The WUWT Hot Sheet: Inaugural edition

WUWT_Hot_Sheet_banner

This is an idea I’ve had for awhile, so I’m going to try it and see how it goes with reader interest. The “Hot Sheet” is a collection of snippets, links, and notes that I can’t write full posts about. Basically a “what’s hot” elsewhere. My goal is to do one of these a day during weekdays, each evening, and also to give a shout out to others in the climate community pro and con that have interesting things to say.  Ideas welcome – Anthony

Jo Nova gets press in the Australian:

Carbon credits market is neither free nor worth anything

THE paradox du jour: people who like free markets don’t want a carbon market, and the people who don’t trust capitalism want emissions trading. So why are socialists fighting for a carbon market? Because this “market” is a bureaucrat’s wet dream.

From Gore’s group:

Al Gore to Lead Climate Reality Leadership Corps Training in Chicago

Chicago, IL (July 29, 2013) — Al Gore, Chairman and Founder of The Climate Reality Project, will provide the keynote address on July 31st at the Climate Reality Leadership Corps Training program, taking place in Chicago. Mr. Gore will address 1500 [figure to be confirmed] registered Climate Leaders, representing 50 states and 77 countries, and will provide an updated presentation made popular by the award-winning film, An Inconvenient Truth.

Bishop Hill: A new look at the carbon dioxide budget

As readers are probably aware, I don’t spend a lot of time on new hypotheses about global warming. Apart from intermittent looks at Svensmark’s cosmoclimatology work, I’ve tended to concentrate on mainstream science and its relationship with policy, as well as a lot of “meta” stuff like peer review.

Tom Harris, ICSC: New 5 minute ICSC video – “‘THE EARTH WILL BOIL OVER!’, OBAMA TELLS YOUNG AFRICANS”

My university science student daughter, who attended the Heartland Climate Conference in Chicago and met many of you, just started making YouTube videos using the audios of some of my recent radio interviews – here is her first, “THE EARTH WILL BOIL OVER!”, OBAMA TELLS YOUNG AFRICANS”, using the audio of a call-in I made to a cross-Canada radio show on July 3, 2013:

She is now working on three other ICSC radio interviews from the past week. I’ll send them to you when she completes them. A new generation of climate skeptics is joining the fray!

ICECAP: EPA and the Supreme Court – why the EPA needs to be stopped

By Joseph D’Aleo, Icecap

In the process leading up to the EPA Endangerment Finding approval, I filed numerous comments that went into the record though they did not move the EPA off their position. Then worked with a great team of top leaders, scientists and lawyers on a science based Amicus brief to the DC Circuit Court. The liberal DC Circuit Court found in favor of the EPA but a minority opinion opened the door for a Cert petition to the Supreme Court (SCOTUS_ to review the DC court decision. The DC Circuit Court blocked the submission of the EPA’s own Inspector General’s report to the EPA chiding them for not doing its own scientific evaluation as required by the Information Quality Act.

Our top notch team of lawyers repackaged the arguments in an Amicus Brief to the SCOTUS, one of 9 such briefs. The EPA responded along with the NGOs (Sierra Club, World Wildlife Organization, etc) urging the court to ignore the science arguments we made.  http://icecap.us/images/uploads/EF_SC_Cert_Amicus_153014_1_Final-1.pdf

Junkscience.com: Claim: Burning a liter of gas increases ocean volume by 647 liters

PBS reports:

A new analysis released today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences includes these mind-numbing statistics:

One single liter of petroleum gas burned may add 647 liters of sea volume. One ton of coal burned may add 164,000 gallons of sea volume.

Junkscience.com: Claim: 1,700 U.S. cities below sea level by 2100

The Raw Story reports:

More than 1,700 American cities and towns – including Boston, New York, and Miami – will have significant populations living below the high-water mark by the end of this century, a new climate change study has found.

Those 1,700 towns are locked into a watery future by greenhouse gas emissions already built up in the atmosphere, the analysis published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on Monday found. For nearly 80 of those cities, the watery future would come much sooner, within the next decade.

“Even if we could just stop global emissions tomorrow on a dime, Fort Lauderdale, Miami Gardens, Hoboken, New Jersey will be under sea level,” said Benjamin Strauss, a researcher at Climate Central, and author of the paper. But dramatic cuts in emissions – much greater than Barack Obama and other world leaders have so far agreed – could save nearly 1,000 of those towns, by averting the sea-level rise, the study fund.

Is this like the Hot Sheets from Men In Black?

July 30, 2013 8:42 pm

Brilliant idea, Anthony. Sometimes I can’t get enough, and this will supply a quick way to find more. Thank you so much. 🙂

I like this feature. I don’t always have the time to read through the long blogs. Keep it pithy.
Had a good laugh on the Climate Reality Project report. 1500 people all traveling to Chicago…I assume they’ll all be walking to keep their carbon foot print at a minimum. Yeah, right!

Why not have everybody write short posts on Tips and Posts and have the staff transfer the most interesting ones to the Hot Sheets list on the front.

Nice ! I like this quite a bit. Much more direct than Tips and Notes

July 30, 2013 9:12 pm

Anthony, great idea, thank you. A one stop location for what YOU find interesting in the blog world around us is a treat. I am already looking forward to this. Please dont delagate this to the idea page, I like the idea of this being your daily short hot sheet.

It’s da end, I tells ya!
Hey, I like this format!
My 2 cents: Consider this technique
Extraordinary Weather Warning!
Capital Lashed by Tornado
Make it like pure socialist propaganda.
That way you draw in the idiots. Don’t give the detail away until the very end of the article, and then only very subtly, so folks are struggling with where to put it all. You might ever leave out the date altogether, then the next day print the date on it.

I just finished reading “Carbon credits market is neither free nor worth anything” by Joanne Nova, compliments of WUWT Hot Sheet. Excellent article that I would not have seen if not for this new addition to WUWT.
Can we refer to it as the Watts Report? 😉

OK, I really like the first issue of the Hot Sheet. It puts together topical events into an eminently readable and succinct format. I imagine recent developments have drawn many new viewers to WUWT and I think there is no better way to introduce these new readers to the reasonable tone of this website. Well done indeed Mr. Watts.

Good move. I used to trawl through Tips & Notes regularly looking for links like these, and putting them “up front” will help more people see then. Might be a nice idea if they could then be filed separately from other articles – say, a “Propaganda Pages” section next to the “Reference Pages”.
I love that one Junk Science picked up on – “One ton of coal burned may add 164,000 gallons of sea volume.”. Wow! Given that we burn coal (and oil) by the gigaton, we’re going to need an awful lot of water from somewhere!

Great idea, Anthony! Will continue to put the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) to shame, as I believe Warren Pearce helped you do yesterday. Pls. see “Footnote” in <shameless plug alert>:
Society of Environmental Journalists … lockstep in an appalling beat of bias?

July 31, 2013 2:07 am

Looks like a very good idea to me – sort of a digest so that you can get your teeth into things that interest you and easily skip past those that don’t.

July 31, 2013 2:46 am

I love the idea. As summer vacation comes to a close here in the US and students and teachers have to go back to work you have come up with a service that allows a quick perusal of “the good stuff” that one can read in a few minutes.
I just hope you have the time to keep this up.

Like it… but please don’t leave poor Al Gore out in the cold…….
http://www.climatedepot.com/2013/07/30/gore-effect-in-chicago-coldest-july-weekend-seen-in-the-city-in-decades-greets-early-arrivers-for-this-weeks-al-gore-climate-training-chicago-weather-fall-like-temps-break-30-year-record/
I haven’t run the A/C all week, matter of fact I haven’t had the a.c. running all summer yet here in OKC but an hour or so some afternoons and in late July here that IS quite unusual. Where did all of the very normal 104°F’s and 85 at night go to? Much like nature decide to smear some egg in the faces of the like of Gore that made such a big deal of one single hour last summer at this same time, end of July, when it just touched 111°F but you hear nary of what is happening this “summer”… still waiting for it but actually enjoying cool drizzly days.

The reason people who like free markets don’t want a carbon market is that a carbon market is idiotic.

Great idea! I only hope you have the volunteers (oh, excuse me, the “unreported donations paid employees”) to continue it. I read most of these sites, but not every day (but I do try to pop in here every day).

The amicus curiae brief not only amply proves the falsity of the EPA’s case, but is highly illustrative of the anti-scientific methods of the alarmists – and of their unconcern for the truth, their tyrannical mindset and their fundamental amorality.
McCarthy & Co. must be stopped somehow.

Joanne Nova is really quite. This right here about sums it up, and tells you who the real socialists are at the same time:
“So, who profits from the carbon market? The brokers in a carbon market – like large financial institutions such as Deutsche Bank, UBS, Morgan Stanley, CBA, Citi, HSBC, Macquarie, – make money on every trade. The global carbon market turned over $176bn in 2011.”

Al Gore is becoming more and more like L. Ron Hubbard every day. Before you know it, he’ll have is own boat and will surround himself with young girls in sailor outfits.
Oh, and yeah, this is a nice little aggregation format.
