He plans to take a more active role in lawsuits challenging the federal and state governments over their failure to limit emissions, for instance, as well as in fighting the development in Canada of a particularly dirty form of oil extracted from tar sands.

What’s to celebrate? The US Supremes have already proven that judges have little clue about science, even going so far as to tell the EPA that it did have enough evidence to make a ruling.
Those people are fanatics–if even the EPA did not feel it had enough evidence to push the panic button, then it did not.
There is no living creature on Earth that does not derive all its tissues from the biochemical reduction of carbon dioxide. Mr. Hansen and others are indirectly responsible for killing myriads of Arabs through food riots (“Arab Spring”) by promoting corn ethanol as a solution to the warming non-problem.
These people believe firmly in “overpopulation” and the need to reduce the numbers of people on Earth. They also threaten every other living thing, all the way down to bacteria.
Now one of the worst fanatics is relieved of all useful work to spend his full time fighting economic and biologic well-being.

James Hansen did not say CO2 increases would turn the earth into Venus. (See New Times Article that states oceans boiling.) Prior to the anthrogenic emission of CO2, atmospheric CO2 was at its lowest level in 500 million years, 280 ppm. Hansen is predicted 3C warming for a doubling of atmospheric CO2 from 280 ppm to 560 ppm which is alarmist, not correct. The IPCC GCM prediction of 3C warming for a doubling of atmospheric CO2 requires that the planet amplify warming (positive feedback).
As the below graph of paleoclimatic temperature VS atmospheric CO2 levels there has been periods of millions of years when atmospheric CO2 has been high and the planet was colded (ice epoch) and periods when the planet was warm and atmospheric CO2 was low. A lack of correlation of planetary temperature and atmospheric CO2 levels indicates that greenhouse gas warming including CO2 saturates.
An observation that supports that assertion is the CO2 warming theory predicted tropical troposphere hot spot (the hot spot was predicted to occur high in the atmosphere at 10 km) is not observed. The majority of the CO2 warming is predicted to occur in the tropics. The actual warming occurred in the Northern Hemisphere, primarily in the Arctic.

You will not be allowed to bring down our economy. And we don’t have “tar sands”, they are Oilsands, a natural oil spill of biblical proportions that we are CLEANING UP.

i have just watched a video which the presenter claimed that nasa had just cancelled its outreach program (educational, conferences, preaching etc) until at least september which he blamed it on lack of funds. Coincidence ?

And besides his horrific forecast on temp, how come no one is calling him to task over his agency’s lousy solar cycle forecast, which may be a huge problem as far as cooling over the coming decades. There have been too many NASA notaries and illuminaries come out against AGW, there has to be some cultural memory of real science and accomplishment. There is an institution at NASA that everyone wants to be a part of.

This is good news, and bad news; and awful news and really horrible news.
First the good news. Hanson will no longer be a part of NASA. Not that NASA isn’t a shrinking, dying agency, given the realities of budget deficits and lack of long-term vision by the American electorate. But at least he’s out.

What bothers me about Hansen is his joy in leading the rush of lemmings off the cliff.
I hate to take up space with another comment but I’d like to say that I think people should be rather cautious about this. I wish I had the article either directly in front of me or my memory directly in front of me because I have to rely on it. If I recall correctly I read that Obama put through a new executive order (the way he always does it when he can’t get what he wants through the people’s representatives) a couple weeks ago. In the order, I believe signed on a Friday (of course), he called on Federal agencies to consider Climate Change in their approval processes. We all know how green groups have been able to stymie numerous mining, energy, development, etc. projects by invoking the clean air, clean water, wetlands, endangered species and other acts; by tying those projects up with lawsuits in Federal courts. His new executive order now adds Climate Change to that obstacle course. As the article stated, Obama could get off the hook by approving Keystone (which, I believe, is supported by about 70% of the public) and, instead, letting his green allies kill it by tying it up in court due to his new exec. order. It’s not overstating it to say that he’s devious. Despite the hit (about 40%) that middle class net worth has taken since 2007; despite the unemployment rate, which in reality is closer to 10+%; despite the shattered pension funds; lost futures; and inflationary debt loads; Obama’s intention (largely unstated on the campaign trail) was to tackle Climate Change in his second term. Is the timing of this ‘retirement’ by Hansen purely coincidental with the timing of Obama’s new executive order? Is Hansen to lead the charge, as a private sector actor, on these potential upcoming lawsuits? Was that the purpose? I’d say its time to pull out the Saul Alinsky handbook and play the same dirty game on them. It’s time to marginalized Hansen.

Even though Exxon has already cleaned up 12,000 barrels, a mix of oil and water two days after the accident. Exxon responded quickly enough to clean up 4,500 barrel mix by Saturday.

I met Hanson in person in New York in the mid 2000’s at a University of Columbia related Earth Institute Conference, it’s a long story, please don’t ask, but after that encounter I know he will not accept your invitation.
Like so many of his “ilk” my sense was that he only reveals his beliefs when in assured company that will not challenge his “intellect”. He appeared to me to be a moral coward.
If he did accept your invitation he would have to get past me first to get to Canmore to see you, not sure he would be in a good mental state to “converse” with you after the diversion.

Venus has an atmospheric pressure that is 90 times the earth’s. The Venusian atmosphere is around 97% CO2. Under very high pressure a gas becomes like a liquid. The quantum states broaden which explains why Venus is so hot.
Currently atmospheric CO2 is around 394 ppm or 0.0394 % on our planet. If we burned all the fossil fuel on the planet atmospheric CO2 will reach around 1000 ppm or 0.1% with no change in atmospheric CO2. Currently the greenhouse CO2 greenhouse effect is saturated in the lower atmosphere. The IPCC predicted that there would be warming due to the additional CO2 in higher in the atmosphere at roughly 10 km. That has not happened when the planet started to warm there were increased clouds in the tropics which reflects more sunlight off into space. (i.e. The clouds in the tropics regulate the planet’s temperature.)
As plants eat CO2 increased atmospheric CO2 is very beneficial for plants and indirectly for animals.
The optimum level of CO2 for C3 plants (trees, scrubs, cereals, almost all plants except for grasses which have evolved to survive in very, very, low CO2 is 1000 ppm to 1200 ppm. Greenhouse inject CO2 to reduce growing times and increase yield. The increased cereal crop yield for a doubling of atmospheric CO2 from 280 ppm to 560 ppm is around 40%. Highly levels of CO2 will cause the biosphere to expand. Plants eat CO2.
For almost the entire history of this planet atmospheric CO2 has been at or above 1000 ppm. Atmospheric CO2 has been as high as 5000 ppm. (0.5%) The earth did not turn in Venus.
The following graph shows how planetary has changed and atmospheric CO2 has changed with time for the period in which higher forms of life have been on this planet. As you can see temperature and atmospheric CO2 do not correlate.

The greenhouse warming effect on the earth saturates. Additional atmospheric CO2 will not significantly warm the planet. The estimate warming for a doubling of atmospheric CO2 from 280 ppm (0.028%) to 560 ppm (0.056%) which will occur by the end of this century under the so called business as usual is less than 1C with most of the warming occurring at higher latitudes which will cause the biosphere to expand.

Whether Hansen was pushed, encouraged, or chose to go, this rings the bell on AGW. It is the beginning of the end.

It is probably not a good idea to be seen to spend quite so much time on an external activity that in no way supports your salaried job.

Will it make a difference to NASA, that depends on ‘what’ he laves behind , if he any say in it its highly likely that the next person will carry on ‘the good work’ his been doing , when it actual been doing any work . I’m having a hard time understanding exactly what your issue with comprehension is on the comments attributable to Hansen.
Just because you copy and paste some work that claims the Venus-earth theory is not possible it does nothing to alter the facts that Hansen made the comments.
He said it both in a letter and in his book. The quoted words have even been reported on the alarmist biased BBC Just yesterday:

Hansen will no longer be an embarrassment being paid from NASA’s budget but instead his income will come from the government employee retirement system.
He could always sue almost anybody including big oil or big coal just not the federal government and the taxpayers.

The EPA will settle out of court with him and whatever new not-for-organization he starts. It is a well known tactic of the EPA to fund “NGO’s” who then sue the EPA to enforce the goals that EPA wanted to achieve anyway.
A very similar tactic is used here in the EU, where NGO’s get 70% of their money from the EU Commission and then send their shocktroops e.g. to COP15 to demand that the EU “do something”.

There is a story to be told yet on how his theory of climate science won out over Manabe and others in the early 1980s who were predicting a lower increase in temperatures based on the same physics. This backroom fight likely set the stage for how the climate science mafia worked afterward.

If increased CO2 would cause the earth to experience Venus-like conditions, it would have done so already, since pre-historic CO2 has been much, much higher than it is now, and much higher than if all fossil fuels were burned. (~600 ppmv is the figure I’ve seen discussed, which is an order of magnitude lower than pre-historic concentrations.)
So Hansen isn’t an honest scientist–he makes stuff up to support his ideology. Let him continue to make a fool of himself.

Let us not delude ourselves. In all future news articles he will be referred to as “former NASA scientist,” which is just about the same as “NASA scientist” as far a the general public is concerned. There will be no gleam off his halo because of this resignation. And the choice of his successor at GISS will be made by Obama Administration officials, not NASA career people. Hansen’s support for nuclear may be pragmatic but not in the way it appears.
It is obvious to anyone (other than an environmentalist), and has always been, that if emissions are to be cut very significantly, then nuclear is the only realistic option.
Cutting emissions significantly is the only way Hansen’s ravings can never be shown to be true or false, at least until he has a permanent place in the pantheon.

Where Mr. Hansen states: “As a government employee, you can’t testify against the government”. News to me (federal employee for 30 years).
As usual Jim Hansen’s grasp of federal ethics law is a bit strained.
It is true that under 5 C.F.R. § 2635.805, an executive branch employee may not serve as an “expert witness”, for anyone except the United States, in a proceeding before a Federal court or agency in which the United States is a party or has a direct and substantial interest.
However, Section 2635.805 does not prohibit an employee from serving as a “fact witness”.
The distinction between a “fact witness” and an “expert witness” is important. A fact witness is a person with knowledge about what happened in a particular case, who testifies in the case about what happened or what the facts are. Fact witness testimony consists of the recitation of facts and/or events as opposed to an expert witness, whose testimony consists of the presentation of an opinion, a diagnosis, etc.

Moreover, a federal employee’s can be authorized to serve as an “expert witness” by the Designated Agency Ethics Official (DAEO).
In order to authorize a federal employee to serve as an “expert witness” the DAEO must determine that:
• The employee’s service as an expert witness is in the interest of the Government (after consulting with the agency representing the Government or with other agencies, as appropriate, if the United States is not a party); or
• The subject matter of the testimony does not related to the employee’s duties within the meaning of 5 C.F.R. § 2635.807(a)(2)(i).
So nothing prevents Mr. Hansen from being called as a “fact witness: he merely can’t be called as an “expert witness” unless it serves the “interest of the Government”.
In short, it appears Dr. Hansen’s real issue is that, in the absence of a DAEO wavier, his testimony would be limited to the recitation of facts… as opposed to opinion. Facts have never been Dr. Hansen’s strong suit… so I suspect that is Hansen’s real problem.
It also appears that Dr. Hansen’s is afraid that his opinions, if he remained a federal official, would be deemed, by the Government, not to be “in the interest of the Government’… a curious position to take given the EPA endangerment finding.
As a side note 5 C.F.R. § 2635.805 is intended to prevent a federal employee from using public office for the employee’s personal private gain or for the private gain of the party on whose behalf the employee would testify.

So far, all they’ve announced has been the temp:

To me, the most obvious choices would be someone who’s worked with Hansen (and managed to keep a lower profile): either Dr. Reto Ruedy, Dr. Makiko Sato or Dr. Ken Lo. They’re the ones who know where the skeletons are buried, and what “adjustments” had to be made. Anyone new would have to be trained, and might question the status quo.

It looks like a good possibility that responsible NASA leadership may be bringing in new outside blood to replace the nutty acting Hansen. I think NASA has a mind to sweep the Augean Stables at GISS has been created by the Hansen / Schmidt activities.

His published record of speculations regarding Venus need to be examined by someone, or preferably a number of people, and then evaluated against data received. This will without doubt show complete failure. Probably spectacular failure.

This shows that Hansen not only is now but always has been a shameless liar. Not that that excludes his also being a raving loon & blithering idiot. The last thing in which he has ever been interested is trying to discover reality.
But his quest for irreality has made him rich & famous, at public expense.
Out of curiously I looked to see wither, Hansen, as a former NASA employee, could testify in federal court against the United States… as is his stated intention. It looks like he’s in for a bit of a surprise.
Looking at 14 C.F.R. PART 1263—DEMAND FOR INFORMATION OR TESTIMONY SERVED ON AGENCY EMPLOYEES; PROCEDURES Title 14 – Aeronautics and Space
The section states former employees of NASA are held to the same standard as current employees. See:
Ҥ 1263.100 Purpose and scope.
(a) This part sets forth procedures to be followed with respect to the production or disclosure of official information or records and/or the testimony of present or former employees of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration relating to any official information acquired by any employee of NASA as part of the performance of that employee’s official duties or by virtue of that employee’s official status, where a demand for such production, disclosure, or testimony is issued in a federal, state, or other legal proceeding.”

In order for Hansen to testify against the United States as an “expert witness” he would have to the United States permission. Good luck with that!!!
As usual Hansen’s grasp for federal ethics law is more than a bit flawed.

A real auditing firm might be able to reinstate the temperature record – if the raw data has not been deleted by the A-hole and his acolytes. If they could do this, then maybe they could continue the process and, if the record does not pass the independent audit at year end, then bye bye next curator.
This is standard procedure out in the real world.
