Too Funny! I send Michael Mann a free WUWT calendar as a Christmas gift, and he goes full conspiracy theory

Some days, you just have to laugh. As WUWT readers know, we’ve had the Josh 2013 Skeptic Calendar done independently in the UK via Bishop Hill, and of course we gauged interest here at WUWT. Josh sent over the artwork via email which I turned into the USA version. (Note: Dr. Mann probably doesn’t realize that Josh is a professional illustrator in the UK who gives his climate caricature services to skeptics free each week, just for fun.) Last week I sent out a few free copies to some folks that I thought could really use some Christmas cheer: Dr. Mike Mann, Dr. Gavin Schmidt, Dr. Peter Gleick, and Dana Nuccitelli.

Never beyond my wildest dreams did I think it would turn into a #Kochmachine conspiracy theory issue. But then again, there’s this strange pervading idea that skeptics are well funded and well organized.  Here’s what Dr. Mann Tweeted today:

Mann_twitter_capture

If four people is “widely distributed” well then I guess we all need to revise our world view.

It gets even funnier. Here is what he posted on Facebook:

Mann_calendar_capture

Mann_COSTCO_Capture

The return label says COSTCO Photo Center, not Heartland, not Koch Brothers World Headquarters, and not “Skeptic Lair”. I guess Dr. Mann really is out of touch with the common man, because all he had to do was visit COSTCO photo center to see for himself that ANYONE can create and order calendars, and have them sent to friends or family, just like I did. No Koch Brothers credit card needed.

COSTCO_Calendar_page

It is really easy. All you have to do is upload JPEG images (Josh’s artwork emailed to me) and use the calendar creator wizard.

COSTCO_Calendar_album

Here’s what it looks like after completion in the COSTCO photo center website:

COSTCO_calendar_editor

And in answer to the question of:

“Who paid for production and shipping costs for this flashy (apparently widely distributed) Anthony Watts WUWT climate change denial calendar?”

The answer is, me. I used my personal credit card, here’s the screen cap of the order to Dr. Mann. I’ve blurred out his address as a courtesy to him:

COSTCO_Mann_order

See the “did you know” sidebar item that allows you to send orders from COSTCO.

So, I spent a whopping $15.84 to send this, and about the same for the other three. Given the reaction, I’d say my plan to spread a little good humor just didn’t work on the humorless.

Merry Christmas anyway Dr. Mann, and to you too Gavin, Peter, and Dana. (Of course none of this would be an issue if the world had just ended yesterday like it was supposed to, but I’m an optimist).

If you want a calendar, you can get one here. For the USA edition, Josh and I split the meager profit, the Koch Brothers get nothing. If you are in the UK/Europe, you can get one at Bishop Hill’s place. Or at http://www.cartoonsbyjosh.com/

P.S. Oh, I should mention, I gave one to Steve McIntyre too. Here’s (Right to Left) Steve, Mosher, Charles the Moderator, and I at AGU in San Francisco at a private dinner at COCO500 (Steve and I split the check). Note the Josh calendar on the table:

Dinner_at_AGU

UPDATE: 9AM PST 11/23 It seems Dr. Mann’s ploy has backfired. This article is now #1 on WordPress worldwide. See the screencap from the WordPress dashboard:

Looks like you got your $15.84 of pleasure from that particular calendar. I think your next move is to send Mike a bill. Hmm, that might be illegal, at least in his eyes. Perhaps if you add a VIP discount of $15.84 so the total comes to $0.00. I think rubbing virtual salt in a virtual wound can’t be much more than a virtuous offense. Include an order form for more.

Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge…”
I had intended to take Robert Services poem and recast it or more a part of it, into some satirical comment. I know how Dr. Mann loves satire. He must he opens himself up to it so often. I have had too much joy reading Service over the years to do that. seasons greetings to anthony & family, mods, guest writers, commenters.
anthony, send the following to MM – it’s sure to blow another fuse:
23 Dec: Saudi Gazette: Syed Rashid Husain: World on brink of losing battle vs. global warming
And with coal back on the global energy circuit, it is now set to surpass oil as the world’s top fuel within a decade, driven by growth in emerging market. China and others including India are already on the list, as the major consumers. Now energy-starved Pakistan, also seems evaluating seriously to exploit its huge Thar coal reserves to generate power and meet the burgeoning need of a rapidly growing population. The deposits – 6th largest in the world – were discovered in 1991 by Geological Survey of Pakistan (GSP) and the United State Agency for International Development…
And the allure to use coal now is so tempting that even Europe is finding it hard to cut its use despite pollution concerns, the International Energy Agency now says in its recent Medium-Term Coal Market Report. As per the report, global coal demand will rise 2.6 percent annually over the next six years and challenge oil as the top energy source…
***A number of European countries have seen their use of coal for electricity consumption jump at the beginning of this year, including by 65 percent in Spain, 35 percent in Britain and 8 per cent in Germany…
“Thanks to abundant supplies and insatiable demand for power from emerging markets, coal met nearly half of the rise in global energy demand during the first decade of the 21st century,” said Maria van der Hoeven, the Executive Director of the Paris-based International Energy Agency.
Economic growth is expected to push up further coal’s share of the global energy mix, “and if no changes are made to current policies, coal will catch oil within a decade,” she said in a statement.
The latest IEA projections see coal consumption nearly catching oil consumption in four years time, rising to 4.32 billion tons of oil equivalent in 2017 against 4.4 billion tons for oil…

In this particular Nativity scene MM seems to have grabbed the role starring as an Ass.
Still this does make some sort of twisted sense, and, if you think about it, completely in character for MM and the team.
MM gets a calendar, and comments about it by email to some close friends. Hey presto, Gavin Schmidt, Peter Gleick, and Dana Nuccitelli all reply – “We got one too.”
Being a good, nay great, Climatologist, Mann jumps to the only possible conclusion- it is an unmistakeable and sinister trend in the data.

Mike clearly does not understand or appreciate the spirit of Christmas, i.e. the spirit of giving, which is characterized by generosity to loved ones, friends, associates and charity for the poor and downtrodden. He’s a true believer in that other religion–the one that demonizes humankind and asserts that man is changing the climate in ways that create a hell on earth. A modern version of original sin, you might call it.
Merry Christmas, Mike! If you don’t like your calender, donate it to someone less fortunate who can use it.

December 22, 2012 8:35 pm

Tis the season for giving. You give a calendar to the gift that keeps on giving. And now he has a calendar to plan his future giving, day by day. So, you see, he is actually a most cheerful and jovial fellow, brimming with Christmas Spirit, and will go on giving and giving until he gives out.
Now, if he was the paranoid sort, brimming with suspicious malice, he would wonder why you chose to send him a calendar. Then….a light would go off in his genius brain. He’d remember the name of the fellow who worked with Keeling developing the “Keeling Curve” was named….”Callendar.”
Of course, of course! It’s all so simple, once you understand the devious subtleties of Anthony Watts……and his pack of wealthy oil tycoons. But he’s on to you now, fellows. Very soon he will figure out the mysterious code obtained by reading the calendar backwards, or upside down. So next year will find you blinking under the ruthless spotlight of his genius analysis….if he is the paranoid sort. (End Sarc.)
Have a merry Christmas, everyone! Into the darkest days there comes a bright light, called Truth. The tallest, darkest, most mighty shadow must fall away, even from the smallest light of that candle.

This episode shows yet again how poor Michael Mann’s reasoning processes are. He is just a Desmog blogger with a PhD, an angry activist who wants to change the world to suit his own beliefs. What he is NOT is a careful, rigorous thinker.
He ASSUMES that the calendar must have been sent to some vast number of people for free (already a huge leap without evidence), and then ASSUMES that the evil (sic) Koch bros. must have something to do with it.
Everything I see of Michael Mann makes me think that he is merely Michael Moore with a PhD, another hot-headed propagandist with no respect for factual accuracy.
Maybe we need a thread on “The Two Michaels – Separated at Birth?”

I sent a spoof April Fool joke to a Nobel Prize winner in the UK a decade ago – it was a skit on Harry Potter and astrology called ‘Baccy Potter and the Nobel Laureate’s (dream about being) Stone(d)’ – it was spoof about a hippy astrologer reading the Nobel’s chart – of course it was done knowing a bit about the person’s life, which of course is scientifically unacceptable as you are supposed to ‘analyse data blind’.
What was hilarious was that people that I was a true believer in astrology. I wrote an astrologer’s interpretation of the state of the world at the exact time the Twin Towers came crashing down too, but that doesn’t mean astrology’s true, it just means that this is what astrology would say presented with a particular planetary constellation.
One thing people need to get a life about is this: just because you read about something, learn about its principles and mores, doesn’t mean you believe it per se. You don’t have to be a Christian to read the bible, a Muslim to read the Koran etc etc.
Thing about astrology is this: the way to test it scientifically is to analyse the charts of various people without telling them and see if their future lives bear any relation to the analysis.
No point in telling them the outcome, because by doing that you favour the possibility that they will either conform to the predictions or rebel against them due to the knowledge of what was said.
I’ve never come across anything more pathetic than scientists calling themselves scientists and then saying that the only people who can analyse one set of data is themselves.
True scientists are happy for anyone to do it, because they are confident that either they will be vindicated or a new truth will emerge.

Many people who live well at tax-payers’ expense don’t realise that out there in the real world are others whose future is not assured by the tax-payer and who thrive due to their own hard work and risk taking. These people can’t understand that others are prepared to do something at their own expense.

Looks to me like Michael Mann is indulging in out and out defamation. Perhaps time he suffered a bit of lawfare himself.

That’s my thought too. Here’s the background on the Anthony/Heartland deal, which has been posted in one form or another widely enough that warmists ought to know about it. Watts isn’t paid for his blogging. A Heartland document describes a request he made last year for funding for a different project:

“Anthony Watts proposes to create a new Web site devoted to accessing the new temperature data from NOAA’s web site and converting them into easy-to-understand graphs that can be easily found and understood by weathermen and the general interested public. Watts has deep expertise in Web site design generally and is well-known and highly regarded by weathermen and meteorologists everywhere. The new site will be promoted heavily at WattsUpwithThat.com. Heartland has agreed to help Anthony raise $88,000 for the project in 2011. The Anonymous Donor has already pledged $44,000. We’ll seek to raise the balance.”

Watts later reported on the progress of this project. Most of the money, apparently, will go to a contract programmer and for equipment and internet fees:

“Using the funds provided with the help of Heartland’s private donor, I hired a specialist programmer familiar with NOAA systems to trap and convert the NOAA sat feed data to look like any other hourly station (like ASOS hourly stations at airports etc) so that we’d be able to start the visualization and comparison process. This is just one phase of the project before it is ready for public consumption. When finished, there will be a website free and open to the public that will allow tracking and visualization of temperatures from the CRN right alongside that of the regular surface network”

Snort. A perfect Christmas gift.
One of the reasons why we’re winning (along with data, analysis and science) is that the sceptics have a collective sense of humour. I fear the warmists are just a tiny bit humour challenged.
Along with sketchy science, the inability to lighten up and deal with people in good faith is costing them a lot of good will. (Romm’s reaction to Ridley is a great example of this.)

That provoked an interesting definition of “widely distributed” wasn’t it?
It seems poor li’l old Mikey hasn’t got many friends if four (4) of his…

sceptic Anthony Watts, to make it “widely distributed” and, of course, it
just had to be paid for by the Koch Foundation…like, he can’t afford $64

funding.
Gee, that’s just so sad to see such a microscopic (microcephalic?) world view…
What a wonderful poke, Anthony. We’re about to have our own “Perfect

the northern north island of NZ It’s now just a tropical storm (starting to

Defamation lawsuits are the means for a plaintiff to recover damages for loss of his/her good name and reputation. If the plaintiff’s reputation is anyway trashed then the customary award (at least in the UK, and I suspect in Canada too) is the derisory figure of £1 nominal damages only.
It strikes me that the good Dr’s tweets (including his wonderful description of us bloggers as “the rabble” as in an earlier WUWT thread) is leading exactly in that direction …

What a silly remark. Don’t “concern troll” me about Newtown when I was not saying anything about that. I have a problem with all of Michael Moore’s work. Whatever one thinks of his overall policy positions, each film is a piece of scurrilous propaganda, smearing people and ripping bit and pieces of scenes out of context. To Chris Schoneveld Dec 22, 11:50 pm. I did had a major problem with Moore’s more recent claim that bin Laden was long deliberately left at large by the evil US to justify big US spending on the military-industrial complex. They will stop at nothing … Please can the Greens and media stop unloading whackos like Moore on Australia, with the GFC we’ve got enough problems.
I have never had a gun, with my eyesight a gun would endanger mainly my own feet. I have no fixed allegiance in US politics. I am not necessarily opposed to CO2 mitigation schemes if practical. It certainly does seem as if the guy has a high level of paranoia, but maybe he also feels under pressure/threat and feels he needs to react to every little thing?
Much as I think the guy is a poor climate scientist (as in unscientific), he probably isn’t actually a bad bloke, and in that sense he probably doesn’t deserve personal ridicule. Unfortunately, these kinds of responses from him suggest that he is deeply psychologically affected by such things (perhaps as well as politically motivated?) and has moved into his own alternative reality in the ‘world’ he has created in his own mind?
But more seriously, does he not realise how ridiculous he appears? Everyone makes feck-ups, but most normal folk simply hold their hand up and admit errors. Why can’t Mann just re-tweet that he made a mistake and recover the first smidgen of humility?
I dunno, I just wanted to say that we must not make ad hom material out of this – but it’s difficult and I personally find it hard to ‘feel’ for the guy based on his petty and childlike responses!

I have travelled to the arctic circle sseveral times over the past 30 years and I can tell you without a doubt that the north is melting and rapidly. This web site has loads of data proving (look at the ice pages) that the planet is warming yet everyone here seems to ignore the obvious. No matter what you think or say here you will be effected by these changes. So let me spell it out for you.
There are companies that are buying ice breaking cargo ships because they intend to use the Northwest Passage to ship goods to Europe from Asia. This works because what ice that forms there is very thin and not multiyear, as it has been in the past. If you deny the fact that ice is melting you miss a great opportunity to make money. Asia isn’t missing that.
The US military and coast guard is spending lots of money on watching the northern ports of Russia, since now they can sail where only submarines could go in the past. In addition, the value of these ports to Russian industry will be huge, not to mention the possibility of shipping all of that oil and gas globally.
Oil companies are building rigs for the Arctic Ocean that will not depend on ice islands being created. They even believe the ice is melting. This is part of a huge resources grab going on in the Arctic Ocean. I hope we get a piece of that pie.
The US insurance industry is rapidly exiting the coastal insurance market. These companies deal in making decisions based on risk experience and they are running from the likes of Florida and the east coast. Pretty soon, the only insurance you will get in these areas will be backed by the government.
The views shared by the people who march in lock step with this web site, are all destined to be overtaken by events.
Meanwhile, as you are all trying hard to make the data fit the views expressed here, the rest of the world is moving on to living with, and taking advantage of, these changes. Wake up and get a clue!

T Pugh:
1. The planet is warming. That is entirely a good thing
2. Human activity has nothing measurable to do with it. Global warming is natural
3. An ice-free Northwest Passage will save immense amounts of fuel, and transit time
4. Melting Arctic ice is a non-event. It will not add one millimeter to the sea level
5. It is the alarmist cult that is always trying to make the data fit their belief system. When data and their models conflict, they discard the data
It is amazing how flat wrong someone can be, about everything. The climate alarmist crowd cannot ever admit that anything about a warming world could be beneficial. That indicates how out of touch with reality they are.

Well WUWT has the graphs that show it is, and that at the same time Antarctic Sea Ice is expanding. What’s your complaint?
“There are companies that are buying ice breaking cargo ships because they intend to use the Northwest Passage to ship goods to Europe from Asia. ”
Why do they need ice breakers when the ice is disappearing?
“The US military and coast guard is spending lots of money on watching the northern ports of Russia, since now they can sail where only submarines could go in the past. ”
T Pugh, WHY DID THEY BUILD PORTS WHEN THEY COULDN’T USE THEM? Think for a moment. There must be a reason for that.
“The US insurance industry is rapidly exiting the coastal insurance market. These companies deal in making decisions based on risk experience and they are running from the likes of Florida and the east coast. Pretty soon, the only insurance you will get in these areas will be backed by the government.”
That’s not new. You build homes on a sandbank called Long Island, the only insurance you get is federal, and ridiculously cheap. John Stossel explained on Fox News that he had the government pay him three homes over the years this way.

Wanna bet? I’m expecting cooling. My money is in oil, cement, steel. Oil because an inefficient society building windmills will need MORE, not less, cement because it makes great foundations for wind mills, steel because it makes great towers for windmills, all of which we wouldn’t need without the cargo cult science of global warming modelers, who, for all I can tell, have not yet understood the limitations of their models, as they lack the necessary mathematical education for that.
“Meanwhile, as you are all trying hard to make the data fit the views expressed here, the rest of the world is moving on to living with, and taking advantage of, these changes. Wake up and get a clue!”
Thank you very much for your condescension, but I’ve been exploiting the warmist cult rituals for years. Heck I even made money from a ridiculous food-to-fuel operation. I was not always that lucky with gaming the subsidy schemes of warmism but I’m getting better.
Oh BTW; I’m selling CPU’s and GPU’s as well, they make for great climate simulating supercomputers. AMD up 8% on Friday…

Mann’s reasoning was like this: If I get one of these, then surely everybody else will, too. In a man who has risen to fame both as a hockey star and a Nobelist, I find this natural, unaffected modesty most commendable.

Well, I think you’re reducing Moore’s work too much.
We should by your logic also not criticize him as long as anyone is obese, or as long as anyone on the planet practizes the dark art of capitalism.

Thanks for the pointer. I think you miss my point.
There is a difference as the book points out that they were mostly within reach of the shore line and this passage has opened on and off over the years. The reason shipping companies are spending billions on these new ships is because it is open for much longer and over a much wider region that will allow an easy shipping route. It’s very different.
In addition I have been to quite a few of the places noted in the book. So I have first hand experince. Maybe I could suggest you try giong to these areas and forming your own judgement.

Obviousley they are forcing hundreds of their employees to work the weekend before Christmas, visit WUWT and write comments here, just to make it look like WUWT was a popular site. FTT T Pugh;
No one here denies that we’ve had some warming, or that Arctic sea ice extent is down from what it was 30 years ago. It is actually the Warmist cult that make the facts fit their so-far unsubstantiated conjecture that man is causing the rather mild and in no way unprecedented warming. Ice breakers – because its a business bet that they can extend the shipping season by a few weeks.
Russian ports – Before the USSR that was the only coast line they had and now again, the same is true. These ports were almost exclusively military in nature – remember the cold war?
Insurance – the difference is that they are deserting whole states not just regions that have local problems.
Ice melting – as I am sure you know there are many reasons north and south act differently – more ice in the south does not disprove the facts I have stated above.

Is Costco aware of this incredible testimonial to the professional appearance of their calendars?
I got 2 “free” copies of a calendar featuring a picture of my car that I sent in (free= ‘just pay postage and a small handling fee’), and I guarantee nobody would mistake the quality of that calendar with a mass-produced slick and glossy production… so Costco should be proud.
Some days I feel kinda bad for Mann. But that goes away soon enough. I think we’ve all known people a lot like him during our working lives, and, yeah, it’s hard to feel bad for too long.
For reference, I once sent a lawyer a tube of KY (pretty sure everyone can make the connection). The calendar, in comparison, was a nice gesture.

Actually, the planet is not warming. In fact, the planet has cooled in the last ten years are so. See the temperature data for the last 16 years.
But before you start to rejoice over this news, consider this: a warmer planet is entirely beneficial; life flourishes in warmer times. Cold is the scythe of death. This planet is still in the ice age. Presently it is in an interstadial which cannot last and continental ice sheets will return. When this begins, it is the crack of doom.
-Colder winters mean higher fuel bills and more discomfort. Quality of lifestyle diminishes during more severe winters. Older people especially suffer. Winter storms means death for unfortunates who get stranded or who cannot afford fuel.
-Cold brings extinctions, this shown by paleontological studies.
-Cold brings a shorter growing season, less humidity, a shrinkage of arable land world-wide and less food production, and famine. This is of paramount concern for a world whose population will double and redouble this century. A cooling globe threatens world-wide famine with billions of deaths through starvation and lowered resistance to disease.
-A cooling globe means the accumulation of ice in polar regions. Sea level will fall. Ports will be stranded. With no ports, international trade will be ruined. World-wide economic depression more severe than any before will be the result, with economic hardship for the billion, already threatened with starvation. Present beach-front property values will plummet.
-I could go on, but I think you get the picture. So think of your grandchildren and pray for a warmer world.
Cheers.

“The reason shipping companies are spending billions on these new ships is because it is open for much longer and over a much wider region that will allow an easy shipping route. ”
Ah well, it wouldn’t be the first costly mistake.
I approach my warming-related investments with the 100% conviction that IT’s A SCAM from start to finish – and that the investors and governments riding it KNOW it’s a scam, witness GE and the Immelt-Obama connection, and since I decided to do so, I haven’t lost any money with warming related investments.
So thank you very much, I’ll happily provide the steel for the ships these guys have themselves built but I won’t touch a shipping company with a ten foot pole. Most of them will perish.
They already started doing so, remember the publicity stunt of the Beluga?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beluga_Shipping
They’re broke now, they made headlines by running a ship through the North East passage in Summer, accompanied by a Russian ice breaker; German media fell all over themselves pontificating about the significance of this epic voyage (ignoring the fact that for some reason somebody had ports all along the way… )
Remember my words, it’s all a scam and the people partaking it know it. If you invest in it you are a minor player in the scam so you’ll be toast when the big boys call it quits… but maybe you can make a dime from frontrunning… that’s the only dime you can make.

“. . . far too much ad hom . . .

Your comment is a general one not necessarily addressed to the current post. As such, it is a useful comment. No one seems to have addressed it with respect to this post, so I will.
Subtle or not so subtle differences in context need to be recognized. When Person XYZ makes a statement about climate or any other legitimate subject it is not appropriate to attack their personal appearance, the religion they were born into or accept, members of their family, and all such things. When a person makes a public statement that is stupendously silly, seems clueless about the world, lacks understanding regarding irony, lacks a sense of humor, and a sense of good cheer during these seasonal holidays . . . then it is not an ad hominem argument to point out that the person is behaving in one or more of the ways mentioned.
Arguments of the ad hominem kind focus not on the evidence but on the character of the person advancing it, seeking to discredit positions by discrediting those who hold them. Some comments above might fail in this regard. But that’s is not the fault of the post as done by Mr. Watts.

That’s better than I thought, a real side-splitter if you’re not an American taxpayer, now look at this, they found out that it snows on the sea ice. No really.

“Flooded Sea Ice Turns Snow to Ice
Water-logged sea ice is the third phenomenon that may explain why sea ice in the Antarctic is increasing. The process, which scientists call “snow-to-ice conversion,” occurs when the weight of accumulated snow presses down on a slab of sea ice until it’s nearly submerged. When that happens, waves cause ocean water to spill on top of the ice and into the snow, forming a layer that eventually freezes and becomes “snow ice.””

And re the 1.2 bn USD a year in Global warming research funds that NASA devours, here’s the links, just for brevity.

The best part is of course:

“”We’ve made some progress,” said Markus, “but in the next few years, I think we’re going to see much more detailed measurements of the flooding of the snow-ice interface.””

Yay! Soon we’ll know even better what happens when it snows on sea ice! Keynesianism at work! Print, Bernanke, print!

Of course, I clarified that Anthony had initiated a project to make a valuable but nearly unusable gov’t database accessible with an open graphics package, costing about $80K, and that one of Heartland’s backers had anonymously contributed ½, $40K, the rest being raised through WUWT readership, etc. That this was a one-time event, and that not a dime had gone from Heartland to WUWT before or after. I invited him to examine the relationship of RealClimate to its fatcat PR firm owner, Fenton, as a contrast to the out-of-pocket and readership supported WUWT, or any other sceptic site.
The realities of “sceptic funding” seem to be just opaque and incomprehensible to these loons. They project their own situations and motivations — and condemn them!!
The bind moggles.

Regarding the snow-on-ice mechanism, the operative part is that it is snowing more now on both the sea ice and the Antarctic continent than in the recent past. So that mechanism is becoming more important and significant.

Got to this thread late since this morning I had to plow snow for a couple of hours for the Christmas buffet here at our club. Was further detained after filling snow plow with gas(JD 260 diesel of course!). After running ok for 15 minutes it stopped…2 hours later and fuel system drained and refilled in busy parking lot here I am…

From the page:
“The program’s focus is on the use of remote sensing data to study the Earth’s cryosphere.”
Now that’s funny. The NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies does all its temperature measurements with 1,500 earthbound thermometers (that is, after 4500 of them died).

You have seen all the responses so far and I have the feeling that you are disregarding them all as hand waving and bloviating by people who haven’t seen what you have seen – and you have 30 years experience of sailing in the Arctic. Unfortunately, you are making the mistake in thinking that your experience is the ‘normal’ for the Arctic. It isn’t. There is a continual cycle of large melts followed by recoveries. But I do not expect you to believe me after all I am just hand waviing like the rest. So why not read: http://docs.lib.noaa.gov/rescue/mwr/050/mwr-050-11-0589a.pdf ?
This is an archive of reports saved by NOAA. The report you should read starts 2/3rds of the way down the left column. It is a report from a Geology lecturer from the University of Christiana on the great changes his expedition have found in the Arctic in November 1922 Ninety (90) years ago:
“The oceanographic observations have, however, been
even more interesting. Ice conditions were exceptional.
In fact, so little ice has never before been noted. The
expedition all but established a record, sailing as far
north as 8ldeg21min in ice-free water. This is the farthest
north ever reached with modern oceanographic apparatus.

The character of the waters of the great polar basin
has heretofore been practically unknown. Dr. Hoel reports
that he made a section of the Gulf Stream at 81′
north latitude and took soundings to a depth of 3,100
meters. These show the Gulf Stream very warm, and it
could be traced as a surface current till beyond the 81st
parallel. The warmth of the waters makes it probable
that the favorable ice conditions will continue for some time.”

They even quote someone who sounds very much like you only he had more than 54 years experience sailing in the Arctic – and makes almost precisely the same comments as you – except a century earlier…
In connection with Dr. Hoel’s report, it is of interest
to note the unusually warm summer in Arctic Norway
and the observations of Capt. Martin Ingebrigtsen, who
has sailed the eastern Arctic for 54 years past. He says
that he first noted warmer conditions in 1915, that since
that time it has steadily gotten warmer, and that to-day
the Arctic of that region is not recognizable as the same
region of 1865 to 1917.

You make much of the race for oil – this expedition was no different except they were looking for coal. The report says:
Dr. Hoel, who has just returned, reports the location
of hitherto unknown coal deposits on the eastern shores
of Advent Bay-deposits of vast extent and superior
quality. This is regarded as of first importance, as so
far most of the coal mined by the Norwegian companies
on those islands has not been of the best quality.

Plus ca change – the race to reach easy access resources was present even a century ago.
So we have reports from 100 years ago that sound almost precisely the same as your post. Its warmer than ever, there is no ice, there is a search for fossil fuel resources. Indeed, the ocean was completely ice free as far as 81:21N. Yet we know that the ice returned again after that then melted again during the 1940’s then returned again. This is a cycle slightly longer than a man’s lifetime experience. The Vikings sailed to Greenland and created large communities with arable farming for several centuries, and also had communities in North East Canada, It is a natural cycle. Those who have not learned history are unaware that they are watching a repeat. Perhaps you should read some history it can be more reliable than politicians and climate ‘scientists’ as it actually happened.

I am very sure NASA’s cryosphere program will not find out anything that could jeopardize the very successful grant-grabbing enabled by Dr. Hansen, of NASA GISS fame, with his superior temperature extrapolation technique.
Or if they do, they will cover it in caveats as thick as the Antarctic ice shield.
See, that’s how much I trust NASA. You won’t convince me otherwise. Money talks. Same thing happening here in the EU, of course. 200bn of the 2013 EU budget (research and non research combined) are marked as being for “climate-related” activities.
Meaning, up for grabs by the people in the know, never to be seen again.

Thank you for that post. This is the sort of post that should silence the wailing and the hand wringing over melting ice. But the global warmers always ignore this sort of proof.
“Dr. Hoel reports that he made a section of the Gulf Stream at 81′

Here is the reason for the present warmth in the arctic. The global warmers refuse to look past their cherished and oft-refuted AGW theory. SST is due to insolation, not the greenhouse effect. Warmer SST is not due to AGW, and this is incontrovertably so.

Mann may be upset because he was planning on coming out with his own calendar to “communicate better” about climate science. However by the time the Team got done with artistic design, detailed wording, stock selection, several rounds of reviews with 97% of top climate scientists, status meetings in Hawaii, etc., etc., the cost estimates were up over $800K and he was putting together a grant application to cover it.
Thus his comment about where you are getting funding for your effort.

What strikes me about so many of these “the-science-is-settled!” types such as Dr. Mann, who scoff at what they claim is the gross a-scientific background of those who disagree with their diktat about the climate, are really, shockingly, ignorant of so many of the everyday, pedestrian parts of modern technological life which everyman takes for granted and then masters and uses without a second thought, such as the ease and little expense with which we can now draft, create, copy, transfer and distribute a humorous and professional-looking “climate calendar”. Not really. There is only a relatively small clique of AGW promoting scientists. The rest are newspaper reporters, ignorant editorial writers, scientifically illiterate lay persons, self-serving blog promoters, and various other clueless lemmings.
If AGW-alarmist scientists were too numerous, their grant gravy train would have to be shared by too many, and the central clique would have to take a pay cut. They certainly don’t want that.
The OISM Petition proved beyond doubt that the vast majority of professionals in the hard sciences do not buy into the “carbon” scare. Despite numerous attempts, the alarmist crowd has been unable to come anywhere close to the OISM numbers. But not for lack of trying.

Yes, well put Sardondi, I’ve noticed that too. Why is this? Probably because they’re living in a well-funded bubble and really don’t have any intellectual curiousity. Which being up a related point — why do they so readily accuse others of being funded by commercial interests? Most likely because they simply project their own situation and mentality onto others.

Maybe we need to ask just where did Michael Mann get the funds to get a “alarmist” book published? Considering that it was released by Columbia University Press, I’m sure he had help – maybe even using some of his “climate science” grant money to push this out.
You do have to wonder why he couldn’t (or wouldn’t) use Pennsylvania State University’s press (http://www.psupress.org) to put it out. He does work there, doesn’t he?
Never mind – I’ve figured it out: “…Penn State University Press is dedicated to serving the University community, the citizens of Pennsylvania, and scholars worldwide by publishing books and journals of the highest quality…”

Then Mother Nature ships the CO2 back to Oz. If you paid me $90 billion dollars to prove that red hair makes men tall, I could quite easily find and publish tens of thousands of example of tall red-headed men. Clearly proof that red-hair makes men tall. I expect my peers would be more than happy to review and approve my studies in return for me taking the time to review and approve their studies.
No conspiracy is required. Simply money handed out based on a religious belief Al Gore and others have been promoting for 30 years, using science as a tool to promote the belief, and public funds to game the system by rewarding the faithful.
