Yeo Ho Ho! We told you so

From the I smell bacon department and Josh: Tim Yeo’s fall. For those who don’t know, he is an MP and Chairman of the UK Energy and Climate Change Select Committee.

Front page in The Sunday Times today and, of course, much reported here, here, here, here and here on BishopHill.

It is time people threw all three mainstream parties out and started again with Independents, UKIP and other fringe parties.
Can’t be any worse than what we have right now, or not much.

June 9, 2013 12:40 pm

Err… Tim Yeo is a Member of the UK House of Commons, known as Member of Parliament or MP. MEP stands for Member of the European Parliament and to the best of my knowledge, Mr. Yeo is not a Member. If he had of been, in that whited Sepulchre where the bones of democratic process lie bleaching in the sun, his shenanigans would have caused little or no comment.

Hmm… In any ethical era, someone doing this would be sacked. If it were done in a government setting, I would count it as corruption and have him jailed.
But unfortunately, nowadays, ethics is a county to the north-east of London. (Joke for UK readers only…)

Lord Deben (John Selwyn Beefburger) and Tim ‘Trougher’ Yeo having a catfight.
Get your peanuts here. Luvverly peanuts!
Watch the struggle to the death. See two of the UK’s leading green promoters see who can get to rock bottom first. Thrill as they bring their dodgy friends down faster than you can say ‘Timber’ to a windmill assaulted with Semtex. Be amazed that two so slimy could ever have climbed the slippery pole. Chilll with the rest as the UK’s lights go out as fast than their reputations plummet. Turmoil in high places as Climate Change Committee selfdestructs. Cheer for the Good Guys as the sceptic army disarms the greenists in blog-by-blog fighting.

The UK’s Energy Bill passed last Tuesday had a last-minute amendment (which was passed), which rfead as follows: “The Secretary of State must within 12 months of the passing of this Act publish a strategy setting out policies to achieve a reduction in demand for electricity of at least 103 TWh by 2020 and 154 TWh by 2030.”
That’s a 40% reduction in electricity usage. Apparently the Government is assuming that their green power policy will result in the lights going out. It’d be quite funny in a Gilbert & Sullivan opera. But me, I’m a little scared. The real problem is that the other shower are just as bad.

Tim Yeo has been blowing hot and cold. He cares not for co2 or temperature but his own pockets. He is a ‘green’ Conservative MP. Most MPs at Westminster are actually in it just for the money.

This significant amendment has slipped under the radar. To date (apart from Booker) the MSM have been very quiet about this and the implications for the consumer. Has any consumer any idea as to how they will cut their consumption by between 25% to 40% and what life will be like if they are forced to do so (in this regard smart metres are being phased in and they have the potential to ration use). A very frightening development.

Here’s the thing. Tim Yeo, and several other members of parliament (MP) have yet again been caught in a sting; set up by a national newspaper and Television programme. When people come to you and say “hey – here’s a thousand pounds (cash) can you ask a couple of questions for me in the house?…can you advise on the parliamentary sub committe in from whom I shall be apearing..?.” Then after the MP’s expenses saga they would think…”hang on, this bloke could be a journalist trying to stitch me up” If they can’t work that one out, how can they run the country?

This is a massive one. For the books.
I don’t see how any history of the AGW will be written without including the Yeo episode in it.
It would insult the intelligence of the readers here to even begin to suggest what effect this story will have on the willingness of British people to believe in AGW.
And especially to pay for such schemes.

Prisons for the promoters of these scams.

Editor
June 9, 2013 10:52 pm

I think this sums up the lies, cheating and money grabbing nature of the proponents of AGW! How many more will crawl out of the woodwork?
I read Christopher Booker’s column in yesterday’s Telegraph wrt the Act of Parliament that means that our electricity consumption must be reduced by 25-40% as described by John and Richard earlier, apparently this clause was buried under a load of waffle and most of the MP’s didn’t have a clue what they were actually voting for! It will no doubt transpire that this another directive from Brussels.
I would also urge anyone contacted by their electricity providers who want to install the new “Smart Meters” to refuse to have one. These meters are designed to allow the electricity companies to shut off power consumption to appliances that are not “essential” when the wind is not turning the turbine blades. There is no law that says it is illegal for consumers not to have one, British Gas offered me one for my business premises, I declined this offer.
You couldn’t make it up!

Also fascinating is the low profile given to the story by the Guardian.
Normally they would be all over corruption allegations in the House. And the Guardian is no friend of the Tories.
But it barely merits a side story hidden in the Environment section of the website.
I suppose if you repeatedly claim that big oil is corrupting the debate then when the real corruption is exposed on the other side it makes the conspiracy theorists look a bit silly.

Tim Yeo is my own MP, in a very leafy affluent area about 60/90 miles NE of London, consisting of small market towns and – mostly – bijou villages. Urban Essex it is not.
Round here, it’s very traditional and conservative with a small ‘c’ – and there’s lots of money. Everyone knows and has done for years that Yeo is a bad egg (sex scandals and all) but they GO OUT AND VOTE FOR HIM ANYWAY because he’s a Tory. UKIP is making some inroads, but not enough to win the seat: as people joke: “They’d elect a sheep round here if it wore the blue ribbon”
As noted above, the Guido Fawkes parliamentary blog order-order.com (which has excellent sources in Tory circles) has been gunning for Yeo for several years now. He has been lining his pocket on gree energy for many years now.
Yeo epitomises everything which is wrong with both the party system and the lobby system, and how they corrupt democracy.

Steve Jones
June 10, 2013 5:57 am

Sadly, Yeo is not by any means an exception to the rule. In the UK, our good old BBC (which we pay a compulsory TV tax to) are trying to ignore this story because Yeo has his nose in the Green trough which is OK by the BBC. Contrast this with the case of Patrick Mercer who is another MP caught up in a newspaper sting. His crime was to agree to lobby on behalf of Fiji. The difference being, the BBC regard Mercer as right-wing and he is also a former serving soldier.

Wherever ‘ethics’ may be it is clearly a county unknown to Yeo. Though Yeoville is actually in Somerset.
I predict his political career will be toast by the end of the month. Blogger Paul Staines (Guido Fawkes) will lead the charge..but he will not be short of willing helpers. Already newspapers from both sides of politics (the Mail and the Mirror) are calling for his head. He seems to have few friends even within his own party or constituency. And only last week he upset the equally obnoxious Lord Deben (John Selwyn-Beefburger) by questioning his ethical stance and appointment to an important committee.
And of course his financial interests are already badly damaged. No ‘green’ company hoping to have even a fig leaf of respectability to cover their activities would touch this guy with a bargepole. I think his consultancies and directorships will dry up very quickly.
So now the only question is how long he can hang on..as a Dead Man Walking.
He will most emphatically not be missed.
In closing I merely note that the maximum penalty for offences under the Bribery Act is 10 years in chokey. He is 68 already.

June 10, 2013 3:10 pm

Here is my letter of Complaint to the Police
I am writing to you to make an allegation of Misconduct in a Public Office by Mr. Tim Yeo, MP for South Suffolk and Chairman of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee. I further allege that Mr. Yeo has repeatedly abused his position as Chairman of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee and the Public’s trust for personal financial gain.
Over the past 3-4 years, Mr. Yeo has earned in the region of £500,000 from directorships and shareholdings with five ‘green’ companies which are developing renewable energies. Thus he is: • Director of ITI Energy Limited, which converts waste into biofuel;
• AFC Energy, which develops alkaline fuel cell technology;
• Group Eurotunnel, serving on its Environment and Safety Committee;
• Director of Eco City Vehicles (and share option);
• Chairman of TMO Renewables which develops and supplies technology for second generation biofuels;
Of course such business activities would be entirely reasonable but for one thing. Mr. Yeo is chairman of the influential Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee, which is supposed to examine Britain’s approach to renewable energy with a neutral gaze, unencumbered by outside interests. In stark contrast to Mr. Yeo’s clearly related business interests, the House of Commons’ other 22 Select Committee chairmen, on subjects ranging from Health to Defence, have scrupulously avoided any potential conflicts over their business interests.
Particularly egregious examples of Mr. Yeo’s conflicts of interest include:
In 2008 Mr. Yeo used his casting vote as chairman of the all-party Environmental Audit Select Committee to push through a report, which backed the decision by Mr. Alistair Darling, the then Chancellor, that new, higher rates of vehicle excise duty (VED) rates should apply to previously-purchased cars. With the passage of this rule, Mr. Yeo’s company, Eco City Vehicles Plc, stands to benefit as the company plans to market a hybrid car which would qualify for low rates of VED under this new tax regime. This is a serious conflict of interest at best and corrupt, at worst.
In December 2012 Mr Yeo made a speech supporting renewable energy stating that “Lumbering the economy with a centralised power system largely reliant on gas would be like running an office using a fax machine in the age of the iPad. I think the choice facing Britain is clear. We can embrace the technology of the future, set a target to reduce our present heavy dependence on fossil fuels and upgrade our electricity system, or we can cling to the combustion-based technologies of the past, gamble the future on assumptions about the availability of abundant cheap gas and slow down the process of decarbonising our economy.” What few people know is that Mr. Yeo is a shareholder and employee of Group Eurotunnel SA, which has a £500 million contract to run a cable under the sea to bring electricity from French nuclear power stations to Britain. Specifically to make up for power here when there isn’t enough wind to keep our wind turbines turning. This is a classic case of “hedging one’s bets”, where Mr. Yeo and his company stands to profit even when the “green energy” he is so keen to promote fails to deliver.
Recently (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-22769237) Mr. Yeo was exhorting fellow MPs to vote for his amendment calling for even faster ‘decarbonisation’ of our economy. The amendment, which only narrowly failed, would provide substantial financial gains for a swathe of firms involved in renewable energy. In this connection Mr. Yeo is the first ever President of the Renewable Energy Association (http://www.r-e-a.net/news/new-appointments-at-the-uks-largest-renewables-trade-body).
Finally there is the scandal reported in “The Sunday Times” (9/6/2013) where it appears that Mr. Yeo was willing to be a paid advocate for a fictitious green energy company. The reporters approached Mr. Yeo posing as representatives of a solar energy company offering to hire him as a paid advocate to push for new laws to boost its business for a fee of £7,000 a day. He told them he could commit to at least one day a month, despite the fact that he already held four private jobs and was in negotiations to take a further two. Setting out what he could offer, the MP said: “If you want to meet the right people, I can facilitate all those introductions and I can use the knowledge I get from what is quite an active network of connections.” Asked if that extended to government figures, Yeo replied: “Yes.” The House of Commons code of conduct forbids members from acting as paid advocates, including by lobbying ministers. Yeo also said he could help them by guiding them on submitting evidence to his own committee, which he described as “a good way of getting your stuff on the map”. Such activities are in direct contravention of House of Commons rules which forbid MPs acting as paid advocates in Parliament, which includes making any approaches to Ministers, Civil Servants , or other MPs to promote a private agenda for cash.
Below I supply a list of payments Mr. Yeo has received from various companies, all of which stand to benefit from decisions made by Energy and Climate Change Select Committee, of which Mr. Yeo is Chair. The fact that he has registered these payments is meaningless. It is absolutely clear that there is a massive conflict of interest, if not outright corruption here. Is really feasible that Mr. Yeo receives these payments for doing nothing of value for these companies? Would he receive these payments, or be on the boards of these companies, but for his position on the Energy and Climate Change Committee? At the very least there is the appearance of misconduct that is not becoming for someone in Public Office. In short I believe the above constitute clear evidence of Misconduct in a Public Office and possibly outright corruption.
Please note that I am also sending these allegations to Mr. Paxton (Chief Constable) asking for an immediate investigation of these allegations.

Most of my family live in the UK. Forcing a reduction in energy consumption by up to 40% (Most people I know are frugal as it is as energy costs are high in the UK anyway) is a scary prospect that I am sure none of my family are even yet aware of.
Surprises me not one bit that Yeo has/had his fingers in the green funding cookie jar. Even the Royals have their fingers in the money pit too.
