Lexicon Shift Alert: global warming gets another name change

Back in 2010, I pointed out that White House science adviser John Holdren had made a shift in naming conventions for the twice renamed “global warming”.

The lexicon shift in 2010

It seems that another shift in the lexicon has occurred, again at the White House. Organizing for Action, President Obama’s campaign machine declared Tuesday that there was a new name.

The Washington Times picked up on this shift, and I’ve updated the graphic to reflect the new name.  There’s also a poll to choose/predict the next name after this one.

The doomed planet movement has been losing momentum. Inconvenient scientific findings have confirmed the lack of any significant warming of dear old Earth over the past 16 years. It’s hard to scare people into action when nothing bad is happening. That’s why the White House has changed its vocabulary again — first “global warming” was changed to “climate change” — and now the correct name of the scam is “carbon pollution.” It’s a way to paint carbon dioxide as if it were black soot billowing out of industrial smokestacks. Carbon dioxide is actually what humans exhale, and it’s food for plants.

Read more: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/aug/13/wearing-out-words/#ixzz2c3XmuaV7

Its seems that since global warming has stalled, and scientists are puzzled by it, plus major players in science are poo-pooing the “climate disruption/extreme weather angle, they had no choice but to make a lexicon shift.

Here is the updated graphic to reflect the lexicon shift. Feel free to share far and wide:

global_warming_name_changes

What should the next name be? Take the poll, you can also add your own answer. Be sure to post your new answer in comments. (I’ll add some of the best ones manually)

[NOTE: for some reason the poll won’t display other answers from voters in the voting or the results, so I disabled it – A]

Ahhhh. The assumption that climate is in a steady state, ergo any bad weather amounts to an anthropogenic ‘disruption’. Because when we see unoccupied planets such as Mars and Jupiter, we see that climate is indeed in a steady state. Oh wait. It isn’t. It dramatically changes from day to day, year to year. I think I just proved these planets are occupied!

The important point that MUST NOT be lost is that the claimed climate symptoms are based on the falsified hypothesis that carbon dioxide retains heat in the atmosphere to such a degree that it increases the rate of the hydrologic cycle and this in turn acts as a runaway positive feedback.
Changing the words for the hypothesis does not alter the fact that it is falsified. It should also not be a game that scientists play. Like consensus, marketing and focus groups to choose effective names for a hypothesis, are NOT the scientific method. Surely, this statement should be repeated “the names are unscientific attempts to hide the falsification of the hypothesis”, and followed with the question – “what has changed in your hypothesis on the effect of increased atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide?” As ALL the actions being taken are to reduce anthropogenic output of carbon dioxide, it is evident that there is no change in the hypothesis – just yet another marketing led political exercise to obfuscate the hypothesis’ failure as indicated by the cessation of warming in the last fifteen years.

I might not have the name that will be used to scare Americans… but I might have the name geologist might use for our epoch… “If the last two natural warm periods were named the “Roman Warm Period” and “Medieval Warm Period”, what will geologist and historians of the future name the current period of warmth? How does “American Warm Period” or “Technological Warm Period” sound, or perhaps in light of the actions of the main stream media and environmentalist the “Hysterical Warm Period” would be a better choice.” I came up with this, in 2010 when writing a paper for university, it seems pretty appropriate when looking at the last 7 years of climate history.

Carbon Pollution has a nice ring to it; Until you stop and consider that we are carbon based lifeforms.
This meme allows doubters, such as myself, to refer to advocates as a “nasty waste of carbon”.

Anthony, you forgot ‘Crazy Weather’ after ‘Climate Disruption’ on your graphic.
Greenhouse growers are to be arrested on mass due to their willful infusions of a highly toxic gas into greenhouses. In the meantime paleo records tell us that carbon dioxide will ravage the tropical forests around the world. We must act now for goodness sake.

Abstract – James L. Crowley
Effects of Rapid Global Warming at the Paleocene-Eocene Boundary on Neotropical Vegetation
Temperatures in tropical regions are estimated to have increased by 3° to 5°C, compared with Late Paleocene values, during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, 56.3 million years ago)………eastern Colombia and western Venezuela. We observed a rapid and distinct increase in plant diversity and origination rates, with a set of new taxa, mostly angiosperms, added to the existing stock of low-diversity Paleocene flora. There is no evidence for enhanced aridity in the northern Neotropics. The tropical rainforest was able to persist under elevated temperatures and high levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide,…….

Global Warming and Neotropical Rainforests: A Historical Perspective
…Our compilation of 5,998 empirical estimates of temperature over the past 120 Ma indicates that tropics have warmed as much as 7°C during both the mid-Cretaceous and the Paleogene….. The TRF did not collapse during past warmings; on the contrary, its diversity increased. The increase in temperature seems to be a major driver in promoting diversity.

It covers all bases, suitably vague it doesn’t even offer to make any predictions. Disruption is a bad thing and to be fought against, it doesn’t have to be defined clearly. August 15, 2013 12:33 pm

Irritable Climate Syndrome sounds good to me too.
Dear Mr. President:
RE: Associating CO2 with carbon pollution
It is my understanding the “carbon pollution” is the new catchword for you will regard to the issue of CO2-induced climate change these days. Well sir, are you assuming that the American people are so ignorant that they do not understand the difference between carbon and CO2 such that CO2 is supposed to be some evil form of carbon pollution? Well Mr. President, allow me this time to inform you that I happen to remember some material from the basic physics courses that I took in high school and college more years back than I care to admit to. I happen to remember that carbon is an atom and one of the basic elements of the Periodic Table. CO2 is a molecule consisting of one atom of carbon and two atoms of oxygen. I remember Mr. President that carbon is the black sooty stuff the combustion process leaves behind, while CO2 is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that is a very necessary component of the Earth’s atmosphere for the existence and sustenance of life on this planet (see, I know some biology too). If your scientific advisors did not inform you of this, well then I strongly recommend you find some new ones. Yes, really I’m available if you are interested. Any six-figure salary will do.
If this is all new to you, there is no need to thank me. If, on the other hand, it is your intention here to pull the scientific wool over everyone’s eyes, well…..I guess we can discuss that when you hire me.
BTW Mr. President, you are aware that that there has been no global warming now for going on 17 years according to the satellites, aren’t you? Maybe that’s something else your “science advisors” didn’t get around to telling you. That’s why I would be more than happy to take the place of one of them. My scientific credentials are very weak at best, but I would probably still be an improvement. Feel free to call any time, Mr. Prez.

How about
A- Anthropogenic ( because it is all humankinds fault)
C- Climate ( the average of exteme weather measurements)
I- Instability ( because the climate changes ( which is an oxymoron as climate is the average of weather). Therefore is is the weather that varies, not climate, as climate is effectively the first differential product )
D- Dilemma ( a problem that needs resolving by govt. intervention (how much we can tax before people get wise?)
Maybe not the best suggestion but I rather like the potnetial headline

4. Climate Jihad

You don’t have what will be the next term on your poll. It is “climate threat”.
This has several advantages:
1. It assumes everyone knows what the climate threat is; if you don’t, then you are a rube (or denier).
2. It doesn’t require anything actually happening; it refers to impending doom.
3. It is very threatening!
4. It doesn’t require precision. What IS the threat, precisely?

The following additional subtypes of Factitious Disorder are proposed:
* Climate Münchausen Syndrome – The patient constructs models that assume unrealistically high sensitivity to greenhouse forcings, panics when model runs show catastrophic warming, and demands costly global treatments that are not actually indicated.
* Carbon Sensitivity Disorder – The patient assumes that every adverse ecological, meteorological, social, or economic event is linked to rising carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. When confronted with the fact that some of these adverse events have decreased with rising CO2, becomes combative.
* Thermageddon by Climate Proxy Syndrome – The patient applies principle component analysis to select from noisy proxies those that conform to a “hockey stick” graph, even if that means inverting the sign of the proxy, in an effort to convince the powerful that current warming is “unprecedented” and expected to be “catastrophic.” Sometimes part of an elaborate hero fantasy about saving the planet, rooted in deep insecurity about the patient’s academic and intellectual mediocrity.
* Goreism – A combination of two or more of the above disorders.

The next scare: Climate Entropy.
Abstract (from 2017)
For millennia Mother Earth has continually gone through changes in its climate, these changes being observable at all time scales from decadal to millennial. These changes are crucial to the biosphere, as they spur on evolutionary developments and prevent any one species monopolising their biowotsit for too long by triggering both extinctions and births of new species.
However, data from the last 20 years show an alarming picture of a stagnant, unchanging world. Scientists are predicting that if this stagnation continues for another 20 years the human population could be doomed, one way or another, possibly by the rise of a mutant virus which is predicted by models to evolve and thrive in an unchanging world. (In our model, bad things can still evolve, good things cannot.) We must act immediately to trigger a climatic change, and prevent Climate Entropy reaching tipping point.

For alarmists something simple is required, so I think ‘Climate’ and ‘The Weather’ should be on the list.
When the BBC or the Guardian are talking about it being hot or stormy they can then correctly reference “due to the weather” or “due to the local climate” instead of blaming any weather event on “climate change” or similar.

August 16, 2013 5:21 am

The warmists are struggling to adjust to cooling climate change. It is not clear that global cooling will be business as usual for the climate wars. The media and the public are going to demand an scientific explanation for the global cooling. The gig is up if there is significant global cooling.
The response to a plateau of no warming for 16 years was climate change. Hot, cold, wet, or storms and so on being attributed to increase in atmospheric CO2. The increase in atmospheric CO2 the warmists imply without any scientific basis causes climate change.
The problem with global cooling is the physical cause is not CO2. Global cooling debunks the extreme AGW hypothesis. If there is no extreme warming caused by the incease in atmospheric CO2 rise why do we hate CO2? Why do we hate carbon dioxide one of the most important atmospheric gases for life on this planet?
As plants eat CO2 and benefit from higher CO2 levels – commercial greenhouses inject CO2 into the greenhouse to increase yield and reduce growing times, cereal crops yield for example increases by 40% for a doubling of CO2 – it is not clear why Western countries should spend trillions of dollars which they do have to fight the ‘war’ on carbon dioxide or carbon. We are carbon based life forms. What is the consequence of carbon ‘pollution’?

July frosts reduce Brazil wheat, coffee output – state
Parana, one of Brazil’s top two wheat-producing states, will lose 33 percent of its current wheat crop that is maturing in the field, bringing current expected output to 1.9 million tonnes, farm secretary’s statistics coordinator Carlos Winckler Godinho told Reuters. Parana is a minor coffee-growing state.
A new cold front that is likely to create frost again over Brazil’s southern wheat crop was settling in over Parana on Wednesday, with temperatures likely to drop near freezing early Thursday morning. That could cause more losses to the crop.
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/july-frosts-reduce-brazil-wheat-120404387.html
ReutersReuters – 23 hours ago
Godinho also said that 62 percent of next year’s coffee crop would be lost due to the frosts that hit the state’s farms in late July. That is roughly equivalent to 1 million 60-kg bags of potential from next year’s crop.
