Keystone pipeline passes environmental review – 'little impact on climate' – ecos outraged

Keystone XL pipeline would have little impact on climate change, State Department analysis says – The Washington Post

The State Department released a draft environmental impact assessment of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline Friday afternoon, suggesting the project would have little impact on climate change.

Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune just released the following reaction in a press release just sent out:

“The Sierra Club is outraged by the State Department’s deeply flawed analysis today and what can only be interpreted as lip service to one of the greatest threats to our children’s future: climate disruption…”

Let’s see: They will extract the oily sand, process the mixture, store/transfer the oil, and return the clean sand to the earth. This is a catastrophe!

That oil is going to get used no matter what.
Won’t there actually be less of an environmental impact if the pipeline is built and the oil is refined and the products primarily used in the US, with our tight emissions standards,
As opposed to shipping the oil off to China where they’ll use it according to their “emissions standards”?

GlynnMhor

Indeed, Alvin, the oil sands operations are cleaning up one of the world’s biggest oil spills. The stuff has been oozing into the Athabaska River for millenia before even the indians immigrated to the area.

If the State Department says it, it must be true. (I”m not being facetious here.) If for no other reason than you know they wouldn’t want to say such a thing. The State Department has always been a domain of liberals, even when Republicans were nominally in control.
This is extraordinary news.
But don’t assume Obama will buy into it. Not after that SotU speech.

This is going to be fun to watch go down. The enviro crusaders, zealots and imbibers are piling it up, building a hill to defend and likely die on. Obama desperately needs to throw these voting allies under his bus now that he no longer needs them because five years of his disasterous economic policies need to be turned around fast, fast, fast if he wants to leave a real legacy instead of a crater where the US economy used to be.
Let the sinning and spinning begin.

I am cautiously optimistic it has this EIS, but interventionists lawsuits even after construction is well advanced can derail it.

Correct me if I am wrong here but the only section of this pipeline that needs to be approved by the US Federal Government is the 1 mm wide section that crosses the 49th. All the States that it goes through have now given the go ahead. So build the pipeline to the border from each side and use duct tape on the crossing…….You are welcome 😉

March 1, 2013 4:18 pm

Can someone please tell me why the Sierra club has a tax free status. Last year I did a little research & found that they have over 750 million dollars in assets. That was for 2009 & I’m sure it’s probably closer to a billion now. Then there’s probably a lot of money also hidden away. I also thought to be tax free you could not be involved in politics? What a joke. Wouldn’t you like to see those book’s audited?

Doug Proctor
March 1, 2013 4:19 pm

“Without access to major U.S. export terminals from Keystone XL and other routes, tar sands production will be substantially slowed.””
So says the National Wildlife fella. “Slowed”, does not mean stopped.
The “line in the sand” is symbolic, not real. North Dakota is railcaring 53% of its 803,000 bopd already, but expects/hopes to have another 200,000 bopd on top of that in two years, and 400,000 more within 7. Even if those numbers are aggressive, within the next few years another 250,000 bopd will probably be producing and needing a market. This oil, not just the Canadian sourced (owned by Exxon-Mobil et al) is being moved one way or another to refineries, whether on the Gulf Coast or in New England. And if in New England, the lack of adequate capacity may mean that a lot is then transshipped down the American coastline to Texas.
Railroads are expensive on an operating basis, but since they exist already, cheap on a new capital project basis. Still, the price differential and the long-term amortization of a pipeline makes economic sense to have the pipeline, period, and so the sooner the better: you don’t want to pay for two system, in effect, if you first pay a railroad premium and discount, and then pay for a pipeline transport fee but no discount.
For some reason 650,000 or more bopd by train through the populated areas of the northern United States, and likely along the New England coastline, does not disturb the eco-green: perhaps they WANT an oil disaster in their own backyard.
Strong, Hansen and others have waxed about the need for a real disaster to motivate the American people. Is this what the WWF and the Sierra Club and McKibben, Suzuki and Gore and all the others really want, an environmental disaster that they can use to decarbonize/deindustrialize all those parts of society that do not serve their personal interests (since they are not giving up their SUVs, their air travel or their fancy houses by the sea)?
I wouldn’t be surprised: their words are out there already. Maybe this is just part of the set-up.

Canada PM Harper’s “China strategy” made the State Dept’s decision moot. One way or the other, the oil from the tar sands was going to be used, so the net impact was zero.

I see that the State Dept made exactly the same observation that I have made for more than a year : oil is a valuable commodity and it’s going to market regardless of whether there’

The logic that gives them their out is this: Even if you kill the pipeline, the oilsands will still be developed. In other words, killing the pipeline will provide no environmental benefit.
Obama’s logic will be that killing the pipeline will not help the environment and will cost American jobs. Approving the pipeline will cost him some political support but there will be a net benefit to him politically. He can say, with a straight face, that he has not betrayed his base.

The pipeline at the border might be required to be buried underground:
“The best-known border vista is a six-meter (20 ft) cleared space around unguarded portions of the Canada – United States border.”

That may not be as easy as you might think. There is already a pipeline from Alberta to the refineries in Sarnia and a pipeline from the refineries and ports in Montreal and the east coast (that refine middle eastern oil) back to Sarnia. Sarnia doesn’t have the capacity to refine all the bitumen that the Alberta pipeline can send so an application has been made to reverse the flow from Sarnia back to the Montreal refineries. The antis have held that up for a couple years now for a pipeline that already exists……wholey within Canada. This is not about the oil sands. This is about something entirerly different. For them it is a crusade.

Why should we suffer for HIS childrens future?
Why should I endure the misery of a frigid winter unable to pay for heating because of a 60% increase in electricity charges to supposedly benefit HIS children?
Why should millions starve because agriculture has switched to growing fuel crops to enhance HIS childrens future?
Those of us without children have no duty to suffer to benefit those who do. Anyone who has had children has already done lifetimes’ more harm (in their accounting) than any of us can ever who have no children.
The answer for those who worry about climate change is very simple: DONT HAVE CHILDREN.
This kind of thing has made me VERY angry this winter. Believe me, I am suffering. And yes, it IS because of a$%^&oles like THAT.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Because they are also working to stop proposed pipeline routes to Canada’s west coast as well and they have Canadian tribal groups also opposing those routes, so they are fairly confident that if they can stop Keystone they can keep the tar sands from going anywhere.
I believe that they are wrong, but that is what they are thinking.

March 1, 2013 6:29 pm

I’m truly shocked. I can only guess why. Did Obama have a knock down drag out fight with Warren Buffet? Or, did Tiger Woods have money invested in the Keystone? Or, is the administration worried that the Benghazigate problem may just display its hidden skeletons one more time and needs the State Department to take a second fall: Hillary’s paid her dues, now it’s John Kerry’s turn. Or. Or. Heck, I don’t know.

Pas de Panic Mes Amis….Just another 10 to 15 years of Satellite and Argo data to acquire and we will really have a data set to talking about and to draw conclusions from. As the planet approaches its new load of 10 billion humans, their pets and their walking food supply….we may in the future wish to geo-engineer the planet with doubled or tripled CO2 emissions in a concerted effort to forestall the next glacial maximum for as long as possible. One km of ice over canada, northern europe and asia will kick the stuffing out of our food production and knock our species back to 1-2 billion or worse.
Food for thought.

March 1, 2013 6:37 pm

So let’s see… the ecos don’t want to clean up an oil spill because it’s natural? Huh? Now if mankind had caused it, it would be “killing the Earth and our future children” and no doubt would have to be cleaned up immediately.
It’s fairly clear, right? They don’t care if it’s cleaned up or not, they just don’t want us USING it.
Dang, it must be painful, juggling all the lies, keeping the spin going and being “holier than thou” all the time. I feel sorry for them.

The term ‘Tar Sands’ started being used in Canada to equate them with the Sydney tar pits in Nova Scotia which are a legacy of industrial pollution to give people a bad impression by association with the oil sands. Those that support the oil sands should use the term oil sands….just sayn’

““Lovey” would be Teresa, I guess. But apparently neither she nor any of the other Heinz Family members have been part of the company nor “owners” of it in any substantial** way for quite some time. She did get $500 million after her husband’s death in a plane crash in 1991. So the bottom line for John Kerry and Teresa from the sale to Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital will be zero.”
This made me look around a little, and I must say I am so not surprised:
Teresa Heinz Kerry is of course using her money to push public education for sustainability…

Perhaps the point here is that least part of the US government has not been hijacked by ecoloons – yet. Some people are still thinking in strategic and economic terms, not in fantasy Thermageddon ones.
In the US, you have fracking which is going to transform the US economy. In Europe, the ecoloons have hijacked common sense about fracking and it has been banned by several countries. However, in Europe the ecoloon movement’s biggest supporter is Russia’s Gazprom – not surprising that they they do not want an energy independent Europe.
As for the Sierra Club and other ecoloon organisations, they regularly need to update their causes. Replacing a tired old cause with a fresh new one is how you keep the funds rolling in to support those big salaries and benefits for the guys at the top.

That *IS* the controversy – when you can profit from blocking (competing) development you might just do it. The Solar Industry in Germany has made fortunes this way – and spent most of their profits for further lobbying in Berlin and Brussels, NOT on product development. They knew where the source of their income was, hint, it’s not the sun.
Just amass a few million followers through McKibben and other bought-and-paid-for muppets, tell them you got a much nicer-to-Gaia technology and the only drawback is it’s WAAAYYY more expensive but we can pay for it with money that we print and off you go.
Oh make sure you get the kids all gung-ho about SUSTAINABILITY so they willingly follow you. see above link about Teresa Heinz Kerry. How nice it all fits together. There is an old tale of a town about 40 km west of me:

Why should we suffer for HIS childrens future?
Why should I endure the misery of a frigid winter unable to pay for heating because of a 60% increase in electricity charges to supposedly benefit HIS children?”
This is a great point and one I’ve thought of in other contexts as I don’t have children. There’s a constant “do it for the children” excuse to everything. This is why we need gun control, you can’t have “bad words” on TV, I shouldn’t drive my SUV to save the planet, I pay tons of real estate taxes to educate them, etc.
I agree with you: why should I suffer now for no need to prevent your children from potentially suffering?
Let’s say we still lived in caves. There is a nice warm pile of bear skins. We are all freezing to death. We want to use the bear skins but we don’t because if we use them up then out children won’t have them to keep warm. But what about the freezing children NOW?

Since we all know oil comes from the ground and is perfectly natural and organic, I’ve dug a pit in my back yard, filled it with sand, and that’s where I dump all my SUV oil changes. In a few years some geologists will find it and since I own the mineral rights on my property, should profit nicely /tic. (tongue in cheek)

Gee, who would have thought the Unions would win in a tug of war with the Greenies. The Golden Rule strikes again.
Unions give mega-bucks to the Party while Greens are just vast pits that money is tossed into with the millionaires and soon to become billionaire Al Gore sweeps it up into their bank accounts. In the end, they (Obama) used the stretch-it-out strategy to get it past the elections.

Enbridge to expand mainline between Hardisty and US border:
http://beaconnews.ca/blog/2013/01/enbridge-to-expand-mainline-between-hardisty-and-us-border/
“Enbridge announced Friday that further expansion of the Canadian mainline system between Hardisty, Alberta and the U.S. border is in the works.
The expansion will add an additional 230,000 barrels per day of capacity at an estimated cost of approximately $0.4 billion and involves increased pumping horsepower, with no line pipe construction.”
I recall (I think) reading a story many months ago that said that since Enbridge already had a border crossing right of way, that they could if they decided to, add extra pipelines on the right of way with minimal US involvement. WIsh I would have kept a copy of that storey

No CO2 emissions exporting the oil by tanker.
The USA will not need to import so much oil, so another reduction in oil tanker emissions.
Due to fewer oil tankers coming to North America, a reduction in the amount of oil that could be spilt in any disaster.

It was the freight train pull for the first 10-15 seconds that was a rush. Total fight time; under 30 seconds.

Alas, I really hate to have to do the old quote, “Tell a lie, often enough and loud enough…eventually most people will believe it is true..” (Actually MIS-attributed to the Nazi source,
see http://thinklings.org/posts/goebbels-quote-does-it-really-mean-that) There are all sorts of heavy crude which are very similar to the tar sands. For people with Phd’s to spout this stuff means their Phd’s should be remove. They are “weak minds”, do not deserve attention. Let’s review several points! DIRTY? What the HECK does that mean? DO they think that the completely CLOSED LOOP processing systems have any more or less emissions with “tar sands” than any other feed? Rubbish, the results are the same…no difference.
At the “Pine Bend Refinery” (website http://www.fhr.com/refining/minnesota.aspx ) the tar sands are made into petroleum products which provide a majority of the state’s gasoline. That gasoline is a pure as ANY gasoline anywhere in the country and burns to CO2 and Water in our modern, fuel iinjected cars.
Meanwhile, something like 5 tankcars of VALUABLE molten sulfur are shipped out of Pine Bend, every day. A process developed by the Father of the “evil” Koch Brothers does that. As to the “dirty”? Would that refer to the distillation “bottoms”, otherwise known as “road tar”, which EVERY refinery makes? And it gets used for what? TO MAKE ROADS! And it is NOT considered a hazard. (From dust you came and unto dust you shall return.)
This concept that there is anything particularily “enviromentally damaging” about the tar sands and the products made from them is a LIE.

Obama now has virtually no leverage with the Keystone XL pipeline.
TransCanada has be moving forward with the bulk of the pipeline without waiting for Obama to get all his “ducks in a row.”
Meanwhile, Canadian PM Harper’s moves with China, setting up a possible alternate market for the oil sands production, has left the State Dept. with a “moot” decision. A “yes” would cause a “carbon” release in the US, while a “no” would cause a “carbon” release in China. The net result of either choice would mean only a change in where it is used.
Even now, if Obama says NO, the pipeline will be used to transport oil production from Montana and Wyoming to Texas.
There is simply no leverage for Obama to exercise.
This latest announcement from the State Department appears to be setting the stage for Obama to quietly give the approval, probably late on an alternate news-heavy Friday afternoon.

Some commenters here that are supportive of the oil sands are using the term tar sands. Tar sands is the term used by those wanting to shut the operations down. There is no ‘Tar’ in the oil sands. The term ‘Tar Sands’ started being used in Canada to equate them with the Sydney tar pits in Nova Scotia which are a legacy of industrial pollution to give people a bad impression by association with the oil sands. Those that support the oil sands should use the term oil sands….just sayn’

Here is Bernie Sanders’ statement:

“No one who is serious about protecting the future of our planet and reversing global warming could support this pipeline project. Tar sands oil is the dirtiest on Earth, and the Environmental Protection Agency has said clearly that tar sands production releases 82 percent more greenhouse gas emissions than conventional oil.
“President Obama spoke eloquently in his Inaugural Address and State of the Union about the need to take action to reverse global warming. It’s now time to turn words into action. The president cannot tell us that he is concerned about global warming and approve the Keystone XL project. I again call on the president to reject this dangerous project and continue moving our nation toward energy efficiency and sustainable energy.
“It is bad enough that some people in Washington deny the overwhelming scientific evidence and claim that global warming is a hoax and a Hollywood conspiracy. In my view, it would be equally absurd to claim concern about global warming while then approving decisions that will literally throw fuel on the fire of this planetary crisis. The president must reject the Keystone XL project.”

(emphasis mine>
Considering that he has a degree in political “science” it isn’t difficult to understand why someone like him is so easily overwhelmed looking only at the scientific distortions presented by those who want their government funded paychecks to keep coming.
His vision of “efficiency and sustainable energy” apparently does not include such images as 440,000 birds being slaughtered every year, (see page 42) (…and killed with impunity,), or Chinese villages being poisoned whole by rare earth magnet production, or food prices skyrocketing because of farmland being usurped for bio-fuel and planting solar panels.
And no Bernie – DIRT itself is the dirtiest stuff on earth and happens to be what covers a lot of it. Apparently your home planet is dirt free so, if you don’t like the stuff … please just go home!

Poor McKitten and friends, they go all hysterical and still can’t even get the Washington Post to support them:
Washington Post editorial board endorses Keystone XL pipeline, says environmentalists are “fighting the wrong battles”
“…The analysis underscores the extent to which activists have trumped up a relatively mundane infrastructure issue into the premier environmental fight of this decade, leading to big marches and acts of civil disobedience to advance a cause that is worthy of neither. The activists ought to pick more important fights. Until they do, the president should ignore their pressure….”
