannot be the MAJOR (over 50%) cause of the warming.
ALL of the IPCC predictions, from the first to the fourth Assessment Reports, have over-estimated the temperature rise, according to the latest official temperature measurements (as shown by my animated annotations to the leaked AR5 fig 1-4). That is absolute proof that the IPCC climate models have been WRONG (FAR), WRONG (SAR), WRONG (TAR), and WRONG (AR4).
Error, and purposeful mischaracterization of the WUWT message by the left wing media, may slow general acceptance of the fact that we humans and our activities are responsible for only a fraction of the warming over the past century, that that warming has been over-estimated by the official climate “team” cooking the books on the thermometer record, and that the majority of the actual warming is due to natural cycles not under human control — BUT THE TRUTH IS THE TRUTH AND WILL EVENTUALLY PREVAIL.

“You can’t fix non-objective people. They just are the way they are and there is nothing you can do about it.”
I always wondered what’s wrong with non-objective people. You see the type even in childhood, jealously guarding their “truths”. Even their things. They are typically non-sharing types. What drives these people? Fear? Greed? Habit?
I tend to think it is pure personal advantage. Some people will always manouvre themselves into a position to maximize personal gain. Truth, honour, science, be damned. Often you see the same type of people sucking up to whoever has power at any time.
I think it is a genetic trait, as it doesn’t seem to change as the individual grows up and matures.

“Turbine retrofit in the Jänschwalde lignite fired power plant in Germany”
http://www.powerengineeringint.com/articles/print/volume-19/issue-3/features/turbine-retrofit-in-the-jaenschwalde-lignite-fired-power-plant-in-germany.html
Increasing coal plants’ efficiency has been a focus for many years now and turbine retrofits currently being executed by Alstom will make an important contribution to raising performance. By overhauling low-pressure, intermediate-pressure and high-pressure turbines, the specific fuel requirements – and therefore the CO2 emissions – of the 30-years old Jänschwalde lignite plant in Germany, have been reduced significantly.

Their key focus was environmental protection. Within the scope of the comprehensive revision, the boilers in Block A were converted for low nitrous oxide combustion and the electrofilters were modernized. The same measures were subsequently performed on the other blocks. Half a decade later, decommissioning of the three old chimney stacks and commissioning of flue gas desulphurization for all blocks marked a milestone in the history of the power plant. Its emissions were now below the legal thresholds.

September 12, 2013 7:49 pm

Anthony Watts says:

The net product of cooling towers is water vapor, not “carbon emissions”.

That’s a by-product. The material product of a cooling tower is cold water. Thermodynamically, it’s a cold sink that makes the operation of the power station more efficient.
Jänschwalde power station is adjacent to the border with Poland and was constructed between 1976 and 1988; under the glorious régime of the Socialists who didn’t care about pumping sulphur, mercury, other heavy metals, particulates, complex hydrocarbons etc into the atmosphere. Brown skies were the mark of a thriving socialist economy. As was the unmistakable aroma imbued upon everything produced and everybody living in such lucky places.
The power station produces another important by-product; gypsum. It’s made using the sulphur now scrubbed from the flue. Precipitators, etc minimise other emissions but the underlying combustion technology is not amenable to further cleanups. Swedish owner Vattenfall is unlikely to upgrade the plant before the nearby coal is exhausted.
Although one can’t see the CO2 emissions from the cooling towers, flue gases are now vented through the cooling towers; the older stacks having been removed during the noughties.
A few years ago, it was planned to burn something quite different from brown coal at the plant: €1.5 billion in subsidies to trial CCS.

Jeff Goodell just wrote a book on geoengineering the climate. I haven’t read the book but the first couple of paragraphs seem to start in the direction of an interesting and not wholly unreasonable perspective.
Mr. Goodell of all people should appreciate that geoengineering can’t work until the models work. But it’s become obvious to any honest reporter that the models are unsatisfactory. He should be one of the first to insist that the models will need to be seriously worked on before we can seriously start discussing geoengineering a climate. Imagine the repercussions of getting the engineering wrong and precipitating a crop failure. Maybe Anthony should invite Goodell to write something provocative for the WUWT blog on geoengineering. Presumably, centuries hence, another ice age could materialize. If so, it may be humankind’s destiny to engineer the climate.

Can you exlain to me how the article by Jeff Goodell ( http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/global-warming-is-very-real-20130912?print=true ) accurately represents the views of Anthony Watts of the climate blog Watts Up With That?
Encapsulating Mr Watts response to a single word (“stillborn”) is not worthy. Surely a misrepresentation? ( http://wattsupwiththat.com/2013/09/12/on-the-cover-of-the-rolling-stone-not-quite-but-i-did-get-a-single-word-in/#more-93721 )

I think the lesson, Anthony, is that journalists for these kinds of publications (NYT, Rolling Stone, anything on the hard left) are only going to look for ways to quote you out of context. You can still talk to them, but you’ll have to use kid gloves. It’s clear this reporter never had any intent of treating you fairly.
Rolling Stone is a wretched excused for a publication. I canceled my subscription awhile back in large part due to their flagrant climate alarmism.

Anthony,
Look on the bright side. When the report is, indeed, “stillborn,” you’ll be proven concisely correct. No one reading RS was going to read all the other stuff anyway, but they’ll remember “stillborn” and might even start to wonder…

Jeff Goodell recommending geoengineering solutions based on faulty climate models is literally a “bridge to nowhere”. And a horrendously expensive one at that!

Don’t regret doing the right thing, Anthony. You made an effort to tell the truth. You can’t control what the media outlets do with it. That most media isn’t interested in the facts, only their narrative, is just the way thing currently are. A sad state of affairs, to be sure, but that should never discourage you from speaking to them. Eventually the truth wins out.

The first photo was probably deemed unacceptable because it shows all that “carbon pollution” disappearing within the picture frame. Can’t have low-information activists confused now, can we? They just might start thinking.

Having reread the article, it truly is wretched. Biases, inaccuracies, and cherry picking abound.
The big story these days is that climatologists are reassessing and scaling back their projections of run-away global warming. Sensitivity to CO2 forcing appears to have been over estimated. In the coming years, we may well see increasing numbers of climatologists condemn the more extreme and self-serving alarmist predictions.
Rolling Stone Magazine has glossed over this development. Its readers are now ill-prepared to understand the state of climate science, having been convinced that it is settled.

September 13, 2013 8:15 am

That’s not carbon emission from those coal plants. It’s the highly dangerous Dihydrogen Monoxide, which has been shown to be an even more dangerous greenhouse gas. Large concentrations have led to death, property damage in the hundreds of billions of dollars, propagation of illness, and vast environmental damage.
It must be banned immediately.

I don’t know if all the “deniers” are realizing this yet, but folks like Goodell and all the rest of the CAGW crowd are in it to the death. Doubling down, tripling down, forsaking their human morality, these folks will be still telling you they are right up to the minute their policies kill you. They will do anything, say anything, and produce anything that promotes their agenda. So for “deniers” to try and use fact, reason, science, logic, etc. is really basically useless against them. You are essentially up against pathologically driven people. You are still not part of the “process”, you are not included, you are not needed, you are not wanted. Our ONLY HOPE is at the ballot box re: Australia. Goodell is an ass and knows it, proud of it actually. Not worth wasting a breath on this guy. Calling Rolling Stone advertisers IS worth your breath however.

“Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect is as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward—reversing cause and effect. I call these the “wet streets cause rain” stories. Paper’s full of them.
In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.”

I had no idea who Jeff Goodell is so I did some research and found a tired old man with thinning hair telling tired old stories thin on truth and based on debunked leftist talking points that span generations. This represents the entirety of his work. He is unoriginal and seems to attempt to put fire in the belly of his work by covering controversial topics and personalities already beat to death by superior writers in well-regarded publications. What a dull person he’s turned out to be. He could turn his life and career around by writing about the real world instead of the fiction that lives in the fat cells between his ears.

Potter Eaton
September 13, 2013 11:09 am

Goodell tweets: “How unfair! Anthony Watts didn’t get as much space in @rollingstone as an actual scientist.”
Question, Mr. Goodell: Did any “actual scientist” who disagrees with you– say Judith Curry or Richard Lindzen, or Roy Spencer–get any “space” in your fictional piece? I didn’t see any.
It’s instructive to note that your appraisal of the current state of climate science appeared in the Politics section of RS. That, of course, is where it belongs along with all the other political drivel that so frequently characterizes what Rolling Stone charitably calls “journalism.”

Rolling Stone, like other successful publications, doesn’t give its readers material they’re not ready to absorb. They have been at the front edge of financial investigative reporting, with Matt Taibbi’s work. A word in edgewise isn’t necessarily a bad thing. “Stillborn” sums up the IPCC report pretty well.

Anthony,
Kudos for trying yet again to foster honest communication and debate. We always hope for similar participation from our opposition… but the outcome was predictable.
Jeff Goodell controls the message and the outlet like Putin and the KGB control dissent in Russia. Now he is trying to bait further response via Twitter. What a pathetically small, venal personae….

@ Jim:
It seems that you are correct and that the original smokestacks have been removed – so thanks. It was the lack of smokestacks that fooled me.
Now here’s something new that you might find interesting, and indeed if there is anyone commenting on this post who is terrified about increasing CO2 levels due to burning coal, or worse, burning lignite, here’s some good news for you! There is a new product produced by modifying lignite: http://www.gallileomovement.com.au/docs/msp/Solution-to-Pollution.pdf. Further information is available here: http://www.devourx.com.au/
So now we have a sweet irony: the very substance much-demonised by those of the ‘green’ persuasion turns out to be the very ‘magic bullet’ that can remediate real pollution organically. Included in the list of pollutants are radionuclides and PCBs, both hitherto intractable.

On a hunch I downloaded the second gasp generating power plant photo (it is the same plant, different view) and adjusted only the white balance and got nice fluffy white steam clouds vs the foreboding brown belch Mr. Twitter would like everyone to see.
Does he even know that steam (as water vapor) is an even more powerful GHG than his much besmirched carbon? If he were a journalist and interested in accurate reporting he’d have mentioned that.
BTW, I also searched far and wide and can find no evidence that birds and bats are killed at this power plant. It seems to be world-friendly and a good neighbor that provides steady reliable heat and light all through the winter months, no matter the weather. And it doesn’t rely on wind power as a backup. The UK needs more of these to prevent premature deaths to her elderly citizens on fixed incomes and who can’t afford the the luxury of a wind (under)powered economy.

@ richard day re ‘glorified TP”,
Not even that, to slippery and BTW can someone tell Goodell how many trees his rag kills and so adds to the co2 crapopla?? besides all the other chemicals in said paper that prevent it from being nearly impossible to recycle other then using it as a heat source?
Oh about the cooiling towers, besides being labelled “smoke stack” there seems to be an almost genetic connection to this
