Some days, you just have to laugh. As WUWT readers know, we’ve had the Josh 2013 Skeptic Calendar done independently in the UK via Bishop Hill, and of course we gauged interest here at WUWT. Josh sent over the artwork via email which I turned into the USA version. (Note: Dr. Mann probably doesn’t realize that Josh is a professional illustrator in the UK who gives his climate caricature services to skeptics free each week, just for fun.) Last week I sent out a few free copies to some folks that I thought could really use some Christmas cheer: Dr. Mike Mann, Dr. Gavin Schmidt, Dr. Peter Gleick, and Dana Nuccitelli.
Never beyond my wildest dreams did I think it would turn into a #Kochmachine conspiracy theory issue. But then again, there’s this strange pervading idea that skeptics are well funded and well organized. Here’s what Dr. Mann Tweeted today:
If four people is “widely distributed” well then I guess we all need to revise our world view.
It gets even funnier. Here is what he posted on Facebook:
The return label says COSTCO Photo Center, not Heartland, not Koch Brothers World Headquarters, and not “Skeptic Lair”. I guess Dr. Mann really is out of touch with the common man, because all he had to do was visit COSTCO photo center to see for himself that ANYONE can create and order calendars, and have them sent to friends or family, just like I did. No Koch Brothers credit card needed.
It is really easy. All you have to do is upload JPEG images (Josh’s artwork emailed to me) and use the calendar creator wizard.

Mike clearly does not understand or appreciate the spirit of Christmas, i.e. the spirit of giving, which is characterized by generosity to loved ones, friends, associates and charity for the poor and downtrodden. He’s a true believer in that other religion–the one that demonizes humankind and asserts that man is changing the climate in ways that create a hell on earth. A modern version of original sin, you might call it.

Love the social criticism Anthony makes when he ruminates on why Prof Mann doesn’t recognise the Costco photo centre production. You are 100% correct, Anthony, in my opinion. The well heeled Professor doesn’t shop where ordinary working people go to shop. These alarmists are the same in Australia. They all live in the best hip inner urban districts, have great, high pay, low stress government jobs and also, somewhat counter-intuitively, have the largest carbon footprints (Like Bongo from U2 or Lady Gaga).

This episode shows yet again how poor Michael Mann’s reasoning processes are. He is just a Desmog blogger with a PhD, an angry activist who wants to change the world to suit his own beliefs. What he is NOT is a careful, rigorous thinker.
He ASSUMES that the calendar must have been sent to some vast number of people for free (already a huge leap without evidence), and then ASSUMES that the evil (sic) Koch bros. must have something to do with it.

I thought the good Dr. Mann’s latest discovery was a temperature record partially based on “missing” tree rings(?)
I sent a spoof April Fool joke to a Nobel Prize winner in the UK a decade ago – it was a skit on Harry Potter and astrology called ‘Baccy Potter and the Nobel Laureate’s (dream about being) Stone(d)’ – it was spoof about a hippy astrologer reading the Nobel’s chart – of course it was done knowing a bit about the person’s life, which of course is scientifically unacceptable as you are supposed to ‘analyse data blind’.
What was hilarious was that people that I was a true believer in astrology. I wrote an astrologer’s interpretation of the state of the world at the exact time the Twin Towers came crashing down too, but that doesn’t mean astrology’s true, it just means that this is what astrology would say presented with a particular planetary constellation.
One thing people need to get a life about is this: just because you read about something, learn about its principles and mores, doesn’t mean you believe it per se. You don’t have to be a Christian to read the bible, a Muslim to read the Koran etc etc.
Thing about astrology is this: the way to test it scientifically is to analyse the charts of various people without telling them and see if their future lives bear any relation to the analysis.
No point in telling them the outcome, because by doing that you favour the possibility that they will either conform to the predictions or rebel against them due to the knowledge of what was said.
I’ve never come across anything more pathetic than scientists calling themselves scientists and then saying that the only people who can analyse one set of data is themselves.
True scientists are happy for anyone to do it, because they are confident that either they will be vindicated or a new truth will emerge.
Looks to me like Michael Mann is indulging in out and out defamation. Perhaps time he suffered a bit of lawfare himself.
There’s obviously no way you could afford to spend $15.84 without funding from Big Oil.
I like the idea of Kenji sending these gifts in the future… and with, of course, a list of his esteemed credentials. And there could be pictures of Kenji in his lab coat, running complex experiments on cutting edge research…. on…. yellow snow, or something. 🙂
Many people who live well at tax-payers’ expense don’t realise that out there in the real world are others whose future is not assured by the tax-payer and who thrive due to their own hard work and risk taking. These people can’t understand that others are prepared to do something at their own expense.

One of the reasons why we’re winning (along with data, analysis and science) is that the sceptics have a collective sense of humour. I fear the warmists are just a tiny bit humour challenged.

Defamation lawsuits are the means for a plaintiff to recover damages for loss of his/her good name and reputation. If the plaintiff’s reputation is anyway trashed then the customary award (at least in the UK, and I suspect in Canada too) is the derisory figure of £1 nominal damages only.

Whatever one thinks of his overall policy positions, each film is a piece of scurrilous propaganda, smearing people and ripping bit and pieces of scenes out of context. The late Christopher Hitchens did a superb fisking of Moore’s “Fahrenheit 911” for example.
No honest person should want either Michael Moore or Michael Mann as an “ally” on any issue.

I have never had a gun, with my eyesight a gun would endanger mainly my own feet. I have no fixed allegiance in US politics. I am not necessarily opposed to CO2 mitigation schemes if practical. I will happily adopt a more pro-AGW stance if the facts point that way. At present they do not; witness the lack of significant global warming for some 16 years.
Has anyone ever considered writing the Koch siblings with a tongue-and-cheek request for funding? Like 13.95 for a Josh Calendar? Then at least Mann could gain back a shred of respectablity by being correct about the Koch Kash tsunami that inundates our stridency.

It certainly does seem as if the guy has a high level of paranoia, but maybe he also feels under pressure/threat and feels he needs to react to every little thing?
Much as I think the guy is a poor climate scientist (as in unscientific), he probably isn’t actually a bad bloke, and in that sense he probably doesn’t deserve personal ridicule. Unfortunately, these kinds of responses from him suggest that he is deeply psychologically affected by such things (perhaps as well as politically motivated?) and has moved into his own alternative reality in the ‘world’ he has created in his own mind?
But more seriously, does he not realise how ridiculous he appears? Everyone makes feck-ups, but most normal folk simply hold their hand up and admit errors. Why can’t Mann just re-tweet that he made a mistake and recover the first smidgen of humility?
I dunno, I just wanted to say that we must not make ad hom material out of this – but it’s difficult and I personally find it hard to ‘feel’ for the guy based on his petty and childlike responses!

Yes “consensus” seems to be the correct collective noun for a group of climate scientists, so in that sense Michael Mann was quite right to say the calendar was widely distributed. Furthermore I am sure that deep down Anthony must be quite disappointed by Mann’s lack of Christmas spirit. I’m sure that he was hoping for a hockey stick in return!

I am a skeptic and no fan of the Mann-kind, but I have been very worried recently that there is getting to be far too much ad hom at WUWT. We have rebuked others for this in the past and it would be best not to lay ourselves open to similar criticism.

Each event seems to refer precisely to a different character from the Mr Men ..

There are companies that are buying ice breaking cargo ships because they intend to use the Northwest Passage to ship goods to Europe from Asia. Asia isn’t missing that.
The US military and coast guard is spending lots of money on watching the northern ports of Russia, since now they can sail where only submarines could go in the past. In addition, the value of these ports to Russian industry will be huge, not to mention the possibility of shipping all of that oil and gas globally.
Oil companies are building rigs for the Arctic Ocean that will not depend on ice islands being created. They even believe the ice is melting. This is part of a huge resources grab going on in the Arctic Ocean. I hope we get a piece of that pie.
The US insurance industry is rapidly exiting the coastal insurance market. These companies deal in making decisions based on risk experience and they are running from the likes of Florida and the east coast. Pretty soon, the only insurance you will get in these areas will be backed by the government.
The views shared by the people who march in lock step with this web site, are all destined to be overtaken by events.
Meanwhile, as you are all trying hard to make the data fit the views expressed here, the rest of the world is moving on to living with, and taking advantage of, these changes. Wake up and get a clue!

There is a difference as the book points out that they were mostly within reach of the shore line and this passage has opened on and off over the years. The reason shipping companies are spending billions on these new ships is because it is open for much longer and over a much wider region that will allow an easy shipping route. It’s very different.
In addition I have been to quite a few of the places noted in the book. So I have first hand experince. Maybe I could suggest you try giong to these areas and forming your own judgement.

DickH: Boy, did I hit a sore spot. Your comments prove my point. You are shouting so loud that you are missing the events that are really happening that will effect us all in many ways.
Ice breakers – because its a business bet that they can extend the shipping season by a few weeks.
Russian ports – Before the USSR that was the only coast line they had and now again, the same is true. These ports were almost exclusively military in nature – remember the cold war?
Insurance – the difference is that they are deserting whole states not just regions that have local problems.
Ice melting – as I am sure you know there are many reasons north and south act differently – more ice in the south does not disprove the facts I have stated above.
Is Costco aware of this incredible testimonial to the professional appearance of their calendars?
I got 2 “free” copies of a calendar featuring a picture of my car that I sent in (free= ‘just pay postage and a small handling fee’), and I guarantee nobody would mistake the quality of that calendar with a mass-produced slick and glossy production… so Costco should be proud.
Some days I feel kinda bad for Mann. But that goes away soon enough. I think we’ve all known people a lot like him during our working lives, and, yeah, it’s hard to feel bad for too long.
For reference, I once sent a lawyer a tube of KY (pretty sure everyone can make the connection). The calendar, in comparison, was a nice gesture.

Your comment is a general one not necessarily addressed to the current post. As such, it is a useful comment. No one seems to have addressed it with respect to this post, so I will.
Subtle or not so subtle differences in context need to be recognized. When Person XYZ makes a statement about climate or any other legitimate subject it is not appropriate to attack their personal appearance, the religion they were born into or accept, members of their family, and all such things. When a person makes a public statement that is stupendously silly, seems clueless about the world, lacks understanding regarding irony, lacks a sense of humor, and a sense of good cheer during these seasonal holidays . . . then it is not an ad hominem argument to point out that the person is behaving in one or more of the ways mentioned.
Arguments of the ad hominem kind focus not on the evidence but on the character of the person advancing it, seeking to discredit positions by discrediting those who hold them. Some comments above might fail in this regard. But that’s is not the fault of the post as done by Mr. Watts.

Regarding the snow-on-ice mechanism, the operative part is that it is snowing more now on both the sea ice and the Antarctic continent than in the recent past. So that mechanism is becoming more important and significant.
Got to this thread late since this morning I had to plow snow for a couple of hours for the Christmas buffet here at our club. Was further detained after filling snow plow with gas(JD 260 diesel of course!). After running ok for 15 minutes it stopped…2 hours later and fuel system drained and refilled in busy parking lot here I am…

This is an archive of reports saved by NOAA. The report you should read starts 2/3rds of the way down the left column. It is a report from a Geology lecturer from the University of Christiana on the great changes his expedition have found in the Arctic in November 1922 Ninety (90) years ago:
“The oceanographic observations have, however, been
even more interesting. Ice conditions were exceptional.
In fact, so little ice has never before been noted. The
expedition all but established a record, sailing as far
north as 8ldeg21min in ice-free water. This is the farthest
north ever reached with modern oceanographic apparatus.
The character of the waters of the great polar basin
has heretofore been practically unknown. Dr. Hoel reports
that he made a section of the Gulf Stream at 81′
north latitude and took soundings to a depth of 3,100
meters. These show the Gulf Stream very warm, and it
could be traced as a surface current till beyond the 81st
parallel. The warmth of the waters makes it probable
that the favorable ice conditions will continue for some time.”
They even quote someone who sounds very much like you only he had more than 54 years experience sailing in the Arctic – and makes almost precisely the same comments as you – except a century earlier…
“In connection with Dr. Hoel’s report, it is of interest
to note the unusually warm summer in Arctic Norway
and the observations of Capt. Martin Ingebrigtsen, who
has sailed the eastern Arctic for 54 years past. He says
that he first noted warmer conditions in 1915, that since
that time it has steadily gotten warmer, and that to-day
the Arctic of that region is not recognizable as the same
region of 1865 to 1917.
You make much of the race for oil – this expedition was no different except they were looking for coal. The report says:
“Dr. Hoel, who has just returned, reports the location
of hitherto unknown coal deposits on the eastern shores
of Advent Bay-deposits of vast extent and superior
quality. This is regarded as of first importance, as so
far most of the coal mined by the Norwegian companies
on those islands has not been of the best quality.”
Plus ca change – the race to reach easy access resources was present even a century ago.
So we have reports from 100 years ago that sound almost precisely the same as your post. Its warmer than ever, there is no ice, there is a search for fossil fuel resources. Indeed, the ocean was completely ice free as far as 81:21N. Yet we know that the ice returned again after that then melted again during the 1940’s then returned again. This is a cycle slightly longer than a man’s lifetime experience. The Vikings sailed to Greenland and created large communities with arable farming for several centuries, and also had communities in North East Canada, It is a natural cycle. Those who have not learned history are unaware that they are watching a repeat. Perhaps you should read some history it can be more reliable than politicians and climate ‘scientists’ as it actually happened.

I am very sure NASA’s cryosphere program will not find out anything that could jeopardize the very successful grant-grabbing enabled by Dr. Hansen, of NASA GISS fame, with his superior temperature extrapolation technique.
Or if they do, they will cover it in caveats as thick as the Antarctic ice shield.
See, that’s how much I trust NASA. You won’t convince me otherwise. Money talks. Same thing happening here in the EU, of course. 200bn of the 2013 EU budget (research and non research combined) are marked as being for “climate-related” activities.

Here is the reason for the present warmth in the arctic. The global warmers refuse to look past their cherished and oft-refuted AGW theory. SST is due to insolation, not the greenhouse effect. Warmer SST is not due to AGW, and this is incontrovertably so.

What strikes me about so many of these “the-science-is-settled!” types such as Dr. Mann, who scoff at what they claim is the gross a-scientific background of those who disagree with their diktat about the climate, are really, shockingly, ignorant of so many of the everyday, pedestrian parts of modern technological life which everyman takes for granted and then masters and uses without a second thought, such as the ease and little expense with which we can now draft, create, copy, transfer and distribute a humorous and professional-looking “climate calendar”. I mean, these guys keep telling us we should listen to them because of how smart they are, right? Uh, not so fast there, Dr. Mann…

Not really. There is only a relatively small clique of AGW promoting scientists. The rest are newspaper reporters, ignorant editorial writers, scientifically illiterate lay persons, self-serving blog promoters, and various other clueless lemmings.
If AGW-alarmist scientists were too numerous, their grant gravy train would have to be shared by too many, and the central clique would have to take a pay cut. They certainly don’t want that.
The OISM Petition proved beyond doubt that the vast majority of professionals in the hard sciences do not buy into the “carbon” scare. Despite numerous attempts, the alarmist crowd has been unable to come anywhere close to the OISM numbers. But not for lack of trying.

He obviously suffers from Small Mann complex which is not at all related to small man complex which purportedly applies to short people. Michael is just small. Small in intellect, small in wit, small in thought. His is a small universe – filled mostly with himself. His peers likely would rather be known as anything but. Should he ever reference one of my papers I fear I shall burn it straight away. Other than that he seems like a novel chap you’d like to have a beer over when he’s gone. Later I shall focus on less kind impressions of the Mann and his climate foibles. Keep you your stick on the ice!

Yes, well put Sardondi, I’ve noticed that too. Why is this? Probably because they’re living in a well-funded bubble and really don’t have any intellectual curiousity. Which being up a related point — why do they so readily accuse others of being funded by commercial interests? Most likely because they simply project their own situation and mentality onto others.

Maybe we need to ask just where did Michael Mann get the funds to get a “alarmist” book published? Considering that it was released by Columbia University Press, I’m sure he had help – maybe even using some of his “climate science” grant money to push this out.
You do have to wonder why he couldn’t (or wouldn’t) use Pennsylvania State University’s press (http://www.psupress.org) to put it out. He does work there, doesn’t he?

The climate modelers are bought and paid for. The next EU budget has about 200 bn EUR earmarked for “climate related activities”.

What Oz is exporting to China is prosperity, funded by a CO2 tax on ‘stralians. The people of OZ are paying the people of China to take Ozzie coal and burn it in China. Then Mother Nature ships the CO2 back to Oz. Within a few years this unfair competition, created by the Ozzie government policies and Chinese currency manipulation will wipe out manufacturing in Oz, reducing Aussie CO2 production.
How can any manufacturer compete when the Chinese can land manufactured goods on your doorstep for less than what it costs to by the raw materials wholesale?

When the US government pays scientists 90 billion dollars to find evidence of AGW, you will get $90 billion dollars worth of studies saying “here is evidence of AGW”. You may recall the Al Gore was Vice President for 8 years while these policies were set in place.
If you paid me $90 billion dollars to prove that red hair makes men tall, I could quite easily find and publish tens of thousands of example of tall red-headed men. Clearly proof that red-hair makes men tall. I expect my peers would be more than happy to review and approve my studies in return for me taking the time to review and approve their studies.
No conspiracy is required. Simply money handed out based on a religious belief Al Gore and others have been promoting for 30 years, using science as a tool to promote the belief, and public funds to game the system by rewarding the faithful.

Apparently Mann examined as many calendars (4) to reach his paranoid conclusions as he did trees to come up with his barmy hockey stick graph.
How can these be obtained in Australia ? Need to send some some well deserving folk like Tim Flannery, David Karoly, et al – our own ‘enlightened’ alarmist community – all living on the knife edge of penury – caused by their devotion to ‘saving the planet’
