Pending WUWT milestone – closing in on 1 million comments

Who will be the lucky winner?

This screenshot from my WordPress control panel shows we are closing in on comment number 1 million.  We’ll reach that is a few days. This is a testament to our volunteer moderation team.

1_million_comments_closing_spam

Whoever gets comment number one million, I’ll send off a small prize to; a WUWT mug labeled as being the millionth commenter.

If you have not commented on WUWT before, you might consider doing so.

I wonder if any other climate blogs have this many comments?

Just for those that might go looking to match up comment numbers, don’t bother, because due to spam comments (that every wordpress blog gets) that are automatically trashed by Akismet, the comment number and the total valid comments don’t match. The 995,650 comments represent valid comments that were not flagged as spam and were approved by one of our moderation team members.

March 11, 2013 1:15 pm

Quite an accomplishment to generate so much intense conversation, Anthony, especially considering that in the first year it was the rare post that generated more than a handful (1-3) comments. Things started taking off when you gradually moved from local Chico issues to the series “How not to measure temperatures – Part nn.” It’s equally impressive that the quality and usefulness of WUWT has continually improved. Most start-ups quickly fail for any of a dozen reasons. Six and a half years in this business is extraordinary. I’m pleased to say I checked in during the early months and haven’t left. So did Mosher and Evan Jones, but old TCO and bigcitylib are no longer around. Couldn’t take the heat, I guess (/sarc). Congratulations!

Congratulations Anthony, to you and your team for the informative, interesting and balanced articles. One of my daily “must read” blogs. As a blogger myself I know how difficult it is to produce a quality post daily and, as in your case, sometimes multiple posts.
Brilliant work. As someone else has already said, yours represents a real consensus – one open to discussion and debate and not afraid to admit errors on occasion.

Still, never mind – congrats in advance to the lucky winner – and even more congrats to Anthony and all the Mods and Posters for all their magnificent efforts! Well done, on achieving a million comments!

March 11, 2013 2:01 pm

i comment here because this blog always provokes thoughtfulness and long ago, although Anthony dislikes the politics of mmgw – that’s just what it is all about – there never was the slightest scientific legitimacy to MMCO2 causing runaway [or any tangible] warming.
And politics is all about scamming and I hate to be defrauded of my hard earned taxes, fuel taxes – hmm reluctantly yeah maybe – energy taxes to pay for useless ferkin palliatives [ie bird choppers] – not flipping likely.
And another thing, I hate politicians who care not a whit about science and empiricism – who then pontificate to all and sundry about GHG this and runaway warming that [as if] – and who quite clearly are ignorant loudmouth know nothings [Al Gore] – if yer gonna preach, then make it believable.

I am waiting for Mosher to point out that the comment tally isn’t really a count of the posts, it’s actually a model and sceptics who comment on the comment tally are embracing a model and therefore are hypocrites for criticising GCMs. And when challenged by Willis about the drive by snark Mosh will double and triple down on the snark with the mantra that adjustments made to the number don’t ever make any difference to the results and nor does the quality of the counter – as broken counters give the exact same results as good ones. After a million posts one gets to know what is coming next.

If Mosher wins the mug, I hope you put the label on upside down so he occasionally trys to fill it that way.
If Michael E. Mann wins the mug, I hope you first drop it and send him a picture (model) you took of it earlier. Then send him the pieces from another mug entirely.
If Willis wins the mug, he must promise to write about the adventure in flowery prose, as we all know he will, so we can all enjoy vicariously.
If Romm were to happen to win the mug, you can undoubtedly keep it, as he’d have no part of it.
And if I win the mug, … No, I won’t win the mug, but I’ll certainly envy the one who does.
Thanks a million, Anthony. And all you mods, too! A million thanks!

What about a posting comparing the state of consensus climatology, before the first and after the millionth comment on WUWT?
What of the consensus wisdom still stands?
What measurements could one use?
I can say my peace of mind, with respect to IPCC scare stories is much better, but my antagonism toward my employees, the government is much aggravated.
Groupthink is the norm at the committee level.
Regarding the damage I perceive this scam to have done my country, I am driven to the conclusion, no government is worth this cost.
The watchdogs, were not asleep, they were ravaging the commons.
My opinion of my government will never be better than it be today.

On Thursday at 3:02 pm pacific time i will send in my winning post — in rhyme.. I already have a couple lines — something Omar Khayyam-ish
That mug of thine
I now call mine
I’d rather were
A jug of wine
Who needs a mug
For one can chug
The deepest draught
Straight from the jug
No mug at all
But wine for all
For wine’s the god
That tells you all
So wisdom’s mine
And words divine
(No mug, I’ll chug)
If you send wine!
There’s a thought in there somewhere.

I too appreciate all your good work Anthony and editors. I read some posts everyday, but never have enough time to read all. I’d like to add to the big oil money in your coffers if I could only figure out how to send you a bit. (sarc)

We need to get a CAGW proponent here fast so we can all have good reason to debate the illogical claims –and learn the fun way. Where is Mosher when you need him?

Just over the next mountain. That’s what Dad would tell us after we asked for the umpteenth time, “Are we there yet?”
I am reminded of small chlidren wanting to believe in the power of asking the question, even when the answer is still, obviously, “No.” “It’s just over the next mountain” did quiet us down the first few times we heard it, but by the 20th time, it jusst wasn’t believeable any more. Somehow, there is a connection to GoreBull warming here, but I just can’t seem to feel it.

It’ll be over 1,000,000 much sooner now with FOIA’s CG3 release. That alone probably cut the time to a million by 50% (like some climate science, I just made up that number).

Anthony or anyone: I am not sure if it’s appropriate for me to ask this on WUWT. I work in nuclear and occasionally I come across some folks who bring up global warming as a way to bolster nuclear. I try to set the record straight, but there are several CAGW alarmists who haven’t a clue. This is on LinkedIn, and the moderator there actually referred people to WUWT… which is cool.
Anyway, it would certainly be fun if people from WUWT chimed in. At this time, I’m the lone wolf there.
If this link is snipped, I will understand:

Great that there is moderation. Otherwise someone would be able to confidently claim the 1000000th post when they wrote it.

Now, are the moderators in on this “race for the cup” thingie?
(See, after all, one “could” then “adjust” the spam baseline proxy-count to account for “anomalies in the server lag time” based on a revised Monte Carlo (or was that a Capri or Impala or Riviera model) year recount of the ….. )

I am reminded of small chlidren wanting to believe in the power of asking the question, even when the answer is still, obviously, “No.”

Can you imagine the Oregon trailer pioneers, facing a six-month slow walk across half the continent, facing dust, dirt, mud, raging rivers and high mountains and endless flatlands, prairie fires and floods, thirst, cholera, typhus, starvation, injury, theft, accidents, and winds, heat, cold, no homes nor shelter except a few scattered trading posts for thousands of miles …..
AND even worse
those whining lingering questions from every kid in the back of the wagon :
“Are we theeeeeeeeeeere yet?”
“He’s touching me.”
“She’s on my side of the seat.”
“He made faces at me.”
“She touched me. AGAIN.”
“He burped. Did not. Did to. Did not! Did to!
“He always get to chose first! It’s MY turn.”
And the ever mysterious. “I’ll tell”
